View from the Vicarage As I write this, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and everywhere around me is lush and green; our valley is a spectacularly beautiful place. I wonder if, like me, this beauty sometimes makes you contemplate creation? Maybe you too wonder how it came to be, marvel at how all the different elements coincided to make our “Goldilocks” planet – a planet where the conditions are just right, and life can thrive.

As a Christian, I believe that this was not just chance. The Bible tells us that “in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth”. I believe in a God who made the world, carefully crafting those many different conditions to create exactly the right balance to support life. The odds of this happening without a Creator are – it seems to me – vanishingly small.

Also as I write this, climate scientists have predicted that global temperatures will rise by more than 2.5C this century, with catastrophic consequences for life on earth. When I read such things, the future can seem bleak and scary.

But as a Christian I know that there is hope. I believe in a God who not only made the world, but who is intimately concerned with all that happens here.

The Bible tells us that God’s unending love is demonstrated best by Jesus, who chose to become a human and live among us, dying for us to bring us back into a right relationship with God. God has not just created the world and left us to it, then; God cares about what happens here and wants the best for us. A great man of God, Jeremiah, wrote about 2,600 years ago to a group of oppressed, despairing refugees, telling them that the Lord has “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

I believe that God is saying the same over us today. No matter how bleak the future may appear, God is at work. The same God who made the entire universe loves and cares for each one of us, and because of that there is always hope, and because of that we always have a reason to work for the renewal of the world.

So I encourage you to enjoy the beauty of this season, trusting that God will give us hope and a future. And if you want to get to know that God and find out more about that hope, we would love to welcome you to any of our seven churches across the Dever Valley.

News from Woodmancote & Popham The Rogation Walk this year was accompanied by perfect weather, not too hot and not too cold. Maybe that is why we had the splendid turn out of 37 “Rogationers” and several dogs! Mrs Dinesen generously lent the shoot trailer and Peter Crosswell kindly let us walk some tracks which are not public footpaths, which enabled us to see different views from around the village.

Rev. Rob Rees led us in prayer, whilst Linda Albin guided us walking. Dick Albin expertly drove the tractor/trailer for those who needed a lift for some of the way and transported everyone from Popham Pond over to West Farm. At the farm Jemima,

Tillie and Alfie Liddiard delighted us with their ponies, sheep and lambs. Of course Rogation wouldn’t be Rogation without a delicious afternoon tea and once again we want to thank Kate and Nick Allen for allowing us to use their lovely garden to sit and enjoy a well deserved rest. Finally it was a quick march, to walk off some of those calories and because we’d spent far too long eating cake, back to Woodmancote Church and another very successful Rogation Walk was finished.

If you missed this year, maybe next year you might fancy coming along.

On the 16th June at 3pm we have our Pet Service with tea afterwards. Please do come and join us with your pets! Last year we mustered up 2 horses, an assortment of dogs plus 2 puppies and a chinchilla–can we improve on that this year I wonder?

Winchester Prison The Dever Valley Local History Society was delighted to welcome Liz Kavanagh who gave a talk on The History of Winchester Prison, which was opened in 1849.

Rising crime was a big concern in Victorian Britain. Offences rose steadily from 5,000 a year in 1800 to 20,000 in 1840. A common punishment was deportation to America, Australia or Tasmania, quite frequently for a comparatively trivial offence. One example was a young law student who was sent to Australia for stealing books. He went on to have a successful life and a large family.

Life in an English prison was hard, much of the sentence was spent in isolation or being forced to do hard labour. Men and women were expected to work long hours.

Their tasks included oakum picking, mat making, and weaving as well as cleaning the prison and carrying out general prison maintenance. Those who failed to fully engage with the daily tasks could expect their meagre ration to be halved.

The ultimate punishment was Execution by Hanging, carried out as a gruesome public spectacle at Winchester Prison until this was prohibited by The Capital Punishment Amendment Act of 1868. Public hangings continued until 1902. The hospital was already built opposite, private hangings within the prison continued until 1965 when the death penalty for murder was suspended.

It was permanently abolished in 1969.

Today the prison is run by 280 staff including 164 Prison Officers. There is considerable support from the local public which was particularly evident during the recent Covid pandemic. There has been a county jail in Winchester since at least

the 13th century. Initially it was situated in the High Street moving to the castle at various times. Westgate was used as a Debtors Prison until it closed in 1785.

Graffiti can still be seen on some of its walls. The Old Gaolhouse in Jewry Street was built for debtors in 1805. Winchester Prison as it is today opened in 1849, it was built for 385 inmates. Its maximum capacity today is 690. Treadmills were used as a punishment with prisoners required to hold a heavy metal bar aloft for hours at a time as officers turned the screw on the machine to make it harder. Hence the nickname ‘screws’ for prison guards.

In 1895 The Gladstone report indicated that a prison sentence should aim to reform as well as punish. Education would be provided for everyone, also access to the library and the church, and medical treatment became available as a hospital wing was added to the prison, also an exercise yard and a gymnasium.

Many prisoners today have mental health problems, and the constant modern problem is drug supply and addiction. Life continues to be a challenge for inmates and prison staff, but it is not as harsh as it used to be.

