Kemach JCB’s customer-centricity is ‘a step above the rest’ “Today most machinery available on the market is good but what differentiates a brand is the company itself and the level of service it delivers. he Natie and Marius have been dealing with leading compact earthmoving equipment specialist, Kemach JCB, since 2016, when they stumbled upon a good deal on two new JCB 3CX TLBs.With the assistance of Kemach JCB they acquired both machines which lead to the formation of BF Digger Hire (the company taking its name from the co-founders’ surnames).What was initially a side line business grew so rapidly that it was impossible to manage everything after hours.

Within twelve months Natie decided to dedicate his full time to the company.

In 2018, Natie and Marius made a business decision to establish a new company, BF Hire (Pty) Ltd., together with a strategic business partner, Boland Grondwerke, with whom they have been working for over a year.“Forming one company was simply a natural progression,”

affirms Natie.“BF Hire’s biggest asset is the people that work for us,” state Natie and Marius.

“Not our machinery, not money in the bank, not a good cash-flow, it is all about our people.

Without them we wouldn’t have been able to build this business.They are our best marketing tool through good and fast work.They are the guys responsible for customers always coming back to us. If they didn’t commit to the business in the same way we did, all would be lost.We try to support and help them in difficult times and circumstances and that gets repaid in full through their quality of work. Once any owner of a company starts realising that workers are the biggest and best asset, worker attitudes towards the business and customers will change completely.We as owners cannot operate 15 machines ourselves, we need our people to help take the company forward.”

BF Hire currently caters primarily to the agriculture and construction industries in the Western Cape region. Natie adds that in comparison to other brands that he has cross-hired in the past, his JCB machines trump them all in the fuel-consumption department.“Our JCB 86C midi-excavator astonishes us with the fuel consumption we get from its Kohler engine.This little machine averages around 4.2 l/h.”

Operator comfort and safety are amongst the first factors Natie and Marius take into account before buying a new machine and they rate Kemach JCB machinery to be better than

Lack of road maintenance in SA will cost SA billions of Rands

Roads that are not properly and timeously maintained are costing South Africa millions of Rands and negatively affecting our economy and society.This is according to Saied Solomons, President of the South African Road Federation (SARF) and CEO of the Southern African Bitumen Association (SABITA).

ecently it was International Road Maintenance Day with countries internationally focusing on road maintenance as a fundamental action to protect the environment while contributing to socio-economic development.“Our focus is geared towards the economic and social imperatives of proper road maintenance, of which the environment is an important part,” says Solomons.

“Roads are a vital public asset and can deliver a higher economic return on investment than any other single type of infrastructure. But SA’s physical road network is likely to require billions of Rands to restore if maintenance is not taken seriously,” he says.

“The real cost of not maintaining roads is difficult to quantify because poor roads are dangerous and affect road safety, they lead to higher transportation costs and bottlenecks on busy routes, they prevent people from accessing goods and essential services, they increase vehicle operating costs due to frequent repairs and require more fuel use, and they increase CO2 emissions,” he says.

“Maintenance extends the structural life of a road but when this does not take place on time, the road deteriorates rapidly and instead of road maintenance, road rehabilitation is required and the costs soar.”

Solomons urges all South African road authorities to prioritise road maintenance.“A proper Pavement Management System should be used to identify areas where maintenance is required, in order to prioritise and action projects.This will preserve the road network and extend the life of a road.”

Solomons explains that road deterioration happens in stages.“It is caused by ultra violet light from the sun, storm and rain water and traffic.

These stages start with ageing of the bitumen which causes the surfacing to crack and this is when road maintenance must come in. But if it doesn’t, water seeps into the underlying layers causing them to weaken. If the cracks are not sealed, potholes form which trigger further rapid deterioration of the road.This is all compounded by overloaded trucks – one overloaded truck can carry the same weight as about 20,000 cars.

