In Praise of Trees A circular walk of only 3 miles which will take 2 hours.

For half a mile we walk through rough woodland below a dense tree canopy.

There is no formal pathway. Ground cover is mainly dog’s mercury but there are some small partially-concealed fallen branches, brambles and stinging nettles. Stout walking shoes and covered legs are recommended.

We will: Measure the girth of a Lime Tree.

Discover a Milestone from coaching days.

Wonder at the extensive canopy of a massive Holm Oak. Walk through Parkland beside a row of majestic Sweet Chestnut Trees.

Our route takes in: A Roman Road, a Coaching route, an A Road, a Motorway and the tranquillity of traditional English Parkland.

Dogs on leads welcome. Ensure Poo is picked up and disposed of appropriately.

View from the Vicarage Living With Risk There’s risk in nearly everything we do in life so the withdrawal of restrictions following the covid pandemic understandably comes with risks.

Many keen to be independent and free again will delight in the lack of regulation. Others more cautiously will still want to balance their freedom against the risk of abandoning all restraints too quickly.

Some professions inevitably run higher risks than others. The military have shown themselves familiar through this pandemic with assessing risk and coming up with a pragmatic solution. During the pandemic, surgeons conscious of the risk of delaying treatment have had to balance the risk to themselves and their colleagues against the risk to the patient of delay.

The Christian life is no less risky.

Whilst the end of our Christian lives is assured and an eternity awaits–the course of our lives on this earth may be less certain.

Christians in one part of the world may seem to have untroubled lives and their faith apparently never put under pressure and attacked. Others living in India or the Middle East or North Africa may live with the risk of their faith leading to extreme hardship not only for themselves but for their families as well.

Jesus told his disciples in Matthew’s gospel chapter 10 that he was sending them out as sheep amongst wolves.

They needed to be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

Combining those two qualities of shrewdness and innocence is no mean feat. It takes much grace to be able to handle both extremes. There will be misunderstanding even in the Dever valley when we speak up for the person of Christ. Jesus added a reminder to the disciples overwhelmed by the immensity of the risks and task ahead of them. He reminded them of the promise of His Spirit speaking through us and always present – they would never be left alone.

August is a different month for many transitioning between jobs and schools and usually dominated by holidays. I do hope it will be a good month for you.

As we emerge from this pandemic, let’s make grace our primary aim.

We need to show compassion and understanding to each other as each of us wrestle through the implications and come to differing conclusions.

Let’s celebrate that we can live and worship together more freely, but also continue to love and care for our neighbour. As our society prepares to embrace life post-pandemic, my prayer is that we continue to show the world how to honour, value and be gracious to all those around us, whatever that might look like.

News from Woodmancote & Popham In June we held our first fundraising event for St James since before the pandemic started.

What a joy it was to gather in Penny and Colin Dixon’s beautiful garden on a perfect June evening for drinks and canapes. Some of us had not seen one another for many months, so it was a happy time of reunion and catching up.

The setting was perfect, with a golden light from the sun as it gradually sank lower over College Wood and the field behind the garden. Thanks to everybody’s generosity we raised over £800 from ticket sales and the raffle–a much needed boost for church funds as we face a challenging year ahead. We are so happy for Rob Rees whose Ordination took place at Winchester Cathedral on 4th July and we look forward to seeing him now and again at St James as he takes up his new role in the Upper Dever Benefice.

We have just one service in August, Sunday 8th at 6pm and an early notice for your diaries–our Harvest Festival will take place on Sunday 19th September, followed by a Harvest Lunch and we would love to see you there.

The sunshine in July was such a wonderful relief to us all. After such a strange year, with so much cold and wet weather, we have been blessed with warmth and sunshine. Somehow life is beginning to feel normal. I think the farmers have begun harvest only a week later than they usually start. The country is also getting back to some form of normality and, God willing, we will learn to live with this awful virus.

Here in Woodmancott we celebrated our Patronal service on 18th July. John took the service and Iain Henderson gave a thought provoking talk. We sang! Be it behind a mask to the music provided

by Sheelagh and John with their Bose which was excellent. So wonderful to hear voices fill the Church. I can’t tell you how amazing it felt to be back in the Church to worship and thank God for all we have.

Afterwards we gathered in the evening sun to chat with a glass of wine and nibbles.

I hope the sunshine continues and everyone enjoys the summer and so we are able to relax and build up our resistance for the winter.

Micheldever Village Store Let me introduce myself. I am Rajeev and by the time that you read this article I should be the owner of the village store in the centre of Micheldever village. If I am not, then I will be very shortly thereafter.

As soon as the purchase is complete, I will need about four weeks to prepare the premises as the village store.

My background and experience is in running stores, some of you may know my store in Winchester – Nirmala Food. My hopes for the store in Micheldever are to provide a service that best meets the needs and wishes of the Micheldever community.

