There's certainly a lot of music in the air this month. Whether you listen to the Salvation Army Band play at Newent Lake on the 9th, take a trip to the Mitcheldean Fete & Folk Festival between the 14th and 16th, enjoy the Mesne Singers' summer concert on the 15th or travel to Coleford to enjoy non-stop music and family fun at the annual Coleford Music Festival (22nd and 23rd July) – make sure to make the most of it! The 53rd Welland Steam & Country Rally is another fantastic event that should not be missed! You can find out more about it on page 12 and 13.

A great big 'well done' to everyone who took part in the Race for Life last month in Gloucester or Relay for Life in the Forest of Dean, you did everyone proud!

Newent Town Council’s Newsletter A Message from the Mayor Cllr June Davies Firstly, thank you to all the people who have taken the time to congratulate me on my election as Mayor.

My first week in office was a very busy one, doing a walk with the Dolphin Club around the Lake to view the Wildlife Walk and bird and bat boxes.

I also talked to three separate Yr 9 groups from Newent Community School on the role of the Town Council, and officially opened the Knitted Bible Exhibition at St Mary’s Church – a sight to behold, especially for a non-knitter!

I am looking forward to meeting many people and organisations in Newent in my role as Mayor. Please contact the Town Clerk (details below) if you would like me to attend an event or meet your group.

Newent Open Day On Saturday July 22nd, 10am - 4pm there will be a great opportunity to see what Newent has to offer to local residents as well as to visitors to the town.

The Town Council is supporting local businesses and organisations by showcasing the variety of shops and leisure activities for which Newent has a well deserved reputation.

We want to encourage local people to shop here and to support our town.

Brass Band Concerts at Newent Lake

During the summer, come and enjoy a brass band concert at Newent Lake on the second Sunday of the month. Next event - July 9th, 2.30 - 4.30pm.

Newent Youth Advisory Group Members from the Community School, the Girl Guides and the Chill Out Zone attended the first meeting of the Newent Youth Advisory Group on May 18th along with the youth worker for Young Anglers and members of the Town Council.

Cake and Bake Peach Crostata

A crostata is an Italian lattice-topped pie which can be sweet or savoury. This one has a fruity fresh peach filling. Serve with crème fraîche or ice cream.

Ingredients:

1. To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl.

PASTRY • 350g plain flour • 175g butter, chilled and diced • 2 tbsp caster sugar

• 1 large egg, beaten with 2tbsp cold water FILLING • 6 peaches, halved, stones removed and thickly sliced

• 2 tbsp caster sugar • 2 tsp cornflour • Milk to glaze

• Icing sugar, to dust

Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes, plus chilling TIP

If you don’t have a pastry lattice roller, cut the rolled out pastry into thin strips and drape over the filling.

Add the butter and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, add the egg and water, then stir with a knife until the mixture begins to stick together.

Gather the dough with one hand, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few seconds until smooth. Flatten into a round, wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up.

Roll out about two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a one pound coin and use to line a 23cm round pie dish.

Toss the peaches in a bowl with the sugar and cornflour then pile into the pastry case. Roll out the rest of the pastry to a 20cm circle and use a lattice pastry roller to cut slashes in the pastry (see tip).

Brush around the edge of the pastry case with a little water then drape the pastry circle over the filling, pulling it gently to create the lattice effect. Press the pastry edges together to seal and trim off any excess pastry.

Glaze the pastry with milk, then place on the hot baking sheet in the oven and bake for 35-45 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar.

Newent in Bloom 2017: Front Garden Competition Newent in Bloom’s popular Front Garden competition starts soon. Entry forms are available from Newent Post Office, Pippins or Parkers or online by emailing newentinbloom@gmail.com.

No matter whether you have a window box, a postage stamp garden or half an acre, there will be a category to suit you. You can enter your own garden or nominate a friend’s or neighbour’s.

Judging begins early July, with the final round being completed in the third week of July. The results will be announced in August and the certificates be presented at the Onion Fayre on Saturday 9th September.

