St Mary’s Plant & Cake Sale 2021 Preparation for the St Mary’s Plant & Cake Sale on 27th May called for some nifty foot-work from gardeners who had been busy earlier in the Spring sowing seeds, pricking out and potting on. May was one of the coldest and driest months for many years. Hoses were unfurled to stop young plants from dying after weeks without rain. Clear, star-studded nights brought biting frosts and the need for cover.

Tender plants came out from under glass but were hurriedly returned. One lapse of judgment and a trayful of seedlings could be lost. But, come the day of the sale, we were blessed with perfect weather and warm sunshine. How heartening it was to see visitors wandering amongst

the plant and cake stalls under beautiful blue skies enjoying the first village event of the year and the opportunity to mix with friends and neighbours. Many people kindly contributed plants to help make the event such a success but special thanks must go to Caroline Knight.

The cake bakers of the community had also been busy behind the scenes mixing and whisking, and there was a fantastic selection of cakes and biscuits. It was the happiest and jolliest of mornings and the magnificent sum of £1,220 was raised for St Mary’s. Thank you to all those who kindly supported the event.

News from Woodmancote & Popham Woodmancote was very lucky to have the Rev. Neil Britton for our Service of Holy Communion in June and we would like to express our thanks to him and Jacqueline his wife for visiting our little Church.

Also in June, but after the Dever went to press, we were due to have a fabulous fund-raising drinks party in the beautiful garden of Penny and Colin Dixon. A report will follow in the next Dever magazine. I am always touched by the way so many people really put themselves out to support St. James’ and without the support of passionate parishioners determined to keep the Church going, St. James’ might be in a very different position.

On 18th July Woodmancote celebrates its patron Saint James with the Patronal Service at 6pm. Please do come and join us for this special summer gathering.

There will be wine and nibbles afterwards.

Jane The wonderful monthly walks organised

by Sue Bell follow many different routes around the locality, but the one on 6th June had religious significance too as it

took in a visit to the historic Godsfield Chapel near Alresford.

We learnt that the chapel had been built on land gifted by a long ago Bishop of Winchester, Henri de Blois (who happened to be William the Conqueror’s grandson), to the Knights Hospitaller.

They were like the Knights Templar but in charge of sheltering and looking after the sick and had been founded by the Pope in 1113 in the Holy Land.

The chapel has been on that site since the 14th century, replacing an earlier one. The Order of Hospitallers provided hospitality to travellers and pilgrims, and this would have included those going from Winchester to Canterbury. Latterly the chapel has had various other uses and in the 20th century it even had a period as a youth hostel before English Heritage stepped in about 20 years and carried out works to arrest its deterioration. It is set in the most beautiful gardens and well worth a visit by arrangement with the owners.

Church Fete 2021.

The Prime Minister’s extension of the lockdown restrictions through to 19 July has been a huge disappointment for many, including the church fete organisers. After many months of planning and preparation by the hard working committee, the first event post-lockdown was eagerly anticipated. However, the restrictions, if they are to be followed as intended–a position that the Parish Church Committee would wish to respect–deem it is no longer appropriate to hold the fete as planned on Saturday 17 July.

This is a huge disappointment on two counts. First, the fete is a great day for the community to come together and have fun and, secondly, raise much needed funds for the church. St Mary’s Church is a beautiful and architecturally interesting building. But it is large, old and in need of constant tender love and care. That requires money. The

majority of that money comes from grants–if applications are successful– and the community. So, the loss of the fete for the second year running is a significant loss to the church finances.

It is hoped that the efforts of the committee might be re-programmed differently over the coming months and some fund-raising achieved.

Additionally donations are always more than welcome. Some in the community consider a regular donation is beneficial in helping the church meet its needs. Such donations, if gift aided, can add a further 20% from the government to the sum donated. Please consider a donation, either as a one off “fete alternative” through the collection box in the church or on a regular basis by contacting either of the church wardens–Juliet Pattison (01962 774399) or Jan Mason (01962 774362).