There is an air of positivity for all concerned.

The Links Between Micheldever and Hyde From stones to bones as SWING Rioter Henry Cook is remembered

by Edward Fennell, Coordinator of the Captain Swing Riots Bicentenary Commemoration On Saturday June 22nd the English Project will be in St. Mary’s with a performance of the poem ‘Micheldever’ by J. R. Ackerley to commemorate Henry Cook, the village’s most famous Swing rioter.

Cook was convicted (among various other charges) of the attempted murder of Mr Bingham Baring and sentenced to death - an execution which took place on 16 January 1831 in the backyard of what is now the Wetherspoon’s pub in Jewry Street, Winchester.

But Cook was by no means the only rioter from Micheldever and a number of the others were to serve prison sentences for their crimes not in the Jewry Street gaol but in the Winchester House of Correction or Bridewell which was in Hyde in the cathedral city’s northern suburb.

Such was the case, for example, of 20 year old Thomas Prior Junior, who was convicted of having ‘feloniously assaulted’ Richard Twitchin in Micheldever in the riot of November 19th. He was sentenced to imprisonment in the House of Correction and there ‘kept at hard labour for eighteen months’.

These imprisonments marked a curious historic connection between the two places - Micheldever and Hyde. Most parishioners of St. Mary’s will be aware that much of the stonework for the church, as it now stands, was sourced from Hyde Abbey (the final resting place of King Alfred) when it fell into the hands of Thomas Wriothesley, King Henry VIII’s henchman, after the dissolution 10

of the monastery in the late 1530s. But by 1830 the pillaged and abandoned site of the abbey had become the very location for the Bridewell. Indeed it was when the House of Correction was being built by the prisoners themselves in 1788 that the tombs of King Alfred, his wife and son were discovered. Sad to report the prisoners simply took up the skeletal remains and ‘threw them about’– since when they have been lost for ever.

Henry Cook’s memory might also have been forgotten for ever had not J. R. Ackerley, editor of The Listener, picked up on the story and written ‘Micheldever’ more than a century after the execution. So we are delighted that the work will be performed (to our knowledge, for the first time professionally) on Saturday June 22nd in St. Mary’s as part of Captain Swing’s ‘Message To Micheldever’, a celebration of Swing-linked writing by writers and poets such as Lord Byron, John Keats, William Cobbett and John Clare We hope that parishioners of St. Mary’s and their friends might come along and be part of the show. And remember not just Henry Cook but also Thomas Prior and other men from Micheldever who became caught up in the tragic and complicated events of almost two centuries ago.

Parish Council News School Parking Parking at the school in Micheldever continues to be an issue and inconvenience for residents living on or around Church Street but, even more seriously, the regular blocking of Church Street means that emergency vehicles would not be able to reach their destinations and lives may be endangered.

It is never acceptable or fair to park on someone else’s property or blocking their access and residents have been advised to report all such incidences to the Police.

Please think carefully before trying to park on Church Street • Parking dangerously, on double yellow lines or close to a junction is an offence and enforcement action has been requested for.

• Could your child/children use the school bus?

• Could you park at the Lord Rank and use the path to the School?

Please have consideration for the residents of Church Street and think of how your child/children can best arrive and leave school without causing problems for other residents.

Isla is off to Argentina in July to volunteer in an orphanage. She held a bake sale at Easter to help fundraise for the children. No money raised is going towards paying for her trip, it 100% will be given to help the orphanage. She worked so hard and was amazed by the enthusiasm in our wonderful villages' to support her.

Jackie’s County Corner The city council elections are over and a new municipal year has begun.

At election time, all councils are in the ‘Pre - Election Period’, previously called ‘purdah’.

This lasts about five weeks before Polling Day in which no major decisions may be taken - but background work had continued at HCC. The good news is that the County Councillor Grant scheme is open for applications from the 1st June. You can go onto hants.gov.uk and search ‘county councillor grant scheme’ or use this link. www.hants.gov.uk/community/ grants/grants-list/county-councillor The website advises you to contact me about any application you’d like to make. Please do this: there may be a more appropriate grant - maybe with more funds available!

You may have seen me out in your community, talking to people at their own doorstep. This is an important part of our work, and hearing opinions and concerns not only about the Council, but Police, Health and Water services for example, is a key part of my work as your councillor and the opposition spokesperson for Children at Hampshire County Council.

So, it was shocking to hear two statistics recently. Every community needs new social homes and it is our responsibility as a society to meet those needs. A home does not need 20

to be owned to be secure. Continuing to press for home ownership as the ultimate prize- or investment - is a myth to be busted.

• 145,000 children are in temporary accommodation across the UK. This is because the only homes that are available are either too expensive or not in the right place. We can only imagine the trauma if moving to temporary accommodation means you have to leave your school, your friends and maybe puts your parents out of a job they cannot now reach.

• The second statistic was the 30,000 women per year are experiencing traumatic births. It is quoted that 60% of NHS malpractice claims are for this reason.

