EATING IN THE CITY

Asian Cuisine

With a huge range of Asian restaurants, it‘s hard to pinpoint our favourites. One of the best sushi restaurants is undoubtedly YABASE on Klosterstraße –the sushi quality is second to none. NAGOMI on Klosterstraße also offers highly authentic Japanese cuisine.

At NAGAYA, things are a little more unconventional: Yoshizumi Nagaya learned his trade from famous Japanese masters and is one of the few Japanese chefs to have earned a Michelin star with both Nagaya and his second restaurant, YOSHI. At least once a week we eat ramen soup in one of the now four TAKUMI restaurants in the Asian quarter.

At the colourful YAKI-THEEMON, you can enjoy treats from the teppan grill or “Donabe Gohan” in the stone pot. Last but not least, the Chinese restaurant HASHI in Flingern, which serves fantastic “Chinese fine dining”.

5P Style

Fichtenstraße in Flingern is known for the zakk or the adjoining Kiefernstraße with its brightly coloured houses stands for diversity, culture and art. A new eatery now completes the urban street style flair in the south of Flingern. Timo Schmitz, together with various graffiti artists, has brought the vibes of New York in the 70s and 80s to Düsseldorf and the premises of a former Italian restaurant. Culinary delights include street food from North and South America.

Special feature: the rehearsal rooms underneath the restaurant are used by music producers, musicians and DJs and they present their sets once a week.

All-Time Favourites

One of the best places to eat in town is a small “shack” at the former freight depot: BAR OLIO is an absolute clas sic in Düsseldorf‘s culinary landscape and the undisputed favourite restaurant of the THE DORF editorial team. The restaurant and bar at LIDO IM MALKASTEN feature an impressive carpet composition of 400 sqm espe cially designed by artist Rosemarie Trockel. Just as artful – as the rest of the interior – are the modern dishes with influences from all over the world. Creative cuisine without frills, modern, fresh and Scandinavian-inspired can be found at NØRDS, perhaps the city‘s most laid-back restaurant with a grand total of five tables. The French restaurant & bar of THE PARIS CLUB on the 16th and 17th floor of the 25hours Hotel scores with probably the grandest 360-degree view over the city and fantastic bistro cuisine. NOA is not only Murat Avcioglu‘s first restaurant, but also the name of his daughter. In an informal atmosphere, you can indulge in imaginative, cosmopolitan delicacies. On the menu: influences from the Orient, especially from Turkish cuisine, as well as Asian influences. Murat tries to grow as much as possible in his own garden –from beans and beetroot to carrots and various herbs.

The Cool Ones

Nick was born in Argentina, is a Canadian citizen and has been in Germany for 28 years. His partner is Korean. So it only makes sense to combine the diverse influences of their homelands in their own restaurant WAYA KITCHEN. Chicken poutine, flap steaks or veggie bowls are served in a cool interior – ac companied by a delicious glass of soju (Korean rice wine) and hip-hop music. At HITCHCOQ in Pempelfort, brothers Ben & Fabian serve “hot chicken“ in “Nashville” style and a great selection of craft beers as well as the in-house beer ALTfred. The burger joint WHAT‘S BEEF offers juicy burgers and the most unusual milkshakes in town, as well as lots of urban art (by Shepard Fairey, among others) on the red-tiled walls. Bangin‘ good food: try the fancy and super fresh Vietnam ese “Banh mis” and bowls in a hyper-cool interior at BANG ME.

The US-born, Düsseldorf-based musician Sorayah is just 16 years old. She describes her style as New Wave & Future RnB, which you can explore on her album BLANK. BLANK was released at the beginning of this year, is available on Spotify and sounds incredibly grown-up. You could assume Sorayah is already a veteran of the music industry. That‘s actually kind of true, because she‘s been making music all her life and started producing two years ago. Sorayah produced and mixed BLANK all by herself, and the next album is already in the starting blocks. We are looking forward to it.

I’m most looking forward to international musicians coming together and celebrating music.

Which place in Düsseldorf should visitors to the MTV Music Week definitely check out?

