Search committee unaware of suit naming Bonnin

The Department of Textiles, Apparel Design and Merchandising and its “Alligator Project” encourage students to experiment with alligator skins and advocates specifically for the use of grade-3 skins of wild alligators, as opposed to the perfect grade-1 skins of farmed alligators.

Assistant professor of apparel design Lisa McRoberts said a certain number of the swamp dwellers must be hunted to prevent overpopulation in Louisiana. According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, wild and farmed alligator harvests currently exceed 300,000 annually, while the population remains steady.

Many designers shy away from wild-caught skins because they are often riddled with imperfections, but McRoberts said the Alligator Project attempts to combat this cycle.

McRoberts said she has infused the use of alligator skin into the curriculum of her graduate-level HUEC 7030 course, which revolves around the application of creativity in the product development process.

“What we’re trying to do is find innovative ways or nontraditional methods of using the alligator,” McRoberts said.

McRoberts said she has done the same with her HUEC 4045 course, called “Synthesis.” The class is a senior collections course where students use a multifunctional team approach to creative problem solving, as well as learning apparel product design, development, evaluation and presentation using advanced

Members of the six-person search committee that hired Linda Bonnin, new University vice president of strategic communications, said her involvement in a bonnin discrimination lawsuit against the University of Memphis was never discussed in interviews.

The committee, chaired by Manship School of Mass Communication Dean Jerry Ceppos, started searching for a candidate in 2013 but did not succeed. The process began again this year and gained traction over the summer.

Bonnin’s hiring was approved at the Sept. 12 Board of Supervisors meeting, according to University Media Relations spokesman Ernie Ballard.

Bonnin was one of three finalists for the position, said Student Government President and committee member Clay Tufts.

SG passes resolution for speed bumps near WCA, Alaska St. Some students ‘confused’ about necessity

The proposal, sponsored by SG Senator Wesley Gore, vice

chair of the Student Life, Diversity and Community Outreach Committee, called for speed bumps to be installed near WCA and Alaska Street and passed with 76 percent of the vote. The location of the speed bumps has yet to be determined.

Gore said he took action and authored the bill because he heard residents of the Residential College Complex talking about the speeding cars and dangers of the WCA parking lot.

During the debate, Gore cited his personal experience with speeding vehicles around WCA this summer.

“I believe that speed bumps or some other solution is needed in the proposed area of the WCA parking lot for the safety of the students living in both the WCA and residential college,” he said.

Obama vows to confront, dismantle Islamic State THE ASSOCIATED PRESS UNITED NATIONS — Declaring the world at a crossroads between war and peace, President Barack Obama vowed at the U.N. on Wednesday to lead a coalition to dismantle an Islamic State “network of death” that has wreaked havoc in the Middle East and drawn the United States back into military action.

Speaking to the annual gathering of the United Nations General Assembly, Obama said the U.S. would be a “respectful and constructive partner” in confronting the militants through force. But he also implored Muslims in the Middle East to reject the ideology that has spawned groups like the Islamic State and to cut off funding that has allowed that terror group and others to thrive.

“Ultimately, the task of rejecting sectarianism and extremism is a generational task — a task for the people of the Middle East themselves,” Obama said in his 38-minute address. “No external power can bring about a transformation of hearts and minds.”

Later, the president convened an unusual meeting of the U.N. Security Council, during which members unanimously adopted a resolution requiring all countries to work to prevent the recruitment and transport of would-be foreign fighters preparing to join terrorist groups

such as the Islamic State group.

Obama’s address came against the backdrop of an expanded U.S. military campaign against the Islamic State group, with airstrikes now hitting targets in both Iraq and Syria. A coalition of five Arab nations joined the U.S. this week in the strikes in Syria: Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

The U.S. also opened another military front with airstrikes this week against a new al-Qaida cell that the Pentagon said was “nearing the execution phase” of a direct attack on the U.S. or Europe.

The threats have drawn Obama back into conflicts in the Middle East that he has long sought to avoid, particularly in Syria, which is mired in a bloody three-year civil war. Just months ago, the president appeared to be on track to fulfill his pledge to end the U.S.-led wars he inherited in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Obama sought to distinguish this current military campaign from those lengthy wars, declaring that he has no intention of sending U.S. troops to occupy foreign lands.

The militant threat in the Middle East is just one in a series of global crises that have tested Obama this year. Russia has repeatedly flouted warning from the U.S. and Europe to stop its threatening moves in

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — A Missouri drill sergeant is guilty of sexually assaulting and harassing eight female soldiers, a military judge ruled Wednesday.

Army Staff Sgt. Angel M. Sanchez, 30, was accused of using his supervisory position with the 14th Military Police Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood to threaten some of the women he was tasked with training. His accusers said the incidents took place in the bathroom of the female barracks as well as in an office shared by drill sergeants.

Sanchez was found guilty of charges including four counts of sexual assault and six counts of abusive sexual contact.

At the outset of the military judicial hearing, Sanchez pleaded guilty Monday to three charges of disobeying orders by having sexual contact with three female trainees. Several additional accusations against Sanchez were dismissed after a pretrial hearing in the spring.

His accusers said the incidents took place in the bathroom

of the women’s barracks as well as an office shared by drill sergeants at Fort Leonard Wood.

Other allegations were brought by a medic in Afghanistan and a soldier in Fort Richardson, Alaska.

Sanchez also served one tour in Iraq, where he earned a Bronze Star and two other combat medals before arriving at the Missouri post in August 2013.

Sanchez’s attorney Ernesto Gapasin questioned the accusers’ credibility, noting that some of the initial accusers were either facing disciplinary action of their own or forced separation from the military at the time complaints against Sanchez were raised. He suggested that three privates who accused Sanchez of forcing them to perform oral sex on him had consented to sex.

The Pentagon’s first formal report on sex assaults in its ranks found that in the vast majority of the cases, the victim was a young, lower-ranking woman and the offender a senior enlisted male service member often in the same unit.

University hiring committees seek diversity in new faculty

As the University seeks to increase diversity within its halls, Hiring new faculty members is more than choosing a name from a pool of applicants Before a new professor steps on the University campus to take the role of teacher and researcher, they are interviewed and vetted by a search committee, said Kevin Cope, president of the Faculty Senate.