Newent Masons support for Great Oaks Hospice Four members of the Newent Daffodil Lodge recently visited Great Oaks at Dean Forest Hospice and presented them with a cheque for £600.

Celebrating three hundred years of organised Freemasonry, lodges across the country are reaching out to their communities and are engaging with local charities. In addition to the countless regular charitable donations made by the fraternity, each of the 83 lodges throughout the county has chosen to contribute an extra £300 to a local charity, which is then match-funded by Gloucestershire Masonic Charity Action.

“We were greeted by Jan Miles, the Hospice at Home and Outreach Communications and Care Organiser,” said Paul Hill the current master of Newent Daffodil Lodge. “Our visit coincided with the monthly coffee morning, so we were treated to coffee and cake in one of the lounges at the Coleford facility. Sally Taylor RGN, who is the Hospice at Home Coordinator, joined the visitors and explained the work that the centre engages in. “As a non-residential hospice we currently care for more than 400 people and families annually in the Forest of Dean area, both in the facility at Coleford and by home visits,” said Sally.

“The NHS provides only £29k per annum towards the Hospice's £600k annual costs, so every little extra helps those in need of hospice care.”

“The new Executive Manager of the hospice is Ruth Keeble,” continued Paul. “She joined us for the presentation to which the Press had also been invited.”

“If It Appreciates, Buy It. If It Depreciates, Lease It” Those wise words were said by oil tycoon John Paul Getty: a man who knew something about looking after money.

And he’s right. Especially when it comes to cars.

If you have half-million plus to buy a Ferrari Dino 246 GTS then, I say, you are wise to make that purchase. For next year you might make £100,000 when you sell it.

But if you only have £10,000 to buy a Fiat 500 then I reckon, fun car as it is (I’ve got one), you are mad.

Two cars from the same company at polar opposites on the pay-scale, but I advise you to buy the expensive one. For the 500, and any other mass-market car, I advise leasing every time.

Manufacturers and dealers are desperate to shift cars so deals on new ones are phenomenal.

When I bought the aforementioned 500 for my daughters, after the “deposit contribution”, the service package, the low RFL fee and the Fiatbacked lease deal were factored in the monthly payments were cheaper than if I had bought a two year old model with 20,000 miles on the clock. Plus I’ve an extra two years before the MOT is due.

You get no discounts for cash either. Dealers sell the finance options because they get commission and the repayment risk is passed to the finance firm. A win-win for them.

So, keep your money in the bank instead of watching it drain away on what you spend on that car.

Mr Getty was right. Collectable cars go up in value, so buy, buy, buy.

But production line jelly-moulds? Forget it. Lease every time.

Steam in the Malvern Hills

WELLAND STEAM & COUNTRY RALLY July 28th, 29th & 30th 2017

If you are looking for the perfect day out for the family this summer, look no further than the Worcestershire village of Welland, which hosts the annual Steam and Country Rally, now in its 53rd year. Welland is situated between Malvern and Upton-upon-Severn with easy access to the M50. The postcode for Sat Navs is WR13 6NG. The 2017 event is organised by the Ross-on-Wye Steam Engine Society, whose members give all their time voluntarily to put on what is now regarded as one of the biggest and best events of its type in the country.

A mixture of nostalgia, sights, sounds and a terrific atmosphere await you at Welland. The event is special in that you can see steam engines performing the tasks they were built for in the years leading up to the Second World War. Ploughing, threshing, timber sawing, etc. will all be undertaken by preserved steam traction engines. The rally boasts a traditional old time fairground where many of the rides will be powered and lit by electricity generated by magnificent Showmans’ road locomotives.

This year sees a tribute paid to the great Pat Collins – The king of showmen, which is hoped to include all of his surviving engines, the great Pat Collins organ, the Scammell Showtracs plus other memorabilia.

