QUEEN’S GREEN CANOPY “The trees and shrubs before you have been planted to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II’s accession to the throne.

The species chosen are native to Britain and are indigenous to the region.”

Our walk mainly follows gravelled rides up through the woods to the Commemorative Planting carried out 30 years ago. Easy walking with only slight gradients. It is suitable for children’s buggies but wheelchairs would be a bit of an effort.

Let’s Say Grace The media news cycle is dominated by the theme of war in Europe and its impact both on this continent and the entire globe of which two of the major consequences are the reductions in supply of energy and food.

It is no exaggeration to say that here in the Dever Valley we have enjoyed the privilege of living through a long period of increasing affluence in one of the wealthiest areas of one of the richest countries of the world. It is all too easy to forget that my “normal” of abundant cheap food available 24 hours a day is not a universal experience and is certainly not mine by right.

Christians believe that it is God who gives us the means and ability to produce and enjoy wealth and it is He who causes crops to grow so that bread may come forth from the earth. What then should be my response as war causes the long-term downward trend in food prices to go into reverse?

Surely as we become aware of the fragility of our food supply we should become more and not less grateful to the God of the Bible who out of His mercy supplies us with all things.

“Let’s say Grace”, we used to say at school before the start of each meal; perhaps it is a habit and attitude of mind we need as adults to relearn? Gratitude is an attractive quality and the best antidote to the sentiment Joni Mitchell expressed so well in her song, ‘Big Yellow Taxi’: “You don’t know what you got till it’s gone”.

News from Woodmancote & Popham Woodmancote was not lucky with the weather for this year’s Rogation Walk! After the most glorious sunny Saturday, the Sunday for the Rogation Walk was very showery.

I was certain it was going to be a wash out, but I need not have worried. Quite a few (considering the weather) brave parishioners turned out to walk though the beautiful countryside around Woodmancote and Popham, to bless the crops and fields along with some lovely readings. (Given the rain we skipped the hymns until the end).

We were led round by Linda Albin and leading the prayers–Rev’d Rob Rees. After a very dry April and first half of May, rain was probably just what all farmers had been praying for, so maybe it was a blessing really.

Rogation tea held at Mary Wallis’s house was delicious as usual and we would like to say a massive thank you to all those who always contribute so generously to the refreshments, especially Mary and Nick for hosting.

I think June is shaping up to be a very exciting month with all the various village things planned for the Jubilee. It looks to be a wonderful occasion and one we will all remember for a very long time.

Saturday 11th June is also Woodmancote’s main fundraising event with the drinks party and Auction of Promises, to be held in Penny and Colin Dixon’s garden, The Old Post House, Woodmancote, 6pm–8pm.

Please contact Linda Albin for tickets to what I’m sure will be a lovely evening with some exciting things to be auctioned.

Finally, we have a Pet Service Sunday 19th June at 3pm led by Rev’d Rob Rees.

Organ Recital at St Mary the Virgin We were privileged to attend an organ recital, organised by Joyce and John Croft, at St. Mary’s church on Friday morning 8th April. The recital was given by Anna, one of the carers who looks after Joyce Croft at Colten Care. Anna regarded it as her farewell concert to her friends at the home. Six of whom came to listen to a very varied repertoire from Jesu Joy of Man’s desiring to Amazing Grace. Anna said that she was enjoying herself so much that she would like to play all day. She is quite prepared to give a recital for the village should we so wish. It was a joyous

Café Church @ St Mary’s Micheldever Café Church has returned to St Mary’s on the third Sunday of the month. This brilliantly informal service offers everyone in our community: a time of fellowship and friendship; a time to catch-up and connect; and, a time to meet new people.

Come along at 10am for pastries and good coffee followed by a short act of worship at 10.45am. Bring your children. Bring your neighbours. Bring your friends.

Everyone one is welcome at St Mary’s without hesitation or exception. Come just as you are.

Wonston Community Café From sales of cake and coffee, our April café raised an amazing £380 for Winchester Talking Newspapers. Over 60 visitors enjoyed the delicious cakes, most of which were provided by supporters of WTN. The next Community Café will be at the Victoria Hall, Sutton Scotney, 9.30am–12 noon on Wednesday 15th June when we will be raising funds for The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution.