The chair of the new professor’s department and the dean of the colleges appoint a team of faculty members to look over a group of applicants. The applicants are narrowed down and interviewed. The committee then submits recommendations to the

college’s dean, who chooses the new member, said Jane Cassidy, vice provost for human resources and facilities management.

LSU President F. King Alexander said earlier this year that the University is looking to hire about 100 new faculty and staff to keep up with growth, especially in the College of Engineering, which has seen about a 15 percent increase in enrollment in the last year.

According to its website, the College of Engineering added 10 new professors and assistant professors to its numbers this semester.

Cassidy said there used to be an informal agreement to choose from a diverse pool of applicants in terms of race, gender, ethnicity or background when hiring.

Now the University is implement-

ing a process to ensure a diverse group of applicants is considered for open positions.

Dereck Rovaris, vice provost for diversity, started at the University in July and serves as adviser to the administration and campus community on matters involving equity, diversity and inclusion, according to the University’s website.

Cassidy said Rovaris is campaigning with the University’s search committees to promote diversity in hiring.

In terms of race, gender, ethnicity and background, diversity in the University’s faculty is important for students, Cassidy said.

“If they see somebody that looks like them they will think ‘I could be that someday,’” Cassidy said.

Cassidy said the University’s Human Resources department handles all of the administrative work with applicants, managing the online applications and getting applicant’s information to the search committees for consideration.

When the University conducts searches for executive faculty, like deans or administrative positions, it sometimes hires a search firm to aid the committee’s efforts.

Using these firms can cost as much as $100,000, Cassidy said. But in instances such as the search for a new dean of the E.J. Ourso College of Business, using a firm to search for a dean is the industry standard.

The University hired seven new deans this year, but not all of them required the use of a

search firm. It depends on the position, Cassidy said. For example, Texas-based R. William Funk & Associates was used to help the search for Alexander.

Guillermo Ferreyra, former interim dean of the College of Science and professor of mathematics, said the University places advertisements written to attract applicants in publications.

Each advertisement placed says the University is an equal opportunity institution.

“The advertisements are placed in several publications read by the candidates, like professional societies’ journals,” Ferreyra said.

A diversity advocate is on every committee to ensure minority candidates are considered and writes a report for the college, Ferreyra said.

Student Union Art Gallery undergoes renovations this fall

Ongoing renovations are the reason behind the barren art gallery, said Heather Bilodeau, marketing communications coordinator of the University’s Auxiliary Services.

“The LSU Student Union Art Gallery is currently going through renovations to help better the space for all students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Greater Baton Rouge community,” Bilodeau said.

The Art Gallery’s renova-

tion will include installing LED lights, replacing carpet and patching up walls. Bilodeau said passersby already should notice the replacement of the Gallery’s solid wood doors with glass ones.

“We wanted to be able to open up the area and allow people to see in and get a glimpse of what the Gallery has to offer,” she said.

“The remainder of these renovations are going to help bring the art to life in a more vibrant light and give the space a more modern and updated feel.”

Bilodeau said a lack of art is not to blame for the Gallery’s prolonged closure. The Gallery, she said, is in the process of planning its first post-renovation exhibit, a show titled “A Louisiana

State of Mind.”

“We are currently contacting Baton Rouge and Louisiana artists to see if they would be willing to display some of their pieces in this exhibit,” Bilodeau said. “Once we get the OK from contractors that are currently working on the Art Gallery, we will immediately install this exhibit.”

In the “Louisiana State of Mind” show, spectators will see what sets the state apart through the eyes of these various Baton Rouge and Louisiana artists, Bilodeau said. She expects the exhibit to be displayed for three months after it is unveiled.

“This isn’t the only show

we’ve got in store this academic year,” Bilodeau said. “Like every other year, there are approximately four shows that should rotate through the Art Gallery, each of which should last two and half months to three months in the Gallery for all to see.”

Interior design sophomore Sarah Smith said she would like to see the Gallery reopen soon and showcase student work selected from various art classes.

“There are so many talented people whose work is overlooked,” Smith said. “I think having that opportunity to showcase their work would be very rewarding.”

Smith said the University’s

art departments are underrepresented and ignored, and the art building is evidence of this.

“I’m surprised there’s even a space for a gallery at this point,” Smith said.

Expanding the Union Art Gallery, she said, would be an appropriate way to be more inclusive of the art department.

Communication disorders freshman Teresa Zumo agreed with Smith saying student art, rather than local art, deserves a larger presence at the University.

“Art is such an amazing talent,” Zumo said. “We have the resources, so why not use them to show all of the talent that we, as a University, have to offer?”

Students express political concerns

University students have common issues and policies they want their politicians to change, and some student political leaders are vocalizing what they want from politicians this election cycle.

Millennials are the largest generation in the United States, according to Generation We. Millennials can influence politics, but often choose not to use this power.

Destin Sensky, agricultural business senior and president of College Republicans, said there are 21 million millennials living with their parents, up from 18 million only five years ago, so 36 percent of millennials are living under their parents’ roofs.

“Part of it can probably be attributed to the high price of education,” Sensky said.

Student loan debt is at an all-time high, and Sensky said there is more student loan debt than credit card debt in the U.S. “I think it’s really important that the older generations

that are passing this legislation know that they might be helping us to get through college and stuff,” Sensky said.

“But eventually we’re going to be the ones paying for it, so they’re not really doing us any favors.”

Leslie LaCoste, political science senior and co-chair of the College Democrats’ executive committee, said politicians’ decisions in Louisiana have affected the University and University students’ educations should be important to our politicians.

“All of the cuts in funding that has recently happened to LSU have of course affected it,” LaCoste said. “The political science department alone has had a lot less teachers than it used to have and it has not been able to offer as many courses as it used to because of that lack of funding.”

Garrett Clawson, political science junior and president of Common Sense Action, said legislators must collaborate to form a mechanism to keep University students in Louisiana instead of seeking jobs elsewhere.

He said the University has a problem with outmigration, when students take advantage of TOPS and leave the state.

“I think that the governor as well as the legislature should try to simonize job growth.

Bring businesses into the state to revive those job opportunities so people have a reason to stay here when they graduate,” Clawson said.

Clawson described three ways to make changes in politics, the first being money. Millennials, however, do not have the disposable income to invest in campaigns.

Another way is networking and connections, but college students typically don’t have those either.

