Remember That New School Year Feeling? Brand new, shiny shoes, ‘straight out of the packet’ white socks, uniform a bit too big and a great new pencil case! September always has that new start feel about it. School was a big part of all of our lives and we’re probably only reading this because a faithful infant teacher taught us how to string letters into words. We learnt so much at school – times tables, what the planets are called, who invented electricity and what happened at the Battle of Britain. If we were fortunate, we went to a school with a Christian focus and we learnt that there was far more to life than sentences and sums. But however good the school we went to was, we were probably left wanting answers to some of the really big questions in life, ‘What on earth am I here for?’, ‘How can I be really fulfilled?’, ‘How do I mend broken relationships?’, ‘What happens after I die?’. We find the answers to all this by`getting to know the God who made us in the first place and who came to earth as a human being, becoming the best teacher who ever lived.

He taught us that we needed forgiveness. Forgiveness for all the things in our lives that so often cut us off from God. Jesus then died a brutal death to pay the price for that forgiveness and to make eternal life a certainty for anyone who accepts that he is God and is grateful that he died in their place. Tragically, those who won’t accept that, aren’t promised this amazing life after death. All this was carefully explained by Jesus Christ himself and the Bible tells us that it’s in him, ‘all the mighty, untapped treasures of wisdom and knowledge’ can be found. If you want to be sure that you’ll enjoy eternal life, read what the best teacher who ever lived said. His followers, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John wrote it all down and reading it will provide all the knowledge we need to do life well and then to enjoy the retirement benefits of being a Christian, which are, putting it mildly, ‘out of this world’! It’s never too late to become a Christian. I read last night about a man in his 70s who was given six months to live. Once the way to find eternal life was explained to him, the months that followed, were, he said ‘the best bit of it all so far’. Ruth Guy

News from Woodmancote & Popham We celebrated our Patronal Festival for St. James Woodmancote in July with Hymns and Pimms. Rev. Rob Rees took the Service and talked about how so often, we only find out a person’s life history from the Eulogy at their funeral. So many interesting facts about this person we have known and might want to talk to them about, but of course it’s no longer possible. It often leaves me wanting to know more! Apparently, St. James was the first of Jesus’ disciples to be martyred and we learn about him through his friends in the New Testament. After the service we enjoyed Pimms and canapés in the Churchyard and what a fantastic assortment there was, for most of us it turned into our supper! The Churchyard is looking particularly smart having had several small self-sown trees on the bank at the back cut down as they were causing damp problems, also an unsafe ash tree was pollarded and Belinda Harvey took down a box hedge which had died and should probably have

come out long ago, as it looks so much better without it! Thank you Belinda! Isn’t it funny how when you see something so often, you just get used to it and when eventually you change it, you wonder why you put up with the eyesore for so long! Our Harvest Festival in September is slightly different this year. The Service is at 4pm on Sunday 24th September with a Harvest Supper to follow at Mary Wallis’s house. We hope lots of you can join us. There is also another very special Service in September at St Mary’s Micheldever, when Rev. Rob will be invested as our very own Rector on Thursday 28th September at 7pm. Please do come along to this wonderful occasion. Jane.

Donations for the Bottle Stall at the upcoming

Micheldever Festival will be very welcome. They can be left at 62 Church Street (there is a covered box on the wall next to the door in Rook Lane) - soft drinks, alcohol, sauces, condiments etc. all very gratefully received before

9 September. Thank you so much for your support.

Rowvers Clean Up On The Glorious 12th The local Rights of Way Volunteers (RoWVers) were out in force on 12th August. For some, the ‘glorious 12th’ marks the start of the grouse shooting season. For the RoWVers, it was a chance to clear a path and don our fluorescent tabards to clean up the local area. Three of the RoWVers team tackled a badly overgrown path at East Stratton. The path runs through ‘New Farm’, a derelict site with old farm buildings and barns nestled into a dell at the base of a few surrounding fields. New Farm is within easy walking distance of the Northbrook Arms; it can be approached from the North or South of its centre, making a nice loop opportunity for several local parish routes. It’s a bit spooky and a bit special. Do check it out when you get time, and enjoy the newly cleared path to walk safely around it! Five other RoWVers set about tackling some of the litter in the local area. From all directions, the roads into the village get strewn with litter, usually chucked out of cars and occasionally dumped at the roadside in fly-tipping incidents. Littering is so trashy; we can’t believe that some folk think that the world outside their car is a bin when it’s so easy to take stuff 10