There is a large working field where you can see not only steam ploughing but also vintage tractors at work. Corn is threshed by steam power and steam powered saws convert tree trunks

into planks after being lifted into position by a rail-mounted steam crane. Amongst rural crafts being demonstrated are usually cider making, dry stone walling, blacksmithing, fence making and wood sculpture. First seen four years ago is the Great Welland Railway. This is a length of standard gauge railway with a full sized steam locomotive giving demonstrations – something you won’t see at many shows!

Welland boasts magnificent displays of vintage and classic cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, historic military vehicles, tractors and stationary oil engines.

Each day the exhibits take part in parades in the grand arena. Other events include races between traction engines, children’s tug of war, military vehicle demonstrations etc.

Music is important, and wherever you go on the ground you will never be far from fairground organs or brass band players and don’t miss the Cancan dancers giving performances during each day.

If you have never seen tractor pulling, be prepared to be amazed as specially built machines compete to see who can pull the weighted sledge the farthest.

New Annual Golf Competition, the Dave Trigg Memorial Trophy The inaugural golf competition was held at Burghill Valley Golf Club, Herefordshire (a superb golf course!) on June 15th which turned out to be a beautiful summer's day. The new Rotary trophy was won by Barrie Freeman who, like several other Club members, had the pleasure and privilege of playing golf with Dave at the South Herefordshire Golf Club over so many years. Dave was a popular and highly respected Rotarian, our Club President, and an accomplished keen golfer, who sadly passed away on a charity bike ride in the Cotswolds in September 2014.

Safe Journey

Now that the weather is really summery, everyone is rushing to their local garden centres, garden shows and nurseries to stock up on new plants for the garden. However, don’t forget to ensure that the plants you buy have a good chance of surviving, not only once they get home, but also during the journey there; it is worth taking a few very sensible precautions.

Don’t take something home the day you buy it if it is too large to fit in your car. However slowly you drive, if the plant is sticking out of a sunroof or window the foliage is going to be scorched and damaged, and it is possible that a stem may be broken.

Almost all garden centres now offer delivery and this is usually free of charge within a reasonable radius, so take advantage of this service.

If the plant does fit in your car then remember to wrap the root ball in a black bin liner or a box, to prevent the back of your car becoming full of compost, grit etc.

Always use the garden centre as the last port of call before travelling home, as in hot weather temperatures increase Page 16

quickly in a closed car, even with the windows or sunroof open. Under these conditions the plants can soon be boiled alive, literally! Plants in the boot should be safer for a slightly longer period of time, but you should travel straight home once you have made your purchases.

If you are determined to take something home that protrudes slightly from your car, then it is essential that you wrap up anything which is sticking out really well to prevent leaf scorch and damage. Make sure that it is tied down extremely well so that it can’t blow off on the way home. Remember that anything protruding from your car could potentially cause a driving hazard to other road users, so be sensible.

Even on a short journey home, plants which are exposed to exaggerated heat inside a car or the scorching effect of sunlight travelling through the car glazing can be seriously damaged, so cover them up with something to decrease the risk. It is worth taking a few old newspapers with you when you go to the garden centre, as these make perfect temporary

tents.

Remember that most plants prefer fairly constant conditions, so try not to put them through too many changes in a short space of time. Ideally, take them from one area in the garden centre to somewhere similar in your garden, and keep any travelling during hot weather to a minimum. If they look at all damaged from their journey then give them a week or two to recuperate in dappled shade in a protected position in your garden.

And don’t forget that when you plant anything new in your garden, if the weather is at all dry it is worth waiting until the evening or at least late afternoon before planting. Make sure that everything is kept well watered, as this will increase the chances of the plants establishing without too much distress.

Windows On A Budget If you need a laptop but don’t want to spend a fortune, you’ll soon be spoilt for choice: Microsoft is joining Google’s Chromebooks in the low-cost laptop game. Devices such as Acer’s Chromebook 15 (around £240) offer big-laptop performance for a fraction of the price, but Google’s Chrome OS may put potential customers off. That’s what Microsoft hopes, anyway: there’s a whole bunch of Chromebook-competing Windows 10 laptops going on sale this summer, offering the value for money of a Chromebook with the familiar face of Windows 10. 4th successive Big Lunch in Newent This year saw the fourth annual Big Lunch by the Lake, organised by the Voice of Newent.

