has a great selection and is not inadequate in any fashion, but this shouldn’t be a determining factor in picking a phone. You can’t download 1 million apps on one phone anyway, which brings me to the next topic: storage. Smartphones have limited storage. Some of that storage must be devoted to the operating system — there’s no way around it. If you don’t regularly delete text messages, old photos and apps you rarely use, it’s a good idea for you to purchase a device with at least 32 GB of storage. More storage does not always equal a larger price tag. For example, the HTC One, with 32 GB, is under $200 with a two-year contract with most carriers.

Also, some smartphones offer storage expansion, meaning users may swap the memory card that comes with the phone for a larger one. This is a favorable option for those concerned about space. Examples of newer phones with this capability include the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Note 3. Two other factors to consider are the processor and RAM. Both of these affect the performance of a device. The iPhone 5S uses Apple’s A7 chip, which produces “about double” the performance of the A6 in the iPhone 5C, according to Laptop Magazine. RAM is what allows a smartphone to switch between and load apps quickly. The SMARTPHONES, see page 7

The Daily Reveille’s guide to choosing a phone for your lifestyle Some users like to have every social networking app possible on their device, and they stay glued to the screen for multiple hours every day. Others may prefer to keep it simple by only using their device as a planner and camera, with one email app and one social networking app. Arguably one of the most annoying words of our generation, the “app” is what popularized smartphones. Apps allow users to do a variety of activities. However, you may not be aware that the Google Play Store officially reached over 1 million apps a year ago, so don’t fall into the trap of thinking an iPhone is the best option for you because of its larger app selection. Women’s quitting success may depend on menstrual cycle The University will officially become smoke free in August, and one researcher is looking for a way to soften the blow for women. MacKenzie Peltier, a University clinical psychology doctoral student, is researching a potential connection between the menstrual cycle and cigarette use. “There are no gender differences in wanting to quit smoking,” Peltier said. “Most people who are nicotine dependent want to quit.” Peltier said her work deals with levels of the hormone progesterone, which is produced at varying levels during the menstrual cycle. According to her hypothesis, women attempting to quit smoking cigarettes during phases with high levels of this hormone are more likely to succeed. Women have a higher relapse rate than men overall, Peltier said, which tends to be explained by pressure to deal with emotions, childcare-related issues, weight loss concerns and hormone fluctuation. Peltier conducts her research by using the Smoking Lapse Behavior model, developed at Yale University. “We want to bring them in when their hormones are peaking,” Peltier said. Study participants come into the University Copeland Smoking and Substance Abuse Clinical Research Lab after not smoking for 18 hours, Peltier said. These participants have their menstrual cycles tracked for several months. At the lab, they undergo motivational therapy for quitting. Finally, the participants are left in a room with a lighter, an ashtray and a cigarette pack of their choice. “Every five minutes, we give
