AFD works with Wall-E, Eve robots to combat fire danger %\ %UHWW 'RQRKRH #%UHWW'RQRKRH

Two robots, Wall-E and Eve, are helping the Austin Fire Department incorporate technology into firefighting so that they can ultimately assess situations in advance of their human firefighting counterparts.

The two robots are microtechnical ground robots the department obtained from the federal Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office. Wall-E and Eve, named

after the Pixar movie and both optimized for use in tunnels, communicate with each other while exploring their surroundings, AFD Lt. Lyzz Donelson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we send our robots down into these tunnels, or perhaps a confined space or a building collapse, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possible that we could use these robots to push in further than a firefighter could,â&#x20AC;? Donelson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We can use the cameras on these robots to glean information from the surroundings.â&#x20AC;?

The firefighters started training with the robots by making them do simple tasks, such as moving back and forth. Now, the firefighters can make the robots find mannequins, retrieve pipes from them and place those pipes into buckets.

Most officers havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t had trouble operating the robots, Donelson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The controllers are relatively intuitive,â&#x20AC;? Donelson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For some of our team members who have a lot of experience playing video

Fenves: UTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new president will focus on research, affordability %\ -RVK :LOOLV #MRVKZLOOLV

As President William Powers Jr. prepares to step down, UTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next president, Gregory Fenves, said his goals for the University center around addressing persistent issues, such as increasing access to research opportunities and engaging in more productive dialogue with the UT System Board of Regents.

In an interview with The Daily Texan, Fenves, executive vice president and provost, also said he hopes to explore issues of accessbility and affordability, closely echoing his predecessor.

Fenves said his initial goal will be to manage the cost of education, an issue Powers, UT System Chancellor William McRaven and previous chancellors and regents have acknowledged. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the most important issue thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s facing the University is, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;How do we provide high quality education at a reasonable cost?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Fenves said.

In an interview with The Daily Texan in April, Powers said the solution to affordability is not clear-cut. He said he was sure that future administrations would continue to grapple with the issue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no single bullet,â&#x20AC;?

Powers said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just always keep trying [to operate the University] as efficiently and as high quality as you can.â&#x20AC;?

Fenves said one of his educational goals is to connect undergraduate and graduate students to campus research opportunities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What I feel is the most important theme for education at the University of Texas is how we link our undergraduate education mission with our research mission,â&#x20AC;?

experiences as dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering and as provost have helped him form relationships with the regents and UT administrators. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can work with almost anybody, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had good working relationships with members of the board,â&#x20AC;?

Fenves said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In my current role as provost, and my previous role as dean, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had a lot of interaction with them through the presidential search process and the selection process.â&#x20AC;?

One challenge preparing for the presidency poses is that issues and opportunities for change often remain unseen until one actually takes the position, according to former UT President Larry Faulkner. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think any president should come in with a

firm idea of what all [his or her] goals are,â&#x20AC;? Faulkner said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think that you know enough until youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in the job, what is really ripe, what are the best opportunities for the institution, and in fact, opportunities will appear while youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re serving.â&#x20AC;?

Faulkner said he would advise Fenves to take steps to learn more about the University but said Fenves is positioned differently than he was when he first came into the job. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I came in, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know the people, [and] I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know the intricate issues facing the institution, and I had to learn about those,â&#x20AC;? Faulkner said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Greg Fenves has been here for years now, and so he is more prepared on that scene than I was.â&#x20AC;?

While the department continues to research situations in which robots could be useful, Gilbert Rodriguez, electrical engineering senior and member of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, said one important factor to consider is that robots can operate in different environments than most human beings. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I could see a huge benefit from firefighters using autonomous robots since it makes it safer for them to operate in disaster areas,â&#x20AC;? Rodriguez said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It also brings forth huge design challenges because the robots need to operate in extreme conditions, such as the heat of a fire.â&#x20AC;?

Donelson said one possibility for robot development is giving them the ability to tell those who are trapped that help is on the way.

The Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas at Austin, a separate building that is part of the program, will follow with their own opening in 2017.

Currently, construction is well underway, with cranes towering over the fu-

Orientation provides tools for student success At a university as large as the University of Texas at Austin, there are a lot of areas in need of improvement. A lot of these improvements can be made as soon as the university chooses to make them. This summer, as the university seeks to improve upon campus life with restructured summer orientation, we are glad they feel the same way.