The whole city is beautiful, but if you want to get to know the culture in Düsseldorf, you should definitely visit Kiefernstraße.

Bars

BAR ELLINGTON on Scheurenstraße is definitely the classic among Düsseldorf’s bars. Robert Potthoff & team conjure up drinks of the highest quality here. Must-drink: the Gin Basil Smash. The MELODY BAR is a little jewel in the Altstadt and celebrates its 30th anniversary in March next year. Diagonally opposite, the ELEPHANT BAR with its cool 60s interior invites you to enjoy fine cocktails and a dance on Düsseldorf‘s smallest dance floor. A little more out-of-the-box is the SAKURA BAR on Immermannstraße: in the midst of the Japanese quarter, everything here revolves around sake in many different variations. Yuto Nagasawa serves “Japanese Style Cocktails“ and creations like “Pumpkin, Pumpkin“ with rum, vanilla ice, pumpkin & Earl Grey foam in his brand new bar HIDEAWAY.

Nothing beats a good coffee after a long night to kickstart the new day.

One of our favourite cafés is VELVET on Stresemannstraße. The deli has quickly become the top spot for the “cool kids in town“ and serves not only great coffee, but also fantastic breakfast and lunch. Top tip: the hangover breakfast including a sandwich with kimchi, melted cheese and a Bloody Mary. At PURE PASTRY on Carlsplatz, you can enjoy your coffee with a view of the hustle and bustle on the market square and a pistachio croissant from patissier Tim Tegtmeier. Another little insider tip is the microroastery LIGHTROAST COFFEE. On Saturdays and Sundays, Max sells his home-roasted coffee specialities and beans here in a backyard warehouse in Flingern.

In the late 1970s, Carmen Knöbel opened the RATINGER HOF club at number 10 of this famous street and thus one of the cradles of punk in Germany was born. New Wave bands frequented the scene‘s favourite hangout and served as a source of inspi ration for an entire generation. Students and professors from the nearby art academy were regulars. Iconic bands like Fehlfarben, DAF and Östro 430 started out here. Today, the “Kulturbanausen“, an association of local creatives and artists as well as art loving restaurateurs, want to keep the spirit of the “Hof“ alive and create a central cul tural hub in Düsseldorf. A few yards further on: the KREUZHERRENECKE with its distinctive window panes is a legendary liquor bar and has been a popular haunt for artists, students of the art academy, writers and all Düsseldorfers since the 1950s. Be sure to drink a “Salmiakki“! Joseph Beuys used to enjoy breakfast at OHME JUPP; at FÜCHSCHEN, one of Düsseldorf‘s five local breweries, Altbier is served on tap with a view of the colourful hustle and bustle of Ratinger Straße. Ratinger Straße is also a stop on the guided pop music tour “The Sound of Düsseldorf“.

Wine Bars

Come and relax with a glass of fine wine: the EISKELLERBAR right next to the art academy serves 250 different wines in its old brick vault – accompanied by excellent selections of ham and cheese. BAR CHERIE on Kurze Straße will win you over with its cosy, francophile lounge atmosphere & tarte flambée. The WYNO in the backyard of the private art collection Philara entices with a fantastic wine selection, artistic ambience and occa sional live music. The latest addition is the FETT wine bar in the Altstadt by restaurateur Walid El Sheikh: the exposed, bare brick walls ensure its carefully curated wine selection is served in a truly authentic urban atmosphere. Elvir is one of the most influential figures in German rap history. With his former label Selfmade Records and his current label Division, he has turned rappers like Kollegah, Casper or Rin into superstars and released more than 40 albums, two thirds of his artists have been awarded gold or platinum. Currently, Division is focusing on the exceptional German artist Schmyt, who will also come to Düsseldorf as part of MTV Music Week.

What do you personally associate with MTV?

In my childhood I always watched yo! mtv raps. One of my absolute highlights was seeing the MTV VMAs at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn in 2013.

Your all-time favourite music video?

This is super difficult, but I liked the simplicity of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana.

