Horsham MP visits Horsham Fibromyalgia Support Group

The Horsham Fibromyalgia Support Group, which meets on the first Tuesday evening of every month at Horsham Hospital, was joined earlier this month by local MP, Jeremy Quin, to discuss Fibromyalgia and ongoing research. Fibromyalgia can be an extremely painful and debilitating condition requiring intense pain relief for periods of time for some sufferers and ongoing pain relief for other sufferers, depending on the severity of their condition. Those living with this condition are unable to conduct their lives normally as they never know when another incident may occur. There is an excellent regular clinic at Horsham Hospital which helps on pain relief and the support group, which is there to provide mutual support to local people with the condition and their families. As a condition which can be apparently “invisible” to others, those living with it may have particular issues in the work environment and with the benefits system.

While £2.4m has been invested in research into the condition by the Government in recent years, at the request of the group, Mr Quin is investigating where the investment was made and how those with Fibromyalgia can best benefit from advances in pain relief. Mr Quin commented: “Living with a long term condition, which can be so painful and debilitating, is very tough. I am sympathetic to the call for research investment in this field and want to ensure that those with the condition are kept informed of progress being made.” Jackie Bull, on behalf of the group, said: “The Group meets regularly and members find our mutual support extremely helpful. New members are always welcome and can learn more about us by emailing our group on fmshorsham@gmail.com and Mr Quin has also kindly offered to pass on our details to anyone interested in hearing more if you contact him on jeremy. quin.mp@parliament.uk.”

Working together, we enjoy and achieve In the lead up to the start of a public inquiry regarding the construction of a waste incinerator in Horsham, local community group, No incinerator for Horsham (Ni4H) is appealing for continued public support. In a recent statement, which read, “Many thanks for all donations, we need more money to be fully represented by a barrister and experts at the Inquiry. Please support our Fundraising. Could you bake cakes, serve teas, donate prizes, crafts, plants, produce, books, toys or help at a fundraising event?” the group listed a number of upcoming events, including a fundraising quiz on Saturday (28 September), a tea and cake afternoon on October 5, an Autumn fair on October 12 and the ‘Rock Off 2’ gig on 22 November. Ni4H Vice-Chairman, Kevin Slatter, explained: “The activity levels surrounding the No Incinerator 4 Horsham Community Group intensifies as we approach the Public Inquiry start date of the 29th October, to be held at Horsham Sports Club. Ni4H members are working full time with Experts and Barristers to pull together a compelling case and reasons that the building of an incinerator in the Horsham area should be refused. “Alongside building the legal case, awareness campaigns and fundraising activities also continue with a Quiz, Barn Dance, Tea and Cakes and Rock-Off 2 all arranged for the coming weeks. “On top of Ni4H activity, the winds of change are becoming more apparent and the clear message that the environment must come before business profit when it comes to air quality and climate change. Be under no illusion that incineration does add to climate change – Climate Change Strikes on Friday were widely attended Globally, it was announced at the

Labour party conference that NO incinerators would be approved under a Labour Government and there is now an open letter to and discussions with the European

Many thanks for all donations, we need more money to be fully represented by a barrister and experts at the Inquiry Commission as more than 50 NGOS condemn waste incineration. “Ni4H are also continuing to work with local Parish Councils and other groups interested in protecting the local environment. All of these people can’t be wrong and gives us great support and the incentive for Ni4H to continue the fight on behalf of the community. “We still need more funding and more help, please get involved, make a donation or let us know if you are prepared to do a 3-minute talk about your views at the inquiry. Two signalised junctions in Horsham to be refurbished Full refurbishment works at two signalised junctions in Horsham will take place from Tuesday 1 October. This will include new traffic signals which use LED technology, making them more energy-efficient, costing less to run and making them more reactive to traffic movements. The refurbishment will also see signal heads and poles being replaced, the latest detectors installed, the pedestrian crossing being upgraded and the blister paving slabs by the side of the crossing point for visually impaired users will be refreshed. The refurbishment will happen in two phases: Phase one: Copnall Way/Albion Way junction – work commences on Tuesday 1 October until the end of November. Phase two: Springfield Road/ Albion Way junction – work is planned to begin on Monday 6 January 2020 until the end of February 2020.

The road will be clear for December and the Christmas period. Roger Elkins, Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: “These works are being undertaken to replace old and failing equipment and to upgrade the existing technology to more cost effective and energy efficient equipment. “We also want to make sure that cyclists who use these junctions are safe which is why we are including additional low-level signals, allowing them a five second gap over vehicles in order to see them safely across the junctions.” The works will cost in the region of £350,000. Temporary traffic lights and lane closures will be used throughout the works, but there are no plans for road closures or diversionary routes. Nuthurst Cricket Club’s brand new pavilion officially opens

Nuthurst Cricket Club’s new pavilion officially opened on Saturday 14 September at The Common, Mannings Heath during a day of celebrations, fun and of course, cricket. Local residents, club members and their families were joined in the sunshine by special guests, including Sussex and England cricket legend Chris Adams, who performed the official ribbon cutting. Speaking afterwards, Chris commented: “I am absolutely delighted to participate in this celebration of village cricket. I look back with great fondness to when my father took me to his cricket club - local cricket is the foundation of the game. The vol-

unteers are the real heroes here. What wonderful timing to open this new pavilion in the World Cup winning year.” Nuthurst Juniors Cricket Club members were treated to a fun cricket session, organised by Carl Tupper of Sussex Cricket Club on Saturday morning with coaches and parents joining in, followed by an adult club players’ cricket match before the Official Opening Ceremony at 4pm, which was also attended by MP for Horsham Jeremy Quin. Younger visitors had fun in the Kids Zone created for the event and took part in cricket skills games, oversized darts and golf activities. Club Chairman Kevin Barnes said of the event: “It is wonderful to see all the plans and detail we have been working on, for the newly built pavilion, finally come to fruition and be enjoyed by so many visitors today. We couldn’t be more pleased with the result, which is being put to immediate use now and will be used by future generations of players and members of our community”. The club has worked tirelessly to raise funds for the new build, completed at the end of July this year, and looks forward to using the new modern facilities during home matches and the Junior’s Cricket Programme. The new pavilion provides smart new facilities and a fantastic central community space with seating

