EDITOR’S NOTE
•It’s difficult for me to rattle on about the themes of this month and there are so many that deserve being fawned over— when all I want to use this space for (as an editor, as a parent) is to demand safety measures be put in place immediately at our undersiege schools.
I would love to talk about the dozens of author and artist speaking engagements this month. And the art shows? Some truly astounding experiences. It’s incredible what our local organizers are doing.

But I’m too anxious because today I received the sixth? seventh? alert of a bomb threat involving my daughter’s school.
The Zombie Bike Ride is bringing a whole Halloweekend of spooky activities, and thousands of visitors to Davis! It’s such a great excuse to dress up and bike with the fam or your besties.

But I’m worried about the schools where there are no fences, no security guards, no locked doors. And wondering: why isn’t more being done?
Avid Reader is saying what we all want to this month—support the library. They’re planning an awesome event with children’s authors Mac Barnett & Shawn Harris,
and a grown-up afterparty at Armadillo Music benefitting our local Friends of the Library.
Davis is for everyone. The Dirt stands with many other Davis institutions in saying we will not let threats of violence stop our support of our LGBTQ+ neighbors.
What if we could just all be nice to each other? I wouldn’t be agonizing over my wording as I beg for fences, that’s for sure.

COSTUME GUIDE 2023
Celebrating Halloween in Downtown Davis is one of the most exciting things about growing up in this City. Our local businesses pull together in a big way to create truly memorable experiences during Trick-or-Treat.

Choosing a Halloween costume can feel tricky, though. Maybe you have a kiddo who wholeheartedly changes their mind every single day. Or maybe you have a kiddo who wants to be a stick (please, please let them be the stick).
If your little ones are a little more open to suggestion this Halloween, we’ve teamed up with Avid & Co.—the toy store extension of Avid Reader—to share some favorite costumes on shelves this year.
• For sensory sensitive kids who may not like even the idea of a costume on their body, a proper sword and shield go a long way. Add a dragon head? So cute.
• A princess costume that feels like the real deal will live on as part of your child’s dress-up collection. e hoop skirts on many of their costume gowns this year add an extra element of magic to the occasion.
• For older children and tweens (and occasional moms!), a collection of jersey knit classic Disney princess dresses that pairs great with sneaks. ese are Disneyland-worthy and so comfortable.
• High end accessories go a long way. Avid & Co.’s selection of crowns and tiaras turn any out t into a legitimate occasion.
• Gender is a construct. Let your child pair a u y skirt with a construction hat.
• Support local businesses where you can; DIY or upcycle to supplement costume elements.

The Oldest Organization in Davis

* Dave Rosenberg has been a member of the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge since 2004. He has served four terms as Noble Grand of the Lodge, and currently is a Trustee of the Lodge. Rosenberg is a Yolo Superior Court Judge, and previously served as a Yolo County Supervisor and as Mayor of Davis.
In the heart of Downtown Davis stands a solid unassuming building at 415 Second Street that is owned and occupied by the oldest organization in Davis. That building is the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge Hall—and it happens to be the home of the oldest continually operating entity in Davis: the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge.
The Odd Fellows Lodge is a fraternal order that was chartered in 1870—more than 150 years ago. The fraternity is older than the University of California, and older even than the incorporation of the City of Davis. In 1870, there was no City of Davis. The area was known as “Davisville” and the Odd Fellows, at their inception, were identified as Yolo Lodge #169.
Today, they are known as the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge #169—chartered right after
San Luis Obispo #168 and right before Knights Ferry #170.
The Davis Odd Fellows Lodge has grown to almost 400 members—almost equally divided between men and women, and it has the largest membership of any Odd Fellows Lodge in the world—right here in little-old Davis. Members in the Davis Lodge range in age from 18 to 88.

The original home for the Odd Fellows in Davis was on G Street. Eventually, that G Street facility was sold to the Masonic Lodge, and through the generosity of an Odd Fellow who left a bequest in his will, the present Lodge Hall was built on Second Street in 1955.
If you walk, bike or drive past the Lodge today, you can’t miss it. The Odd Fellows Lodge Hall announces its presence with a large vertical neon sign, that is lit day and
night. The Lodge is occupied and used continuously.

The Davis Odd Fellows Lodge has some 70 committees, many of which provide community serving events including: Thursday Live! music at the Lodge, Second Sunday Bingo, the Zombie Bike Parade, A Taste of Davis, The Davis Chocolate Festival, the Davis Classic Film Festival, Breakfast with Santa, Breakfast with the Bunny, and more.
The Lodge also owns surrounding property and rents to tenants including Hunan Chinese Restaurant and Bar, Elite Property Management, a clothing store by the name of Treehouse Vintage, and a salon called The Refinery, as well as the food truck operation of Handheld Sweet and Savory Pies.

The fraternal motto of the Odd Fellows is “friendship, love, and truth.”

RECIPE: HALLOWEEN GRAVEYARD PASTA
A VEGGIE LOADED MAC & CHEESE
Come play with your food! We’re carving headstones on squash and making a veg-loaded halloween mac and cheese. It’s a happy cheesy pasta, packed with lots of roasted butternut squash—and big flavor. The pickled jalapeno brine contrasts with the richness of the cheese and adds so much. Salty, creamy, tangy, and playfully spooky for halloween.

