2020 WILL BE REMEMBERED as the year that saw classrooms emptied, sports seasons cut short, and events postponed as schools across the country transitioned to a new mode of teaching and learning. While it wasn’t always easy to meet the challenges of distance learning, the entire Dunham community—students, parents, faculty, and staff—found creative ways to stay connected and provide those personal touches that make a difference in the social, emotional, and spiritual well-being of our students.

Dear Dunham Family, SO MUCH HAS CHANGED IN OUR WORLD over the past six months. The world has been interrupted, and our communities have faced uncertainty, civil unrest, and fear.

However, in stark contrast to the panic and doubt exhibited throughout the COVID-19 crisis, as well as the racial and social conflicts prevalent in our society, The Dunham School has been steadfast, committed, and unified in executing its mission to educate the minds and hearts of our students for Christ.

Last spring, we adapted swiftly to continue learning at the highest possible level through technology and creativity and found ways to celebrate the Class of 2020 safely and in keeping with the traditions that are held most dear by our students and their families. As we look forward to the fall semester, we have partnered with health professionals to establish new safety protocols and best practices that will enable us to return to faceto-face learning, and we will continue to bring people together to stand for biblical truth, unity, and equality.

It has been my long-held belief that Christian independent schools should lead the way by reflecting biblical excellence and setting an example for others to follow. Unequivocally, I can say that Dunham does lead the way—not only in Baton Rouge, but also in the state and beyond. The dedication of our entire community, including faculty, staff, students, parents, grandparents, and alumni, has enabled the school to be a shining example in the midst of uncertainty, and our commitment to our mission remains evident for all to see.

“In accordance with Governor Edwards’ announcement today regarding school closures in Louisiana to combat the spread of COVID-19, The Dunham School will transition to a distance learning model beginning Monday, March 16 …” Head of School Update March 13, 2020 With that communication, the Dunham community shifted into a new mode of teaching and learning. Thanks to a well-developed contingency plan for E-school, the dedication of the faculty, and an already stellar innovation and technology program, the transition to distance learning—dubbed #DunhamAtDistance on social media—was seamless, ensuring that learning continued at the highest level.

Over the course of a weekend, family rooms became classrooms, kitchens morphed into science labs, and backyards doubled as gyms and dance studios.

Lively Harkness discussions took place on Google Hangouts. Lower School math lessons incorporated household items. Music classes continued with homemade instruments, and weekly praise and worship chapel services went digital, demonstrating that Dunham’s commitment to educate minds and hearts for Christ transcends the physical boundaries of our campus.

“Our teachers never missed a beat,” said Director of Innovation and Technology Nikole Blanchard. “They went the extra mile in preparing virtual lessons that engaged students and demonstrated their subject area expertise, creativity, and savvy with technology.”

Although the initial plan was to return to campus at the conclusion of the Easter break on April 14, the extension of the governor’s stay-at-home order until May 15 resulted in the continuation of distance learning through the end of the school year. A ban on large group gatherings prompted the community to rethink traditional year-end celebrations and find creative ways to stay connected, whether it was through hand-delivered banners and signs, car parades, drive-in movie style awards ceremonies, or a social media takeover to honor the Class of 2020.

“During the past few months, we’ve seen the Dunham community shine brighter than ever, even in the midst of a global pandemic,” said Head of School Steve Eagleton. “I firmly believe that God will bring our entire school through this time as a stronger, more close-knit community of faith that continues to set the bar for Christian education in the city of Baton Rouge and across the country.”

Seventh-Grader Helps Launch Remote Learning for Nuclear Power Plant

When Dunham parent Chris Pontti realized he needed to institute remote learning with operators at his company’s nuclear power plant, he knew he needed to find a way to share files outside of the company’s internal network but had no established process in place. Because Dunham was “already rolling with distance learning,” Chris asked his daughter, Reynolds Pontti ’25, for some help.

“Within 15 minutes, she had me set up in Google Classroom.

Over the weekend, with Reynolds’ technical directing, I was able to launch remote learning for our site,” he said. “It is now a model in the industry, and I am the go-to guy, helping plants in our company and beyond getting this rolled out, providing support and lessons learned. These kids are prepared and making differences beyond the classroom.”