When older classes entered the university, summer orientation felt like a series of chores and rushed meetings that left little opportunity to connect with campus or other students. But, this summer, the university will mandate only two wing meetings, instead of five, along with several small-group meetings, which Joey Williams, communications coordinator for the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, said has a positive impact on student success and retention.

The university has also transferred less exciting lectures, like the Bevonomics personal finance program, to an electronic medium.

These shifts will make orientation a more engaging experience without detracting from student learning.

While the number of courses offered at orientation will be roughly the same, there will be fewer required, which will create more time for students to connect with campus and each other.

The emphasis on community, in conjunction with other programs, allows for more free time and sends the message that safety and respect are integral parts of campus culture from the freshman classâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; first day.

and community-building at orientation.

This inclusion sends a direct message about what will and will not be tolerated in our community.

With a new education program, a greater emphasis on safety and a fresh orientation schedule, we believe that this orientation will create the greatest opportunity for students to have the resources and training necessary to reach their fullest potential as students and members of our campus community.

Bevo, the longhorn mascot of Texas since 1916, rests on the sidelines as a centuryold icon of UT pride.

Students engage in these exciting traditions together in seating groups throughout the stadium. The groups are a great opportunity for freshmen to come together with members of their dorm, academic organizations and social groups, while in the midst of the other 100,000 fans the stadium can hold.

Lawmaker, Students, UT Officials clash in â&#x20AC;&#x153;campus carryâ&#x20AC;? debate %\ (OHDQRU 'HDUPDQ %\ (OHDQRU 'HDUPDQ #HOO\GHDUPDQ #HOO\GHDUPDQ

Lawmakers are in a standoff over â&#x20AC;&#x153;campus carry,â&#x20AC;? a measure that would allow students to bring handguns on University grounds and in buildings.

In January, Sen. Brian Birdwell (R-Granbury) and Rep. Allen Fletcher (RCypress) proposed identical bills, Senate Bill 11 and House Bill 937, proposing the concealed carry of handguns on university campuses.

With the regular legislative session ending June 1, time is running out for lawmakers to pass the measure.

If campus carry passes, Students with CHL licenses could bring their guns on campus, with the exception of certain facilities, including on-campus k-12 schools, hospitals and residence halls.

Private and independent institutions may opt out of the measure, but public universities may not.

Campus carry has the support of many lawmakers. SB 11 has 19 authors. HB 937 has 56 authors. Proponents of campus carry believe the policy will create a safer

campus environment and expand second amendment rights for licensed handgun carriers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;College and university campuses are not crime free zonesâ&#x20AC;Ś.â&#x20AC;? Rep. Allen Fletcher (R-Cypress), primary author of HB 937, said at a hearing in March. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The idea that this bill will result in any increase in violence is unfounded.â&#x20AC;?

UT students, faculty and staff members have been vocal about their opposition to the policy. During the spring, Student Government voted to oppose campus carry.

Representatives from SG, other students and professors have attended hearings at the Capitol and held rallies on campus to voice their concerns with the measure. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All of these people are against concealed carry on campus, and we ask why this decision is being made here in this room instead of at the institutions themselves, when weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re the ones being affected by this,â&#x20AC;? Student Government Vice President Rohit Mandalapu said at the same hearing in March.

Campus carry is estimated to cost the UT system $39 million, although UT Austin did not estimate any costs associated with the policy.

Thus far, the only the Senate has passed a campus carry measureâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the Houseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s died when it was not heard before a May deadline. The House may still consider SB 11 this session.

Campus carry could also receive passage House Bill 910, which would allow the open carry of handguns with a belt or shoulder holster.

The bill may have a campus carry amendment added on the Senate floor, according to multiple reports. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There seems to be some concern that these bills will be combined,â&#x20AC;? Sen. Craig Estes said at a Senate State Affairs hearing for HB 910 on May 18. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not saying they will or they wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.â&#x20AC;?

As of press time, a final decision on the implementation of campus carry has not been made.

Ask any first-year student at the University and they are likely to say that one of the worst parts of college is registration. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bloodbath, with Hunger Games references being widely used in the months of November and April.

To help mitigate some of the pain of registration, all students should go get advised.

No one knows everything about UT, but academic advisers probably know the most. Take advantage of their knowledge and patience by making a point to see them at least twice a semester. The following list is made for students who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how to go about schedule advising or even what to do once they are being advised. +RZ WR VFKHGXOH DQ DS SRLQWPHQW" Every student gets a UT EID that gives them access to everything Texas: grades, tuition payments, football tickets, etc. For many colleges, advising appointments can be scheduled online using oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s UT EID. A lot of kids dream of making the pros and getting paid to do what they love.

