years old, but the College of Engineering continues to grow each year. The goal of the renovation is to provide more room for the increasing enrollment numbers while providing an adequate learning environment for students. The extension and renovation are a “progressive project,” LaValle said. The current plan is to complete the chemical engineering extension first, and the renovations to Patrick F. Taylor Hall will come shortly after.

Each summer, the University’s campus hosts hundreds of high school students through the Tiger U program, one which comprises residential- and careerfocused camps and has grown to include international participants and an additional session at its Leadership U camp this summer. Executive Director of LSU Continuing Education Doug Weimer said one goal of the summer camp programs is to produce an interactive learning experience through University departments. “The Tiger U programs are a way for high school students to try out campus life, learn in a fun way, and are also a source of recruitment for the University,” Weimer said. Tiger U program coordinator Kandie Saucier said Leadership U, which was created in 2012, has quickly become a large part of the Tiger U program. Leadership U began with 25 participants for a week-long session and has grown to include 40 students, along with a second session in July. These additions were a result of a large number of applications for Leadership U. Tiger U camps have also established partnerships with University teachers and departments, which Saucier said plays a role in the retention of camp participants who apply to the University. Saucier said students who attend the Tiger U residential camps get an early feel for what the University experience is like by living in dormitories and receiving a meal plan. These camps host high school students from across the nation and an international participant from El Salvador this summer. Weimer said the program is important in demonstrating the diversity that the University has to offer.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

School receives second Dow donation Joshua Jackson Staff Writer

The University’s College of Engineering will break ground on a chemical engineering addition to Patrick F. Taylor Hall this November. The LSU Board of Supervisors approved the renovation of Patrick F. Taylor Hall in March. The revamp is funded by the “Breaking New Ground” campaign, which raised $52.5 million that the state plans to match. Dow Chemical Company donated $1 million to the campaign to establish a unit operations lab in

the chemical engineering addition. The lab will be used to conduct experiments for higher-level chemical engineering classes. Last week, Dow donated another $1 million to the College of Engineering. Mimi LaValle, director for communications for the College of Engineering, said this money will help build a student leadership center. “The center will be a place where engineering student organizations will interact and develop leadership skills,” LaValle said. The student leadership center will be located in the renovated

LaValle said the students will work in a team environment on projects and assignments to better prepare the students for the work they will encounter in their job fields. “Engineering, computer science and construction management students will all find that the student leadership center has something to offer them,” LaValle said.