It proved a great success and shows that the people of Newent really know how to enjoy themselves. The weather was wonderful and the fact that the event is free makes it a highly popular choice with both local residents and visitors to the town.

The Big Lunch is a real feature of Newent life and shows that there is a desire to enjoy what the town has to offer as year on year more and more people attend the event.

This year, in a change, the event was run in conjunction with the Newent and District Rotary Club, who are raising funds for 'Meningitis Now' and the Voice of Newent were glad to be a part of it. Clive Gardener, chair of the Rotary Club, was very instrumental in the organisation and the Voice of Newent were very grateful for his support.

This year's event had an even greater number of stalls including activities, teas, coffee and cake, tombolas, raffles and, as you may imagine, the ice cream seller who did very well indeed. In addition, a pig roast was available for the first time and the incredibly tasty pork, stuffing and apple sauce rolls proved a great success. I'm sure it will be back next year!

An annual feature of the event is the Strawberry Hill Dancers. They superbly performed their dances and wowed the crowd despite the heat. The music was supplied by the Soundscape Community Music Association. All groups performed excellently well on stage in the heat of the afternoon and were thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. The fact that they were all local bands just added to the pleasure.

OnionEd also made an appearance to the great delight of the children. He loves to turn out for the children but also reminded people that he will be hosting the Onion Fayre on 9th September.

Hartpury CofE Primary School – Beginning a new era!

After four and a half years Hartpury CofE Primary School is about to move into a new era as the current head teacher, Mr Tony Larner, is off to pastures new. The governing body has already recruited the new head teacher, Mr Simon Millington, who will take up the post in September 2017.

Mr Larner has been at the school for just under five years and in that time the school has come a long way to be one of the local most thriving educational establishments. Just before Mr Larner took up the post in 2013, the school had received an OFSTED inspection that categorised them as ‘requiring improvement’.

Over the subsequent two years the staff, governors and children worked together to ensure that the improvements required were put in place to see the school be judged ‘Good’ in 2014. The inspection identified a range of key features that have helped make the school one of the most desirable in the local area: • The headteacher, staff and governors all share a determination to ensure all pupils do as well as they can.

• Pupils make good progress in reading, writing and mathematics and achieve well in all year groups. This is as a result of thorough checks on the quality of teaching, which has improved since the last inspection.

• Teachers are particularly good at extending pupils’ learning by asking questions to get them to think more deeply. They are also good at planning work that is set at the right level, particularly in mixed age classes.

• Children in the Reception class make good progress. Strong links with the adjacent nursery ensure children settle well into school life.

• Disadvantaged pupils make similar or better progress than their peers in the school.

• Teaching assistants are very skilled and well qualified and play a key role in supporting pupils’ progress. This is particularly, but not exclusively, the case for pupils who are in danger of falling behind.

• Pupils’ behaviour is good. Pupils are polite and welcoming and often demonstrate care and concern for each other. They are keen to learn and regularly show high levels of concentration in lessons.

• Systems for keeping pupils safe are thorough. Pupils say they feel safe in school, and parents agree.

• Governors are supportive and know the school’s strengths through their regular visits. This enables them to ask challenging questions and to hold leaders to account.

• Subsequent to this, as a Church of England School, Hartpury received its Church School Inspection, focussing on the Christian ethos, its impact on learners and the effectiveness of the leadership and management of the school.

Science and Sport at Pauntley School

On the 7th of June the junior children went to the Cheltenham Science Festival, where they had an exciting time programming and racing Lego cars, talking about and constructing a “brain”, and experimenting with using different kinds of materials.

A few days later they had a fantastic day at PGL, taking part in many different kinds of sporting activities.

