View from the Vicarage GOLD RUSH As I write the British athletes are being welcomed home after their hugely successful efforts representing Great Britain at the Olympics in Tokyo.

Despite an Olympics without spectators it was a huge spectacle which we all enjoyed through the eye of the TV or internet. The 22 gold medals were a wonderful tribute to the hard work of so many dedicated and committed athletes over the past five years. After Brexit and Covid and all the uncertainty engendered by those events over the past two years, winning those gold medals in Tokyo sets a new standard of achievement for us all.

The Bible speaks of gold many times.

It speaks of refiner's gold and how the unwanted aspects of the mineral are removed in the refiner’s fire. It likens this process to the working of God in our lives removing those qualities and trends which are unhelpful. Our inner selves being refined until we are made more into the image that God has planned for each one of us.

“I will refine them like silver and treat them with gold, they will call on my name and I will answer them” the prophet Zechariah says. The refining process brings us to a position where we will want to call on the name of the Lord and worship him.

Gold is a precious commodity. The community we used to work amongst in north India kept all their riches in gold attached to them. The women would pierce their ears and noses with gold rings, with gold bangles around their ankles and wrists. They literally carried their riches around with them day by day, a visible security against the cost of sickness and the unforeseen in the future.

Most of us do not have access to gold in this way but yet we can admire and give recognition to those who have represented us abroad.

September begins a new era in our spiritual life together in the Dever valley. Joined by South Wonston and planning for more integration, this is a key time for opportunities to engage with the Christian faith and to unravel those streams of gold that run through scripture. We embark on a course helping us to pray starting on September 21st and continue with our online Men’s breakfast with Prof John Wyatt speaking on Saturday 25th September.

As we relish the happy memories of the Olympics may we all be encouraged that as God’s people we can strive towards being like gold but realise as part of that process there may be hard times for us to endure as we pass through the refiner’s fire.

News from Woodmancote & Popham Woodmancott only had one service in August and we were treated to a guest speaker, Neil McSparron. The readings and sermon were all about “grumbling” and Neil tried to help us to unravel the complicated John 6 reading regarding Jesus referring to himself as the Bread of Life, whilst the crowd on the other hand, were all grumbling and waiting for their second free meal, after being fed the day before with the loaves and fishes. It was very well put together and we thank Neil for taking the time to visit St. James’.

The service was lovely and especially so, now we have Belinda Harvey back playing the organ and we are all allowed to sing once again, such a treat! I have missed singing hymns more than I realised!

We generally take so much of our life for granted. But, after lockdown, I think we have all learnt to appreciate the little

things so much more now!

We are excited to be able to hold our Harvest Festival in Church on the 19th September at 11am. This is our only service in September and will be followed

by Harvest Lunch at Mary Wallis’s house, Rownest Meadow - a much needed fund raiser. Tickets are £15 per head to include a glass of wine or £5.00 for the under 12’s.

Trapping Neutering & Re‑homing Feral Cats Hi, my name is Grace and I am trying to tackle the problem with feral & stray cats in our area. Mainly around the A33 from Larkwhistle farm road towards Popham.

I started in 2017 and so far I have trap neutered and returned or re-homed around 40 cats. I couldn’t do what I do without Cats Protection providing neutering vouchers for cats we release, and lovely local people like yourselves.

I would like to ask you if you see feral/stray cats to get in touch with me directly on 07742 752183.

Alternatively if you have spare old towels, spare cat food, litter, toys, please let me know, I can always use these and I am happy to collect them.

In the Garden – September What a challenge the weather has been!

One minute it is baking hot and the next heavy rain and strong winds. But the blue and great tits have produced large broods which are busily devouring the peanuts. Also the mistle thrushes have returned to the garden after their nest was predated and they have produced 3 very speckled youngsters.

