Spring Thoughts Spring! It really IS the best of times. Even if the day you’re reading this on happens to be cold and grey, there’ll be wild flowers at the roadside, sap bursting in the trees, nest-building, lambs in the fields and tadpoles hatching.

I’m always thrilled by Hampshire springs. I grew up in Manchester and lived in other big cities until my mid 30s.

When, 5 years into our marriage my husband got a job in Hampshire, we left London fumes and everblaring sirens and together with our toddlers, discovered birdsong and hedgehogs in our first ever garden.

We’d moved, in late spring, into a house which had been uninhabited for a while. There by the back door was a long-tailed tits’ nest in a thorny bush. The nest, long and tube-like, was a triumph of architecture in itself and, despite two noisy and inquisitive toddlers, the tits didn’t abandon the nest and we soon had the joy of watching the little flock flitting from tree to tree in the garden.

But this lovely early part of April is particularly special in 2022 because it leads up to another life-bursting‑out event on April 17th, Easter!

What an earth-shattering impact Good Friday had on our world.

‘Good’ because Jesus Christ’s death nearly 2,000 years ago paved the way for millions, if not billions of people down the centuries to find the life, freedom and hope he offers to those who believe he died in their place.

As spring bursts upon us, the sheer joy of Easter Day will burst into life in our lives again.

Jesus – God on earth, who came for us, is alive from the dead!

Just as those who have known and trusted him during their lives will come alive after they die.

The original Easter really was the CRUX of history, the most important thing that ever happened on earth; God with us, dying in our place.

What looked like a defeat, was actually a thunderous victory. That’s why Peter the outdoorsy, outspoken fisherman was convinced enough to stand up in front of the Temple police and religious chiefs and say, ‘This Jesus, who you rejected, is the only hope. No other name has been or will be given to us by which we can be saved…only this one.’ Acts 4:12 How good it is to be as sure of that truth as we are that Spring is really here!

News from Woodmancote & Popham Our Service in February at St. James’ was led

by Ruth and Roland Guy. We were treated to some very interesting number facts along with a thought provoking Sermon.

Did you know that it is commonly believed that Psalm 118 is the middle of the Bible with exactly 594 chapters either side of it.

594 and 594 add up to 1188 and the verse at the very centre of the Bible is Psalm 118:8. It is sandwiched between the shortest and the longest Psalm. Of course this can depend on what version of the Bible you are using, but interesting nonetheless.

The verse 118:8 says “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man”.

This is most definitely central to Christian

belief and we all need to have faith now more than ever, with the recent terribly sad events unfolding in Ukraine.

Afterwards we were very kindly invited back to Mary Wallis’s house for coffee and biscuits.

This month on Easter Sunday, 17th April, we have a morning Service at 10am.

This Service last took place 3 years ago in Church, so it will be so lovely to be able to celebrate this in the normal way this year. Please do join us.

Thank you Paul and I would like to thank all those who have been such good friends and neighbours over the past 36 years. We will miss you all and the wonderful village activities we have enjoyed over the years, but as one gets older an offer of help from our daughter was not to be rejected.

I personally would like to thank the Lunch Club for their very generous donation of a gardening voucher, together with some fruit bushes. The garden we are sharing is huge, and has some tumbled down fruit cages with brambles and weeds growing up through, so I have been busy digging up the brambles and nettles prior to resurrecting them . There are many mature and overgrown shrubs,–magnolia, camelia, hydrangea and all those plants that one

cannot grow in the chalk gardens around Micheldever, so I shall be challenged to learn about their cultivation and care. The japonica is bursting with flowers and now the daffodils and primroses are in flower around the ponds. Even Mrs Duck has built a nest in the willow tree I’m told!

I have a new challenge in learning how to drive a 5 ft tractor mower that runs on diesel and has an awful lot of knobs and levers, but I have just done the first cut which was badly needed.

There is a lot of wildlife around in spite of being near a main road, and with the river Mole running through the meadows quite a lot of egrets, ducks and herons.

A Tribute to the late Adrian Bates who died in January 2022 Adrian Michael Buckland Bates was born in south London in 1936 but at the age of 3 years the family became a casualty of WW2 and were evacuated to Sussex where he grew up. He was a pupil at East Grinstead County Grammar School and then a student at King’s College London where he attained a B.Sc degree.