30-Second Cooking Lesson: Carve gravestones out of squash and potatoes! Slice ¾-1” slabs and use a knife to round the tops of a few. Use a metal skewer as your chisel and carve RIP or other spooky sayings. To darken the letters, try rubbing a bit of cocoa powder or baking soda on the tip of your carving device. Roast with the other squash.
RECIPE
1 hour and 10 minutes, including inactive baking time • Serves 6
• 2 tbsp. olive oil + a little to oil the baking dish
• 1 butternut or 2 honeynut squashes (2-2½ lbs.), peeled, seeded (Cut half into ½” cubes; save the other half to carve into gravestones)
• 1½ tbsp. sea salt
• 2½ c. vegetable or chicken stock
• ¾ c. cream, half and half, or 1 (12 oz.) can evaporated milk
• ½ lb. curly pasta or macaroni

• 1 tsp. dijon mustard
• 8–16 oz. shredded gruyere or sharp white cheddar (or mix 50/50 with a melty cheese like fontina, divided)
• A few grinds of fresh ground pepper
• 1 tbsp. pickled jalapeno brine or 1 tsp. hot sauce
• 1 c. panko or fresh bread crumbs
1. Preheat oven to 450. Place all squash on lined baking sheet; toss with oil and 1 tsp. salt. Roast for 30 minutes.
2. 15 minutes later, start pasta. After
squash has roasted for 15 mins, add pasta, stock, cream, and sea salt to large, oven-safe skillet. Bring to a simmer, stir regularly. When pasta is done and liquid has come to a thin sauce, gradually stir in most shredded cheese and all mustard. Watch it, the sauce can quickly go from thin to thick quickly. If the pasta sauce seems a bit thick, stir in a few tbsp. water at a time to reach desired consistency. Stir in pickled jalapeno brine.
3. Pull the squash from the oven when tender; turn oven to broil. Fold in the cubes of roasted squash and sprinkle remaining cheese + bread crumbs over
top. Using a spoon, create space to plunge gravestones into pasta. Return pan to oven for 5-7 minutes to brown.
BONUS POINTS
Swap: replace or add some of the squash tombstones with peeled potatoes for color variation.
Add: Garnish with a sprinkle of rosemary and chile flakes. Boost veggies by adding 1-2 c. chopped cauliflower with the pasta, or add frozen peas / baby greens at the end.
Tip: Microwave whole squash for 1-2 minutes to make the skin easier to peel.

NEW GORMAN
Four Times the Space for Contemporary Native American Art
MUSEUM OPENS
Doors are open at the brand new Gorman Museum of Native American Art at UC Davis, a space that is much larger and much more easily accessible.
Perfect timing, as the Gorman Museum, unique in focusing on, exhibiting and collecting Native American art, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year—and as more people are becoming aware of the land they’re on.

“Land acknowledgement statements are being used more widely,” Veronica Passalacqua, Gorman Curator and Executive Director, told The Dirt. “Even though we’ve been around for 50 years, it’s really right now that we have a coalescence of acknowledging land and communities, and less represented artists.”
The new space has three galleries: one for temporary exhibits, one for displaying works from the Gorman’s collection on a rotational basis, and a third that offers visible storage, allowing guests access to stored collections. The Gorman is home to a collection of 2,250 artworks, most created since 1960, including paintings, ceramics, textiles and original prints.
The gift shop is a bit of a gallery in itself. Each artist with items on the shelves is part of a tribal nation of California.
Our mission has always been about showing works that enact and promote visual sovereignty.
The new museum design features 4,000 square feet of gallery space, nearly four times more than its former home in Hart Hall. The museum itself is a work of art, with a giant circular public sculpture at the entrance and an intentionally designed gift shop.
The entrance sculpture is a mesmerizingly intricate piece, based on Native American basketry designs and was created by Museum Director and professor in the Department of Native American Studies, Hulleah Tsinhnahjinnie.

Outside, the single-story museum is painted with bands of green representing tule grass, a once-common plant in California used by Native American people to make baskets, clothing, tents, houses, and boats.
“For people who haven’t been here before, we kind of want to surprise them,” Passalacqua said. “Our mission has always been about showing works that enact and promote visual sovereignty.
In the art world, solo exhibitions are how artists make a name for themselves. Since its founding in 1973, the Gorman Museum has shown work by a wide range of established and emerging artists, with 225 group and 88 solo exhibitions.
“Native artists, like all artists, need solo shows to advance their careers,” Passalacqua said.

Professor Tsinhnahjinnie spoke at the media preview of the new museum, sharing her own thoughts and feelings behind many of the artworks on display.
One, Continuum Basket by Gerald Clarke, Jr. was particularly poignant. The large-scale sculpture is made of a Cahuilla basket tray and individually crushed beer and soft drink cans.
“I love the cans, the basket, because it also addresses diabetes,” Tsinhnahjinnie
explained, “And what those cans have done to our people.”
e new museum space is located in the UC Davis Gateway along Old Davis Road. It’s steps away from the arboretum walking trail and has a large lot for parking.

e UC Davis Department of Native American Studies was founded in 1961, and is one of the oldest Native American studies programs. UC Davis is one of just three universities o ering a doctorate in Native American studies. e museum is named in honor of the late artist Carl Nelson Gorman, a founding faculty member.
e Gorman Museum’s opening exhibition “Contemporary California Native Art” will include about 40 works by 20 artists, all members of California tribes.

UC Davis is located on land that has for thousands of years been home to the Pawtin people.

Crows by Ann Privateer
As black as my boots
Take a ying south break
Crisscrossing in the sky above
Swooping down to land
Congregating on the top
Of old giant oak trees
Where they caw to each other eir laughing language
Makes me wonder
What they say
Zooming in for a feet rst
Landing then a symphony
Of uttering, will it be
A rest stop or an overnight?