As soon as I am the owner of the shop I, and members of my family, will be on site getting things ready. Please do stop by and say “hello” – I really look forward to

getting to know you. You might also give me your ideas of what you might hope the store to provide – some of which I may be able to provide immediately, others may take a bit of time, as I build the business.

I already have a good idea of what those wishes might be as I have been provided with the questionnaire that was circulated when the community society was looking to provide a shop. I hope that I can match those hopes – the relationship that develops between my family, serving in the shop, and the community will be the route to that success.

I very much look forward to meeting you and being part of your daily lives.

Dever Society Photography Competition The winner of the Dever Society Spring Photography Competition was Anna Parker with 'Grow Your Own in Lockdown' and is featured on The Dever front cover this month.

Anna said about her photo: “We picked up an acorn in the winter and popped it in the acorn vase at the start of the winter lockdown, by spring and the recent end of lockdown this is how well it was doing (better than the humans!).” Steve Brine, selected the winning entry from three previously announced category winners.

Steve said that it was a difficult choice between the three category winners, but he felt that Anna’s photo really summed up where we are as

Channel Swim Local girl Madeleine Thomas, a pupil of Westgate School, was a member of the successful Winchester City Penguin junior girls SEA6 team that completed the Channel night crossing in 10 hours 18 minutes on 9th July. Just 17 minutes over the record.

Micheldever School News for August A very happy summer from all of us here at Micheldever Church of England Primary School.

Firstly, an apology that we had to cancel our community open afternoon. As you can imagine, we were hugely disappointed not to be able to open our doors to you all but I am sure you understand. Please see our website if you would like to see any of the photos taken of the exhibitions.

We were however, delighted to be able to attend and offer our support at the Ellis Journey plaque unveiling at Micheldever Station. It was such a wonderful event to be a part of and for the children at the school to have the opportunity to practise their interviewing skills and to sit in some of the vehicles was a memorable experience for them. Our thanks and gratitude go out to everyone who helped to make this possible.

We have had a superb end to the year with sporting events, a trip to Marwell Zoo for the whole school and our Year 6 leavers service being a highlight.

The end of the academic year is always tinged with some sadness as we say goodbye to our Year 6 cohort. This current year 6 cohort have been a real credit to the

school in all their endeavours, particularly over the challenges of the last 2 years.

We wish them all the very best as they leave us and we know their secondary school are getting outstanding children.

We shall be holding our open afternoon for all parents and children who are thinking about joining us in the 2022/23 academic year in the Autumn term. Please see our website for more information for dates and times at www.micheldever.hants.sch.uk.

Parish Council News Southbrook Cottages Planning Application It has been noted that some residents are confused about the planning application for the development of the garage site at Southbrook Cottages in Micheldever. The planning application is being made by Winchester City Council (WCC) and can be viewed on their website using the planning reference 21/01279/FUL. The Parish Council and residents of Southbrook Cottages were included by WCC in the consultations on the plans for the flats and also in respect of the proposals to improve parking provision prior to the planning application being submitted.

The Parish Council has not approved the planning application for the proposed development at Southbrook Cottages. Along with close neighbours, the Parish Council are invited to comment upon the application prior to it being considered by the Planning Authority (in this case WCC).

A Winchester City Council Planning Officer would normally then make a planning decision, taking into account the comments made by the Parish Council and others. As this planning application is being made by WCC there will be more stringent rules on how it is considered and it will go to the WCC Planning Committee made up of City Councillors who would have to declare any ‘interest’, financial or otherwise, in the application eg owning property nearby or working for a developer of the project.

All parish councillors are required to complete a Disclosure of Pecuniary Interests form each year and these are available to be viewed on the WCC 10

website. In addition, at the beginning of each meeting councillors are asked to declare any interests (financial or personal) that they have in respect of any matters on the agenda and these are then noted in the minutes which are published on the website www.micheldeverparish.org.uk The Parish Council have decided, after improvements were made to the parking provision at Southbrook Cottages, to comment in support of the planning application due to the need for small, affordable homes for local people.

When the Housing Needs Survey report for Micheldever Parish was published last year it identified 20 households with a local connection to Micheldever Parish who have been assessed by WCC as needing rented social housing. 12 of these require 1 bed properties and 5 require 2 bed properties, whilst 3 need larger properties. WCC own 44 homes in Micheldever Parish and over the last 5 years 12 have become vacant. At that turnover rate it would take at least 9 years to satisfy the demand of people currently on the waiting list and this is not accounting for any new registrations which may take place over that period.

The Questor The Wild Gospel..…

….. One last time Luke must have been very keen to maintain the momentum of his account of Paul’s travels because he hardly pauses for breath between telling us about the end of the second journey and starting on the third. In fact he doesn’t even start a new chapter in his book of the Acts of the Apostles!

