Lobster Rolls When I moved to Connecticut from Massachusetts seventeen years ago, I fell hard for the most quintessential of summer eats: the lobster roll. I was never a fan of the cold, mayonnaise-drenched version proffered in the shacks of my home state. For me, the Connecticut version is sublime: just sweet meat and melted butter. While it’s a bit of a no-brainer, some are better than others and we ate a slew of them to find the best.

Here’s our list… Fresh Salt at Saybrook Point

Guilford Lobster Pound

On a dreary afternoon, the idea of a lobster roll in a cozy room where the river meets the sound, was just the ticket. At Fresh Salt, you can enjoy your roll outside or in, eliminating the necessity of a sunny day. Here, chunks of tender claw and tail are dipped in butter and overflow a grilled brioche bun. Accompanied by a basket of irresistible house-made, wisp thin potato chips, plus a half lemon dolled up in a net for seedfree squeezing, complete the experience.

The simple deck lined with picnic tables and views of the Sound and Salt Island, would make a perfect setting for a party (and, yes, it's available to rent). Their roll was as classic as they come: a grilled and buttered hot dog roll, stuffed with sweet, juicy meat. It's a happy alternative on a lovely day to lunching on the Guilford Green, as it's just down Whitfield Street. Take a right into the parking lot at The Moorings Restaurant and drive through until you come upon the shack.

505 A Whit eld Street, Guilford guilfordlobsterpound.com

Liv's Lobster Shack The drawback here is the parking lot location, but that's my ONLY beef. Get in line and order up a hot buttered lobster roll, overstuffed with fresh-fromthe-shell chunks, on a buttery, toasted bun. Don't pass up the hand-cut truffle fries. If you must, the Caesar salad is fresh and crisp, but why? Just have the roll. That's why you're here, after all. 26 Bridge Street, Old Saybrook www.livsshack.com

Lobster Landing Many folks around here think that Lobster Landing is the ultimate roll, and I don't disagree. Join the line at the outside grill, and a few minutes later, you'll be munching that perfect roll: a 1/4 pound of warm lobster meat tucked into a barely grilled sub roll ("imported" from Vermont), and drizzled with butter and lemon. That's it. The secret? The roll is sturdy enough, so the thing doesn't get soggy and fall apart before you've had a chance to savor it, and the unadorned lobster, straight from the pot, is the star. BYOB. 152 Commerce Street, Clinton Find Lobster Landing on facebook here.

Westbrook Lobster (in Clinton!) Westbrook Lobster has a varied menu featuring all manner of seafood, but we were here on a mission: the classic lobster roll. They serve it up on the usual toasted bun with hot buttered lobster and ranks up there with the rest of the bunch. I'll always take an onion ring over a french fry, so I loved having the choice. For $1 extra, you can really pig out and have both (moi). With an extensive selection of non-seafood items and a happening bar scene, this is a good choice for families, picky eaters, and cocktail hour, too. 346 E Main Street, Clinton www.westbrooklobster.com 11

Captain Scott's Lobster Dock

Oyster Club

Captain Scott's Lobster Dock is a no-frills eatery serving up lightly buttered chunks of fresh lobster in a classic New England style toasted bun. Wedged between the train tracks and a marina, this popular spot has plenty of parking and picnic tables. Find yourself a stool overlooking the boatyard, or grab a shaded table under the pavilion and order the Classic or Large roll. The sandwich wasn't dripping with butter, clearing the palate for plenty of sweet meat. A full menu of fried shore specialties, too, plus Gifford's ice cream. BYOB.

While it's difficult to improve on a classic CT-style hot lobster roll, it's good to know that a few local chefs are creating elevated versions. Find our favorite at The Oyster Club in Mystic. Here's how they do it: fresh butter is sautéed with onions and coriander. Next, the lobster bodies are simmered in the concoction to create a lobster-infused butter. Classic Martin's potato rolls are brushed with the butter and toasted. A thin smear of apple or peach butter (season dependent) is applied for a touch of sweet with the savory. Local lobster meat from the Stonington docks is poached in the infused butter, placed in the roll, topped with a squeeze of lemon, some crispy fried shallots, and a sprinkle of parsley. A pile of houseseasoned fries is served alongside. THIS is lobster roll perfection.