RABI are a national charity that provides local support to the farming community across England and Wales. Established in 1860, they have been offering guidance, financial support and practical care to farming people of all ages for generations.

We are a cash only café, last orders 11.45am, lots of free parking.

Donations to our monthly nominated charity are always welcome.

Rev’d Bob Clarkson (1932-2022) In 1979 when the Clarkson’s 18 year old son Simon died tragically in a road accident, Bob’s incredible faith enabled him to support his family. A man grieving so desperately at losing his eldest child always seemed to have the answer (or at least tried to find one). A man who had the strength to call one of Simon’s best friends with the sad news, but also tell him how to pick himself up, and look to the future. Bob had always had strong feelings for being ordained and it was when he went to identify Simon’s body that he had the calling. It was so powerful and strong when he described it, and confirmed his faith completely.

In later life, one of Bob great loves was travel; he loved to tell the story of the several holidays he took with wife Angela and their dear friends Daphne and Pat, where he was known as ‘That man with three wives’.

These two anecdotes illustrate just two sides of a man whose breadth of knowledge, experience, compassion, wisdom and humour can barely be covered in this short(ish) tribute. He lived in South Wonston for over 50 years, and was a familiar sight and friend to many in the Dever valley villages. He was born Robert Christopher Clarkson in Middleham, North Yorkshire in 1932, and remained a true Yorkshire man to the end of his life, despite leaving in his teens. He was a server at Newcastle Cathedral for many years, going on to study at Durham University and graduating to become a teacher of Religious Studies and Geography. During National Service in Oxford, indulging in another of his interests, calling at a country dance, his eyes met those of the pretty pianist Angela 10

across the floor. They married in 1958 and settled into married life in Newcastle where they began their family. After a stint in Loughborough, where Bob and Angela ran the boarding house at a Grammar school, the family moved to South Wonston in 1969.

By now a lay Reader, Bob taught at Peter Symonds college, ran the Combined Cadet Force and later became College Chaplain, admired for his strength and for the support he gave to many students and their families at some very difficult times. Back in the seventies, it was Bob who suggested that Peter Symonds should have a Carol service at Winchester Cathedral some time in December. That Carol service continues to this day.

In South Wonston Bob and Angela were instrumental in raising money for the new village hall in Downs Road, and then later for the new St Margaret’s Church to The Dever - June 2022

be built. Their children had fundraising etched on their hearts. Whether it was a concert, a market stall, sponsored sing, Buy-a-Brick scheme or a fete held on the soon-to-be-opened A34 by-pass, as soon as one fundraiser finished, another began. They set up a Sunday School and a church choir, and were at the heart of the Friends of St Margaret’s, organising social and fundraising events for the new church. Bob was a member of the village Senior (Wednesday) Club, remaining President to the end.

Bob worked tirelessly as a non-stipendiary priest in the churches of the Dever Valley.

His historical, geographical and religious knowledge meant that congregations always came away having learnt something from his sermons. He was a very good listener with whom you could discuss problems which were proving difficult. He had a marvellous way of encouraging you to talk to him of your problem, but never pushed a particular solution. At times of bereavement he was a rock on which to steady your way. When his failing eyesight forced him to step back from leading services he was always available to help and encourage the new lay leaders at St Margaret’s. He came to their services, giving the absolution and blessing and sometimes the address, much to the appreciation of the leader whose workload was reduced on those occasions.

He had been holding evening Bible study classes and had another course planned for this Easter. He was so pleased that people were coming and was concerned they wouldn’t fit into his lounge! Even with his deteriorating health issues, he was still spreading the Gospel to the end.

The last 10 years of Bob and Angela’s married life were hard. When Angela’s dementia finally got the better of her Bob realised that he could no longer look after them both, and his beloved Angela went into care. Again, his strength was incredible, supporting his family through the sadness. He bore the pain of them being separated with great dignity.

His own health suffered over the last year.

His breathing was at times impossible, his eyesight all but gone, and yet he never really complained. He was still ready for a chat and a giggle, his dry sense of humour undimmed. His love for his family, children and grandchildren, and for his fellow man remained strong, as did his interests in travel, his stamp collection and James Bond films. His was a life well lived, for God and for others, rather than for himself. He quite simply made the world a better place, and we pray that he will find peace and rest after such a busy, committed, caring life.

