Residents in the un-parished area of Horsham have an opportunity to comment on their draft Neighbourhood Plan. The Horsham Blueprint Neighbourhood Plan attracted much interest last weekend at the pop-up shop in Swan Walk. The general public are clearly keen to show an interest in their future of their town.

Horsham Blueprint Neighbourhood Forum was established by the three Neighbourhood Councils – Denne, Forest and Trafalgar – together with representatives from local organisations, including the Horsham Society, Horsham Town Community Partnership and Horsham in Bloom in order to create a Neighbourhood Plan for the un-parished area of Horsham.

After extensive consultation and engagement with residents and businesses the ideas put forward have been formulated into the policies in the Draft Plan which is out for your comments now. Unlike the Horsham District Council Local Plan, the Blueprint Neighbourhood Plan does not allocate sites for development but concentrates on ensuring that any development in its area provides the type of housing that residents have said they want. It will also ensure that the design of any development enhances the character and heritage of our town as well as being environmentally friendly and energy efficient. The plan will help protect much loved green spaces in Horsham, including Horsham Park and Chesworth Farm, while preserving the small pockets of green which line many streets and ensuring green corridors are maintained for wildlife. The plan also has policies to safeguard community facilities, leisure and cultural activities and to ensure that provision is increased as the population of the town continues to grow. The

plan aims to make Horsham an age-friendly town, accessible and welcoming to all generations and people of all abilities. The Draft Plan can be viewed in full on line, or at the Council Offices and Horsham Library - or better still visit the pop-up shop in Swan Walk by the swans statue on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15, 10am - 4pm. There will be an opportunity to discuss the plan and to fill in a questionnaire with your comments; or people can complete the on-line survey anytime at: http://www.horshamblueprint. org/draft-plan/ The consultation closes on 24 March and your comments will help to improve the plan before it is assessed by an independent government examiner. Once approved, all residents and businesses in the un-parished area will be able to participate in a referendum. If agreed, the document will become a statutory planning document that will sit alongside Horsham District Council’s Local Plan and be used to determine planning applications.

BBC’s Any Questions at Collyer’s! Collyer’s reently welcomed BBC Radio 4 to the college for a live broadcast of “Any Questions?”, the topical discussion programme in which a panel of personalities from the worlds of politics, media and elsewhere are posed questions by the audience. Chris Mason presented the political debate live from Collyer’s Duckering Hall with Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott (MP for Hackney and Stoke Newington), Andrew Griffith (MP for Arundel and South Downs), James Kirkup (Director of the Social Market Foundation) and Hugh Pennington (Emeritus

Professor of Bacteriology at the University of Aberdeen). Chris Mason thanked Principal Sally Bromley for a warm welcome, and described Collyer’s as: “Something of an academic powerhouse, ranked as it is, as one of best sixth form colleges in the country.” Questions from the floor included the government response to coronavirus, the demise of Flybe and the future of the Labour party’s Momentum movement. The final question discussed the legalisation of cannabis. Collyer’s Deputy Principal Steve Martell was delighted:

“The incredibly professional Radio 4 team were a credit to the BBC and we were delighted to welcome them to Collyer’s. Huge thanks to our students and Linda MacLeman for working so hard behind the scenes to help make tonight possible.” Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley said: “It was a privilege to host BBC Any Questions? and fantastic to see so many people who wouldn’t normally come to the college. The students were buzzing with excitement to meet Chris Mason and learned so much about the technical side of radio and what happens in the production room.

By David Hide, Secretary of Horsham Labour When Collyers College hosted an edition of BBC Radio 4’s Any Questions last week, Horsham Labour Party saw an opportunity to draw the attention of the media, panel and audience members to questions on important local and national issues that needed answers. Rather than risk their questions falling foul of the programme’s selection process Labour Party members highlighted these issues on banners displayed at the college gates. Their questions and demands included; If austerity is over why have we got food banks here in Horsham?

Why are there so many homeless in Horsham? Why do our schools remain underfunded? Build genuinely affordable housing! Hands off our Drill Hall! Keep Rookwood Green! Whilst the presence of the banner brandishing questioners certainly caught the attention of those attending ‘Any Questions’ and of passers by, the issues raised unfortunately did not get an airing that evening. However these important issues require an answer and Horsham Labour Party and many Horsham residents would welcome a response from our local MP and councillors.