Your highlight of the local Düsseldorf music scene? Division Recordings, of course. :-)

What are you most looking forward to at MTV Music Week?

The performance of our artist Schmyt at the RobertSchumann-Saal on Sunday, 6 November.

Which place in Düsseldorf should visitors to the MTV Music Week definitely check out?

I recommend a walk along the Rhine promenade to all my guests.

Curiosities

Even Priscilla Presley once bought jewellery at the VASELINE STORE run by Rolf Buck and his partner Raffael. What began more than 20 years ago as a small second-hand shop for furniture and fashion in Düsseldorf‘s Wallstraße has now developed into a true creative empire. Store, styling, set construction – nothing is safe from Rolf‘s dazzling drive. In the store, you‘ll find accessories, furniture and decorations, but above all one thing: an abundance of kitsch. The Japanese shops on Immermannstraße are no less colourful. In the supermarkets you‘ll find a great selection of food and sweets from Japan. KYOTOJAPAN ART DECO has Japanese interior accessories and TAKAGIBOOKS & MORE the best mangas and books. Speaking of books, WALTHER KÖNIG at the Kunsthalle has probably the best selection of art, design, fashion, architecture and music books in town.

Pick Up

Off the beaten track but still very close to the big shopping mile Flinger Straße, a real Düsseldorf institution is hidden away in Kapuzinergasse. The cult shop PICK UP has been located in this small, cosy alley since 1978. It belongs to Düsseldorf like the Ratinger Hof, Die Toten Hosen and Altbier, and is the scene’s hangout for punks, mods and goths. This is where generations buy their Dr. Martens, second-hand clothes, buttons or studs. Heiner Hoppe, the owner at the time, was one of the first in Germany to import Dr. Martens shoes from England. Back then, he drove all the way to Northamptonshire, the centre of the English shoe industry, in an old Renault R4 to buy the red-hot goods. Even today, the elongated room still exudes the spirit of punk rock. Shoe boxes are piled high along the walls of the store. And the rest of the space is covered with old snaps of fa mous customers, crazy guests, wild parties and concerts. A true institution.

Concept Stores

Not far from the Kö, on the rather unassuming Stresemannstraße, BEYOND STUDIOS has become one of the shopping highlights in Düsseldorf in the last 3 years. The airy concept store intrigues with a large selection of purist women‘s fashion collections, plants, jewellery, books, cosmetics, interi or stuff, shoes and accessories. In the backyard, Sue M. Lee offers a fantastic selection of mainly German, French and Scandinavian designers & labels in her concept store STYLEALBUM. In spring 2020, designer Stephanie Hahn opened the new concept store LIVE LAB STUDIOS in Düsseldorf-Unterbilk. Here, products, stories and people from design, fashion, art, culture and cosmetics are presented in both analogue and digital space, emerging from a new kind of qualitative value. “Supernicethings“ is not only the motto of the AEST STORE in Flingern, but also the programme. At APROPOS, luxury labels such as Balenciaga, Saint Laurent or Off-White lure you in; JADES has been THE place in town for designer fashion since 2000, not only for Düsseldorfers but also for many international guests.

Sneakers

Düsseldorf‘s Japanese quarter has a lot to offer: Sushi, sake... sneakers! Since 2008, the AFEW STORE at Oststraße 36 completes the otherwise Asian-influenced district in a refreshing way. The store‘s repertoire includes shoes by adidas, Nike, Asics, Reebok, Puma & Co. – often rare pieces that are only available in limited editions or exclusively at Afew. Brand new: the in-house streetwear brand “Afew Goods“, which com bines streetwear and sustainability. SPACEWALK is another exciting new store in the Sevens shopping centre on the Kö. The new sneaker store attracts customers with the purchase and sale of rare high-end sneakers, streetwear and selected accessories.