Public Health Consultation Hampshire County Council have opened a consultation to seek the views of those who use the County Council’s services and other interested stakeholders on a number of proposed changes to specific services.

This consultation outlines proposals that could enable Hampshire County Council’s Public Health Service to refocus its ring-fenced budget to fund a broader range of Public Health support across the County Council by delivering savings in the following four areas: • Substance misuse treatment; • Stop smoking (known as Smokefree Hampshire); • Sexual health; • 0-19 Public Health Nursing,

which includes health visiting and school nursing.

It also seeks to understand the potential impacts of the proposed options and invites other suggestions on how savings could be made, to help inform its final approach.

Micheldever Community Enterprise Society As we emerge from a year that has proved to be unprecedented, it is appropriate for Micheldever Community Enterprise Society (MCES) to reflect on the plans laid out in 2019 vis à vis today for a community hub consisting of a pub and shop.

After an amazing input from the community, particularly our two benefactors who generously purchased it in the first place, the pub was opened in December 2019 by Paula and Andy.

Their first three months indicated that the village was going to have a great pub. Then Covid struck. The impact on the hospitality sector of the measures put in place to contain Covid–whether established or start-up businesses–does not need elaborating. Many have failed as the challenges have been too great. We should be impressed that the Half Moon and Spread Eagle has survived despite being a start-up without the financial strength of a long standing enterprise. It should be noted that the excellent support of the community has been a contributory factor.

As the pub emerges from the punitive restrictions, that support continues to be needed to help Paula and Andy deliver what they have shown they can when able to operate properly as a pub.

Emerging from all those restrictions is not a sudden switch from “off” to “on” and everything being wonderful in the hospitality sector. For well established businesses the challenges are lessened by the strength of strong financial reserves.

For start-ups such buffers are not available.

Consequently, staff are difficult to find in a hugely competitive market place for those necessary skills. It is just such a challenge that Paula and Andy currently face. To complicate matters further, Paula has been 8

seriously unwell and unable to play a full part in the pub’s recovery, having to focus on her own recovery. However, the corner is there to be turned and the team of Charlie, Meghan, Chris and Andy are valiantly striving to get there. A little understanding of their challenge and continued support will undoubtedly help them on that journey.

The shop was Part 2 of the overall plan, to be addressed once the pub was up and running effectively. Then two factors came into play–Covid and an awareness that to put a shop on the same site as the pub would be detrimental to the ambience of the pub.

MCES set about looking for an appropriate site elsewhere in the village, conscious that whatever solution was pursued a considerable amount of money would have to be raised to bring it to fruition. During these deliberations, the shop premises in the village centre were sold. This indicated that the efforts of MCES might be unwarranted and efforts were put on hold until the nature of the sale became clear.

The purchase, which is hoped to be completed imminently, is by a retailer who runs a shop in Winchester and is seeking to expand his business. His intentions are to provide a village store, meeting the needs of the community with appropriate provisioning. As soon as the purchase is complete, he hopes to have the shop open within some four weeks. On the premise that the purchase is complete before then, he intends to have an article in the August Dever magazine laying out his hopes and aspirations for a village store that the community want. MCES consider this very good news and hope that all proceeds successfully. Fingers crossed that the August Dever will be announcing the date for the opening of the store.

The Micheldever Parish Map Boards The Micheldever Parish Rights of Way Volunteers (RoWVers) are pleased to report that all five Map Boards have now been installed around the Parish. The Boards were made possible with funding support from Hampshire County Council’s Rural Access grant and with generous top up support from Micheldever Parish Council. The Board locations were agreed by the RoWVers at two annual meetings, and the Map Board content was drafted, proofed, and finalised with many hours of careful work from a core team of writers: Diana Aldam, Jo Cooper, Pat Craze, Patricia Goldsmith and Jacquie Radford.