Dunham Receives Seventh Apple Distinguished School Award

D

uring the home football game on October 18, Head of School Steve Eagleton announced to the Dunham community that Dunham had earned its seventh consecutive Apple Distinguished School Award for the continuous use of innovation in learning, teaching, and the school environment. Designated as an Apple Distinguished School since 2011, Dunham is the only school in Louisiana— and one of only a few in the nation—to hold seven awards.

“The credit for this award goes to our teachers, students, and technology department for the ways that they apply technology to achieve greater academic success and experience transformational learning,” says Eagleton.

“When we talk about innovation and creativity at Dunham, we’re really talking about students having the ability to understand coding and the creative tools enabled by The Dunham community celebrates Apple Distinguished School Week in February. technology. In addition to helping our students engage with the curriculum to a greater degree, we’re building excitement and equipping them with important future-ready skills that have real-life relevance and application.”

To celebrate this milestone achievement, February 10–14 was designated as Apple Distinguished School week with fun activities and surprises unveiled for faculty and students each day.

IT ALL STARTED ON A NAPKIN. When Director of Innovation and Technology Nikole Blanchard joined the school in 2008, one of her first assignments was to draft an implementation plan for a 1-to-1 laptop program. At the time, the consensus was that the school would roll out the program division by division over a three-year period.

As Blanchard recalls, the school’s administrative team held a number of meetings with computer vendors. “Honestly, we thought Dunham was going to remain a Dell school since we had always used Dell computers. However, after talking to the various vendors, we still didn’t feel like we’d found the right partnership to get us to where we wanted to be three to five years down the road,” she says.

The perfect partnership was not discovered until a group from Dunham visited Apple headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., in the spring of 2009. Through executive briefings, the team witnessed Apple’s commitment to education and saw what a school of the future could look like. Excited about the possibilities, the group prepared to return to Baton Rouge to map out a new three-year plan. But, then, at the airport, everything changed.

“We were waiting for our flight home and dreaming,” says Blanchard. “I recall vividly that I was sketching out a timeline for a three-year implementation plan when Mr. Welch, our headmaster at the time, turned around with a plan scribbled on a 8

paper napkin and said, ‘We’re going to do this for all grades next year.’ Hence, the famous napkin story that started an incredible journey in technology and innovation.”

“Looking back on that moment,” she continues, “feels surreal. It was April, and the next year started in just three months.

I remember thinking it was impossible, but we made it. I’m honored to have been a part of that process and am excited about the future of our program.”

From producing movies about ancient Rome to creating a video reflection to share with peers, students in all grades experience a cutting-edge curriculum. Peeking in classrooms, it’s not unusual to find kindergarten students connecting with students in Japan, Lower School students using CAD design, Middle School students exploring distant lands through virtual reality, or biology students bringing a plant cell to life with augmented reality.

In Ronda Isaminger’s fourth-grade classroom, coding has brought excitement and energy to language arts. “Coding is a real-world, real-life application. We talk about this a lot as a class—the fact that coding is something they are going to be doing for years to come, and I love the fact that we have an opportunity to incorporate it into reading and writing so students know that this isn’t just a math thing or a science thing, but this is a language thing. They’re excited about what they’re

learning, and you can see their learning moving to a new level because of that excitement.”

each one is an Apple Teacher, a formal recognition from Apple indicating that they understand how to utilize technology to transform teaching and learning.

Dunham’s remarkable success in technology integration has not gone unnoticed. Recognized as one of the most innovative schools in the nation, Dunham has been asked to participate in separate research studies on best practices in educational technology by Gallup, Inc. and Apple.

As Steve Eagleton explains, “Apple continues to look at what we do and asks us to present it to other people and be involved in research projects. They view us as one of the 10 most innovative schools in the country. And it’s not just because we buy Apple products. It’s because they’ve been on our campus, they’ve seen what our teachers and students are doing, and they want other schools to adopt those practices.”