St Catherine’s Hospice is set to open its doors to a brand new shop on Billingshurst High Street in a grand opening event at 12pm on Monday 16 March. Their current shop, based in Laura House, Jengers Mead, has been open for over 23 years. Although it has been hugely successful, thanks to the generosity of local supporters, the new shop, on Billingshurst High Street, will offer a much greater profile for the hospice. Volunteers at St Catherine’s will be opening the doors to the new shop, and are encouraging as many local people as possible to join them in cutting the ribbon and celebrating this new exciting venture for the hospice. The new shop will play a vital role in helping St Catherine’s generate the funds they need to care for local people, as well as help to raise awareness of how the hospice supports local people living with a terminal illness, and their family and friends. It will be home to a selection of new items including knitting products and greeting cards, as well as high quality second-hand goods like clothing, books, jewellery, home appliances and antiques.

The shop will be accepting donations from Wednesday 11 March, which you can take directly to the shop, or ask for St Catherine’s staff and volunteers to pick up from your home. Gary Powis, Head of Trading at St Catherine’s, said: “We’re delighted to be opening our new Billingshurst shop this month. nox Beer and Cider Festival held at the Drill Hall in Hor-

sham, organised by the North Sussex branch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. Not only did record numbers attend, helping to create the fantastic atmosphere in the hall, but a new record of over £1000 was raised by festival goers donating to our chosen festival charity, The Samaritans of Horsham and Crawley. North Sussex CAMRA were delighted to welcome the team from Bolney Vineyard which added a variety of still and sparkling wines and gin to the drinks on offer at the event. As ever, various competitions get judged at this event, some judged by festival goers and others by a trained panel of experts. This year, festival goers chose Brolly Brewing as their favourite brewery; run by Horsham resident, Brook Saunders, from his site in Wisborough Green. Brolly won both the light and dark beer of the festival awards, with their Spanky McDanky and Little Pearl

Milk Stout. Our congratulations go to Brook and the team at Brolly. Runner up in the light beer category was Kissingate with Equinut. This beer was brewed especially by Gary at Kissingate with a bit of help from North Sussex branch members as a fun competition against another beer brewed especially for the Equinox Festival by Michael at Chapeau, which also got several votes for beer of the festival. A huge thank you from the North Sussex Branch to Gary and Michael for both their support and the great beers. There were two cider categories to vote for at Equinox this year. The cider of the festival title was a close battle between two previous winners, with Billingshurst based Camrose Cider winning for the second year running just ‘pipping’ of Seacider’s Mango flavoured cider to the post. Illustrator Chris Riddell visits local School for World Book Day! On 3 March, pupils from Christ’s Hospital were enormously excited and privileged to host the acclaimed illustrator Chris Riddell, who came to speak and do a book signing for Year 7 and 8 pupils. The event was held to celebrate World Book Day and was a collaboration between the Library, the English Department and the Visiting Speaker Programme. Chris Riddell, who lives in Brighton, is an accomplished artist and the political cartoonist for the Observer. He has enjoyed great acclaim for his books for A Member of the

Chris spoke to the pupils about his life and work in a fun and approachable manner, while simultaneously illustrating his narrative with sketches which were projected live onto a screen for the audience to enjoy. Some of the pupils were even lucky enough to be given one of Chris Riddell’s sketches, as a reward for asking a ‘good’ question! Chris was kind enough to spend

a long time after his talk with pupils, signing their books and drawing them sketches and personalised dedications. “We were delighted to be able to welcome Chris to speak (and draw!) as part of our celebrations for World Book Day this year. His hugely enjoyable address held both our Second and Third Form (Year 7 & 8), as well as members of staff, completely spellbound,” said Lucinda Moore, Library and Learning Resources Manager. Christy Hawkins, Visiting Speaker Coordinator at Christ’s Hospital added: “Chris Riddell’s spontaneous sketches of Christ’s Hospital students and candid reflections on his own youth entranced his audience, old and young. We hope he will return in future to speak to seniors about art and political satire.”

Squadron Success at Cadet Recruit Course During the weekend of the 14-16 February, the latest intake (19-02) of 1015 (Horsham) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets partook in their very first ‘Beret Camp’. The intention of the camp was to allow the 41 cadets who partook in the course to earn their berets by amalgamating what they had learnt during their journey of Basic Training. Upon passing the course, the cadets would officially become part of the Squadron. A series of arduous activities were required to be completed in order to pass the course. These included Leadership Tasks, a Stretcher Race, Team Building and Aptitude Development, Orienteering and Drill. The course also allowed the older cadets and cadet NCOs to be able to

