LSU President F. King Alexander said one of the most difficult tasks of his first year at the University was uniting the different factions of Louisiana higher education and working together to accomplish goals.

Alexander spearheaded LSU Day in February, leading a group of system chancellors to lobby for higher education in Washington D.C., a first for the LSU System, whose chancellors typically traveled to D.C. to lobby separately, said Jason Droddy, director of external affairs. Alexander said he plans to make LSU Day an annual tradition, and the system is stronger when the members work together toward goals.

Alexander said for years the universities in the state were not unified when it came to working for improvements and lobbying, and it gave legislators a way out of prioritizing higher education.

Alexander said trust and collaboration needed to be brought to Louisiana higher education.

classes in January due to the inclement weather were trying for Alexander as well, he said. He feared students would attempt to drive back to their hometowns through the ice storms if they didn’t have class.

Other Louisiana universities were waiting to decide whether to cancel class based on the University’s decisions. The final decision regarding classes was made when the state police closed the bridges because faculty could not make it to campus, Alexander said.

Alexander took on the dual role of University Chancellor and LSU System President a year ago, after approval from the Board of Supervisors. The Advocate and NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune sued the University at the time of Alexander’s hiring because it failed to release the names of other candidates for Alexander’s position. The media outlets maintained the candidate lists were public records.

Baton Rouge District Judge Janice Clark ruled in favor of the media outlets in April 2013,

stating the documents regarding others considered for the position fell into the category of public record. The University has since appealed the decision and appeared in the court for oral argument on April 1. A decision on the matter will be heard in the coming weeks.

Kevin Cope, Faculty Senate president, said Alexander had to spend his first year getting to know the LSU System and the Board of Supervisors he inherited, comprising 15 appointees of Gov. Bobby Jindal. Cope said Alexander had success working with legislators to improve retirement and funding despite having to move forward gradually and with caution.

In the months since Alexander moved into office, the LSU System underwent changes in its organization as a part of LSU2015, a process to make the University and system more efficient and globally competitive.

the recently approved realignment of the Paul M. Hebert Law Center and the flagship campus and the hiring of Vice President for Finance and Administration Daniel Layzell, who advises finances at the University and system level.

In addition to system changes, Alexander’s first year saw salary increases of about 4 percent for most University departments.

The funding for raises came from various sources including tuition from increased enrollment, position vacancies and from closing certain scholarships, said Robert Kuhn, former interim CFO. Cope said Alexander’s first year has seen successes, but he may benefit from showing more of his personality, which would give the University more of a sense of direction. Cope said while lobbying is good for the LSU System, it may make it seem like the campuses have been outsourced.

ResLife Numerous candidates vie for 6th District addresses voyeurism incidents Quint Forgey Staff Writer

Following a tumultuous month in which a spike in voyeurism and “peeping Tom” crimes resulted in four arrests, the LSU Department of Residential Life is reviewing its policies and procedures to ensure the security of residents.

Steve Waller, executive director of ResLife, said during their regularly scheduled meeting Friday, there was discussion of reviewing visitation policies and procedures in light of the recent events.

Two incidences of voyeurism took place in Herget Hall, a residential college, while the peeping Tom took place in Middleton Library, a building not operated by ResLife.

Waller said the main focus of their reviews will be on requirements for registering visitors. Waller added that the University is in “pretty good shape compared to other SEC schools” when it comes to physical security.

The LSU Police Department typically has off-duty officers patrolling the areas around the residential halls at night.

Waller said ResLife will also review its own policies and processes, specifically those that communicate with students and how to stay safe. Ultimately, ResLife is a community where everyone is responsible, Waller said, so it is essential for students to speak up when they see something suspicious, in line with the “If You See Something Say Something!” campaign.

Because ResLife is a true auxiliary and takes all its money from students’ rent, there is no possibility of student fees being reallocated to ResLife for increased security. However, Waller said his department may reallocate funds internally to buy supplies or materials to create a better policy or process for visitation.

The first instance of voyeurism took place in March when two students filmed two others having a consensual sexual encounter in Herget. The two then uploaded the video to Instagram before being arrested for voyeurism by LSUPD. The second incident took place late April when a registered sex offender from Marlin, Texas, Mystyr Terry Stewart Jr., was found in the women’s showers of Herget recording a female resident. LSUPD spokesman Capt. Cory Lalonde said he was likely the guest of a female resident also from Marlin, Kayla Nicole Crear.

Both Stewart and Crear were arrested and booked on voyeurism charges.

After Republican Bill Cassidy announced he would challenge Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu for her office later this year, a handful of hopeful politicos began scrambling for his 6th District seat in the House of Representatives.

The first of the contenders to announce was 28-year-old University alum Republican Paul Dietzel II, who announced his candidacy in May 2013 and quickly gained esteem for his impressive fundraising operation.

Dietzel’s official “2014

Campaign Kickoff” in January debuted his endorsement by former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain.

Several other competitors to Dietzel slowly began to emerge, including well-known Republican State Sen. Dan Claitor.

Claitor, who officially announced his candidacy in December, presented the first real challenge to Dietzel in the conservative 6th District.