home or use a bin in the village centre – the hall, the shop, the playing field car park, the bus stop, all have bins. Our volunteers sorted the rubbish from the recyclable materials we picked up and appropriately binned it. Volunteering with the RoWVers, a good, friendly crowd, is always a pleasure. Still, we’d rather spend our time cutting back what mother nature grows across paths than what careless homo-sapiens chuck out of their cars, polluting our area, disrespecting their community and the environment, and creating hazards for wildlife. If you see people dropping litter, ask them to pick it up. If you see fly‑tipping, report it. If you can spare the time, The Dever - September 2023

join the RoWVers to help keep our paths clear and our roads clean. Thanks to everyone who volunteered; truly glorious. If you’re interested in joining the RoWVers, please email Lynsey or Nigel: lynseysweeney17@gmail.com mgnige@yahoo.co.uk

Summer Barbecue at Northbrook Hall On Friday 18th August the Northbrook Hall Management Committee nervously scanned the cloud laden skies ahead of the evening’s fundraising BBQ. Would the event be well supported and was mid August a sensible date to host such an event? The fears were short lived as villagers arrived in great numbers in support – and despite the donation of a marquee the weather remained warm and dry! Entertainment was provided by Scott Walker (Wonston) who played guitar par excellence–with ever popular songs. Despite regular bookings, Northbrook Hall outgoings have not quite kept pace–so this event was organised to ‘top up the coffers’ A very successful evening enjoyed by many–since confirmed with several kind messages of appreciation. Special warm thanks must be given to all the many helpers - bartenders - cooks

(salads and buttered potatoes) and George the expert BBQ chef! So deep appreciation of their amazing efforts to Annabelle, Anita, Bob, George, Graham, Marian, Peter, Ruth and Suzy. Particular special thanks to Scott Walker for so kindly donating his time to entertain us in such a professional manner! It should be mentioned that there will shortly be a vacancy on the Northbrook Hall Committee – it’s not arduous and we’d love to hear from anyone with mildly practical or organisation skills! Do please make contact if you think you could spare us about an hour a month? The Northbrook Hall (as with our fellow two halls in the parish) exclusively depends on villagers’ help to run and operate them – there is no outside magic wand! Given the fantastic support it is proposed to make this BBQ evening an annual event - thank you all so much again! David Findley

Micheldever Youth Club Upgrades! Throughout September Street Reach will be making exciting improvements to the Youth Club space at Northbrook Hall, with support from the Parish Council, current and future members.

You are invited to get involved on Club nights to help make the space your own! Micheldever Youth Club is for young people aged 11-17 and takes place from 7pm on Monday evenings.

Please note that St Mary’s Churchyard Autumn Clear-up has changed from Saturday 23rd September to Saturday 21st October 9.30 - 12.30. 12

What Makes A Village? Not a test question but a fascinating one nonetheless. There are many elements that could make up an appropriate response depending on your personal perspective. But an aspect that will influence thinking is: what brings a community together such that it can be seen as a village rather than merely a dormitory for those with interests elsewhere? Over many centuries that aspect has been the Church. For hundreds of years village churches have been at the centre of their rural communities. Families have come together, crises have been faced and strength has been instilled through the village church. Festivities at key moments in the Church’s calendar are much enjoyed traditions. Even in this age of exotic weddings on distant beaches, the traditional celebration of two people committing their lives to each other is, for many, a highlight in their lives. The christening of the newly born is an opportunity to rejoice. Ultimately, the inevitable celebration of the life of a deceased loved one garners comfort and strength. The Church touches all our lives in many ways. In recent times, worship has become less relevant to a more secular society. Regardless

of any degree of commitment to faith, for most of us the Church is likely to play an important part at some point in our lives. Having alluded to the spiritual value of the church, St Mary’s is a treasure which provides the focus for village life in Micheldever. That responsibility encompasses the need to ensure the sustainability of the building for future generations. Capturing the importance of the interacting opportunities of our church in our lives, and those to come, in one page of The Dever is challenging. The Micheldever Parochial Church Council (PCC–responsible for the running of St Mary’s Church) have thought carefully about the future and are clear that they need more practical support from the community. Accordingly, you are invited to a community meeting in the Northbrook Hall on Monday 16th October at 7.30pm. Together we will explore the future of St Mary’s and help Micheldever PCC strengthen our very special community asset. We do hope that as many of you as possible will be able to attend.