train the younger generation as well as gain experience in leading a team in order to achieve a common goal in testing operating conditions. Despite the far from ideal weather conditions during Storm Dennis, all the recruits portrayed themselves impeccably and successfully passed the course, thus earning the prestigious RAF beret and ATC cap badge. All the cadets in intake 19-02 felt incredibly proud of the journey in which they had completed and felt that they had developed immensely since arriving for Day 1 of Basic Training back in October. 1015 (Horsham) Squadron is always recruiting. Council blitz littering on major highways Horsham District Council launched a major crackdown on highways littering recently by using dedicated teams in a series of clear-up operations on the District’s roadsides. The Council currently faces an ongoing battle with litter being strewn on the roadside by passing vehicles across the Horsham District. The appearance of litter on roadsides is a blight on our environment and its clearance currently costs local taxpayers some £100,500 a year. This particular operation, which addressed litter on the A24/A264 bypass over five days, cost £9,133.32. Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for the Envi-

ronment, Recycling and Waste, Cllr Philip Circus, commented: “Littering is a crime which not only causes a terrible eyesore for people, but also damages the environment and leaves tax payers out of pocket, which is not acceptable. “We launched this crackdown in the worst hit areas as such a shocking amount of litter has been dumped along these roadsides recently. “I believe that most of us want to live in a clean and tidy district, so I would ask people to think carefully about what they do with their litter. “I would also remind people that they could face significant fines if our enforcement teams

find them continuing to dump litter in this way.” Billboards are set to be installed on roadsides to remind people of the fines they could face. The fines range from fixed penalty notices of £75 for dropping litter and up to £2500 for fly tipping. The Council asks that if road users or members of the public spot offenders littering or fly tipping they should report incidents to them by going to its website or alternatively, supply the Council with Dash Cam footage where possible. More tasers for Sussex Police Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne OBE, has announced that more tasers are to be made available to Sussex and Surrey Police. On Friday (6 March) she stated: “This week it was announced that we have been successful in our bid to the Home Office to equip more officers across Sussex and Surrey with Tasers. It was confirmed that a total of £462,000 has been awarded to fund 560 devices between both forces. “This will mean an extra 291 new Tasers for Sussex Police, bringing the total to more than 1,100. Both forces can now achieve their ambition of making Tasers available for any police officer who wants one (estimated to be 80% of the frontline). “On Monday I saw Taser training in action for myself

and I’m confident that they will act first and foremost as a deterrent to criminals who wish to cause harm to themselves or others. Officers I spoke to welcome this addtional equipment and they hope it will help to reduce assaults and abuse towards them, which has seen a 13% rise locally in the last year. “Today I visited Crowborough to speak with residents about my consultation on the new police station. Whilst there I met students from the Beacon Academy Sixth Form so they could have their say about crime in the area and what they want from their local police station.” Student Shannon (18) said: “A police station is a symbol of reassurance for the community and warns off criminals. I want somewhere safe and open for people to report crime.”

Trekkers get ready to trek Saharan sand dunes for St Catherine’s A group of 57 intrepid trekkers are packing their final provisions and getting ready to head to the Sahara in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice. The brave supporters will trek across Saharan sand dunes to raise money for local terminally ill people and towards the building of a new, larger hospice at Pease Pottage. The group will spend four days trekking across ancient dried up river beds and vast sun-baked plains, and in the evenings will sleep under the stars. Lucy Pitts and her 14-year-old daughter Greta are two trekkers who are ready and raring to go. Lucy said: “Over the years, St

Catherine’s has always been on my radar. I remember fundraising for it as a child and since then, I’ve known several people who’ve spent their last few weeks there. “I usually do at least one big fundraising event a year and when I heard about the trek, I thought it sounded fabulous. Then my daughter said she wanted to sign up too. She was only 13 when we signed up and I had some reservations, but she’s done so well with her fundraising and training. It’s going to be an amazing experience for her. It’ll be her first trip outside of Europe and I can’t think of a better way to give her a rounded education. “I’m looking forward to most of the trip - sleeping in the desert,

pushing myself, meeting new people and visiting Morocco. It’s going to be special watching my daughter experience all those things too. “Sometimes it’s hard to equate that what I, Greta and our fellow trekkers are doing will have a direct impact on other people, but we all know someone with cancer or another life-limiting illness and we’ve all experienced that helpless feeling of being unable to help. But, by doing something like this, we can - and that’s good. “Every part of this experience has been positive so far and we haven’t even left yet!” The bespoke trek is the third overseas adventure that St Catherine’s has hosted, and the local

charity is hoping to raise £140,000 through the incredible challenge. Arron Trott, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, will be with the trekkers in the Sahara: “We’re so grateful to our amazing trekkers for signing up to trek across the largest hot desert in the world. Their efforts will make a big difference to local terminally ill people and their families, and will allow our hospice to help more people in the future. At the moment, we can only care for one in three people who need

us. It’s vital that we keep raising money so we can care for everyone. The Slimming World Pork Pie