The Map Boards were designed with the team of writers and Steve Cooksey from the Hampshire Print Service, who also supplied the Maps and Key. The Boards were installed in sunshine and showers over April and May, with volunteers James Alpe, Jo Cooper, Jacquie Radford, Gary Shepherd and Lynsey Sweeney.

Many thanks to the whole team who made these Boards possible – we’ve had some great feedback so far. Each Board has a QR code to enable the Map Board content to sit on your smartphone, and all Boards are shared on the new Micheldever Villages website. Check them out!

View from the Vicarage High Summer July brings with it this year a flurry of major sporting events. In addition to Wimbledon and Test matches we have European football and of course the postponed Olympics, scheduled to begin later this month in Japan.

Something for everybody to enjoy as we all eagerly await the lifting of covid restrictions.

Sport has proved to be a strange form of reconciliation over the past few years.

Nations that have been pitted against each other in war or at least frozen out by past encounters, find themselves lining up against each other on the football field or cricket pitch. The enthusiasm and partisanship engendered by sport so often transcends political and religious divides.

The athlete competing in the games is an example of running the Christian life that is used in the Bible. The apostle Paul writing to young Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:4 states that anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules.

Paul depicts the Christian life not as a leisure or spectator activity but as fierce competition.

Rigorous training is necessary if the victor’s crown is the goal. A

casual approach to the Christian life is not acceptable any more than the training required for a 10,000 metres final in the Olympics.

The dictat that the winner must obey the rules speaks volumes to sport today. Major sports are overloaded with VAR and minor rules that continually delay the game so that minor transgressions can be sought on video.

Despite this over dependence on the rules we still enjoy the sport and some wonderful athletes have emerged in all major sports. Even the important issues of diversity and equality are being resolved in the sporting arenas around the world. Well ahead of diversity and equality in law, medicine, and the church.

I do hope you will be able to indulge yourself this month and enjoy some exciting sporting moments in your favourite sport.

This month the Lower Dever benefice says farewell to Rev Mark Bailey who departs for Hertfordshire. We wish him well and look forward to South Wonston joining us in an enlarged benefice.

We welcome Rev Rob Rees as curate to our benefice. Rob has just completed his training and will be ordained in Winchester cathedral on July 4th.

Micheldever School News for July Summer is always a wonderful time in the life of a school. At Micheldever C of E Primary School, we have been enjoying the sunnier days and being able to be out and about a little more. Our Year 6 children have thoroughly enjoyed their residential at Calshot. They were able to take part in a range of activities including skiing, archery, kayaking and orienteering.

What was wonderful to see was the team spirit that they built up over the course of the week and how they came together as a cohort. We have really enjoyed having them as a year group at Micheldever and wish them all the best as they leave us and move to their various secondary schools.

We have also enjoyed a whole school trip to Marwell Zoo. For many of our children, it was the first ‘big’ trip outside of school since the beginning of the pandemic. It was fantastic to see the children out of school, enjoying the large variety of animals at the zoo and they were outstanding representatives of our community. Well done children.

As we reach the end of the academic year, it is often a chance for us to reflect on what we have accomplished over the course of the year. It has been a challenging year for many in our school community as we have battled against the pandemic in our own way. However, the children at the school have once again excelled and it has been a privilege to lead a school where children are so eager to learn, so eager to make a difference and show such excellent behaviour. For me personally, I am delighted to have been appointed as the Headteacher at Micheldever C of E Primary School

after a period of time as Head of School and then acting Headteacher. I am excited about the next steps that our school will be taking and look forward to working closely with many of you.

I wrote recently to advise you about an event that we have coming up to put into your diaries. I am pleased to share that on Tuesday 20th July at 2:00 – 3:00pm, we would like to invite all those in our local community to come and visit our school for our Community Open Afternoon – you may have never been to the school before, may not have been for a long time or may be a regular – all are welcome.

There will be an opportunity to see some of the amazing work that our children have done over the course of the past year and to celebrate the learning that they have done. Refreshments will be available. The event is dependent on the continued easing of COVID restrictions so please visit our website to see updates before the event or to ensure you are aware of any restrictions. We would love to welcome many of you into our school.