for 50 people opening into a new modern kitchen, to be used for events and meetings run by local community groups. Nuthurst Cricket Club won generous grants for the project both from organisations, including Biffa Award, a multimillion pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to communities and environmental projects across the UK, and Sport England, who are committed to building an active nation that caters for everyone. Gillian French, Biffa Award Head of Grants, said: “At Biffa Award we are pleased to be able to support projects like the creation of Nuthurst Cricket Club’s new pavilion. Projects like this provide the infrastructure that enables communities to thrive. We can’t wait to see the building being used by all members of the community.” The following organisations also generously provided grants for the project: Friends Supporting Sport & Recreation in Nuthurst Parish, Gatwick Airport Community Trust, Peter Harrison Foundation and The National Lottery Community Fund. For further information about Nuthurst Cricket Club, contact Eileen Le Rossignol at nutterssocial@gmail.com

St Catherine’s says a heartfelt thank you to local community

As St Catherine’s Hospice prepares to auction off the 26 stunning heart sculptures which have captured the hearts and minds of people in the local community over the last 10 weeks, a patient from the hospice wanted to

share why the incredible support you’ve shown HeART to Heart has been so important. Babs visits St Catherine’s Day Hospice every Thursday and has found a new love for art after taking part in the hospice’s art

therapy classes. She said: “When I first heard the word hospice I was really nervous, because as far as I was aware St Catherine’s was where people came to die. But once I walked through the door here, it was great. Before coming here I’d never put a brush to canvas but I’ve loved the art classes. They’re marvellous. I create something over two hours and take it home. And it’s been nice to create art for my children and give them something to keep. I’m very proud of everything Andree, the art therapist has taught me. I’d never have thought to do any art at home, but doing art at the hospice just lifts me up. If I’m ever having a bad day now, I look around my room at home at my art, and think I’ve done that, I’ve made that, and it makes my day. As well as activities, the nurses have talked to me about different aspects of my illness. They’ve helped me in so many ways and

everyone here does far, far more than they need to. People go above and beyond. And it makes me feel joyful. There’s just so much love here. St Catherine’s is such a good organisation, but I know the hospice can’t care for everyone. The new hospice at Pease Pottage is going to be superior, but there’s a long way to go yet to get the money needed. But to all the people who’ve supported St Catherine’s art trail, or and put their hearts into doing things to raise money, thank you. You deserve a round of applause. You’ve made such a difference to me.” Funds raised from HeART to Heart will help to make sure that more local people, like Babs, can enjoy art therapy, as well as the many other therapies the hospice offers. St Catherine’s provides terminally ill people and their family and friends with vital physical and emotional care. But currently, the local charity can only provide this care for one in three people who

need it. With the support of people like you, St Catherine’s wants to make sure that in the future no one has to face death and loss alone. And there’s one final chance for you to support St Catherine’s HeART to Heart trail and raise further funds at the HeART to Heart Farewell Exhibition. Taking place on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October 2019, this is your last chance to see all 26 stunning hearts together in one location, at the Copthorne Hotel Effingham Gatwick. Tickets are limited and are already selling fast, so make sure you book as soon as possible at: www.stch.org. uk/exhibition After this, people will get the chance to take one of the beautiful hearts home forever at an exclusive live auction on Wednesday 30 October 2019. To register your interest in attending the auction, please email: heart@stch.org.uk. For more information about these events, please visit: www.stch.org. uk/hearts

Mobility Scooter ‘Taster’ Sessions

If you are thinking about purchasing a mobility scooter and have not driven one before, a FREE 20-minute ‘taster’ session could help you decide on the size or type of scooter you need, say local volunteer group Horsham Scooter Safety. Leader, David Searle explained: “Our ‘taster’ sessions introduce people to scooters and show them they can be safe and considerate drivers. We want to reduce the number of accidents and incidents involving these useful buggies. “Drivers who already own a scooter can attend to brush up their driving skills and pass on their experience and tips for safety. Very often, it’s relatives or friends of drivers who recommend that they attend our sessions.” The short introduction to safe scooter driving will take place at Age UK’s Lavinia House on Wednesday 2 October. Twentyminute sessions run every half hour, from 10.0 - 11.30am and

1.30 - 3.30pm. Arranged and run by friendly volunteers; there is NO CHARGE, but booking a place is essential - see below. Lavinia House, the home of Age UK Horsham District, is located in Dukes Square behind the Drill Hall in Denne Road. There is ample parking. Tickets can be bought at the office. There will be the opportunity to purchase a hot drink in the Day Club before or after a session. Full 90-minute sessions, held at convenient local venues, help scooter drivers be safer, show courtesy to other pavement users and include an accompanied route along pavements, across roads and into shops. These are also FREE. Book your place: To book your place or make enquiries, please ring 01403 269 384 or email horshamscootersafety@gmail.com Also see the website: horshamscootersafety.org.uk