(4.5 syns or Free if used as a Healthy extra B) Ingredients For the Filling: 5% fat lean Pork Mince Pork Stock Cube For the Jelly: Ham Hock Stock Cube Gelatine - 3 sheets For the Pastry: 6-7 slices of Wholemeal bread Egg yolk Method For the Filling: Preheat the oven to 170C. Mash/Blend the pork mince, some seasoning and a pork stock cube until it makes a nice paste. Separate the mix between 3 moulds such as oven safe coffee mugs. Bake in the oven for 25 mins. Once cooked turn out onto a wired rack and let cool

For the Jelly: While the meat is cooking make a jelly using ham hock stock cube and 200ml of boiling water. Soak the gelatine sheets in cold water for 5 mins. Take out and add to the hot stock. Add 200 ml of cold water, cool and refrigerate. A thin ďŹ lm of fat will form on top, remove the fat and keep stirring occasionally until it just sets but not too solidly. For the Pastry: Cut the crusts off 6 slices of bread and roll ďŹ&#x201A;at with a rolling pin. Cut 1 piece of bread in half long ways and cut 2 circles using the same size mug as you used as a mould. Coat the bread in egg yolk and wrap strips around the sides of the meat. Coat the circles with egg yolk and apply to the top and bottom of the meat sealing the edges by pinching together. Lightly egg wash the outside of the pie and lightly sprinkle coarse sea salt over the pie. Place on a baking tray sprayed with fry light. Bake in a medium oven for about 10-15 mins until golden brown. Place on a wire rack to cool. Once cool, pierce a few holes around the top of the pie using a syringe or piping bag. Force some jelly mix into the pie until it oozes out. Refrigerator to set and enjoy!

A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to anoth-

Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share

of the property is placed into the trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has unequivocal rights to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even

Could you help someone like Naqeeb?

A teenager who fled his home in Afghanistan is encouraging people in West Sussex to think about fostering an unaccompanied asylum-seeking child. Naqeeb arrived in the UK at the age of 16 in 2015. Like many of the millions of refugees who have made long and dangerous journeys to escape violence and persecution, Naqeeb had to leave

his family behind to travel here on his own. Naqeeb, now 20, was found foster care through West Sussex County Council and has shared his experience as part of a new campaign highlighting the need for more foster carers in West Sussex. “My foster family really helped me a lot,” Naqeeb said. “She taught me about English culture,

she took me to a community club and I’m glad she did, I met my first English friends there. She also helped me to be a good cook!” The ‘Walk a mile in my shoes’ campaign also features a video of Worthing-based foster carers Rose and Phil, retired teachers who foster a teenager who is also from Afghanistan. Rose said: “Our boy’s been with us for three years now, and we treat him as one of the family. He came to both our birth children’s weddings and we took him on his first holiday. One of the great joys for us has been the improvement in his English. “The county council provides courses on a wide variety of subjects, including coping with mental health issues, adolescence and preparing for adult life. The monthly support groups are informal and a great way to share experiences with other carers and we have access to social events as well.” In 2018 alone, an estimated 32% of asylum seekers who arrived in Europe were children. Unaccompanied asylumseeking children who arrive in the UK are taken into the care of the local authority. If it is not

possible to trace a suitable family member or guardian, these children are placed in foster care or supported lodgings accommodation. Currently there not enough foster carers in West Sussex for young people like Naqeeb – but the new campaign aims to change that. Since launching a month ago the two videos have had over 100,000 views which have led to a number of positive enquiries and initial visits from our fostering recruitment team. Jacquie Russell, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “We have a duty of care to all of our vulnerable children in the county. Our foster carers are truly special people who possess special qualities, namely patience, dedication, resilience and above all empathy. I am very proud of the care and support our foster carers provide. “Unaccompanied asylumseeking children come into our care isolated and afraid, having often been subjected to abuse and trauma. These are children in need of extra support and we know how rewarding it is for people like Rose and Phil to see the difference they can make to a young person’s life.”