Parish Council News When speaking with the police regarding crimes in our area Micheldever Parish Council have often been told that these crimes have not been reported. So MPC would like to keep a record for future reference.

If you report a crime on the 101 online reporting page then please email the incident number to the clerk.

If you do not have access to the internet, phone 101 and then please phone the clerk with the incident number.

If you are unable to get through on the 101 phone line, please phone the clerk and she will report the crime for you.

The following is a view from a parishioner who has used the online crime reporting page; ‘On the subject of contacting the police

via 101, I have been using the Hampshire Police 101 online reporting page with great success. The reports can be made out in as little as 10 minutes, often much quicker than waiting on the phone, and they go directly to the control room. I always report it as anti-social behaviour and the police send a received receipt with a unique number, they also amend the report if it is deemed to be a different offence. The report can be made as “taking place now” or retrospectively. Bus Back Better 3. Affordable bus fares. The fares throughout the district are too high, and this is especially difficult for families and people on low income. Cost should not prevent people from using the bus.

4. Pollution-free buses. Buses must be greener. We would like to see electric buses wherever possible.

The government has asked Hampshire County Council to produce a Bus Service Improvement Plan to help more people to use the buses. We want HCC to include: 1. More road space for buses. Reserve streets to help bus routes avoid traffic jams and interconnect across central Winchester, so it is easy for everyone to get to the railway station and new leisure centre without using a car.

2. Better bus services. Better routes, to more villages, and more frequent, reliable and quicker timetables to get people out of their cars. It needs to be easy to get to critical destinations such as places of work, hospitals, surgeries, schools, supermarkets and train stations, wherever you live.

5. Better bus connections. Bring in better bus stops and decent connections between buses, and with trains. Make it easy and pleasant to catch the bus by improving the main bus stops – lighting, shelters, live information, cycle parking, and good access footpaths. Change timetables and routes so people can change easily between buses and onto trains on any journey around the whole District, and to neighbouring areas.

We can all make choices to live lower carbon lifestyles, like using our cars less, but sometimes we are limited by the reality of the systems we operate in.

Hampshire County Council could help set up better bus systems to make low carbon travel a real option for more of us.

Citizens Advice Winchester District I’ve been saving up to have my kitchen redone, but I’m a bit worried about it. Last time I had any work done on the house, it took more than double the time and ended up costing me a fortune. I’m looking for a different builder this time, but how will I know I can trust them?

Many of us are desperate to make improvements to our homes after so much time spent in them during the pandemic, but it’s important to choose a trader wisely. Here are some steps you should take when choosing a trader: Find a Trading Standards ‘approved trader’ - use the internet to search for one in your area or the Government’s approved trader scheme TrustMark.

Get references or recommendations - ask people you know or ask the person you hire for examples of work they’ve carried out in the past. Try to avoid contractors who won’t give references - it’s a sign they could be dishonest.

Find out if they are a current member of a trade body - trade bodies have codes of practice and can help resolve problems if things go wrong, so check your trader is a member. Ask who they’re registered with and then check the trade body’s website.

Only use certified traders for gas and electrics - it’s dangerous to use someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing.

Check the Gas Safe Register for a list of traders and use a registered electrician who can certify their own work. When you’re having a kitchen fitted, it’s worth checking whether the person you’ve hired will be doing the electrical or gas work themselves. If not, check who they will be using and whether they’re registered.

an estimate.

The Questor The Wild Gospel..… ….. In the Wicked City Shortly after making his speech to the Areopagus in Athens, Paul moved on to Corinth which is about 50 miles to the west of Athens. The city had been founded by Julius Caesar in 44BC and had become a very prosperous place. The key to its prosperity was its location on the narrow stretch of land known as the Isthmus of Corinth.

