10 forcible sex offenses reported last year BY QUINT FORGEY qforgey@lsureveille.com

Ten forcible sex offenses were reported on campus in 2013, according to LSUPD’s Annual Security and Fire Report. The number increased from two incidents in 2011 and three incidents in 2012. The 2014 Annual Security and Fire Report is mandated by the Campus Security Act, also known as the Clery Act, which requires colleges and universities to produce an annual report by Oct. 1 detailing crime and security data for the past three years. University Women’s Center director Summer Steib was dismayed to see yet another case of the underreporting of sexual assault on college campuses. Steib said one in four to one in five women will be sexually assaulted by the time they graduate college. “Ten is obviously a very low number,” Steib said. “It is still really statistically impossible

University student focuses creativity on drag outfits BY MICHAEL TARVER mtarver@lsureveille.com Trying to find relevant and stylish clothing that will remain distinctive and memorable is challenging and often timeconsuming. Shopping for both men and women’s clothes is even
more difficult. Drag queens have the strenuous task of not only filling their casual wardrobes but also their drag wardrobes, which means being active in two realms of fashion at the same time. Seth LeBlanc, English senior, said drag is a huge
part of his creative life and is a form of social art that serves as a personal means of expression. “When I was younger, I thought that to be gay, you had to be a drag queen,” LeBlanc said. “I didn’t come to appreciate it until much later in life.”

LSU Foundation unveils permanent 30-foot Christmas tree BY MALORI BEZET mbezet@lsureveille.com Students passing in front of the Student Union may notice a new addition to the landscape—the University’s new permanent Christmas tree. The University planted the 30-foot Little Gem Magnolia tree on Sept. 25, and held a dedication Oct. 1 at the tree’s location near Free Speech Plaza, according to a University news release. The University used to import a pre-cut tree to campus and set up in front of the Memorial Tower. Undecided freshman Darby Schoenfield is new to the University’s holiday
festivities, but she is excited to see how the University prepares for the holidays, she said. LSU Foundation’s Campus Beautification Fund financed the tree with direct donations and purchases of the organization’s annual LSU ornament, said Sara Crow, LSU Foundation director of communications and donor relations. Crow said the organization set up the Campus Beautification Fund to provide financial support for beautification projects on campus where state funds were not available. The fund also supports the University’s Spring Greening Day. LSU Foundation began
selling the $20 LSU ornament in 2009 to add to the fund, and ornament buyers over the years led to purchasing the new tree, Crow said. “The LSU Foundation is excited to be a part of the project because it is a unique opportunity for our donors or people who have purchased the LSU ornament to be a part of a campus beautification project that the entire LSU community will enjoy,” Crow said. “That one tree represents a lot of people who made contributions to make that happen.” According to the news release, the University worked to decrease