Parish Council News Parish Council Election Following the election on 5th May we welcome three new councillors to the Parish Council. A short procedural meeting is held following the election and Aaron, Paul and Suzanne will then attend their first monthly meeting on 1st June at Northbrook Hall in Micheldever.

Parish Council meetings are held in public and all residents are very welcome to attend and observe. The meeting is paused for around 15 minutes at 8.00pm to allow the public to raise any issues with the councillors or ask questions.

An updated contact sheet giving the details of the councillors and the specific roles on the Council for which they have responsibility will be circulated with the newsletter in The Dever for July and Micheldever Parish Website.

The July edition of The Dever is paid for by the Parish Council and sent to all residents in the Parish.

Noticeboards The Parish Council have noticeboards sited around the Parish which are primarily for the purpose of displaying notices to satisfy our legal obligations.

These boards are the private property of the Council. The agenda is displayed for meetings along with election notices and financial statements of the Council.

When space allows, and legal notices are not obscured, permission may be granted for community events to be advertised on the boards. It would be courteous if event organisers could consult the Clerk to seek permission to post notices.

Advertisements for commercial businesses and private notices are not permitted and will be removed.

From Our MP Steve Brine First up this month and it was another special day, held in warm Spring sunshine, at Micheldever Station as one of my youngest constituents unveiled the new information board on the old platform outside the Ticket Office at our railway station.

I am working with Diabetes UK after the launch of a new report as part of the charity’s Diabetes Is Serious campaign.

There are 4.9 million people living with diabetes in the UK and we’re pushing a number of recommendations for improving care including a routine care recovery plan.

A recent survey of over 10,000 people with

diabetes found that 1 in 3 respondents had no contact with their diabetes healthcare team in the last year. Without these vital checks and routine care, people living with diabetes face increased risk of developing serious complications. Jackie’s County Corner Ukrainian families: So much is available for families coming to the UK- but it’s often still a struggle for individuals to get the specific help they need. HCC has set up a direct query line specifically for councillors to answer these questions.

So far, it is proving effective. If you are hosting a family, please contact me and I can seek a quick answer.

Household Support Fund: the fund for food, heating and fuel is now extended to all ages. Please contact your school, Citizens Advice for access to this fund.

You may also like to check if you are entitled to benefits. Go to the www.gov.uk website and search for ‘benefits calculator’ or search on my website for links.

Warm Homes scheme: If you live in private housing, and have an income of less than £30,000, you may be entitled to funds from the Warm Homes scheme to improve the insulation in your home. Please see my website for details- search ‘Warm Homes scheme’ Grants for projects: The County Councillor grant scheme is now open.

I have a limited fund to distribute so you are strongly advised to talk to me first about your idea. Funding can be from £100 to £1000.

Walk to school week: I hope your family took part in Walk to School week in May. If a small change to the route could have made your journey easier, please let me know. The Bishop’s Sutton to Alresford path assessment has been made but the costs are astronomic.

The A33 paths are overgrown too. Is your route used by many others? If it is well used, the path may be kept clear by feet walking along it, but report any difficulties on your route, and let me know of any ideas for

future park & stride locations.

Glass recycling: Post lockdown, many of the public glass bins are reporting as full quicker than expected, even though most households have access to a Winchester Council doorstep collection. The County Council has withdrawn glass recycling at the HWRC’s, adding to this problem. A local pub owner describes public delivering wine bottles to his onsite container as the ‘walk of shame’! Cyber Bobby Hampshire Constabulary wanted to share an update with you from our partners, The Blue Lamp Trust, of which our Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney is a Trustee.

While you may already be aware of, or indeed used, their Bobby Scheme service – which provides free home security visits, long-life smoke alarms and advice to vulnerable residents in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, particularly the elderly and victims of burglary and domestic abuse – they have launched; Cyber Bobby.

This is a brand-new scheme from the Blue Lamp Trust – which is seek to help protect people from becoming victims of cyber-crime.

The scheme, much-like the Bobby Scheme, provides home visits, giving advice and guidance about basic IT security.