80 Hamilton Street, New London www.captscotts.com

Lobster At Home I don't cook lobster at home anymore (we call it TMT – too much trouble), but we know that out-oftown guests love a lobster roll, so here's my method. I pick up a pound or two of boiled and justpicked-from-the-shell lobster meat at Atlantic Seafood in Old Saybrook, douse it in melted butter and stuff it in a mini Martin's roll for a super simple summertime snack. (Good idea to call Atlantic Seafood ahead). 1400 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook

13 Water Street Mystic. www.oysterclubct.com

Another entertaining option is even easier. Ring Thimble Island Lobster Bakes, and they'll arrive in the Lobstermobile, ready to serve up lobster rolls or an entire Shore Dinner (steamers, lobsters, chowder, corn, and salad) for as few as eight, or up to 200 guests. 13

Ford’s Lobster

Abbott's

We're smitten with Ford's! Mint green walls hung with black and white photographs of lobstering history, de rigueur lobster pots and paraphernalia, plus tables full of locals chowing down on lobster grilled cheese, fish tacos and lobster bombs (1/2 pound of lobster in a bread bowl!). The scene is straight out of the fifties, but the folks at Ford's are fooling with you. Ford's isn't that old, but lobstering goes WAY Back in the tiny village of Noank. We stuck with the classic lobster roll, served on a golden bun. Grilling it in butter transforms the thing, and it comes stuffed with 1/4 pound of meat wedged inside. On the side? A mountain of crispy, brown fries and absolutely awesome slaw. Plenty of outdoor seating in summer, plus service boat-side when it's really jamming. BYOB.

Abbot's is more of a fast-food experience, though the lobster meat is fresh from the pot. Here it comes Maine style, a cone of meat on a buttered sesame seed bun. You can't get more classic than a bag of Utz chips, and slightly sweet coleslaw served alongside. Outdoor seating on a summer day with a water view is sublime. Pick up a pint of Rhode Island broth-based clam chowder to go. Visit their new digs 3 Water Street, Mystic abbottslobster.com

Pizza Pizza is one of our favorite foods, and lucky for us, we're surrounded by some of the best pies in the country! Here's a rundown of favorites: Old School (classic Neapolitan pie) and New School (modern takes on New Haven pizza).

27

l h c s new Otto

Nanas Bakery The name and humble signage belie the menu that is anything but standard breakfast and lunch fare. Grains are milled in-house, and everything is scratch-made, down to the sausage on the pizza. Like many Nutmeggers, pizza is one of our very favorite foods, and here, you can even have it for breakfast. We rushed down to fill up on carbs, and that we did. Gluttony prevailed as we ordered the clam pie and a classic tomato on the most wonderful chewy sourdough crust. Do NOT miss the hot sourdough donuts. 32 Williams Avenue, Mystic nanasct.com 82 High Street, Westerly nanasri.com oo

28

Preparing a new, seasonal menu every day is a complicated affair. So it comes as no surprise that River Tavern owner Jonathan Rapp offers a simpler concept at his sister restaurant, Otto. But as you can imagine, this ain't no House of Pizza. Chewy, crispy, glorious pies emerge from the 900-degree, wood-fired oven in minutes. The Margherita, oozing with fresh mozzarella, dollops of stracciatella, and strewn with basil leaves, was a slice of pizza heaven, but the more complex pies are beautifully executed, too (from sausage and peppers to shrimp, squid, mint, and garlic). The famous RT Caesar and a gluten-free option are available, too. Beer? Yes. Wine and Avery sodas, too. Seasonal seating under the tent out back. 69 Main Street, Chester ottochester.com

