here is an increasing number of people working more than one job. In March of this year, the U.S Department of Labor reported that 8.1 million workers held multiple jobs, up almost 2% from 7.9 million in February 2017. This trending high is a continuation from the previous year which hadn’t occurred in more 20 years.

According to Business Insider, "The principal reason workers hold more than one position is that no single job provides a sufficient income.” But instead of just working any multiple jobs, you could have two careers paying you more for doing something you enjoy or even own your own business while working a full-time job. A study conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that Entrepreneurs that remain employed while starting the own business are 33% less likely to fail than those who leave their job to run their new business full time. So based on this finding, it may be safe to assume that in the near future there will be growing numbers of people that own their own business while working a fulltime job. People pursuing two careers at the same time or that own their own business while also working a full-time job are considered to have a dual career. According to an online article in Entrepreneur magazine, “The reality is that the economic shift around changing work habits and structures will undoubtedly affect some in a negative way; and some are being left out by the significant change happening.”

Based on this economic shift that is occurring right now, individuals with a dual career will be the driving force behind the

new global economy and the future. That same article in Entrepreneur says, “That future is one in which people won’t just have one full-time job with a couple of side hustles. Instead, we’re going to see the rise of people working multiple jobs at the same time, up to the equivalent of full -time hours.”

No one will ever tell you that pursuing two careers at the same time is easy. But what they will say to you is how reassuring it feels to have dual streams of income. An article in the Harvard Business Review says “Two careers are better than one. And by committing to two careers, you will produce benefits for both.”

YOUR TIME IS MORE VALUABLE THAN MONEY You may have heard the phrase “Time is Money” but for those with a dual career, you’ve probably found that your time is more valuable than money.

ntrepreneurs know that how they manage their time is very important. Time management can determine the competitive adaptability, profitability, and overall success of their business in the short and long term. Those Entrepreneurs who also have a fulltime career know challenges and expectations can multiply so, how they manage time can be a measurement of overall potential performance and the expected level productivity for a client and an employer. Entrepreneur and Dual Career Professional, Wanda Russell utilizes an “80/20 Principle” she learned and applies every day to help successfully manage her time and the expectations of her employer and clients. According to her “20 percent time equals 80 percent return”. Wanda understands that her capacity to manage time efficiently requires 100 percent of her effort because not only can this dictate her productivity and performance but also credibility and value which drives profitability. She also knows that the remaining 80 percent of her time in each working day will need to be available to deal with any challenges, as well as needs that may arise, both professional and of course personal.

An online article in Forbes says, “Every person, no matter what their passion, needs to revisit the principles of time management from time to time.

However, this topic is particularly critical to entrepreneurs, who struggle with challenges and crises every day that they didn’t anticipate. Effective time management skills are often the best competitive edge.” A very similar sales principle was mentioned in an online article of Entrepreneur and can offer additional context to what Wanda is teaching us with her principle and account. According to the article, “Entrepreneurs don't realize the same 80/20 principle -- the adage that 20 percent of customers equal 80 percent of sales -- applies to every dimension of business and that includes time management.” If we compare these two principles which demonstrate the importance of time management there is no reason we shouldn't be asking ourselves the question; Is my time more valuable than the money in my checking and hopefully, savings account too? If the answer is “No” or you require more time to ponder, then please continue reading. One of his well-known quotes is, “Time is Money.” But did you know the short phrase was just part of the advice he offered to a young tradesman? The advice also contains a parable that offers a proverbial “golden ticket” anyone interested in pursuing a dual career should find most valuable. According to George Fisher’s, “The American Instructor: or Young Man’s Best Companion,” Ben Franklin told the young tradesman to “Remember that time is money. He that can earn ten shillings a day by his labour, and goes abroad, or sits idle one half of that day, though he spends but sixpence during his diversion or idleness, it ought not to be reckoned the only expense; he hath spent or thrown away five shillings besides.” If we focus on the short phrase, it appears that Mr. Franklin is just explaining that he views time as currency. But when we examine his advice in its entirety, we can grasp the larger context of what he is saying; that time is more valuable than physical money. An article in Psychology Today states that “Most people look at their bank accounts with great attention and assess how much money they have to spend, to invest, and to give away… But, they don’t look at their time the same way and end up wasting this incredibly valuable resource. e know that pursuing a dual career requires increased productivity and more time to get things done. A study of nearly 20,000 employees conducted by Brigham Young University (BYU) says “Employees with unhealthy diets were 66 percent more likely to report having a loss in productivity.” Unfortunately, living in a commercialized world can also really make it a challenge to eat what is considered nutritious and healthy. And when you factor in not only a busy but hectic schedule, then it can be extremely challenging and almost impossible to find time to prepare nutritious meals. Fortunately, Mother Nature has come to the rescue with an abundance of healthy nutritious foods that can not only save us time but also transmute the stress of a heavy workload and hectic day into needed productivity and welldeserved prosperity. That same BYU study reported that “Employees who rarely eat fruits, vegetables and other low-fat foods at work were 93 percent more likely to have a higher loss in productivity.”