Our police vetted advisors offer FREE home visit to residents of Hampshire who are: · Over 65 years old · Disabled (over 18) · Previous victim of cyber crime 22

Citizens Advice Winchester District I recently applied for a job at a local pub which offered National Minimum Wage. I had an interview and at the end the manager asked how old I was. After telling her I was 25 she told me she would be in touch, but it would be unlikely I’d get the job because they wouldn’t be able to afford to pay me the required wage. She said she’d prefer to hire someone younger. Is this legal?

Nobody should be asking you how old you are in a job interview. Being 25, you’re entitled to the National Living Wage. On the Citizens Advice website there are full details of the wages people are entitled to by law. But these rules shouldn’t mean employers avoid hiring people because of how old they are. That’s known as ‘direct age discrimination’ in the Equality Act 2010.

You’re also protected by the National Minimum Wage Act 1998, which says employers can’t not hire you (and they can’t fire you) because your age means you’re entitled to a higher rate. We have a lot of information on our website about what to do if you’re being treated unfairly when applying for a job. If you’ve been discriminated against, there are steps you can take to either get compensation or convince the person to give you a job.

Make a note of what happened as soon as you can–noting down exactly what you were asked and any other remarks the interviewer made. This will be useful as evidence later.

Next, you should write a letter of complaint to the employer. Keep a copy of this letter for your own records. There’s advice on the Citizens Advice website on what this letter should include and you can also speak to an adviser at your local Citizens Advice to

get help writing it.

If the letter doesn’t get an outcome you’re happy with, you could take the employer to an employment tribunal. You’ll need as much evidence of discrimination as possible. Evidence should include the job advert, the job description, your notes about what was said at the interview and any contact you’ve had with the employer since–like your complaint letter.

Remember that you only have three months minus one day from the date that the ‘discriminatory act’ (in this case, the comments in your interview) happened to start tribunal proceedings.

You do this by contacting the government organisation ACAS and telling them that you intend to bring a claim.

Nobody should have to worry about being discriminated against when job hunting.

City Councillors’ News The City Council responded positively to requests from us and the Parish Councils to extend the period available for consultation with residents on the emerging proposals for allocating land for over 900 new homes in our Ward, including 50-60 new homes in South Wonston and in Sutton Scotney. There have been several public meetings and calls for comments from residents that has involved over 100 submissions. Parish Councils are due to have submitted responses to the City Council by the time that this newsletter is distributed. The City Council is due to put its formal proposals out for public consultation later this summer.

Councillors from South Wonston and Wonston Parish councils are working together with a group of residents to promote action for more recycling and other measures to address the Climate Emergency. Working with the support of

the City Council and the WeCan campaign in parallel with the Greening Micheldever campaign, we hope that this activity will engage you in taking practical measures to improve our area. Let us know if we can help with any action that you want to share.

Some improvements are being seen with the planning enforcement service in Winchester. Regular reports are now being provided to City Councillors and Parish Councils, showing open and recently closed cases. We believe that this is beginning to lead to better management of these open cases, some of which have been open for far too long.

Elections for one third of the seats on the City Council were contested in May. Patrick Cunningham (1,437 votes, majority 467, turnout 47%) was reelected to represent the Wonston and Micheldever Ward. The LibDem group retains control of the City Council.

Your Organic Garden In June Early summer in the organic garden is full of colourful new growth. This makes a busy - but lovely - month in the garden.

Remember the two organic principles: good soil management, and diverse planting to encourage plenty of beneficial wildlife. And keep on top of the weeds.

Soil matters Add a mulch on any bare, moist soil, using compost. Organic mulches keep soil moist, and deter weed growth (remove weeds before mulching). Mulches provide a safe habitat for all sorts of beneficial creatures, such as centipedes and beetles that devour slugs and other pests. And the compost provides a constant source of nutrients.

Keep adding to your compost bin, making sure to mix ‘greens’ (lawn cuttings etc), with ‘browns’ (cardboard, straw and scrumpled up paper). Turn the heap to aerate it, add water if it feels dry and dusty.

Vegetables If your first sowings and plantings have failed or are unhealthy there is still time to sow some more. Soil will have warmed up and direct sowings should be more successful.

