University instructors caught a break at the Sept. 12 LSU Board of Supervisors meeting, when LSU President F. King Alexander announced a new plan to quell instructors’ concerns about job security. Three-year contracts are now available to instructors who have been with the University for six years and receive positive annual evaluations. Instructors previously were able to sign on for only one year at a time. “They are absolutely essential and invaluable to this University, especially those that have been so loyal,” Alexander said of the University’s instructors. Instructors at the University have had a turbulent history with employment stability, receiving termination letters during the 2008 budget crisis warning they may not have their jobs at the end of the year. Jane Cassidy, vice provost for Human Resources and Facilities Management, said there are three types of faculty at the University:

‘UREC on the Geaux’ takes fitness classes to the Parade Ground
BY JAZMINE FOXWORTH jfoxworth@lsureveille.com The UREC is getting students to work out, inside or outside, with the UREC on the Geaux program. Several students lined up Thursday on the Parade Ground to take advantage of free T-shirts, snacks, water bottles, exercise bands and games provided by the UREC. The weekly events aim to introduce students to the UREC’s programs and services. UREC equipment on the Parade Ground was a Student Government initiative proposed by the Experience LSU campaign during the spring 2014 SG elec-
tions. This is the first semester the UREC is providing these services. The events will occur weekly on the Parade Ground or the Residential College Complex lawn until November. The activities are available to all students, and to participate, they must swipe their TigerCard and sign in, just like at the UREC. Wendy Windsor, associate director of programs and outreach for the UREC, said she was inspired to create this program to make the UREC’s services more available to students. “We had a vision of bringing our services to the students,” said Windsor.
Kendra Bayne, assistant director of marketing and promotions for the UREC, also said it was important they connected with students on campus. “It’s really an opportunity for the UREC to reach the students where they are,” said Bayne. International business sophomore Michael Nguyen said the best part of the program is its location. “Instead of being away from campus at the UREC, it’s on the Parade Grounds where everyone is, which is cool,” said Nguyen. All the activities at UREC on the Geaux are available at the