Talented Young Chef moves to Horsham Michael Pearson, (no relation folks! Davey) or Chef Mike as he is known to friends, colleagues and customers, is a 23 year old who has moved his Life from York to run the kitchen at the Kings Arms on the Bishopric in Horsham. We caught up with him to see why he’s moved to Horsham and why the Kings Arms. “I love pubs” says Chef Mike, “so where some of my former peers in the Catering College had ambitions to work in Hotels or high end Restaurants, I’d much rather build my career so that one day I can run my own pub” When questioned as to why he feels that way Chef Mike responds positively: “A good pub can beat the best Restaurants where food is concerned

and I enjoy meeting new people, so when the opportunity arises I

The two original plantrooms and associated mechanical plant had long surpassed their expected life cycle and were beyond economical repair, the new plantroom being required to provide more efficient

heating services to the wards within Clarence House, overlooking Praed Street. Equipment from major specialised manufacturers was sourced, including heat exchangers, pumps, a pressurisation unit, expansion cylinders, valves and strainers. electrical engineering, priding itself with its coveted reputation for reliability, high quality work and excellent customer service, Director Peter Howard says: “Access to the rooftop plantroom was just one of the challenges that our team had to overcome. In order to access the work area safely, a scaffolding structure was erected from the ground floor to roof level. Health and safety was paramount throughout the project.” The two-story plantroom was delivered on two wide-load lorries out of business hours to ensure traffic was at its quietest on the busy surrounding London streets. On a Saturday, the plantrooms were crane lifted over the building and lowered into position within the courtyard area. Circuits were stripped out and capped for future connection to the new plantroom, and new pipework was run from the nearest steam and condense mains to serve the new plantroom and the new heat exchangers, with all work configured to a high industry installation standards. Removal of the two existing plantrooms, one on the hospital roof and the other at lower level within the courtyard, each containing associated equipment, was a complicated procedure at the restricted site. A major requirement throughout the work was the continuation of the heating services to the hospital’s Winnicott Baby Unit, where environmental conditions

are critical. Iain Radford, an HVAC engineer at Howard Electrical, commented: “Precautions were taken to ensure all communications were kept open to CBRE and ward nurses. The specialist nature of the hospital activities meant that we had limited time for necessary isolations and shutdowns, but we managed to supply supplementary heating throughout.” Project Manager Alan Blackman-Noakes of major provider for the health sector, CBRE said: “The new installation was a highly complex project completed in a very tight timeframe. Howard Electrical exceeded all expectations and worked in a highly professional and efficient manner. The plantroom is now fully operational and delivering heating to the Clarence Wing.” He added: “Disruptions were kept to a minimum and were fully planned and communicated so that the hospital could continue delivering its own service to the public in London. The Hawth to present its first professional in house production: Treasure Island Tickets for The Hawth’s first ever in-house production, TREASURE ISLAND, are selling fast with the first two performances (Friday 13 March 7pm & Saturday 14 March 3pm) already sold out. The Robert Louis Stevenson classic will be brought to life on stage next month in a brand new adaptation being produced and directed by The Hawth Crawley. Treasure Island features a superb cast of actors, each taking on multiple roles in order to transport audiences from the Admiral Benbow Inn, across the perilous seas to a desert island where adventure awaits. Hazel Monaghan plays Ben Gunn/Morgan/Beth, Simon Stallard takes on the roles of Black Dog/Dr Livesey/Israel Hands, Ethan Taylor is Billy Bones/Long John Silver and Kim Wright plays Mother Hawkins/

Captain Smollett. The Hawth is also using the show as an opportunity to engage local, young performers, offering 20 youngsters the chance to experience performing in a professional show. The juvenile cast auditioned for director Sarah Slator in January and were selected to take on the roles of the Young Jim Hawkins, Hawkins’ older counterpart and as members of the ensemble. Why not join in the River Arun Boat Rally The Wey & Arun Canal Trust is once again running its popular boat rally on the River Arun, an event which proves navigation rights still exist on the river. The free event will be held on Sunday May 10 and is open to all small crafts, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards. The River Arun Boat Rally began in 1983 and the annual event has been run by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust since 2011. The aim is to en-

sure that when restoration of the Wey & Arun Canal is complete, there will be no legal reason why boats cannot venture from the canal into the Arun. The Trust aims to restore the 23-mile waterway which runs from Shalford in Surrey to Pallingham in West Sussex. Last year’s event saw a record turnout of small boats, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards take the three-and-a-half hour trip from Pulborough and Stopham