NEWS FLASH There is still time to enter the Dever Valley Photo Competition - see page 22 for full details.

Speed Watching in Micheldever We have been asked what the people in high vis jackets, holding a hair‑dryer, are doing in the village. Some years ago a 20mph limit was introduced in Micheldever Village. It soon became apparent that this limit was being ignored by the majority of drivers. Also, no action to enforce this limit was being taken. In response to this lack of action, in September last, we contacted the Hampshire Police with a view to setting up the Micheldever Community Speed Watchers group. Initially the group (some 10 of us) had to undergo training concerning safety and the objectives of the Speed Watch, which are: • Improving the quality of life for local communities by increasing their confidence and satisfaction in the way speeding issues are dealt with • Reduce the speed of vehicles to the speed limit • Increase public awareness of inappropriate speed • Reduce death and injury on roads • Empower local people to take action on local issues

14

Also, the Parish Council kindly sponsored the purchase of high vis jackets and the ‘hair‑dryer’. This is a Velocity Speed Gun capable of accurately recording the speed of a vehicle at a distance of well over 100 metres. Typically we hold sessions once per week at various locations around the village. The details of any vehicle exceeding the speed limit (by a certain margin) are recorded and sent to the Hampshire Police. Letters, and in some cases visits by the police, are then initiated by the police. Unfortunately, the results to date show many cases of excess speeding in the 20mph limits. Speeds of over 40mph are not uncommon and we have recorded a speed of over 50mph. We have contacted the County Council with regard to other options should the Speed Watch and the forthcoming Speed Indicator Devices not result in a reduction of speeding in the village. For example, It could be that the 20mph limit signs are too far from the centre of the village? We are always seeking volunteers to join our happy crew. If you are interested please contact me on 07990 595696 or email tonypatston@gmail.com.

Please Bear in Mind that the Department of Visas and Immigration claim he has ideas above his station, having arrived into this Great Nation without the proper documentation. But what they fail to understand is that this isn’t the life that he had planned. He could no longer stay in his homeland. He’s just looking for a helping hand. His wellies are red, his duffle coat blue. He wears a wide-brimmed hat from Darkest Peru. If you should see him then here’s what to do: Please look after him. That’s all. Thank you. Brian Bilston

Volunteer Drivers in Micheldever Parish There is a list of helpful individuals that can be found in our sister publication, The Advertiser. Perhaps you didn’t know there is such a group, but the Volunteer Drivers have over the years taken many people to various appointments. It is an informal arrangement for anyone needing occasional transport, which in our rural location, can be a difficult or costly problem to solve. Our volunteers will help

anyone without the means, or for those incapacitated either temporarily or not. The list is reproduced below for convenience. It is a very simple process to become involved and new people are always welcome. If you are able to offer to be a volunteer driver please contact Amanda at deveradvertising@hotmail.com to be included in the next issue of The Advertiser.

Courgette Frittata In the last edition of the Dever I shared a courgette salad recipe. Subsequently, the weather took a turn for the worst and probably nobody wanted to have a salad. Sorry! To try to redeem myself, here is a hot dish, although it can also be eaten after it has cooled. This works as a light lunch, or as an accompaniment to a main course. Like the other recipe, you can add or subtract ingredients to your taste or use what you have available. Serves around 4 people (use bigger dish and more eggs for more people) The essentials are courgettes of any size, 4 eggs and (for me) cheese. Pre heat oven 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5 I use a round ovenproof dish around 9 inches diameter & 2-3 inches deep Fill to 2/3 with grated courgettes (don’t compress). Heat a large frying pan with 1 tablespoon of oil of your choice. Tip grated courgettes in and fry with other ingredients such as spring onions/onions,

