Roses are Read featuring G. Mike Shoup‌ G. Mike Shoup has always had an interest in plants. With this in mind, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Trinity University and his Master’s degree in Horticulture from Texas A & M University. In 1976, a year after graduation he started Containerized Plants, Inc. which grew and sold woody plants and hardy, old-fashioned perennials, Texas natives and most importantly - neglected Old Garden Roses. His work has been recognized in Smithsonian and National Geographic magazines and in many trade journals as well. His hope that the beauty seen in these gardens will create resurgence in the preservation of these rare and beautiful roses. Mike is a past president of the board of directors of the Heritage Rose Foundation, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Old Garden Roses. He has also written many articles and supplied numerous photographs for trade magazines and national periodicals on the subject of using Old Garden Roses in today’s gardens. The Yellow Rose of Texas‌ Lora-Marie Bernard is an award-winning Texas journalist and author whose books focus on great Lone Star stories sifted through a modern lens. She earned her undergraduate degree in journalism at the Mayborn School of Journalism at the University of North Texas. She earned her master's degree in extension studies at Harvard University, where she studied journalism and museum studies.

The legend of the Yellow Rose of Texas holds an indisputable place in Lone Star culture, tethered to a familiar song that has served as a Civil War marching tune, a pop chart staple and a halftime anthem. Almost two centuries of Texas mythmaking successfully muddled fact with fable in song. The true story of Emily D. West remains mired in dispute and unrecognizable beneath the manipulative tales that grew up around it. The complete truth may never be recovered, but author Lora-Marie Bernard seeks an honest account honoring the grit and determination that brought a free black woman from the abolitionist riots of Connecticut to the thick of a bloody Texas revolution. A Lone Star native who grew up immersed in the Yellow Rose legend, Bernard also traces other stories that legend has obscured, including the connection between Emily D. West and plans for a free black colony in Texas.