In those days, people who wished to travel between the Adriatic and the Aegean Seas had two options. One was to sail around the southern tip of Greece and risk the violent storms which were common in that area. The other was to travel overland through the Isthmus of Corinth. That meant either offloading the ships and carrying the goods by cart or pack animal – or, in some cases, towing the whole boat across the Isthmus.

Pretty well everyone who chose the overland route would have to stop off at Corinth making it a very cosmopolitan place. You can imagine what a bustling place it was with people from all over the known world travelling through; some of them staying and bringing their own local customs and religions with them. The principal groups of people were Greeks, Romans – it was a Roman colony – and Jews. Emperor Claudius (41 – 54AD) had recently expelled all Jews from Rome and Corinth was geographically easy for them to get to.

there also made it attractive to them.

So when Paul went to Corinth around 50AD he found a lot of refugees and plenty of work for a tent maker like himself. He soon met a Jew called Aquila and his wife Priscilla who had recently been expelled as a result of Claudius’ edict. They were also tent makers so Paul joined forces with them and went to live with them.

He found himself in a very diverse and challenging environment with all the temptations you would associate with a city full of sailors and traders and the people who exploit them – in fact the people of Corinth had a reputation as an unruly, hard drinking, sexually promiscuous bunch. He was still in Greece – or Achaia as it was known at that time – so there was a healthy appetite for philosophical debate.

There was also the worship of the full range of Greek and Roman gods which took its place alongside the worship of the imperial family – and money.

Paul followed his usual practice of going to the synagogue on the Sabbath and tried to persuade the Jews that Jesus was the The Dever–July 2021

Messiah. Then, when Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia (remember, they’d stayed behind in Berea to help establish a church there), he devoted himself completely to preaching. Some of the Jews like Aquila and Priscilla believed but mostly they were abusive and obstructed him. So, as he had done so many times before, he took the Message of Jesus to the non Jews.

One night, Jesus spoke to Paul in a vision. He told him not to be afraid and to go on preaching “…for I am with you and no-one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.”

Paul would recall these words when, as was entirely predictable, the Jews brought him before Gallio, the pro consul of Achaia, claiming that he was persuading people to worship in ways contrary to the law. Gallio didn’t give Paul the chance to speak; he dismissed the case as a matter of religion and nothing to do with him.

Paul stayed in Corinth for around 18 months then he sailed with Aquila and Priscilla to Ephesus in modern day Turkey.

He spent a short time there preaching the Message of Jesus in the synagogue and the people wanted him to stay longer. But he felt he had to get back to Jerusalem and so he declined, promising to return later for a longer stay. He sailed to Caesarea and went from there to Jerusalem and then on to Antioch, his home base.

Because of all the competing religions and the temptations that abounded, Corinth was a tough place to be a Christian. So when Paul left them, there was a degree of backsliding and the emergence of different factions within the church. This distressed Paul greatly and he wrote several letters of admonishment and encouragement, two of which are included in the New Testament.

Summer In Art And Literature Ripening Seed by Colette is a delightful novel set on the beaches of the Emerald Coast in Brittany. It tells the story of Philippe and Vinca and a long, hot holiday summer spent swimming, fishing and playing on the beach. It is very much a “summer” novel, redolent of the sights, sounds and smells of the perfect seaside summer holiday. The sea haunts every page, as it does the lives of the two main characters. Philippe is 16 and he and his family are sharing a house by the sea with the family of the 15 year old Vinca. The two families have spent their summer holidays together in the same house for

as long as the two children can remember and Philippe has known Vinca since she was a little girl. The end of the holiday approaches and the families must return to Paris where the two teenagers will be parted until the following summer.

Gradually, they realise that there is something more to their relationship than just being childhood friends.

In a sense, this is a simple tale of first love. But there are complexities below the surface, just as there are hidden depths below the shimmering surface of the sea. Philippe and Vinca discover that their childhoods are over

as they explore the true significance of their new and uneasy feelings for each other. And then there is the mysterious Madame Dalleray, the older woman who comes into Philippe’s life…

The themes are beautifully developed and described in elegant language (translated, of course, from the French). It is a short novel, but one that repays slow reading and rereading.