Bufalina One of our favorites on the Shoreline, this tiny spot has been piling the freshest seasonal toppings atop a perfect pie since 2011. I pulled up a bright red stool to the white marble counter and tasted my way through their ever-changing menu. The Margherita here is excellent: a tomato, cheese, and basil pie with the addition of, well, more cheese! Gooey scamorza! The Primavera boasted the fresh tastes of spring: asparagus, pea leaves, and blistered spring onions. Potato, fennel, and sausage hit all the right notes from savory to slightly sweet. Order the Nutella Pie for dessert: thickly spread with the stuff and lightly dusted with powdered sugar. Good to know: Call ahead if you're planning take-out on the weekend. Outdoor seating available. 1070 Boston Post Road, Guilford bufalinact.com

29

Privateers Pizza The Pizzaiolo here has been slinging pizzas since he was a kid (his family owned Red Tomato in Madison), and he certainly knows his stuff. The style is thin crust, slightly charred and chewy, and if you are a fan of a clam pizza (like us), you’ll be glad to know the clams are fresh-shucked. Lots of toppings on the menu, and pies come in small (12″) and large (18″). Slices are available, but be sure and check the schedule before you go. Pizza is served on designated days and hours.

Brickside Pizza Brickside Pizza had us at: “Handcrafted, wood-fired pizza baked well done. Charring is to be expected". The menu offers a handful of unusual toppings, but if they can get a Margherita and the White Clam right, then I'll trust these guys. Freshly shucked clams are tossed atop a thin crust with garlic, olive oil, and Pecorino Romano and cooked to caramelized perfection. The Margherita was a close second. Yummy tomato sauce with a perfect punch of fresh flavor. To-go only. Take your pie to the gazebo or the town green just across the street for an idyllic dinner. 104 Main Street, Ivoryton bricksidepizzact.com 30

55 Main Street, Essex privateerspizza.com

Al Forno This family-friendly trattoria, known for their New Haven-style brick-oven pizza, has raised the bar by offering a sublime pie made in a 250 year old tradition (which requires certification to produce – no joke!) called Pizza Napolitano Vera. The Caputo flour dough rises for two days at room temperature and is topped with housemade, slightly sweet, light tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and ribbons of basil. The crust? A perfect ratio of chewy to char.

La Marea This is one of our go-to's for Italian dining, (the Chicken Milanese is killer), but don't miss the pies here. Wood-fired and a wonderful appetizer to share, or grab a couple to go, featuring a robust sauce and chewy crust. 732 Middlesex Turnpike, Old Saybrook lamareact.com

d sch l Frank Pepe's, established 1925 It's been a long time since I've stood in line for Pepe's. With so much great pizza available, it hardly seems worth it. And I was so ready to dismiss this venerable pie. After all, with seven locations in Connecticut, they're not exactly a mom-and-pop shop anymore. Was the quality still up to snuff? A hearty YES! If you're a pizza purist like me, the tomato and mooozz (yep, that's how they say it!) pie has a nicely salted, skinny crust with just a bit of char. No insipid sauce here; it's bursting with tomatoey flavor. 157 Wooster Street, New Haven order.pepespizzeria.com

Sally's Apizza, established 1938 Lots of folks call Sally's their favorite, and if we were anywhere but New Haven, we might too. This oldschool, no-frills joint offers up a classic New Haven skinny crust pie on an oblong metal platter that clearly has legions of fans (John F. Kennedy and Frank Sinatra among them). When you can't brave the lines for other New Haven joints, head here for a veggie pie (hot peppers lend a welcome spicy bite), or salty anchovy, which make up for the rather plain tomato and mootz. Good to know: cash only. 237 Wooster Street, New Haven sallysapizza.com oo

32

Zuppardi's Apizza, established 1934 Because pizza is our favorite food, we thought it crucial to add Zuppardi's ballyhooed clam pie to our repertoire. Our server also recommended the sausage, so we ordered that, too. The sausage is fantastic (chunks of it, freshly housemade and cooked directly on the pie, makes all the difference), but oh, the clam! Redolent of garlic, with plump, juicy bivalves studding a thin, slightly charred crust, this is one remarkable pie. A bit of clam broth and olive oil soaks into the crust, adding even more clam flavor. Just a squeeze of lemon completes this memorable feast. Call ahead to make sure the clam pie is available. 179 Union Avenue, West Haven zuppardisapizza.com