However, numbers can make changes in politics, and millennials have those numbers.

“We don’t have money, we don’t have connections, but we have numbers,” Clawson said. “That’s how we expect to see the change made.”

Facility Services aims to keep bathrooms clean, operational

BY MALORI BEZET mbezet@lsureveille.com Facility Services has teams of people working to manage a vital part of campus — bathrooms.

Bathrooms are frequented areas on campus found in every building aside from Dodson Auditorium, and some need constant upkeep.

Robert Benton, assistant director of Facility Maintenance, said funding availability determines large-scale maintenance work and renovations.

Deferred maintenance funds, capital outlay funds and building use fees, among others, can finance those projects, according to Tammy Millican, assistant director of Facility Services.

“Bathroom renovations are very expensive,” Benton said.

“We could do a whole classroom for the same price as a very small two-stall bathroom.”

“No one lives in a bathroom,” said Sam Territo, director of Facility Systems.

“It’s something you use. We tend to focus on keeping them clean and operational over beautiful,” Stacy Whitfield, assistant director of Building Services, said every custodial worker on campus is able to clean bathrooms, and workers monitor some buildings more than others.

The custodial staff checks high-traffic bathrooms daily while they prepare low

traffic bathrooms every evening. The staff implements black light cleaning when bathrooms require thorough bacteria removal, Whitfield said.

The deep cleaning method uses a black light to find germs and bacteria invisible in regular light.

“You take a building like ECE — it is mostly research and like an office environment — and it can go 24 hours without a lot of attention,” Territo said. “You take a Tureaud or a Lockett, no, because of the volume of the students and usage.”

Whitfield said custodial staff answer daily calls to bathrooms needing cleaning attention or supplies like toilet paper, paper towels and soap.

Millican said the office’s work control department receives calls from building coordinators, dispatches workers and Facility Services encourages students to call or tell a building department if they notice an issue.

The University’s maintenance department also receives frequent calls for issues like stalls not locking, plumbing issues and burnt out lights, said Benton.

“I think we do a pretty good job of responding to those kind of calls. Keeping [the bathrooms] operational is our number one goal,” Territo said.

Now Facility Services is beginning to examine Lockett Hall’s bathrooms. The origi-

nal plans were poorly designed with narrow bathroom and stall doors fit for “grade school” children, Territo said.

Whitfield said he noticed the tightness, because some custodial equipment does not fit through the door.

Many major bathroom renovations are part of entire building renovations like the Business Education Complex, but some, like Pleasant Hall, are independent.

Facility Services renovated Pleasant Hall’s first floor bathrooms to help with enrollment, since many campus tours start there.

“Some of the stalls weren’t locking, so parents were having to hold the doors for other parents, and it was kind of embarrassing,” Benton said.

Materials the University is required to use are stronger and longer lasting while being easier to clean, Whitfield said.

New dispensers allow bathrooms to remain stocked for longer periods.

Territo said buildings with newer bathrooms are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and have a certain number of stalls per the occupancy of buildings, but new bathrooms do not always mean better bathrooms.

Territo compared old, reliable bathrooms to cars, “A classic car is a classic. When you get something that’s built really well, it will stand the test of time.”

Delahoussaye’s mental process yields positive results

The New Iberia, Louisiana native is in his second season kicking for the Tigers after

redshirting in 2012 and making his first appearance in 2013. He’s a perfect 4-4 on field goals this season and is 17-18 in his career. His only miss came last season against Furman, when he sustained a groin injury in warmups and tried to kick through it.

But that injury is long gone, and Delahoussaye is back in kicking shape. He lost some leg

The LSU volleyball team gave No. 14 Kentucky a fight in its home debut and Southeastern Conference opener Wednesday night, but the Wildcats proved to be too much for the Tigers and defeated them in four sets (25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17).

LSU (5-5, 0-1 SEC) led by at least three points in every set of the contest, but it seemed that every time it began to extend its lead, Kentucky (11-2, 1-0 SEC) would come out of a timeout and fire back.

“The number one thing we did is we sat back,” said LSU coach Fran Flory. “We got a lead, and we relaxed rather than attack … We just were not resilient enough or tenacious enough. When we have a team down, we have to have a

killer instinct. We haven’t had it all season, honestly.”

The Tigers led a majority of the first set and worked their way to a 19-16 lead. But Kentucky came out of a timeout strong and put together a five-point rally to take a two-point lead. The Tigers never recovered and the Wildcats went on to take the first set, 25-22.

LSU held a lead for a majority of the second set as well, thanks in large part to four Kentucky service errors. The Wildcats threatened another comeback, tying the set at 23-23, but LSU responded with back-to-back kills to take the set.

The third set got off to a promising start for the Tigers when they came out of the locker room and scored three straight points.

That proved to be the only bright spot of the set for LSU. Kentucky responded with five

consecutive points of its own and kept control for the remainder of the set. The Wildcats led by as many as eight points on its way to a 25-20 win.

It felt like déjà vu in the fourth set as the Tigers took a 4-0 lead thanks in large part to junior outside hitter Cati Leak, who opened the period with two kills and a block. Once again, LSU’s lead did not last long.

The Wildcats fired back with an 8-1 run to take a three-point lead early in the set. The Tigers fought back to tie the contest at 1010, but Kentucky immediately put together four straight points for a lead it refused to relinquish for the remainder of the contest.

LSU aims to improve RPI heading into SEC schedule

BY David Gray dgray@lsureveille.com Coaches and athletes usually say rankings don’t properly gauge a team’s ability or success.

Any team could thoroughly dominate a game only to find itself on the losing end, which could ultimately drop its ranking in the polls. Conversely, a squad could get blatantly outplayed, squeak out a victory in the end and see its stock suddenly rise.

Rankings are that unpredictable.

But the Rating Percentage Index rankings, which are based on a team’s wins, losses and strength of schedule, mean everything in women’s college soccer. The LSU soccer team will have to jump up in the standings if it hopes to be among the 64 clubs competing in the NCAA tournament.

The NCAA released its inaugural 2014 RPI rankings on Monday and had the Tigers (4-5-1) pegged at No. 96, which ranked 12th among 14 Southeastern Conference programs.

But LSU soccer coach Brian Lee isn’t concerned with his team’s current low standing, especially with half of the season remaining.