Before March 17, there were at least eight Republican contenders with only one Democrat.

However, on St. Patrick’s Day, one of Louisiana’s most

infamous politicians significantly altered the otherwise ultra-conservative race.

Edwin Edwards, former Democratic governor and convicted felon, announced his candidacy and attracted a storm of national media attention to the fight for Louisiana’s 6th District, posing a worthy Democratic challenger to the cluttered Republican field.

Despite Dietzel’s financial dominance in the race, campaign contributions reported for the first few months of the year brought Republican candidate Garret Graves into the limelight.

Graves, the former chair of the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, reported raising $312,000 in on-hand spending money, while Dietzel only reported having $70,000 on-hand.

As the race progresses, the possibility remains that Louisiana’s next representative could be either the youngest serving member of Congress or a convicted felon already infamous in the realm of national politics.

SG passes initiatives, welcomes new leaders Jacquelyn Masse Contributing Writer

Over the course of the semester, Student Government elected two new leaders and passed several initiatives that will take effect next semester.

Former SG President John Woodard and Vice President Taylor Parks closed out their term and welcomed in President Clay Tufts and Vice President Taylor Lambert.

Woodard and Parks said they enjoyed their experience during office.

“Lots of people say they would never [be SG president] again, but I would do it in a heartbeat,” Woodard said.

Woodard and Parks passed several initiatives they promised on their push cards. They created online study reservation room systems, an internship liaison and an Academic Fair for students who want to learn about different senior colleges.

Several of their initiatives are still in progress like the “Tailored Tiger” prep shop. It will be in the new Career Center and will have business attire for rent.

The newly elected president and vice president are excited to start working on their initiatives.

“I’m looking forward to interacting with students and seeing how the initiatives benefit them,” Tufts said.

Lambert and Tufts are working on new initiatives like renovating the library. They also want to have a fitness and wellness week program aimed at students, called Geaux Move. They are discussing having physical activity events and seminars on healthy eating.

SG Senate also passed legislation that will affect the fall semester.

They passed a $36,500 finance bill that aims to improve campus safety. The money will go toward an LSU emergency application for smartphones through the LSU’s Police Department. The application will allow

Analytical colleges get new Campus hopes to be facilities, increased funding more user-friendly Engineering raises $100 million Panya Kroun Contributing Writer

In an era increasingly defined by the development of new sustainable technologies and practices, the University has expanded its analytical programs to keep its graduates competitive in local and global job markets.

The College of Engineering raised more than $100 million in public and private funds to renovate Patrick F. Taylor Hall and to expand its chemical engineering facilities. Private donors included MMR, Entergy, Phillips 66, BASF, FLUOR and Turner Industries. The state matched these funds dollar-for-dollar.

Engineering students took advantage of their expanding program and applied the skills they learned in class to develop real solutions to real problems.

Students built canoes, cars run by chemical reactions and airplanes to represent the University in global contests. Seniors built door breakers, mobile targeting systems and submarines to demonstrate their mastery of the curriculum.

In April, the Coastal Sustainability Studio was awarded a

$50,000 award by the W.M. Keck Foundation for the establishment of a new cross-disciplinary program that will prepare students for careers in fighting coastal challenges and developing ways to sustain both economic and ecological productivity in coastal environments.

The College of Science also received funding for the expansion of its research technologies.

In January, the W.M. Keck Foundation awarded chemistry professor Les Butler $500,000 for the construction of an advanced X-ray machine that will be available for use by researchers throughout the University. Its capabilities nearly mirror those of multi-million dollar pieces of equipment in the Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices.

Additionally, the University’s Earth Scan Lab received an important upgrade in February that reduces the hours it once took to process satellite data to minutes. ESL’s satellites record images of ocean eddies that can be used to locate oil activity throughout the Gulf Coast. The Earth Scan Lab is maintained by the Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences at the School of Coast and Environment.

The LSU Louisiana Business and Technology Center hosted

a Student Incubator Venture Challenge that concluded in April to award student entrepreneurs with both monetary rewards and financial advice. The center also facilitated the Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Foundation’s transformation into the Emerge Center for Communication, Behavior and Development in Innovation Park.

The University’s Agricultural Center continued to commit itself to economic growth and ecological stability. Its Food Incubator helped businesses develop new food products, and researchers found new uses for existing foods like resistant starches, which were found to aid in combating diabetes.

With all of these new innovations and expansions, graduates of the analytical college are well-equipped to address the scientific and technological challenges of the 21st century.

Construction and maintenance on campus continue to mold the vision of a more cohesive, user-friendly campus.

Campus projects this semester included an initiative for a better road system, new buildings and deferred maintenance.

The Daily Reveille reported in March the University’s plan to add safer sidewalks to Highland Road.

This has already begun with the Barnes and Noble courtyard separating pedestrians from traffic, complete with LED lighting, said Dennis Mitchell, assistant director of master planning and site development for Facility Services.

Mitchell said this model will eventually extend from West Chimes Street to the south end of campus.

A roundabout initiative also serves as a major improvement planned for campus, Mitchell said.