For most, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just that â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a dream. But for the eight Texas womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s golf team members, this dream of making the big leagues and playing in the LPGA Tour is close to reality. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All have the ability to make the LPGA,â&#x20AC;? head coach Ryan Murphy said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a question of if thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what you want to do with your life.â&#x20AC;?

Murphyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s statement is twofold: itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an endorsement of his playersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; abilities and also a recognition of the difficulties of earning and keeping an LPGA Tour card.

There are three qualifying stages to earning the tour card. About 300 women begin the process with Stage I of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament. The top 100 players and ties from the first stage move onto the second tournament. From the second, the top 80 and ties advance to the third and final stage, which is a 90-hole tournament over five days, after which the top 20 finishers receive LPGA memberships. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Love and passion for the game is necessary to be a professional,â&#x20AC;? Murphy said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have inherited a group of young women who work hard and are capable.â&#x20AC;?

These players all have aspirations of becoming the next member of the tour, but each at her own pace.

As a senior, Strauss hopes to finish this season, graduate and pursue the tour this fall.

Abe will graduate in December, play through her college eligibility and then move to achieve LPGA membership.

As for Beck, she will make the journey to the tour once her game reaches a point where she believes she can contend among the best.

Texas Quidditch takes flight, no wand required

Four takeaways from spring football

When you watch your first Quidditch game, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see a field full of players on brooms trying to catch the golden snitch â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and it will be hard to separate the sport from what you know about â&#x20AC;&#x153;Harry Potter.â&#x20AC;?

While many of the players on the Texas Quidditch teams initially joined because of their love of J.K. Rowlingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s series, they quickly realized the sport was more than just a fan club.

Since the group formed in 2010, Quidditch at UT has become highly competitive. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Quidditch is not just so popular nationally. â&#x20AC;Ś Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s becoming a global sport,â&#x20AC;? physics senior Audrey Wright said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Almost every major city I go to, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a Quidditch community there, and they know of Texas Quidditch.â&#x20AC;?

The sport, which got its start in 2005 and is governed by the International Quidditch Association, has more than 300 teams with more than 4,000 athletes nationwide.

Although a love for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Harry Potterâ&#x20AC;? is what attracts many players to the sport, the players said the sport exists entirely separately from the books and is, by itself, fairly grueling. As with any other club sport, the team trains regularly and competes in national competitions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think it would be much more than some other â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Harry Potterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fans hanging out,â&#x20AC;? Wright said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was just something totally not what I expected. It was so athletic and so cool and so unlike any other sport that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d heard of. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Harry Potterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is what

brought me in, I suppose, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s definitely not what kept me in Quidditch.â&#x20AC;?

Texas itself has six different Quidditch teams: two traveling teams â&#x20AC;&#x201D; varsity Texas Quidditch and Austin Quidditch â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and four house teams that compete only with each other for the House Cup

The four house teams compete just once a month under Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor and Hufflepuff banners.

Although the on-campus teams adopt both the names of the Hogwarts houses and the basic gameplay from the books, players forget about the sportsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; origins on the field. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The connection of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Harry Potterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and Quidditch is really just so severed,â&#x20AC;? Wright said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not even there. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see someone in a black cloak at the World Cup, â&#x20AC;Ś and it takes you a second [to remember].â&#x20AC;?

The sport even draws nonâ&#x20AC;&#x153;Harry Potterâ&#x20AC;? fans who are simply interested in exercise and want to meet new people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My old coach from the Slytherin dynasty â&#x20AC;&#x201D; he has never read the books,â&#x20AC;? chemical engineering junior Ryan Davis said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know

As other Texas teams are fumbling, Texas Quidditch has shined, gaining national attention for its success. The varsity Texas Quidditch team recently won its thirdconsecutive World Cup championship with a 120â&#x20AC;&#x201C;90 victory against Lone Star Quidditch in Rock Hill, South Carolina. â&#x20AC;&#x153;World Cup 8 competition was so fierce,â&#x20AC;? Wright said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Our final game] was the most fun, the most stressful, the most competitive and probably the fiercest competition Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever felt.â&#x20AC;?