These included orienteering, team games and having

fun on the trapeze. Our usual sporting events are also continuing throughout the summer term, with swimming, cricket and tag rugby lessons helping the children to have fun and learn new skills.

Every Thursday morning the new intake children – who are joining us in September – have been coming in to spend time with us. The children in May Hill Class thoroughly enjoy showing them everything that we do here.

As always, we are very grateful to the Friends of the school who have paid for the transport for several trips this term and have held another gardening day in order to keep our school grounds in pristine condition. The Friends are also organising a school disco and Summer Fair; the Fair will be held on Saturday 1st July and we are happy to welcome everyone from the local community who would like to come along and join in the fun.

New Start Cat Rescue - Together we make a difference A lot has happened since our move and I can certainly say life is very hectic here! There is still a lot of work to be done but as they say, Rome wasn't built in a day.

We have been fortunate that so many fosterers took in cats and kittens so we could leave our old premises. Work has been ongoing there so that we leave it in the same condition as when we found it - actually, we left it in a much better position so our old landlords should be happy.

With the bad weather we experienced a few weeks ago we found out that our kitties were getting wet paws. We had water gathering on the surfaces in the pens - an awful lot of water so we need funds to buy proper waterproof flooring for the bases of all our pens, and we also need funding to look into how to carry any water gathering on the surface of the area away from the pens.

There are a ridiculous amount of “Thank You’s” to be made to people for the incredible amount of work they have done and continue to do for us.

ATTACK OLD GROUT Try cleaning discoloured grout with proprietary products first, but if the mould or stains won’t shift, buy a special grout rake from a hardware store and carefully remove the old grout to a depth of at least 2mm, then apply new grout. While you’re at it, remove black and mouldy silicone sealant with a sharp knife, then clean and dry the area thoroughly and re-apply new sealant. You’ll need a steady hand for this bit, so take a deep breath before you start, and if in doubt, search for an online video for guidance.

Auction Anecdote Just on the final deadline day for our June antiques sale, we received a very exciting item of jewellery which may look fairly innocuous to some but I am hoping it will be a ‘star performer’ at our 16th June Auction.

The item in question is a small Art Nouveau silver and enamel pendant set with three tiny amethysts and suspended with a single pearl – a very pretty combination but it is the makers mark on the back which makes it particularly interesting. The back has a standard silver hallmarked with a date code for 1905 and also the makers mark WHH. The owner had thought the mark might be of interest but had no idea who it might be and so a few minutes of internet research were required.The maker turned out to be one William Hair Haseler who made small silver items, pewter and jewellery for Liberty’s from 1901 to 1926. This of course immediately made the pendant much more desirable as Liberty’s are the iconic brand for this type of Art Nouveau jewellery which they pioneered in the Edwardian period under the trade name Cymric.

The pendant’s design is absolutely typical of the work of Archibald Knox who was Liberty’s primary and prolific designer of all manner of wares in the Art Nouveau style.

His work, in fact, crosses the divide between The Arts & Crafts movement of the Victorian era to the Art Nouveau and Celtic Revival movements of the Edwardian period and was incredibly popular at the time and still is now 120 years later. Sadly our pendant does not bear the Liberty mark which would be ‘the icing on the cake’ but it would have undoubtedly been made for Liberty and most probably to a design by Knox.

The pendant carries a modest estimate of £200/£300 but I am expecting great things and I have to admit I will be disappointed if it sells for less than five or six hundred pounds on the day. By the time this article is published the pendant will have been sold and of course, you can always log onto our website to find out how it did on the day.

Sticky Barbecue Chicken Wings Serves 4

Ready in 50 minutes

Chicken wings are a great budget buy and perfect for a TV dinner or speedy supper. Serve with a home-made coleslaw or rice salad for a more substantial meal.

Preheat the oven to 200C, 180 fan, gas 6. Place the wings on a metal rack set over a roasting tin and roast in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.