to the tidal limit at Pallingham in West Sussex. The route reaches the furthest navigable point for boats. The Wey & Arun Canal is now well used by canoes, kayaks and, more frequently, paddleboards. Brighton Philharmonic presents Worbey and Farrell, Brighton Dome: The Review Entertainment Phil Dennett Two pairs of hands are better than one, so the saying goes. And a lot more fun when it comes to jazzing up the classics. Not that dashing keyboard duo Worbey and Farrell forgot to pay the composers full respect. There was no danger here of too many cooks spoiling this fascinating musical broth on Farrell’s 50th birthday bash. They have just dusted down and put a new dazzling sheen on some well-worn pieces of music like the Warsaw Concerto and Rhapsody in Blue. Honestly, the composers would have enjoyed the way these keyboard creatives infuse the origi-

nals with a spirit of fun as well as retaining their innate soul. Since Queen’s marvellous front man Freddie Mercury loved nothing more than a little melodrama, he would surely have relished their riveting re-make of the legendary Bohemian Rhapsody. The audience did, judging by the rapturous applause. Perhaps they admired the combination of sharp timing and complex co-ordination pouring from fast-flowing fingertips. Many of the regulars in the audience must have had some idea of what was in store, the dynamic duo having made their debut at the Dome in 2018 in a Brighton Philharmonic concert. Even they, though, must have

been delighted at the captivating treatment of Nigel Hess’s meltingly lyrical theme from Ladies in Lavender, an engrossing mash-up of Strauss and the exhilaration of tango and Scott Joplin music. Shifting Peter and the Wolf from Russia to South Yorkshire diluted none of its playfulness in a performance of wit and musical imagination which must have amused the children in the audience. The Worbey and Farrell appearance was the latest concert staged by the Brighton Philharmonic to give its faithful patrons a different style of programme this season. It brought a display of humour, supreme confidence and inventiveness, coupled with sensitivity.

Horsham’s tough afternoon at promotion chasing Camberley

Richard Ordidge- Sports Reporter Horsham’s young side were eventually overpowered in a spirited defensive performance, going

down 46-17 at Camberley, another of the sides in the promotion mix. Camberley were first out of the blocks with two tries in the first 13 minutes. Dom Sammut was

dominating the line-out, Dylan Emmerton getting over from a driving maul and then Adam Pickett scoring the first of his two tries from close range converted by Tom Dunn. The Green and Whites then started to get into the game with a long period of possession in the Camberley 22, leading to a try for Giles Barber converted by Tom Johnson. Johnson added a penalty awarded at the breakdown before Sammut stole another line-out to crash over and score with Camberley taking a 17-10 lead into the half time break. Somewhat against the run of play, Josh Sudder made an interception on halfway to finish with a fine handoff which was well converted by Johnson to level the scores at 17-17. Thereafter it was all Camberley, with tries from Tio Funaki, Ash Wright, two from Alex Turton and Pickett as the immense defensive demands on Horsham’s young and inexperienced side took its toll. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said after the game: “A predictably tough afternoon against promotion chasing Camberley. With our deep injury list combined with a lot of unavailability due to the rescheduled game, we anticipated a tough match and asked for a showing of character which we duly got. Our lads felt the score line

did not reflect game and to draw the scores level on 45 minutes was testament to the spirit in the young side. However, with our front line lineout operators absent today and diminished power in the scrum as a result, quality possession was always a challenge which ultimately proved the undoing. Despite the challenges, the positives are many, not least the fact that six teenagers were on display alongside a further three being 22 and under which bodes well for the future. Indeed, one of those youngsters played at Loose Head and according to the refs assessor, was the dominant prop. A pity the ref saw things completely differently and was conned by their experienced tight head. Our man of the match was awarded to a young player playing his first full 80 for the first team in the engine room of the scrum against a huge set of forwards. With strong carries and effective clearances at rucks, it’s great to see how young Luke Powell is developing as a player. On Saturday we have a break, which will be well received and a chance to recover some knocks ahead of the season run in commencing with a tough assignment against Havant away on Saturday March 21st.”