“The design life of a road is anything from 15 to 20 years and besides resurfacing, road maintenance is unlikely to be necessary before 15 or 20 years. However, roads must be consistently monitored so that issues are picked up and appropriate maintenance quickly initiated.

“While some of our road authorities may have a challenge of competency and skills, upskilling and training can far more easily be dealt with than declining roads.We have a rich pool of experienced road and transport experts in South Africa that are supporting the transport sector.

Recently, SARF conducted a training programme for the Department of Public Works in the North West province ahead of a major gravel roads maintenance and construction programme.”

South Africa boasts the world’s 10th longest road network and 18th longest paved road network.The country has an estimated road network length of 750 000 kilometres (2015), which consists of 158 124 kilometres of paved roads and 591 876 kilometres of gravel roads (National Department of Transport, 2016). In 2014, the value of SA’s road network was estimated at around R2 trillion.

“Dealing with road maintenance across our 750 000-kilometre network will help avoid a debt burden on future generations,” adds Solomons.

Crane & Hoist Equipment SA was formed in 2017 by a management team that together have amassed over 40 years in the tower crane sector.

This team includes sales director Louw Smit and operations director Danie Roos.The experienced staff includes two Potain-certified master technicians, accredited lifting machine inspectors (LMIs), and qualified riggers and electricians.

“We even have in-house training capacity which is certified by Potain, so we are able to train our own staff and customers’ staff,” says Crous.

Strong relationships with key customers in the local market has meant that Crane & Hoist Equipment SA has been busy since day one, mainly in rentals, servicing, anchoring and jacking but also in crane sales.The company already boasts its own fleet of seven tower cranes suitable for mediumsized and small projects, where 5 to 8 tonne lifting capacity is required with 50-60 metre jib lengths.

Beyond its Gauteng base, is has also recently been active in several KwaZulu-Natal residential developments and significantly its experts have been called on from as far afield as Ghana, Sudan and Burkina Faso. Kubota excavators make the difference for GDM Plumping & Projects Having purchased a 3-t Kubota U30 compact excavator in 2016, which has since performed beyond expectations, GDM Plumping & Projects went on to become the first company in South Africa to take delivery of the smaller Kubota U15-3 when Smith Power introduced it in 2018.To date, the two machines are at the centre of the company’s accelerated growth.

DM – which operates in the greater Gauteng area – specialises in plumping, including water, sewer and stormwater lines, with a special focus on trench excavations.To ensure optimum service delivery to its clients, the company, run by three Buirski brothers – David, Gareth and Matt – decided to invest in a trusted compact excavator back in 2016 and after a thorough investigation of the market, they went on to purchase a Kubota U30 mini-excavator from local distributor, Smith Power Equipment.

Accelerating business growth at the time had seen the company taking a mechanisation approach to its plumping business to ensure quick execution of projects.At the time, the business had grown from two employees and one vehicle in 2012 to a workforce of 16 and three vehicles by 2015.To date the company has over 100 people in its employ and runs a fleet of 15 vehicles.

The purchase of the Kubota U30 in 2016 ushered a new era and offered the company new capabilities in going about its plumping business.

“We have never looked back,” says Matt, who joined the two brothers in the business in 2015.“In a few years, the internal landscape of the business has changed in that the ratio of skilled people to unskilled has been reduced drastically – and this is owning to our decision to purchase the Kubota excavators.”

In 2018, GDM purchased the first U15-3 unit in South Africa. Due to its compact size, the 1,5-t is largely deployed in residential projects, while the larger U30 is used to execute larger commercial projects.“Our productivity has improved tremendously. For example, typical turnaround time for a house drain using labour would be eight to 10 days, compared with the three to four days with an excavator.This translates to half the time, obviously with reduced number of people,” explains Matt.

Why Kubota excavators?

A major factor in the buying decision was the compact nature of the Kubota excavators.“We generally work in confined spaces with limited

room to manoeuvre, so compact equipment is key for the type of projects we usually undertake,” explains Matt.