The roundabout on Dalrymple Drive, which Mitchell said has improved the flow of traffic around the University Laboratory School, was added at the beginning of the semester, Mitchell said. Another roundabout is planned for Nicholson Extension and Highland Road, enabling left turns on to Highland Road from Nicholson Extension.

The Daily Reveille reported in January the construction on various new buildings on campus.

Two new residence halls under

construction near Kirby Smith Hall will open starting in fall 2015, said Roger Husser, director of planning, design and construction for Facility Services, in January.

Husser said the Animal and Food Science Laboratory Building on Forestry Lane will mainly house research. The building is complete but not yet occupied.

Renovations to existing buildings also continue. The $8 million Student Union renovation is slated for completion by next fall, Husser said.

Expansion and renovation of the UREC is slated to begin late spring, Husser said, and the lot between the UREC and the Lod Cook Alumni Center is currently closed off for construction.

The Daily Reveille reported in February details of Tiger Stadium’s south end expansion. Scheduled for completion Sept. 6, the first gameday of fall 2014, the expansion will add 3,000 club seats and 1,500 general admission seats to the stadium, said Emmett David, senior associate director of Tiger Athletics.

Deferred maintenance appeared this semester in the form of asbestos in the steam tunnels under campus.

The Daily Reveille reported in January a project by Facility Services to clean the tunnels of asbestos within three weeks.

Minority groups seeing progress in BR Michael Tarver Contributing Writer

There have been many examples this semester of progress in minority representation on campus, specifically in the LGBT, AfricanAmerican and Asian-American student communities.

Bills were introduced in this year’s Louisiana legislative session geared toward the equal and fair treatment of LGBT people, though the termination of these bills led to disappointments among the LGBT community. Overall, the simple introduction of the bills were signs of change and progress in LGBT equality.

Such bills include the Crimes Against Nature Repeal, the Louisiana Open Housing Act and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Michael Beyer, Spectrum panel coordinator, told The Daily Reveille in April the termination of the Crimes Against Nature Repeal was unexpected, but not necessarily a prediction for the success of future bills.

“I think it’s hard to vote on sex, and there were so many different misconceptions going around,” Beyer said.

The Asian American Ambas-

sadors hosted their first Cultural Heritage Showcase this semester in an attempt to educate the student population about Asian culture and make their presence known on campus. The showcase was completely student-run, though sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Catherine Nguyen, mass communication sophomore and public relations advocate for AAA, was a performer and one of the masters of ceremonies for the showcase. She said the small size and newborn nature of AAA will not stop the organization from growing and expanding.

“Even though we are new, it doesn’t mean we can’t do big events,” Nguyen said. “It takes a team effort, and we always work as a team.”

The African-American and African communities on campus were represented this semester with extensive Black History Month celebrations and African Week festivities.

Black History Month featured numerous lecture series and events focused on entertaining, educating and enlightening the student population.

to evolve the approach of learning African-American history on campus during Black History Month.

“While in 2014, the issue of civil rights is very different from in the past, we still need to remember and learn from the past to not repeat the same mistakes,” Purcell said.

While the African-American community celebrated an important month of history, the African Student Organization made their own handprint on campus with their African Week events.

President Biola Ige said in March she hopes to leave a legacy of cultivating awareness when she graduates because her experiences with the International Cultural Center and the African student population on campus have had such a major effect on her life while at the University.

“You’ll be surprised how many people will celebrate with you,” Ige said.

Super Six appearances, and it picked up right where it left off in 2013. The Tigers posted the highest season-opening score in school history with a 197.200 against Centenary and ripped off a four-meet win streak after falling at Georgia the following week.

One of LSU’s signature performances came on Feb. 9 in a 197.650197.325 win at then-No. 2 Oklahoma, which won a share of the national championship.

The Tigers set the program-high score with a 197.875 at the Metroplex Challenge six days later. Courville recorded a perfect 10 on vault and junior all-arounder Lloimincia Hall turned in one of her three perfect scores

The LSU football team entered spring with many areas to address on both sides of the ball before the start of the 2014 football season.

Most notably, the Tigers hoped to fill gaps left by an offense, and quarterback Zach Mettenberger, which saw many entering the NFL draft after graduating.

The Tigers’ spring practice turned into a competition between sophomore Anthony Jennings and freshman Brandon Harris. The more experienced Jennings received most of the first-team reps throughout spring, but he struggled during the National L-Club Spring Game on April 5.

He completed 9-of-17 passes for 157 yards, one touchdown and a pair of interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.

Jennings’ uninspiring spring game performance gave Harris an opportunity to prove he could make an immediate change. Harris, who was one of only two true freshmen partaking in LSU’s 2014 spring practice, turned heads in the spring with his ability to elude the same pressure Jennings struggled against.

In the spring game, Harris led all rushers with 77 yards and a touchdown. He also found success through the air, compiling 195 yards and three passing scores.

Despite Harris’ more impressive game, LSU coach Les Miles said he wanted more time to determine the starter.

The LSU gymnastics team did what it set out to do in 2014.

The Tigers (26-9, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) broke their team scoring record three times and notched the program’s highest finish in school history by placing third at the NCAA Super Six Championship.