Modern Apizza, established 1934 Modern was our first foray into New Haven pizza when we moved here, and I thought I found the runner-up to Totonno's in Coney Island. I still think Modern is the king of crust: charred, never burnt, irregularly shaped, and flavorful. The place is not far off the beaten path of Worcester Street but still boasts a line most days. It's straight-up tomato and mooz for me, but regulars devour the Italian Bomb (Sausage, Bacon, Pepperoni, Mushroom, Onion, Pepper & Garlic). Good to know: small parking lot next door. 874 State Street, New Haven modernapizza.com

Farm Stands Before there were Farmers’ Markets in every town on the Shoreline, we shopped the farm stands for our produce and pies. Despite the availability of farm-fresh food everywhere, we have some favorite farm stands that we scurry to for specific goodies:

40

White Gate Farm

Scott’s Yankee Farmer

This is the stand for the aesthete. This famous organic farm features meticulously displayed fresh veggies and a variety of delicacies made in the Farm Kitchen. I never leave without a bag or two of gluten-free breakfast cookies (stash them in the freezer, they keep well and don’t need defrosting), some beet hummus, and perhaps the daily soup: this week’s version was a dairy-free cashew pistou. Read about White Gate’s Farm Fest Saturdays here.

We head here for the best hot apple cider donuts on weekends, but that’s definitely not all…their own hot house tomatoes start early, and you’ll find tons of freshly picked berries and veggies. Check the blackboard for pick your own dates.

83 Upper Pattagansett Road, East Lyme whitegatefarm.net

Scott’s Farm Store We head here for tomatoes and corn virtually every week (and a fat chunk of cheddar cheese and some Liuzzi’s burrata), but it’s also a great stop for gardeners. Open everyday. Find Scott’s on facebook: Open everyday. 356 Middlesex Turnpike, Old Saybrook Find Scott’s on facebook: www.facebook.com/ ScottsFarmStoreLlc/

436 Boston Post Road, East Lyme scottsyankeefarmer.net

Sankow’s Beaver Brook Head a mile up Beaver Brook Road in Lyme and you’ll happen upon an old farmhouse with a faded sign out front. Head out back to the farm store to find refrigerated and freezer cases full of Sankow’s award-winning cow and goat cheeses, frozen goodies like lamb and bean chili, bolognese sauce, and stacks of Shepherd’s Pie. Don’t leave without a container or two of their pesto. It’s the BEST. Next door is a shop full of wool products, sweaters and the cutest socks. 139 Beaver Brook Road, Lyme Find Sankow’s on facebook here.

Stone Acres Farm

Staehly’s

This historic 63-acre working farm celebrates natural farming, sustainable food, culinary education, and the preservation of open space. They also supply the famed Oyster Club and Engine Room in Mystic. Check the website for farm dinners, educational programs, and other events: Hours: 9am – 6pm daily.

Folks head here for hanging baskets, veggies, Grannie’s pies and fruit wines, but we like the rows of mason jars filled with all manner of tempting treats. The spiced peaches make a handy dessert, just pile a few over a bowl of vanilla ice cream. Bread and butter pickles are a staple in our house, and who could resist a jar of old fashioned pickled beet balls? A stash of these in your pantry make fantastic hostess gifts.

Bishop’s Orchards

Four Mile River Farm

For many of us, Bishop’s is where we go, not only for a stellar selection of produce, but for everyday groceries. I always pick up a few jars of their unsweetened applesauce (just like homemade), and some turkey pot pies for the freezer. But this time of year is a don’t miss for fruit pie. And what we love about Bishop’s is you can buy a half. I’m a huge fan of the Fruit of the Farm with NO added sugar. It’s summer pie perfection, stuffed with apples, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, it’s not too sweet with a lovely crumbly crust. And if you’ve only bought a half, that’s all you’ll eat.