As the Hampshire Hospital Foundation Trust is planning its new services within the new hospital configuration, this is a huge concern. I welcome the work at national level to address this, and can only hope that it will bring about rapid improvements to a Maternity system which is so understaffed here and across the UK. The last statistic is the number of children who are not of a healthy weight.

We must find ways to allow children to be active day to day, to be able to cycle safely with parents and walk to school rather than being driven. Now meetings have restarted, I will be working with HCC to ensure their recently approved Transport Plan, LTP4, will work for all residents and

businesses in the Itchen Valley Division.

Next month, I will be tackling the continuing problem of broadband ‘notspots’.

Northbrook Hall, Spring Clean A very BIG thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who assembled on Saturday 27th April to give the Northbrook Hall a brilliant Spring Clean! Two hard working teams donated their time and labour to give both inside and outside some care and attention. Cleaning surfaces, de‑scaling kettles, cutting back overgrown

shrubs, picking up deadwood from winter storms, scraping moss from the roof, clearing gutters etc. A superb effort by our supportive community. Looking to the future, tickets are now on sale for Agatha Christie's A Murder Is Announced in July and there will be barbecue in August for anyone not going away on holiday.

Wonston Community Café The April café was run in support of Citizens Advice in Winchester, who have supported people from our Parish of Wonston. Citizens Advice told us that "Citizens Advice supported 49 people from the Parish of Wonston (which includes Sutton Scotney) with 236 issues. This represents more than 4.8 issues per person which is higher than our average of 3.8 issues per person. The top issues were benefits, housing, financial capability and advice around family/relationship issues".

Representatives from Citizens Advice attended the café, and set up a stall in the foyer, showing the types of help on offer. The ladies also spoke to several café visitors about specific issues. The cakes as usual were plentiful and delicious, with some supplied by the Citizens Advice ladies–the “tiffin with rum” being particularly popular! Although café numbers were down this month, our visitors were

very generous and a total of £330, after expenses, was donated to the charity.

The next Wonston Community Café will be at the Victoria Hall, Sutton Scotney, 9.30am–12 noon on Wednesday 19th June. This month we will be supporting Scots Tots, the Sutton Scotney Baby and Toddler group running every Friday in term time 10am-11.30am at the Victoria Hall. This is a small, local group offering, play, craft, companionship and refreshments for babies, toddlers, parents and carers.

Please do come along to support the community café, which is staffed entirely by volunteers. All the cakes are homemade, we have real coffee and plenty of free parking!

The café is cash only.

STREET ART “Our Rural Landscape” A Community Art Project in conjunction with SWR, Network Rail and supported by local businesses, schools and community organisations.

10.00am Presentation and opening

Pick up a paintbrush and create your own artwork inspired by this scene. We’ll be working all day, drop by for 10 minutes or longer if you wish. No previous experience required. Paints and materials provided.

City Councillors’ News Elections for one third of the seats on the City Council were contested in May. Stephen Godfrey was re-elected to represent the Wonston and Micheldever Ward with 1,423 votes (2023 election: 1,491).

The majority was 201 (2023: 402). There were 2,892 voters (2023: 2,865) in the Ward for this election, representing a turnout of 49.1% (2023: 48.8%) of the electorate. The LibDem group retains control of the City Council. We will focus on the same key areas as last year, with Caroline leading on scrutiny and housing policy, Patrick on planning and Stephen on finance as well as joining the Planning Committee.

The start of the new municipal year has seen the election of the next Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Russell Gordon-Smith. He represents the Alresford and Itchen Valley Ward and will be attending many events and celebrations across the Winchester District as first citizen of the District.

By the end of May, the 6 new homes and 12 new parking spaces in Southbrook Cottages, Micheldever will be completed. These new council homes will be highly energy efficient, reducing utility bills for tenants.

The South Wonston Sustainability Group will be supporting the South Wonston Village Fete on 7th July. With many residents improving the amount that is recycled, the group’s theme this year is waste reduction – to help find ways for us all to throw away less.

There continue to be many instances of fly‑tipping on public and private land. If you find any waste that has been tipped in our Ward, report it to the City Council either using the latest version of the Your Winchester app, via the website (www.winchester.gov.uk/wasterecycling/flytipping) or to one of us.

Planting With Colour Keeping It Cool Combining different colours creates particular moods and feelings. The association of blue with the cold is so inbred in our perceptions, thanks to short winter days and the low angle of the sun which can also bring out the red orange light at that end of the spectrum.

So, limiting your flower and foliage colour palette to tints of blue, lavender, white and chrome yellow will recreate this cool look and & feel; even in summer. Green, featuring blue in its spectral range, also has a freshening effect on colour schemes.

Cool hues also engender a sense of calmness and peace. A garden planted in this way will help you relax and escape the heat of the day. And these colours seem to work best in the parts of the garden that are in shade for at least part of the day, where the fresh tints and tones can be seen at their best.

• Pale tints of blue (those created by the addition of white) tend to create the coolest, • freshest effects. Mix in darker shades to make them appear cooler.

• Be careful with yellows. Green - yellow will sit well in a cool planting scheme, but orange - yellow will immediately turn up the temperature!

• You can consider half of the colour wheel to be cool, ranging from blue, through green to yellow.