“The RPI’s a mathematical equation based on a good supply of data, and 10 games isn’t much data,” Lee said. “So you can change that a whole lot over the course of the next six weeks. The most encouraging part of it is how well the SEC fared. We have a lot of opportunity to move up.”

Saying the SEC fared well may be a bit of an understatement. Of the eight conferences with clubs ranked in the RPI’s top 35, the SEC led the way with eight teams represented.

The conference’s earlyseason dominance is a reason why LSU’s low ranking and sub-.500 record hasn’t troubled Lee yet. The strength of the Tigers’ schedule, which was ranked as the sixth-hardest to start the season, is just as vital as their wins and losses.

“You not only have to win games, you have to get the right opponents and hope they’re season goes as well as yours,” Lee said. “All we do on Friday nights is focus on our game, hope we win it and then start looking at results to see how the teams on our schedule did.”

But as important as strength of schedule is, wins and losses still heavily factor into the equation.

“You need to have an RPI in the range of top 54 or 55 for atlarge selections, and once you’re there, [the NCAA] will take a closer look at your resume.,” Lee said. “What your resume has to have are two or three top-50 wins.

I don’t think there’s ever been a team to not make the NCAA Tournament who fits that criteria.”

But LSU dropped two matches against No. 34 Missouri and No. 41 Duke, its other top-50 opponents this season. However, junior midfielder Natalia GomezJunco said it’s better for the squad to lose against tougher opponents early instead of defeating lesser competition before the start of SEC play.

“I prefer playing those tough games and learning from them and becoming stronger than easing through everything and getting knocked out in SEC,” Gomez-Junco said.

With seven top-35 teams remaining on their schedule, the Tigers have ample opportunity to build a respectable NCAA resume, which was Lee’s plan all along.

“Certainly the nonconference schedule we chose to play was difficult, but those are the kind of games we like as coaches and players,” Lee said. “We could schedule ourselves for whatever record we want, but we chose a difficult path for the betterment of the long term.”

Tigers look to better execute, defend set pieces

BY Morgan prewitt mprewitt@lsureveille.com Coming into the 2014 season, LSU soccer coach Brian Lee knew the approach to set pieces had to change to compete against the elite teams in the Southeastern Conference.

This change started with the recruiting class of 2014, highlighted by the addition of freshmen defenders Jordane Carvery, Alexis Urch, midfielder Christyna Pitre and forward Jorian Baucom.

Each of these players is taller than 5-feet-7-inches, and Lee said he recruited them specifically for their physicality and ability to control the ball in the air.

“We have height, something that was missing the last few years,” said junior midfielder Natalia Gomez-Junco. “That helps a lot in midfield to win those first and second balls. In corners and set pieces, we definitely look dangerous every time we have one.”

Taking advantage of set pieces is crucial for the Tigers, whose style of play is not focused on getting corner kicks and other set

pieces. In 2013, LSU ranked 12th in the SEC in total corners and 13th in average corners with only 4.20 per game.

Although the quantity of corners per game has not changed this season, the Tigers’ potential to convert these chances into goals has increased from last year.

“Natalia and [sophomore midfielder] Emma [Fletcher] can put the ball where it needs to be, but for the first time, we have players who can head it in or head it out,” Lee said. “Carvery, Urch and Pitre, that’s a pretty imposing line of kids challenging headers.

We’ve just been a little unlucky not to score more.”

Despite the trio’s ability to effectively head the ball, the Tigers have not yet scored off a corner this season. The youth of the team’s targets on set pieces makes these chances difficult to convert.

“For us, [freshman] Lily [Alfeld] is the goalkeeper, and Urch, Pitre, Carvery and Baucom are some of our main targets for set pieces, so we are not just young when the ball is rolling,” Lee said.

“In set pieces, we are really, really young, so there is always going to be an adjustment period.”

LSU has scored on set pieces this season despite its struggles on corners. Gomez-Junco curved in a free kick from outside the box to score in the second game of the

season, and Baucom slammed home a penalty kick against BYU on Sept. 11.

Defending set pieces is another focus for the Tigers, especially with No. 10 Texas A&M coming to Baton Rouge on Friday. The Aggies have scored nine goals so

far this season on set pieces.

LSU’s ability to convert set pieces into goals and defend opponents’ set pieces successfully will play a key role in determining its success through a conference schedule, littered with RPI top 50 teams.

Tight ends struggling to produce for Tigers’ offense BY michael haarala mhaarala@lsureveille.com It’s a tough time to be a tight end in Baton Rouge.

Four games into the season, the position has produced the least for the No. 17 LSU football team’s offense.

As a unit, the tight ends have been targeted six times but have only caught two balls for a total of 12 yards. One of the catches was a completion from sophomore quarterback Anthony Jennings to senior tight end Travis Dickson for seven yards that he fumbled against Wisconsin.

“I’m not sure what’s going on,” said sophomore tight end DeSean Smith. “I thought it was going to turn out a little better for the tight ends this year.”

At the same point last season, nine passes were aimed at the tight ends with four completions for a total of 98 yards. There has been no turnover in contributors at tight end from the 2013 season, with Dickson, Smith, junior Dillon Gordon and senior Logan Stokes all returning.

What has changed, however, is their involvement in the passing game.

With strong receivers in Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, the tight ends anticipated having a smaller role in 2013. But coming into 2014, they expected to be utilized more with the youth at the receiver position. After dropping passes and making mistakes throughout the beginning of the season, they have been relegated back to primarily blocking.

“There is a little bit of frustration,” Smith said. “Everybody wants the ball. If you didn’t want the ball, you wouldn’t be here.”

Although they are not as involved in the passing game, the tight ends said they still have an important role in the Tigers’ offense.

“It’s something as tight ends we repeat all the time,” Dickson said. “We have a hidden involvement in this offense.”

One factor in their lack of involvement in the passing game is how often LSU has rushed the ball this season. Through last weekend’s game against Mississippi State, LSU has passed the ball 96 times and has ran exactly two times more with 192 rushes.

Some of this stems from the receiving corps’ and quarterbacks’ lack of experience. Jennings, who has been the starter throughout the season, hasn’t completed a pass to a wide receiver who isn’t a freshman or sophomore. This partially is due to the fact that nine of the 13 receivers on LSU’s roster are freshmen.

