The finalists meet perfectly their breed’s standards. The 4th place was for a beautiful Poodle Toy female, well constructed and with excellent grooming. Sadly this lady was tired and didn’t develop her total potential in the ring.

The 3rd place was for a stunning Bullmastiff female with excellent movement and structure. This female is a very beautiful example of her breed. The 2nd Place was for a magnificent Australian Shepherd. This exemplar shows a perfect structure, a wonderful natural pose and a move like the wind… really good dog!

Finally, the first place was conquered by the Akita. A really perfect female… well balanced, well constructed and excellent showed. In fact anyone of these four dogs can be a BIS winner. Their breeders, owners and handlers must be proud of them.

Your opinion on the BIS line-up
Under my point of view, seven dogs meet all the necessary qualities to be at the winner’s podium. But, we can choose only four. What did you think of the quality of the dogs in general?
As in any other country some breeds were well represented and others need to be improved. I encourage everybody to improve each day. Mainly to the breeders, who are the master pieces of our “dog world”. Knowledge, honesty, objectivity and consistency must be the base of our breeding programs. Rottweiler ÂŤversusÂť Dobermann Rottweilers and Dobermanns are two of the most popular and loved breeds in the world. What is it, though, that makes them so special? They may both be considered as very aggressive dogs, however, they generally become loyal companions, reliable working dogs and amazing friends of the whole family. History reveals that Rottweilers are considered by many as one of the first working breeds. It was believed that they helped the Romans to conquer Gutenberg, where they were used as
guards for the prisoners of the war, as well as guides for cows and sheep. The Romans were located around the productive areas of Rottweil, where the native farmers saw a reliable working animal in the breed. Gifted breeders developed dogs who were completely reliable to guide their sheep. It is almost certain that the name of the breed comes from that town. Apart from guiding The Dog Planet Magazine 69

sheep, the Rottweilers have been in pulling milk carriages (the same way Bernese Mountain dogs were used) and since they proved to be excellent guards, they were often used as money carriers for banks by adjusting a little purse to their collars. Rottweilers are also known as butcher dogs and have been used in police duties and by the Security Police in many countries. This is not a breed that everybody can have and specialists believe that one should obtain a lot of experience with dogs before deciding on a Rottweiler. A perfectly trained Rottweiler is a very impressive dog. It respects its owner but needs to be strictly treated. An adult dog of the breed (especially males) has incredible stamina and character. For those that are used in attack and defence duties, it is said that more time is spent in stopping them from attacking rather than teaching them the right way to attack. The most important part of their training is basic obedience (and not only for Rottweilers but for all dogs). Rottweilers are a somewhat independent breed. Both sexes are affectionate, with the females a little more, while males tend to be more protective of those they are familiar with. They are self confident and are sure of their capabilities, they are fearless but they should also have a balanced temperament and a good sense of humour which should be distinct at any given time. Rotweilers are big dogs, with males reaching even 68 cm and females between 56 and 63cm. Generally, their 70 The Dog Planet Magazine
appearance should be the one of a strong dog capable of showing great strength and stamina. Their eyes should be almond-shaped, medium sized and dark brown in colour. When staring directly into their eyes, one should see calmness and a sense of humour. Dogs with light brown eyes are considered faulty, as it gives the dog a bad expression. The tail is usually carried horizontally but a bit higher when in movement. The colour of the breed is black with a few distinctive red marks. The marks could be from bright red to mahogany and white marks are not allowed. The coat is double and the absolutely necessary undercoat should exist on the neck and the thighs. Today’s Dobermann comes from many years of research and breeding of fans of the breed who worked really hard for its stabilisation. The breed today has many modern elements, it contains, though a few interesting historical elements, as well. Lewis Dobermann, the person who gave his name to the breed, was working for the local dog pound. He was also a tax-collector and buyer of horses that were due to be slaughtered. dog with the help of two of his friends. Unfortunately, there’s no record of the breeds that were used to make the final breed. It is believed that many shepherd dogs were used, maybe Rottweilers, as well as Terriers. An English terrier, called Manchester played an important role in the making of the breed and indeed those terriers are sometimes called ‘little Dobermanns’. Some European hounds may also have been used like the Vaimaraners and the Viszlas. Some believe the Great Dane and the Greyhound took some part in the development of the breed. though, the honour for the creation of the breed should be given to Lewis Dobermann, it was 5 years after his death, on 1894, that the breed was named Dobermann Pincher. Dobermanns are considered to be gracious, elegant, clever, loyal and protective. Basically, Dobermans are working dogs. They are bred for guarding and they will passionately protect their owners. He is an excellent worker and needs space to move. He dislikes small and narrow areas. Because of his short hair he has great difficulty with cold weather and with dramatic climate changes. bed in the winter. They should live within the house. After all, they can be amazing family dogs and play happily with kids. They should, of course, be house-trained and spend a lot of time in basic obedience training. An adult Dobermann that hasn’t been trained will definitely cause problems with his behaviour. Dobermanns are big dogs with the males reaching 72 cm and the females not above 68cm.The colours are black and brown with distinct red markings. White is highly undesirable. The tail is traditionally docked between the first or second vertebra, unless it is prohibited by the country.
The clubs of both breeds should always be willing to give advice to everyone interested in getting a puppy. A puppy is not allowed to leave its mother until the age of 8 weeks. If someone offers you a younger puppy then be advised: he is only interested in profit. The puppy should be lively with bright eyes and a clean coat. In any case, you should think it through before deciding to get a Rottweiler or a Dobermann and also talk to owners and breeders to make sure that either of these breeds suits you and that the way you live will indeed make your dog happy. Both breeds suffer from Hip Dysplasia and they should be tested for it. You
should make sure your puppy comes from a series of ancestors, parents included, that have been tested for the disease. You should ask the breeder for the HD certificate of the parents. A good breeder is always keen to help new owners with advice, as well as, take the puppy back for whatever reason. If in doubt for anything you can always turn to the club of the breed or the Kennel Club of the country. In any case, if you got your puppy from a trustworthy breeder and you can rely on his helping you, focus on your new baby and relax: with a Rottweiler or a Dobermann your life will be whole and…safe!
