Compiled by EVAN MORGAN & CHRIS SHIM Dartmouth enjoyed a successful weekend on the water across the Northeast highlighted by a win over an 18team field at the St. Mary’s Fall Interconference. Dartmouth finished outside the top 10 just three times and earned a convincing 20-point win.

At Roger Williams’ Amanda Trophy, a northerly breeze was enough for 13 races and 11 top-10 finishes for the Big Green, who ended the regatta

in second.

Another Dartmouth contingent traveled to Tufts University for the Professor Stedman Hood Trophy, where the wind cooperated enough for 10 races. Dartmouth took 11th place among 20 teams.

At the University of New Hampshire’s Chris Loder Trophy, the teams could only complete three races, one short of the four required for an official regatta.

The rugby team walloped the United States Military Academy 45-7 at Brophy Field on Saturday. Freshmen took care of most of the scoring, as Idia Ihensekhien ’21 punched in two tries and Lilly Durbin ’21 torched Army for five more.

Facing a Dartmouth side with aggressive tackling and a generous helping of line speed, Army was unable to string together many long

offensive sequences. The Black Knights scored their only try on an interception in the 52nd minute.

VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team lost to Harvard University 3-1 (12-25, 25-19, 23-25, 20-25) in its Ivy League opener on Friday night.

With the loss, the Big Green fell to 4-6 on the season and 0-1 in the conference. Olympia Nagel-Caland ’21 finished with 12 kills on the day, while Tori Dozier ’20 had 35 assists.

Lauren Douglas ’21 led the team with 19 digs.

The Crimson got off to a strong start in the first set and ran away with it, holding the Big Green to a .138 hitting percentage.

The second set was a different story.

Dartmouth won the first point and held the lead

for most of the way. Harvard tied the second set at 19 apiece, but three kills by captain Sara Lindquist ’18 gave the Big Green the second set win.

With the third set tied at 22-22, Harvard took a two-point lead, but Lindquist kept the Big Green in the game with a tip to bring the score to 24-23. However, the Crimson was able to pull out the third set win with a kill.

After falling behind early in the fourth set, Dartmouth tried to close the gap but could not fully get back, as Harvard then took the fourth set 25-20.

Cross country The Big Green men’s and women’s cross country teams took on a host of some of the top cross country programs in the country Friday afternoon at Boston College’s Coast-to-Coast Invitational at Franklin Park. The women’s team finished fourth in the 22-team field with 132 team points, while the men’s team finished ninth with 247 points.

Olivia Lantz ’19 built on her win at the Maribel Sanchez Souther Invitational with a 10th place finish, finishing the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 30 seconds. Right behind her was firstyear Ella Ketchum ’21, 15th in 17:35. Rounding out the scoring runners for the Big Green was the trio of Bridget O’Neill ’18 in 31st (17:57), Bridget Flynn ’18 in 37th (18:03) and Leigh Moffett ’18

in 39th (18:06). Abby Livingston ’18 and Lily Anderson ’19 were the sixth and seventh runners for the Big Green, with Livingston in 44th with a time of 18:12 and Anderson in 48th with 18:14.

The top five finishers of the men’s team finished with a 16-second spread between them. Leading the way was Pat Gregory ’18, who completed the 8km course in 25:13 for 40th place. Close behind were Sander Kushen ’19 in 49th (25:24), Will Shafer ’18 in 52nd (25:24), Miles Irish ’18 in 55th (25:28) and Sean Laverty ’ 20 in 56th (25:29).

Rounding out the top seven were Ben Szuhaj ’19 in 60th (25:33) and Quinn Cooney ’19 in 63rd (25:36).

Providence College won the women’s race while Syracuse University won the men’s race.

GOLF

Field Hockey No. 17 Princeton University shut out Dartmouth 5-0 on Saturday at Chase Field. The Princeton attack was relentless, outshooting Dartmouth 32-3 and earning 17 penalty corners to the Big Green’s two. Hailey Valerio ’19 saved eight shots from the Tigers

but let in five, three in the first half and a pair in the second half.

