Remembrance Sunday this year falls on 12th November, when the nation remembers and honours those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.

Paddy and Roger Grimshaw from Tredington are going to host a Remembrance Concert in their barn on Saturday 18th November to raise money for the Poppy Appeal and to remember their friend Harry Robertson who was one of the longest-standing members of the Tewkesbury Royal British Legion (see 'What's on' for more information).

I know it's hard to believe but Christmas is just around the corner, so why not take a trip to one of the many fayres and festivals that are on and start your Christmas shopping early.

A Geek Abroad Having just returned from my travels over the pond, I was reminded of the Aldous Huxley quote, “To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries”. For I was travelling with a friend who had pre-judged the USA as somewhere he could never feel comfortable. He had images of log cabins and lone rangers (we were travelling to some quite ‘out there’ locations) and as a fellow geek, he thought he’d miss the ease of life at home. Nevertheless, he agreed to join me on a two-week road trip from the Canadian border, down through Washington and along the Oregon Coast to see if there was anything there that could change his mind.

The first wondrous piece of technology to report back on was, of course, the vehicle we used to cross the Atlantic.

I’m no fan of flying but the doubledeck A380 was a pleasant surprise.

I knew it would be huge but when boarding through three different gates it seemed colossal. With a bar and business area onboard the plane, this felt more like an oddly seated cruise-liner, than an economy form of transport. A simple but wonderful innovation is USB ports at your seat (to power your phone/iPad) as well as endless personal entertainment offered via the touchscreen. If you get a chance to fly one, use SeatGuru.com to find the best seat.

We did and row 81 is hard to beat.

After the flight itself, the next thing that strikes a geek on landing in the USA is the immigration process. In Vancouver, for a short stay before crossing into America proper, you’re not met with desks of stern faces at passport control, but by a maze of computers. Scanning your image as you wait, they work like the selfcheckouts at Sainsbury’s, only these ones decide if you’re allowed into the country. Top tip – fill out your online visa before you go (and use the Official ESTA Application Website, not the knock-offs which will scam you out of £50).

Beyond the airport, nothing says America quite like the cars. Ours was described as “compact” but the Chevrolet provided was anything but.

It’s common to have an automatic and you’ll be glad to know their roads and even parking spaces are much wider than ours. The only unusual thing for us techies? In Oregon at least, you can’t fill up yourself at the petrol station. Legally it’s done for you and it’s expected that you’ll pay up first. I guess not everywhere has modernized with technology.

American homes, of course, are quite something to behold. The focus and destination of our trip was a cabin on Cannon Beach. Movie fans amongst you will know the area from The Goonies and Twilight films. It’s certainly a beautiful part of the world and well worth the journey but we found it rather hard to actually leave the house and venture outside. Sure you’ve seen them on TV but the American kitchens with gigantic microwaves, waste disposal, automated ice and drinks coolers, certainly made for breakfast fun each day.

Luxury is more the norm in the USA. I know that’s a sweeping statement but the further we travelled, using everything from budget Motels to luxury chains, we found it common to have free coffee at every reception, valet parking in even the most unlikely of places and televisions the size of my wall here in Winchcombe.

Plus of course, cash was hardly ever seen, with everything dependent on a web booking and credit card deposit. Top tip – travelling this year and hate the thought of your card being cloned?

The final thing I wish I could bring home is something quite simple. Most bathrooms we used had two ceiling lamps. One, a standard long-life bulb, the other a heat-lamp. How simple is that? Step out of the shower and the room will already be warm.

I can’t comment on how much it might cost to run such a frivolity but it seems like a fair trade to me, pondering how long I might hold it before going to my frosty loo!

All in, of course, it wasn’t the technology that impressed my pal most, it was the people we encountered. Smiles aren’t rare in the USA. Winchcombe is a wonderful community but even we could probably enjoy an extra strangersmile from time to time. I promise that after a while it stops seeming scary!

Anyway, here I am back home and getting on with my work. I would blog about the laptops I used to keep up with my projects or the sim-card deals that kept me in phone range.

But I can’t. Because I turned them all off. We should probably all do that now and again!

French Omelette with Garlic Tomatoes Serves 1

Ready in 15 minutes

Eggs are the perfect fridge standby for a quick and filling supper. Here’s how to make a classic creamy French omelette for one in a few simple steps – the recipe can easily be doubled to serve two people.

Toss the tomatoes and garlic with the olive oil. Place on a foil-lined grill pan and cook under a medium heat for 4-5 minutes until just tender.