With all of the Tigers’ youth, running the ball has been LSU’s primary play choice. However, the passing game has yielded more success than the ground attack. The Tigers have picked up a total of 768 yards and have averaged four yards per attempt on running plays — but in the air, they have picked up 983 yards and averaged 10.24 yards per attempt.

“As you can see, we can throw the ball,” Smith said. “I don’t

Though they have been underutilized in the passing game, the tight ends still have an important role for the Tigers this season. Even with some frustration from the tight ends, they are

still positive and want to make the most of the opportunities they do get.

“There may be games where we don’t have any involvement in the passing game,” Dickson said. “And then all of a sudden one week opens up, and we

become a big part of the passing game. It changes from week to week, so we know to stay positive and to keep looking into the future.”

Coaches optimistic about upcoming season

BY will cotchery II wcotchery@lsureveille.com The LSU swimming and diving teams begin their 20142015 campaign with the Purple and Gold Intrasquad meet this Friday at 3 p.m. at the LSU Natatorium.

Swimming coach Dave Geyer said he’s excited about the mixture of returning veterans, led by senior captains Amber Carter and Frank Greeff, and an influx of talented new swimmers for this season’s team.

He said great leadership from Carter, Greeff and the other upperclassmen will be the backbone and tone-setter for everything the team does this season.

Both the women’s and men’s squads finished the 2013-2014 season with records of 6-3 and 3-3 in dual match play, respectively, while both sides had a 1-3 record in Southeastern Conference meets. Geyer said the focus this year is to take the necessary steps toward the SEC

Championships and eventually the NCAA Championships.

“If we’re on the winning side of some of these dual meets, that’s great,” Geyer said. “If we’re finishing second in these meets, then as long as we’re showing that right progression in our individual performances or the team, that’s what we need to do to excel in our conference.”

Because the Natatorium underwent renovations during the summer, and the closest Division I facility available is in Houston, working collectively as a unit was a challenge. The swimmers and divers used the time apart to perfect their crafts individually.

Junior diver Cassie Weil and sophomore swimmer Kara Kopsco earned valuable experience participating in national competitions this summer. Weil posted two top-eight finishes at the AT&T Diving Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee from Aug. 12 to 17 while Kopsco represented the United States at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Maui, Hawaii, from Aug. 27 to 30.

Geyer said the summer is about the athletes’ respective individual goals and desired accomplishments. He added competing in any national competition will only boost the players’ morales. “[At these events], they’re racing against national champions and Olympians,” Geyer said.

“Any time you have the opportunity at any point of the season to compete at the elite level, it gives you that confidence moving forward with that.”

Diving coach Doug Shaffer said great chemistry and great leadership already exists within the team but stressed continuing to move forward will be the

biggest contribution for their success.

“Every single day, every single competition, every single time we do weights, it all builds towards that [success],” Shaffer said. “Staying focused on the target and utilizing every single day to the best of your ability to work towards obtaining that goal.”

“They’re game plan was to take away Cati Leak, and they did,” Flory said. “We haven’t won many matches with Cati Leak not playing positively and carrying a load for us.”

Sophomore middle blocker Briana Holman served as a rare positive on the Tigers’ roster Wednesday, leading the team with 13 kills, five blocks and a .296 hitting percentage.

But Holman’s solid outing didn’t make the loss any easier to swallow.

“This game was more of us,” Holman said. “It’s not necessarily something that they did special. It’s the things we didn’t do.”

When LSU is on offense and reaches its own 45 yard line, Delahoussaye’s job begins. He kicks two or three balls into the net to get his rhythm down and prepare his leg.

As the Tigers get in field goal range, Delahoussaye makes his way to the front of the sideline and stands near the coaches.

When its time to take the field, his instincts kick in.

“This sounds funny, but I don’t remember anything,” Delahoussaye said. “I guess it is so much muscle memory, it just happens so fast.”

Before the ball is snapped, Delahoussaye takes three steps backward and two steps to the left. After his backward steps, he looks up at his target and makes sure his foot is in a straight line with where he wants the ball to go.

strength because of the injury, so Delahoussaye hit the weight room, making his leg stronger than ever and adding an extra six yards to his kick length.

Kicking is a robotic position, one in which even the slightest deviation can be catastrophic. It can also be one of the most mentally taxing positions because an entire game can be riding on the kicker’s foot.

“In pressure situations, I act like every kick is the same exact kick,” Delahoussaye said.

“If I’m kicking a 55-yard field goal or an extra point, it’s the same kick. I shouldn’t be hitting it with any more or any less power. I should be kicking it the same no matter what.”

Because the position is so mechanical, Delahoussaye has little variation in his process, even at practice.

Delahoussaye takes a quick jog around the field and stretches to warm up before his kicking leg gets some action. After a couple of leg swings without the ball, he does stationary kicks and aims to hit a specific spot, usually one of the upright posts. When he feels warmed up, he starts kicking full field goals from various distances.

This process happens both in practice and the first time he hits the field before games.

When Delahoussaye takes the field a second time for warmups, he does regular field goals with longsnapper Reid Ferguson and holder Brad Kragthorpe, both juniors.

The chemistry between the three is crucial, especially in pressure field goal situations.

“Me and Kragthorpe and Reid have a really good relationship,” Delahoussaye said.

“If one of those parts mess up, it makes my job a lot harder.

That’s what I love about these guys: They never mess up.”

“I always start with a jab step with my left foot, and then I full step with my right foot,” Delahoussaye said. “My next step is planting right next to the ball, and then I lock my knee on contact. I keep my right foot open as long as possible.”

“I don’t want to be crunched down, because you lose a lot of power,” Delahoussaye said. “I want my chest to be nice and high.”

Chest up.

“I’m going to look at where I’m hitting the ball,” Delahous-

saye said. “I don’t want to take my eyes off the target of the sweet spot of the ball.”

Head down.

And just like that, the kick is completed, and Delahoussaye walks off the field. The sophomore has mastered these three steps through high school and collegiate kicking, and he knows he’ll make his kicks if he performs the steps he’s memorized.

Delahoussaye should be crucial as the season continues.

He’s already scored 121 points in his career with the Tigers

and is on pace to eclipse former LSU kicker Colt David’s school record of 369 points if he plays through his eligibility.

Even though kicking at the collegiate level can be a science, it all comes down to a simple series of steps for Delahoussaye.