Four Mile is famous for its burgers that turn up on many fine restaurant menus But there’s lots more than burgers at the farmstand. You’ll find every cut of beef imaginable from sirloin strips to steak tips, plus nitrate free hot dogs and kielbasa. Get your entire dinner here: a refrigerated case is stocked with Four Root Farm’s salad mix, arugula and herbs, and grab some chèvre from Sweet Pea Farm (try the orange cranberry). Paleo peeps can stock up on bone broth, too.

1355 Boston Post Road, Guilford bishopsorchards.com

124 Four Mile River Road, Old Lyme fourmileriverfarm.com

Lakeside Feed You might come here as much for an ice cream cone as for a rack of ribs or a carton of fava beans, but this is a fun place to hit for the whole family. From the llamas out front to the baby chicks in the feed store, the tots will love a trip here. Once you get past the tubs of ice cream, you’ll find a freezer case full of farm meats, from hot and sweet Italian sausage to bacon, burgers, stew meat and steaks. 31 Lake Drive, Guilford Find Lakeside Feed on Facebook here.

Pan li’s If you’re in the market for a lifesized buddha or giraffe, this is the place. All the statuary out front may be confusing, but inside this is a normal farmstand with some basic groceries available, too. We snagged fresh cut flowers in mason jars for $6.50 a bunch and an absolutely perfect cherry pie. 42 Norwich Road, Salem

Deep Hollow Farm This organic, no-till farm is churning out perfectly lined rows of beets, kale and heirloom tomatoes and everything in between. You’ll find all of their own produce offerings plus eggs from 1738 Farm, maple syrup and elderberry juice from Fat Stone Farm, plus bread, pasta, and THE best kale pesto from 8 Mile Meadow. The farmhouse store is tucked away near the end of Deep Hollow Road and open Saturday mornings from 9-12.

Barberry Hill Farm

Cold Spring Farm

Barberry is a regular stop on our jaunts up and down the Shoreline for a bunch of fresh flowers and a bag of lumpy heirloom tomatoes. This 100 year old family farm practices sustainable farming methods and grows their crops without the use of pesticides and fungicides. The roadside stand, on the Post Road between Madison and Guilford, is always a feast for the eyes (and instagram worthy!).

It’s worth a drive from wherever you are to visit this sprawling farm on the edge of Lake Hayward in Colchester. The farmstand is easy to spot and open daily from dawn til dusk. Fill up on freshly harvested produce and locally made baked goods. The fridges and freezers are stocked with organic, grass-fed meats from the farm, plus local cheese and milk.

Donuts

Deviant Donuts

Flanders Donut & Bake Shop

Brioche, cake, gluten-sensitive, and vegan donuts are pumped out each week in a different theme keeping curious newbies and devotees lining up on the porch (and down the sidewalk). On our third attempt at snagging donuts (sold out, the line was too long), we were sure to be first in line at 7 a.m. on a Sunday for the BEST OF collection. We opted for Oreo, French Toast (with strawberries), Cup of Dirt (gummy worms), and our favorite, Nutella-filled. Order ahead and pick up at the window.

This classic shop, dating back to 1972, is a standout. Dozens of confections line the shelves for a revolving door of die-hards shuffling in for boxes of fresh yeast-raised and old-fashioned cake donuts. We left with a half dozen, including coconut, traditional, and strawberry-glazed, plus the indulgent Maple Bacon and a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup (filled with peanut butter). Get here early on weekends as they do sell out.

A Classic Cruller at Beach Donuts

Blazing Fresh Donuts

Scratch-baked Beach Donuts (now in Clinton) has expanded its offerings over the years to include trendy toppings like Fruity Pebbles and Maple Bacon, but the classic plain cruller (or cinnamon sugar) is the draw for me. Crispy on the outside, with a caky crumb that’s not too sweet, this simple stick may just be my favorite.

Design your own donut at Blazing Fresh! Each donut is made to order on the spot and flash-fried. Choose a homemade frosting and a topping ranging from sweet to salty, and finish it off with a drizzle. The tasty treat is served warm and melts in your mouth!