Activity Leader’ across the regions to the highly esteemed ‘Industry Champion of the Year’ which is judged by the Children’s Activities Association Board of Trustees. Kicks Dance runs dance lessons, workshops, parties and Primary School sessions with a focus on fun and enjoyment, rather than exams or competitions. Having just celebrated their 10 year anniversary with a special production at The Hawth Theatre in Crawley, Kicks Dance are expanding rapidly across Sussex and Surrey and are always on the look out for new franchisees. With the business going from strength to strength, each week hundreds of children across West Sussex and Surrey fill the dance studios with fun and laughter. Amelia Whittaker, Owner Kicks Dance Horsham, said: “Kicks Dance is all about providing our little stars with the chance to sparkle, by developing their selfconfidence in a fun, friendly, feelgood environment. We’re thrilled to be nominated for this national award, which is testament to the fantastic work and energy of each and every one of our fabulous teachers, parents and of course, children.” Sue Lee, Managing Director for Morton Michel sent her congratulations: “Morton Michel is thrilled to sponsor the What’s On 4 Kids Awards for a second exciting year. We know just how dedicated, passionate and hardworking the people who make children’s activities possible are, and we are honoured to support these awards that shine a light on the very best. We

applaud all the finalists for making it to the final stages and we cannot wait to celebrate together at the ceremony. Congratulations from all of us at Morton Michel!” Nick Howe, Regional Enterprise Manager for NatWest Business Banking in London & South East, added: “At NatWest, we are keen to support growing businesses - the lifeblood of the UK economy - by being more than just a provider of financial services. We are delighted, therefore, to be the official hosts for the 13th National What’s On 4 Kids Awards! We congratulate all those many businesses through to this exciting final stage and can’t wait to welcome and celebrate those providers parents have voted the UK’s finest to our London Bishopsgate HQ.” What’s On 4 Managing Director Sam Willoughby concluded: “Each and every year, it’s a pleasure to welcome back so many activities, keen to be part of these National

publicly recognise and celebrate these activity providers in this way. Huge thank you to NatWest, Morton Michel, and all our sponsors and supporters, as well as the thousands of parent voters for being such a massive part of the What’s On 4 Kids Awards 2019”.

Oldest Jewellers in Horsham closes its doors after 138 years Watch and Clock maker in 1953, later managing the business before purchasing. John (Terry’s son) was involved in the business from a child and for many years, along with his wife Pauline, has continued to run the independent family business. A statement received by The District Post, read: “Trelfers have been proud to have served generations of families in Horsham. It has been an incredibly difficult decision, but it is the right one for John and Pauline to make now to enable them to retire. There is no definitive closing date, Trelfers Jewellers will continue to trade until all items of stock have been sold in the retirement sale. It is a genuine ‘Retirement Sale’ with no special purchases brought in, once an item is sold that is it.” The retirement sale began at 10am on Saturday (September 21) and sees all stock at reduced prices.

Last week, Trelfers Jewellers in East Street, Horsham announced that they will be closing their doors after 138 years in the town. Established in 1881 Trelfers Jewellers are the oldest Jewellers in Horsham, originally trading as

e m i T y t r a P s a m t s i r Ch Well, it’s almost that time of year again. Only seems like Summer was last week - literally. And, as per tradition, here is our annual feature on the best venues to hold your Christmas party this year. Whether it’s for an office do, or a party for friends and family, we have selected a range of our favourite pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels to hopefully give you a wide range of options when you decide to book the best party of the year. If you have been given the responsible task of booking your work’s do, there may be a few things you might want consider... Venue, location, entertainment and cost, are all details you will need to make sure fit with your guest list. Sounds like a daunting task right? Well, don’t despair, here are a few tips from our advertisers, Stevens Drake, on how to organise a Christmas do to remember: Who should you invite? When drawing up the invite list, you should aim to be as inclusive as possible. No one should feel left out. Remember to make an effort to invite those who are presently away from work, whether because of maternity leave, sickness or for any other reason. If staff are encouraged to invite

their partners along, allow for the prospect of unmarried couples and same-sex relationships. Where and when should you hold it? It is worth thinking carefully about the venue for your Christmas party. Is it accessible to all, including those with a disability? Can people get home easily? Choosing a venue that might encourage people to ‘drink and drive’ is clearly inadvisable. So consider whether you have good public transport links or ready access to taxis. What should you do? Consider how you make the party appealing to all. Organising an event solely based around the consumption of large quantities of alcohol will no doubt please some of your staff, but it could well be a turn-off for others. In particular, be sensitive to the religious and other beliefs of your staff; make sure that there are plenty of nonalcoholic drinks and that the food allows for a vegetarian option. What about the entertainment? Be careful about the speakers or entertainers that you choose to use. There is a very well known Employment Tribunal case that arose out of the booking of the ‘stand-up comedian’ Bernard Manning. You can probably guess what went wrong there! What should you talk about? When a lot of alcohol has been consumed, people become less

inhibited and more likely to say (or do) precisely what is on their mind. As a result, the risk of discrimination and harassment claims rears its ugly head. So make sure that people understand that this is a work event and a level of professionalism is still required. Oh, and if you are the boss, remember that alcohol and conversions about pay rises don’t mix! The morning after the night before Make sure that people know if

they are required to be in work the day after the Christmas party. If they phone in sick, carefully consider whether it is genuine sickness or the result of over-indulgence. Then consider whether disciplinary action is required. Do your policies need to be given the ‘once-over’? I wouldn’t suggest that you need a policy specifically to cover your Christmas party. But it is worth considering whether your existing policies on conduct, harassment and the like are clear about what is

expected of people in this context. If not, now is the time to get your house in order. Oh, and make sure you have fun Finally, and before I begin to sound too much like the legal equivalent of the ‘Grinch’, the Christmas party is a chance to come together, celebrate a successful year and thank your colleagues for their efforts. It is also an opportunity to have fun. So having taken some sensible precautions, relax, unwind and enjoy yourself. You deserve it!

