Subject from BCS video arrested for sexual assault, obscenity

Downing traveled to N.O. on Thurs. Matthew Jacobs Editor-in-Chief

Brian Downing, the Alabama fan seen thrusting his genitalia in the face of an incapacitated LSU fan after the BCS National Championship game, was arrested late Thursday for sexual battery and obscenity, according to reports

from The Associated Press. Along with the release of a wanted poster on Wednesday, the New Orleans Police Department opened an investigation to determine whether the Alabama fan’s actions, which occurred at the Krystal restauDOWNING rant on Bourbon Street, constituted sexual battery. No charges had been filed, but

a spokesman for NOPD told The Associated Press that Downing was traveling from Alabama to New Orleans on Thursday to meet with police. The Associated Press reported that sex crimes detectives met Downing at his attorney’s office in New Orleans before taking him to lockup. The Alabama fan is reported to be the second cousin of Alabama sheriff Heath Taylor, who did not want to personally identify his relative to police,

Even though South Carolina’s Saturday primary is miles away, students and professors are making predictions as the field of Republican nominees grows narrower. Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced Thursday morning he will no longer remain in the race for the Republican

nomination and will endorse former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Perry’s decision to drop out leaves Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal without a horse in the presidential race. Jindal, who officially endorsed Perry in September, took to Facebook on Thursday to announce that he will not endorse another candidate in Perry’s absence. “I don’t plan to endorse

anyone else in the primary. I look forward to supporting the nominee. America can’t afford four more years of Barack Obama,” Jindal wrote. In his post, Jindal called Perry and the state of Texas “good neighbors” to Louisiana during the “dark days of Hurricane Gustav” and said he had spoken to the Texas

according to The Associated Press. Taylor said he had not himself seen the YouTube video that feature the incident, but other family members informed him Thursday that his relative had been identified in the video. Taylor told The Associated Press that he called NOPD to ask whether officers wanted to jail and extradite his relative or have him travel to New Orleans to surrender. Police requested the latter, and Taylor gave his relative’s

The LSU Faculty Senate voted Thursday afternoon to table a resolution that would add pluses or minuses to students’ letter grades. The senate unanimously agreed to revisit the resolution, titled “A Plus or Minus Grading System for LSU,” after the issue was reviewed more closely. Several faculty members voiced concerns including what the resolution would eventually cost, how it would affect transfer students and what it would mean for students applying to graduate programs. Don Chance, the finance professor who introduced the resolution, said he was unsure how much the implementation of a new system would cost but had heard that the amount would be relatively minor. But University Registrar Robert Doolos said that’s not the case. Doolos said a change to the registrar’s software, in addition to paying people to work on the system, would cost the University a significant amount of money. GRADING, see page 4