Hoe off weeds before they flower/set seed. Seedlings can be left to shrivel and die on the soil surface. Put larger ones in the compost heap (without seed heads.)

Harvest comfrey leaves to make your own liquid feed for tomatoes and other container grown plants.

Fill any empty gaps still awaiting vegetables with a fast-growing cover crop of green manures. Buckwheat, mustard, phacelia or trefoil can all still be sown if the ground is moist enough.

Squish heavy infestations of aphids on fresh plant shoots with your fingers (wear 26

rubber gloves if squeamish). Avoid sprays as birds, wasps and other beneficial creatures are feeding their young. Unless a wasp nest is in a really inconvenient and potentially dangerous location, it need not be destroyed.

Fruit Apply a seaweed-extract foliar spray which contains natural growth stimulants and a variety of trace elements. Besides improving the quality of your fruit, the plants become stronger and healthier so are less susceptible to pest and disease attack.

Water newly planted fruit trees/bushes, and keep a weed-free area around their bases to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

Most top fruit and soft fruit will benefit from some pruning and fruit thinning.

Herbs There is still time to sow and grow your own organic herbs, such as borage, chives, fennel, summer and winter savory.

Herbs are superb attractant plants when in flower. They bring bees and a huge range of beneficial insects into the garden Mint rust (orange blobs on leaves and stems) can continue from year to year.

Remove and destroy plants and start again with new stock. Chive rust is less serious and temporary. Cut plants back to stumps; fresh clean growth will re-grow rapidly.

Flowers Mulch bare soil, making sure it is moist first. Mulches retain water and suppress weeds. Use a thick layer of last autumn’s leaves, several layers of newspaper covered with grass clippings or even composted wood chippings.

Dig out bindweed on sight. This nuisance weed hates disturbance, and will eventually give up as long as you can dig it out as soon as it sprouts.

Its roots, and others from pernicious weeds such as dandelions, docks and ground elder, can be put in a bucket of water (or black plastic sack) and ‘drowned’ for at least 3 months. Then put the nutritious sludgy mess on the compost heap.

Top dress all plants growing in containers.

Scrape off the top 4cm/2” of compost, and replace with a 50/50 mixture of fresh (peatfree and organic if possible) potting compost and your home-produced garden compost.

Use a liquid feed for hanging baskets.

Leaf spots, rusts and rose blackspot are rarely killer diseases; they just disfigure. Remove affected leaves, flowers and berries and put in the green waste bin for professional composting.

Avoid sprays, even organic ones, as they also target the predators such as hoverflies, ladybirds and parasitic wasps.

Squash large aphid colonies with your fingers – wear gloves if squeamish.

Greenhouse June is a good month to use biological pest controls. Brown marks on plants’ leaves in the greenhouse are often caused by sun scorch. Take care to water plants from below, and install shading of some sort.

Lawns and hedges Frog and hedgehog alert! Before cutting into any damp overgrown grass, go round with a stick and see what can be chased out of these sheltered spots.

To use the nutrient rich worm casts on your lawn, either wash them into the

grass using a watering can, or wait until they dry out completely, and just brush into the grass. Only mow where needed.

Allow other areas to grow and let attractive grasses flower - providing insect homes and habitat for egg-laying butterflies. Long grass can be cut back at the end of the season, and added to the compost bin.

In areas where grass is sparse and difficult to grow, dig it well in and plant a ground-covering plant instead such as ajuga (Ajuga reptans, common name ‘Bugle”) in shady areas under trees.

Trim back hedges, but take care not to disturb birds and fledgling chicks.

Feed hedges after cutting. A mulch of grass mowings at the base of the hedge provides some valuable nitrogen.

Ponds Provide sheltering plants close to the pond so that water-lovers can climb in and out without exposure.

The pond itself needs two-thirds of its surface covered by plants of some sort to keep algae at bay.

Houseplants Continue to water and feed plants regularly. Leafy plants require a feed rich in nitrogen (N), while flowering plants need potash (K).

Sooty mould grows on honeydew excreted by aphids. The mould itself is relatively harmless unless photosynthesis is severely disrupted. Wash the leaves and deal with the pests.

Hoover up whitefly and sciarid fly on indoor plants. Set the hoover on gentle, shake the plant then suck the pests up as they fly.