Ingredients: • • • • • • • •

8 cherry tomatoes, halved 2 tsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 large eggs 1tbsp milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper Large knob of butter Spinach and rocket leaves, to serve

Meanwhile, lightly beat the eggs and milk in a jug and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Heat the butter in a small omelette or non-stick frying pan until it is just foaming. Pour in the beaten eggs and stir gently with a fork, drawing the mixture in from the sides to the centre as it sets and letting the liquid egg run out to the sides.

When the omelette is just set, stop stirring and cook for a further 30 seconds to brown the underside (see tip). Place the grilled tomatoes on top of the omelette.

TIP

Take care not to overcook the omelette – keep the heat at medium and remove the pan from the heat when the top is still soft and creamy.

Slide the omelette onto a serving plate, tipping the pan to gently fold it over the tomatoes. Serve immediately with salad.

Winchcombe Christmas Festival celebrates all historic town has to offer Winchcombe’s annual Christmas Festival on Tuesday 5th December from 5.00pm until 8.00pm will open up the doors to the charming ancient town’s many independent shops, galleries, restaurants and eateries in a warm festive welcome.

The late-night Christmas shopping evening lights up the bustling town and its centuries-old architecture, creating a real festive treat offering an array of stalls and shops, festive food and entertainment.

It’s fast becoming a well-loved Cotswold Christmas tradition for families.

Around 40 stalls will take over North Street and Abbey Terrace, which will be closed to traffic for the evening, joining local shops opening late offering a seasonal selection of fine food and drink, locally made crafts and beautiful gifts galore.

Mercedes: Just What Do All Those Letters Mean?

I have heard tell that the way Mercedes names its products is a German state secret, known only to a chosen few and passed down to a successor in a ceremony conducted, behind closed doors, in a castle somewhere in Bavaria.

But now, having met my shadowy contact in a deserted underground car park, I think I understand just what those letters, stuck on the rear of their vehicles, mean.

Take the two-seater SLK. Those letters stand for “Sportlich, Leicht, Kurz”. In English that’s “Sporty, Light, Short”. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

So is the S Class a sporty car then? No - the S Class is a “Sonderklasse”, or special model.

K for Kurz (Short) is also used on their “Kompakt” models (some of which aren’t

short) and models that have turbo-charged engines, as that’s what a “Kompressor” is in Deutsch.

I’ll try another letter.

E should be easy (no pun). E is for Executive. You see lots of big Mercedes E Class cars. However, E also stands for “Einspritzing”. Not an iced fizzy wine drink, but fuel injection.

How about the letter G? In the 1970s, both dictators and film stars the world over were chauffeured around in the 600 Grosser Mercedes limousine. So G must mean “big, grosser limo”?

Right! But only if you are planning to drive your celeb off-road: G, also stands for “Geländewagen”, which is an all-terrain vehicle.

We come now to a truck Mercedes make called the UniMog…no, I’m not going to go there. I’m already confused.

Still none the wiser, perhaps I’d better try sneaking into that ceremony in the Bavarian castle…

Gloucestershire Writers Wow at Cheltenham Literature Festival Twelve, prize-winning Gloucestershire men and women delighted audiences on the last night of the 2017 Cheltenham Literature Festival.

Jim Moeller (Cirencester), Jeff Taylor (Eastleach), Iris Anne Lewis (Kempsford) and Cindy Moss (Tewkesbury).

The best of Gloucestershire Writers’ Network competition, read their work on the festival theme, ‘Who Do We Think We Are?’ alongside judges: Dr. Lania Knight, award-winning writer and senior lecturer in English and Creative Writing at University of Gloucestershire and acclaimed poet Roy McFarlane, formerly Poet in Residence at Starbucks and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

Frances March from Stroud won the poetry prize with her beautiful piece: ‘1956: Sheltered’ and the prose winner was Nastasya Parker from Dursley, with her moving short story: ‘The Maze’.

A Busy November

Despite the seasonal slowdown there are lots of jobs which, if done now, could end up saving you time and money later on - so here are the top November gardening tasks to get to grips with.

Hoe off weeds that are around now, as some might still set seed during mild, damp periods. Provided they have no seed pods their top-growth can safely be composted, but bin, burn or rot down fleshy weed roots to prevent them growing in the compost heap!

Cut back or pick off obviously diseased leaves and stems to neaten flower beds and borders, and remove some of the foliage that is dying back purely due to the time of year.

Leave some deteriorating but healthy foliage in place to provide protection for the crowns of more fragile plants.

Rabbits become more of a menace as natural food supplies reduce, so make sure that rabbit netting is not damaged and that trees, especially those that have been planted recently, are fitted with tree guards.

If there is a sizeable tree near your lawn, rake up fallen leaves on a regular basis to prevent damage to the grass beneath.