Katie Spanos ’20, Evie Bird ’19 and Morgan Philie ’18 each recorded one shot in the loss. Dartmouth has not won its Ivy League opener since 2011.

At the Dartmouth Invitational, the opening tournament of the season and the only home tournament of the fall and spring, the women’s golf team held on to third place in a field of 11 teams.

Jessica Kittelberger ’18 shot a three-over-par (147) to pace the Green and White with Maddie Nelson ’20 three shots behind. Moon Cheong ’21 was a shot behind Nelson and Isabelle Kane ’18 rounded out the scoring with a 13-over-par effort. Led by Kittelberger’s one-under 71, the Big Green shot 300 as a team on Saturday. The team carded a 304 the following day, good enough to edge Boston University by one shot.

Catherine Roddy ’19 played as an individual, finishing the two-day tournament tied for fifth overall.

Men’s golf took eighth out of 14 teams at the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge hosted at the par-72 Highland Golf Course in White River Junction. The Big Green finished the weekend 23-over-par as a team. Cornell University, Harvard University and Princeton University all finished ahead of Dartmouth on the leaderboard, with Princeton’s six-under-par effort good for second place.

Ian Kelsey ’18 and James Turner ’21 were both three-over-par on the weekend to tie for 15th. Turner finished the first day in fourth with a score of 71.

Sam Ohno ’21 (+6) and Will Bednarz ’20 (+11) were the other two Dartmouth representatives. The Big Green carded 296 as a team on the first day and fell one place in the standings with a 303 on Sunday.

TENNIS Co-captain Kristina Mathis ’18 traveled to Malibu, California to participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Oracle Masters from Thursday to Saturday.

Mathis is one of 32 collegiate women’s tennis players who were invited to the tournament.

She competed in both the singles and doubles at the national event hosted by Pepperdine University and the Malibu Racquet Club. Mathis fell in the first round to the University of Oklahoma’s Lily Miyazaki 6-2, 6-4. This loss placed her in the consolation singles bracket, where she defeated Michelle Lui of Seattle University 6-3, 6-2. On Saturday, Mathis played Northern Kentucky University’s Margita Sunjic and won 6-0, 6-4.

SOCCER

On Sunday, after losing the first set, Mathis came back to defeat the University of Denver’s Julia O’Loughlin 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2. In mixed doubles, Mathis and Columbia University’s Victor Pham advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Baylor University’s Johannes Schretter and Duke University’s Samantha Harris, 8-7 (3).

Their path to the quarterfinals included one win against Madara Straume of the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Felipe Sarrasague of Elon University, and a default win over the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill’s Sara Daavettila and Wake Forest University’s Petros Chrysochos, who withdrew due to injury.

The men’s soccer team reeled off its fifth win in a row on Saturday, a 5-2 effort against the University of Vermont. Wyatt Omsberg ’18 opened the floodgates in the seventh minute, putting a loose ball into the back of the net with his right foot.

Forward Tiger Graham ’21 netted his first collegiate goal 10 minutes later. A Vermont penalty kick cut Dartmouth’s lead in half, but Eduvie Ikoba ’19 added another tally before halftime. The Big Green had two more goals in the second half. Henry

Stusnick ’20 made one save in his first start since the season opener.

Women’s soccer played Brown University to a scoreless tie through 90 minutes of play and 1:24 of overtime. But Brown’s Star White finished as the hero for the Bears, taking a pass in the left side of the box before launching a shot that grazed the fingertips of Mariel Gordon ’21 and went into the right side of the goal. Dartmouth was outshot 23-6, and Gordon snagged five saves in the loss.

Jack Heneghan ’18 scrambled six times for 17 yards in addition to throwing for 147 yards and two touchdowns on a career-high 72 percent completion percentage.

The Big Green thrilled a crowd of 7,094 on Saturday with a 27-26 overtime win over No. 25 Holy Cross University.

The game looked to swing the Crusaders’ way when they scored a touchdown with three seconds left in the fourth quarter.