Nana’s Pizza & Bakery

Young Buns Doughnuts

We come for the outstanding pizza, yet we just can’t resist Nana’s sourdough donuts. Order an Umami, served hot and draped in caramel, and pair it with the Oaxacan coffee, a blend of espresso, milk, dark chocolate, and Chili De Arbol. We sampled the delightfully crunchy chocolate donut, and next time we’re having Cacio E Pepe or Cardamom Espresso.

It comes as no surprise that these hand-cut, yeast-leavened brioche doughnuts by the award-winning dream team behind Sift Bakery are layered in flavor and texture. Our top pick here was the Young Bun, vanilla cake covered with a sweet and salty crunch. Don’t miss the heart-shaped Lemon Bergamot, and we couldn’t leave without rainbow sprinkles.

Locals We Love: There are oodles of talented makers, artists, and crafters on the Shoreline. We're giving a shoutout to a few favorites:

Catherine Christiano When we were first married, we saved our pennies and rented a beach cottage on Plum Island in Newburyport, MA, for a week every summer. The little enclave is frozen in time, packed with tiny houses dating to the turn of the century. I’d spend my days biking around the island, snapping pix of my favorite cottages. I’ve long been besotted with the vernacular, and that’s why Catherine Christiano’s paintings of the cottages of Old Lyme resonate so strongly with me. Her play of light, color, and shadow brings me right back to those barefoot days, freshly married, with our entire life ahead of us. You can purchase an original, but if you’re on the hunt for a summery update, you can buy limited edition archival prints for $125. Check them out here: catherinechristiano.com

Ann Lightfoot Jewelry We’ve been fans of Ann Lightfoot Jewelry since she started braiding her signature flower necklaces in 2003. These days, her collection is a statementmaking go-to for women on the Shoreline and well beyond, each elegant piece hand-crafted of moonstone, hematite, pyrite, mother of pearl (and so many more gems) in her studio in Lyme. Available at Lulu’s in Guilford, Lori Warner in Chester and online: annlightfoot.com 51

BlackKat Leather

City Bench After just a few minutes talking to Ted Esselstyn about wood, his enthusiasm had worn off on me. I found myself petting the smooth boards of Tulip, Sugar Maple, and Beech in the workshop of City Bench, the furniture company that Ted owns with his brother, Zeb. Their concept, to create useful and beautiful objects from trees destined for the landfill, is a lesson in sustainability. Through relationships with the cities of New Haven, Hartford, Bridgeport, and local institutions, they salvage downed, damaged, or diseased trees, kiln-dry them, and fill their Higganum showroom with handcrafted dining and coffee tables, benches and stools, headboards and bookshelves. Call for an appointment (860.716.8111) and then head to Higganum to see these sustainable artworks for yourself. Find out more: city-bench.com. Custom work available, too. 52

BlackKat Leather, whose owners, Drew Archer and Cassandra Amu, craft meticulous hand-stitched bags to last a lifetime. Working in sturdy natural skins, you’ll find everything from wallets to crossbodies and satchels here. The couple’s sensibility is spare and chic, with simple toggle closures and minimal hardware. Here and there, they go a little crazy with color! Their shop/atelier is a happy addition to the artisanal lineup in Chester. Custom orders available. 36 Main Street, Chester blackkatleather.com

Windsors and Woodwork I love that Annie Carl uses the word generational to describe the furniture her dad, Joe Carl, makes. What started as a hobby has turned into a substantial side hustle, crafting authentic Windsor chairs by hand that will last for a lifetime (or several). Another hand-hewn heirloom Joe produces are beautiful wooden pie boxes, inspired by his second passion, making pie (!) and delivering them to friends and family. The dovetailed boxes come in several sizes and wood options, or you can order a custom size. They work equally well for toting a charcuterie or cheese board to summer gatherings. windsorsandwoodwork.com

Mar Floral Marlee has become synonymous with florals on the Shoreline, and I order on the regular for everyday bouquets, holiday arrangements, and host/ess gifts. Create your color story or let her go crazy (I’m a green and white gal myself), and we promise you’ll love the artistry she brings to her craft. Subscriptions and delivery available, too. mar oral.com fl