Trees, shrubs and climbers that have been planted recently may need protection from frost and cold winds over their first winter. Use a layer or two of horticultural fleece draped over the plant and pegged in place; it can be removed on warmer days. Fleece ‘jackets’ with a drawstring and in various sizes are available from my website, see www.pippagreenwood.com/ products/protect-your-crops.

If you’re planning on hedgeplanting, remember that many hedging plants are cheaper if bought ‘bare root field grown’, meaning lifted from their nursery field without being potted on. Order now to make sure you get the pick of the bunch. Bare root plants are not feasible once the leaves start to appear next year.

Use seed catalogues and websites to help decide what you want to grow next year.

Many suppliers offer seeds and young plants of many vegetables, so order now and you can relax, knowing that you have got your first choice selection. Established clumps of bamboo should be thinned out now. The extra space that the remaining canes will have will allow them to grow away better, and also gives them more freedom to move about in that way which makes bamboos so very appealing.

Less tender bulbs such as nerines and many of the agapanthus will winter better if you give them a little protection now. Mound dry chipped bark or other mulch over the area in which they are planted.

And last but not least, before water butts fill up with autumn rain grab a sturdy brush and clean each one out thoroughly, removing deposits of algae, soggy bits of plant and general gunge! Rinse out and then re-install ready to collect some rain.

A Common for All? Readers of this magazine might have noticed in the local press that the Cleeve Common Trust organised a series of activities during the summer.

Some of you might even have taken part. For my article this month I thought it might be interesting to explain how the Trust came into being.

In 1890 Colonel N.B. Thoyts, the mayor of Cheltenham, described Cleeve Common as the town's lungs and free breath. He was giving evidence at a Parliamentary enquiry which had been set up to investigate whether an Act of Parliament was needed to control the uses of the common. The free access enjoyed by the people of the spa town was increasingly resented by the local commoners who had the right to pasture their animals on the common. As a result of the enquiry, an act was passed under the long-winded title of Commons Regulation (Cleeve) Provisional Order Confirmation Act which set up the Board of Conservators who, as the Cleeve

Common Trust, still administer the common today. The minutes of that Parliamentary enquiry make interesting reading, informing us of the perceptions and prejudices of those people with an interest in this upland pasture.

The common had been used by the people of Bishop's Cleeve, Woodmancote and Southam as pasture for their sheep, cattle, horses and donkeys for centuries, but when Cheltenham races were held on the hill, principally between 1819 and 1842, they left a legacy of racehorse training, with the horses being brought up from Prestbury, but the trainers there had no rights on the hill. This encouraged a few of the local commoners to extort payments (£40 a time was mentioned at the enquiry) from the trainers to compensate for damage caused by the horses 'galloping by like a whirlwind', sometimes as many as ten in a line. Even riders of horses using the common for pleasure were charged £5. These illegal payments were said to have been subsequently spent in the public house! The members of parliament on the committee did not flinch to label these actions as blackmail which needed stamping out.

All the witnesses at the enquiry agreed that the uses of the common needed regulating, but they disagreed about the method. Ironically the two witnesses most

opposed to the proposals did not live locally. Arthur Heavens-Smith lived in Cheltenham (he had previously lived in Winchcombe) and William Etheridge kept a public house in London, although he came from a local family. They were both commoners because both owned freehold land locally which gave them the right to pasture as many animals on the common in the summer as their land would support in winter.

However, the chairman of the enquiry, Sir Walter Barttelot MP was less than impressed by their claims. HeavensSmith claimed he could winter twenty 'young beasts' on his fifteen acres but Etheridge failed to explain how the third of an acre holding of one of his tenants could sustain nine sheep in winter!

The crucial point to which these two objected was the number of places on the proposed Board of Conservators allocated to Cheltenham, in return for the town council's annual contribution of £50 towards the expenses of administering the common. £40 of this was proposed to pay for a haywarden, the forerunner of today’s rangers, to safeguard the animals.

If four were appointed, together with the two appointees of the Lord of the Manor who was the legal owner of the common, these six could block proposals from the other six conservators who represented the local commoners. In the end, Cheltenham accepted three representatives, which decision being agreed by all allowed the chairman to recommend the act be passed. It still governs the uses of the common over a century and a quarter later.

Hospice unveils Christmas beneficiary ball The only hospice in Gloucestershire giving inpatient care has announced details of its prestigious Christmas celebration raising funds for its specialist services.

For the first time, the event will be held at the stunning Princess Hall at Cheltenham Ladies College, giving the exclusive opportunity for guests to celebrate with family, friends, staff or entertain partners and clients.