The more aggressive competition at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s World Cup, known as World Cup 8, demonstrates the sportâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth overall â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but also shows the UT players have been able to adapt and thrive. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Going from World Cups 6, 7 and 8, it really shows how much overall Quidditch has become so much more competitive,â&#x20AC;? Wright said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And it really speaks so much louder for UT that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been able to stay on top through all these changes.â&#x20AC;?

The line was consistently overpowered by opposing defensive lines and suffered from injuries, dismissals and a major lack of experience.

With spring practices in the books, Strong has seen improvement. The unit looked comfortable and performed well during practices and the Orange-White scrimmage.

Business senior Samuel Garcia had an idea. What he needed was goats.

Garcia, who is from the Rio Grande Valley, wanted to help families living in colonias â&#x20AC;&#x201D; communities along the border that often lack basic living necessities, such as potable water. To help improve familiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; living conditions, Garcia launched the Sustainable Dairy Goat Initiative, a business plan that he hoped would allow people to make a profit from donated dairy goats.

The University awarded the Initiative with the University Unionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Palâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Make A Difference Award, an annual honor given to a student who significantly impacts lives either on campus or in the broader community, last week.

Garcia said he was driven to found the initiative out of a desire to help families in the colonias the ability to send their children. As a native of the Valley, Garcia said he directly witnessed first-hand what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like to be without a source of stable income. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[People living in colonias] are genuine, hard-working, good people â&#x20AC;&#x201D; thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why I wanted to help them,â&#x20AC;? Garcia said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have a lot of friends from colonias who had the same dreams and wants that we did. They

His initiative, which began in January, uses money donated by students and sponsors to provide three goats and supplies to each family in need. Once families in the colonias have a combined 30 to 40 goats, they will form a dairy cooperative, which Garcia said he hopes will help give them a stable income through milk and cheese sales.

So far, the Initiative has raised about $3,000, and two families in farming-based colonias have been provided goats, with seven more families planning to receive goats this summer, according to Garcia.

The group is preparing to make their organization into a full nonprofit and hopes to gain support from interested investors, according to Tom Jackson, an Initiative mem-

When liberal arts sophomore Madi Maino, originally from Virginia, prepared to move to Texas for college, her image of the state boiled down to one thing: a cowboy wearing boots and a hat. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I came down here, I remember driving and seeing cowboys working on the side of the road â&#x20AC;&#x201D; working on fences or something,â&#x20AC;? Maino said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were wearing stereotypical boots, jeans, a big belt buckle and a cowboy hat.â&#x20AC;?

The House Culture, Recreation and Tourism Committee heard a resolution in April that, if passed,

would further confirm Mainoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s initial impression. Several representatives, led by author Rep. Marsha Farney (R-Georgetown), proposed a resolution that would make the cowboy hat Texasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s official headgear. The bill was left pending in committee.

Farney, who did not attend the hearing, wrote in the resolution that the cowboy hat is a â&#x20AC;&#x153;stylishâ&#x20AC;? representation of Texasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; history, worthy of its own recognition by the 84th legislature. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The cowboy hat is recognized all over the world as a symbol of the Texas Western heritage,â&#x20AC;? said Rep. Although there are a number of directors who didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t attend college, such as Quentin Tarantino and Stanley Kubrick, not all aspiring movie makers can simply pick up a camera and make it big.

As competition to write, direct and produce movies becomes more and more competitive, film schools across the country urge their students to gain real-world experience.

Film students hunt for internships to gain practical experience in the field. When they perform various tasks, such as editing footage or handling equipment, students see how filmmakers handle pre-production and post-production work.

Radio-television-film senior Lucas Doyle reads scripts, delivers packages and runs errands for his internship with production studio Arts + Labor. He said itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crucial to work closely with people in the industry because they help guide students through the doâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ts of filmmaking. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can work on your own stuff as much as possible or be on set as much as possible, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always helpful to see how professionals do it,â&#x20AC;? Doyle said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to know whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ahead of you.â&#x20AC;?

Anne Lewis, a senior radio-television-film lecturer and documen-

tary filmmaker, said she learned to edit mainly by watching other editors work. She advised students to look into organizations, such as the Austin Film Society, that help students make useful industry contacts.

She said students should apply for UTLA â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a program in which students spend a semester attending classes in Los Angeles and interning for a number of production companies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Getting out in the field from the very beginning is very valuable for students,â&#x20AC;? Lewis said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exposure to how things actually function in the real world.â&#x20AC;?