AN EXCEPTIONAL

Support System At the heart of the Dunham technology is the Tiger Tech Center. Modeled after the Apple Genius Bar, the help center encourages students to sit and work with the technology staff to problem solve or learn a new skill. From assisting a student who needs access or planning technology-rich lessons with teachers, our tech staff provides exceptional service. Face-to-face support is provided before, during, and after the school day.

Student teachers from LSU, Southern University, and Southeastern Louisiana University attended training sessions in the morning and then put their newfound skills to the test by engaging in technology applications with visiting students from Dufrocq and Mayfair Elementary Schools.

zSpace Mobile Classroom When the zSpace Mobile Classroom made a stop at Dunham during a national tour across the states, students and teachers alike had opportunities to explore the human heart, track the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly, play chess, and manipulate molecules using the latest in augmented and virtual reality technology. The unique mobile classroom, developed by Silicon Valley education company zSpace, featured virtual experiences designed to enhance STEM explorations as well as art and social studies programs.

Using a stylus and tracking glasses, Dunham students interacted with the zSpace computer to lift and manipulate virtual objects from the screen and discover underlying concepts. Unlike head-mounted virtual reality gear, the zSpace technology enabled interaction and group collaboration and empowered students to learn by doing in an environment where it was easy to undo mistakes, make changes, and not worry about safety or cleanup.

32 Students Recognized as 2019 AP Scholars

THIRTY-TWO DUNHAM STUDENTS were recognized as 2019 Advanced Placement® (AP) Scholars by the College Board based on their outstanding performances on AP exams. Last spring, 73 Dunham students sat for 148 AP exams, with 85 percent earning a score of 3 or higher, making them eligible to receive college credit, upper-level placement, or both. The average score of all tests taken

by Dunham students was 3.6. The national average is 2.89.

Kathryn Dunphy ’19 and Parker Harris ’19 were named National AP Scholars. This designation is awarded to students who average a minimum score of 4 (on a 5-point scale) on all AP exams taken and a score of 4 or higher on at least eight of these exams.

In addition, Dunphy and Harris, along with the following students, received AP Scholar with Distinction honors for earning an average score of 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more exams: Conner Bown ’19, Sylvia Xiaojun Chen ’19, Maggie Kate Coast ’19, Ireland Coates ’19, Emma Davis ’19, Tré Landaiche ’20, Reed Landry ’19, Eric Ponder ’19, Isabella Rovere ’19, Luke Russell ’19, Anushka Singh ’19, Emma Spencer ’20, Ciara Venable ’20, and Jessica Williams ’19.

“Our students’ strong performance on these AP exams reflects the quality of our teaching and the growth of our AP program,” says Upper School Director Amanda McIlwain. “These scores send a strong signal to college admissions officers that our students are well prepared for success in their undergraduate programs.”

Created by the College Board in 1955, the AP program is recognized as a standard of excellence in education. Dunham currently offers 25 AP courses for students who are ready to tackle the challenge of college-level work.

Seniors Earn National Merit Recognition

Ciara Venable ’20

Ciara Venable ’20 was named a National Merit Scholar, and Tré Landaiche ’20 was recognized as a National Merit Commended Student in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

As a National Merit Scholar, Ciara received a scholarship valued at $109,000 to attend the University of Southern Mississippi, where she plans to study finance. Ciara joins a select group of approximately 7,600 students nationwide who have been awarded more than $30 million in scholarships.

“We are so proud of these students and all that they continue to achieve. They are gifted students who maximize their potential with an unparalleled work ethic,” says Director of Upper School Amanda McIlwain. “These outstanding seniors embody the pursuit of excellence in all things which we value greatly at Dunham.”

High school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT-NMSQT) in the fall of their junior year.

Tiger Scholars Advance to National History Bee

Based on their strong individual performances at the Louisiana History Bee, Tiger history buffs Willie Leggett ’20 and Jason Perè ’22 qualified for the National History Bee. Willie placed fourth in the state for the Varsity History Bee competition and also qualified for nationals in the US History competition. Jason earned third place in the state in the Junior Varsity History Bee competition.

Cajun Night Projects Find New Homes Several of the Louisiana landmarks created by third-graders for Cajun Night have found new homes, including Jenna Parsons’ replica of the Knock Knock Children’s Museum and Drew Deville’s model of the Old Governor’s Mansion.