You will recall that at the end of his second missionary journey, Paul returned to Antioch which was his base. He stayed there for some time before launching out on his third journey. As before, he started off by visiting the churches he had established in modern day Turkey to encourage them. Then, as he had promised when he briefly visited at the end of his second journey, he went to Ephesus.

Ephesus was quite a place in those days.

It was a large and highly sophisticated Roman colony which boasted the second largest library in the world after Alexandria, the Library of Celsus. Its other principal features were its harbour which made it a natural centre for trade; and the temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Artemis was the ‘mother goddess’ and the temple was built in 550BC. The Ephesians regarded themselves as the guardians of this sacred place – to which people flocked from all over the known world.

The other significant feature of Ephesus was the theatre which held 24000 people.

You can visit Ephesus today and see the extent of the place. There has been a huge amount of reconstruction and excavation and it is amazing to walk through the 14

city and imagine Paul there – making tents in the market place, visiting the library and the theatre – which is an awesome place where concerts are still held and which has amazing acoustics.

Paul spent over two years in Ephesus, teaching in the synagogue and then holding daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus so that all the Jews and Greeks in the province of Asia heard the Message of Jesus. The Bible tells us that God performed extraordinary miracles through Paul and that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to those who were ill and they were cured.

Then Paul’s success in preaching the Message of Jesus began to cause concern to the craftsmen who made their living from selling silver replicas of Artemis.

One of them named Demetrius called them all together and told them that not only was their trade at risk but also Artemis herself might be discredited.

He got them worked up into a frenzy and soon the whole city was in uproar.

They grabbed two of Paul’s travelling companions and marched them off to the theatre. Paul wanted to go there and confront the crowd, but his friends persuaded him not to.

There was general confusion in the theatre with everyone yelling different things and some not knowing why they were there! This went on for two hours and then the city clerk took control of proceedings. When the people had quietened down, he reminded them that they had proper legal procedures The Dever–August 2021

for dealing with their concerns and that rioting was not acceptable. Then he dismissed them and they all went home.

After the uproar had died down Paul left Ephesus and continued his journey through Macedonia and Greece, visiting the churches and building them up.

He stayed for three months in Greece and then retraced his steps back through Macedonia. He didn’t think it was wise to go to Ephesus again so he sailed by and disembarked at the port of Miletus which is to the south of Ephesus. From there he sent for the elders of the church in Ephesus so that he could say goodbye to them.

The account in Acts chapter 20 of this farewell meeting is very moving.

Paul reminds them of all that he had done when he was with them and says that he feels compelled to return to Jerusalem – even though he has been

warned many times that he will face prison and hardship. The elders are very upset because they know this means they will never see him again.

“When Paul had finished speaking, he knelt down with them and prayed. They all wept as they embraced him and kissed him. What grieved them most was his statement that they would never see his face again. Then they accompanied him to the ship” – Acts 20 vs 36 – 38 Paul and his companions sailed on, stopping to visit more churches, until they reached Caesarea. Everywhere they stopped there were emotional farewells with people begging Paul not to go to Jerusalem. But he was resolute and, as Jesus had done 25 years earlier, he set his face towards Jerusalem, ready to accept whatever befell him.

Winchester Heritage Open Days Friday 10th To Sunday 19th September 2021 Well, what a year we’ve had – not just Covid but also Winchester Heritage Open Days, these now under the umbrella of the new and exciting Hampshire History Trust, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation! Hampshire History Trust that aims to celebrate the rich and diverse history and heritage of the county of Hampshire.

Expanding Heritage Open Days into a wider ‘festival’, running community projects such as a Blue Plaque project and further developing the brilliant HistBites podcasts. For more information visit the Trust’s website https://hampshirehistorytrust.com This is the sixth year of the open days and they will again be a mix of digital and in-person events, building on the success of these in 2020. Yet again, it is the

community behind the open days that has enabled us to produce another fantastic programme for this year. As ever, the organisers have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm, willingness and positivity of many organisations and individuals to be involved. The programme is designed to draw people’s interest into Winchester and its surroundings through an amazing choice of talks, tours, exhibitions and family fun – all for free!

Digital events will include pre-recorded walks and talks, live streaming of lectures and performances, and specially commissioned films and audio available on Winchester Heritage Open Days very own YouTube and podcast channels. There are also great in-person events for everyone to enjoy.

Citizens Advice Winchester District I’ve been living in my privately rented flat for years. I generally have a good relationship with my landlord but I just can’t get them to carry out various repairs that have built up. How can I get them to act - and what exactly do they have to do?

This must be a very frustrating situation.

The law states that your landlord must provide accommodation that is safe, healthy and free from things that could cause serious harm. (This is for England - housing is devolved in Wales.)

