news&views Minimum wage From October 1, 2016, the National Minimum Wage (NMW) for workers aged between 21 and 25 increased to £6.95 an hour. The rate for 18 to 20-year-old workers increased to £5.55 an hour. The TUC is calling for the harmonisation of rates across ages ranges as part of a 2017 review as well as stronger enforcement against rogue employers. For workers over 25, the National Living Wage was introduced in April 2016 at a rate of £7.20. This will be uprated in April 2017 and the NMW rates will also switch to an April review date. Nationwide has signed up to the Living Wage Foundation and is committed to apply the Foundation’s rates as the minimum hourly rate for employees and to work with contractors, such as Carillion, to extend this rate to their workers. The Foundation rates are currently; £8.45 UK rate and £9.75 London rate. This means that the minimum salary for a Nationwide employee working full-time (35 hours per week) is £15,379 (1,820 hours worked in a year x £8.45). At Nationwide, any additional hours worked, are either paid at agreed overtime rates or time is given back as TOIL. If you work in

Much more than bants

More than 52 per cent of women have experienced some form of sexual harassment at work, a new survey from the TUC has revealed. The survey, Still Just a Bit of Banter? also discovered that 35 per cent of women have heard comments of a sexual nature being made about other women in the workplace, while 32 per cent have been subject to unwelcome jokes of a sexual nature. And worryingly only one per cent of those polled confided in their union rep. “How many times have we heard sexual harassment in the workplace dismissed as ‘just a bit of banter’? It may seem like a joke or even a compliment to those who have never experienced it – but those who have will know just how undermining, humiliating and sometimes terrifying it can be,” says TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady. “The lessons are clear. Carillion agreement NGSU is working with Carillion to revise and refresh the way it consults with the company on behalf of Carillion members. The Union has had recognition rights with Carillion since 2008, following the TUPE transfer of employees from Nationwide to Carillion who continue to work on Nationwide premises. The agreement means NGSU has collective bargaining and individual representation rights for Carillion employees in Levels F, G and H, who are engaged in its activities in delivering services that are within the scope of Carillion’s commercial contract with Nationwide Building Society. Members in Carillion have full access to all Union services and benefits in accordance with NGSU rules.

Fight HIV

World AIDS Day on December 1 is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. Over 100,000 people are living with HIV in the UK. Globally there are an estimated 34 million people who have the virus. Today, scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. Despite this, each year in the UK around 6,000 people are diagnosed with HIV, people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with the condition. World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public and Government that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education. news&views Wage squeeze warning

Workers must not pay the price of Brexit with a squeeze on wages, warns TUC General Secretary Frrances O’Grady. Commenting on a warning from the Bank of England of higher inflation and lower wages, following the fall in value of the pound, Frances O’Grady said: “The Bank’s warning must spur the government into action so that workers don’t pay the price of Brexit.” The Bank’s forecasts show CPI inflation rising to 2.7% in 2017, with average weekly earnings falling to 2.75%, which would mean an increase in real wages of just 0.05%. Added Ms O’Grady: “UK workers already suffered the largest fall in real wages after the financial crisis of any developed country except Greece – they can’t afford another hit to their pay packets. “The Chancellor should use the Autumn Statement to protect jobs and wages, with new investment in infrastructure like roads, rail, green energy and homes. And the national minimum wage must be increased to keep it well ahead of inflation.”

Pick a PEARL The Open University (OU) – supported by the Social Partnerships Network (SPN) – have developed a new website and six free badged online courses for people looking to develop their career or considering a new direction. The PEARL website – standing for Part-time Education for Adults Returning to Learn – offers information, advice and support to guide learners through a range of educational opportunities from short, free online courses through to higher level learning. Learners can use the ‘Advise me tool’ to get personalised advice on the best options for them, browse through a bank of inspirational case studies to see what they too could achieve and get all the information they need to get started.