Exploring the Nation’s Capital In October, seventh-grade students and many of their parents participated in Christian Discoveries—a hands-on, interactive trip to Washington, D.C. In addition to visiting historic sites, the trip allowed students to develop skills in public speaking and worship leadership, as well as an appreciation for the Christian principles on which the nation was founded. In preparation, students conducted research on the sites they would visit. As the group traveled through the nation’s capital, students became the tour guides, sharing their knowledge with classmates and parents. Highlights of

the trip included stops at the White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, the War Memorials, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, the Library of Congress, Mount Vernon, the African-American Museum, and the Holocaust Museum. In addition, the class took part in in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery and a prayer service in the Chapel of St. Joseph of Arimathea in the National Cathedral, where they prayed for and with members of the federal government.

Fourth-Graders Tackle Chair Challenge

Challenged to make a newspaper chair that could hold an adult’s weight for at least 30 seconds, last year’s industrious fourth-graders went to work in the Lower School Innovation Lab. Students worked in teams, with each group employing the engineering design process to create their idea and then bring it to life using unlimited newspaper and one roll of masking tape.

The winning design for the most stable chair belonged to the team of Noah Anders, Lauryn Bellizaire, and Faith Gardner. The second place chair, built by the team of Tristen Ebbs, William Reier, Madison Sizer, and Emily Weiner, also held the judge’s weight for 30 seconds. The chair designed by the team of Lukin Kelley, Alex Gustafson, Robin Soltau, and Foster Yan-Hamby received Honorable Mention with most design points earned.

Budding Architects Build Their Ideal City Some of our budding Dunham builders brought their creativity and imagination to the “If Kids Can Build the City” event sponsored by AIA Baton Rouge and CSRS at the Capitol Museum. The interactive experience encouraged students to build a small-scale version of their ideal city. “It was so exciting and fun to see our Dunham students use engineering skills learned in Innovation Lab,” said Director of Innovation and Technology Nikole Blanchard. “Many began by sketching their idea, which is key to the engineering cycle. From water slides to frog hotels, imagination and creativity filled in the air.”

GRADUATES IN THE CLASS OF 2020 were born in the aftermath of 9/11, started preschool in between Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, entered high school days before the historic flood of 2016, and graduated in the midst of a pandemic. Although their senior year ended far differently than anyone could have predicted, this year’s graduates emerged resilient, strong, and ready to begin the next chapter of their lives. We are grateful that we were able to gather to celebrate baccalaureate and graduation with this special class in June.

Mitch McIlwain ’94 Named 2020 Liz Peters Master Teacher Mitch McIlwain ’94 received the 2020 Liz Peters Master Teacher Award during Dunham’s commencement ceremony on June 13. This annual award, given in memory of the late Liz Peters, recognizes a member of the faculty for continued excellence in the classroom.

Mitch McIlwain has faithfully served The Dunham School for more than 20 years as an Upper School teacher and coach. After graduating as the Class of 1994 salutatorian, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana Tech University and a Master of Education from LSU before joining the faculty as a history teacher in 2000.

During his tenure, he has taught a combination of American History, AP United States History, and AP American Government and has served as the history department chair for the past 17 years, mentoring new faculty and supervising the implementation of the departmental curriculum and the school’s academic strategic plan goals.

A 2018 inductee into the Athletics Hall of Fame as a result of his own stellar career in football and baseball, he has coached Dunham baseball, football, and boys golf. In addition, he is a service mentor in Dunham’s Institute of Leadership and a huddle leader for the school’s FCA program.

In presenting Coach McIlwain with the 2020 award, Lower School Head and Dean of Faculty Deedra LaPlace said, “His calm and quiet demeanor outside of the classroom belies his lively and energetic personality and delivery inside of the classroom, garnering a reputation for outstanding teaching that makes history come alive for students in a way that is both exciting and memorable.”

Remembering Terry Harrison

It is with a mixture of profound sadness and praise for a Christian life well lived that we share the news of the passing of former Head of School Terry Harrison, who passed away on December 18, 2019, in Newnan, Georgia.