My plan to let the grass grow long to encourage butterflies and wild life has proved to be a problem, shoulder high grass that is impossible to cut except with a scythe maybe, but I suspect Aiden Turner is too busy! Ή If you grow lavender, cut the stalks with the flowers on and hang upside down in a warm place until dry, then pull off the lavender heads and put into bags to deter moths in wardrobes and cupboards. I refill mine every year, and one can use old lace hankies tied with a ribbon, just as good as a muslin bag. Ή The wet weather has resulted in thick foliage in my apple tree, so prune out the non-fruiting branches to let in more light which helps ripen the fruit.

You can also prune apple and pear espaliers. Any large branches can be cut and stored into a log pile to encourage stag beetles and other wild life.

Ή Now is the time to take fuchsia cuttings, take a shoot just below a leaf without any flowers, about 10cm long and snip out the soft tip. Insert the cutting into a small pot filled with peat-free compost. You can take several cuttings and put them into the same pot. Place a plastic bag over the top and put the pot on a windowsill, but out of hot sun and in a few weeks you should see roots appear. Take the bag off the cuttings every couple of days to check for dead leaves and keep the soil moist. Ή Leave the heads on mophead or lacecap hydrangeas after flowering, as old blooms offer winter frost protection to tender new buds below them. Prune early to mid spring. Ή Divide established summer flowering herbaceous perennials and pot up unwanted pieces for the plant stall at this month’s fete. Ή Harvest pumpkins and squash before frosts, once the skins are evenly coloured. Cure in a warm place for 7-10 days before storing at 50-60 degrees in a well ventilated room. Ή September is a good time to think about spring and ordering from bulb catalogues, don’t leave it until they have sold out. CK

Micheldever Carbon Footprint Report: Welcome to your community’s carbon footprint report!

This report tells you about your community’s carbon1 footprint – both the scale of emissions and the main ‘activities’ responsible for the emissions.

This information comes from Impact – an online civil parish-level carbon emissions estimator: https:/impact- tool.org.uk.

It shows your community’s consumption footprint.

There are two ways of viewing a community’s carbon footprint – territorial-based or consumption-based.

A community’s consumption footprint captures all the emissions produced as a result of the ‘activities’ that the community’s residents engage in, regardless of where geographically they occur – for example, emissions resulting from the food they eat, the clothes and household items they buy, the leisure activities they engage in, their travel behaviours, and the heating of their homes. The consumption-based footprint is based on household and addresslevel data, which is then aggregated up to the community level (rather than cutting down from a higher geography as with the territorial approach).

Take your footprint as a guide, not as gospel.

The carbon footprints are modelled, drawing on data from more than 30 datasets (some of which are themselves made up of multiple further datasets!).

As with all models, decisions have been taken in terms of what data is used, and how the data is ‘cut’ and analysed. The

Impact footprints have been developed with the intention that they are as useful as possible, but remember to take them as a guide, not as gospel.

Winchester Green Week 2021 Will be part of UKs largest ever event for nature and climate If you’ve noticed the heavier and more intense summer rain along with the devastating floods in northern Europe, or the terrible forest fires across southern Europe and North America, then hopefully you’ll be inspired to take action to help fight the climate crisis that is responsible for these severe weather events.

Winchester Green Week, Winchester’s annual festival of all things ‘green’, covering issues such as the climate crisis, environmental issues and sustainable living is back this year as part of ‘The Great Big Green Week’ the largest event for nature and climate ever seen in the UK. Running from 25 September to 3 October, this year the Winchester Green Week theme is ‘growing greener together’. Running as a festival style platform for collaboration across the whole of Winchester district, the aim is to celebrate and promote action towards sustainable living.

Winchester Green Week has grown significantly in past years and despite the challenges of 2020, over 30 organisations from community groups, faith groups, local businesses, charities and the local authority put on over 65 socially distanced events or created digital resources.

Over 1,500 visits to the Winchester Green Week website during Green Week 2020 demonstrated the large number of residents across Winchester district looking to take action towards a more sustainable life. Contributing organisations take responsibility 12

for the organisation, cost and insurance of their own events whilst the Winchester Green Week team advise, coordinate and advertise.