Let’s talk about MS Support with Multiple Sclerosis is key to coping

M

S is a neurological condition which means it affects your nerves. It’s caused when your immune system isn’t working properly. MS has lots of different symptoms, including fatigue, vision problems or difficulties with walking, but MS is different for everyone. And Nationwide employees have told NGSU that as well as experiencing different symptoms, some have experienced different treatments from managers. What they are all clear about is the fact that they have received excellent support from their Union in helping them cope, talk to colleagues or win adjustments at work. Christine* (not her real name) joined Nationwide in the mid-90’s and is a Consultant, offering specialist advice to teams across her Division and the wider organisation. Unlike many, she says she received a speedy diagnosis (due in part to the private healthcare provided by Nationwide). “I well remember walking out of the consultant’s office realising that now I was disabled I had become part of the population that, statistics consistently showed, suffers detriment. It felt a big deal but, with my initial symptoms in remission, it was hard to know how to react. “I knew nothing about MS and decided early on to only tell people on a need-to-know basis. I did choose to tell my immediate line manager and he was incredibly supportive and agreed not to share the information more widely.”

When Ripleybased Financial Planning Manager Lucy Young was diagnosed with MS she was naturally devastated. “I’m only 30 so, as you can imagine, it was a complete bolt from the blue – you just don’t expect it to happen to you,” she says. Thankfully, Lucy had Legal and General cover and contacted them while she waited for her diagnosis, so she could understand the process of making a claim. “I’m a living example of the importance of critical illness cover.” Your local FPM will be able to provide more information on protection cover.

Despite serious relapses, when she returned to work Christine says her line manager had changed and she didn’t share about her MS as it hadn’t been impacting her. “I work part-time so I was able to juggle my appointments by switching my days of work rather than have to raise the subject. I didn’t feel it appropriate to ‘come out’ about my MS at work. It’s amazing how easily you can hide symptoms that aren’t visible, with just a smile and a sense of humour!” But the strain of the secrecy was so hard that eventually Christine shared her situation with her line manager, who was patient about the fact that some tasks took longer to complete and allowed flexibility to attend medical appointments, work part time and from home when her symptoms are too much. “Telling people you have MS can be a tricky thing to deal with – I’ve had people cry on me, comment on how well I look (as if my pain can’t be bad because I look okay!) The kindest response I had was from someone who asked me where they should look for more information about MS because they didn’t know much about it,” she says. Christine urges managers to be willing to say they don’t know much about a condition but ask how best to find out more and to appreciate that; “on many occasions their team member will have got through a lot to even make it to work

(emotionally and physically) and that the fact their condition fluctuates is probably more rubbish for them than it will ever be for you as a manager trying to resource-plan around it. “Build trust with your team member – if you want them to be honest about their condition you need to show you are respectful of the information.” Adds Christine of the support she has received from NGSU. “I am truly blessed – I haven’t had to seek NGSU’s help with difficult work situations. However, I have appreciated their patient listening ear, their drive to see disability issues raised and considered appropriately at NBS, and their considerate questions as they look to understand more about my condition. John (not his real name), an Operational Quality Analyst says he has been able to negotiate workplace adjustments such as working from home and flexible working patterns since he was diagnosed with MS in 2007. “Due to the MS being progressive there have been changes which work have been brilliant with. I work in the office and from home with a flexible approach to ensure I can adapt for better or worse days.” He adds that his experience with work has been a positive one overall although he recalls that he has had a couple of managers along the way that were less supportive. And he says: “I have noticed that the wheelchair aids understanding of disability whereas disabled people not in wheelchairs may not have had as positive an experience.”

