View from the Vicarage The EMMA factor Most of us won’t forget in a hurry that moment at 11.15 at night that Emma Raducanu won the American Open Tennis Championship.

We found it difficult to believe that this attractive, articulate 18 year old school girl had just moved through the qualifying rounds and one by one picked off the greatest names in women’s tennis to win the championship.

It was an almost unbelievable story and gave us all great joy amidst all the tough news we were coping with at home and abroad at that moment. Things like this just don’t happen in normal life – but yes they can! It was a great uplift for everybody.

CS Lewis wrote one of his many books “Surprised by Joy”.

Brought up in Belfast he openly and honestly in the book traces his life long search for joy. It took him from school to university at Oxford and eventually into becoming one of the most able 20th century exponents of Christian living.

He admits as he came to faith that it was through being guided and surprised by joy that he found God for himself. Finding God for him was finding in Jesus the perfect solution to all the challenges he was to face in his long life.

Others come to joy in different ways. William Wordsworth, the poet, wrote about joy some time after losing his 4 year old daughter Catherine in 1812.

The very memory of her, the images of her that he retained in his mind and memory, the very reality of her passing and departure gave him joy.

We may find it hard to think of some like Wordsworth who find joy through the pain of death and separation. We may even find it difficult to empathise with CS Lewis who in his early life struggles faced great uncertainties but who eventually found joy and peace by putting his faith in God. Jesus reminds us in Luke 6 :22 that as Christians we will be misunderstood, excluded and insulted. However, He says we are to rejoice in that day and leap for joy because great is our reward in heaven. There is great joy in being part of the Christian family but we should not expect that joy always to be founded in an easy or happy experience.

I do hope you will take time to celebrate God’s goodness to us as we enjoy the harvest festival season together.

Safari Supper The 20th Safari Supper finally took place on 11th September, having been postponed three times due to the Covid Outbreak. The changes of dates meant that fewer people were able to attend this time – we missed you and hope you will join us for the next one. Despite lower numbers, the event was a great success.

With three courses in three homes, it was lovely to meet so many villagers, especially after we have been so isolated for the past year. The event was attended by those who have been regulars since the outset twenty-one years ago, to people who have joined the village recently, some only in the last fortnight!

After the meal we all met up at Ramblers in Hawthorn Close, kindly hosted by

Marian and Torquil Jack, to exchange stories and drink coffee.

Thanks must go to all of our cooks for the evening, some of whom sent meals even though they couldn’t attend – which was very much appreciated.

The event raised in excess of a thousand pounds- much needed funds for St Mary’s Church Fabric Fund. The final count with gift aid is still taking place.

We look forward to the next one in 2022 – more information will follow!

Joyce Keenan's Birthday Surprise!

On 11th September Joyce Keenan was the guest of honour at a surprise party to celebrate her 100th birthday. It was secretly organised by her daughter Karen Clarke who lives in Stubbington.

There were so many well wishers

and wonderful presents that she was hardly able to thank everyone for their kindness at the time. So, she would like to extend her heartfelt thanks to everyone involved, for their generosity, and for making it such a special day for her.

practices, and creating opportunities for people to better understand where the food they eat comes from and how it’s grown or made.

Whilst the emissions from a food item can really vary depending on how it is grown or reared, it is clear that animal products, and most significantly beef and lamb, account for the largest proportion of food-related emissions.

Goods & Services All goods that we buy will have had carbon emitted in their making (including the sourcing of raw materials), packaging, shipping and sale. Without clear carbon labelling, it is difficult to know the scale of emissions resulting from each item, but it is clear that with every new product made, more carbon is emitted (and more resources are extracted and sourced – which itself can have huge environmental and social impacts). Reducing how many new goods we buy in the first place is the best place to start in terms of reducing goods-related emissions; and then of course re-using and repairing items where goods are needed.