Junior all-arounder Rheagan Courville captured her second-straight national vault title, and coach D-D Breaux won National Coach of the Year recognition while associate head coach Jay Clark and assistant coach Bob Moore earned National Assistant Coach of the Year honors.

“This team and the coaching staff set some goals, and I think that they really lived up to everything we asked them to do,” Breaux said. “They stayed in the process, they created consistency for themselves.”

With expectations higher and a clear talent upgrade from year one, Johnny Jones’ second season went much like his first.

A marquee home win was overshadowed by befuddling road losses. Junior forward Johnny O’Bryant III struggled with foul trouble all season. And consistency was nowhere to be found.

The Tigers finished 20-14 and 9-9 in the Southeastern Conference and won their first postseason game since 2008-09, a 71-63 victory against San Francisco in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.

Although on paper the season was only a one-win upgrade, Jones termed the season a success, given the hurdles and youth the team had on the floor most of the time.

“The team that we had, the young guys that we had in our program, you’d have to certainly think that we’ve moved forward,” Jones said. “At times, we had three freshmen out there on the floor in terms

of the starting lineup. When you talk about progression, you’d have to think that we’ve had the ability to take these kinds of steps.”

An 87-82 win against eventual NCAA runner-up Kentucky while Winter Storm Leon crippled Baton Rouge gave the Tigers’ faint NCAA tournament hopes a jolt in mid-January, but they lost three of their next five to watch those quickly fade.

Tigers score big on LSU improves as season closes National Signing Day Lawrence Barreca Staff Writer

Whatever shortcomings the 2013 football season wrought, LSU coach Les Miles did his best to make up for it on the recruiting trail this season.

LSU produced a consensus No. 2 recruiting class this year, hauling in 21 signees on the Feb. 5 National Signing Day after losing six underclassmen to the draft.

“This class is a must,” Miles said. “It’s an opportunity to replace guys that have graduated from college and gone on to business or gone on to the NFL, to replace those when they’re juniors, and that in three years have gone on to the NFL.” The Tigers signed four 5-star athletes and 13 4-stars, according to Scout.com rankings — none bigger than the No. 1 overall player in the country, New Orleans’ own Leonard Fournette out of Saint Augustine High School.

Fournette announced his decision to join “The University of LSU” in early January at the Under Armour All American Game along with the likes of 5-star safety Jamal Adams.

Miles set his expectations for Fournette high following his signing, saying he wouldn’t be surprised if the running back follows in the footsteps of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel or Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston and take home a Heisman Trophy after his freshman season. “[Fournette] has all the natural skill and ability that there is,” Miles said. “He’d be miserable if somebody didn’t have expectations that he’d have a great

freshman year.”

While the early commitment of Fournette certainly took a significant portion of pressure off LSU’s Signing Day festivities, the Tigers still had work to do.

John Curtis High School 5-star wide receiver Malachi Dupre waited until the last minute to declare his loyalties to Miles’ program in what was considered to be a dead heat between going to Baton Rouge or joining teammate Kenny Young at UCLA. Dupre added to the drama when he tweeted out “No hurt feelings strictly business” the day before signing day.

“It was a great situation to be in, but at the same time, I don’t think people understand how hard it is because each opportunity is so great, and I was blessed to have all of them,” Dupre told The Daily Reveille in February.

“Not too many people have that chance.”

Looking ahead to 2015, LSU jumped to an early lead after securing 247sports’ No. 1 ranking for next year just weeks after signing day.

The Tigers have since fallen to the No. 6 spot as other teams rein in commitments, but LSU is still the only school with two 5-star players in cornerback Kevin Toliver and offensive tackle Maea Teuhema.

“In terms of numbers, [LSU] is average,” said TigerSportsDigest.com recruiting expert Hunter Paniagua in February. “But in terms of quality of players, they’re definitely ahead of the game. It’s definitely a good start, and they’re only going to add more as time goes on.”

Prior to the 2014 campaign, LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri constantly referred to his upcoming schedule as a grind that would test his team to its very core.

The Tigers have found themselves at both ends of the emotional spectrum – they endured a four-game losing streak after falling to Tulane and getting swept at Florida, but they rebounded the weekend after, winning seven in a row and taking two Southeastern Conference series against Mississippi State and Arkansas.

Now with only a few conference series remaining, including one more in Alex Box Stadium against Alabama, the Tigers continue to search for the perfect formula that will land them back in Omaha, Neb., for the 2014 College World Series.

As the weather has warmed up in Baton Rouge, so have the LSU bats – the Tigers experienced a cold spell following a 13-inning tie against Georgia on March 23.

Since then, the LSU bats have roared back, scoring 20 runs in a three-game series against Tennessee and scoring nine late runs in a comeback victory against Alcorn State.

“I thought, for a consistent period of time, [the Tennessee series] was as well as we’ve swung the bats all year,” Mainieri said.

“We got runners on, we advanced them and we had a lot of clutch hits. When we needed to rally, we did.”

That is the sort of production LSU will need if it wants to continue to compete in a tight SEC race.

Mainieri has received several sparks from unexpected sources, one of them being freshman outfielder Jake Fraley.