Because the company operates at sites where space is at premium most of the time,Tom Bloom, GM for Construction at Smith Power, explains that GDM was the first to take delivery of the ultra-compact U15-3 when it arrived in South Africa last year.“For a plumping company, machine size is critically important. Given the nature of their space-constrained applications, GDM were aware of their worksite limitations, often having to contend with restricted working width.With an operating weight of 1,5tonne, the U15-3 provides enough power to tackle some of the toughest jobs in space-constrained environments,” says Bloom.

A key feature that speaks directly to the common problem of width restrictions on plumping sites is the U15-3’s hydraulic track that can adjust the track width from 1 240 to 990 mm.At the touch of a lever, operators can reduce the width to allow for navigation through narrow spaces, or increase the width, for better stability.

“The adjustable track width function allows the operator to retract the undercarriage, pass through single opening doors or gates, and then expand the undercarriage when working, for better machine stability,” explains Charl Kemp,Area Manager for Kubota Construction, adding that the machine’s size also makes it very easy to transport between sites, given the nomadic nature of GDM’s business.

Matt agrees, saying ease of transportation and mobility was a key consideration for GDM.“The U15 can be transported on a trailer towed by a bakkie.The excavator’s mobility was a key selling point for us. Often a site has limited or tight spaces, so both the size and the mobility of the excavators were very important in our purchasing decision,” says Matt.

Another reason in choosing the Kubota excavator was the need to significantly up productivity, while reducing casual labour costs in the process.“We found that sourcing and utilising causal labour was becoming a costly exercise. Manual labour is time-consuming, and often, unreliable. In terms of feasibility, it made more sense to invest in Kubota excavators,” says Matt.

A piece of equipment is as good as its aftersales service. Smith Power’s service capabilities were on show from the start.“Among the factors we decided to purchase was the first impression created by the Smith Power team, who provided us with very good service on initial enquiry.The aftersales service has been great. Downtime is minimal to non-existent and we have never had any incidents,” says Matt.

Looking to the future, Matt says GDM has been fortunate enough in the plumping industry with a steady flow of work.“Our vision for the company is to further grow in the industry and build up a reliable fleet of plant – especially mini-excavators. Our excavators have made the difference for us, especially as far as project turnaround times are concerned.This has been a good reflection on our business, which is testimony to our professionalism and goes a long way in accelerating our growth,” concludes Matt.

A

ccording to Servaas Le Roux, product manager concrete admixtures, the company’s new Dynamon MS 100 product is an acrylic-based admixture for concrete where the variations in aggregates won’t affect the concrete characteristics severely.

“This technically advanced product is formulated to deal with aggregates in readymix and precast concrete containing high amounts of fine parts such as clay and mica which use more water than necessary. It lowers the water demand of such aggregates, allowing manufacturers stable manufacturing conditions even though the raw materials are not that stable. It is mainly used by concrete manufacturers to produce fluid concrete.”

SUPER PLASTICISING A further advantage of using Dynamon with less than the best materials is it counteracts minerals that might make super plasticizing the admixture less efficient. It means a lower dosage of super plasticizers is needed but at the same time allows longer workability retention of the mix.Although it is suitable for concrete production of any type, it is particularly well suited to produce high consistency concrete, self-consolidating concrete, pumped concrete and fair face concrete.

Mapei has a range of products complementing the Dynamon MS 100 including super plasticizers in the same Dynamon range, viscosity-modifying, fume-based powdered and retarding admixtures.

The company also recommends additional products to improve specialized concrete production such as Expancrete, which is an expanding agent used in the production of shrinkage-compensated concrete.

Then there are form-release compounds from the Mapeform Eco range and DMA used to strip formwork from concrete. Contractors would also find the curing agents from the Mapecure range useful to protect concrete from rapid water evaporation.

Completing the range are fly-ash, lime-based fillers, blast furnace slag and pozzolan.