Carbon emissions from the services we use will relate to the energy used by that service provider (e.g. heating in a leisure centre, pub or hospital), as well as the carbon emitted as a result of goods they buy and use (e.g. gym equipment, vehicle repair machinery).

Waste The waste ‘wedge’ in your carbon footprint may look small, but remember

that emissions from the management of waste represent a small fraction of the total emissions associated with every item that ends up in our bins or recycling boxes. So reducing waste in the first place is critical.

Wonston Community Café Following our Welcome Back session in September, the café will be open again at the Victoria Hall, Sutton Scotney, on Wednesday 20th October 9.30am – 12 noon (last orders 11.45am).

This month the café will be raising funds for Blood Cancer UK.

The café is run entirely by volunteers, who also provide lots of homemade cakes. There is plenty of free parking so do come along and join us for tea/ coffee, cake and a chat. Future dates are 17th November–Little Hearts Matter; 15th December–Christmas charity TBC Janis Kinnell

Micheldever Village Shop The necessary adjustments to the shop building and the car park area have been completed. Winchester City Council (Building Control) now only have to pass the building

and Rajeev will be in a position to complete the purchase of the shop.

It is reasonable to assume that the shop should be trading at the latest by the end of October. RV

Hedgehogs Hi neighbours, We have a thriving community of hedgehogs at this end of the village, up to 8 visit our feeding station each evening.

As we get towards bonfire night/winter, please can everyone consider providing safe hibernation places in their gardens, be aware of hibernating hedgehogs prior to November 5th or at the very least, drive slowly after dusk when hedgehogs are active.

If anyone is interested in encouraging them, we find calci worms are a particular favourite food.

Micheldever School News for October A very big welcome back and well done for such a successful start for all of our pupils at Micheldever C of E Primary School. It has been wonderful for us as a school to resume some of the activities that we have not been able to do throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Whole school worships, singing together, eating lunch together and having playtimes altogether have been particular highlights for us as a school.

It has also been a pleasure to watch our older children become ‘buddies’ once again with our new Reception pupils and to help them settle into school life.

Our older children do a superb job of calming and comforting and being a reassuring presence for new pupils on the playground. Our new reception children have settled in very well to life in the Micheldever family and we are delighted to have them with us. They are so very welcome in our school. It has also been a pleasure for us to welcome a number of new families into our school community, all of whom have had a positive impact on our community already.

Our learning has got off to a very exciting start as well. From the stone age to explorers, from changing the world through curiosity and learning all about ourselves, the wide and varied curriculum learning is engaging all our pupils and there is an excited buzz around the school with regards to learning.

It has also been very exciting for our Year 3/4 pupils to go swimming each week.

As we look forward as a school and community to the coming year, personally I am filled with much excitement for the future. Our school community is going from strength to strength as we grow together. We are now looking for how we can impact and support our local community as well. If you have any thoughts or suggestions about local projects or initiatives, please do let us know at school as we would love to be involved. We would also love to invite any families who are interested in their child joining us in Year R in the 2022/23 academic year to attend our open mornings on 20th October and 29th November from 9:30 – 11:30.

The Questor The Wild Gospel..… ….. In the Power of The Spirit We’ve spent the last 18 months working our way through the Acts of the Apostles and it’s an amazing story. It reads like an historical novel – but it’s true!

In the space of 30 years, the Christian church went from having tens of members to tens of thousands.

Now we’ve come to the end of the book, it’s worth reflecting on what we’ve read.

The first thing to note is that the people who made it happen were men and women like us. Some of them had special gifts like Paul the religious scholar; and others were from ordinary backgrounds like Peter the fisherman. But whoever they were, they all relied on the power of God’s Holy Spirit to do what they did – how else could such people achieve all this!

The second thing is that it wasn’t easy.

In the musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, the disciples sing a song when they’ve had a few drinks at the Passover meal.

It has a wistful chorus that goes: Always thought that I’d be an apostle Knew that I could make it if I tried Then when we retired, we could write a gospel So they’d all talk about us when we died.