Green Grape Letterpress at Weekend Kitchen

From the classic sailor bracelet to doormats, doorstops, coasters, and even wedding boutonnieres, their handmade items lend a jaunty, coastal spirit to your home, wedding, or (obviously) great for gifting. Shop online or visit the store at 2 Holmes Street in Mystic. mysticknotwork.com

I can’t resist a dip into Weekend Kitchen for inspiration, and I never come away empty-handed. Owner Nancy Kirkiles stocks EVERYTHING cooking, plus an assortment of small vintage finds (ironstone gravy boats, sterling salt spoons), scented soaps, and environmentally sound cleaning supplies. Nancy is also an expert at letterpress. Her collection of cards, stationery, invitations, gift tags, and ephemera is hand-printed on an 1880’s tabletop press of 100% cotton fibers. Personalization and custom orders welcome. 16 Main Street, Essex Weekend-kitchen.com

Edd’s Place

Chris’ Dog House

New owners have updated the breakfast and lunch fixings at Edd’s Place, tucked into Westbrook’s marine district, with a water view. Edd’s is still the same relaxed nostalgic-style dining experience we’ve known over the years with fresh, exciting energy and new talent breathed into it. The menu is chock full of elevated breakfast and lunchtime classics, plus fresh-baked muffins, biscuits and cookies!

I'm the girl at the barbecue, happily downing a hot dog while the rest are eating steak. It's my summer go-to and I can't pass by Chris's stand in Deep River without a full stop. She's moved down the road to bigger digs with picnic tables out front, but it's still a friendly snack shack. Besides the classic Hummel on a right-size and tasty bun (proportion is key here), there's plenty more to order, like burgers, steak and cheese, kielbasa and red hots, but I can't comment as I'll always have that perfect summer dog. Main Street, Deep River (next to SOMA)

478 Boston Post Road, Westbrook eddsplacect.com

Flanders Crescent Beach Stand Offering classic breakfasts, Ashlawn Farm Coffee and “New Wave Old School” selections (yes, avocado toast!), this is a serene and sweet spot for the first meal of the day. This option for breakfast, sans crowds, complete with a calming sea view was an idyllic start to the day. 37 Bayview Avenue, Niantic flandersfish.com/the-stand

Simon’s Marketplace at Ballek’s Simon’s Marketplace from Chester shares their baked goods, sandwiches, soups and coffee from a shipping container each summer! Visit from Fridays - Sundays, weather permitting. Check Simon’s FB page for updates. 90 Maple Avenue, East Haddam 59

Johnny Ad’s This roadside stand on Route 1 in Old Saybrook has been frying clams and the like since 1957. You’ll need to get in line most hours of the day and you can get ice cream here too while you’re at it. We go for the Fried Oyster Roll and fries. 910 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook johnnyads.com

The Anchor at Hays Haven There’s a little treasure of a shack serving handcut fries and scrumptious steamed cheeseburgers at Hays Haven Marina in Chester. Opens at 6:30am Thursday-Monday, so great for egg Sammies, too. 59 Railroad Avenue, Chester Check FB for menus and hours. 60

Don’t Miss Honeycone Craft Ice Cream There's lots of great ice cream on the Shoreline, but nothing like Honeycone! A local mother/daughter team realized their dream with the opening of this sweet spot in Chester. Everything from ice cream and sprinkles to butterscotch, marshmallows, and cones are carefully crafted in-house. Flavors are ever-changing and seasonal, like Honey Lavender, Blueberry Lemon Curd, and Italian Rainbow Cookie. There's always a dairy-free option or two. Need something super special for a celebration? Order an ice-cream cake like no other here. 29 Main Street, Chester honeyconecreamco.com