Things couldn’t seem to get worse after Sarah* (not her real name) received the devastating diagnosis that she had Multiple Sclerosis. But when she came to return to work she faced the first of many struggles when she was told by a business representative that he needed to talk to her to see ‘whether she was worth the trouble and the cost.’ Sarah was a Mortgage Consultant and says she was devastated. But worse was to follow when she was told she could accept demotion to PBM and a 50 per cent pay cut or leave with three months notice. “This news was given to me in a glass fronted office in a branch with people I knew around me. When I left I just sobbed,” she recalls. That’s when Sarah turned to NGSU for help. “I just wish I had done it sooner, the Union has been amazing,” she says. With the Union and her BM support, while she still accepted demotion, Sarah was able to attain the role of MR and avoid a 50 per cent pay cut. She now has the specialist equipment she needs but is concerned that Nationwide policies can be open to interpretation, leading to unsympathetic line managers making harsh interpretations. “It shouldn’t be a lottery,” she says.

New year, new beginnings the view from Middleton Farmhouse

M

y current term of office as General Secretary comes to an end in December and I will begin a new five-year term in January 2017. It has been a privilege to lead the Union over the past 26 years and I feel proud to be trusted to continue in the role for the next 5 years. During this period there have been many changes to the organisation. It is always disappointing when change leads to employees being placed at risk of redundancy and the current change programme is no exception. I am sorry to see so many senior leaders across the Society leave – I have worked closely with many of them over the years and wish them well. It is also disappointing to see the recently announced changes to Commercial division and the further uncertainty this brings to those who have been through the relocation process from Northampton to London in relatively recent times. The Union continues to support all members, collectively through the negotiation of the enhanced redundancy terms and by providing support for individual members impacted by the change. The announcement of the BIG Event at the NEC in Birmingham has led to much comment from members. There is excitement and anticipation about the opportunity for everyone to hear about the future strategy of the Society directly from the senior management team. However, there has also been some concern expressed about the cost and carbon footprint of such an event, particularly as the need to control cost continues to be a priority and when colleagues are losing their jobs. It is important that this investment in time and resource is seen to provide real benefit and sets the Society up to meet the challenges of the future. Over the next few months we will be reviewing the Union’s representative structures to ensure that we are able to reflect the views of members across the new ‘communities’ across Nationwide. We’ll let you know more about this soon but in the meantime, if you have concerns about the current period of change please talk to your local NGSU Rep or call the Union Office – we’re here to help.

Step up for equality Sign the petition on forcing heels at work

W

hen a finance company in London sent home a worker for refusing to wear heels, they unleashed a powerful backlash, which is now demanding Government action. Nicola Thorp arrived at finance company PwC to be told she had to wear shoes with a two to four inch heel but was sent home without pay when she refused and complained male colleagues were not asked to do the same. Ms Thorp said she would have struggled to work a full day in high heels. Simon Pratt, MD at outsourcing firm Portico, said it was common practice within the service sector to have appearance guidelines, which Ms Thorp had agreed to. However, he said the firm had taken on board the comments regarding footwear and would be reviewing its guidelines. The heels stipulation prompted a petition to the government urging ministers to make it illegal for a company to require women to wear high heels at work. The petition now stands at over 151,000 signatures. TUC women’s equality officer, Scarlet Harris, commented: “From a health and safety perspective, heels are bad for feet, joints and back.” Meanwhile TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady says the case; “reeks of sexism”. The TUC has a guide on footwear at work which states unequivocally that dress codes which require women to wear heels are sexist. Unions say ridiculous dress codes imposed by some employers are both sexist and bad for women’s health and agreed a motion on the

The motion from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists (SCP) noted the issue of sexist dress codes had been a long-time concern to unions, with a requirement to wear high heels a particular bugbear. Union delegates agreed the law should be changed to enable people to not be compelled to wear high heels at work. Frances O’Grady said: “We need common sense when it comes to dress codes, not outdated sexist policies. It is ridiculous that so many employers still insist their female staff wear high heels and make-up in 2016. Regularly wearing high heels increases wear and tear on knee joints and can lead to back problems. They should be a choice, not a condition of the job.” NGSU President Nicola Huddlestone says research has long-since pointed to a disparity between the way women perceive their career progression compared to men. A survey carried out by Sellick Partnership in 2016 suggested a lack of confidence among women in pursuing a promotion, regardless of experience and skills. In the survey, 34 per cent of women had actively pursued a promotion throughout their career, compared with 51 per cent of men. “For years, women have struggled to find a balance between family life and work. While increasing flexible and remote working opportunities is helping, the case of Ms. Thorp has reinforced the concern that attitudes to women in the workplace are often still outdated,” she added.

