When she received news from her doctor that she was pregnant at eighteen, Monique did not let it stop her from pursuing her goals. When she received a breast cancer diagnosis, she stood firm on her faith that she’d be well, and she was victorious! Her journey has not been easy, however. She experienced many challenges that impact single mothers. After experiencing heart pain that came with being a parent of an incarcerated teen, Monique founded a nonprofit organization that used performing arts to wake up the genius and gems inside of young people.
Shaquita Norris is living with Sickle Cell Anemia and lived with this disorder for 34 years and counting. She is a single mom of one. Shaquita is the Ceo of a non profit organization called A Better Life for the Sicklee. I started writing to show awareness to different disorders an their symptoms in hopes of educating someone that going through similar situations. I also work closing with those who are homeless in the community with a hereditary disorder.
Omar Scott, originally from Los Angeles, his family moved to Dallas where he graduated from Justin F. Kimball high school. He attended college at El Centro and Mountain View college where he majored in creative writing. Inspired by his favorite writers, Carl Weber, Sistah Soulja, and Eric Jerome Dickey, he went on to start writing urban fiction. He published his first work, Troubled Waters, on Timbooktu.com in 2008. The goal of this festival is to advocate, promote, and celebrate literary arts and literacy and bring community awareness to issues concerning our youth, health, environment, and economy as well as support for our social responsibility for building reading skills and transforming lives.
Literary SoulFEST is a creative and innovative approach to promote literacy based on the National Literacy Act of 1991 definition of literacy: "an individual's ability to read, write and speak in English and compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job and in society to achieve one's goals and develop one's knowledge and potential " Literary SoulFEST brings together the novice reader, authors, publishers, poets, writers, artists, book clubs, avid readers, scholars, families, students, educators, aspiring actors/actresses, organizations, churches and businesses. From this collective energy, we hope to cultivate new readers and enlighten seasoned readers in the surrounding communities. This event was founded by Donya Craddock, Donna Craddock and Dominique Johnson, Mama Gregory owners of The Dock Bookshop.
