EDITOR’S NOTE
•Our sunlight hours continue to stretch later and later this month as we approach Summer Solstice. June 21 will be the longest day of the year.
I welcome these longer stretches of daylight.
I can almost trick myself into believing I have more time.
Bedtime gets later for my daughters and I savor the extra minutes we get together.
I took a photo this month, at Karim Abou Najm’s memorial that broke me: a note from his mother. A mother who had her son brutally taken, way too early. “He was the light that graced this world,” she wrote.
In Davis this month, we’re yearning for peace. For togetherness. For empathy.
I first saw artist Pete Scully’s cover art on Instagram. His watercolors of Compassion Bench are moving, and I hope you find as much comfort in his scenes of Davis as I have.
Each June we celebrate Pride and this year, the Davis Phoenix Coalition has a two-day celebration planned with one focus: eliminating hate. A tall order this year, organizers said. Expect added security measures, but also so much fun supporting our LGBTQ+ family. I’m looking forward to the skate party.

I’m also so thrilled to tell you about a new completely free program that provides postpartum support to new mothers right here in Yolo County: a free in-home nurse visit, connections with mental health support, lactation support and more.

Babies need support. New parents need support. I’m so pleased there’s a program offering that here in our neighborhoods, and I can’t wait to learn about how much Welcome Baby accomplishes. Read more about their work on page 18.

EMPATHY IN DAVIS
REMEMBERING DAVID BREAUX AND KARIM ABOU NAJM

DAVID BREAUX
The Compassion Bench in Davis now serves as a permanent reminder of the work David Breaux spent his life dedicated to. As Davis’ “Compassion Guy”, Breaux was often found on this corner near Central Park engaging neighbors in conversation about their definition of compassion.

A community celebration of life will be held for David at the Compassion Bench June 3 at 1p.
“If I’m ever harmed and unable to speak for myself, forgive the perpetrator and help others forgive that person,” David said in a text message to his sister in 2012. “Today while at the bench in Davis I experienced someone who seemed to want to hurt me. I’m noticing incidents here in this town of people actively opposed to who I am and what I do. Forgive.”
KARIM ABOU NAJM
Amemorial for 20-year-old Karim Abou Najm at Sycamore Park collected dozens of flowers and notes, all of which were read by his family.
Najm moved to Davis with his family in 2018. He was just six-weeks away from graduating from UCD with a bachelor’s in computer science with honors.
The Karim Majdi Abou Najm Memorial Undergraduate Student Research Award fund has been established to provide stipends to undergraduate UC Davis students doing research.
A self-paced Day of Remembrance is scheduled for June 1. Visit tinyurl.com/june1remembrance for map and details.
“I want this to be his memory: a bundle of energy, a bundle of positivity,” Karim’s father told KCRA. “Someone who was full of ambition, proud of his roots, who just wanted to make this world a better place.”
Community Supports Surviving Stabbing Victim
Kimberlee Guillroy was the third victim in a series of brutal stabbing attacks. As Kimberlee recovers, neighbors are offering support during this difficult time. A GoFundMe has been created, with 100% of the funds going to medical bills and securing permanent housing for Kimberlee.
“Medical bills and expenses are likely to pile up, and we are hoping to raise funds to help ease her financial burden and allow her to focus on her recovery, as well as assist with helping her pay for a permanent residence,” organizer Brandy Hartman wrote on the page. “Kimberlee has become a beloved member of the community, and we want to show her that she is not alone in this fight.”

When the Good Ones Go
When the good ones go, their light within us does not dim forever. Instead the opposite occurs.
Something brighter comes to illuminate our gestures, our ways of seeing, and it stays gentling worn hearts.
It was not there before: this warm glimmer, this true knowing.
They leave something in us to mark their places like pages in favorite books, the good ones do, and we feel it.

We are connected still.
—Jean BiegunTHE DIRT is committed to furthering the reach of our local artists’ work and will publish one work of poetry each month in our print issue and online. Works may be submitted via email to hanna@thedirt.online with the subject line: poetry.

DAVIS MUSIC

Edward Bennett, for The Dirt
The Davis Music Fest has grown significantly over the past 13-years. Music lovers are in for a treat with huge acts blowing through this quaint town like a pop-up SXSW. The roster reads like a veritable who’s-who of Pitchfork & Indie darlings across so many genres. There’s literally something for everyone across the 3-day event. Here’s what we’re looking forward to.

June 16—18!
FEST 2023
John Vanderslice is a studio genius out of S.F. with strong pop sensibilities, a dizzying array of influences, and crushing lyrical chops on par with Stephen Merritt (of the Magnetic Fields). I’ve seen him rock & pop across the U.S. and his shows are consistently intimate no matter how large or open-air the performance. He recently jumped a groove to plumb JPEGMAFIA and Tierra Whack, so his performance is sure to shake.
In 2020 Iggy Pop said, “Death Valley Girls are a gift to the world.” The quartet of punk rock & roll psychedelic mystics from Southern Ca. underscored that claim with their 2023 release of Islands In the Sky. The unflagging advocates of self-worth pound out addictive rock while diving into holographic duality wherein we are all just simulations.

French Cassettes are indie rock + sunshine pop; emollient music to lose a lazy afternoon to through headphones or Marshall stacks. They veer out from the adjacent sounds of John Vanderslice, Sparklehorse, and Cracker into heady space fuzz bookended by bags full of acoustic accouterments.