to mothers in the developing world where there is no access to safe drinking water and sterilisation facilities. War on Want was also instrumental in campaigning for workers’ rights on tea plantations, and supported the South African struggle against apartheid. In the 1980s it campaigned on Third World debt and in the 1990s focused on the need to respond to issues raised by globalisation and workers’ rights.

WAR ON WANT War on Want was founded following a letter from Victor Gollancz, a publisher and noted humanitarian to The Guardian in February 1951 asking people to join an international struggle against poverty. The result was the creation of a movement that has been at the forefront of the fight against injustice ever since. Gollancz’s letter to The Guardian called for an end to the Korean War and the creation of an international fund ‘to turn swords into ploughshares’. All those in support were to send a postcard to Gollancz with the simple word ‘yes’. Within a month he had received 10,000 replies and The Association for World Peace was formed. Its plan ‘for the conquest of world hunger’ went on to become War on Want: A Plan for World Development, published on 9 June 1952.

We answer your questions about working terms and conditions at Nationwide… Is it a requirement for branch employees to work five Saturdays in a nine-week period? It was agreed between Nationwide and NGSU that, as a general principle, employees would not be asked to work more than five Saturdays in a nine-week period. This is a maximum and not a set number of Saturdays that must be worked. This principle does not apply to employees who have accepted a role on the basis that Saturdays will be part of their normal working pattern. All employees have the right to submit a Flexible Working request if they would like to change their working pattern. The Society has given a commitment that all requests will have careful consideration. Some employees have received car parking fines at Wakefield House in Swindon – are these legal? Wakefield House is on a privately-owned site and the land owner can impose rules and regulations about parking. If you choose to park on the site you are considered to have entered into a contract and have agreed to the regulations. If you fail to comply with the regulations, for example, parking in an unauthorised area, a fine can be imposed. The rules for the Wakefield House site comply with a trade association Code of Practice. It may be possible to appeal a fine if it’s been

We know it is frustrating but we’d urge everyone to note the parking rules, drive and park carefully and respect all users and security staff. Do I have to ‘pin’ a tracsmart event if I don’t agree with content? If you are asked to ‘pin’ a record of an event or discussion on tracsmart you should be given the opportunity to add your comments. Provided you have had this opportunity and the event is ‘pinned’ by you and your manager at the same time, it is reasonable to comply with the request. It would not be reasonable for your manager to add comments and ‘pin’ the event at a later date without discussing the additional content and allowing you the chance to add further comments.

Some part-time employees (depending on their working pattern) may be required to supplement their Public Holiday Leave from their Annual Leave Entitlement – this ‘deficit’ can be made but from additional hours worked, such as early starts and late finishes

Mrs President We catch up with Nicola Huddlestone at the end of her first year Q Tell us a bit about yourself, how you came to work for Nationwide, join NGSU and become president? A I started at Nationwide in 1987. It was my first job and I am still here nearly 30 years later! I have been a member of the Union since the very beginning but became a Rep about 10 years ago after the Union helped me after I had issues with my terms and condition being altered.I decided that I wanted to support the Union as they had helped me. I then became National Regional Officer for North 3, which meant I became part of the National Executive Committee. With my children now 15 and 17, I had more flexibility with my working so decided it was the right time to put myself forward as a candidate as President. Q How is the presidency going? A I am absolutely loving the role of President. It provides you with such variety of experiences. The role is flexible so can be adapted to your individual strengths and experience. I particularly enjoy the Roadshows at the centres, which enable the Union to recruit new members and speak to our existing members about our services and benefits. I am involved with supporting individuals at disciplinary hearings and grievances