“I’ll preach it until I’m black and blue in the face,” Delahoussaye said. “Foot open, chest up, head down.”

Symphony orchestra to play Beck piece

At its concert, the LSU Symphony Orchestra will be performing the “Song Reader Symphony,” an arrangement of six songs from Beck Hansen’s “Song Reader.”

Beck is an American alternative-rock musician who rose to fame in the mid-’90s with his 1993 single, “Loser.” Since then, Beck has had a continuously successful music career with genre-crossing albums such as “Odelay,” the particularly hip-hop influenced “Midnite Vultures” and the singer/ songwriter-style “Sea Change.”

In December 2012, Beck released “Song Reader,” a 20song album in the form of an intricately designed book of sheet music. For over a year, Beck didn’t release any studio versions of the songs.

In an interview with National Public Radio, Beck said the idea was for anyone to be able to create their own interpretation of the songs. The result was thousands of YouTube videos of amateur and professional musicians performing the songs.

The “Song Reader Symphony” was orchestrated by associate professor of percussion Brett Dietz, who will also be conducting the piece.

University student aims to capture college career on film

BY LOGAN KEEN lkeen@lsureveille.com University student Darrick Landreneau may be best known for his gameday attire on Saturday nights in Death Valley, but his everyday life revolves around something entirely different.

The 20-year-old political science junior is easy to spot on campus — for the last 706 days,

he’s carried around a video camera in hopes of producing what he calls “a point-of-view college movie.”

Landreneau, who studied broadcast journalism in high school, first started filming on Oct. 12, 2012, and said he films an average of four hours of footage a day. 21-year-old marketing junior Caleb Phillips helps edit the thousands of hours of footage collected and

occasionally steps behind the camera himself. He cited the raw feel their project has as one of the reasons it’s so distinct.

“We’ve documented everything,” Phillips said. “My relationship with my girlfriend, our relationship with each other, everything.” The project, the pair’s “first big project together,” is titled “From My Eyes” and could include foot-

New Orleans band Stoop Kids creates new ‘doo-hop’ genre

While putting the finishing touches on its second album, The Daily Reveille sat down with Stoop Kids’ Griffin Dean and Joe Tontillo to talk about its origin and goal in the music industry.

The Daily Reveille: How did Stoop Kids begin?

Griffin Dean: Over two years ago, I started recording an EP in my dorm room.

I knew once I started playing shows I’d need a live

band, so I started looking for members. Everyone in Stoop Kids met on our intramural softball team. Three of us are actually pursuing degrees in music. A year after forming, we started working on a full length album, and that came out almost two years ago.

TDR: You’re working on the second album already?

GD: We’ve already finished it. It’s currently in its postproduction phase—that’s why we made the Kickstarter.

We’re ordering CDs, vinyl records and planning some heavy radio promotion. Come November, we’ll be doing a huge promotional bump. The album will be out in January.

Hopefully it’ll be our next big push and our introduction to the world.

TDR: How did you decide on the name Stoop Kids?

GD: Have you ever watched the show “Hey Arnold!”? Well, Stoop Kid is a character from the show. It was just a way to call back to the ’90s.

TDR: According to your biography, Stoop Kids describes itself as doo-wop meets hip-hop.

How did that idea come about?

GD: The Beach Boys were a huge influence on us, as well as A Tribe Called Quest and

‘Red Band Society’ the hospital version of ‘The Breakfast Club’ A KEEN EYE logan keen Entertainment Writer “Red Band Society” is “The Breakfast Club” in a hospital. You may like this newfound revelation, and you may not, but it’ll be true either way.

The main ingredients are all there — the athletes (there are two of them this time around), the princess, the basket case, the criminal and the brain. While John Hughes’ iconic coming-of-age masterpiece revolved around those five characters, and those alone, “Red Band Society” features a variety of players to complement its ensemble cast.

The cast of attempts, admirably if not equally, to follow in the footsteps of the proverbial “Brat Pack” — there’s the pair of Jordi and Leo to Emilio Estevez’s oppressed star wrestler; resident bad girl Kara to Molly Ringwald’s snooty princess; the eternally scheming Dash attempting to imitate Judd Nelson’s

criminal; Emma, the girl recovering from an eating disorder, to Ally Sheedy’s aggressively introverted basket case; and the adorably precocious narrator, the comatose Charlie to Anthony Michael Hall’s pressure-bound nerd.

While “The Breakfast Club” is an hour and a half motion picture, expect “Red Band Society” to be more of a slow burn.

Despite the obvious similarities, “Red Band Society” has its own idiosyncrasies. Rather than Paul Gleason’s sneering principal, “Red Band” has its resident authority figure (though you’d think there’d be more of them in a hospital for kids), the incomparable Octavia Spencer plays Charlie’s pediatric nurse. She’s intimidating at first but as expected, she turns out to have a heart of gold.

All in all, “Red Band Society” is worth your time, and it isn’t likely to get cancelled anytime soon — when “Glee” concludes in the spring, it seems a perfect fit for this show to take its place in the primest of primetime slots, given the combination of comedy and tragedy that’s pretty hot right now. It’s true that the premise is

perhaps a tad absurd. A hospital wing full of sick kids, many of them terminal, is enough to make the most grown men cry. But “Red Band Society” manages to make itself endearing, a method that seems almost necessary for subject matter so innately dark.

If there’s anything to be said to detract from the show’s otherwise as-good-as-advertised pilot episode, it’s the sugarcoated world in which the characters reside.

Despite their primarily terminal illnesses, the kids appear overflowing with energy. Adults never appear at inopportune times to ruin the fun, and the kids’ lives are altogether a basket of sunshine.

The narrator, Charlie, is entirely comatose and yet he can hear everything around him, as the show auspiciously bridges the gap between real and magical with little more than a quip from a little kid to assuage you.

At a glance, the pilot wows in several ways. It’s cleverly balanced for such a large cast, doesn’t take itself too seriously and is downright adorable. Viewers await the day that Hughes makes his cameo appearance.

Six days ago today, Apple released the latest additions to its long-running line of smartphones, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Since being issued, the iPhone 6 series has been snatched up by every man, woman and child who can get their hands (and wallets) on them.

Along with the newest edition of the Apple mobile operating system iOS 8, the new phones boast several new features, the most significant of which is the size of the phone. The iPhone 6 measures 4.7 inches, while the iPhone 6 Plus has a length of 5.5 inches. That’s nearly half a foot of phone.