Cocotte This charming spot is helmed by Jeffrey De Francesco, a graduate of the French Culinary Institute (who has worked with the likes of Jean-Georges and Tom Colicchio) and his Parisian wife, Isabelle, the inspiration for Cocotte and firmly in charge of the front of the house. During the week, you can stop by to pick up giant rustic Pugliese loaves, sourdough boules, baguettes, and pumpernickel. Meticulous cakes, tarts, and patisserie line the cases. While you can nibble on croissants and brioche Wednesday through Sunday, head here for brunch Thursday through Sunday. We grabbed a seat at a marble-topped table in the cozy cafe and feasted on perfectly rare slices of tuna atop a Salade Nicoise, and a delicately dressed Salade au Chèvre Chaud studded with warm goat cheese toasts. Find a full menu of tartines, omelettes and of course Oeufs Cocotte. 323 Main Street, Old Saybrook cocottect.com 63

3 Girls Vegan Soft Serve This is a summer staple for us: A tasty, vanilla/chocolate swirl, oat milk, softserve ice cream cone (with or without a cherry-dipped top!) from 3 Girls Vegan. Head to their downtown Guilford bakery for these sweet summery treats (plus ice cream sandwiches, shakes, cakes & more). Next time: a blood orange ice cream float! Bakery: 23 Water Street, Guilford. Main shop full of vegan cuisine: 645 Boston Post Road, Guilford threegirlsvegandowntown.com 64

Ashlawn Farm Sausage & Egg Biscuit I head to Ashlawn Farm Coffee for my usual yogurt/granola parfait and cappuccino, but all too often find myself seduced by this delectable treat. A flaky-yummy-just baked cheddar chive biscuit, with a slab of Walt's maple sausage, melted Mystic Cheese Company cheddar, and a Farmer's Cow egg. Then I cut the thing in two and try to eat only half. You know how that scenario goes. By the time my cappuccino is gone, so is the sandwich. Breakfast perfection (or lunch if Ashlawn hasn't sold out). 455 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook farmcoffee.com

Tru e Shots/Chocolate Geeks/ Warm Chocolate Chip Cookie Chocolate addicts: If you've never had a Truffle Shot, you are sorely missing out! We've written numerous times about these decadent shot glasses filled with various flavors of ganache. New here is their stock of curated and excellent chocolate bars and cooking cocoas. If you're feeling peckish while you're there, enjoy simply the best warm chocolate chip cookie on the planet. Made fresh all day long. A treat! 49 Main Street, Essex truf eshots.com

Life Bowls On the hunt for healthy? Head straight to Life Bowls in Madison, and my favorite: the Playa Pitaya, a nutritious combo of hot pink pitaya (dragonfruit), mango, pineapple, and bananas, topped with coconut, kiwi, and granola. Not only is it quite like having an ice cream sundae for lunch, but the thing is also full of antioxidants, essential nutrients, fiber AND low in calories. Besides acai bowls and smoothies, you’ll find a variety of toasts (yes, avocado), hot oat bowls with yummy toppings, and a Buddha Bowl brimming with quinoa, chickpeas, kale, and avocado. You'll find gluten-free and dairy-free options, plus absolutely everything is healthy, delish and insta-worthy, too. 757 Boston Post Road, Madison

Mindy K.’s Summer Rolls We prefer the shrimp or veggie, but chicken is available, too. You can order a large platter with peanut dipping sauce for a party. Call ahead and cash only. 1610 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook mindyks.com 66

Tomato Pie at Oyster River Market We can’t envision a summer without this Tomato Pie. What’s better than a perfectly baked, flaky crust filled with egg, cheese, corn and tomatoes? These cheesy pies are happening in this sweet farm market, along with a bevy of sweet ones, including apple, key lime, and berry. 1057 Boston Post Rd, Old Saybrook oysterrivermarket.com

Empanadas at Olive Oyl's The empanada craze you see all over Brooklyn hasn't yet blown up on the Shoreline, but if you need a fast fix, Olive Oyl's in Essex usually has a platter full of either lightly spiced chicken or beef. Perfectly fried and oh-so-tasty, it makes for a perfect lunch or snack. 6 Main Street, Essex oliveoylscarryout.com