The Hawth Studio plays host to blues from both sides of the Atlantic, with a line up of the some of the best musicians around that will delight everyone who has come to know The Hawth as the place for great Blues. On Friday 4 October the Will Wilde Band kick off a season of blues. Wilde’s hard-edged harmonica steals the spotlight from the traditional rock guitar, with a sound that owes as much to Jimmy Page or Ritchie Blackmore as it does to Sonny Boy Williamson or Little Walter. Always pushing

forward, evolving and redefining his sound, Wilde is now ready to take the rock world by storm. A singer, songwriter, acoustic fingerstyle and slide guitarist, Paul Cowley was originally inspired by the country blues of Lightnin Hopkins, Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy and others. He’ll be performing on Friday 18 October. Thursday 7 November sees Ian Siegal play Unplugged. The UK bluesman recently scooped Best Male Vocalist and Best Acoustic Artist in the UK Blues

John Kirkpatrick opens a kit bag of songs from the two World Wars in a programme that highlights two different kinds of material. As you’d expect, there’ll be a fair old smattering of the popular hits of the day - designed to keep the spirits high, to raise a smile, share a chorus, and provide a moment’s respite from the horrors on every side, and find the heart to keep going. And threaded through these selections, John will also give an airing to some of the songs sung on the Front Line by the service personnel themselves. You’ll hear how experiences on the front

were dealt with and described with great directness, wit, robust humour, and, occasionally, very fruity language! Following the huge and continuing success of Carolling & Crumpets – dealing with the songs and customs of Christmas and Midwinter – and The Victorian Farmer’s Year In Song – based on his appearances on the popular TV programme Victorian Farm – renowned folk singer, John Kirkpatrick, marshals his resources into a stirring new programme engagingly presented with his usual panache and energy. Producing an alarming amount of volume for one person, John

fills the room with music with a voice of great dynamic range and power, supported by his sparkling squeezebox playing. This is a heart-warming show, with occasional poignant moments in amongst the jolly choruses, celebrating the comradeship and spirit that allowed those previous generations to Keep Smiling Through. Performance: Thursday 17 October 7.45pm, The Hawth Studio Crawley. Tickets: £16, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth. co.uk

Awards - adding to a long list of previous accolades. Come along and experience this unplugged performance of his songs with passion, humour, incendiary slide guitar and a soul-infused voice big enough to fell trees. Southern soul, Americana, gospel and blues - Mississippi native, Lisa Mills, takes the best of each of these genres and utterly transforms them. By taking all those ingredients and adding the occasional dollop of jazz inflection, Mills serves up her own savoury-sweet mix on Wednesday

13 November. On Friday 15 November, the Acoustic Blues Houseparty brings together three blues stars to deliver one unforgettable performance. This is a unique opportunity to see the great line-up of Eddie Martin (harmonica), Brooks Williams (bottleneck slide guitar) and Michael Roach (country blues guitar) together. One of the most original, innovative and exciting bands around, Spikedrivers’ combination of gutsy slide guitar, rock-solid bass, infectious grooves and highly distinctive vocals, creates a sound that is uniquely their own. A journey, from southern juke-joints and lazy front porches to the huge open spaces of dust bowls and railroad tracks disappearing into the distance – catch this Hawth favourite on Friday 13 December. Last but not least, Kent DuChaine is back creating that link with a bygone era of Robert Johnson and his travelling companion Johnny Shines, who used to hobo from town to town. Witness his gig on Friday 31 January and be transported back to the Delta of the 1930s. Tickets for each show are £16 (unreserved) and are available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth. co.uk

BBC Radio Sussex will be holding auditions to find the next generation of new radio stars at Horsham’s Capitol on Saturday 28 September.

The “New Voices” recruitment drive is part of the BBC’s biggest ever local talent search with open auditions set to take place across England and the Channel Islands.

BBC Local Radio is on the hunt for ordinary people with a love for their local area to take to the mic. Anyone over the age of 18 can audition and no previous experience is required. Hopefuls will have 60 seconds to impress a panel of judges. They could tell a story about something they care about, something local, something personal… anything as long as it’s unique. Judges at the Capitol in Horsham will include BBC Sussex Assistant Editor and Presenter Mark Carter. Mark said: “As judges, we’ll be looking for people who have the potential to contribute to existing shows, present their own one-off programme or even land a regular slot on a station. I can’t wait to see who comes along.” Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “The Council is delighted that BBC Radio Sussex has selected our very own Capitol theatre to host its auditions.

“We wish them the very best of luck with their search for local talent and would be thrilled if a Horsham District resident was chosen and given a break.” BBC England’s Head of Audio and Digital, Chris Burns, added: “BBC local radio has always been the place in the BBC where new talent can be found. Very few of today’s famous broadcasters haven’t done a stint at their local station. We are determined to discover the next generation of new radio talent. Our local teams speak to hundreds of people every day and know there are plenty of fascinating talkers out there who deserve more air time. So we’re opening our doors and inviting people to have a go at getting a slot on one of our stations.” There is no need to book in advance – just turn up anytime between 9.30am and 5.30pm. Tiddly Proms 2019 - Warm Weather, Cool Sounds Visitors to Leonardslee Gardens on 13 and 14 September enjoyed a new evening festival of Jazz, Big Band and Classical Music that the estate hosted for the first time. What certainly added to the enjoyment of the event was the great weather, with temperatures reaching a balmy 22C, before dipping later in the autumnal evenings. A top attraction was the Boutique Shopping Courtyard of fine wines, artisan spirits, craft beers, cocktails, global cuisine, art, fashion and lifestyle products. Entertainment was provided by a splendid harpist and a juggler. Visitors sampled Leonardslee’s own-label wine from its South African winery at Benguela Cove Lagoon. There was also gin and tonic crafted by Cabin Pressure Spirits and Silent Pool Distillers, real ale from Harvey’s, the Binary Botanical brew and cocktails from the Container Mixology Bar. The Friday evening kicked off with the cool, sophisticated sounds of the Ducie Jazz Quartet, described as a collective of fine Jazz musicians, creating the party mood. Harry’s Tricks played 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s popular music from Britain and America. They are led by the unique vocal and guitar style of Mike Potter (Mike the Mic), who combines the