APPLICATION Dynamon MS 100 is supplied in a readyto-use liquid form and can be added either to the mixing water or right after all the other components such as cement, aggregates and mineral additives have been added.After adding, Mapei SA recommends extended mixing time to ensure an even distribution of it in the mix. It is most effective if applied in fluid concrete with a super plasticizer.

When Clive Wicks suggested that we announce my retirement in the CPHA magazine I must say that I was somewhat skeptical. I am now glad that I agreed and made the effort and hope that my exploits will encourage others particularly our younger members to participate and meaningfully support the CPHA to better serve the industry.

T

he long walk down memory lane has caused me to reflect on bygone days that are reminiscent and full of fond memories.

I hope this walk down memory lane with me will bring back memories of mutual acquaintances and contract sites of some of the great feats achieved by our clients, the construction companies that helped put one of the best infrastructures in the world in place. Remember!

We are great in membership numbers but we are greater in supporting and participating member numbers.

My 48 years of serving the construction and mining industry has been a roller coaster journey with many ups and downs but more ups than downs.

When I joined Ingersoll-Rand in December of 1969 the probationary period was six months no matter what your degree or qualification. Our late chairman, managing director at the time, Bartus van Til was an absolute stickler when it came to employment of staff.As a rookie salesman I was given the West Rand which was considered the worst area until the development of Chamdor Industrial Site.

New industries and companies sprang up like mushrooms in the rainy season and the sale of pneumatic tools, large reciprocating compressors and particularly Type 30 small reciprocating compressors rocketed. It was the longest six months of my life and on 1st June 1970, the year the CPHA was founded, I was officially appointed to the staff of Ingersoll-Rand South Africa and assigned to the Construction & Mining division.

The seventies were exciting times for someone like me with a new industry to serve and the development of new products like Centac centrifugal compressor and a low frequency high blow energy drifter specifically designed for our hard rock (Basalt) encountered at Eikenhof Quarry south of Johannesburg and surrounding areas.

The development of a 30000cfm Centac didn’t happen by chance and in all probability may not have happened were it not for Bob Baker who looked after the mining houses and one day reported that he was flogging a dead horse by trying to sell 12000cfm Centacs, which was the maximum capacity of Centac at the time, to the mines. Bob was adamant that if we wanted the business we had to convince Vignate (the IngersollRand manufacturing facility for the Centac compressors in Italy) that we needed a 30000cfm Centac to sell to the mines or we were wasting our time.After not too much deliberation by top management, Bob Baker and the late Jimmy Millan were on their way to Vignate to convince the Italians that Centac had to go back to the drawing board. Following an extensive meeting the design engineers saw merit in the request and Centac went back to the drawing board.The first two RX850-3 stage 30000cfm Centacs less motors with a Nett Mass of 39 metric Ton were flown in to Jan Smuts in Safair’s C 130 Jumbo Jet and were commissioned at Goldfields-Kloof GM in December 1982.The rest is history. Centac compressors continued to pour into the country in various capacities and for varied applications.

SEEN THE RELUCTANCE TO CHANGE TO MODERN TECHNOLOGY My first attempt to sell a 12000cfm Centac was at the New Consort Mine in Barberton.This made me realize early in my career how reluctant people were, and still are, to change.The resident engineer was the late Mr.Van Multits who had been metal stitching the housings of a bank of Ingersoll- Rand ESH & ESV horizontal and vertical reciprocating compressors for years.We spoke about Hans Hornschuche who was the developer of Centac and the

final stage speed of 45000rpm. His reply brought the house down in the IR bar later that week. He said,“My boy, either you don’t know what you’re talking about or Hans Hornschuche is a lunatic. I’ve got enough trouble trying to keep your reciprocating compressors alive and they only run at 760 rpm”.

I not only worked for gentleman in my time with Ingersoll-Rand but with people who supported the CPHA and you had to have a very good excuse if you didn’t attend the meetings and the many functions/dinners organized by dedicated founder members Dave Reynolds,Alan Hoffmann, Brian Shekleton, John Thompson,Tom Stubbs,Tony Tibbitt and not to mention the work put in by their secretaries. Just like their no nonsense directors, their plant and service managers too would settle for nothing less than the best product, best advice and best service.With this philosophy they forged an industry that grew from strength to strength and gained the respect of all, not just in the hire industry, but all in the construction industry that relied on the CPHA to build one of the best infrastructures in the world.