Adrian said he couldn’t remember when he didn’t work. First as a paper boy at a young age, giving out Christmas cards to customers which gave rise to generous tips. Later on a farm, which is now under Gatwick Airport, Adrian liked tending the pigs but not the chickens. He was a competent rider, owning a horse called Knight. Between leaving school and college he worked on the building sites of Crawley new town learning many skills. For a while he drove taxis but the new inhabitants couldn’t remember where they lived in the burgeoning new town! Adrian was still a student when he met Gail on the Brighton to Victoria line and they were married in Worth church, Pound Hill in August 1959 Adrian joined IBM UK Ltd in 1962 and in 1980 was offered a position as Manager of Executive Education at IBM Hurlsey.

This brought him, Gail and their 3 sons to Micheldever. While employed and travelling abroad he was known as ‘Gail’s husband’ but on retirement came into his own as someone who could repair or renew notice boards, remake the church flagpole, fix lighting problems and make bespoke furniture for people in the village. The projects were mainly carried out in Adrian’s self-built 8

barn/ workshop and he soon became “Mr Fix It”.

During his life Adrian took up an interest in boats and starting with the construction of a Mirror dinghy and eventually progressed to fitting out a 32ft Hunter sailing boat in which many trips were made across the Channel and as far west as Falmouth.

On retirement Adrian spent several years as a voluntary mentor for the Princes Trust which he found rewarding. In 2016 Adrian became involved in a controversial protest group regarding a proposal to construct an anaerobic waste plant at Micheldever Station. He did an enormous amount of research and challenged the company; realising that they had not done their homework. So together with other members of MAG, Micheldever Action Group, he managed to get the scheme dropped.

To crown it all “Ancestry.co.uk revealed that the Bates family claimed origins in Micheldever as the names Hooker and Buckland came up. Adrian’s Great Grandmother, Martha Buckland, married Henry J Bates, a coachman. Adrian was a practical as well as an intellectual and trustworthy man. Adrian was immensely proud of the achievements of his 3 Sons and 9 Grandchildren and his company is greatly missed. GB The Dever - April 2022

Micheldever C of E Primary School A very happy Easter to everyone from all of us here at Micheldever C of E Primary School. As we move into April, we are eagerly awaiting Easter and looking forward to celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. We are excited to be putting on our service at St Mary’s Church in which we will retell the Easter story and explore the emotions that Jesus’ friends would have experienced at different points throughout the story.

The past month has been full of learning experiences for us. We celebrated Science Week in a number of different ways within the school from building working viaducts to trying to work out how to separate flour and raisins that had got muddled up to creating stop motion videos. Our children have been improving their singing once again as we prepare for the Easter story. We have taken part in football fixtures, have signed up to the Vocal Ambassador scheme to further our children’s singing opportunities and continued to enjoy trips and experiences

outside of the normal school day. We are also looking forward to sharing our work that we have done on our project learning with parents at our exhibitions later this month.

We wish all our families and our local community a happy and restful Easter. As I am sure many of you have been doing, we will be holding those who are caught up in the current conflict in our thoughts and prayers especially during these Easter weeks.

Ukraine The appeal for clothes, food, blankets, medicines and toiletries went out to the community on Thursday 3 March.

The response was overwhelming, both to Juliet Pattinson’s porch and the church.

On Monday 7 March two packed car loads were delivered to Beechdown Leisure centre for onward delivery to Poland.

Well done Micheldever. As the humanitarian disaster develops over time, there may yet be further calls when the detailed need is clearer.

Micheldever Parish’s villages are all involved in celebrating the Platinum Jubilee from Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June 2022. Events will take place in Woodmancott, East Stratton, Micheldever Station and Micheldever village across the days.

Full details of all events and locations will be listed at www. micheldevervillages.org, shared on noticeboards across the parish and appear in the Dever’s April, May and June editions.

Micheldever Village’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations take place on Sunday 5th June Our main event will be a street party along Church Street. The street party sets up from 12.00 for a 12.30 start and runs through the afternoon.

The street party will include a ‘Kings and Queens Parade’–a fancy dress parade for local children, from 12.30-12.45, including a prize-giving ceremony for the top three fancy-dressed entrants.

The street party lunch begins at 1pm.

Parade entrants need to dress up following the theme of ‘Kings and Queens’. The children will parade together along Church Street, passing the street party as they go, who will all cheer them along.

There is a competition for the best fancy dress. The judging will occur during the parade, and the presentation to the winners will take place immediately after the parade has completed.