red pepper, diced or cherry tomatoes, mushrooms until just cooked through. To make it more substantial you could also add cooked diced potato, or pre-cooked meats like ham, bacon or chicken after the other ingredients have been cooked. Some defrosted peas and/or chives stirred in just before the oven will add colour. Grease/oil the dish and add your prepared ingredients. Gently press down. Lightly beat 4 eggs with seasoning/ herbs and pour over the mixture. Add plenty of grated cheese on top. Put into the middle of the preheated oven and check after 20/25 minutes. It should be golden brown and bubbling on top! If still wobbly in the middle, cover with foil and cook for another 5-10 minutes. That’s it!!!! Left overs can be cooled and refrigerated. You could also cook this recipe in a big frying pan like a Spanish omelette and brown the top under the grill. For me, I just prefer to stick it in the oven and keep the hob and grill clear! DA

Asters A Handy Guide To Recent Name Changes Asteraceae as a family is one of the largest groups of plants containing 1,600 genera and within that, approximately 25,000 species. Asters or the Michaelmas daisies were a group of about 500 species. In order to make understanding and identifying these plants easier, taxonomists have begun to separate the genus Aster into separate groups that are more closely related Here we introduce you to some of the more popular plants and explain why and how they were split into separate groups. I promise it is not as dry as it sounds. Asters from Southern Europe such as Aster amellus (Italian Aster) and its closest relatives have kept the name Aster. Others in this group are Aster thomsonii, Aster x fricartii, Aster pyrenaeus and Aster peduncularis. Aster tripolium or sea Aster which is native to the UK has a genus all of its own and is now called Tripoleum pannonicum. This has succulent leaves and is a biennial, native to salt marshes and is very useful in coastal gardens. It grows very well from seed on sandy soil in part shade. Galatella are herbaceous perennials from Europe and Asia. Growing to between 50 and 100 cm with dense foliage. The flowers are shades of lavender to purple. Plants that originated in the Northern USA and make up the largest group, have been split off into different genera including, Doellingeria, Eurybia and Symphyotrichum (which contains the majority of the so called, Michaelmas daisies). There are other genera in this group but these are the largest. Doellingeria, are hardy, herbaceous perennials. Only one cultivated species exists under the name of Doellingera 20

unmbellata and can reach 2 meters tall and has flat topped clusters of white petalled ray florets. Eurybia are rhizomatous perennials that grow up to 1.2m tall. The flower heads are made up of ray florets with petals from white to purple arranged around a yellow disk that matures to purple. Finally, we come to the largest group, Symphyotrichum. This genus has approximately 90 species which are native to the USA and one that is native to Eurasia, Symphyotrichum cilatum. This group contains all the Michaelmas daisies, Symphyotrichum novi-belgii and Symphyotrichum novi-angliae. It also contains the smaller flowered types such as Symphyotrichum ericoides and Symphyotrichum laterifolius. Symphyotrichum novibelgii ‘Purple Dome’ The foliage of these plants can change significantly throughout the growing season and the arrangement and shape of the flower heads can be changed by environmental factors which can make identification difficult. Asters and their kin are a star of the late Summer/ Autumn garden and thrive in a sunny to part shade spot, on slightly damp, fertile soil. They will tolerate more heat, but not if the ground is very free draining. Bees are drawn to the profusion of open flowers that bloom in succession. To see just what a riot of colours these plants can bring to your garden in late summer/Autumn, visit our website at www.hardysplants.com or here on site in Freefolk. The Dever - September 2023

Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Ride+Stride, 9th Sept 2023 The day is an exceptional opportunity to discover the rich heritage of our historic church buildings, see beautiful countryside, get some exercise travelling between the churches and have fun with friends and family. Ride and Stride is a chance for you, your family and friends to visit churches, chat with church representatives and learn more about the history and heritage of the churches. You can be sure the sponsorship money you raise will be used for repairs and restoration to the churches and chapels of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. • Help to raise money for the preservation of the region’s historic churches and chapels of all denominations. These precious buildings are central to our communities and villages. • Go as a family, singly or get a group together. • Walk, cycle, drive, ride or run to as many churches in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight as you wish. Users of vehicles for the disabled are also encouraged to take part – or even use your Bus Pass!

