Peter and Sarah Vey have kindly invited us back to visit this charming Ancient Monument in the heart of the Hampshire Countryside which is virtually on our doorstep. This tiny chapel was built circa 1360 on land given by Walter de Anderley to The Knights Hospitallers. We will walk up to the Three Castles Path and back before we enter the garden of Godsfield Manor and the Chapel.

View from the Vicarage At time of writing our family television viewing is dominated by the Paris Olympics. It is frankly enthralling to watch some of the athletes perform.

Maybe it is just a perception, but there seems to be much more human emotion on display than there was 20 or 32 years ago. Especially, when athletes win a medal or miss out by just a fraction of a second.

It made me think about perseverance and what motivates us in life. Many of these athletes have spent 4 years training for this one event, trying to qualify to attend the Olympics and then having to perform at their peak, over the course of just a few days, just to get to a position to finally compete for a medal. No wonder success, or failure, can be so emotional.

They must have incredible inner strength, resilience and perseverance to keep motivated for that period of time - knowing that success is not guaranteed. As we saw, they can’t control catching Covid a couple of days prior to their main event.

The apostle Paul, who lived during the lifetime of Jesus, appears to have been a ‘fan’ of athletics about 2000 years ago.

Regarding the Christian life Paul wrote, in the bible (1 Corinthians Ch 9v25), “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we (Christians) do it to get a crown that will last forever.”

And, Paul wrote, in the book of 2 Timothy Ch 4v8, ‘Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day - and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.’

For Paul, the Christian life was something valuable, something motivational and offered a prize, a ‘crown of righteousness’ that would be available at the end of his race. Even better, this crown was not dependent on his exertion but on God’s mercy.

In the book of Romans Ch 9v16 Paul writes, ‘It (Being in God’s family) does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.’

Did you know that an Olympic athlete lives in Sutton Scotney? It is not for me to tell their story. They hold two national records to this day and met the late Queen Elizabeth on the Royal Yacht Britannia. They would be a good person to ask about the importance of perseverance, of training and, also, of having faith in an eternal prize that is not yet tangible but is very real.

Safari Supper – Book Now! We hope you can join us for this year’s Micheldever Safari Supper on Saturday 5 October.

Each course will be hosted in a different house, with a different group of guests and there’s an opportunity for everybody to meet up for welcome drinks at the start of the evening.

The cost will be £25 per person for those hosting a course at their home, with the option for hosts to claim one free place.

If you’d like to take part, but can’t host a course, the cost will be £30 per person (nonhosting places are limited, due to logistics).

The event will be raising money for the St Mary’s Church Fabric Fund. Last day for bookings is Friday 27 September.

Summer Barbecue at Northbrook Hall For the second year running the Northbrook Hall hosted a village BBQ - which again was well supported and enjoyed in the brilliant sunshine. The table - groaning under the weight of numerous raffle prizes so generously donated by all our local pubs and kind hearted folk - which meant very few arrived home without some prize or another.

Star chef Paul Newman (who once catered for H.M. Queen Elizabeth 2nd) generously donated his time and served delicious hot food - whilst salads, potato dishes and desserts complimented the fayre and so kindly offered by some of the many visitors.

The Sensational Acoustic Dever Group (who perform fortnightly at the Wonston Arms) donated their time and entertained us through the evening–and were much appreciated.

All funds raised, around £400, were in support of the Hall’s maintenance programme and we are very grateful for everyone’s support and generosity.

These events take a fair amount of effort to stage - and special thanks to Jane and Graham Metcalfe, Peter O’Keefe, Louise Keys, Simon Maylam and not least our Suzy – as well as many others.

A grand effort with the Hall Committee’s sincerest thanks. As ever we would like to expand the Committee’s strength and would be so grateful for anyone willing to spare us just 2 hours a month to assist us? Please call 774 445 to discuss.

Parish Council News Hedges Now that the bird nesting season has ended, hedges can be cut again. Please ensure that any hedge bordering a road, footway, cycleway or public right of way is cut back so that it does not prevent passage or affect the safety of the highway user, including cyclists and pedestrians.