Any number of French Impressionist paintings would complement Ripening Seed. I have chosen The Beach at Trouville

by Monet, if for no other reason than that it is in the National Gallery in London.

French Impressionist paintings are such an established part of Western history of art that it is worth remembering how extraordinarily revolutionary they were in late 19th century Paris. The

way the Impressionists used paint to create light and colour- and a new way of seeing things – shocked the artistic establishment. They would often paint in the open air, itself a revolutionary technique for its time. In this painting there are even some grains of sand mixed into the paint, presumably blown up onto the canvas while Monet was creating his masterpiece.

Just as Ripening Seed captures the essence of summer on the beach, so does this painting. It was painted in 1870, some 50 years before Ripening Seed was published, but it captures a similar atmosphere. Are these figures Philippe and Vinca’s mothers, perhaps speculating on the future of their two children?

Elderflower Recipes There are still elderflowers to be found in hedges; they can be picked and put in the freezer for making at a later date.

Elderflower Cordial Elderflower Champagne 20 heads elderflowers 2 tbs white wine vinegar 1.2 litres water 700 gms granulated sugar 1.3 kg granulated sugar 4.5 litres water 1 sliced lemon 7 lemons 75 g citric acid – obtainable from Method: chemists, health food shops etc Put vinegar, sugar and water Method: into a sterilised bucket with 4 Bring water to the boil and add large elderflower heads. sugar and lemon. Remove from Squeeze and quarter the heat when sugar has dissolved. lemons and add to mixture.

Add flower heads and citric Stand for 24 hours, then strain and acid, bring to the boil again. bottle into clean glass bottles.

Stand aside and leave to steep until Ready for drinking in a few cool. Strain and bottle into clean airtight days but the longer it is left, the bottles which have been sterilised. more alcoholic it becomes!

Dilute to taste and serve chilled.

This keeps for 3 months.

City Councillors’ News Highways England has launched a public consultation on the M3 Junction 9 improvement scheme, which runs until Thursday 8 July 2021. This is the second consultation on the scheme.

Since the first consultation in 2019, there have been significant changes made to the scheme in response to comments and concerns that were raised. Notably, access to the A33 and Kings Worthy from Winnall is now separated from the access to the A34 following concerns about the need to cross two lanes over a short length of carriageway.

Hampshire Highways are continuing with work to improve the flood prevention measures on Overton Road. This will mean that the road under the A303 will be closed to all traffic towards the end of August.

Signs should give precise details of closures and diversions.

Jackie’s County Corner This month Dr Phil Marter, archaeologist and University lecturer, invited me to join him at their ‘annual dig’. This year it was at Morn Hill. Having been one of a team researching the history of this huge camp seven years ago now, it was fascinating seeing it brought to life on the ground by second year University of Winchester students as part of their course work.

Even whilst I was there, one student found a fragment of a comb, clearly stamped made in the USA. Winchester welcomed over 700,000 Americans through the camp in the last year of the war and the impact on the life and the economy of the city must have been immense.The memorial to everyone who passed through the camp is outside the Great Hall.

As I write, we don’t know what the trajectory of the Delta variant will be or even what the future holds, but the lockdown has meant that consultations are continuing online for now. Two pilot areas have been chosen to trial leaving the grass longer for biodiversity. One is Alresford. In other areas, you are asking for your verges to be left too. It’s a fine line between 24

The County Council had its first live meeting- at the hotel within the Ageas bowl, and after a stuttering start because of Covid 19 regulations, the first Cabinet will be on July 13th. The County’s Forward plan lists an additional £1million to top up the Government scheme for installation of better broadband in the county. With several schemes ‘on the go’ in this division, I will be supporting that decision.

After staying on to steer the County Council during the pandemic, John Coughlan is retiring and Carolyn Williamson, will be the new Chief Executive. Carolyn has been the Deputy Chief Executive and as Director of Corporate Resources has a firm grip on the finances of the County Council (budget £2.1bn) which is exactly what is needed right now.