Fraley has forced himself into the everyday lineup, moving into the No. 5 spot and batting .348 with two home runs, 24 RBIs and a .408 on-base percentage.

LSU will need every bat it can get with the difficult road ahead.

Both Ole Miss and Alabama lead the SEC West, and LSU will take on the Crimson Tide in Baton Rouge in a three-game series starting on Friday.

The Tigers continue to fight for the opportunity to host a Regional contest in Alex Box Stadium, but their focus remains on coming out on top in the conference.

Both SEC West leaders rank ahead of LSU in overall batting statistics, and Ole Miss is second in the conference with a .308 team batting average. Alabama ranks sixth in the conference with a .281 mark.

Mainieri said his team will need to keep up with the explosive rival offenses.

“As the weather is warming up and we’re going down the stretch run, honestly I think Texas A&M, Alabama and Auburn all swing the bats well, too,” Mainieri said. “We’re going to have to be able to meet them and match them punch-for-punch.”

Team finishes season strong despite ups and downs Morgan Prewitt Sports Contributor

We fight!” junior outfielder A.J. Andrews quoted Red Wings, explaining her interpretation of the LSU softball team’s 2014 mantra of “Locked In” during Media Day before the 2014 season.

This mantra comes from the team’s military-inspired focus on achieving the goal of reaching the Women’s College World Series and avenging its failure to reach the WCWS in 2013.

But as the season progressed, “Locked In” came to represent the mindset of the team as the Tigers plowed through the ups and downs of the second-toughest schedule in the nation.

Despite returning a lineup that included the 2013 Co-Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year Bianka Bell at shortstop and 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Andrews, the Tigers still entered the season with a huge question mark in the pitching circle. Could the rotation replace 2013 NFCA All-American pitcher Rachele Fico?

The rotation, led by freshman Baylee Corbello — ranked 12th in the SEC with a 2.70 ERA — and

senior Ashley Czechner, has answered the call and carried the Tigers to a No. 25 ranking.

In her first two collegiate starts, Corbello recorded 23 strikeouts, earning her SEC Freshman of the Week honors the first week of the season.

However, in LSU’s first three conference series, the rotation struggled, allowing 42 earned runs while surrendering 47 walks.

After being swept in a conference series by then-No. 7 Alabama, Czechner took over the Friday night starting position from Corbello.

The Tigers have won all four conference series since, and Czechner, 3-1 on Friday night starts, is allowing only 12 walks while recording 25 strikeouts.

Limiting walks and other free passes will be key for the Tigers looking forward to postseason play.

The rotation has allowed 203 combined walks while recording only 194 strikeouts.

Free passes have been a major problem for the Tigers in key series against top teams this year. For LSU to succeed in postseason play, limiting the opportunities of opponents should give the Tigers a better chance to win close matchups.

Compared to 2013, the difference in the Tigers’ power offense is

staggering. In 58 games in 2013, the entire team hit 40 home runs. This season, LSU already has 42 home runs from only six players in the lineup.

For the second straight season, a freshman leads the team in home runs and RBIs. Last season, Bell led the Tigers with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs. In 2014, catcher Sahvanna Jaquish took on this role, producing a team-leading 12 home runs and 44 RBIs. In conference play, Jaquish has consistently produced against some of the best pitchers in the nation, batting .410 with six home runs and

16 RBIs. “I try to focus on the game and the team and the score of the game instead of just myself,” Jaquish said.

“It’s fun trotting around the bases.”

LSU combined its increase in power in the lineup with its returning arsenal of speed. In 2013, the Tigers finished the season sixth in the SEC with 88 stolen bases. This season, LSU stands second in the conference with 94 stolen bases on the year. Andrews is second individually in the SEC with 34 steal on 35 attempts.

In the past four conference series, the Tigers have a 9-3 record in 12 games. During this stretch, LSU

has scored at least five runs in eight of these matchups.

The lineup seems to have clicked just in time for postseason play.

“I think the team as a whole is swinging with a lot of confidence and having quality at-bats,” said LSU coach Beth Torina. “They are picking pitches that they want to hit, and I think they are being really patient and smart at the plate.”

Up-and-down season ends with Sweet 16 appearance Tommy Romanach Sports Contributor

The LSU women’s basketball team’s 2014 season has to be told in three different parts. First came a rise to prominence, then a tumultuous fall from grace and finally a resurrection of the team in the NCAA tournament.

The Lady Tigers entered the season ranked No. 15, but failed in their first test of the season in an 88-67 loss to Louisville in the semifinals of the Preseason Women’s NIT. They stayed with the Cardinals for most of the game, but fell apart when the Cardinals went on a 21-0 run in the second half.

LSU would recover, winning 10 of its next 11 games, including the 2013 Barclays Center Women’s Invitational in Brooklyn. But no victory was bigger than its 80-77 victory against then-No. 5 Tennessee on Jan. 2 in Knoxville.

The loss snapped a sevengame losing streak to Tennessee that went back to 2009, and it was head coach Nikki Caldwell’s first victory against her alma mater. Sophomore guard Danielle Ballard tallied a then-career-high 25 points, and junior guard DaShawn Harden scored 17 coming off the bench.