Among events planned for Winchester Green Week 2021 are: • Winchester Food Partnership Day • Winchester Climate Action Network climate action planning workshops • Winchester City Council HEP Committee meeting • Winchester Cathedral ‘Rise to the Moment’ service • 7 week course on Green Living • ‘A cry from our hearts for our common home’ an artistic expression • Multiple events hosted by Winchester University Winchester Action on Climate Change are hoping to coordinate a ‘Sing for the Climate’ event on Saturday 2 October and are looking for groups to participate in this mass singing event, demonstrating the strength of feeling that more action needs to happen now in the fight against climate change.

The Questor The Wild Gospel..… ….. a date with the Emperor So, in spite of the exhortations by his friends and the warnings by the Holy Spirit, Paul returned to Jerusalem.

The last eight chapters of Acts of the Apostles describe in great detail what happened next and it’s a riveting read.

When he got to Jerusalem, Paul received a very warm welcome from the members of the church; and they were overjoyed to hear about all that had happened during his travels. But they were apprehensive because some of the Jews in the city were very suspicious of him since they believed he had turned his back on the Jewish law. So the elders of the church suggested that he should participate in a rite of purification at the Temple as a means of demonstrating to the Jews that he hadn’t abandoned their law.

This took place during the Feast of Pentecost when Jews from all over the known world were in Jerusalem on pilgrimage. One day, while Paul was in the Temple, a Jew from Ephesus recognised him and made a huge fuss, saying that Paul had spoken against the Jews when he was in Ephesus. There was an outcry and the people dragged Paul out of the Temple and started beating him up. The Roman commander heard about this and brought a posse of soldiers to arrest him.

The Roman authorities were fairly liberal with the communities they incorporated into their empire; but the one thing they wouldn’t allow was any kind of insurrection. The people were going crazy so the commander ordered his men to take Paul to the barracks and told them to flog him and interrogate him. When 16

Paul told them he was a Roman citizen, the commander was very worried because he wasn’t allowed to treat a Roman citizen this way. So the next day he released Paul and arranged a meeting between Paul and the Jewish religious leaders – the same ones that had condemned Jesus to death.

That meeting didn’t go well and ended in uproar. Things became so violent that the Roman commander took Paul into custody for his own safety. The next day the Jewish leaders hatched up a plot to kill Paul. But Paul got to hear of it and passed the information to the Romans. So the commander arranged to transfer Paul into the custody of the Governor, Felix, in Caesarea. He provided an armed escort of 470 men and wrote to Felix to explain the situation.

Felix kept Paul under house arrest and invited the Jewish leaders to come and make their case against him. Both sides presented their case but Felix was unable to decide. He sent the Jews away and kept Paul under house arrest for two years.

Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus who went through the whole process again, getting the Jewish leaders to come and state their case. At the end of the meeting, Festus asked Paul if he would be willing to stand trial in Jerusalem. Paul knew that this would be dangerous so he played the Roman citizen card one last time and appealed to be tried in Caesar’s court in Rome.

Festus couldn’t refuse that request so he sent Paul to Rome under armed guard.

They travelled by sea and the journey was long and fraught with danger The Dever–September 2021

because they were travelling at the end of September when the weather starts to deteriorate. Paul warned the crew and the Roman centurion that things could go badly and the ship would be lost. But the centurion was keen to get to Rome, so he insisted that they should carry on.

After fourteen days and nights at sea, being driven by a strong north easterly wind, they were at the end of their tether.

On the morning of the fifteenth day, they saw land and did their best to sail into a sandy bay. Unfortunately there was a sand bar and the ship ran aground and started to break up. So they all jumped into the sea and made their way to the beach – and everyone survived.

Once safely ashore, they found that they were on the island of Malta where they stayed for three months until the weather was fit for sailing again.

They left Malta in an Alexandrian ship

and, after two or three weeks, arrived in Rome where Paul was again put under house arrest with a soldier to guard him. He lived like that for two years and people were able to visit him quite freely.

During that time, he continued to preach the Message of Jesus to all who would listen. And, despite his failing eyesight, he wrote many letters to the churches he had founded and to the key people that he depended upon to continue his work.

