Brief

Concept

To design a series of t-shirts for the band More The main driving concept behind the designs was Than You’ll Ever Know to accompany the release the use of, or merging together of one or more of their new EP and the start of their new UK tour. of three separate elements: self-created type, geometric shapes and patterns and large scale photo imagery.

Delivery Within this brief there has been the opportunity to experiment with a number of different methods of printing onto fabric, and I have been able to use 5 of these, which include:

Foil blocking. Involved screen printing with a unique quick-drying resin glue. Once dry the shirt is heat pressed at 150 degrees with a sheet of foil over the top.

Ink-based screen printing. Utilising the complexity of constellations and nebulae as a back drop, screen printing such an area of varying tones proved difficult. The solution was creating a half-tone effect in order to achieve the necessary depth when printing.

Flocking. Involved the same process as foil blocking, but a sheet of flock is heat pressed instead of a sheet of foil. Flock is a sheet of compress fibres which when heat pressed leaves a thick fuzzy texture.

Delivery & Range As a process, from start to finish screen printing can be a long and laborious process. Due to this a design involving many colours or shades must be analysed in order to effectively print, as only a single colour at a time can be printed. Because of this, for one of my more complicated designs I opted to have it digitally printed onto the shirt to retain the complexity and colour interactions of the design.

The final process was a raised puff binder, which after drying needs ironing to achieve a similar effect to flocking without the need for a heat press or flock. Colours can be achieved by mixing inks into the binder.

Range Along with the hand screen printed t-shirts and the various processes are digitally printed fabric tags which are then hand sewn onto the bottom of the shirt featuring the identity of MTYEK.

The designs are also spread across a number of other media including promotional leaflets and fliers publicising both the band and it’s myspace page, and the brand and its online shop.

Range & Context Each shirt comes with a set of branded swing tags which are printed with a QR code that navigates the customer to a number of different sites including the bands video online, the online shop, special freebies such as acoustic covers or free downloads from the band and the chance to win tickets to shows. This adds a unique factor to each individual purchase and provides a little something extra for the customer.

Due to the nature of the online ordering service, shirts packaged in special packaging would get damaged, so within the delivery envelope the shirt will be packaged in special tissue paper finished with a vinyl logo sticker.