Ingredients: • • • • • •

1 kg chicken wings 8tbsp tomato ketchup 2tbsp Worcestershire sauce 3tbsp smooth mango chutney 2tsp Dijon mustard 1tbsp sunflower oil

150ml soured cream 2 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 1tbsp fresh snipped chives

Meanwhile, make the sticky glaze by mixing together the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mango chutney, mustard and oil in a small bowl. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

FOR THE DIP

Remove the roasting tin from the oven and liberally brush the glaze all over the chicken wings.

TIP

You can cook the wings on a hot barbecue for an al fresco supper. It’s best to cook them in the oven for the first 15 minutes then glaze and just place them on the barbecue for the last 15-20 minutes of cooking time.

Return the roasting tin to the oven and roast the wings for a further 1520 minutes until the wings are golden brown and slightly charred in places.

Mix together the dip ingredients in a small bowl. Serve with the chicken wings.

Craig's Comment I recently visited New Start Cat Rescue, a local charity that many of you might well be aware of.

While they have a charity shop in the centre of Newent, which many of you may have visited, this is just a small part of their work.

The shop is only one of the ways that the charity raises money to care for and rehome cats in the area.

Until very recently Jackie and her team were based in my Oxenhall & Newent North-East ward on the B4215. Having been flooded regularly over the years as the road and nearby fields received large amounts of rain water, they have finally found a new home.

While it is a great shame to have seen them leave my ward, having met some of their feline friends at their new home in Huntley, the move has been a success in so many ways. The move and the conversion of their new home have been done almost entirely by New Start’s band of volunteers and has been facilitated by donations from

local businesses and residents.

By chance, on the day I visited they were proudly showing off their brand new sign. However, the refurbishment goes much further than that.

Local businesses have installed shelving and cupboards in their store room as well as specialist pens for sick cats that need nursing back to health.

Their new front of house welcome area is also coming along with the new doors and lighting.

Some residents have donated cat food and other important items that are needed on a daily basis; others have lent a hand and volunteered on site. This includes young people from local schools and groups.

Unfortunately, there are stills cats, along with other pets, that are left behind or mistreated by their owners. However, while this goes on, I know that Jackie and her team of volunteers will continue to work hard and give all the help they can.

Their work can, however, only reach as far as it does thanks to the brilliant help and support of all the local businesses and residents

who have worked with them, and who continue to do so.

THE FUN DOG SHOW

Hi everyone, It's me again, OnionEd! Not many of you out there know this but I am very fond of dogs, so I have organised a very special Dog Show as part of our Onion Fayre on the 9th of September this year which I am going to call THE FUN DOG SHOW. I am also very excited to announce that, this year, it will include my favourite breed – Leonberger Dogs. For those of you who are not familiar with these beautiful dogs, they are a giant breed of dog that can grow up to 80 centimetres tall (that’s almost 3 feet). They are considered one of the most loving, obedient and companionable dog breeds around.

Originally used as a farm dog in Bavaria in the 1830’s, they were also

host of fun classes to enter.

New Owners of Italian Kitchen celebrate 1 year already Colin Rooke took over the Italian Kitchen in Broad Street, Newent, one year ago from previous owners John and Pearl Celino, who retired.

He has been in the catering business for more than 30 years, latterly as General Manager at the Kilcot Inn, but always wanted to own his own business.

Colin says: “I enjoyed working at the Kilcot, however, when I learned that John and Pearl were retiring I saw the opportunity I had been waiting for and felt I had to take it.

I admit it felt like it was a gamble but through the generosity and patronage of the people of Newent this first year it has proved the best thing I could have done. I am so pleased to receive the thank you letters, cards and flowers from satisfied patrons.

I see the cafe as a community cafe where people meet for tea/coffee, cake or a snack, for a chat and for Page 38

meetings and we now also cater for parties, birthdays and groups.

I have always liked Newent and felt I wanted to give something back to the town.

Gloucester rock school opens third venue A fast growing Gloucester rock school is opening its third venue just a month after opening its first.

The Rock Project Gloucester is running its latest sessions at Severn Vale School, Quedgeley every Wednesday during term time.