influences of Fats Waller, Al Bowlly, Slim Gaillard and Billie Holiday, among others. The Tom Fitzpatrick Band played Big Band and Rat Pack Classics. Their extensive repertoire of legendary swing tunes interspersed with their versions of modern classics gave the band its distinctive sound. Finishing off the evening was the Pyromusical Fireworks Finale, the perfect end to a wonderful evening. On the Saturday, visitors enjoyed the Bernardi Music Group playing Charlie Parker tunes with strings. The Last Night of the Proms live on giant outdoor LED screen - was another highlight of the event. From orchestral dances and marches to songs and arias, Offenbach’s light-footed musical comedy to Verdi’s operatic tragedies, world premieres to traditional favourites, this year’s Last Night of the Proms was a spectacular climax. Visitors then enjoyed the spectacular Pyromusical Fireworks Finale. Watch out for other great events coming soon to Leonardslee. We run a full programme throughout the year, including music, food and drink, exhibitions, arts and participative events for everyone, 12 months of the year. Visit the Events page.

MILOŠ: The Voice of the Guitar coming to Horsham! Described as ‘classical music’s guitar hero’, guitarist MILOŠ is back with his fifth studio album and a UK tour including Horsham. For his performance next month at The Capitol, Horsham, he will be joined by members of the 12 Ensemble, in a programme showcasing the immense diversity of the guitar: from Spanish classics and Latin American rhythms to Bach, baroque dances and the Beatles: “Whether its Bach or McCartney, Schubert or Paul Simon, it’s all music to me and I love it.” Classic BRIT Award-winner MILOŠ is the world’s best-known classical guitarist and received unanimous acclaim for his 2016 Beatles album. After suffering from a serious hand injury at the peak of his career, he now makes a much-anticipated return to recording and performing. His new album, ‘Sound of Silence’, was released on Decca Classics on Friday 13 September and is inspired by his journey back to performing, featuring Miloš’ very own takes on songs by Portishead, Radiohead and Leonard Cohen, sitting alongside guitar pieces by Pujol and Tarrega: “This tour and the album are a very personal scrapbook of music

that will always have a special meaning to me – from Bach to the Beatles, Granados to Portishead, Piazzolla to Radiohead. It comes after one of the biggest challenges of my life – suffering from a serious physical injury and a mental burnout - this programme is a musical reflection on that time and on my long journey back to full health. It is the music I love above all else.” Miloš will be signing copies of his new album after the performance.

“The hottest guitarist in the world... The king of Aranjuez” The Sunday Times Nick Mowat, General Manager at The Capitol, said: “The show provides a wonderful opportunity to see this Internationally acclaimed virtuoso Guitarist in the intimate surroundings of The Capitol Horsham”. Performance: Saturday 5 October, The Capitol, Horsham. Tickets: Available online: www. thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220

Work started on new homes development in Billingshurst

Construction work is now underway at a new homes development within the new Amblehurst Green neighbourhood in Billingshurst. Bellway is building 18 new three, four and five-bedroom houses at The Courtyard, which lies on the eastern edge of the wider development, with the first plots due to be released for sale next month. The development has been designed to complement its rural surroundings, with houses set around two farmstead-style

courtyard spaces, while the homes themselves will include architectural features and materials to reflect agricultural buildings in the local area. Hanging tiles, sash windows and chimneys will help create a distinctive farmhouse look for key properties within the development. Plans for the overall Amblehurst Green development include a new primary school, creche, dentist’s surgery and an extension to the

existing doctors’ surgery nearby. The new neighbourhood will also bring investment of more than £1,720,000 in the local community through the planning agreement with the housebuilders. This includes £150,000 towards a new synthetic pitch surface at The Weald Community School, £243,506 for the expansion of the doctors’ surgery, £108,400 towards sustainable transport solutions and further funding towards recycling, the fire service and local nursery

education. Daniel Williamson, Head of Sales for Bellway South London, said: “The Courtyard is Bellway’s second development in the new Amblehurst Green community, providing further much-needed new homes in Billingshurst. “This development comprises 18 new homes all centred around two communal courtyards, which we hope will assist in creating a close, friendly community. “The range of three, four and five-bedroom houses have been designed with families in mind. With a new primary school and creche planned at Amblehurst Green, The Courtyard is well placed to appeal to people with young children, with easy access to the wider development and the centre of Billingshurst. “With a limited amount of homes available, I’d recommend signing up to the mailing list on our website for more information on the development and its launch.” The Courtyard is Bellway’s second development in Billingshurst. The housebuilder is also building two, three, four and five-bedroom homes at Amblehurst Green, off East Street. There’s a choice of three, four and five-bedroom designs currently available to reserve, with prices currently starting from £370,000. Another excellent Horsham win delights Coach Stocker