Horsham edged out in tight game Saturday March 7 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Horsham Ladies 2-3 Bromley & Beckenham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter When the teams met earlier in the season the result was a 1-1 draw and last Saturday, Horsham’s final home game of the campaign - was another close encounter, but this time the Kent side shaded Horsham by the odd goal in five. In the first quarter Brom Becks went ahead from a brilliant short corner deflection, which they followed up with another goal – from an additional short in the second quarter, shifting the ball around well before placing it in the net. Resuming two down, Horsham rallied in the second half when Rosie Firth dribbled the ball up for Fran Crossley to dive and convert a stunning goal. Then, also in the third

quarter, Laura Coggins deflected the ball home, only for the Kentish visitors to come back to take all three points. Fran Crossley told the District Post: “It really was a lovely feeling when I managed to pull off our first goal and that seemed to get them rattled. We had chances in the fourth quarter and hit the post. Our keeper, Hannah Jackson, made some excellent saves and it was great to fight back to equalise. We could so easily have got a point with a draw, but It was a very enjoyable game. We’ve got two tough fixtures left – this Saturday we go to current runner up Barnes, and then for our final league game of the season, we return to south west London to take on leaders Wimbledon. We lost 2-1 to both of those sides in the reverse fixtures, but we’re up for the challenge. The season has flashed by and although it has been horrendous training in the rain, we’ve achieved our prime objective of staying up in Conference East !”

Sussex Cup details released Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter This year’s Sussex T20 Cup starts on Saturday May 2nd. Both Horsham and Roffey play in Round 2 on that day – at 4pm at Cricket Field Road, Horsham will play the winner of the earlier match between Three Bridges and Ifield, while Roffey travel to Premiership returners, Haywards Heath. Other matches involving local clubs include: West Chiltington v Findon and Slinfold v Roffey 2nds (Round 1) and, in Round 2, Billingshurst v Bognor, Slinfold or Roffey 2nds v Horsham Trinity, and West Chiltington or Findon v Chichester Priory Park. In the 38 years of the Sussex Cup, Horsham has won it a record 13 times, lastly in 2016, since when Roffey has appeared in three consecutive Finals, winning in 2017. Winners of the Sussex Cup Final gain automatic entry into the National T20 Cup against county counterparts. In Round 1 of the Plate Tournament Horsham Thirds play East Grinstead 4ths, and Felbridge 2s come up against Roffey 3s, while, in the Trophy competition, Dormansland host Horsham 2s in Round 1, with the winner playing East Grinstead 2s in the second round, which also features Barns Green v Broadbridge

Then, on Sunday May 10th they welcome Kent League side Sandwich in the Royal London Club Championship (National knockout cup). There will also be a full range of fixtures in the new midweek T20 tournament – The Sussex Slam – with around 70 clubs entered, each guaranteed at least four games in the preliminary stages. And, with the ever popular local Mirfield and Gullick Cup evening competitions, with the finals at Horsham Cricket Club, the forthcoming season promises to be even busier, and more entertaining than ever.

Horsham relegated, but determined to bounce back Saturday March 7 – Premier – Division 2 East Blackheath & Elthamians 3-1 Horsham Men;s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter When the teams met – at home – in November it was a bottom of the table clash and the score was the same, since when the Kent side has moved up to mid table, but, sadly, despite a recent flurry of better results, Horsham has remained at the foot of the table, their fate being finally sealed with relegation last Saturday. Horsham Captain Sam Macdonald told the District Post: “Blackheath are a strong, physically fit and well drilled side - they stuck to their game plan, which they executed well. We weren’t quite good enough on the day and we couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net.” Blackheath scored a field goal in the first half and although Horsham had two short corners, two shots were saved, with the visitors leading 1-0 at the break. Mid way through the second half Blackheath went further ahead with an open goal, before scoring their third with a penalty flick. However, to their great credit, Horsham kept pressing and were rewarded when, after a one on one with the keeper, Player Coach Andy Blood converted a penalty flick for a consolation goal. Reflecting on Horsham’s difficult campaign, and current situation, Sam Macdonald said: “In the first half of the season we leaked goals, but we’ve been far better since Christmas. Following the glory days of a few seasons ago, when we’d won back to back promotion, we’ve had a tough time. The heart of that brilliant team was in their mid thirties with young families and they all retired at the same time. In all we’ve lost about twenty players from that era in the club, but we’ve got some great replacements coming through and we’ve

Juniors thriving at Horsham Cricket Club Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Cricket Club is delighted to report that their Juniors finished their last weekend of U11’s Indoor Cricket with a flourish - with wins over Three Bridges and Barns Green. The team, made up of last season’s U9’s and U10’s, were one of the youngest teams entered in the tournament, Manager Katharine Lee commenting: “It was fantastic to finish on such a high! Tuesday March 10 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 0-2 Bognor Regis Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was a very disappointing evening for Horsham, who started busily created plenty of chances but, time after time, were miles off target. In August the teams drew 1-1 at Nyewood Lane, but this time, although it could have been dif-

ferent, Bognor were clear winners simply because they were better at maximising opportunities – with a goal in each half. Horsham broke through soon after the start, visiting keeper Amadou Tangara saving Greg Cundle’s shot with his feet, before recent signing Alex Clark set the pattern by blazing well over. Then, Horsham centre half Joe Shelley had to quell a challenge from Bognor’s Dan Smith, ahead of the seasiders earning their first corner, and a full stretch save and subsequent catch by Horsham goalkeeper George