“I can’t say enough about how proud I am of this group,” Caldwell said after the win. “They really just laid it out on the line and were courageous to come in this tough

environment and come away with a win.”

But as the Lady Tigers went deeper into Southeastern Conference play, the team’s offensive production began to slow down and the losses began to come. Losses to Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Kentucky dragged LSU down, but it still had a chance to win the conference entering the season’s home stretch.

The team then experienced its lowest point of the season, a sixgame losing streak that dropped LSU to the middle of the SEC standings. The team’s main weakness was its defense, allowing more than 70 points in five of its six games.

The fall from grace gave the Lady Tigers a No. 7 seed in the NCAA tournament. The team responded in the first round with its largest offensive outburst of the season in a 98-78 blowout against Georgia Tech.

In its second round game against West Virginia, LSU was already without freshman guard Raigyne Moncrief and lost senior point guard Jeanne Kenney in the first half due to a concussion. But the rest of the team stayed resilient, going on a 20-4 run to end the game and winning, 76-67.

“This is one of those moments that as a fan and a coach, that you honestly can say this is one of the hardest fought games between two very good teams,” Caldwell said.

The Lady Tigers would get a

rematch against Louisville in the Sweet 16, but this time without Kenney and Moncrief. The results were similar to the loss at the start of the season, losing 73-47 and ending their year.

Senior forward Theresa Plaisance was the Lady Tigers star this season, leading the team in both points and rebounds for the second season in a row. Plaisance also won All-SEC First Team honors for the second consecutive season.

Plaisance now has set her eyes on the pros after the Tulsa Shock selected her with the 27th pick overall in the WNBA draft.

Next season, the Lady Tigers will try to replace Kenney, Plaisance and senior forward Shanece McKinney with Ballard and Moncrief becoming the new leaders of the team.

The team also expects improvement from freshman guards Jasmine Rhodes and Rina Hill.

“We’re going to play to our

personnel every year. My philosophy is still going to be the same no matter if you’re 6’4 or 6’1,” Caldwell said. “… I look for our team to be more up and down next year.”

O’Bryant, who posted eight double-doubles, garnered first team All-SEC honors for the second year in a row. He announced his intentions to enter the NBA draft after the season, leaving a void in the middle for Jones’ 2014 squad.

Jones does return the freshmen duo of Jordan Mickey and Jarell Martin, both of whom garnered All-SEC Freshman Team honors in their first season in Baton Rouge.

Mickey, who announced his decision to return for his sophomore season on April 23, was also named to the All-SEC Defensive Team after blocking an SEC-leading 96 shots.

Martin was hindered by an early season ankle sprain, but when healthy during the SEC gauntlet, averaged 11.4 points per game in conference.

Along with the rising sophomore sensations, LSU will add the services of scrappy transfer guard Keith Hornsby, who was ineligible this season under NCAA transfer rules.

Add in consensus top-70 center Elbert Robinson and junior college transfer Josh Gray, and Jones’ Tigers will have a different look next season, all the while searching for the veteran leadership vacated by the graduation of Andre Stringer and Shavon Coleman.

“I think it’s really important when you look at Jarell and Jordan. … I know the important roles that they played on their high school teams to get them to championship levels and expect them to step up, take more of that leadership role with our team,” Jones said.

“I think their leadership is going to be very important for our team moving forward.”

Though LSU suffered a halfpoint defeat at eventual co-national champion Florida the week after the Metroplex Challenge, the Feb. 28 showdown with Missouri showed just how sharp the Tigers were.

LSU, which rose to No. 1 after the Metroplex meet, broke the school record again with a 198.050 against Missouri before handily defeating North Carolina State and Kentucky to close the regular season. But the Tigers couldn’t carry that momentum into the SEC championship, instead finishing third with a 197.325 team score.

“We’re going to let the competition continue and see how this thing plays out,” Miles said. “There’s some real optimism surrounding the [quarterback] position right now.”

Miles was also hoping to find replacements at other key skill positions this spring. Aside from Mettenberger, the Tigers lost his two favorite targets, wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, to the NFL draft.

To replace the pair of wideouts, LSU signed some of the nation’s top receiver prospect, including No. 1 receiver Malachi Dupre. But senior fullback Connor Neighbors wasn’t quick to give any praises to a player who is yet to practice.

“I don’t ever buy in to hype,” Neighbors said. “If you’re good, then you have to come in here and prove it like everyone else.”

Boasting the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA tournament, LSU returned to top form two weeks later and shattered the scoring record with a 198.325 to clinch the Baton Rouge Regional and a spot in the

game. In the annual scrimmage, Dural had five catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Tigers in all categories.

Aside from Dural, it was the tight ends and backs that showed they could be reliable targets for whomever is the Tigers’ quarterback next fall. Sophomore tight end DeSean Smith and Neighbors both hauled in three passes and a touchdown reception. Senior running back Kenny Hilliard added a 42-yard reception, and tight ends Logan Stokes and Dillon Gordon both had catches of more than 20 yards.