Saturday September 21 – RFU London 1 South League Honourable Artillery Company 26 43 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s back to back win confirmed that they have quickly adjusted to the faster, more intense level of play following their promotion to the London 1 South League. Against an experienced HAC side enduring a tricky start to the season, Horsham created strong early pressure, earning a penalty kicked home by Joe Wilde. HAC, though, responded positively with a converted try, but Horsham fought back immediately, with a penalty culminating with a gather by Declan Nwachukwu,

who got over in the corner, Joe Wilde’s successful conversion giving the Green & White a 10-7 lead just past the mid way point of the first half. Nwachukwu soon motored through for his second try, Wilde maximising from out wide before kicking another penalty. Again, HAC retaliated, with an unconverted try right on half time, but with a 20-12 advantage, Horsham were happier at the break. Horsham resumed in similar vein, with a series of drives for the line, rewarded by another try, Finlay Hillicks bursting through the defence to score under the posts. Although the kick was easier than Wilde’s previous conversions, it went begging, but he promptly made amends by slotting home a penalty. As before, HAC bounced back with

a converted try of their own, but Horsham were far from done, Nwachukwu proving that he is equally capable of renewing his taste for a hat trick in the upper echelon, notching up a bonus point in the process, Wilde increasing Horsham’s lead with a penalty. Yet, there was still time for HAC to post another converted try, but it was little more than a consolation when Jordan Bell launched a perfectly weighted crossfield kick for Mike Watts to add Horsham’s fifth try, Wilde adding the extras. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker praised the Green & White’s most complete performance to date, adding: “The speed that the guys are learning at is exceptional – testament to their hard work on the training pitch and their hunger to play. HAC is a tough place to visit, but we took control from the start and got the rewards.” He continued: “With this quality of possession we could get our runners carrying well and crossing the gain line regularly, with our young backs dictating both field position and tempo.” With such an outstanding team performance there were a number of candidates for the Man of the Match award, but Finn Hillicks received the accolade for “his work under the high ball, threats when carrying and ability to get over the gain line – capped off with a fine try.” On Saturday, hoping to build on their excellent start to the season, Horsham are back for another stern test – against Cobham

Horsham Ladies gain further experience at Gravesend Sunday September 22nd Gravesend Ladies 49 0 Horsham Rugby Richard Ordidge On a glorious Sunday afternoon Horsham Ladies travelled the 41 miles to take on the recently re-formed Gravesend Rugby Club Ladies team, in their second preseason friendly. Cheered onto the pitch by a large local support, interspersed by some of the Horsham faithful, both teams looked to run the ball early. It was apparent from early in the first quarter that Gravesend’s superior handling was going to be the difference between the two committed teams. Gravesend managed to run in 4 tries in the first quarter, due to a mixture of good handling, incisive running, and some indifferent tackling form the Horsham Ladies. That said some excellent tackles from Horsham prevented further scores. The second quarter was interspersed by a series of scrummages, due to handling errors by both sides, the Horsham Ladies, held

their own in the main against a much bigger pack. It was at this point in the game that the combination of tough tackling and a very hard surface began to take its toll. Gravesend managed to cross the Horsham line on 3 occasions, to give a half time score of 37-0. Multiple changes had taken place by the time the teams turned around and Horsham came out of the blocks fast, coming very close to scoring, only to turn the ball over, with the Gravesend line at their mercy. A much improved quarter, was punctuated with more injuries, which Gravesend capitalised upon. 2 tries in the 3rd quarter, was a little harsh on the visitors. At the end of the 3rd quarter, it was decided that the final whistle should be blown, all Horsham replacements had been used, and it was felt neither team would benefit from playing on with reduced teams. The final score was Gravesend 49 Horsham 0. The result was fair, Gravesend clearly had experienced players in their ranks, but the whole of the Horsham team stuck to their task and deserve credit for their endeavours.

Missed chances expel Horsham from FA Cup

Saturday September 21 – FA Cup Second Qualifying Round Horsham 0 2 Dartford Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Although Dartford are in the league above – the Conference South - albeit in the lower reaches, for much of this game Horsham looked the better side and created more chances. But, goals count and Dartford converted two of their limited opportunities to leave Horsham’s Camping World Stadium with a passage into the next round, amid Horsham frustration over what could – and should – have been. In the sweltering opening exchanges, watched by over 900 spectators, Charlie Harris set up the ball but blasted wide, before Horsham earned the first of their nine corners. Then, Harvey

Sparks and Chris Smith combined but the ball went straight to visiting keeper Mark Smith, who then had to dive to keep out another of his namesake’s attempts. This was followed by Joe Shelley hitting the post from a corner, before Harris’ shot was somehow averted. A pinpoint free kick then found Chris Smith, but he went for power, not placement and was thwarted by a good reaction save. Next, Sparks supplied Lee Harding, but again Dartford cleared, Josh Hill heading off the line. Charlie Sheringham, son of the legendary England striker, had a golden opportunity mid way through the half but missed out. Horsham, though, had the upper hand, but failed to take advantage, notably when Lea Dawson’s header was diverted by the keeper, and when the Hornets conceded two free kicks they suddenly found them-

selves under the cosh for the first time. The second set piece was headed off for a corner, which Hill nodded to the feet of Darren McQueen to volley past Horsham keeper Josh James on his first appearance of the season, Dartford going to the break one up. Sheringham was soon in action on the resumption, but in a one on one he tamely tapped the ball to James. After Harris’ long range blast went well askew, Harding induced another good save from the impressive Mark Smith, with Horsham skipper Will Miles exhorting: “Come on boys – keep going!” Four Horsham corners followed, from the last of which Chris Smith stabbed wide. Further Horsham chances came and went, however, they were often giving the ball away, with a succession of long kicks culminating with the opposition in the absence of more controlled build ups. Dartford then had three corners in quick succession, ahead of a cross just evading sub Kieron Pamment, whose subsequent effort was deflected. With time fast evaporating, a goal mouth scramble ended in Mark Smith’s grasp, until, with action switching to the other end, Dartford twisted the knife, Luke Allen latching onto a loose ball to bury it into the top corner, heralding the full time whistle, ending Horsham’s dream of prolonging their FA Cup run. Given their higher status, Dartford would have been expected to win, but a shock result had been a distinct possibility. On Saturday Horsham return to the league with a visit to Cheshunt.