Bentley. A series of Horsham attacks followed, with Dorking loanee Elliott Buchanan’s left-footed effort going high and wide. Cundle fired straight at Tangara before shooting over wildly, as did Buchanan. Next, with Horsham dominating, Harvey Sparks broke through to gain the first of two consecutive corners. But, it was Bognor who went in front, when Tommy Leigh, in space with nobody closing him down, sent a long, hard, low strike into the bottom left corner of the goal. After Clark had shot straight at Tan-

gara, Bentley’s legs kept Leigh at bay, the first half ending with two Bognor corners, in between which their free kick was palmed over. Resuming a goal adrift, Horsham soon saw their set piece punched clear, and in a session of sustained pressure, Clark was far too aerial and Alex Kelly sent over a dangerous cross, sadly uncollected. Bognor rallied, the woodwork coming to Horsham’s rescue from a free kick just outside the area, until, in the 54th minute, visiting skipper Harvey Whyte put Bognor further ahead

from close range in a goal mouth melee. Cundle might soon have reduced the deficit, but somehow contrived to shoot well wide when one on one six yards out. Both keepers then safely gathered tame shots, before Horsham almost benefited from an own goal when Kristian Campbell’s defensive header appeared destined to evade Tangara. Amid Horsham substitutions, attacks saw a cross and then a shot from Man of the Match Sparks going off for a corner. A Bognor foray soared over, before Bentley, on his knees could only chest the ball away. Horsham kept trying, but three late corners came and went unfulfilled. Horsham had created some excellent approach play, especially in the first half, but were left to rue missed chances when they were in the ascendancy. Needing to bounce back quickly, the Hornets have a trip to south Essex on Saturday to meet 14th-placed Bowers & Pitsea, whom they beat 4-0 at home in November. Then, on Tuesday, there is cup action at The Camping World Stadium when, in the Velocity Trophy (League Cup) Semi Final, Horsham play relegation threatened Cheshunt.

Horsham delighted with handy Potters Bar double ously put past the advancing Constable, with Cundle charging forward to clinch the win. There was still just time for Horsham to put the icing on the cake, but although Harris was too aerial, the Hornets were well satisfied with three points as they approach the business end of the season.

BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 2-0 Potters Bar Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Play-off chasing Horsham reprised their 2-nil victory in Hertfordshire earlier in the season, late goals again proving decisive against mid table Potters Bar. Horsham, though, started hesitantly and were indebted to Charlie Harris for denying Thomas Gogo his close quarter strike, before responding with a well- built attack, Alex Clark ultimately heading wide. El-

liott Buchanan, on temporary loan from Dorking Wanderers, was kept at bay, his subsequent header being off target, as was Clark’s strike, although the newly signed midfielder went on to impress with a series of incursions. Visiting keeper R’avan Constable arrested Harris’ cross and completed two routine saves, Greg Cundle then finding the side netting. Horsham thought they had taken the lead, but were aggrieved when Buchanan’s goal was ruled offside. They kept pressing, a Will Miles header going adrift and a promising-looking effort from Alex Kelly almost defeating Constable, who recovered just in

time to prevent Horsham scoring with the break looming. Restarting with the score still at nil-nil, Horsham threatened, first with a Clark corkscrew searing the bar, then with Buchanan’s header, dramatically saved by Constable. Further opportunities followed, Clark being just unable to finalise a Buchanan/Cundle build up. Constable then kept out Harris’ attempt, before, with action switching to the other end, Miles had to be at his best to deny Nana Kyei, who then gave Hornets’ keeper George Bentley his first job, with a run of the mill gather. Then, with Potters Bar seemingly competing, Horsham

went in front when centre-half Joe Shelley nodded in Harris’ corner. Provoked, the visitors replace Kyei with Bradley Sach, who immediately unleashed a rocket that was pushed away for a corner, Morgan squandering the chance by heading wide. Striving to put the game beyond Potters Bar’s reach, Horsham surged forward, but Cundle was unable to latch onto Kelly’s feed, then Man of the Match Shelley narrowly avoided the conversion of Harris’ set piece. However, with time fast evaporating, Horsham took full advantage of a defensive blunder after Bentley had whistled up a lengthy kick, which Kieron Cathline gener-