In due course he was tried by the emperor, Nero, the last in the line of Caesars. He was imprisoned and subsequently executed, probably beheaded in the manner reserved for Roman citizens.

So ended the life of a great man who had faithfully carried out the work that Jesus had commissioned him to do – against all the odds.

From Our MP, Steve Brine Parliament has, in recent weeks, been debating a major new Health and Care Bill.

Drawing on my experience, I have been highlighting the need to address long term structural gaps in staffing to back up commitments made in the NHS tenyear plan and to tackle the NHS Covid backlog. We have years of workforce challenge to face and it is THE big ticket item on the desk of the new head of NHS England, Amanda Pritchard.

As the Commons returns for the Autumn term, I and others are calling for a requirement on the Government to publish modelling of the future supply of the entire health and care workforce; and I reiterate my belief in an immigration policy that recognises, not curtails, the unique circumstances across health and social care.

On primary care, I welcome the formal creation of new Integrated Care Systems (which will remove the silos that exist) and feel we need them to realise their potential fast. What do I mean by that?

the wider primary care family and that means realising the potential of community pharmacy, ophthalmology and dental services as vehicles of prevention as much as treatment.

And moving upstream of the Bill, I am clear it has to be all about prevention. We hear regularly now talk of a waiting list touching 13m people but we hear less of addressing poor health at source. So I enthusiastically support measures in the legislation to face up to the obesity challenge; driving as it is incidence of cancer, heart disease and diabetes among others.

Secondly, the back end of 2021 is going to be dominated by the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow this November. It’s a landmark moment and I hope to be there working with colleagues from the Conservative Environment Network.

At COP26, we will (among other things) ask countries to commit to net zero by mid-century, with more ambitious nationally determined contribution targets for 2030 and to urgently protect and help adapt our

communities and natural habitats from the destructive effects of climate change.

forces which has just been published.

Micheldever & Stratton Pre School Moving ON What a busy month it has been, we have been so lucky to have had some exciting news that we are leaving our old setting and moving on to pastures new. From September we will be operating from The Warren Centre at Micheldever Station and we can’t wait to be a formal part of the community. We are extra lucky because we will be able to utilize all the benefits that Micheldever Station brings, the open fields, the local businesses, the train station and the ability that we can open for longer five days a week.

We will also be running some Forest School activities from the woods running beside the hall, what an amazing opportunity it is for the children, their families, the staff and the local community. We are so very excited that we can still offer this service and that what a better time to move on and have so much fun. We have lots of exciting activities planned for the next term and we can’t wait for this to start. We will be reopening on Monday the 6th of September 2021.

We will also be looking forward to our OPEN DAY on Sunday the 5th of September 2021 from 1pm – 3pm. This is a great opportunity for us to be able to show you all around our new setting and for your children to take part in some of the activities we will have on offer. Please do come along, say hello to us and find out who we are, what we do and what we can offer your little ones and yourselves. We look forward to welcoming you all in a few weeks time.

Citizens Advice Winchester District I’ve heard that Universal Credit is going to be cut from September. I struggle to get by as it is and I’m really worried that if I lose £20 a week, I’ll get into serious debt. I’m already behind on some of my bills. What can I do to avoid things getting worse?

You’re not alone in this - there is support available.

Firstly, depending on your situation, you might be able to ask to have your Universal Credit paid differently these are called ‘alternative payment arrangements’. This might be an option if you’re in debt or rent arrears, among other reasons. To apply for an alternative payment arrangement, call the Universal Credit helpline on: 0800 328 5644 If you’re behind on some of your bills, the first step is to make a list of how much you owe and add up how much you need to pay each month.

You now need to prioritise your debts. Some bills can cause you more problems than others if you don’t pay them. Rent or mortgage arrears, energy bills and council tax are your priority debts as there can be serious consequences if you don’t pay them.

Be sure to get in touch with the organisations you owe money to.

Not everyone feels confident to do this, but they might be able to help by letting you pay smaller amounts or taking a break from payments.