Radio-television-film senior Kelsey Duncan works as an assistant editor and production assistant at independent film production company Alpheus Media. She said her internship helped her learn editing software and make useful contacts with potential employers.

She also said internships help film students who are not as technically skilled at using cameras or editing footage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are a lot of people who come into college with experience,â&#x20AC;?

Duncan said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are people who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have internships, but they know more than I could ever think about cameras and directing. For me, [interning] was a really

great choice, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m glad I did it.â&#x20AC;?

Lewis said working for bigger companies doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily guarantee learning everything there is to know about film. She said large production companies look appealing and help students gain useful contacts, but independent studios offer students the freedom to learn skills in various aspects of film, such as editing and cinematography. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are advantages to working for a small company,â&#x20AC;? Lewis said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You probably get to do more than working for a large company, where you would be confined to one area.â&#x20AC;?

Doyle said he appreciates working at Arts + Labor and feels heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s receiving training for what he hopes to do for the rest of his career. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nice to see whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actually going to be expected once you graduate and the dayto-day routine for the position I want,â&#x20AC;? Getting stung by a bee was the best thing that ever happened to 10-year-old entrepreneur Mikaila Ulmer.

founder, owner and CEO of BeeSweet Lemonade, an Austin-based, family-run lemonade company that donates 20 percent of its proceeds to organizations who help save honeybees. The companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motto is â&#x20AC;&#x153;Buy a bottle, save the bees!â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;It makes me feel very special that I own my own business, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m only 10,â&#x20AC;? Mikaila said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I get to go to really fun, fancy events, and I get to stay up late at them.â&#x20AC;?

When bees stung her twice in one week six years ago, Mikaila said she began researching bees to gain a better understanding of how they work. That same week, Mikaila started experimenting with her great-grandmother Helenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1940s flaxseed lemonade recipe in preparation for Acton Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Business Fair, an event in which kids are encouraged to launch their own startups by running a booth to sell a product they created.

Mikaila said her newfound passion for helping honeybees drove her to tweak her grandmoth-

erâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recipe to use locally sourced honey as a sweetener.

Lemonade sales were good, so Mikaila continued to sell her drinks at youth entrepreneurial events until the owner of East Side Pies, an Austin-based pizza company, suggested she bottle it. Mikaila agreed and moved the lemonade production from her familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kitchen to a small commercial kitchen.

Today, BeeSweet Lemonade sells 12-ounce bottles of freshly squeezed lemonade with flavors such as original mint, ginger, prickly pear and iced tea. They can be found in Whole Foods Market and several small businesses around Austin, including East Side Pies and Wheatsville Co-op.

Mikailaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother, Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Andra Ulmer, deals with the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s marketing. Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Andra said the business belongs to Mikaila and that her role is mostly supportive. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s her business,â&#x20AC;? Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Andra said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It really is. She started it in kindergarten, and she worked hard, and now that [the lemonade] is sold at Whole Foods, it wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be fair to take her business away from her.â&#x20AC;?

Journalism senior Mikayla Martinez began her internship at BeeSweet two years ago, acting as Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Andraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right hand. Martinezâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s involvement ranges from writing public relations pieces to testing new flavors. She said everything she does â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and everything anyone does â&#x20AC;&#x201D; must first be approved by Mikaila. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Andra has always emphasized that

[every thing] has to come from Mikaila,â&#x20AC;? Martinez said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mikaila has to have a say in everything.â&#x20AC;?

Mikailaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main duties range from holding workshops on how to save honeybees to coming up with new flavors. Mikaila said she usually deals with BeeSweet-related work after school, but her mind is always on the clock. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I made up the prickly pear [flavor] while I was at school doing my math homework,â&#x20AC;?

Mikaila said.

Last month, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shark Tank,â&#x20AC;? a reality show on which entrepreneurs present business ideas to a group of judges who decide whether they want to invest, featured BeeSweet Lemonade. Daymond John, one of the showâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s judges, agreed to invest $60,000 in BeeSweet for a 25 percent stake in the company. Mikaila accepted his offer.

Mikaila said she has high hopes for the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future. She said she looks forward to continuing to be the owner of BeeSweet, expanding the company into the snack realm with cupcakes and starting a clothing and home goods line. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want a BeeSweet Lemonade line, like the Hello Kitty line,â&#x20AC;? Mikaila said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want BeeSweet everything.â&#x20AC;?