YMCA cup hopes over after Steyning defeat Tuesday September 17– Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup – Round 2 Steyning Town 4 0 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA were well beaten at the Birchwood Ground at the Shooting Field by a strong second half performance from Steyning Town, upper table opposition in the Southern Combination League Premier Division. In the space of less than three weeks YM have been knocked out of the Royal Ulster Rifles Cup, the FA Cup and, at Steyning, the Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup. Giving priority to their league campaign, YM fielded an experimental side, but they were still very much in the game at the end of the closely fought first half with a single goal from Grant

Radmore, after he accepted Jamie Weston’s pass, the only separation between the sides, YM’s subsequent promising strike being safely averted by Banasco in the Steyning goal.

The second half was, though, a different story with Radmore supplying Tiago Andrade for a well crafted close quarter goal before

completing his hat trick with an outstanding individual effort in the 57th minute, when he ran through and blasted it home, before completing his hat trick in the 80th. YM Manager Peter Buckland had no option other than to conceded that YM were beaten by the better side on the night, saying; “With no points at stake, I decided to take the opportunity to experiment with the team format and pattern of play. Unfortunately that failed miserably, but it did show us who can play where – and who can’t – which was useful in view of our current injury situation. Steyning moved the ball quicker and worked harder. With the benefit of hindsight, perhaps I should have stayed with our usual formation, but if you don’t try things you’ll never know.” Hoping that their injury situation will improve, YM will now channel their energy into their league campaign.

Honours even when floodlight failure triggers rematch Tuesday September 17 – Royal Ulster Rifles Charity Cup Broadbridge Heath 2 2 Crawley Down Gatwick Football- MATCH ABANDONED Martin Read - Sports Reporter After beating Crawley Down Gatwick 2-1 at their Hophurst Lane Haven Centre ground in the league on the late August Bank Holiday Monday, Broadbridge Heath welcomed them to the Countryside Stadium for a Royal Ulster Rifles Charity Cup tie, but the game ended in frustration for both sides, the floodlights failing in extra time. Work commitments had prevented Ollie Joells from playing and delayed Rob Godfrey’s arrival. And, when Tim Cook was injured in the pre match warm up, the signs were nor encouraging for Heath. Yet, Heath opened the scoring when Robinson’s cross was shelled by Sam Smith in the CDG goal, Max Howell gleefully taking advantage. Heath continued to create opportunities while keeping CDG subdued, but Jamie Taylor fired wide and Cameron Watts’ attempt was saved by Smith. Then, after 30 minutes, a Heath attack culminated in a quick throw for the visitors and with Martyn Flack stranded upfield Heath failed to cover the run of ex Bear Michael Wood, and he drove clear to give Heath keeper Alfie Hadfield no chance on his first team debut.

CDG then enjoyed their best period of the game, with the Bears kept on the defensive for much of the remainder of the first half, the sides going into the break with the score one apiece. The arrival of Rob Godfrey enabled Manager Steve Painter to use him to reshape the midfield, which immediately had the desired effect with Heath back on the front foot and pressing the opposition deep into their half. This paid dividends, when, after a succession of free kicks, Tom Howard Bold’s dipping delivery was met at the back post by Alfie Jones to regain the lead for Heath. With Hadfield now virtually a spectator, Heath looked untroubled – until a seemingly innocuous ball into the box got through to the unmarked Wood, who hit the target, equalising from 15 yards. Heath went straight back on the attack and Smith had to pull off two fantastic close range saves from Taylor and George Cousins before Godfrey’s volley went inches wide. However, with no further goals the game went into extra time and after 103 minutes with Taylor in a promising position, the stadium was plunged into darkness with the lights refusing to come back on, heralding a rematch between the two old rivals on Saturday October 12th, a spare date in the fixture list, Heath reverting to league action in the meantime.

Depleted Broadbridge Heath slip to 7th at Trafalgar Ground Saturday September 21 - Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Newhaven 2 0 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After an excellent start to their season moving them up to third in the table Broadbridge Heath came unstuck at Newhaven last Saturday, when hit by last minute drop outs and injuries which left them with only two fit players on the bench. Austin Okolo made a hasty long trip down from London and 17 year old Michael Bold joined him in coming on to make their first team league debuts. Heath’s extensive non availability list included Marlon Maxwell, Scott Weller, Martyn Flack and Renato Carvalho, all injured and Max Howell was forced to withdraw after a pre match fitness test, to be replaced by Cameron Maxwell who had played 90 minutes for the Under 23s the night before. But, the game could have taken a very different turn when after one minute Andy Waddingham robbed a Newhaven defender and was clean in on goal. Keeper Buss narrowed the angle, and Jamie Taylor was unmarked in front of goal, but unfortunately Waddingham opted to shoot and Buss saved with his foot. The rest of the half was a stop start affair with any flowing football hindered by the hard and bumpy pitch, like many in need of rain. Newhaven, though, gradually took the ascendency and Alfie Hadfield in the Heath goal had to make excellent saves to keep Heath on terms. However, when Heath were slow to close down a second ball and play

was switched to the Newhaven left flank, Jones was unable to stop the cross and a header from an unmarked home player was tipped onto the bar by Hadfield only to rebound into the net off Josh Tuck, the own goal giving Newhaven a 1-0 advantage at the break. Heath came back out determined to take something from the game but could never get going and as frustration set in they lost shape and Hadfield was again called into action, keeping Newhaven at bay - until he had no chance when the Bear’s midfield and defence left Lukas Franzen-Jones in open territory to smash the ball home, giving Newhaven a deserved 2-0 lead. The introduction of Okolo and Bold almost had the desired impact for Heath, who at last started to push the home side back. Bold put Jamie Taylor through, but the experienced marksman could only hit the side netting and Okolo had a thundering header cleared of the line, but Heath had not done enough over the 90 minutes to take anything from the game, Assistant Manager Sam Chapman saying: “Afterwards, more players than I can ever remember put their hand up to sub- standard performances with perhaps only Hadfield coming out with credit in only his second appearance. With no mid week match the Bears will be anxious to get back on the training ground and get this performance out of their system.” On Saturday 14th placed Eastbourne United visit the Countryside Stadium, before, in a cup encounter, Heath entertain Mile Oak on Tuesday (October 1st).

