Cameras installed on East Quad JEWELL PORTER News Editor Something’s different about East Quad. Late last week, the administration had cameras installed surrounding some of the residential buildings, such as behind Shepardson Hall and in front of Sawyer Hall. Director of Safety, Security and Risk Management Garret Moore said, “There was a formal request for funding for cameras on the exterior main residential quads several years ago. There became a greater need after several unusual incidents, such as the Beaver Hall Arson by the Wingless Angels and other serious violations.” Some students have expressed concern that these cameras will infringe upon privacy rights of students. Moore said that this is not the purpose of the cameras as they will only be outside of residence halls. In addition, he said, “the cameras will likely not be monitored but reviewed when we have a report of a violation that might help with an investigation. He said that the purpose of the cameras will only be used to investigate “serious violations.” This would include crimes like pulling the fire alarm, arson and physical assault. Moore said the purpose of the cameras is not to

get students in trouble for activities like drinking. “We’re not concerned with things like that,” he said. Members of the Security Committee said they were not involved in the deciding if and when cameras would be installed. Moore said, “this was decided before the Security Committee had been convened.” The decision was, instead, made solely by the administration. Students are concerned with

the fact that the administration began putting up cameras without even telling the students. Tempestt Battle ’15 from Orange, New Jersey, said, “it seems inconsiderate to not address the student body about the cameras.” Moore said that they were planning to wait until after spring break, when the installation of the cameras will be complete, to tell the student body. “The process seems sketchy to

me,” said Imani Abernathy ’16 from Chicago, Illinois. The administration plans to also put cameras up on West Quad, but not North Quad, South quad and around the senior apartments. Abernathy said, “it doesn’t make sense to only put them on east and west quad if they are going to install them.” The cameras will be up-andrunning when students arrive on campus after spring break.

The Denisonian has received documents alleging that Denison “is not providing equal opportunities for female college students to play sports” under Title IX requirements. A complaint filed with the Cleveland Office of Civil Rights said that there was a “participation gap” between the percentage of women on campus and their participation in Division III sports. These documents were sent to The Denisonian from an email account attributed to Mark Rossmiller, who has filed similar complaints against Texas and South Carolina high schools, according to The Columbian and . The complainant, whose name was excluded from the document, cited statistics from the Equity in Athletics Data Analysis, which showed that in 2011, 2012 and 2013, the college had a 14 percent, 16.10 percent and 15.71 percent female participation gap, respectively. The complainant alleges that if Denison did provide women with equal athletic opportunities, there would be “an addiSee DCGA, page 3

Kal Penn said during his speech, “I didn’t have a traditional path.” He then went on to explain how his career path transformed.

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) at Denison is currently in the process of implementing a By-Law sanctioned Standards Board composed of fraternity men to ensure the fair representation of its organizations during allegations of misconduct. While the proposal is still awaiting full administrative approval, significant progress has been made in determining the board’s ideal roles and membership characteristics. The Standards Board, through its intricate involvement in the conduct review process, hopes to have three main functions within the Denison Greek com-

munity. First, the Board would represent the interests of students regarding fraternity life by creating an unbiased jury of their peers to assess charges of conduct violations. Second, this institution would facilitate better cooperation between Greeks and the administration in all interactions. Finally, the Board would afford IFC the accountability to legitimize its actions when providing recommendations for the handling of misconduct investigations. IFC believes that the realization of these functions will allow a harmonious environment to flourish where Greeks can have a significant student voice in See IFC, page 3