SNEAKERS UNPLUGGED in Flingern offers only sustainably produced sneakers from brands like Clae and Veja.

fem_pop is a feminist promoter collective that has been organising concerts with FLINTA* (female, lesbian, inter, non-binary, trans, agender) acts for almost four years. Fem_pop advocates a music industry beyond male dominance – tackling every aspect of the music industry, not just what’s seen on stage. For their empowering commitment, the collective was awarded the Youth Democracy Prize of the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) in 2020 and was nominated for the German Commitment Prize in 2021. We talk to Meike Glass, one of the four founders.

What do you personally associate with MTV?

In my childhood and youth, MTV was only available at my grandmother’s party cellar on a relatively old tube TV. I spent many afternoons down there, watching music programmes but especially the epic MTV reality shows. The fact that I was a bit disillusioned on my 16th birthday because neither Kakkmaddafakka nor the Kings of Convenience had time to serenade me – was due in no small part to MTV and “My Super Sweet 16”.

Your all-time favourite music video?

All-time favourite is a pretty high bar, but one video that keeps popping into my head even a few years after its release is “Borders” by M.I.A. – unfortunately also because it’s still more than up-to-date.

Your highlight of the local Düsseldorf music scene? The musician Tice (instagram.com/ticesound) and the Get Over It Collective (instagram.com/getoverit_collective).

What are you most looking forward to at MTV Music Week?

Pongo’s show on 8 November at the zakk. It will be an energetic and sweaty dance counterpart to the November cold, I promise! After all, Pongo is often referred to as the Queen of Kuduro – so if you have not heard of her yet, you should definitely take the chance to get to know her now.

Which place in Düsseldorf should visitors to the MTV Music Week definitely check out?

The Pongo concert, of course. And otherwise: the record stores Hitsville Records & A&O Medien, so you can take even more good music home.

GUIDED WALK: THE SOUND OF DÜSSELDORF

Influential and successful pop music has always been created in Düsseldorf. Musicians, artists and other creative minds have been meeting, forming bands and influencing each other in the Altstadt for 50 years. Where are the roots of the electronic pioneers of Kraftwerk, where did Die Toten Hosen learn their punk ABC – and which DJs are spinning at the world-famous Salon des Amateurs these days? The pop music tour “The Sound of Düsseldorf” shows legendary clubs and pubs. The guides, Dr Michael Wenzel and Sven-André Dreyer, are local music journalists who published the standard work “Keine Atempause – Musik aus Düsseldorf“.

Dreischeibenhaus

The eponymous three discs of the futuristic steel skeleton building stand for slabs, cast and rolled blocks of steel from which new things are created. In the course of the economic miracle, the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia becomes one of the strongholds for innovative art and music: young bands like NEU! and Kraftwerk rethink everything and lay the foundation for the musical future. It’s no wonder that the band La Düsseldorf 1976 had themselves photographed at this future location for the cover of their groundbreaking album “Düsseldorf”.

Schadowstraße

In the 1970s, the record shop “Rock On“ sells hot stuff: the first punk rock records from overseas make the rounds. The band MALE rehearses in the basement of the vinyl mecca and is later to release the first German punk record “Zensur & Zensur”. A schoolboy from Mettmann, Andreas “Campino” Frege – a loyal fan of the band to this day – is an onlooker in the rehearsal room.

Kurze Straße

The career of the band Broilers seems like a punk rock fairytale: starting in Düsseldorf, the underground band played its way across Germany. The hard road has paid off: today they are at home on the big stages and have redefined punk rock.

Like many young Düsseldorfers, the Broilers were socialised with rock’n’roll in the pubs and clubs of Kurze Straße.

Neubrückstraße

With the “Creamcheese” in the 1960s, the artist group ZERO creates an unprec edented meeting place for the art and party scene. Musical heroes like Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk do the honours, as does a previously unknown singer/actor named Marius Müller-Westernhagen.

Bolker Straße

In the midst of tourist traps, Henry Storch held up the flag of pop culture with the Unique Club until the mid-2000s: seven days of music without genre boundaries. With Wednesday Breaks, Düsseldorf became the epicentre of the German drum’n’bass scene.