Well, it didn’t work our quite like that did it! According to tradition, all of them except John were killed: • In 44AD, King Herod ordered James the Greater to be thrust through with the sword. He was the first of the apostles to be martyred.

• Andrew was crucified on a diagonal cross.

• Doubting Thomas was speared in India.

• Philip was crucified in Turkey, and preached from the cross with his dying breath.

• Matthew was stabbed in the back in Ethiopia.

• Peter was crucified upside in Rome.

As we’ve seen, Paul writes to the Christians at Corinth: Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked. I spent a night and a day in the open sea. In my frequent journeys, I have been in danger from rivers and from bandits, in danger from Jews and non Jews, in danger in the city and in the country, in danger on the sea and among false brothers,…

And he ended his days being executed on the orders of the Emperor Nero.

The third thing to note is that we must carry on the work. Doctor Luke documented the life of Jesus in his gospel and then recorded much of what went on during the thirty years after Jesus’ death in Acts of the Apostles. And he must have been driven to do this because of the importance of the events he recorded to all of us who follow.

At the end of his gospel, John went further and wrote: “This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true….”

Later, at the beginning of his first letter he writes: “We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard….”

As we read those words, it’s impossible not to feel the depth of John’s concern that the reader should take what he has written seriously. John had been one of the witnesses to what Jesus did and said and Luke had seen what happened since Jesus was raised from death. And they both want to be sure we believe their testimony and continue what they started so that the sacrifice made by Jesus and his followers was not for nothing.

So what does this all mean for us in our present generation? We feel at times that it’s a real struggle to take the Message of Jesus to our communities and draw people into the church. But it can’t be harder for us than it was for

those early Christians and for the many Christian martyrs down the ages.

So what’s the difference? It’s surely that they did everything In the Power of the Spirit.

Jesus knew that his disciples were fallible people with ordinary human traits and that they would be unable to carry on what he had started without help. So at the end of his life on earth he promised to send the Holy Spirit to help and guide them and all others who followed them. As a result, those guys had it in abundance – and we could have it too if we want it and ask for it.

So what are we waiting for?

In the Garden – October Autumn has arrived, quietly so far, and the farmers are busy sowing their crops for next year.

The hedges are laden with blackberries and sloes, maybe signs of a hard winter to come, and I have noticed late hatchings of blackbirds and robins, enjoying the autumn harvest of berries.

There has also been a sudden influx of house spiders, notably in the baths and sinks but also seen scuttling across the carpet. They come every year and there are various herbs one can put down to discourage them, but I always use a few conkers placed in the corner of a room. The leatherjackets, or Daddy Longlegs, are hanging from the ceilings but are quite harmless and provide food for the birds too.

My theme this month is about gardening for wildlife, and caring for them over the hard winter months.

Spread some fallen leaves under

your shrubs and onto flower beds where they can slowly rot down into a mulch, providing food and shelter for invertebrates and thus blackbirds and thrushes.

Don’t be in a hurry to cut back all your hedges but leave seeds from ivy and hawthorn and put out high energy foods such as fat balls on your bird feeders.

Try not to disturb your compost heap through the winter, it might be a haven for a hedgehog.

Clean out your old nesting boxes ready for spring, they provide a shelter on cold nights for birds and ponds too need cleaning out.

Clean out the greenhouse and put up insulation; prepare to move tender plants into it before the hard frosts strike.

Spray roses that were badly affected by blackspot and mildew in late summer and clear up fallen leaves to stop spores lingering. CK

Proposal to Create a Wetland in Micheldever Following positive feasibility surveys, Winchester County Council are planning to develop a passive wetland to generate nitrates credits for their planning applications because the land outlined is not suitable for housing development due to flood risk. The scheme will also benefit local residents by providing an improved visual amenity and significant environmental benefits including increasing biodiversity by creating valuable wildlife habitats.

Aquascience – wetland ecology specialists – have designed the scheme, image copied below.