Finally, conscious that much of the traffic on the roads at peak times is school traffic, I am researching school transport plans in our area. If your child is starting school, pre school or nursery, I’d be pleased to hear how you will balance your work and school transport needs.

Micheldever & Stratton Pre School It has been an interesting term last term and the children have all enjoyed some excellent learning opportunities surrounded by our term’s topic of growing and our families. We were extremely lucky to watch our caterpillars grow from a tiny seed, to full grown caterpillars, into chrysalis’s and then into beautiful butterflies which we released into the big wide world for them to explore. We also managed to plant some sunflowers of our own too, which we are lovingly taking care of to turn into giant sunflowers that we can measure and grow. We are also lucky that our own little preschool family are growing too, our other topic on families and the family tree has shown that it’s not only our own family that we are a part of but that we are also a part of others families too. We also learnt that families come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and that we are all important and valued. Our next terms topic will be focused on transport, lots of our children have been interested in how vehicles move, where they go and why. We are looking forward to taking part in the plaque unveiling in Micheldever Station

on the 3rd of July in honour of the first car journey ever undertaken. What a fantastic opportunity for the children and it links in so nicely with our topic.

We do have some very fun events planned for the coming month, we are looking forward to having some group and family photos taken. We are also really looking forward to our end of term graduation for our preschool leavers. It is always a happy but sad time for the staff and for the parents as we wish our preschool leavers well on the next step of our educational journey. We are also really sad that Claire our Chair is hanging up her preschool hat for the last time at the end of this term too, Claire has been an inspiration to the preschool and a great support to not just the children, but the parents, staff and committee.

We’re very lucky that Sam is taking over the Chair role and we know that she will be an excellent support for us all. We will need a secretary though for September, it is an important role for the preschool and we would love to welcome new members to our preschool, if you feel that you would be able to take on this role and want to help out your local community preschool, please do get in touch with us. We’re all very friendly and it’s always nice to meet new faces too.

A34 Three Maids Hill – Bridge Repairs I wanted to write and provide you with an update on the dates of the closures for the bridge repair work taking place at the Three Maids Hill junction.

The latest progress report shows that closures on the A34 southbound (between the A303 and Kings Worthy) will finish on the morning of Wednesday 14 July.

Then from Friday 16 July to Wednesday 29 September, the A34 northbound carriageway will be closed overnight between the exit and entry slip roads at Three Maids Hill only. Traffic will be diverted off the A34 via the exit slip road at the junction, around the Three Maids Hill roundabout, then re-join the A34 via the northbound entry slip road.

All closures will be between 9pm and 6am, Monday to Friday nights only.

Diversions During southbound closures, signed diversions are in place via the A303 and M3 for motorway permitted vehicles, and via the A303 and A33 for nonmotorway vehicles. The B3420 Andover Road North from Three Maids Hill towards Winchester is not an approved diversion for this project, as it is highly populated with residential properties.

We’d advise all motorists to stick to the signed diversion routes as they have been chosen with both suitability and safety in mind. We’d also encourage drivers to stick to speed limits and follow appropriate signage to ensure the safety of fellow road users.

Please note that these works are subject to change, due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. We’ll advertise the closures on yellow signs placed in advance at the junction and alongside the A34, as well as via our Highways England South East twitter account.

Deer Vehicle Collisions This time of year often brings with it a rise in deer vehicle collisions. The following advice is what to do if you are involved in one, or become aware of a situation in which you might need to know what to do next.

STAY SAFE AND REPORT THE INCIDENT If you see an injured deer on the roadside?

- Pull over at a safe place - Call the Police.

- Giving as precise a location as you can (eg What3Words) - They will deal with the situation and have access to specialists.

- Do not try to assist or move the deer as this can put you in danger.

If you hit a deer while driving, your priorities, in this order, are: - Keep yourself 3 2 7 and anyone with9 you as safe as you7 can 2