In 1981, Mr. Harrison was hired as the first head of school for what was then The Chapel School, a position he held until 1986. Believing that the school would “go far in nurturing sound minds and bodies for positive citizenship and Christian commitment,” Mr. Harrison instituted a number a cherished traditions, including the ringing of the bell at the Lower School Moving Up Ceremony and at graduation.

Noting Mr. Harrison’s lasting impact on the school, current Head of School Steve Eagleton said, “Terry’s lasting legacy was the gift of the faculty handbook and the educational structure that served as a guide for Christian teachers to educate both the mind and the heart for Christ with excellence. He was instrumental in charting the initial course for our school, and we continue to reap the benefits and blessings to this day.”

Born in 1932 in Ft. Riley, Kansas, Mr. Harrison held an undergraduate degree from Wheaton College and graduate degrees from both Wheaton Graduate School and the State University of New York. After serving as an officer in the United States Marine Corps, Mr. Harrison worked as a teacher and administrator at The Stony Brook School in New York and as head of school at Charlotte Christian School in North Carolina, before arriving in Baton Rouge.

He continued his life of service after retirement as an active member of Peachtree City United Methodist Church.

The Dunham community offers sincerest condolences to Mr. Harrison’s wife, Andrea, and his six children, 15 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Fine Arts Department Takes Manhattan The Dunham Fine Arts faculty traveled to New York City last summer to attend a series of professional development workshops, including the Broadway Teaching Group summer session, the Carnegie Hall Summer Educator Workshop, and Summer Institute: Connecting Collections, co-hosted by the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Addition of School Nurse Expands Wellness Program Connie Jenkins, RN, joined the staff last fall as a full-time school nurse.

Ms. Jenkins, who previously provided oversight of nurses and health centers in 26 elementary, middle, and high schools in East Baton Rouge Parish, joins the athletic trainer to complete our campus medical staff.

“I am thrilled to welcome Connie Jenkins to serve as our school nurse. We are committed to constantly improving the standard of safety, health, and wellness care that the school provides,” said Head of School Steve Eagleton.

“The addition of a school nurse also meets a strategic plan goal for the school.”

Neil Weiner What is your goal for each student athlete?

We want to train competitors and build winning programs, but we want to do that in a way that honors God and presents the gospel to every athlete. My goal for kids is that they become the best they can be in whatever sport they choose and also realize that it can be their act of worship as well.

What changes have you seen in the athletic program?

The way our athletes think about themselves has changed dramatically. When I first got here, I did a survey and asked the kids, “What do you think other schools say about Dunham football?” All the responses were negative: “soft, weak, quitters, losers.” Last year, I sent out the same question, and the responses were “winners, champions, tough, physical, heart.”

I give credit to Upper School Director Amanda McIlwain, who is all about celebrating successes. So every week in morning meeting, I point out the great things we have going on; I think if the positives are what kids hear, they believe in themselves.

S

ince joining Dunham in 2014, Director of Athletics Neil Weiner has overseen the growth of the school’s athletic program across all sports, including football, where he serves as head coach. Following a successful season, which included the football team’s third consecutive district championship title and a trip to the state semfinals, Coach Weiner was voted the 2019 Coach of the Year by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association (LSWA), an honor he shares with his father, former Catholic High coach Dale Weiner.

With characteristic humbleness, Coach Weiner gives the credit to his coaching staff and players. “It’s a great honor, and I’m glad to see our team and our coaching staff get recognized because I see it as a team honor,” he says. “They all put so much work into what we did last year. Our defensive coordinator, Randy Leindecker, the entire coaching staff, and all our players put everything they had into the season.”

Deeply respected on and off of the field, Coach Weiner and his wife, Whitney, are the parents of three Dunham students, Matthew ’22, Abigail ’24, and Emily ’28.

What are your goals for the Dunham athletic program?