Kaz Mirblouk is psych rock diving into sounds of Hooverii and a curious sonic bridge between elements of early Jesus & the Mary Chain and Gish-era Smashing Pumpkins.
Fashionista Boyfriend is a Sacramento vaporwave pop outfit that slides between M83 and Junobot. Lush synths and foggy drum machines wander through saturated pads and wavering vocals.
Maita is a prolific group out from Oregon that probes a triangle between Weezer, Lana Del Rey, and The Wild Reeds. Soaring female lyrical composition and delivery with aggressive fingerstyle guitar and sashaying angular distortion that gels … tk
Spacewalker is a funktronic artist from Sacramento. Think minimalist Salt-N-Peppa crossed with Bootsy Collins, but with more cowbell and unhinged drum machines. I cannot wait to hear them live.

Josiah Johnson just wow. Josiah parted ways with his old band, The Head and the Heart, to birth something beautiful in his heart-melting 2022
Wolf Jett cranks cosmic mountain music aimed at catharsis; rising to the joy of letting go in an age of too much let gone.

“Every Feeling on a Loop.” Josiah has been tight-lipped about his work since the release, but he has been drilling into soul and post-punk and experimenting with instrumentation that is refreshingly difficult to pinpoint. Spiritualized’s ‘Ladies & Gentlemen we are Floating in Space’, but Josiah carves out new territory for himself while leaving the past behind.

CELEBRATE
PRIDE IN DAVIS
The pride sentiment is stronger than ever this year, as members of the Davis Phoenix Coalition work to eliminate hate.
It’s been a heavy lift, as organized groups have threatened trans youth, protested drag shows, and fought to ban books at our local libraries.
The team is more determined than ever to offer space for the community to come together for healing and joy— and to celebrate diversity.
Davis Pride Festival does just that. Featuring two stages with amazing entertainment (25 of the
best entertainers from around the country!), exhibits, cultural presentations, delicious food, and many of your closest friends, the Pride Festival is free and open to everyone with a positive heart and loving mind.
“Pride is our time to be positive in a world full of negativity,” Davis Pride Director Sandré Henriquez Nelson said.
With extra security measures this year, organizers say neighbors can expect a safe celebration.
“We have been working with law enforcement agencies, community
groups and a security team for several months to ensure the safety of Davis Pride,” Henriquez Nelson said. “In light of the recent crimes, we plan to add even more security. We look forward to coming together as a community.”
Proceeds from Davis Pride events support the coalition’s antiracism and anti-bullying campaigns, LGBTQ+ youths and their families, and outreach with local police departments, churches and schools. Visit davisphoenixco.org learn more and donate.

Welcome Baby paves the way to accessible postpartum support

free postpartum care
Isabella Holmes, for The DirtThe glaring gaps in reproductive health care in the U.S. are palpable, and disproportionately impact lower income and marginalized groups. Welcome Baby is a new program that objects to this lack of care and uses their funding to make postpartum care free and accessible to all birthing parents in Yolo County.
Welcome Baby provides free postpartum care, including an in-home visit with a registered nurse, and up to two more visits with a Family Support Specialist. The program is available to Yolo County residents with public health care (MediCal, Partnership, MCAP) or residents who are uninsured. Welcome Baby will
never ask for immigration status.
“Welcome Baby nurses are catching life-threatening conditions—saving lives,” Sarah Hartman, Ph.D. told The Dirt. “And making sure that families are connected to a medical home.”
Hartman is the Systems Integration and Implementation Officer at First 5
Yolo. Welcome Baby is a collaboration between First 5 Yolo, CommuniCare, and Yolo County Children’s Alliance.
The in-home visit—which happens within the first two weeks of returning from the hospital— is comprehensive to say the least. Families can expect detailed clinical assessments of both parent and baby, mental health assessments, breastfeeding support and referrals, and health education.
“The postpartum period is already such a vulnerable time,” Hartman said.
”And when the isolation and stress that came with the Pandemic was added, the need for more accessible care was clear.”
There’s a major focus on supporting mental health. The Welcome Baby program was created during the Pandemic, when the number of parents experiencing postpartum depression and anxiety was climbing.
“There were very serious negative effects of the pandemic on pregnant persons that really led to a decline in maternal health,” Hartman said. “Postpartum depression and anxiety were rising, health related issues such as preterm birth were increasing, and people were delaying their prenatal care.”

First 5 used American Rescue Plan relief aid to fund this project. A special aspect of Welcome Baby is the connection to community resources. Integrating health and social services allows Welcome Baby s to provide truly holistic care for families.

“If the family has certain needs, nurses can assess for that and connect them to community support,” Hartman said. “If the family is experiencing barriers to transportation, food, stable housing, etc., Welcome Baby links them to other community resources that can help.”
Within 30 days of the nurse visit, they are set up with a support system for their individualized needs. If a parent feels they are showing signs of postpartum depression, they get help connecting with behavioral health resources.
“Parents are really in need of postpartum support and care,” Hartman said. “Getting in early and immediately providing connection to the family is critical to the long-term health of both the birthing parent and the baby.”
Welcome Baby nurses are catching lifethreatening conditions— saving lives. … And making sure that families are connected to a medical home.
“A Really Cool Job”

On a train trip to Trenton from Penn Station, New York Red cap, white jacket
He rolls his silver metal cart with goodies down the aisle, stopping for customers. Breakfast or a snack in mid-morning on this travel adventure.
Milk and soda in the ice below

Everything fitting just fine.
He reaches down smoothly for the drinks. Big smile as he hands me pound cake and a small container of milk.
Mom gives him money.
The man working on the railroad has such a cool job, making people happy.
I’d love to help if he’d let me.
SARAH HARTMAN, PH.D.I could get a uniform like his. I could walk in front and call out, “Food and beverages, food and beverages”
I’ll see him again on the train ride home.