The school sees professional, gigging musicians teach young people aged seven to 18 how to play bass, guitar, drums and sing in a band.

Led by US-born Ethan Marrs and fellow musician Andy Young, The Rock Project Gloucester established sessions in Colwell Arts Centre and Gloucestershire International School last month.

Ethan, a father of one from South Carolina, explained that the school is split into juniors, aged 7-11 and seniors aged 12-18-years-old.

“The aim is to build confidence as well as musicianship,” he said. “It’s amazing to see the children and young people coming to the school develop so quickly. As a drummer

and guitarist, I wanted to start tutoring, but The Rock Project really takes that to a whole new level.”

During one half of each session, students are tutored in their chosen instrument, before putting what they’ve learnt into practice to come together and play as a band.

Colleague Andy Young, whoalso runs a luxury bed and breakfast with his wife Alex, explained that it was his love of rock music that inspired him to set up the schools.

“I love music and have a lifelong obsession with Metallica, having learnt to play most of their songs on a guitar as a teenager,” he said.

“I feel passionately that music is an important part of a child’s all-round education that it can have a hugely positive influence on their lives.”

The Rock Project Gloucester sessions take place every Tuesday at Gloucestershire International School, Horton Road, Gloucester. The second school takes place every Thursday at Colwell Arts Centre, Horton Road, Gloucester and the third is at Severn Vale School, Quedgeley every Wednesday.

All three schools hold their junior sessions from 4.30pm to 6.30pm

and senior sessions from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

All of the instruments are supplied and no previous musical experience is necessary.

This heady mixture of village fete, folk festival and poetry festival that is unique in the Forest of Dean, and unmatched for many miles around, will be happening again in Mitcheldean from 14th – 16th July. The fun has already started with our warm-up concert in Mitcheldean’s Brewery Tap on June 3rd, with great music that had people dancing in the aisles!

This year we have a beer festival organised by our very own Bespoke Brewery, where for £5 entry you receive a commemorative glass and your first choice of pint from among the 100 ales on offer – and as well as beers in the festival marquee, the Brewery Tap will be showcasing local ciders!

The fete and festival also have new things to offer, as Forest of Dean Dog Rescue is organising a dog show as part of the fete. There is also a new competition for families to produce a Jolter figure in honour of a traditional Forest character,

Aches and Pains – is your pet affected?

Does your dog seem to be a little more sluggish than normal?

Or is your cat reluctant to groom? This could be down to arthritic changes in their joints.

The most common form of arthritis is Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease).

This is a chronic and progressive condition of the joints, where the joint cartilage which normally forms on a pad at the end of each bone, breaks down and the bone surfaces rub against each other. This causes swelling, stiffness, pain and a restricted movement in the joint.

Although arthritis cannot usually be cured, there are several things that we can do to help, these include: • Weight control: overweight pets tend to struggle far more with stiffness and arthritis than slender ones, this is because the extra weight puts more strain on the joints.

• Exercise regimes: this can also make a difference. Most stiff

dogs will benefit from two or three shorter walks every day rather than one long one every day. Some dogs can also benefit from hydrotherapy and physiotherapy • Supportive medication: there are various medications that can help your pet feel more comfortable, these include oral medication that you can administer at home or injections in to the joint (these are done under general anaesthetic).

If you are concerned about your pet’s mobility, or would just like some advice, please contact the surgery.

Troublesome Ticks With the weather warming up and dogs going for more walks in the countryside, we are seeing an increasing number of ticks.

They live in the long grass and woodland areas waiting to latch on to passing pets. Once the ticks have attached to the pet, they feed on your pet’s blood – often for several days.

There are several effective ways of controlling ticks, including spot ons, collars and a very effective tablet that gives three months protection.