Schneider-Wibbel-Gasse

Die Toten Hosen are a band with close ties to their hometown of Düsseldorf. This is also evident on 13 May 2012, when the band transforms the flat of their fan Ingo Forsthofer into a punk rock club for a home concert as part of their Magical Mystery Tour. “An Tagen wie diesen“ – the whole street celebrates with them.

THE SOUND OF DÜSSELDORF AS PART OF MTV MUSIC WEEK 5 & 12 November at 11 am. and 3 pm. | Duration: approx. 2.5 hours | Cost: 16 Euros Bookings at: WWW.THE-SOUND-OF-DUESSELDORF.DE

Many more stories from Düsseldorf‘s musical history can be discovered at the other stops of the guided walk: Königsallee, U-Bahn-Haltestelle Heinrich-Heine-Allee, Bolker Stern, Grabbeplatz, Ratinger Straße, Flinger Straße & Berger Allee/Rheinufer.

250 Years of Kunstakademie Düsseldorf

Congratulations – in 2023 the Düsseldorf Art Academy celebrates its 250th anniversary. The walls of the distinguished neo-Renaissance building at Eiskellerstraße 1 in Düssel dorf‘s old town have probably seen a lot in 250 years: with the Düsseldorf School of Painting, it succeeded in the 19th century in becoming an internationally renowned art academy; in the 1990s, the Düsseldorf School of Artistic Photography by Bernd and Hilla Becher and their students, such as Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, Thomas Ruff, Jörg Sasse and Thomas Struth, also gained international attention. Not forgetting Joseph Beuys, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, Gerhard Richter and Günther Uecker, who initiated spectacular actions and discourses with ideas and movements such as German Pop, ZERO and Fluxus, with the expanded concept of art and the concept of social sculpture. Today, the biannual “Rundgang“, the viewings of the students‘ final works are a highlight in the Düsseldorf art calendar. kunstakademie-duesseldorf.de

Exhibitions

Urban Art

Urban Art artists combine classical art movements with Pop, Punk, Contemporary Art, Graffiti and Street Art –Klaus Rosskothen presents international artists from the Urban Art, Contemporary Art and Street Art scene with his gallery PRETTY PORTAL. The TAKE A BUTCHER’S Gallery in Flingern, which is a little younger, also shows a colourful selection of international protagonists of the scene. For those who want to see street art live and not in a gallery, we recommend a visit to Kiefernstraße. Once known for its left-wing alternative squatter scene, the brightly coloured houses have already achieved cult status today. Street art live and in colour can also be found under Jülicher Brücke, where the 40 Grad Urban Art Festival took place in 2019 and still features murals by many different street and graffiti artists on an area of 2,000 sqm here.

In addition to the large number of galleries and museums, Düsseldorf has numerous venues owned by private art collectors who make their art accessible to the public. First and foremost is the JULIA STOSCHEK FOUNDATION in Oberkassel. Julia Stoschek is one of the most important collectors of video art, and her collection is one of the world‘s largest private collections of contemporary art. The gaming exhibition “Worldbuilding“ can be seen until December 2023 and is highly recom mended. The SAMMLUNG PHILARA in the backyard on the Birkenstraße gallery circuit is a private collection of contemporary art and includes over 1,700 works of various genres such as painting, sculpture, installation, photography and works on paper. Gil Bronner began building his collection in the mid-1990s. Currently, it is show ing a new, comprehensive collection presentation with “Breathing Water, Drinking Air.“ The LANGEN FOUN DATION exhibition house in Neuss is located on a former NATO base in the midst of the Lower Rhine landscape. For this site, the collector Karl-Heinrich Müller developed a visionary project from 1994 onwards, in which art and nature were to be brought together in a unique synthesis. The impressive exhibition “Julian Charrière – Controlled Burn“ can be seen until August 23.