Smith, whose 45 yards were second only to Dural’s 130, said the offense could be dangerous if the backs and tight ends remain a consistent presence in the passing game because it presents a variety of options downfield.

“Look at what it did having tight ends involved [in the spring game],” Smith said. “Dural had one-on-one coverage and wasn’t doubled down the field. It’s either cover the tight ends or cover Dural

or whoever’s out there, so I think it could be hard for defenses.”

The defense was also searching for options this spring, especially up front after the departures of defensive tackles Anthony Johnson and Ego Ferguson to the 2014 NFL draft. After the conclusion of spring practice, it appears sophomore Christian LaCouture will man the middle of the Tigers’ defensive line.

“Competition brings out the best in everybody, and it’s the next man up here at LSU,” LaCouture said. “Whether you’re a freshman or a senior, you have to produce, and that’s my goal.”

LSU also had to replace senior defensive end Jordan Allen, who transferred to Arizona last Wednesday. But junior defensive end Danielle Hunter racked up two sacks in LSU’s spring game, supporting LaCouture’s claim of next man up.

national semifinals. That mark tied Florida for the highest team score in the country in 2014.

The Tigers notched their second-lowest score of the season in the semifinal round, but their 197.100 was good enough for third place and a spot in the Super Six. LSU bounced back to claim third place in the national championship, and Courville’s 9.9750 vault score tied Arkansas’ Katherine Grable for the title.

“It was the best season so far, hands down,” Courville said. “I can’t think of ending it any other than we did other than being No. 1. We really accomplished every goal we had this season, and I think that’s the most important thing right now.”

Sophomore Kendell Beckwith transitioned to linebacker after playing defensive end last season, and juniors Lamar Louis and Kwon Alexander switched to opposite sides of the unit.

According to Louis, the linebackers’ goal for next season is to lead the defense back to the upper echelon of collegiate defenses.

“If we’re just a top 20, top 15 defense, that’s a down year for LSU,” Louis said. “We have to get back to the top, and that’s the main thing we’re looking at.”

Future generations must accept changing social norms NO WAY JOSE Jose Bastidas Columnist Throughout this semester, I wrote about letting go of this flawed society.

I focused the majority of my columns on advocating for minorities’ fair treatment and commanded respect for our rights.

From the subtle abuse of different groups through microaggressions, to the injustice done by the Louisiana Legislature in its failure to recognize same-sex unions I’ve attempted to bring to light the reasons treatment of minorities in modern society still has a long way to go.

It’s time for LSU students to forget this limited scope of what makes a person “normal,” and the way to do this is to accept people’s differences.

My fellow columnist, Jana King, wrote a three-part series on racism this semester that explored the topic from a detailed perspective.

As a minority, I believe, like King said in her first column of the series, racism has reduced its instances of hatred and violence.

However, racism is still engraved in society in the sense that we are so focused on detailing one another’s differences that we forget that, despite the color of our skin, we are all human beings.

The key to ending of racism in this world will never be by subconsciously segregating ourselves into our own groups.

At LSU, ceremonies like the robing ceremony and the Lavender graduation are examples of progress because the University is acknowledging different cultures.

But why should culture be celebrated in another ceremony?

Diversity shouldn’t be seen as a reason to separate social groups.

We should all be proud of our cultures and ethnicities, but I don’t think holding on to these ideals should stop us from interacting with people who share different beliefs, have different skin tones or happen to like people of the same sex.

The problem begins and ends with people.

America is flawed; the people who are currently in charge of our state and federal governments have an antiquated view of what is acceptable.

While slavery disappeared many decades ago, there are still laws — as well as human mentalities — preventing the peaceful interaction among people of all races, genders and sexual orientations.

As future graduates and the people getting ready to take over, college students have the obligation to let go of the “what is normal” mentality for the U.S. to truly say racism is over.

Another fellow columnist, Justin Stafford, wrote Wednesday agreeing with the affirmative action ban in Michigan, claiming it is no longer necessary in this day and age; because equality does not mean “we all get the same things,” but “we all get the same opportunities.”

However, society is not ready to get rid of what forces them to include minorities.

America will recover from its racist roots someday, just not yet.

As long as people keep poisoning young minds with ideas of separating the races, keeping same-sex couples as social pariahs and sticking to an antiquated system of social order, people won’t be able to live amicably

LSU’s most influential THE BOX DOES NOT EXIST JANA KING Columnist Time Magazine released its annual list of the 100 most influential people last week, and the reactions have been mixed.

While some are ecstatic to have individuals such as “Orange is the New Black” creator Jenji

Kohan listed alongside icons like Beyonce, others are angry to see oppressive figures like Russian president Vladimir Putin also on the list.

But this look into the spectrum of human goodness is critical when evaluating those who influence our world.

College is the first time many of us experience a community we cultivate rather than one that is chosen for us. It can be difficult to navigate between the good and

In late March, minimalistic Christian propaganda began appearing around campus, leaving many students curious about who Adam was and what everyone agreed with. The few weeks campus was torn in a religious war over the Christianity awareness were some of the more confusing weeks of this semester, leading to kinesiology senior Adam Roethele’s debut as the famous Adam.