Many local tradespeople, including those offering garden services, advertise in the Dever Advertiser if you are unable to carry out this work effectively yourself.

Vandalism at the allotments Damage has been caused, by young residents, to crops and a greenhouse at the allotments. This is understandably distressing for those who have spent time working to make their plots productive. Please impress upon your children the importance of respecting other people’s property and hard work.

PC Hayley Goodsell, our Dedicated Neighbourhood Officer, will be advised of all instances of damage.

Bus Shelter at the Lord Rank Playing Field Thank you to those who have already responded to the item (as in the paragraph below) which was included in the August Dever. These comments will be discussed at the next Parish Council meeting on 4th September and any further responses received before the meeting can also be considered, The bus shelter is in rather a sorry state after repeated acts of vandalism. With few buses and ever-increasing repair costs, the Parish Council are considering either fully removing the bus shelter or adapting it to eliminate the need for panes of glass.

This would be part of the project to also improve the appearance of the bin area and this end of the car park. We would welcome ideas and opinions from residents.

Micheldever Fete 2024 As the clouds gathered and the weather forecast wavered, the fate of the fete seemed to be perilous. As it turned out the weather was ideal - not too hot, not too bright etc. - and a happy throng gathered on the Lord Rank Playing Field on the afternoon of Saturday 20 July. The stalls were buzzing, and funds were raised in support of St Mary the Virgin church. We enjoyed the afternoon and very much hope that you did as well.

Micheldever Music Night Sunday evening on 29th September at 6.30pm promises to be a great evening of music in the superb nave of St Mary’s Church. A glass of sparkling wine (can’t call it Champagne but it will be as good as!) and canapés await you on arrival, enjoyed on what will hopefully be a balmy evening in the church grounds. Then the programme starts at 7pm with Claire Bentham’s quintet singing some great numbers. Colin Harvey will then play Bach and Bovet before the interval. There will be a cash bar during the interval. The second half starts with the Wills Ensemble Familial of flute, clarinet and piano followed by Margaret Watson on the harp. The evening will conclude with a flute and harp finale. Our Master of Ceremony throughout the evening will be John Lofthouse. A medley of wonderful music with something for everyone.

Apart from great music in an acoustically

wonderful venue, the evening is raising money to pay for some rather expensive repairs needed on the magnificent organ in the church.

Tickets in advance are £18 for adults and £10 for those under 16. At the door on the evening tickets will be £20 for adults.

News from Woodmancote & Popham Woodmancott was treated to a full Choral Evensong for our Patronal service in July with Rev Rob, Claire Bentham, Ruth Guy, and Claire's husband Ian singing. It was magical! The Church looked rather special, decorated with all garden flowers - just roses and sweetpeas. It was James Wymark's last service with us so he was presented with a gift from the Benefice and gave a very thought provoking sermon.

Afterwards we gathered in the Church yard for wine and delicious nibbles and it was a warm sunny evening!

August was a rather quiet month, but in September we look forward to the

wonderful open garden, kindly hosted

by Alex and Stone Macpherson, at Armsworth Park House, all in aid of St James, Saturday 14th September. Then to follow that, our Harvest Festival with lunch afterwards on Sunday 29th September at 11am. Lunch will be kindly hosted

by Mary Wallis and Nick Greenwood.

Planting For Pollinators Insects are critical for pollinating our food and flowers. Here we're highlighting some of our favourite plants which are friendly for pollinators. This includes those which attract bees, moths, butterflies and beetles.

To help you find plants which are pollinator friendly here at Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants, we include a bee symbol on our plant labels and website

listings. If you see this sign, you'll know that this plant is really a pollinators favourite.

A few pollinator friendly plants which are perfect for this are Achillia ‘Gloria Jean’, Allium ‘Millennium’ Spherical, Eryngium × zabelii ‘Big Blue’, Nepeta racemose ‘Walkers Low’, Oenothera lindheimeri Rosyjane (‘Harrosy') PBR and Verbena bonarienses.