24

If this is difficult for you, perhaps you could obtain sponsorship for another type of activity such as singing, church cleaning, or exercise biking? • Remember… Half the sum raised can go to the church you nominate, for whatever improvement or use they decide.

Jackie’s County Corner What is that black bud? For the answer - see below! The Cart and Horses junction consultation continues until the 17th September and there is an in-person exhibition at the Winchester Rugby Club in Winchester on the 5th September from 3 to 7pm. You can also see the plans and reply online if you prefer on www.hants.gov.uk, search ‘Cart and Horses junction improvements’ The two alternatives proposed are traffic lights or a roundabout. We should know the outcome of the consultation by December . Meanwhile, I have attended and spoken at several ‘Issue Specific Hearings’ (ISH) for the M3 Junction 9 Development Consent Order application. Issues have included the C&H junction, the impact of the diversions on local traffic during the construction period, predicted journey time improvements, air quality, the carbon footprint of the site /greenhouse gases emitted during construction and operation, and the impact of the landscape changes on the National Park. You can see more and listen to the hearings on the NSIP website https://infrastructure. planninginspectorate.gov.uk/projects/ south-east/m3-junction-9-improvement/ As you read this, Alresford’s Millennium path should be closed for full repairs. This will last for about five weeks, and so the path is closed for a while. I hope the resultant path will give an even surface which will last another hundred years,. From time to time, Hampshire County Council seeks your view on general county wide matters- this month the subject is the Climate Change website. 26

Called ‘Hampshire Perspectives’, you can see more and sign up on this link:https://www.hants.gov.uk/aboutthecouncil/ haveyoursay/hampshire-perspectives Whether you are a frequent or occasional rail user, please don’t forget to complete the Railway ticket office consultation! It is open to 26th September after public outcry. To respond by phone, call 0300 123 2350 or go online: www.transportfocus. org.uk/ticket-office-consultation/ Are you going to be an ‘empty nester’ this Autumn? Have you considered fostering a child? Hampshire has over 1000 children who need loving homes. The foster families are linked so you can learn from others who are more experienced, receive training and get a break now and then. See more by searching ‘fostering with Hampshire County Council’. So, lastly, the ‘black bud’ picks up sounds of Boomtown far away from the site. The Dever - September 2023

‘Receptor sites’ monitor sound levels from Boomtown at properties all across the area. If you have one, I’d be interested to hear your feedback and indeed on the impact of Car Fest for neighbours there too. Hopefully the festivals will have dry weather this year, but I know many of you have standing water near your

home after recent massive rainstorms. Please let me know if it comes into your home so I can arrange urgent action. County Councillor Jackie Porter tel/text: 07973 696 085, email: Jackie.porter@hants.gov.uk website: www.jackieporter.co.uk

City Councillors’ News The City Council has further delayed the creation of its Local Plan. This important planning document sets out where and how future development across the Winchester District can be built. Over 3,400 submissions were made during the last public consultation on the draft plan. This ended last December and even after 9 months, comments have still not been reviewed in full by the Council. The next draft of the Local Plan is delayed by 11 months, when residents will be able to comment further on the emerging plan. We are calling for the Council to allocate more resources to this essential task, as this delay has placed Winchester at risk of losing control over planning decisions. This could allow developers to challenge the current Local Plan and might allow some very unwelcome developments to be permitted. Over the next year, we expect some legal challenges from those that want to build on major sites in our Ward and around Winchester.

Good progress has been made in and around Winchester with fixing the worst of the potholes that followed the wet and frosty winter. The South end of Andover Road is much improved, but there remain many faults in our roads that need to be fixed. Please help by reporting potholes when you find them on www.hants.gov. uk or on the Your Winchester app. Many people in our Ward are dismayed by the significant increase in charges for parking in the centre of Winchester on Sundays and overnight. We continue to press the City Council to introduce reliefs for those most impacted by these increase in fees. Using car parks further from the centre, such as Chesil multi-storey or the Cattle Market, can be much cheaper.