The Gardening Page Caroline Knight has now moved away from Micheldever, She used to produce some monthly handy hints for gardeners. We would very much like someone, or indeed several people, to follow her example.

Parish Council News Parish Assembly – Wednesday 27th April 7.30pm at East Stratton Village Hall All residents are warmly invited to attend the Parish Assembly. The first that we have been able to hold since 2019.

This is a less formal meeting and offers residents an opportunity to find out more about the projects and work that the Parish Council has been engaged in.

There will be a short presentation from Stuart Mills, of Winchester Super Homes, focusing on their home energy retrofit project which we hope will be of interest to all residents but perhaps particularly for those living in older properties.

Parish Council Election Parish Councillors hold office for four years. The next election is scheduled for 5th May 2022 and the Notice of Election will be published by the City Council on 21st March 2022. Nomination papers will then be available on their website or can be requested from the City Council Electoral Services Team or via Jocelyn, the Clerk. Nominations must be received in Winchester by 4pm on Tuesday 5th April 2022.

Micheldever Station Village Gateways

Residents living on Overton Road or in the homes between Overton Road and the railway line have been sent a consultation letter, with a copy of the proposed village gateway designs, and asked to comment on the proposals. Thank you to those who have already responded. These responses will be shared with the HCC Safer Roads Team.

The proposed design is also available on our website www.micheldeverparish. org.uk and residents living outside the consultation area are welcome to forward comments to the Clerk.

Parish Litter Pick A litter pick in Micheldever has been provisionally arranged for Saturday 9th April but, at the time of writing, we do not have sufficient volunteers to make the event worthwhile. We had hoped that we might also be able to hold an event in Micheldever Station but have had no response at all from residents there. Please let Jocelyn, the Clerk, know asap if you would like to participate in a community litter pick.

Dementia Support - Survey Dementia Support – Hampshire & IOW is a new charity that has been set up to respond to the needs of local people living with dementia and their family carers by providing emotional support, information, and signposting.

Blue Lamp Trust The Blue Lamp Trust is a Hampshire based registered charity (charity number 1137786). It is a unique partnership between Hampshire Police, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, business and the community.

The Trust promotes community safety and security in Hampshire through two schemes The Bobby Scheme and the Cyber Bobby Scheme.

The Bobby Scheme The Bobby Scheme operates throughout Hampshire. It provides practical help with home safety and security to those over 65, vulnerable due to circumstance, disabled (over 18) and victims of burglary and domestic abuse.

A full crime prevention and fire safety survey is carried out by one of our trained, police-vetted fitters. They will provide both general and specific crime and fire prevention advice to improve home safety. When appropriate our fitters will fit such items as locks, spy‑holes, door chains and smoke alarms, etc. This service is completely free.

The Trust can also supply and fit the Supra C500 Key Safe, an ACPO Police Accredited Key Safe. The cost to supply and fit is £75 inc VAT.

The Cyber Bobby Scheme One of our police checked and trained Cyber advisors will visit the client in their own home and give advice and guidance on basic IT security and how to avoid being affected by a cybercrime or a cyber enabled crime. The service is open to those over 65, disabled (over 18) and victims of cyber crime They will cover such things as; What is cybercrime, cyber and scam prevention advice, how to check privacy settings, signposting to other advice and resources, how to report issues and how to recognise scam emails and text messages. As with the Bobby Scheme the service is completely free.

As well as visits the team can do talks about both schemes to local community and social groups.

WCC’s Multi-Function Devices - Sale The city council is looking to sell off contact Craig Walker via email some of their multi-function devices and CWalker@winchester.gov.uk wanted to gauge interest from parishes or call 07763546880. throughout the district. The devices are the Ricoh IM C3000 or Ricoh MP C307SPF that were acquired around 2 ½ years ago but are still the latest models respectively.

Understandably since purchase usage has steeply declined and so to ensure value for money for the council they are looking for parishes, charities and organizations who would feel they could get some use out of the devices or are looking to upgrade. In the Garden – April Spring is now very evident in the garden as the daffodils and primroses provide an abundance of colour. Daylight hours are longer and have become more so with that extra hour from 27 March. (13 March was a similar time change in the USA and Canada for those that noticed the mistake in the March notes)! Regular weeding and deadheading are the watch words for April.

The Weather On the whole days are warming up but do beware of very cold nights and the occasional sharp frost. Beware of planting out tender plants unprotected.