Volunteer Drivers in Micheldever Parish

T

here is a list of helpful individuals that can be found in our sister publication, The Advertiser. Perhaps you didn’t know there is such a group, but the Volunteer Drivers have over the years taken many people to various appointments. It is an informal arrangement for anyone needing occasional transport, which in our rural location, can be a difficult or costly problem to solve. Our volunteers will help anyone without

the means, or for those incapacitated either temporarily or not.

It is a very simple process to become involved, the task is not too demanding and new people are always welcome. If you are able then please offer to be a volunteer driver please. Contact Amanda at deveradvertising@hotmail.com to be included in the next issue of The Advertiser.

Sutton Scotney Community Café From September we will be renaming the Wonston café the “Sutton Scotney Community Café” to avoid confusion with the pop-up café that runs in South Wonston.

We will still be offering the same service to all residents of Wonston parish and beyond, and hope to see you in September.

For a second month we were able to use the outside space at the Victoria Hall, with many guests enjoying the sunshine. As well as our many regulars, we were joined this month by new visitors who had walked from Barton Stacey.

Other new visitors included Karen and Nicole, from local care company Everycare based in Sutton Scotney.

They enjoyed their cake so much that they took cake back to their colleagues in the office! The July café was run in aid of the local Church Pantry, and we also had a box for collection of donated items for the pantry. As usual

our visitors were very generous and raised a total of £297.50 after expenses.

After taking a well-deserved break in August, the next Sutton Scotney Community Café will be at the Victoria Hall, Sutton Scotney, 9.30am–12 noon on Wednesday 18th September. This month we will be fundraising for an Autism assistance dog for local boy Stefan.

Some of his family will be at the café to give visitors information about the project.

Please do come along to support the community café, which is staffed entirely by volunteers. All the cakes are homemade, we have real coffee and plenty of free parking! As well having a gluten free cake option every month, we also offer cheese scones and biscotti. All the cakes are available to eat-in or takeaway – in fact some of our regulars bring their own takeaway containers! The café is cash only.

Jackie’s County Corner As your councillor, I often hear, “it took four of them who came to fill the hole!!”

In July, Councillors visited the Bishop’s Waltham depot to see some of the innovations in road maintenance, and to discover why it needs four operatives and a few hours to fill a hole! The permanently repaired holes are now finished with a heat sealed strip - the missing link that many of you have commented in the past. The strip includes tiny (recycled) glass particles to ensure the slip resistance is good for bikes and motorbikes too.

Following agreement to do so, the Minerals and Waste (M&W) plan, which covers Hampshire, SDNPA, and other local authorities in the region, is now going forward for examination to the Inspectorate. There are several points relevant to our division more details of which are on my website : 1. A number of us appealed for carbon offsetting of oil and gas extraction if a licence is granted. The M&W plan will be changed to reflect that.

2. Micheldever Station is no longer a ‘saved site’ for a wharf.

3. The impact of heavy traffic on rural sites will be considered over a wider area.

Unfortunately, too late for some of our sites, but important for the future.

HCC has received an ‘outstanding‘ grading for Children Services. It was good 18

to hear this because the staff work hard and are highly committed, but this result is no consolation for the residents who battle for funding for transport and SEND places. There is a working party being formed to look at School transport. I’d like councillors to hear the ‘parent voice’ in this, so if you’d like to give input, please let me know, putting ‘school transport’ in the subject line. Thank you. The service also cares for children who move in and out of care as family circumstances change and at any one time, over 1500 children are living away from their parents. If you would like to consider a career in fostering please go to the www.hants.gov.uk website for details. There is a full training programme and with the ‘hub’ scheme in place, foster families are linked to other families for additional support and respite.

Even if the drains were perfectly clear, we would have needed storm drains to cope with around 75mm of rain in such a short time, and unsurprisingly, water always flows downhill through gardens and drives. Rainwater landing on the ground needs to find a natural way back into the ground. It’s worth asking: is your garden sealed like a bath or a leaky sieve?

All this rain is making hedges and verges grow faster. If you cannot see road signage or

your view at a junction is unsafe because of high vegetation please use the ‘report it’ tab on the front page of the www.hants.gov.uk website. Please retain the reference number for tracking purposes. These reports are usually dealt with quickly, but I can chase up if they are not done within a week.