Taking place on Friday 15th December the evening offers a traditional Christmas celebration packed with live entertainment and seasonal surprises, including a champagne diamond raffle in association with RJ Spicer Goldsmith.

Hosting the evening, which is sponsored by Pulhams Coaches, is Craig Wright and auctioneer Philip Allwood, the star of Bargain Hunt, Flog It and Dickinson’s Real Deal will be overseeing the evening’s charity auction, sending some highly exclusive lots under the hammer to help raise funds for the hospice.

The evening will start at 7.00pm with a sparkling drinks reception

and includes a gourmet traditional Christmas three-course dinner with wine and live music performances from The Chip Shop Boys.

Hygge The best known of our Scandi set, hygge was massive last winter and it looks like it’s here to stay. Pronounced ‘hoog-uh’, the Danish word is not directly translatable into English, but the overall concept stands for cosiness and contentment, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, and enjoying good times with friends and family. When you recognise that special moment – it’s the feeling of hygge. It’s well known that the Danes are the happiest people on the planet, and maybe it’s all because of hygge, which is an integral part of the nation’s culture and psyche. The high season for hygge is winter – it helps make long, dark evenings more bearable – and, especially, Christmas. Key elements?

Lagom The lagom trend hails from Sweden, and it roughly translates as ‘not too little, not too much’ – i.e. just the right amount. It’s applied to everything, from drinking coffee to buying a house, and its aim is fairness and contentment. Apparently, while hygge is a momentary state of happiness, lagom is more to do with an overall approach to life. And this sense of moderation and balance extends naturally to home design – functional, unfussy, minimal and wellmade pieces are key, with an emphasis on durability and sustainability. Naturally, Ikea has created a LIVE Lagom project, in which the Swedish flatpack superstore ‘supports customers and co-workers

with products, workshops, bespoke advice and an active community to help save energy and water, reduce waste and promote a healthy lifestyle.’

How else can you incorporate a sense of lagom in your home? Keep things simple, declutter, tidy, reduce your carbon footprint (LED light bulbs, for a start) and choose furniture and accessories that are pared-back, practical and stylish without being showy.

Just as October gives into November and autumn turns to winter, there are two things this year you can count on – fresh weather conditions and a fresh schedule on Radio Winchcombe.

We have new faces and a couple of changes to share with you.

The first big change will be the John Oldham Breakfast Show on Mondays and Tuesdays (7.00am – 9.00am).

We had to use high explosives to dislodge John Oldham from his Saturday mid-morning show, he’s been in that show for a long time, however, with gusto, excitement and a new toothbrush John will be roaring to go. You can look forward to music, information, news and fun!

Another change will be the return of Maxine Nelmes.

Maxine used to present the popular Maxine’s Kitchen show.

Now you can join her on Wednesday evenings at 7.00pm with The Max Factor, a mixture of top tunes and top chat.

Jane has wanted to be a radio presenter since her teens so now her ‘longing for’ is happening. She is going to present The Country Show at 7.00pm every Thursday and no, it’s not about tractors and mad cows... Jane's Country is that wonderful genre of music which spawned pop music as we know it today.

Tewkesbury has also brought us a new voice – Mark Sammy Jones who will be out with the ladies every Monday at 6.00pm for an hour.

His Ladies Night will feature 60 minutes of hits by female artists spanning from the 1950’s to now.

Friday Nights will be a must for those who want to get in the mood for a late night out – tune in to Lee Jay's Soul Train at 11.00pm.

Also, Elliot Jordan starts his new two-hour show Elliot AT Eleven on Saturday 4th November. What we love about Elliot is his choice of

music, specifically for teenagers.

He is our youngest presenter and we’ve also asked him to present Tuesday’s Hometime (4.00pm – 6.00pm). He’s fresh, enthusiastic and passionate about what he does.

Lastly, Bad Boy Barnsey’s Sunday Brunch will be extended to two hours on Sunday 5th November, there’ll be fireworks during the show – enjoy!

Christmas Lights Switch On Saturday 18th Nov, Bishop's Cleeve The afternoon will start with fairground rides and stalls in the Community Centre. Father Christmas's Grotto will be open in Badham's Pharmacy from 2.30pm (until 4.45pm).

At 5.00pm, Father Christmas will switch on the Christmas lights near the library. There will also be a choir and Tewkesbury Band will entertain visitors in the village garden in Church Road.

The event is organised by Bishop's Cleeve Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Parish Council.

The money raised by this year's Street Fair is being used to improve and erect the lights in Church Road. The Parish Council have donated £2,000 this year and are also spending up to £2,000 on lights around the village garden.