Essentially, the plan is to: • Divert water from the east of the council’s land from the ditch behind the houses in Barron Close • Channel water through a series of four scrapes / unlined ponds that will filter the water • Return cleaner water (nitrogen removed) to the carrier stream to the north of the council’s site

The water in the ditch contains effluent from the sewage treatment works and is already safe but by filtering through the wetland will remove more nitrogen and generate credits.

Winchester Housing Trust were contacted and there is general support for the scheme. The design includes laying a small section of pipe under scrubland owned by WHT, behind their houses in Barron Close; this will help because there is minimal fall across the site.

The wetland and pipes will be maintained by the council and if there is a blockage and / or if there is very heavy rainfall, water will just revert to its original course – flowing into the carrier stream via the pond that would be bypassed just north of the site. The report explains how the scheme will alleviate flooding by increasing the flood storage capacity on the site.

Next steps include sharing these plans with the local community before applying for planning permission and watercourse consent.

From Our MP, Steve Brine Many constituents will know that I like to keep busy during Parliament’s Summer recess with my Summer Tour and 2021 was no different.

This year, Monty the pup and I held events right across the constituency.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by.

We are grateful also to the many local residents who took the time to respond to my major environment survey. We have had thousands back and will be in touch with you all but it has been a brilliant exercise and given me a real sense of your priorities – local and national – as we step up our response to the climate crisis and move ever closer to COP26 this Winter.

You can take part at greenwinchester.com One subject I don’t need to canvass opinion about through surgeries or surveys – at least in so much as we need change – is social care.

So many of you have told me we need to “fix” social care but, of course, that is easier said than done which is one reason why it’s eluded Government’s for the best part of twenty years.

Our return to Westminster for the new term last month arrived with a bang and constituents will not have missed the £36bn fund to help the NHS scale its Covid backlog and lay the foundations

for a new health and care offer.

No-one is pretending this is easy – politically in the decision to put up taxes or practically in helping the millions of people on the waiting list/putting in place a social care system that works. But, as I said in Parliament, we’re not in Government to do nothing for fear of offending anyone and this nettle HAD to be grasped.

Finally, and this is of course linked in many respects, I am returning to a subject close to home – our ongoing battle against breast cancer. Some of you may remember I chaired the all-party group for many years, and of course had the chance to be our Cancer Minister in Government.

But the task is bigger than ever and the recent heart-breaking death of Girls Aloud member Sarah Harding (at just 39) reminds us all how lethal it remains.

I am going to be working with my colleagues in Government, at NHS England and local clinicians to do what I can to fightback and raise awareness among my constituents. We are not alone.

City Councillors’ News The installation of a collection bin at the South Wonston pavilion allows cartons and other waxed cardboard to be recycled.

Plastic containers and wrapping is being collected at Sainsburys in Badger Farm.

Do let us know of other local measures that you hear about. County Councillor Jan Warwick, who leads the County Council’s efforts to address the climate emergency, has been briefing local councillors and military staff at Worthy Down on local action being taken to protect and improve the environment.

The reduction in the number of planning officers at the City Council seems to be reducing the effectiveness of the Planning Enforcement function.

This has delayed work around Carousel Park and elsewhere, so we are escalating the issue in several ways.

We have met with more agencies about plans for the development of Flowerdown Barracks. Protection of the natural heritage of the fields to the North of the barracks and the quiet rural character of Littleton itself are major concerns. We fully support the proposal from the Parish Council to establish a nature reserve to the North of the

barracks to protect the local environment.

More Government grants have been offered through the City Council to local businesses to help recover from the pandemic lockdowns. Most businesses are now starting to re-open, although many still need our support.

Southern Water postponed giving an update in September about the problems with the Water Treatment Works by Saddlers Close in Sutton Scotney. The presentation is now expected in the next few weeks. We are pressing for action to resolve this long-running problem that is affecting many residents.