You don’t say exactly what repairs are needed. If you have problems such as electrical wiring that you think might be faulty, or there’s damp, or an infestation by pests, the landlord has a legal obligation to put things right.

Landlords are also responsible for the maintenance of the general structure, and fittings such as boilers and radiators; basins, baths and toilets; and the drains.

The first step is to contact your landlord again, in writing. Include photographs of the problems. Keep a record of all communications and evidence relating to the disrepair.

If that doesn’t prompt any action, our advisors at Citizens Advice can help with next steps. These could include contacting your local council (who will have dedicated officers for dealing with disrepair in private rented properties) or asking for a visit by the environmental health team.

Tenants can take their landlords to court to force them to carry out repairs. However, it’s worth getting some advice and thinking carefully before embarking on this route.

City Councillors’ News We expect that, by the time that this newsletter is distributed, lockdown restrictions will have been further eased.

This welcome step should see almost all the traffic restrictions in Winchester, including those in Hyde Street and North Walls, removed. Most facilities, including the Theatre Royal and the cinemas, are now open, as are pubs, restaurants and libraries. Most people in Winchester have now been fully vaccinated, but we do urge some caution as there are still many that remain vulnerable to Covid infection.

Work has started to prepare the route of the cycle path from South Wonston to Harestock. The new surface should start to be laid at the end of August, although recent rainfall has delayed previous work. The path should still be complete before this Christmas.

Major police operations successfully prevented illegal gig racing on the A33 near Micheldever during June.

The City Council has stepped up its activities in that same area to deal with planning and environmental problems.

Specialist contractors have been engaged to assist the Council to ensure that planning permissions are being properly adhered to. This process is likely to take many months to complete. We will provide updates throughout this period.

Southern Water are to give an update to Wonston Parish Council in September about the on-going problems with the Water Treatment Works by Saddlers Close in Sutton Scotney. A solution may have been identified by then. In the meantime, the City Council are monitoring the activities on the site.

Parish Councils will now be holding meetings in person, although you need to check their websites for details of any restrictions or procedures for attendance.

Our Parish Councils do not meet in August, so their next meetings are on: Micheldever PC – Wednesday 1st September at Northbrook Hall, Micheldever Wonston PC – Wednesday 8th September at Victoria Hall, Sutton Scotney South Wonston PC – Monday 13th September at South Wonston Pavilion.

All meetings start at 7.30pm.

Micheldever & Stratton Pre School Saying a Fond Farewell This term is always mixed with emotions as we always end up saying goodbye to those children who are moving onto school in September. We feel sad because we will no longer be helping them on their educational journey, happy because we are so thrilled to see them so excited about their new journey and incredibly proud of them and how they have changed since they first came to us and the journey that they have taken whilst with us. We are so incredibly lucky to have a job where we get to see such development changes in a short period of time and we get to be a part of our children’s lives and their families. This is definitely a job that we love. However, our sadness and excitement doesn’t just stop at the children this term but also at a couple of big changes that are currently happening for the preschool.

Sadly, Claire our Committee Chair is finally after 6 years of commitment, dedication and hard work to the preschool hanging up her hat and leaving us all. She has been instrumental and a true rock of the preschool for years, she has been the Committee Chair for the last four of the six years to which she has dedicated

her own personal time. I don’t know one person whose life has not been touched by Claire and her dedication to ensuring that the preschool has gone from strength to strength. She will be very sorely missed.

So, if you do know Claire, please do pass on your thanks to her for all her hard work, dedication, commitment, and loyalty. We are excited though too, to be welcoming our new Committee Chair - Sam. We know that she will be a complete asset to the preschool and will help us in the next stage of our journey and what a journey it is going to be. We

are proud that she is going to be leading us at the helm. We are also going to be saying goodbye to Julie who is running our Forest School sessions. Julie is taking on a new role elsewhere and we wish her all the best. However, we will be gaining a new Forest School lead with our very own Sarah, who has worked in the woods for many a year and helping the children on their outdoor learning. We are very lucky that Sarah has agreed to take on the role and we know that she will continue the excellent work that Julie had started.

Our most exciting news though is that we are on the move. We will be saying a fond farewell to the East Stratton Village Hall and we’d like to thank all the Village hall committee for their commitment to us, their support and their loyalty.

We are though so excited to be moving to a part of the building in the Warren Hall at Micheldever Station. This is such a fantastic opportunity for us to be established within the new community.

We must say a massive thank you to Paul and the Warren Hall committee for giving us this opportunity to bring the preschool to the community and we are so grateful to be working alongside you all. We will have a dedicated room for us to use daily and with all the local amenities on our doorstep too; we couldn’t be any luckier. We will be re-opening in the September and are looking forward to being able to provide more sessions with potentially longer hours for all the pre-school children in the surrounding communities.