A must-see is the exhibition WONDERWALLS. ART & TOYS at the NRW-Forum. The exhibition features over 3,000 objects, including works by Shepard Fairy, Banksy, Kaws, Be@rbricks and many more. All the works come from the collection of Düsseldorf-based Selim Varol, who has been collecting for over 30 years and has amassed what is probably one of the most extensive collections of urban art and design er toys in Europe with more than 10,000 works. Also worth seeing is the exhibition CHRISTO & JEANNE CLAUDE. PARIS. NEW YORK. GRENZENLOS. at the Kunstpalast. The exhibition traces the art-historical development of Christo & Jeanne Claude from the mid-1950s to the present day. Since the end of October, the KUNSTSAMMLUNG NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN presents Piet Mondrian‘s path from the early naturalistic paintings to the late abstract works. Almost a classic: the installation “in orbit“ by the Spanish artist TOMÁS SARACENO hovers 25 metres above the piazza in the Kunstsammlung NRW and is a walk-in construction made of transparent steel nets.

“What I like about playing drums is that you are responsible for keeping the whole band in the right tempo and rhythm.“ Dr. Stephan Keller is not only the Lord Mayor of the state capital Düsseldorf, but has a passion for music as well. He was already fascinated by playing the drums at a young age and took lessons for many years. This led him to play in various ensembles across all musical genres, from a big band to a jazz quartet. So, his patronage of MTV Music Week is a truly perfect match!

What do you personally associate with MTV?

I was a teenager when MTV was launched in Germany. At that time you could only get the channel via cable, but we didn’t have that at my parents’ house in Aachen. Nevertheless, MTV had a huge presence, the big “M” was practically everywhere. And in the big electronic shops you could watch it a bit.

Your all-time favourite music video?

That’s difficult, but there were really a lot of good clips that everyone talked about. I still remember that George Michael features only marginally in his video for “Too Funky” and instead international top models were shown in outfits by Thierry Mugler. Or how Michael and Janet Jackson appeared together in “Scream”. With insanely expensive 3D effects. And then there were also videos that were shot on the cheap. For example, Fatboy Slim filmed “Praise you” simply with a video camera.

Your highlight of the local Düsseldorf music scene?

Düsseldorf is an extremely musical city and home to several internationally successful artists and labels, some of which have revolutionised the music market. Kraftwerk are considered pioneers of electronic music. Die Toten Hosen celebrated their 40th band anniversary this year and with their anthem “An Tagen wie diesen” (“On Days Like These”) erected a musical monument to the old town, the river Rhine and the funfair. In Dieter Falk we have a composer who has won many awards and who has made a name for himself not least through his productions for PUR. DJs like Loco Dice, who played at La Rocca on Grünstraße, is now booked internationally. “Hip Teens don’t wear blue jeans” by the Frank Popp Ensemble became a radio hit in the early 2000s. We organise the Jazz Rally, have a first-class symphony orchestra and, with our city subsidiary D.LIVE, an organiser who brings world stars to the Rhine, such as Depeche Mode at the very moment. In addition, the Clara Schumann Music School has been successfully training young musicians for more than 65 years.

What are you most looking forward to at MTV Music Week?

MTV Music Week emphasises the international appeal of our state capital. Back in 2011, we were honoured to host the Eurovision Song Contest here. Just recently Lady Gaga celebrated the start of her European tour in Düsseldorf and Rammstein played in front of a sold-out stadium. I am therefore very pleased that Düsseldorf can now once again prove that it is an excellent host. To be able to welcome artists and visitors from all over the world to Düsseldorf fills me with pride. I wish everyone involved in MTV Music Week an unforgettable time here in our city on the Rhine.

Which place in Düsseldorf should visitors to the MTV Music Week definitely check out?

Düsseldorf’s art scene is also well known beyond the city’s limits. Many of the MTV Music Week events take place right next to our most important museums, such as the Kunstpalast or the NRW-Forum, making it all the more convenient to pay them a visit, too. We Düsseldorfers are hospitable. I also recommend a trip to a brewery to all visitors. Enjoy an Altbier with old and new friends alike!