But defensive end Jeremiah Douchee ’17 blocked the extra point attempt to send the game to overtime. Dartmouth and Holy Cross traded touchdowns,

and when the Crusaders elected to go for an all-or-nothing twopoint conversion, linebacker Jake Moen ’19 made the critical tackle to win the game for the Big Green.

Dartmouth opened up the scoring on its second drive, beginning at the Holy Cross 48yard line and finishing with a Jack Heneghan ’18 touchdown pass to Emory Thompson ’18.

things up 7-7. By the end of the second frame, the Crusaders had taken a 14-13 lead which held up until nearly the end of the third quarter. With 1:30 remaining in the third quarter, Holy Cross returner Damion Baker muffed a punt and Danny McManus ’17 fell on it. Two plays later, Ryder Stone ’18 scampered 44 yards to put the Big Green back on top.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Crusaders mounted

a long drive that sputtered just inside the red zone. The field goal unit came for a 32-yard attempt only to have the kick blocked by Douchee. Dartmouth went threeand-out on the ensuing drive to set up the Holy Cross’ last-second game-tying touchdown.

Heneghan hit 18 of his 25 throws for 147 yard along with a pair of touchdowns. The Big Green gained 203 yards on the ground, led by 103 from Stone’s

17 carries. Eric Meile ’18 and Jack Traynor ’19 topped the stat sheet for the Dartmouth defense with 11 tackles each, including Traynor’s first career sack.

The win is Dartmouth’s ninth straight nonconference victory and its second win over a ranked opponent in as many seasons. Next up is the Ivy League opener for the Big Green at 2-0 University of Pennsylvania on Friday.

Riley and the team have had some nervous moments this season but have been able to pull out close wins time and time again, thanks to a defensive unit led by team captains Wyatt Omsberg ’18, Tyler Dowse ’18 and Matt Danilack ’18.

Despite Palacios’ success, Riley rested him on Saturday. Stusnick returned to goal for this past Saturday’s game against Vermont and played well despite giving up two goals. It remains unclear who will be playing in goal for the Big Green in key situations going forward, but Riley pointed out that it is important to always have two different goalkeepers who are able to step in at any time. Riley has been known to rotate goalkeepers in the past, as he split time between Stefan Cleveland ’16 and James Hickok ’17 in prior seasons.

Assistant coach and goalkeeper specialist Ryan Fahey was quick to note Palacios’ similarity to great goalkeepers in his focus on the basics.

Following a senior campaign that included a 4:12.56 mile run that qualified for the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America competition as well as a team award for the greatest improvement throughout one’s college career, Connor Clark ’17 graduated from Dartmouth and headed west to join the University of Oregon’s crosscountry team. After participating in the earth science domestic study abroad during his junior fall, Clark retained a semester’s worth of eligibility in NCAA, allowing him to compete as a redshirt senior. He joins a long line of Dartmouth crosscountry athletes who have continued their college careers with the Ducks, including Matt Miner ’12, Alexi Pappas ’12, Will Geoghegan ’14 and Tim Gorman ’16.

When did you first start running competitively and what drew you to the sport?

CC: I started in the third grade. I went to a small school in Middle Valley, California. There were only 30 kids per grade and the only team that we had was cross country and track. We had cross country in the fall and track in the spring, so starting in the third grade, everyone in every grade would join the team. I was running really well, starting in the fifth grade. The races were usually around a mile or a mile and a half; it was more learning how to stretch and take care of our bodies. I liked it right away and kept it up through middle school.

In high school, you participated in both track and cross country.

How did the two sports differ in terms of training?

CC: In high school, training was almost exactly the same. For cross country in high school, you usually do the 5-kilometer run on trails. I went to high school in the city in San Francisco, so there was a lot of training on trails and in different parks. We would do intervals in cross country where our coach would measure out 400 meters or 800m.

On Mondays, we would just do 800m, so we would do a warm-up and we’d go run six of those 800m intervals with some rest in between.