With phones that long and thicknesses ranging from 6.9 to 7.1 mm, these new smartphones could be structurally questionable.

Actually, it’s not even a question.

Just one week on the shelves, the iPhone 6 series has come under fire for bending in consumers’ pockets. Several videos have appeared on YouTube with the new phones sporting obvious bends across the aluminum backplates.

If you can’t resist the groupthink consumerism and the temptation of a bright and shiny new product, there are several things you can do to win the Battle of the Bend: 1. Buy a solid phone case. There are countless brands of phone protection products. Top brands include Speck, Incase, OtterBox and LifeProof. These cases provide support to these fragile rectangles we devote our lives to.

2. If you can avoid it, don’t carry the phone in your pocket.

Invest in shirts with front pockets to continue a hands-free, easily accessible lifestyle. If anything will come from this new phone series, it will be the swift resurgence of

fanny packs in popular fashion.

3. Be phone aware. You’re carrying around the most expensive piece of aluminum and glass in your life. If you’re not going to buy an entirely new wardrobe, you need to be diligent of your phone’s place in space. If you’re sitting down, take your phone out of your front pocket. Definitely be wary if your phone is in your back pocket.

4. One last ditch effort for saving your tears for when you actually buy the phone: Wait it out.

Control yourself for five minutes and wait out the masses. Give it a few weeks. If you’re lucky, the iPhone 6 series will be called back because of a software defect or the more apparent bending issue.

Follow any or all of these guidelines and you could be saved the heartache of wasting seven hours in line for a flimsy $200 Facebook machine.

There’s some soul, jazz, new wave and psychedelic rock in our music as well, and we wanted to create a sound that had never been done before. When I started writing, I wanted to combine what I knew well, which was making hip-hop beats and harmonizing. That’s how doo-hop started.

Joe Tontillo: We all love the old- school music of the ’60s, ’70s and even the ’40s. We all have a passion for hip-hop. The doo-hop feel came naturally.

TDR: What is the songwriting process like for Stoop Kids?

GD: I’ll be in my own space and create the foundation of the song, and I’ll bring it to the guys and see how they feel about it. Once I show them the song, we begin working on it as a live band. I’ll write the lyrics

and we flesh out the rest as we go.

TDR: You’re all students right now, as well as artists. How are you juggling both?

GD: We’re all graduating in May, but we want to make this our livelihood.

JT: It’s a struggle to juggle music and school. I’m in class all the time. We all have very conflicting schedules, and it’s hard to find rehearsal and practice time. We have our priorities in order, so we make it work.

TDR: So what’s the big goal for Stoop Kids?

GD: We want to be sustainably touring in the future and possibly international. We want to be financially comfortable doing this. Part of us wants to be in the music world as a major band, but being able to make a living off of it is the dream.

LSU fans celebrate football season with variety of foods

Football lovers and foodies, however, have more to celebrate, especially if they live in Louisiana.

Tailgaters from all around the state gather on Saturdays in Baton Rouge to partake in a tradition that began long before any seasonal fall beverages gained popularity. They reunite with friends, play “Louisiana Saturday Night” and start cooking before the football game.

Tailgaters and LSU alumni Herb Firmin and Adam Boé have participated in this ritual for decades and have made a wide variety of meals.

“Gumbo, chili, étouffée—you name it,” Firmin said, gesturing toward the diverse selection of food they prepared and served underneath their purple and gold tent.

Firmin and Boé said jambalaya is another popular tailgating dish

at pregame gatherings around Tiger Stadium.

They said Louisiana tailgaters do more than flip burgers — they take the time to make Louisiana food.

“They’re even cooking a whole hog,” Boé said, referring to their tailgate neighbors.

Boé prides himself on having missed only one game over the course of several decades. Boé, Firmin and their families and friends have been enjoying their homemade tailgate dishes the entire time.

Another proud LSU tailgater, Jason Doré, has been tailgating for years, never missing a home or away game for a decade.

While his tailgate offers music, a variety of beverages, a television to watch other college games and a view of the Indian Mounds, Doré does not skimp on the quality of the food.

Doré and several of his friends use ingredients from locally owned businesses to make their gameday meals, including fresh hamburger buns from a small bakery in Lafayette. He and his neighbors

also share ingredients whenever anyone is in need.

Doré’s tailgate uses Louisiana spices to enhance dishes and cooks meals according to LSU’s opponents that day. For example, tailgating guests eat alligator when Florida is playing, Doré said.

However, tailgaters also share food to welcome other teams’ fans.

“We give them a drink, give them some good Cajun food and show our southern Louisiana hospitality,” Doré said. “We want to show how to welcome away-game fans in your town.”

Many football fans take advantage of Doré’s myriad of foods and drinks, turning the tailgate into an enormous crowd that overflows beyond his tent.

With so many people coming to campus for the festivities, mass communication junior Abigail Lallande said that when it comes to football fare, she has “seen everything.”

“My friends cook baked chicken and hot dogs,” Lallande said. “Basically outdoor food. But

Cellphone usage becoming subconsciously excessive Taming of the shirin shirin chowdhury Columnist I spend a pretty decent amount of my time people watching. I people watch on my way to class, in class, at red lights. If you’re reading this in the Quad, I’m probably watching you right now.

Just kidding — that’s totally creepy. If I haven’t scared you away yet, allow me to talk about one of the observations I’ve made while people watching.

People use their cellphones a lot.

Texting, social media, Internet, GPS — cellphones aren’t just phones anymore.

They help connect us to the rest of the world.

This world fits conveniently inside our pockets, unless you have one of those huge Galaxy phones. Those will probably stick out of your pocket a little.

Cellphones have turned into such a constant part of our lives that frequently checking them has become a subconscious act. It’s habitual and doesn’t really require any active thinking.

Have you ever been doing something important, like studying, only to suddenly realize that you’re on your phone and you don’t even remember how or why you got there?

Yeah, me too.

There have been times where I start using my phone

for no apparent reason. I’ll just be there, checking all my different apps, only to realize there are no updates. There’s nothing new to look at, but I’m still doing it.

We all know what it’s like to be at a restaurant with a friend only to realize that you’re both just sitting there on your phones, staring into nothingness.

Or maybe you’re in class.

