Short film to screen at Manship Theatre Marcus Rodrigue Staff Writer

The Manship Theatre will host the first free public screening of the short film “DumbAs_” tonight at 7 p.m. The 15-minute film centers on Richie Sappas, who creates a viral video app but soon faces public ramifications after a user dies attempting a stunt. Twenty-oneyear-old Baton Rouge native Ian Ross, who stars as Sappas, said he wanted the screening at the Manship Theatre as a way to give back to the local film community. “I’m really glad I came back because I didn’t realize how much of a network I had back here,” Ross said. “I really wanted to come back

and show my appreciation. I know I left in a hurry, but I’m really glad I’m back.” Ross met director Ashley Bandier at Drexel University, where they both studied film. “DumbAs_” was independently funded but is supported by the Good Company, where Bandier is currently interning. Though “DumbAs_” is a sort of social media satire, Bandier said she just wants the film to be entertaining. “I never want to tell the audience how to feel,” Bandier said. “I love those moments when you kind of squirm because you feel guilty for enjoying a moment, when you feel bad for laughing afterward. I really wanted this film to

be a conversation piece more than anything.” Bandier said she toyed with the film’s concept for a few years before finally writing a script. She first took the idea to Ross, who assisted in redrafting the script’s dialogue and character development. Ross had little prior acting experience, most of which came from performing in high school plays and minor roles in other projects. But all Ross had to do to execute his first lead role was be himself. “There is a lot of me in the character I play, a lot of my history,” Ross said. “We wrote backstories for every character, and I helped a lot with that. What makes the character that I play a real character is actually my life.”

Ross said he’s accustomed to working behind the scenes, but he wasn’t the only one who stepped outside his comfort zone in the making of “DumbAs_.” Bandier functioned as the writer, director, producer and costume designer for the film. “I found my voice in this project,” Bandier said. “I usually just limit myself to art direction, and then take that piece on. But I was so passionate about this story, and I kind of followed my gut with it and ended up taking on all these roles and realized that I’m a story-teller.” Bandier and Ross plan to continue screening “DumbAs_” in PREMIERE, see page 2