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2017? At our last conference NGSU stated that it wanted to put Reps at the heart of what we do and I feel that great progress has been made with this. I will continue to be involved with equality, diversity and inclusion as I have now been invited to attend the Employee Wellbeing Group. I intend to meet as many Reps as possible at regional council and our members through our roadshows. I will continue to support members on an individual level at hearings, which is such a vital and fundamental part of the service NGSU offers. 2017 is conference year so I would really like to encourage all members to consider the motions that they would like to submit.

and I find this particularly rewarding as it is often a really stressful time for our members. Anything I can do to help make sure that members are fully supported in these circumstances makes it worthwhile. I have also got involved with whole areas such as wellbeing, ED&I, Health & Safety and international matters. Being President has also allowed me to experience unique opportunities, such as achieving a health and safety qualification, work on an Employment Law Diploma and attend the TUC Conference. Q What causes are dear to your heart? A There are certain areas that I am involved in that I really feel are at the heart of the Union. Representing our members clearly is a fundamental part of the Union and this is key to what we do, and remains at the heart of our organisation. Wellbeing and ED&I can be linked. I feel that equality takes many forms. Equality for women, in age, disability and LGBT are all vital to our members. I want to make sure that members are treated fairly and equality for all ensures that fair treatment at work is an automatic consequence of this. We are affiliated to War on Want (see page 11), Justice for Columbia and Amnesty at NGSU. As President I took on the responsibility to report on these organisations to the NEC. The admiration that I have for often persecuted vulnerable groups that these organisation represent is enormous. I would urge everyone to go online or read in Rapport about the reports of the work that goes on to support the most vulnerable in the world.

The offer, urges the TUC, must feel compelling and value for money. Congress also discussed appropriate footwear in the workplace (see our story on page 10). There was also discussion around tax relief on pension contributions with successful calls to oppose any Government initiatives that will further harm the financial services sector and put the jobs of thousands of union members across the country at risk. It was also agreed to oppose any attempt by the Government to address budgetary constraints by cutting pensions tax relief. A wealth of activities took place during the evenings and lunch breaks with Michelle and Nicola attending the Institute of Employment Rights/ Campaign for Trade Union Freedom, A Manifesto for Labour Law, which discussed how the world of work has changed and how the laws governing our workplaces need to change too. Nicola also attended the Justice for Colombia meeting – an organisation to which NGSU is affiliated. The event considered how to build peace in Columbia following a groundbreaking peace initiative after nearly 60 years of conflict. Nicola said: “The devastation that nearly 60 years of war has ravaged on this country and the injustice that workers fighting for their rights where many have been tortured and murdered is beyond comprehension”.

obs, respect, services and strong unions were the core elements of this year’s TUC Conference in Brighton attended by a three-strong NGSU delegation. The delegation was made up of Tim Poil, General Secretary, Nicola Huddlestone, President and Michelle Pickering, National Executive Officer. Michelle commented: “One of my over-riding thoughts was how lucky we are in terms of the management and formation of our union, having the opportunity to see the TUC at work, it really brought it home to me. Another interesting aspect was hearing the range of issues being raised by other unions and also the need to involve the TUC in their negotiations.” Congress this year included 84 motions on a vast range of issues, among them calls to campaign for young workers, who would most benefit from being in a union. Britain’s young workers are a group of 3.5 million women and men, all working either full or part-time and earning less than £10.26 per hour. Nearly 87 per cent of these are in the private sector where they can experience low pay, lowskilled, low-quality jobs, lack of training opportunities, over-qualification for the jobs available, bullying and harassment, including sexual harassment. The TUC says unions should decide how they get into those workplaces where Britain’s young core workers are, with an offer designed to appeal to them.
