TO THE CLASS OF 2025

It’s been just about 10 semesters since I first got hired at the Reveille, and it’s finally time to move on from this truly standout college news publication.

I started at the Reveille on the digital desk without any experience writing or working with social media. But it’s with those inexperienced people the Reveille’s teaching ability really shines through. The digital editor at the time was Jayden Nguyen, and among her countless other great qualities, she was a fantastic teacher.

I think our publication is at its best when we’re taking people with a drive to tell good stories and produce good work and then giving them the experience and coaching necessary to help them realize that ambition. Nguyen did that for me. She taught me everything I know about headlines, search engine optimization and how to write snappy captions.

So I cut my teeth on the digital desk, writing social media captions and sending push notifications. It wasn’t glamorous work, but I enjoyed it mostly because of the people in my section. I keep in touch with most of that section, Nguyen included, to this day, and I don’t think I would have stuck with the Reveille like I did if I hadn’t enjoyed the company so much.

But when the semester ended and upper management made a call for anyone interested in summer staff, I decided to try some different work. I applied to be a news reporter. I was studying journalism and wanted to be a reporter in the future, so obviously I needed to do some news work for a while.

I loved it. I had a man named John Buzbee as my news editor, and like Nguyen, I learned more than I can say from him. He pushed me to pursue stories that I didn’t trust myself enough to cover, and he offered an endless stream of guidance on how to tangibly improve my reporting and writing. It’s a common theme of my time with the Reveille: Good editors make great reporters.

After my summer of news, I took on my first managerial role as the opinion editor. It was here that I sought to put everything I saw and absorbed from Nguyen and Buzbee into action. I wanted to be a great editor, and I wanted my section to feel a real sense of community.

I approached all of their column ideas with sincerity and care, and when editing, I never made a change that I didn’t explain thoroughly. I wanted every single columnist to feel like they had a personal editor, whose only job was to put maximum effort into their stories.

You’d have to ask them whether or not my approach worked, but on a speculative level, I feel like I did a good job.

After a year of opinion editing, I made the big decision to apply for editor in chief. Phrasing it that succinctly makes it sound like an easy, even obvious, choice, but I struggled with it. I didn’t think I had the chops, and I feared doing a worse job than Claire Sullivan, the editor before me, whom I’d worked with for a year at that point and severely admired.

But again, I was encouraged by the people who came before me. Sullivan believed that I’d be a good fit and was happy with my work as ops editor, so I trusted her judgment more than mine and applied.

I got the job, and with Buzbee as my managing editor, I started my proudest stretch of time at the Reveille. As editor in chief, I got to see a new crop of editors and reporters hit their stride right in front of my eyes. I had people who told me they were second-guessing their capability, and I can say confidently that all of them grew into great, talented editors.

That’s been the biggest joy of all this. I’ve tried to cultivate a very open, friendly community in the newsroom, and I’m proud to say that I’m leaving behind a Reveille that is competent, open and willing to do whatever it takes to continue the Reveille’s legacy of excellent coverage.

SENIOR WISDOM

What did you expect before coming to LSU?

“Before coming to LSU, I knew that I would have an outstanding college band experience, and I certainly did. I didn’t plan on joining the honors college or pursuing history research, but doing so has truly changed my life.”

“Before coming to LSU, I didn’t know what to expect. Coming here meant leaving everything behind. I was moving in with random roommates from across the country, and my decision to attend LSU was almost completely random — I just knew I wanted a big school where I could meet new people and experience a different culture. While I craved change, it didn’t take away from the fact that all the change was overwhelming. So many possibilities ran through my head about how things could go. If you’re an outof-state student coming from a tight-knit community, you understand the fear. However, as stereotypical as it sounds, it ended up being the best decision of my life. I became a whole new person here - not because college was easy, but because I experienced literally everything. Of course, my best memories were made, but some of my lowest moments happened in college too. That’s what it’s about: learning how to pick yourself back up, growing, and finding a community to support you through the highs and lows. You learn so much about people - and even more about yourself.”