Expanding sports opportunities for girls and strengthening the Lower and Middle School P.E. programs are two of our strategic goals. All of our male sports are trending upward, and our female sports programs are getting stronger, but we want to make sure that our girls continue to compete at the highest levels and have access to female role models they can listen to, talk to, and be motivated by in an athletic arena. Kudos to Deedra LaPlace and Mary Theriot for having the courage and boldness to expand their division’s P.E. programs so that Lower School students can have P.E. every day and Middle School students can have it four times a week. In Upper School, I’d like to see overall athletic performance training take place by increasing offerings, such as the weightlifting class we have now. Ideally, these changes will create habits that will make a huge difference not only in our athletic program, but also in our students’ lives.

Who is your mentor?

My father, Dale Weiner, is my favorite coach, and he’s a mentor. It’s pretty neat to share the LSWA recognition with my dad. It is special that we can share something like this.

The Sweepstakes Trophy is the highest award presented in the annual competition.

State Champions!

BOYS BASKETBALL Exceeding everyone’s expectations but their own, the boys basketball team, coached by Jonathan Pixley, Chad Myers ’97, and TJ Honore, claimed their second state championship title in three years. After ending the regular season as the number one seed in Division 2A and bringing home a 59-55 win over Isidore Newman in the semifinals, the team faced hometown rival Episcopal in a championship game that was poised to be the largest at-home athletic event in school history. Although COVID-19 restrictions forced the boys to play in front of an empty house, the team waged a hard fought battle that culminated in a 48-47 victory. During the season, Coach Pixley clinched his 400th career win, Division 2A MVP Carlos Stewart ’21 reached the 1,000 point milestone, and Dunham Male Athlete of the Year Salle Wilson ’20 was one of only five players selected for the Max Preps All-State 1st Team.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Although the Lady Tigers basketball team faced ups and downs during the 2019–2020 season, they gained valuable experience and fought through adversity to make it to the playoffs in February. At the conclusion of the season, Kyla Johnson ’20 and Molly Coast ’23 were named to the All-District 1st Team. “The team probably played their best game in the last game of the season, which was a sign that the team didn’t give up, and they didn’t quit,” said Head Coach Chad Myers ’97.

Tigers on the Prowl: Fall Sports Recap

CROSS COUNTRY The cross country team was strong last fall, setting a number of personal records and recording the highest men’s team finish at the state championship since 2006. In addition to setting the school record for the Highland Road Park course with a time of 15:27.2, John Walker McDonald ’22 finished the season as metro and state runner-up and was named to the All-Metro and All-State teams. Riley Ries ’23 was fourth in the state and was selected for the composite All-State team and second team All-Metro.

FOOTBALL Faced with replacing one of the most talented senior classes in school history, the 2020 senior class rose to the challenge, finishing the season with a 10-2 record, a district championship, and a state semifinal appearance following a win over Isidore Newman in the quarterfinals. Sophomore running back Kalanté Wilson was the team’s Offensive MVP. Senior Rhett Guidry was named to the All-State and All-Metro 1st Teams and was the Defensive MVP for District 8-2A. Congratulations to Head Coach Neil Weiner, who was honored as the State Coach of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

SWIMMING The swim team was small but mighty last year. Our four boys pushed themselves in practice everyday, and the results were apparent when it came time to compete. Best times were seen from all in addition to top-tier finishes at city and state championships. Congratulations to Aqua Tiger Patrick Murphy ’22 who was named to the All-Metro Boys Swim Team after finishing first in the 200m Individual Medley and second in the 100m breaststroke in the Division IV State Meet. There is a bright future ahead of this group of swimmers!

VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team posted its best season record in school history, going 37-4 in the 2019 season and garnering a number of post-season honors. Led by seniors Taylor Hurst, Micheala Fennell, and Hannah Pixley, the overwhelmingly young team included freshman setter Caylin Pixley, eighth-grade middle Kennedy Stewart, and freshman middle Jada Hayes. In tournament play, the Lady Tigers finished as runner-up in the South Louisiana Invitational, were champions at the Rumble in the Jungle, were semifinalists in the Terrebonne tournament, and went undefeated in the Dunham Skeleton Classic which gave them a #2 ranking in Division IV as they headed into the state tournament. Unfortunately, the girls were upset in a heartbreaking 15-13 fifth set loss to Notre Dame in the quarterfinals.