MUSICCITY Salon des Amateurs

The SALON DES AMATEURS, located in the former canteen of the Kunstverein, is an artists‘ café and nightclub and a hotspot for the local scene. Com poser Volker “Hauschka“ Bertelmann launched the renowned Approxima tion Festival for contemporary music here. The band Stabil Elite was raised musically here and made music history as “Kraftwerk‘s grandchildren“. The unique and innovative sound of the Salon continues to travel around the world thanks to DJs such as Lena Willikens, Vladimir Ivkovic and Tolouse Low Trax. Grabbeplatz & the Salon des Amateurs are stops on the pop music tour “The Sound of Düsseldorf“.

Paradise Now

Welcome to paradise! PARADISE

NOW is a restaurant, bistro, bar & club and the new hot spot in Düsseldorf‘s Medienhafen. Once in paradise, you quickly forget the world around you. Diners are seated in a hyper-cool, laid-back interior with an elegant Mediterranean touch under palm trees. The pared-down menu includes the best of “Coast 2 Coast“, with changing DJs serving up breezy tropical vibes and Latin funk. After dinner, fine drinks are served at the long bar with surf videos in view. The party continues in the club, which has already been the backdrop for various film shoots. Enjoy the ride!

The excitement is palpable when you think about your next visit to the record shop. Few things are as intoxicating for an avid collector than rummaging through masses of vinyl, discovering new things or holding old classics languidly in your hand. And then finally: headphones on, the needle’s hitting the vinyl and you hear the first, slightly scratchy beats of your chosen record – a simply indescribable sensation. The traders we trust: HITSVILLE on Wallstraße has been a true institution in Düsseldorf for over 25 years. While the playlist at Ralf Brendgen‘s Hitsville is a wild mix of pop, hip hop, punk and electro, things are a little different at Marc Taake‘s BEAT RETREAT. He has got everything relating to soul, hip-hop, Brazil/Latin/Afro and dub. A&O MEDIEN in the shopping centre Schadow-Arkaden offers anything music-related – including CDs and music books as well as records.

RAINKING is a more rock-oriented place – in addition to a large selec tion of new records, you‘ll also find many 2nd-hand treasures here.

Time to Sing

Let‘s sing: the fact that Düsseldorf has an unmistakable Asian influence can also be seen in the number of its karaoke bars. At the karaoke bar MUZE.KTV on Klosterstraße, people sing in beautifully trashy lit individual booths. Those who are not so shy can show off their singing skills on the big stage at GILSON. A small but classy place is the UPPER LOFT BAR: in the charming wine and cocktail bar you can sing karaoke in the back – or not. The K1 CLUB & BAR is open for karaoke from 10 pm to 4 am on Fridays.

Julia Stoschek is one of the most important collectors of video art; her JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION is one of the world‘s largest private collections of timebased art. This year it celebrated its 15th anniversary –since 2007 the artworks of the artists represented in the collection have been presented to the public in solo and group exhibitions in the JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION in Düsseldorf (JSC Düsseldorf). Julia Stoschek says: “The moving image thrives on fleetingness – one of the defining characteristics of our present. That is one of the reasons why my main focus is on time-based art and equally on performance, understood as a time-based medium.“

JULIA STOSCHEK

Collector of time-based media art and founder of the Julia Stoschek Collection

What do you personally associate with MTV?

I grew up in Coburg – MTV was the gateway to the world for me! At the beginning, MTV almost represented an art form of its own within the TV landscape – with novel formats, fast cuts and elaborately produced music videos. The channel was instrumental in establishing a global pop culture and definitely shaped my passion for time-based media art!

Your all-time favourite music video?

“Take on Me” by A-ha! And then of course Björk! Björk’s music video “Wanderlust” is part of my art collection –you accompany the singer in a 3-D animated ride on a yak through Icelandic nature. Absolutely magical.

Your highlight of the local Düsseldorf music scene?

Kraftwerk, of course! Founded in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider in Düsseldorf, the band did pioneering work in the field of electropop and is one of the most influential music groups of our time.

What are you most looking forward to at MTV Music Week?

I’m looking forward to great concerts, discovering newcomers and, above all, lots of international visitors in Düsseldorf.