There will doubtless be some strong winds at times but there should be plenty of sunshine. There will, of course, be April showers but the average rainfall should only be about 42-47mm (11/2 ins).

Around The Garden Protect plants. The warmth of Spring encourages slugs and snails and they can cause considerable damage. If you are not organic spread some slug pellets in and amongst the plants affected. It doesn’t take many to kill off slugs. If you are organic, nematodes are effective. There is, of course, the traditional method of ridding a garden of slugs, namely a beer trap: a jar sunk into the ground with the lip just above ground and filled with beer.

Tidy borders. Set aside some time to do those small jobs around the garden that can make such a difference to appearance.

Lightly fork or hoe the beds to take out any weeds. Put in plant supports as you go.

Start mowing regularly. Grass will be growing steadily as the temperature increases and should be cut regularly to keep 20

it in good condition. For the first few cuts set the blades high. Keep the box on in Spring to allow air, rain and fertiliser to penetrate the earth. Consider aerating and then scarifying the lawn to take out the moss and ‘thatch’.

This does not need to be done every year.

Feed established lawns with fertilisers.

Move and plant evergreen shrubs.

This is a good month to relocate your shrubs. When moving shrubs take as large a root ball as possible, protect from cold winds and keep well watered.

Tie in climbers. Climbing and rambling roses should now be tied in, training the shoots as near horizontal as possible.

Keep planting and dividing perennials.

Hardy perennials will grow quickly if planted now. Feed, mulch and water them well. Lift and divide overgrown clumps of summer flowering herbaceous perennials.

Stake those remaining. Spreading farmyard manure will reap benefits.

Plant Summer bulbs. To produce a succession of flowers, plant summerflowering bulbs, such as dahlias, cannas and gladioli this month.

Continue sowing hardy annuals. It is safe to sow hardy annuals now.

In The Veg Patch Thin out seedlings. If seedlings are not thinned out, the plants will become straggly and won’t crop well at all.

Keep sowing outside successional crops. Lettuce, endives, radish, salad onions, peas, broad beans, spinach, cabbage, turnips, parsnips and beetroot can continue to be sown.

Earth-up early potatoes. Drawing a little soil up over the emerging potato shoots not only protects them from late frosts but it also The Dever - April 2022

encourages the development of roots further up the stems, thereby increasing the yield.

Plant main crop potatoes. This is the latest month to plant main crop potatoes if you want a decent crop.

Home grown strawberries are really delicious and they can be grown in pots either on the patio or indoors.

Wonston Community Café For our February café we were joined by Jane and Ann, members of the local North Hampshire committee of this month’s charity, Young Lives vs Cancer (formerly Clic Sargent). As well as bringing home made cakes for us to sell, Jane and Ann also sold raffle tickets and raised £135. In addition, we raised a magnificent sum of £320 from coffee and cake sales to donate to the charity.

Our thanks must go to our groups of regular supporters – the lady cyclists, ladies from the local aqua class (pictured here), friends and locals from the surrounding villages. We are now attracting visitors from all around Winchester with the mouthwatering display of cakes!

The next Community Café will be at the Victoria Hall, Sutton Scotney, 9.30am–12 noon on Wednesday 20th April when we will be raising funds for Winchester Talking Newspapers, a local charity which provides weekly recordings of extracts from the Hampshire Chronicle and a monthly magazine to those in the Winchester area.

We are a cash only café, last orders 11.45am, lots of free parking.

Donations to our monthly nominated charity are always welcome.

Micheldever & Stratton Pre School Meet the Team For the next four editions, we thought it would be lovely for you all to meet the team and for us to give you all an overview of what our roles are, why we work in Early Years and what our passions and skills are. Every one of our staff love working in Early Years and we each bring a different aspect to the overall care and education for Micheldever & Stratton Preschool.

So Hi, my name is Mrs Nicola Mann‑Rae and I have been working for the preschool since January 2020 as the leader of the preschool. I have been working in Early Years since 2003 and have gained a BA Hons Degree in Early Years, I have managed a charity run preschool before and a much larger nursery before joining the Micheldever & Stratton Preschool family. With five children of my own, I have plenty of hands-on experience too.