Perhaps one of the most overstated fashion trends in University history, the orange “I Agree With Adam” shirts ultimately amounted to little more than visual pollution. That and fuel for debates across all platforms.

Though the two teens were not LSU students, they managed to serve up more of a disappointing, anti-climactic mess than the Starbucks barista who gets your order wrong on the first day of exams. Chavalitlekakha and Brocato were arrested after admitting responsibility for the “suspicious package” that caused Thomas Boyd Hall to be evacuated in early April.

While it may seem like nothing more than a harmless prank, these two tested the emergency response policies and LSU Alert systems, which, luckily, were up to par.

Listing Putin alongside Kohan allows us to delve greater into the related themes of the two influences. While Putin is known for his outrageously oppressive beliefs regarding homosexuals, Kohan writes complex and humbling homosexual characters.

Though we would like to believe that Putin is an entirely bad human being, it’s important

to remember that criticism of an individual does little to change our world. We as a society benefit most from a critical analysis of our systems and cultural ideals, rather than criticism of an individual.

I have compiled my own list of influential people, a list of individuals in the LSU community who I think made a difference this semester. But as you read it, keep in mind that the ones who made mistakes were

WOODARD & TAYLOR 5 JOHN PARKS

Though the Unite LSU ticket faced scandal during the 2013 Student Government election, Woodard and Parks followed through with several initiatives promised to the student body. The most impressive being the resolution passed that allows students to specify a preferred name for University records.

University LGBT organization, Spectrum, supported the bill as it helps to protect the privacy of transgendered students who could otherwise be outed by first day roll calls. A student government working to ease anxieties for all students is an effective student government. I applaud Woodard and Parks for their progressiveness.

2 THE LSU HAMBURGLARS

After months of investigation, LSUPD arrested several employees of the McDonald’s in the Student Union in March. These hamburglars were part of a Tiger Card scheme that resulted in the theft of a reported $30,000 from LSU students.

Those students who fell victim to the scheme quickly turned from infuriated to celebratory when they were reimbursed by LSU Dining. Some even felt a little shame as they realized how often they would’ve had to dine at the burger and fries establishment to rack up the $100-plus deposit.

In late February, the LSU Emergency Text Messaging system notified the LSU community of an attempted abduction near Patrick F. Taylor Hall, by a black male with no facial hair and a black van. It took all of two days for Wolfe to admit her allegations were false.

This hoax sparked several racially charged debates over the criminal justice system and racial profiling, including my own series of columns regarding the myth of a post-racial America.

University art students and faculty executed a funeral-themed march in protest of the deteriorating 90-year-old Studio Arts Building. The Twitter hashtag #schoolofdecay quickly went viral as the event unfolded.

For reminding us that we can make a difference and not passive participants in our University, the art students and faculty members take the No. 1 spot for most influential persons in the LSU community.

University makes changes, updates technology system Renee Barrow Contributing Writer

Technology changes around campus are imminent.

The Student Technology Fee Oversight Committee formally decided at a Feb. 20 meeting to move forward with computer lab closures on Middleton Library’s second floor and in the Student Union.

According to multiple sources, including newly appointed STFOC chairperson and vice provost for Human Resources and Facilities Management Jane Cassidy, this decision was made in light of an online survey conducted last semester.

“I’m hopeful their take on this is correct,” Elaine Smyth, interim dean of libraries told The Daily Reveille in April. “They have to make those hard financial decisions about where to put resources.”

Thomas Rodgers, Student Government Graduate Council President, said the survey was emailed campus-wide and asked students questions about how they use technology and technology-related services at the University.

The survey had 2,339 participants, 90 percent of which reported owning laptops, 80 percent reported owned a smartphone and 30 percent had tablets.

The soon-to-be-open space in Middleton Library will be repurposed as a study area, where students will have access to more outlets for charging their laptops, Smyth told The Daily Reveille in a previous interview.

With the funding saved from the lab closure, Wi-Fi improvements are now a top priority for the STFOC. At a Feb. 20 meeting, The

STFOC approved Rodgers’ proposed idea of setting aside unused Information Technology Services revenue from the 2013-14 fiscal year for wireless improvements.

If revenue is available, the STFOC will use it toward Wi-Fi improvements, with Middleton being top priority as of Mar. 20.

While students may still be waiting for buildings like Lockett and Patrick F. Taylor to receive wireless updates, they will soon be required to connect to a new network.

On May 17, lsusecure will officially retire, and members of the campus community will have to connect to eduroam.

Eduroam started in Europe and is used by universities all over the world. If University students are on another campus using eduroam, they should be able to connect using their myLSU login information, Hector Rios, assistant director of Networking and Infrastructure told The Daily Reveille in March.

“There’s no use in continuing to support two networks that do the same thing,” Rios said.

To connect to eduroam, the only change users have to make is adding “@lsu.edu” to their username during the login process.

Robert Kuhn, now-retired STFOC chairperson and LSU Vice Provost, said previously to The Daily Reveille the STFOC’s earlier years focused on providing and maintaining computer labs for students.

How technology is used on the University’s campus may change, but it will remain an integral part of student life.