The main issues with ticks, is that they carry diseases in their saliva, which they can potentially transmit to pets: • Lyme Disease: this is the primary tick borne pathogen in the UK and Ireland, it can affect dogs and humans • Babesiosis: another tick borne disease which may affect dogs (but not humans) travelling to and from mainland Europe

Rotarian Jan Long from Bromsberrow Heath recently climbed over London’s 02 Arena to raise funds for Rotary charities that support people around the globe.

In completing the climb over the Dome, Jan said: “It was quite a challenge as I overcame two of my worst fears. The first of my anxieties was using the tube, which resulted from having been stuck underground following a terrorist attack when I used to commute to London for work many years ago. The second is a fear of heights and since the Dome is 165 feet high, I was just a bit concerned! However, having seen the dreadful crippling effects of the poliovirus in

India during my recent visit to immunise children against Polio, I wanted to raise awareness of this disease and the need to eradicate it. The total amount raised is likely to be £3,000 which is just astonishing and I'm so grateful to everyone who sponsored me! The funds will go towards Rotary charities at home and abroad.”

Are You Financially Resilient? Five Ways To Protect Yourself From Unexpected Job Loss financially resilient should the worst happen and you find yourself without an income.

The reality of sudden job loss hit thousands of people in every region of the UK during the global financial crash, and although the economy is now recovering, the fact that we could suddenly lose our only source of income hasn’t gone away.

If that time of financial crisis has taught us anything, it’s that we should prepare in advance for unexpected loss of income - a report from Legal and General¹ illustrates just how precarious our financial position really is: “the average household has a Deadline to the Breadline of just 29 days.

For working age families it’s just 14 days.”

The report also found that: • People believed they could survive more than twice as long (77 days on average) compared to the reality of 29 days.

• 35% of households have no savings, so for these people their ‘Deadline to the Breadline’ could be tomorrow.

Preparing in advance for potential job loss is crucial to survive, so here are five steps that will help you become more Page 52

1. Understand your current financial position Only by understanding the reality of your present financial situation can sustainable changes be made. Gather together all your financial documents including bank and credit card statements, loan and credit agreements, and details of your monthly expenditure, to get a clearer picture of how job loss would affect you.

Then you can make a budget to help you plan your spending each month, and live within your means. A variety of budget sheets are available online, and you should include every item of expenditure from cups of coffee to the annual holiday - you’ll get a better idea of whether you’re spending more than you earn over the course of a year.

2. Prioritise and pay down debt If you consider the consequences of failing to make each debt repayment, it’ll help you decide which should take priority over others. At its simplest, paying your mortgage and energy bills will keep a roof over your head, and a warm home.

Even though priority debts aren’t always the largest

or most expensive, they should be paid first if the repercussions of nonpayment are serious. After that you could tackle the debts with the highest interest rates, although some people prefer to pay off the smallest loans first to provide motivation.

3. Save for an emergency fund Do you pay off debt first, or save for an emergency fund? There are two schools of thought: • The disparity between interest rates for savers and borrowers means you’ll pay more overall if you don’t repay debt first.

• If you lose your job, the credit card provider may decide to reduce your credit limit, and you’ll have less money available for emergencies. Another factor to consider is the increase in identity theft that also leaves you open to potential problems, and again could reduce your access to cash when you need it most.

If you can manage your monthly credit card bills for a while, you could compromise by saving three or four months’ worth of living expenses in a separate account that won’t be touched, and then return to paying down any debt.

Gentle Walks

We know that walking and exercise in general really helps improve circulation, promotes restful sleep and can enhance moods. We also believe that spending time outdoors and connecting with nature can enhance general feelings of well-being.

We have therefore joined with Orchard Trust in providing walks for people with dementia and their carers to get outside and meet like-minded people, these walks being suitable for those who use walking aids & chairs.

The FOD Walking for Health program also organizes regular walks throughout the Forest, several of which are classed as easy and offer between 10 minutes and one hour of walking.

Those with dementia and their carers are welcomed, though it is advisable to phone the Walk Leader in advance to check that the walk will be suitable for your needs.

All the walks listed below aim to finish with a ‘cuppa’ & a biscuit, we've earned it after all!
