Oneofakind LSU students showcase designs at Baton Rouge fashion show

Bradley Williams · Entertainment Writer

University apparel design students showcased their work at the inaugural Oneofakind Baton Rouge Fashion Show this Saturday, joining the ranks of other designers from across the South. The University’s Textiles, Apparel and Merchandising program selected six undergraduates and recent alumni to showcase their work at the fashion show. “It’s an honor being picked by a panel of professors to show my garment,” said apparel design senior Brigid Horlander. Horlander said nature and Oscar De La Renta inspired her when she was creating her garment, a white and pink gown that flowed elegantly as the model walked. “It’s really an exciting time to be at the fashion show because this is one of the first times I showed a garment I made. … It’s awesome to get the opportunity to do this,” said apparel design junior Katherine Bonnecaze. Audrey Hepburn and other classic style icons inspired Bonnecaze to create her FASHION, see page 15

When he got to his cell phone after LSU’s 7-4 victory against UNO on Saturday, freshman infielder Kramer Robertson had a text message. It was the one he’d been waiting for — that he’d be in the starting lineup Sunday when LSU battled Grambling in Alex Box Stadium. Except the message wasn’t from LSU coach Paul Mainieri, an assistant or a teammate. It was from his mom, Baylor women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey, who heard the news from the television announcers during Saturday’s game. “All right, I better prepare then,” Robertson thought. And prepared he was. Robertson dazzled defensively and scored three runs while fellow freshman Jared Poche’ scattered four hits through six WIN, see page 11

Local home brewers donate canned goods 11 teams brewed aphrodisiac beer Zach Carline

Beer and food typically go hand in hand, but for the local Baton Rouge home brewers club, Brasseurs a la Maisons, the food went from hand to hand. On Saturday, the group raised what was estimated as more than a ton of canned food for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank during their second annual Iron Brewer Festival, held at the Tin Roof Beer brewery off Nicholson Drive. Blake Winchell, president and founding member of the club, said the Iron Brewer Festival was

an idea the Brasseurs had after attending other local beer festivals and deciding they wanted their own. Adding further to the uniqueness of their event, they modeled it after the popular Iron Chef competition, assigning each of the 11 brew teams a style of beer to create for the competition, in line with the theme of aphrodisiacs, he said. Because the club is not legally allowed to sell alcohol to the public, they decided to have the attendees donate to a charity, choosing the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, Winchell said. “We wanted to make a difference in the local community,” Winchell said. For a total price of one

canned good, though more were welcomed, attendees received a coozie and a cup to be filled with as much beer as they desired. Mike Manning, president and CEO of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, oversaw the collection of the canned goods at the entrance tent. The event aimed to raise more than a ton of food, and with an hour until the event ended, Manning said it appeared they had passed their goal. In addition, they also received cash donations. “This is a great way to raise awareness for hunger,” Manning said, noting the various ages and socioeconomic statuses of people BREWERS, see page 15