Wanda Russell and Tammy (See Dual Career Spotlight Articles) like others pursuing a dual career path are aware that the findings reported in the BYU study are fact. They both know that health is an essential contributor to productivity and a critical component to a successful ability to perform on the job and service clients. A HealthyBlog article says “Healthy eating is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, but most people are likely to think about healthy nutrition only in connection with either weight loss or health in general. Only very few will connect eating habits with productivity at work.”

Just like anyone working multiple jobs, Wanda and Tammy need readily available sources of more energy to make it through the day, as well as the patience to tackle any challenges and the focus to resolve issues that may arise.

According to Wanda, “if you manage your time right by eating more nutritiously energizing snacks during your day, you’ll discover the ability to be more productive and hopefully, have some additional time to prepare some great nutritious meals.”

ammy is a single mother of three young children with almost three years dual career experience as a Real Estate and Office Professional. She sat down with Dual Career Lifestyle magazine for an interview to offer some insight into why being a single mom and dual career professional is the ultimate juggling and balancing act.

Q: What are some of the reasons you chose to pursue a dual career?

A: There were two primary reasons why I chose to pursue a dual career; income and my children’s future. The cost of living in the Washington Metropolitan Area is steadily on the rise each year. I realized only one primary source of income wasn’t going to cover all my expenses in the long term, so I needed an additional income stream to keep up with growing cost of living. I also wanted to ensure my children were set up financially for the future and I couldn’t do this with only one primary financial source.

But above all of this, I adore witnessing the tremendous effect that my experience is having on my three young children. When I think about how much of a positive example this whole experience is demonstrating for them, it gives me a level of joy and satisfaction that is like no other. I am truly grateful to my creator for allowing me to have this experience and opportunity to be so much more; not just for myself but for the ones I love so much.

Q: How challenging is it being a dual career mom and how do you overcome this adversity?

A: First of all, the increased income is a plus and of course, something I enjoy but also being more active and engaged in building a financial future for my family. But parallel to this, the great feeling that comes from learning more about myself as well as becoming more knowledgeable in general and seeing the benefits of my sacrifices and accomplishments of my labor is something enjoy as well. Additionally, I like networking and building new relationships with so many great people as a real estate and office professional. It’s a pleasure to have an opportunity to be around and learn from knowledgeable people.

Q: How do you incorporate you duties as a mother into your dual career to get things done?

A: My children love to help out with my real estate business by putting together and passing out marketing materials. They’ve even made a competition out of who can pass out flyers the fastest and you this helps to save time.

Q: Do you think your experience as a dual career mom could inspire other single moms considering a dual career and what words of encouragement can you give them?

A: Yes, and that’s why I was very excited to do this interview. I want other single moms to know that if I can do it, then they can too. And I would want to end by telling them three things. Number one is to “Pour into your children first.” Number two is “Take time out for yourself when it matters the most.” And finally, number three is to “Eat the meat and spit out the bones” and this means you should take what’s for you and everything else can kick rocks.

And finally I try to maintain a personal/business schedule that intersects with my children’s schedule of activities. Fortunately, my real estate career offers flexibility because I am part of a partnership of agents and we help each other whenever possible. My other job as an office professional allows me to have a schedule that supports my family lifestyle. I also have a supportive family that helps out whenever possible. I mentioned homework so I’ll use that to give you an example to demonstrate all three of the ways I manage my time. Each of my children participates in after-school activities and sports. So we all frequently attend those events together and while waiting, we use that time to complete homework. I even use that time to check my emails, complete work on the computer and make client calls.

This way you will be self-motivated to get out of bed and jump right into the action. Remember, the careers you choose have to become part of your lifestyle so that they never feel like a normal job or something you’re being forced to do. Ask yourself, will you become bored doing the same routines possibly every day. And yes, there will be some challenging days. But when you realize those challenges are bringing out your best qualities, then you’ll look forward to them before they even arrive. The satisfaction of being able tackle every elephant that comes in the room will continuously add fuel to your fire to achieve a successful dual career. And yes, you will become tired of repetitious activity. But if you try to find improved ways of completing the activity, then you’ll begin to generate the necessary energy to make it through any given day. Accomplishing even one major goal to get you one step closer to another paycheck will become the motivation to get more done the next day. The great NFL coach Vince Lombardi said: “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” Soon you’ll notice this feeling of fulfillment that will be like finding gold and sometimes worth more than anything money can buy.

In closing, as a person with an array of talents, it only makes sense that Ben Franklin undoubtedly understood the real value of time. It’s clear Mr. Franklin was not one to be found wasting much time with such a vast list of accomplishments. He did, in fact, say “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” Ben also demonstrates that time management is an important component of self-discipline as well when he says “Lose no time. Be always employed in something useful. Cut off all unnecessary actions.” and he did just this by creating a daily routine schedule for himself. If we want to be successful in our dual career path, then Benjamin Franklin is a great role model that left plenty of advice and guidance for us to follow.