With track, the only difference was that we still did those intervals, but it was all on the track.

WhydidyouchooseDartmouth?

CC: I’ve always valued academics in addition to my running as the two biggest components of being a student or being in school. At my high school, there was definitely an academic pressure to do well and to

with Connor Clark ’17 get into a good school; that’s why I was kind of drawn to the Ivy League where great academics are at the focus, but you can still compete at a high, Division I level without going to a big state school where it is absolutely running first and they pick your major for you.

What was the transition to collegiate track and cross country like, and how is it different from your high school experience?

CC: The biggest thing for me was mileage. Some high school programs you’ll run a lot of miles whether you’re a guy or girl — that’s just part of the training. In my high school program with my coach we did a lot more intensity versus mileage, so we workout two to three times a week doing that interval training. Per week, I was probably only running about 35 miles a week, six days of the week; maybe even less than that. As soon as I got to Dartmouth, some of the lowest mileage guys on the team would run 55 miles a week, and that is pretty standard for any collegiate running on the guys side, Division I at least. I think that was definitely the biggest transition — getting ready for longer weeks and being a little more tired. Also, for cross country you move up from the 5km to the 8km, and that feels like two different worlds. The extra 3km, not quite two miles, added on — that’s just a lot.

I definitely knew that mileage would be jacked up starting in the fall when I entered Dartmouth, and for any crosscountry runner, if you don’t run over the summer, you are going to be at a huge disadvantage. In high school, you could get away with that to some extent, but especially in college you have to run over the summer. Knowing I would have to be running 60 to 70 miles a week at Dartmouth, I started in June at 30 miles a week and I increased by five miles every week until I was running 65 miles a week. Doing that was okay, but that was in the summer time when I wasn’t really doing anything. Being a college student, there is obviously academics, racing and doing workouts in the week, and also, like any freshman in college, there is a lot going on — you’re trying to figure stuff out like routines and time management stuff. My freshman year I also had some knee problems about two-thirds into the season. I definitely did not have the season that I wanted that fall — even all of freshman year; I didn’t run that well until the Ivy League Championships in the spring in outdoor track in my freshman year. The biggest part was getting used to the training process, so getting used to more mileage, longer races, sleep is more important and eating healthily. Sometimes people handle the transition really well and have really stellar freshman years, but a lot of times it’s a bumpy transition and takes you awhile to figure things out and it

definitely took me a while to get that figured out.

What achievement from your time at Dartmouth are you particularly proud of ?

CC: I guess in terms of moments, it’s easy to point to my athletic career.

I’d say big milestones for me were my sophomore winter and spring in track, I finally set a personal record in the mile again in my sophomore winter, which I hadn’t done since my junior year in high school. I continued to run really well into the spring. That winter and spring I also made running my focus at Dartmouth, in that every little thing that I did. If I wanted to go out on a certain weekend, even if we didn’t have a race that week, I chose to get better sleep and be more on top of my schoolwork so I could get more sleep. A lot of distance running is doing better at the little things like stretching the extra five or 10 minutes after practice or showing up five to 10 minutes before practice to make sure my hip is nice and loose before I run 10 miles or icing after practice — the little things add up and can have a big difference.

How does the training and camaraderie differ between Dartmouth and Oregon?

CC: First of all, I think Oregon and Dartmouth have very long traditions with distance running. Obviously, Oregon is incredibly well known for its running — Dartmouth too. I chose Dartmouth over any of the other schools I was looking at because of that camaraderie and that tradition, and it is one of the best places in the country to train. A lot of cross-country teams are similar. You have a lot of the same guys on teams and at this level, everyone loves running.