During the season, Taylor Hurst set the school record for assists with more than 2,500 for her career. Female Athlete of the Year Hannah Pixley also set the school record for kills and digs with 1,336 and 1, 432 digs respectively and more than 1,000 serve receptions.

Tiger Trio Invited to NCAA Basketball Academy In July of 2019, Tiger basketball players Jase Augustus ’21, Carlos Stewart ’21, and Salle Wilson ’20 were selected to participate in the NCAA Basketball Academy at the University of Houston. During the invitation-only opportunity, the trio participated in skills sessions, drills, and games. Division I college coaches were also in attendance to evaluate players.

JUNIOR GOLF Congratulations to second-grader Owen Lejeune who was selected to play for Team Louisiana in the 2019 Governor’s Cup Louisiana vs. Mississippi Junior Golf Tournament held in Diamondhead, Miss., in November. Owen was one of 12 junior players chosen on the basis of tournament scores, accomplishments, and an essay.

Elizabeth Adams ’04 fter graduating from Dunham in 2004, Elizabeth Adams received a bachelor’s degree in political science from The University of Notre Dame. She also earned a Juris Doctor from Notre Dame Law School and Master of Laws (Global Energy, International Arbitration and Environmental Law) from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law. She currently lives in New Orleans where she serves as the senior manager of innovation for Entergy. Elizabeth was recently selected as a 2020 Presidential Leadership Scholar.

I lead innovation teams for Entergy, but I began my career as a regulatory attorney for utilities. After a few years in private practice, I joined Entergy as an in-house attorney, representing the Louisiana operating company in regulatory matters before the state commission.

Although I no longer practice law, my legal education and experience continue to serve me well in my current role as a senior manager of innovation. As an innovation leader with Entergy, I focus on incorporating new technologies and introducing business approaches to secure positive outcomes for our customers and communities.

In what ways did Dunham prepare you?

I’m originally from Cut Off, and my family moved to Baton Rouge so that my sister and I could attend Dunham. My parents always emphasized the value of a strong education, and the schooling they provided me at Dunham and then at Notre Dame is one of their greatest gifts. Dunham prepared me for rigorous college and graduate programs and strengthened my faith foundation. The teachers, friends, and lessons that Dunham provided me set me up for success.

What do you consider your greatest achievement so far?

I am constantly setting new goals for myself. Once I achieve something that I have been working towards, I

set new milestones to reach. Professionally, I am most proud of the team I lead. That team recently launched a large-scale electrification project designed to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in South Louisiana.

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing now, what would be your alternate profession or dream job?

I love what I do because I get to play a role in responsibly using natural resources. If I were not working in the energy sector, I would perhaps be doing policy work around environmental issues or land conservation.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An astronaut—having reasonable expectations has never been one of my strengths.

What’s one thing someone wouldn’t know about you?

I love to travel and try to do a big hike or international trip every year.

If you could go back and give advice to yourself as a senior at Dunham, what would you say?

The most valuable thing you can build is a village of people to walk through life with you, providing good company, wise counsel, and course correction along the way.

What do you like to do for fun?

Travel to new places with friends and family.

Favorite thing to do in New Orleans?

New Orleans is so unique; I really enjoy sharing the city with friends visiting from other places.

What’s your favorite book?

I read quite a bit, and it’s tough to pick just one. I have always loved children’s literature, and The Velveteen Rabbit is an all-time favorite.

Fueling Sports Performance Through Nutrition:

Claire Gilbert ’13

C

laire Gilbert earned a bachelor’s degree in dietetics from LSU and a master’s degree in nutrition from Samford University. She now lives in Dallas where she works as a performance dietitian intern for Scott Sehnert, the director of sports performance for the Dallas Cowboys.

How did you get into the field you’re in now?

Food is a great way to connect with people. Everyone has to eat, so no matter what your background is, you can always start the conversation with food. As I began my college career, I began in dietetics wanting to be in children’s nutrition. As I continued my studies, my passion switched to sports performance. God really is the one who brought me where I am today. My career choice evolved over my time in college and grad school, and starting out I never would have thought I would be where I am now.