Many organisations have put in place protections for people who’ve struggled to pay their bills during the pandemic.

The government-backed Breathing Space scheme could also give you extra time.

City Councillors’ News City Councillors spent 4 evenings over the summer finding out more about what could be done locally to address the challenges of climate change. We cannot, as individuals, deliver the changes that most scientists agree are needed.

Encouraging and enabling businesses and individuals to all take practical and sensible measures is top of our agenda.

Publicising effective local initiatives – like the Facebook group South Wonston Recycling – will help everyone to save resources (and, often, save money) that could otherwise be wasted.

All 3 of us have been in discussions with Littleton residents and with officers from the City and County Council about the latest development proposals for Flowerdown Barracks. Protection of the natural heritage of the fields to the North of the barracks and the quiet rural character of Littleton itself are major concerns. We accept building on a previously developed site like the barracks but it should not lead to the loss of pristine countryside that so many of us value.

Recovery from the pandemic lockdown continues, with most local businesses now starting to re-open, although many still need our support. As expected,

traffic restrictions in Winchester, including those in Hyde Street and North Walls, have been removed.

The further delay in completing the first phase of drainage works to the underpass on Overton Road, Micheldever Station, under the A303 has been stopped during the summer. Work should re-start in early September, which will include several more weeks of road closures.

Southern Water have confirmed that they will be giving an update to Wonston Parish Council at their meeting on 8th September about the on-going problems with the Water Treatment Works by Saddlers Close in Sutton Scotney.

Parish Councils are now holding meetings in person details are on their websites. Jackie Porter's Country Corner As we move out of the formal Covid-19 restrictions, it’s an opportunity to read, learn and reflect on our attempts to build a greener world after the pandemic. I know many Parishes and individuals are considering how they can improve their green credentials: I hope that this month’s items may be of interest.

WinACC has set up the WASH project: Winchester Area SuperHomes.

It’s an exciting new project which is aimed at reducing domestic energy use in our homes across the District. It supports homeowners to transform the energy performance of their properties by retrofitting and so reduce their carbon emissions. To find out more, and book a video call or home visit, email wash@winacc.org.uk Retrofitting means changing your home so it needs less energy to keep warm, and changing the heating from gas, oil or solid fuel to electric. There are lots of ways to do this– from insulating walls, ceilings and floors to installing technologies like heat pumps.

The cost of recycling is counteracted by the value of the material. Glass is mainly recycled abroad but there is a new project to recycle glass in the same town as the original Pilkington glass factory .This is a good news green growth story. If you have a good idea to save waste in your community or further afield, you can apply for a grant from the County Council. For simplicity, I have shortened the link to https://tinyurl.com/greenerhampshire Pre-loved clothes have a value and you can recycle them at a variety of places.

Bring-to sites are popular, raising funds for many organisations such as The Fire Service or Winchester’s Hospice. If the bin is full, please don’t leave items out in the rain- they’ll be of little value, but report the full bin and return a few days later.

It is a distressing fact that around 1 in 8 children are now living in poverty in Hampshire. As a member of the Winchester Food Partnership, we’re keen to see more parents of young children taking up the Healthy Start vouchers worth £4.25 a week for food and vitamins.

Unfortunately currently, only half of those that are eligible do this. More about this on http://tinyurl.com/healthystart2021 In October, I will be holding ‘Drop In surgeries’ around the division to help parents sign up to the new online process for these vouchers. If you are interested, please contact me to book a convenient time slot. The vouchers will be replaced with a card to credit parent-shoppers when they buy healthy foods up to a value of £4.25. Some shops, eg; Iceland, offer free ‘healthy extras’ too. Also, anyone can join the ‘Pantry’ at Unit 12 at Winnall, where £15 worth of food can be purchased for £5 on a weekly basis. This can be used in addition to any other scheme.

included an award to help victims of Domestic Abuse, a greener living idea and a Memorial. If a County Councilor grant would be of use to your organisation, please contact me direct so that we can talk over your plans before you apply.