Lease specialist Tusker, who surveys their drivers every year and has 16,000 EVs in their fleet, said in 2023 that “91% of EV drivers were either ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with their current EV.” Tusker’s MD, Kit Wisdom, said “In terms of people who finish an agreement with us and enter into another one for a new car, 92% of EV drivers who came to the end of their agreement in 2023 went back into another EV and 6% went into a hybrid. We are a friendly group of villagers who like to gather together a few times a year to taste, discuss and enjoy wines from around the world whilst socialising with our neighbours. Absolutely no knowledge or experience is necessary – if you enjoy drinking wine you’ll enjoy coming to our wine circle!

Simon is returning to present another evening of hand curated wine selections from their shop in Lymington. Since last time, Simon and the shop have gone from strength to strength and are now officially AWARD WINNING.

Most of our events are held in the Northbrook Village Hall where an independent wine merchant brings 6 wines for us to taste . Cheese and crackers with other nibbles is provided whilst sampling the wines and learning more about them.

The cost is £15 per head though the Summer and Christmas parties generally cost a little bit extra.

City Councillors’ News The Government has started a consultation on the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), which sets down planning laws for England. There are some significant changes proposed, particularly the mandatory home building calculation that would require nearly 50% more homes to be built in our District each year. If implemented now, the City Council would need to allocate land for at least another 4,900 homes over the next 15 years. Most neighbouring authorities have been given similar increases. This threatens the land around Micheldever Station, Popham Airfield and to the South of Winchester, which we all hoped had been spared until these recent announcements.

The City Council administration is pressing ahead with completion of the review of the latest Local Plan. This has to comply with the current version of the NPPF, so consultation on the latest version of Winchester’s Local Plan has started early to delay having to allocate more land

for housing than is currently planned for www.winchester.gov.uk. This understandable haste to delay implementation of new housing targets will mean that the City Council will not be adjusting the Local Plan in light of any comments made at recent meetings, particularly about the allocations next to Sutton Scotney, South Wonston and Littleton. Anyone with any concerns or objections about the current Reg 19 version of Winchester’s Local Plan should submit them during the consultation period that is expected to run until 13th October 2024. Those submissions will then be considered at a Public Inquiry by the Planning Inspectorate next year.

We welcome news that the Gratton GP Practice is to continue the scheme to allow patients to collect repeat prescriptions from the South Wonston surgery building on two afternoons per week. You can also drop in the paper order forms to save the journey to Sutton Scotney.

Register CCTV to help solve crimes If you have CCTV cameras at your business or home address, register them today with Hampshire & IOW Constabulary’s Community Portal to help us deter and solve crimes.

The service is free of charge and entirely voluntary. By registering with the Community Portal, you are not giving Hampshire & IOW Constabulary access to your CCTV system, you are purely making it easier for us to request and collect footage we may require for an investigation. The only footage we will ever have access to, is the footage you send to us.

Cheque Fraud Awareness Cheque fraud can occur in the following ways:  An individual cheque or cheque book is stolen from you.  A cheque is intercepted in the post (e.g. they are sent by post to a charity or appeal – the envelope is intercepted, cheque removed, payee changed, and paid in online).  A cheque provides criminals with your name, sort code, account number and signature – with that information they can set up a direct debit, as well as take out loans/credit in your name.  A fraudster pays you for goods/services using a stolen cheque, or deposits a fraudulent cheque into your account.

Please report cheque fraud to Action Fraud. Report lost or stolen cheque books (or missing cheques) immediately to your bank (they have a 24-hour emergency number printed on account statements).

Ask a trusted friend, neighbour or family member to:  Put the bins out (and return them) on waste collection days.  Collect any parcels left on your doorstep.  Push through letters or flyers left sticking out your letterbox.  Clear any rubbish or leaves from the front of your home that may accumulate while you’re away.

2. Remember to post holiday photos on social media when you get home, not while you’re away as this advertises that your home is empty.

3. Keep valuable items out of view from the windows.