In what ways did Dunham prepare you?

The Harkness table taught me how to have discussions with my peers and teachers. In college, I felt comfortable talking to professors, and I think it plays a part in how I can easily start conversations today. Dunham’s bible classes also gave me a firm foundation in biblical knowledge, which was key for my faith entering college and the workplace.

What do you consider your greatest achievement so far?

Maybe it sounds cheesy, but I would say each step has felt like “the greatest achievement.” Graduating from college and grad school, passing my RD exam, moving to new states, and starting new jobs all felt really great.

I’ve learned that each step is a great achievement that can lead you to something different and sometimes unexpected.

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing now, what would be your alternate profession or dream job?

I could say many things, but I think deep down I would want to be a DJ. As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a dentist for a long time, then a writer, next a fashion designer, a traveler, and even surgeon for a short period of time.

What’s one thing someone wouldn’t know about you?

I worked at New York Bagel as a cashier for a bit in college.

If you could go back and give advice to yourself as a senior at Dunham, what would you say?

Work as hard as you can to get where you want to be, but at the same time, surrender it all to the Lord so he can direct you to where you need to be. Don’t try to control your life.

What do you like to do for fun?

Maybe it’s cliché for a dietitian, but my favorite things are to cook and bake. I like to read, travel, and be outside in any capacity. I didn’t have a TV in college or grad school, so I’m catching up on all the things I never watched.

Favorite thing to do in Dallas?

To be determined … Dallas is the biggest city I have lived in thus far, and there are so many things I haven’t done.

There are lots of good restaurants, music, and museums I want to check out.

What’s your favorite book?

Robert Munson joined Louisiana State University in 2017 as the senior associate athletic director, external communications. He is responsible for leading the athletic department’s communications, marketing, and brand engagement teams, including overall brand strategy, strategic communications, sports information, marketing, promotions and fan-experience, creative and digital services, and overseeing in-venue and live media productions on television, video, and radio. Robert traveled with the LSU football team to The White House following the National Championship game.

Lindsay Koch Stratman and husband Aaron moved back to Baton Rouge in December. They have three children, twins Emerson Sally and Samuel Warren (11 months) and Frances Avery (2 ½).

2002

Jennifer Bollinger married Wade Franklin on December 31, 2019, at the Old Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge. Tigers in the wedding included classmates Laura Messer Smith, Katherine Ellard Dantin, Laura Williams Metcalf, and Natalie Ford Woodward, and Katherine Bollinger Lejeune ’04. Jennifer and Wade currently reside in Washington, D.C., where she works for Representative Garret Graves.

Elizabeth Adams has been selected for the 2020 Presidential Leadership Scholars Program. The sixth annual class was chosen after a rigorous application process based on leadership growth potential and personal leadership projects aimed at improving civic engagement by solving a problem in

Over the course of six months, Scholars will travel to each participating presidential center to learn from former presidents, key former administration officials, business and civic leaders, and leading academics. They will study and put into practice varying approaches to leadership and exchange ideas to help strengthen their impact in their communities. The program kicked off in Washington, D.C., on January 28, 2020. Elizabeth is senior manager of innovation for Entergy in New Orleans (see profile on page 48).

Zachary Bateman married Brianna Busby on July 27, 2019, in Ashton Gardens, north of Houston. Classmates Christian Johnson and Nick Lombardo joined the Batemans at the ceremony. The couple enjoyed a honeymoon in St. Lucia. Since returning home to Houston, they’ve had six months full of adventure, including the addition of a puppy named Ollie. Zach is a petroleum engineer with Grizzly Energy, and Bri teaches elementary music at Trinity Classical School and also teaches private piano, violin, and voice lessons.

Derek Stingley, Jr. became the most decorated rookie player in the history of LSU football. Jordan Wright is making a name for himself as a Commodore basketball player, coming off the bench for 11 points in Vanderbilt’s streak-breaking win over LSU on February 5.

Brothers Kobe Semien ’19 and Erik Semien ’17 traveled to Philadelphia for the Army-Navy game. Erik was part of the joint West Point/Annapolis choir that sang the National Anthem before the game.
