Dr.Simscompletedabachelor'sinconstruction managementfromPurdueUniversityandmovedaroundthe U.S.buildingindustrialfacilities.Atthatpoint,henever thoughthewouldgoforanadvanceddegreeorworkin highereducation.Afterseveralyearsintheindustry,he constructionmanagementattheUniversityofFlorida.
Whilethere,Purdueaskedhimtoreturnasagraduate instructorwhileprovidingapaiddoctorate.After completingthedoctorate,severaluniversitiesinvitedDr SimstointerviewforAssistantProfessorPositions,sohe changedhisfocustohighereducation.Heworkedatseveral universitiesbuildingprogramsandadvancinghis administrativecareerpath,leadinghimtobecomethe PresidentofCapitolTechnologyUniversity(CapitolTech).

TheHistoryofCapitolTech
CapitolTechnologyUniversitywasfoundedin WashingtonD.C.astheCapitolRadioEngineering Institute(CREI)in1927byEugeneH.Rietzke,aNavy veteranandradiooperatorwhosawtheneedforan advancedschoolforradioandelectronicstechnicians. CREIbeganasacorrespondenceschool,however,its popularityledtoa1932openingofaresidencedivision, allowingstudentstoworkhands-oninlaboratories. PromotingandCelebratingDiversity
“Ourinstitutionpridesitselfonpromoting andcelebratingdiversityinour community,”saysDr.Sims.InFall2020, thecampus'totalethnicandracialminority populationwas48%,and56.8%when includingfemalesinSTEMasan underservedpopulation.CapitolTech's undergraduatepopulationconsistedof nearly50%minoritystudents;wasover awerePellGranteligiblewithtwo-thirds receivingsomekindoffederalaid.On average,Master'sstudentswere33years old,50%minority,and29%female,and doctoralstudentswere46yearsold,46% minority,and29%femalein2019.

Tosupportitsdiversepopulationintheiracademicand extracurricularinterests,theuniversityestablished studentgroupsfocusedonspecitheNationalSocietyof BlackEngineers(NSBE),SocietyofWomanEngineers (CWE),andWomeninCybersecurity(WiCys).The universityactivelyrecruitsfromspaceswithadiverse populationsuchastheGraceHopperCelebrationof WomeninComputingconference.

Duringthe1990s,USuniversitiesbegantoprioritize researchtakingfocusfromappliedtechnicalprograms.