The clear difference is that Oregon is a huge public university where a lot of athletic scholarships are given out. You see that there is a lot more funding that is able to be allocated toward athletics at a public university as opposed to an Ivy League school. Oregon, I think, has fewer varsity sports than Dartmouth, so that programs that we do have here, they make them count. I think the other thing is that the focus on running and being an athlete is much greater than at Dartmouth. The biggest thing that I’m finding is that at Dartmouth, you’re in a fraternity or sorority and you love your academics, and you also play an instrument, or you’re in an a cappella group and you love doing that, or you may be in a certain club on campus, whatever it may be. People at Dartmouth have multiple groups that they identify themselves with, and so far here that’s less prevalent. It makes sense — the commitment to running here at Oregon is much higher. You spend more hours training or putting out more physical or mental effort than at Dartmouth.

About my senior year, I was running about 80 miles a week in the fall crosscountry season and more in the 70’s for indoors and outdoors. Here, I’m

running the same amount of mileage per week, but the intensity is higher and the workouts are a lot longer. At Dartmouth, we are peaking for the Ivy League Championships — that’s the most important thing. Just making the National Championships as an Ivy League team is rare. The other difference that translates in training is that the National Championships for men goes from 8km to 10km, and the Ivy League Championships is only 8km, and when you’re doing workouts that extra mile and a quarter is a big difference. That’s the biggest difference: Longer workouts and a faster pace, and that definitely takes its toll.

Do you feel extra pressure to perform at a higher level because Oregon is ranked in the NCAA and is a well known running school?

CC: I don’t think so. Definitely the first week of being on campus and showing up to practice, I was like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m here.’ There’s posters of Olympians on the wall or my coach has coached 15 Olympians in the past 10 years. I was definitely a “fanboy” for the first week or so, but then that kind of subsides and you realize “I am in it and I am apart of this.” I’m here to train every single day at a higher intensity. I

think the biggest thing that gets rid of that is the confidence in associate head coach Andy Powell. He has been here for awhile and has coached some of the greatest distance runners of our time right now.

What do you plan to do after Oregon? Any plans to continue running competitively?

CC: Right now, it’s to keep running competitively as long as I can. That’s the immediate goal. I think another reason I was drawn here was because, while I only have eligibility in the NCAA for this fall, the coach is going to keep training me and I will probably end up being what is called a volunteer assistant coach for the Oregon team. I can basically hang around and still do workouts and have some access to some of the resources here at Oregon, so that’s at least a year from now. The coach has made that commitment to me for at least this winter and spring. Next year is a little more in limbo, but I’ve got time to figure it out. There are a lot of club teams in Eugene, Oregon and lots of other opportunities to keep running.

From humble roots, triathlon team expands and thrives

Founded in the fall of 2013 by former members of the women’s swimming team Kendall Farnham ’14, Nina Mascia ’15 Med’21 and Sara Heard ’15, the Dartmouth triathlon team has grown from a small team on a shoestring budget to a team with approximately 30 members, boasting competitors who have excelled at the national level. Katie Clayton ’18, Emma Sklarin ’18 and Sonia Rowley ’19 finished in the top 25 of the women’s 20-24 age group at the USA Triathlon national championship in August and are qualified to race at the 2018 International Triathlon Union World Triathlon Grand Finale in Gold Coast, Australia.

The team currently includes three co-captains, three coaches and a 14-member executive board.

When she started the team, Mascia wanted to create a team that could excel in athletics but also be dedicated to supporting each other and building a community.

“We had people come that could not swim one lap and people who were varsity-level athletes — we all came together toward the same goal, which was really cool,” Mascia said. “And I think [that is] exactly why we started the team, to just

“I feel that I have a lot I owe to the program,” Dozier said. “I feel so blessed and honored that they chose me to come to this school — it’s such an amazing opportunity — so I’m going to work as hard as I can to build the name of the program. We haven’t won an Ivy Championship yet, so I’m going to be there every day working my butt off so we can accomplish this goal.”

Overall, the Big Green is excited for the future. “[Dozier] is already coming on a pretty good level, and she’s only going to get better. If she can continue to develop and have the mindset to grow herself with her team to be one of the best the league has ever had,” Doron said.

Despite losing to Harvard University this past weekend, Dozier and the team are hoping to bounce back in its games against Columbia University and Cornell University this Friday and Saturday, respectively.