I pay homage to the many people I had the pleasure of meeting and working with on an ongoing selection of the best equipment for their fleets and the contracts that their companies had tendered for. Some such feats are the Reading Interchange and the Alberton, Rand Airport and Crown Interchange system that were vital links towards a fast and efficient road system that would connect metropolitan areas have all come to fruition and that we all take for granted today.

The Drakensberg Pump Storage Scheme, the Ascent to Katse Dam where LTA’s international award winning “Hairpin Bend” where the operator’s seat of an Ingersoll-Rand SP56 vibratory compactor was a scary place to be, and the Katse Dam project itself. I was at the beck and call of the estimating and tender departments of LTA, Ground Engineering and Shaft Sinkers during the tender stages of the above projects to establish the requirement and the selection of the equipment for the above projects including a demonstration of vibratory compactors for the Reading Interchange. I loved every minute of it.

The late Adam Myburg, mechanical and, if I’m not mistaken, electrical engineer for Shaft Sinkers, caused my heart to sink into my boots when he told me that the basket boom for the roof bolt operator of the Jumbo that we supplied was a meter longer that the drill face boom and the machine had to be underground at 6 a.m. the next morning. I called for marking equipment and their best boilermaker and marked out the excess meter at a 45% angle.The boilermaker went about his business of cutting off the unwanted meter with a blow torch, ground the weld preps and welded it together.The machine went underground the next morning and worked throughout the five-year duration of the contract without a glitch. It later emerged that there was a similar contract in Brazil and Seattle, the IngersollRand rock drill manufacturing facility in the US, got the booms mixed up and fitted the boom intended for Brazil machine to the Drakon machine. For me a hair-raising experience but I relished being branded the “salesman in overalls” by the great Adam Myburg.

Those were the days when institutions like TPA,Water Affairs, Rand Water Board, South Africa Railways, Eskom, Municipalities and others shared the business and tenders out equally to ensure that there was an adequate presence of strong construction companies in the country.There were down turns in our economy but when funds were available the government did not hesitate to put tenders out for projects like Dracon

“the Drakensberg pump storage scheme” to generate electricity, the Ascent to Katse Dam and the Katse Dam project itself, Concor’s great feat, the Reading Interchange,Alberton, Rand Airport and Crown Interchange.

As I mentioned before we had hair raising experiences during the Drakensberg projects and another such an experience was on the Ascent to the Katse.The project was barely underway when the first snow started falling.We had supplied eight (8) ECM350 Crawlairs and eight 900cfm portable compressors. One of the portables went into a mud slide, fell down a mountain and were it not for the bull hose snapping and cutting off the air supply to the spring applied automatic breaking system the Crawair would have gone with it.We replaced the portable before LTA’s insurance company even came to site to assess what had happened.

I witnessed the great concern the steps taken to maintain the structural integrity of the Jozini Dam wall when Domoina caused the Pongola River to fill Jozini in five days as opposed to the calculated eighteen months to two years according to the flow rate calculations prior to Domoina.The Jozini is now called the Pongolapoort Dam. WHEN JOHANNESBURG WAS AN ELEGANT CITY Ingersoll-Rand Crawlair portable combinations drilled the foundations for the Carlton Hotel which later housed the famous Three Ships Restaurant. Johannesburg was already an elegant city with restaurants like the Coimbra,The252, His Majesties Sellers,The LM in Hilbrow,The Perfumed Gardens in Joubert Park,The Fishermans Grotto in Bree Street and host of others that provided excellent service and cuisine that attracted the rich and famous of the overseas entertainment.