Which place in Düsseldorf should visitors to the MTV Music Week definitely check out?

My collection in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel! We are currently showing the exhibition WORLDBUILDING – Gaming and Art in the Digital Age, including an interactive work by digital pioneer Rebecca Allen, who created the 3D animations for Kraftwerk’s legendary music video “Musique Non Stop” in the 1980s.

MTV Music Week presents free:pop 3.30 pm (talks) | 7 pm (concert) | @ Tonhalle

With its new platform free:pop, the New Fall Festival will celebrate its 10th birthday on 5 November 2022 in the Tonhalle Düsseldorf with a day of bands and solo acts beyond common gender stereotypes. The aim is to provide a platform for education on gender equality (panel talks), strong voices (open mic) and good music from female and non-binary acts. In addition to stage panels with the free:pop:talk (admission from 3.30 pm), visitors can look forward to a concert with Alice Merton, Mikey and other great artists from 7 pm! In cooperation with “Sipgate“ and MTV Music Week, free:pop is turning up the heat: Brave, strong, loud and diverse for empowerment and more visibility.

The videos in the archive of the Düsseldorf Inter Media Art Institute (IMAI) provide deep insights into the genesis of the music video. Perspectives from contemporary art, independent music and political activism impressively show how the genre developed and consolidated in the course of the 1980s from concert documentaries, band demos, documentary portraits and artistic experiments. The video programme “Flowers from the Under ground“ brings this history to life and also creates sensitivity for possible alternative histories. Which music videos are forgotten today? What has been lost from the music video format in recent decades? How did artists and musicians of the 1980s imagine the future of the music video? The title of the programme is borrowed from the video compilation “Morgana – Flowers from the Underground“, which was released in 1985 by Kartell Musik and distributed throughout Germany on VHS. The exhibition runs until 5 February in the video lounge of the IMAI Foundation – Inter Media Art Institute in the NRW-Forum. The opening hours are the same as those of the Wonderwalls exhibition at the NRW-Forum from 11 am to 6 pm; on 5 & 6 November and 10 November these are extended until 8 pm.

No less than two musical highlights will be stopping at the zakk as part of MTV Music Week. On Saturday, 5 November, MONTREAL will kick things off. Yonas, Hirsch and Max Power founded the band in Hamburg in 2003, and their first album “Alles auf schwarz“ was released two years later. Since then, more than 800 concerts in 19 countries have followed, among others with the Bloodhound Gang, Madsen, Slime, Royal Republic and Ignite. The band‘s most recent album, “Hier und heute nicht“, was released in 2019, reached #14, its highest chart position, and the accompanying tour, which was sold out almost everywhere, proved that MONTREAL has indeed stumbled into the next level.

As part of their “Bei Aller Liebe Tour 2022“, Muff Potter will stop at the zakk on 10 November 22. After the band‘s break-up in 2009, the surpris ingly announced reunion tour at the beginning of 2019 is a success that neither the fans nor the band members themselves could have imagined: All concerts sold out, some moved to bigger venues, sold out again. During the nine years of their non-existence, Muff Potter matured into a reference in the punk and indie scene that many younger bands refer to today. The show starts at 8 pm.

MTV Music Week presents Paradise now!

@ Johanneskirche

The “Düsseldorf Festival“ has been pioneering cross-genre productions since its inception. Based on his picture book “Adam and Eve“, jack-of-alltrades Martin Baltscheit has written a libretto that tells the creation story as an exciting adventure between childhood and adulthood. Wolfgang Abendroth has composed catchy, vital and rousing music that makes Adam and Eve and the animals and plants in the Garden of Paradise sing and, above all, dance. The visionary Düsseldorf choreographer and director Takao Baba catapults the biblical story into the topicality of a fast-paced urban dance performance. The optimistic message: Paradise is not lost! We can create it ourselves in the here and now. With gripping music and lots of positive energy, “Paradise now!“ is a musical that appeals to all generations. Participants include the Academy for Choir and Music Theatre at the Johanneskirche and the youth company of the tanzhaus nrw.