Parish Councils are now holding meetings in person - details are on their websites. Their next meetings are on: Micheldever PC - Wednesday 6th October at Warren Hall, Micheldever Station Wonston PC - Wednesday 13th October at Victoria Hall, Sutton Scotney South Wonston PC - Monday 11th October at South Wonston Pavilion.

All meetings start at 7.30pm.

Autumn in Art and Literature Close your eyes and think of Autumn.

Almost certainly, it is the russet and gold colours of Autumn leaves which come to mind. But in John Keats’ Ode to Autumn there is not a single mention of leaves. Instead, there are wonderful descriptions of many of the other characteristics of Autumn, from ripening apples ready for the cider press to swelling gourds and bees feasting on the late flowers. The first line is one of the most memorable in English poetry : “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness”.

One of the joys of Autumn is relishing the last warm days before the chill of Winter. The bees think that the warm days will last forever but the “wailful choir” of gnats and the bleat of fullygrown lambs suggest the change in weather which will come. We have all seen the departure of the swallows and house martins, whose arrival has heralded the arrival of summer. Now, the “gathering swallows twitter in the sky” as they prepare for their long journey south.

Keats composed Ode to Autumn as he walked along the river from Winchester to St. Cross. It is one of the so-called “Great Odes” which include Ode to a Nightingale and Ode on a Grecian Urn. They were published in 1820 when Keats was just 24.

The following year he travelled to Rome hoping that the Mediterranean air would

cure his consumption. Sadly, he was dead within weeks. If he had survived to a greater age, we can only imagine the sort of work he would have produced.

He was insecure about his own literary merit and uncertain whether his poems would survive him. He asked for his grave in Rome to be inscribed “Here lies one whose name was writ in water”. He need have had no doubts: he is one of the great poets of the English language.

To complete this short series on The Seasons in Art and Literature, I have chosen another painting by Peter Bruegel the Elder. You may remember the cold greys and whites of Bruegel’s Hunters in the Snow. In the autumnal The Harvest, owned by the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the rich yellows and ochres fill the painting with warmth. You can almost feel the tiredness of the harvesters after a hard day of scything and binding sheaves. On the right of the picture, a woman gathers ripe apples. In the distance, boats are sailing to unknown destinations. The church, partially hidden behind a tree, is an important part of the lives of the hard-working peasants.

Jackie’s County Corner for October I’ve included two pictures this month: The picture of the ‘yellow brick road’ is not of The Watercress Way, but a section of the new cycle path from Worthy Down south towards the Water Treatment site off the Andover road.

It’s a fantastic surface, and the section that is done is a credit to Hampshire County Council who have constructed it, but unfortunately, it doesn’t reach all the way to Winchester yet. I am continuing to press for this route to be completed and I’d welcome your views.

Two applications for waste transfer sites which would affect my division required comment in September. I objected to the revised Ecogen application, 21/00832/ HCS, which still doesn’t address the road safety and access issues, and the vibration, noise, dust and pollution issues for residents and I know many of you will have objected too.

The second application, for the Road Planings site 20/01188/HCS, which has provided a new option for transport away from Christmas Hill, has limitations too, and the new route has an impact on the new cycle path shown in the picture. You can see my 22

response to both applications on both the County Council and my website.

The County Council is preparing the budget for 2022-23 and it inevitably includes cuts. I’m pleased to see that the proposal to cut the school crossing patrols budget has gone: if we want children to walk to school, they must be helped to cross busy roads safely.

There are a number of Consultations this Autumn: the proposal for the County Deal (similar to the Mayoral deal) will go out in early October. I’ll give notice of others as they arrive.

There’s still no news of the New Hospital Consultation, but it was a huge pleasure to visit the Winchester Hospice on its open weekend. Huge thanks to every one of the fund-raisers, NHS staff and Trustees.

It will support residents as inpatients and whilst using their Hospice at Home service. Please continue to support them

now the building is up and runningthey need £1/2 million per year. You can donate online- or maybe run an event?