And you really want to pay attention, but deep down, all you’re thinking about is whether or not that guy you have a crush on has liked your Instagram photo.

So instead of being respectful to your teachers, you decide you’ll check your phone every 5 minutes for the rest of the day.

Checking our phones is a temptation that most people don’t even bother to resist.

And then there’s the problem of people using their phones while driving, which is clearly a dangerous thing to do. And people know that, but everyone reading this has probably done it at least once.

The temptation to check our phones follows us everywhere.

We’re so accustomed to using our phones, that when we aren’t using them, something feels off.

If you’ve ever accidentally left your phone at home, you know what I’m talking about. Being on campus without a phone feels like walking around naked.

All cellphone users need is a little self-awareness. Everyone should take a critical

making an effort to minimize it.

If you aren’t always using your phone, it might open your eyes to things you didn’t notice before, like how much people use their phones.

I feel like I’m getting a little redundant, so I’ll cut to the chase: The next time you get that urge to check your phone for no reason, especially while you’re driving, suppress it. Instead,

take the time to look at the world around you, not the screen in your pocket. Talk to your friend at the restaurant, or maybe actually pay attention in class.

There’s a world outside your phone, too.

You should be afraid of the post-graduation abyss THE AMAZING CYNIC RYAN MONK Columnist An incredibly wise man once said, “I just want to be — I just want to be successful.”

All but the very most depressed and cynical of us can relate to this beautifully written statement, but how many of us actually know how to do it?

For the majority of my youth I worshipped my textbooks. Made sure to never use their titles in vain. Never missed a class without saying 100 “Hail McGrawHill”s.

Eventually, I realized that no matter how much I read, I was never going to find the “How To Answer When Your Grandmother Asks What You’re Planning To Do After Graduation” chapter.

But over the years, I’ve compiled a few of my own answers you could try out next time you find yourself in one of those shameful interrogation sessions:

1) “Well, you know, I’m re-

ally just trying to keep my options open right now.”

2) “Oh, I’m so glad you asked that! I actually have an interview tomorrow for ... Wait, I’m not supposed to tell you. It’s top secret!”

3) “Why the hell does everything have to be about money with you? Ah, I’m so sick of this family! This is why we don’t call you for your birthday anymore!”

In any event, here I am less than a year from what I always thought was ensured financial, social and psychological stability. And I’m teeter-tottering on

the tips of my toes on top of a terribly tall mountain.

In other words, my life is nowhere near stable and not even alliteration can fix that.

While the Olinde Career Center is a phenomenal service, you can’t expect the people there to hold your hand through the entire process of growing up.

That’s your job. Or more likely, your lack thereof.

In fact, it’s probably about that time to start submitting the first drafts of speeches for your kids’ elementary school career days for review by the English department. The older you get, the faster time sprints by. The clock’s a-ticking, and the digits on your phone are changing shape.

J.D. put it extremely well in an episode of “Scrubs.”

“I thought growing up was something that happened automatically as you got older. But

it turns out it’s something you have to choose to do,” he said.

As I’ve grown up, I’ve become more ashamed that I used to be one of those people who thought that if you just do what everyone else is doing, everything will work out, and you won’t ever have to employ critical thought.

Ironic that an aspiring engineer would be so opposed to problem solving.

I can’t be sure what everyone else was told, but I grew up being taught that the preferred, almost necessary and absolutely sufficient method of “making it” was to go to school.

But all my life I’ve just been working toward the often heardof but rarely seen next steps.

In elementary school, they prepared me for middle school by teaching me cursive.

In middle school, they prepared me for high school

by teaching me how to be rejected by girls.

In high school, they prepared me for college by… well, I guess we can skip that step.

Those of us who choose to go to college spend the first 20-or-so years of our lives chained down by educational, social and financial rules, yelling for someone to let us free.

And as soon as someone finally comes along, sticks that key in the lock and turns it, we ask, “Where do I go now?”

Unfortunately, I’m still far from having the answer to that question.

If by the end of this semester I have any more of an idea, I’ll make sure to clue you guys in.

Student-run fashion shows offer a more visible representation of students using the alligator samples.

In May 2014, the Marsh of the Catwalk Alligator Design Garment and Product Competition was presented at Catalyst, an annual student fashion show sponsored by the student organization Hemline.

Apparel design graduate student Erin Davis won first place in the product competition for her bowtie designs, which extensively used grade-3 alligator skin.

Two of the ties combined a purple and gold houndstooth pattern with the alligator skin samples, one of which was dyed a light purple. The third bowtie contrasted purple and gold vertical stripes against a rich, chocolate-colored alligator skin.

Davis said the pieces were her first experience working with alligator, and it can be difficult to work with, depending on what grade the skin is and how old it is.

The samples she had for her bowties were from a younger alligator, so they were thinner and easier to manipulate. However, she said she’s worked with skins from older alligators that were hard, rough and not as pliable.

“I would like to incorporate other additions to this project to further promote it,” Davis said.

The grade of the skin is determined by dividing the skin into four quarters and looking to see if there is a blemish, cut or tear in any of the quadrants. If there are imperfections in one quarter, it is given a grade of 2. A grade of 3 is assigned if there are imperfections in more than one quarter.

“We have found that, regardless of those flaws, we can either work around it or embrace it as being sustainable,” McRoberts said.

She said there have been many alumni designers who have put their alligator-inspired pieces into production in their own brands.

“I think it’s very important for the students to know how important it is to repurpose garments, to give them a second life,” McRoberts said. “Anything you can imagine you can do with leather, we can do with alligator.”

Students are implementing alligator skin in various garments, as well as accessories and products such as shoes, coasters and handbags, she said.

Apparel design graduate student Sarah Barnett designed a bucket-style purse made of clear vinyl with alligator at the base that meets the NFL requirements for bringing into a stadium, McRoberts said. A wristlet-style wallet accompanied the purse, she said.

The use of alligator also extends to the realm of men’s fashion, in that a collar or belt loop can be transformed by fusing alligator skin into the design, she said.

McRoberts said her undergraduate class in 1998 was the first to experiment with alligator skin, and since then, she has tried to integrate alligator into her personal designing and teaching.

Chuanlan Liu, associate professor of merchandising, said the Alligator Project is also an effort to be environmentally conscious. She said the market for grade-3 alligator skin has not yet been explored.