Opportunity to hear and discuss local cycling plans Cycling Martin Read - Sports Reporter The Horsham District Cycling Forum exists to make cycling safe, convenient and attractive for everyone, and they have been working hard with Horsham District Council, West Sussex County Council, and a number of other organisations accordingly. HDCF Secretary Peter Silburn comments: “We’re pleased that West Sussex has finally published its county-wide Cycling Design Guide. There is now a clear vision of what local planning authorities should expect of developers. The Guide, specifically written for West Sussex, is for Local Planning Authorities who consult WSCC for advice on any road and transport issues that affect proposals submitted for planning permission.” The Guide’s foreward states: ‘West Sussex County Council aims to make walking and cycling a central part of transport, planning, health and clean air strategies….. by working together with West Sussex’s Local Planning

Authorities to ensure walking and cycling considerations are designed into masterplans and development designs from the outset. The Council recognises that good highway design, which prioritises and creates dedicated space for cycling and walking, will significantly contribute to: improving people’s health and wellbeing, improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists, reducing congestion, improving air quality, boosting the local economy, and creating attractive environments where people wish to live.’ The aim is to make cycling the natural choice for more journeys, giving priority to pedestrians and cycle movements, while addressing the needs of people with disabilities and reduced mobility, and creating safe, secure and attractive places. In the Guide, new developments are described as ‘a blank canvas with the opportunity to create ideal conditions for cycling.’ Connectivity and infrastructure with green corridors, separation with cycle lanes, paying special

attention to crossings, junctions and roundabouts, with dropped kerbs and better signage are also important issues. The Guide includes case studies, advice and examples of improved designs and can be viewed here: https:// www.westsussex.gov.uk/media/13164/cycling_design_guide. pdf The AGM of the Horsham District Cycle Forum takes place on Tuesday (October 1st) at 7:30pm in County Hall North, WSCC, Parkside, Chart Way, Horsham, Peter Silburn adding: “We have lots to discuss, including HDC’s long-term plan to develop a cycle network for Horsham and an update on the town centre contraflow scheme. We really value as much input as possible, so please do join us! (Please enter by the side entrance. There is covered cycle parking available.)” The agenda also includes items on the Warnham Cycle Route, the North of Horsham Cycling Strategy, the Novartis Development, Comptons Lane and Horsham Golf Club.

prizes! The Half Marathon course on closed roads, crosses beautiful undulating countryside, passing through Christ’s Hospital School, usually with the great spectacle of the magnificent school marching band enlivening and encouraging participants. As last year - when the huge community run saw over 2,000 runners registered amid support from the whole village – the Half Marathon starts at 10 am – with the 10K race, setting off at 10.20am, also going through the school grounds, with the last km to the tape down hill. Every runner receives a goody bag and a medal with prize money of £250 for both male and female winners and additional awards for places, the best team, record breakers and the entertaining fancy dress. This year the Committee is very keen to make the 37th Half Marathon, and 10K race even better than ever, encouraging racers to enter at the earliest opportunity. The event is organized and run entirely by volunteers and since it began in 1982, this unique village occasion has raised a huge amount of money – this year’s chosen charity again being the wonderful St Catherine’s Hospice. Race Director Vernon Jennings tells us: “We are extremely

proud of what we have been able to achieve since the first Half Marathon – each year the event gets bigger with more runners and spectators! St Catherine’s Hospice do such great work, being dedicated to providing specialised end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers - and we are also able to contribute to the various local and junior organisations, societies and clubs that help us organise the event on the day.” There will be food stalls, bands playing around the course and on the green, pre race musical warm ups by two of Bluecoat Sports’ fitness instructors for all the runners, and, among other attractions, there will be a fun fair, and ice creams aplenty - all guaranteeing a cracking atmosphere for the entire family. Participants and spectators are advised to arrive early! For more information on the always well organised event – including the online booking facility - see http://www.barnsgreen-half.org.uk and be sure to pick up a copy of the District Post October 4th edition, which will showcase both runs with results and stunning photographs. Roffey young cricketers revel in their awards night Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey Cricket Club feeder sides have had a remarkable season, with the 2nd and 3rd XIs gaining promotion and the 4th team narrowly missing out on moving up a league. This achievement was marked by a number of stellar performances by the talent of up and coming boys and girls coming to the fore, recognised in the awards to emerging players in a special evening at the Club, celebrated by their families and Team Managers Dyan Drury, Josh Buttle and Ben Embling. For the Under 9s, Joe Berry won the batting prize, with Eliza Harris picking up the bowling award. In the U13 category Lewis Shivnarain (pictured with proud father Simon) was the star batsman, while Stan Berry and Hayden Webb shared the bowling commendation. Tyler Abra-

hams was the U14 batsman of the season, Joe Higgins gaining the bowling citation. And, in the U15 group Lewis Shivnarain’s all round prowess was marked with his bowling award and Huda Rehman took the top batting honour. The ceremony was rounded off with special presentations to William Taylor as Colt Team Player of the Year and Regina Suddahazai – the first girl to win the Colt of the Year Award “for her positive contribution with the bat and ball for every team she played for – including the Men’s 4th Team – and always having a smile on her face!” With Roffey 1st XI being crowned Sussex Premier League Champions for the fifth time in six years, coupled with the emergence of the impressive budding young players, the future of Roffey Cricket Club looks bright and assured.