“Before coming to LSU, I wasn’t sure what to expect other than knowing it would be a big campus and that I looked forward to meeting new friends.”

“Before coming to LSU, I expected a culture shock, but in a good way. Since I’m from Alabama, I knew the difference in culture would be something to look forward to, and it didn’t disappoint.”

“I honestly had no idea what to expect. I’m from Pennsylvania and had literally never been to Louisiana before but I just decided after one visit it was the right choice and I’m so glad I did because it was.”

Puleo

How LSU has changed you or helped you to grow?

“I think LSU has made me really open up to the world. Being from a small town, I think spending the last four years meeting people from all over the world with a million different goals and passions has been one of the most fulfilling parts of being here. I’ve accomplished things while at LSU that I couldn’t have even imagined 4 years ago.”

“LSU has helped me grow tremendously. One group that contributed to my personal growth and confidence was Future Ex Youth (FXY), a club that supports artists and creative minds of all types. This year, I met so many hardworking individuals through the club — beautiful souls who inspired me to start the FXY Dance Project with my partner, Rory. I could not have done it without being surrounded by such forward-thinking, creative people. Especially being an out-of-state student, it can be hard to put yourself out there, but FXY at LSU encouraged my creative vision and pushed me to step out of my comfort zone. They supported me every step of the way, helping to make my project a success. FXY significantly helped me grow not just in confidence, but in physical skills, choreography, and project management. It’s a group that will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Violet Micaila

“LSU has helped me grow by pushing me academically, strengthening my independence, allowing me to build lasting friendships and helping me discover who I am and what I value.”

“LSU has helped me a lot because I’ve been able to get real leadership experience at a media nonprofit like KLSU for the past year. I’ve learned a lot of valuable lessons you just can’t teach in a classroom.”

Williams

“LSU has helped me grow in ways I never knew I could. Coming here from California was one of the biggest changes, but also opened my eyes to so many different people, cultures, and ideas that I would have never considered before coming here. I love LSU!”

Arianna Spathopoulos

“LSU has challenged me to be a better historian, researcher and scholar. I’m so grateful for my incredible faculty mentors, friends, and Tiger Band family who have encouraged me to chase my dreams and supported me every step of the way!”

Ann Crabtree

Whta is your favorite memory at LSU?

“My favorite memory of being at LSU was the experiences that Tiger TV gave me. I got to cover multiple events including the 2023 Heisman Trophy Ceremony, the Paris Olympics and a ton of other sporting events. I really enjoyed the camaraderie and friendship that sports brings out in people.”

Louis De Vita

“My favorite memory is probably Mardi Gras. Me and my roommates have gone to NOLA all four years which I’m so grateful for, but last year was extra fun because my best friend from highschool and my brother came to visit which was soo fun. I love showing people from home around because it’s such a cool state.”

Anna Puleo

“Game days with my friends, without a doubt! From the anticipation building all week, to our early morning Chick-fil-A runs, getting ready together and finally ending the night singing along to ‘Callin’ Baton Rouge’ — it’s an experience I’ll never forget. I’m so grateful I had the best people around me to make those moments even more special.”

Skyllar Merrick

“One of my favorite memories from my time at LSU is the cherished mornings when my friends and I would get together in my room to get ready for game-days. We’d start with breakfast or coffee, then spend time together preparing for the day ahead. This simple routine every game-day, filled with laughter and warmth, are moments I’ll carry with me forever.”

Hadeel Mustafa

“My favorite memory from my time at LSU has to be the Homecoming 2024. It seemed like the game dragged on forever, but we won at the end, and everyone stormed the field. It was so much fun!”

Morgan Causey

“I have so many favorite memories here at LSU, but one that definitely will stay with me forever was my sophomore year family weekend. My mom spent the whole weekend with me going to the tailgates, the game and all the bars all together with my friends.”