I love my job, everyday is different and the development of the children, their thought processes and what they are interested in changes daily and for me this is exciting. The children bring such a resilience with them to preschool everyday that as adults, I feel we have a lot to learn from them. I believe that children have the right to a great Early Years Education that helps them to grow, develop and learn at a pace that suits them, adults are responsible for providing the opportunities to allow children to explore the world around them in a safe, caring, loving, fun environment where every child is treated as an individual. I like to treat each child and their family members as a part of our extended family, this I feel is

important because we all can share in the importance that family bring to one another.

I am passionate about giving children the freedom to be themselves and to enjoy discovering who they are and what skills and talents they have. This is incorporated by my love for learning more about the Hygge approach which is a Danish way of life.

Hygge basically means coziness, although it is much more than this. The team and I are currently training in this approach and incorporating that into our preschool, so that the children, their families and the staff can begin this journey together with the end aim becoming a Hygge accredited preschool.

In short, we visit army facilities all over the country to help us better understand their work, their challenges and inform debate in Parliament.

In recent months we’ve been to Helicopter Command (at RAF Odiham, pictured), Sandhurst, Army Medical Services and the Specialist Weapons School near Westbury where we saw our potent anti‑tank weapons systems. Jackie’s County Corner for April I was pleased and humbled to be a part of the ‘Stand With Ukraine Vigil’ arranged with City of Sanctuary, Southampton and Winchester Visitors Group (who support refugees days to day) and Winchester City Council on Monday 1st March at Abbey Gardens. We notified the public through social media and despite the terribly wet weather, between 300-400 people attended to stand with the Ukrainian people.

There are links to more ways to help on www.hants.gov.uk The storms of late February brought home the fragility of our services. This month, I am looking especially at the services that we need for our education, homes and businesses to function.

Emergency planning: I met with HCC regarding their emergency planning when trees come down, blocking roads. It was an unprecedented event, but I’d really like to see HCC man the phones at the weekend instead of having to make a call to 101 when we know there is a weather event on the way. The best way to report a fallen tree remains online (plus picture if you can) or email roads@hants.gov.uk. In the light of the effects of the storms, will you be amending/ updating your personal emergency plan? I got the chance to speak to some of the tree 26

surgeons and electricians. They deserve our thanks, working in such dreadful conditions.

Electricity: many of you endured power cuts in the recent Dudley, Eunice and Franklin storms.

Some residents are trying to beat electrical dependency by installing Solar Panels and Back Up batteries, using an HCC sponsored scheme last year. With just 25 home projects completed, and 271 cancelled out of over 1500 requests, it is clear that the supply chain isn’t as resilient as hoped. Many people have paid significant deposits. I have raised this with the Leader, Cllr Mans, so if you know someone who committed to this scheme, please ask them to contact me. Thank you.

The Community Fibre Partnership Organisers and I were disappointed that the Gigabit broadband meeting with BDUK and Openreach was postponed until April: another delay to our hopes for a faster service. HCC argue that the junction has been safer since then. I disagree that this is a typical year–the traffic has been so much quieter. I have seen the CCTV footage of two recent accidents: it is distressing to watch, and a pattern is emerging. I have asked for consideration of stop signs as a temporary measure until Junction 9 is complete, but I believe we need to show strength of opinion to National Highways, as they finalise their road scheme for junction 9, right up to the Cart & Horses. City Councillors’ News No decision has yet been made on the number or location of new homes across Winchester District. The City Council is discussing ideas with Parish Councils and City Councillors. This might allocate enough land for 3,000 new homes, with half being added to the larger development areas and market towns, such as Whiteley and Alresford. Most of the others would be allocated to Sir John Moore Barracks (800 new homes), Otterbourne (50-60), South Wonston (50-60) and Sutton Scotney (50-60). Consideration will now be given to where it might be possible to build this number of new homes around these settlements, discussing the issues and options with residents, with a decision due later this year. Please contribute to these discussions, so all views can be included.

Until a decision about housing numbers and allocations is actually made, there can

be no certainty. One major issue is still not in the open – that of the number of houses the City Council will allocate to meet the needs of neighbouring authorities that do not have enough available land. We have also not heard any ideas for where new employment sites might be allowed.

However, for now, it seems that the next Local Plan should not allow development around Micheldever or Micheldever Station.

The City Council are pressing ahead with the sale of the old Leisure Centre at River Park, despite calls from local residents for more consultation. The University of Southampton will be working on their plans over the next year or so before a price is set.

It is great to see pledge cards appearing in windows for the Greening Micheldever campaign. We hope to see these appearing in South Wonston and Sutton Scotney over the coming weeks.