The Colosseum Theatre in Commissioner which was opened by General Jannie Smuts in October 1933 attracted famous stars like Frankie Laine, Cliff Richards and The Shadows, Johnny Ray and Lovelace Watkins and many more. Some of them returning for repeat performances.There were cranes wherever you looked in the Golden City.The late Frank Gissing sales manager for the IR industrial division once said,“Try shutting down this city, it would be impossible”.Very unfortunately today that statement is debatable.

T’was the year that Saipem, the Italian fuel pipe laying contractor and Alfred Mc Alpine the coal mining contractor came to town.Those years international travel made for good international networking and I was advised by my counterpart in IR Italy that a certain Mr.Vasco Boscaino had been appointed GM for the Durban to Johannesburg oil pipe line project. I invited him to dinner at the Coimbra. I could tell from our telecom that it was not going to fair well with communications. I called a colleague, the late Tom Gibson who spoke five different languages one of them being Italian. I sat between them, big mistake, they spoke Italian the whole night and the next morning I had a stiff neck.We acquired the bulk of the business.

This article would not be complete without me paying tribute to colleagues that I am privileged to have known and worked with.

people gave him credit for. On site we would brave the cold and at night we would wine and dine the hierarchy of construction companies that formed the consortium that built the Katse Dam. Bouygues, Hochtief and Impregilo come to mind. Impregilo was our favorite because they always brought their own imported Italian wine.We never did convince those Italians that South Africa produces the best wine in the world.

Dennis Stonefield and the late Gerald Michau and the late Les Dalgety.Together we visited five different Ingersoll-Rand plants in Europe whilst attending an executive management course. Dennis, no one will believe we met Omar Sharif in the hotel we stayed at in Madrid Spain.

My friend and colleague of over forty years, Bob Baker, with whom I’ve reached many a memorable milestone and without whose persistence to send Centac back to the drawing board, we would not have a 30000cfm Centac centrifugal compressor today.

As was the case with Air Supreme we strategically aligned Bobcor Trading with top quality product manufacturers who understood our need for reliable service and I hope that all our customers will continue to support Bobcor Trading.

The late Doug Scott managing director Ingersoll-Rand South Africa to whom I owe a debt of gratitude for his support and I’m sure his tolerance from time to time. For his advice on how to look after the “OI” whilst I was running the Zimbabwe Company.

BEFORE THE DAYS OF CELL PHONES. In closing I would like to thank all that I have been associated with in business and otherwise. I believe I have served our industries well. I have slept under the stars alongside water well drill rigs at government funded projects in Pongola and in Dwaalboom after traveling all day to locate drill sites and on occasion been given a Bush Pig for my trouble.

I have seen the jubilation when water was struck and the disappointment and tears when a water well yielded nothing but dust and often it was only out of the goodness of the water well contractor that a second hole was drilled sometimes with success and sometime without. I’ve seen the “saamstaan” of boere who could not see their neighbours leave their farms and would chip in to run pipelines from their own boreholes to give them water.

I have visited many countries on business trips and can’t decide which of these three major cities was the biggest eye opener; New York with its three different starting times to avoid traffic congestion; Zurich where everything works on time every time or Mumbai where, despite the hustle and the bustle and thousands of smart university graduates walking the streets unemployed, good products are still produced.

I thank my wife Estelle and children Sharon, Shane and Chantell for their understanding when I had to travel abroad, sometimes for weeks at a time.A special thank you to my son Shane and daughter Chantell who tendered the home front while my wife and I relocated to Zimbabwe for almost five years.

I marvel at modern IT technology and wonder where some of us would be if it were available to us in our careers. It reminds me of what the main speaker at Piet Pretorius’s 50th Birthday party said.“With his selfdesigned water well rigs built by Piet and his lifelong friend Mossie, I wonder where he would be and how much better his rigs would be if he was a degreed engineer”. Not much better than the way you built them Piet, my friend.

And now my friends, colleagues and dear valued customers you will find me “On a mountain pass is a patch of grass cultivated just for me”, my home in Kibler Heights south of Johannesburg.
