Best and bubbliest: Which boba location is your cup of tea? BY KATIE POWERS ASSISTANT BUZZ EDITOR

The bubble tea game in Campustown is strong, and thanks to the wide variety of offerings, the talent runs deep. Many students question the need for so many bubble tea options, and those concerns are certainly valid, especially when you consider the lack of other dining options on campus. But if you enjoy bubble tea, it’s worth checking out each location where it’s sold on campus because of their unique vibes and offerings.

Latea Bubble Tea Lounge Latea offers a simple menu of classic milk and fruit tea flavors as well as some pastry options and signature seasoned fries. The shop’s tea flavors are consistent and strong, and customers can order drinks to their specific tastes. It’s a welcoming and airy atmosphere, but seating is limited, so it’s best for an on-the-go visit. Location: 601 S. Sixth St., #105, Champaign Taipei Cafe Taipei Cafe is one of the newer bubble tea spots in Campustown, but because of its odd location in the back of The Daily Illini’s former office, it often goes unnoticed. Like Latea, Taipei Cafe offers a classic selection of fruit and milk teas that can be customized to your individual taste, but its menu expands to smoothies and food options. The sleek lounge atmosphere is welcoming and good for socializing, so it’s worth the trek. Location: 512 E. Green St., Champaign

Kung Fu Tea Located on Sixth Street between John and Green streets, Kung Fu Tea is unique in that all of its milk teas are made with non-dairy creamer. But don’t let that scare you away if you’re a dairy aficionado. There’s something for everyone at Kung Fu, as it offers a wide range of flavors and drinks like slushies and yogurt drinks and provide a bubble tea recipe that’s different from the other Green Street offerings, but still authentic and high quality. It also has the most extensive food menu of all the bubble tea shops on campus, so it’s a great spot to hit for a fresh, tasty meal. Location: 707 S. Sixth St., Suite 107, Champaign

Teamoji When Teamoji opened last fall, taking the coveted Green Street storefront previously occupied by Mashawi Grill, there was some grumbling from the campus community about the necessity of yet another bubble tea shop. But Teamoji quickly distinguished itself from the competition by adding a unique element to the campus bubble tea game: the cheese float. The cheese float is a drink topping with the flavor of a salty and sweet cheesecake and the consistency of mousse. If that doesn’t sound appetizing, Teamoji offers many classic bubble tea options also. Plus, its Signature Fruit Tea is one of the most delightfully refreshing (albeit expensive) drinks available on campus.

Caffe Bene Thanks to its central location on Green Street and relaxed coffee shop aesthetic, Caffe Bene provides students an opportunity to enjoy their bubble tea in an environment that’s appealing to study in or to meet up with friends. It offers seven different bubble tea flavors, a departure from the extensive menus of the other locations, including Thai, taro and a selection of fruit flavors. But unlike the other locations, Caffe Bene doesn’t primarily serve bubble tea. Its menu includes lattes, brewed coffee and coffee shop treats. If you frequent Caffe Bene, be sure to download the Hooked app since it regularly offers deals on bubble tea drinks and coffee.

Where to eat out when your parents are footing the bill

BY ZOE STEIN STAFF WRITER

It’s always nice to be treated to a delicious meal when the parents are in town, but where to go can be a tough decision. Do you go for a fancy meal or would you rather have a good old-fashioned dinner? Where should you go for breakfast? What options are out there that aren’t too expensive? Luckily, ChampaignUrbana offers a wide variety of dining options, so you'll always find something that caters to your needs. If you’re looking for a fancy meal: Pizzeria Antica in downtown Champaign might be a little pricey, but if your parents are willing to splurge, it’s a real treat. Their specialty is the traditional Neapolitan pizza. They even have ovens imported from Naples to cook them in. The pizzas run anywhere from $14$16 and are worth every penny. A personal favorite is the Margherita Speciale, made with fresh mozzarella di bufala (buffalo mozzarella). With fresh ingredients and an impressive oven, the pizzas are as close to an authentic Italian pizza as you’ll get here in Champaign. Location: 10 E. Chester St., Champaign

If you’re looking for a good old-fashioned meal: The Courier Cafe in downtown Urbana fits the bill. Residing in the old newspaper building, the restaurant is filled with antiques and decor dating back to the building’s former newspaper days, providing the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a good meal, not to mention its delicious food and good prices. Its got an extensive menu, ranging from a classic burger to delicious sandwiches, plus its many breakfast options. If you plan to go for breakfast though, be sure to get there early, as the wait can get quite long. Courier is known for its delicious milkshakes, so you won’t be disappointed if you stay for dessert. Location: 111 N. Race St., Urbana If you’re looking for a fancy meal that won’t break the bank: The Bread Company is the place to go. Located on Goodwin Avenue, it’s right on campus near the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and Espresso Royale, so it's the perfect spot if you plan to catch a show. Specializing in pizza and pasta, it’s a little more expensive for dinner, but with the parents in town, it’s well worth the cost. The atmosphere is inviting, the servers are friendly and the art-

work on the walls is striking. Even the chairs are unique. Location: 706 S. The 24/7 diner, located on Gregory Street, is a staple here on campus. Its

service is quick and easy and the food is tasty, but it certainly won’t break the bank. Try an omelet or the hotcakes if you get a chance, but if you’re not a fan of breakfast food, have no fear. Burger barcrawl binge: slow and steady wins the race

BY ZOE STEIN STAFF WRITER With all the bars on campus, it can be hard to narrow down where to go on a night out, especially if you’re looking for something to eat. Most of the bars have burgers, a classic bar food, but where should you go to get one? If you’re looking to try a burger from each bar, where do you go first? Which place gives you the most variety? To answer these questions, we've created a burger crawl itinerary that will ensure that no matter where you end up, deliciousness will ensue.

First stop: Joe’s At the beginning of the night, you want a good burger, something that’ll make your mouth water when you see it coming to your table. Joe’s supplies that. Out of all the bars on campus, Joe’s has some of the best burgers. If you’re a burger purist, it offers the Average Joe, which is simply a hamburger with standard toppings. If you’re feeling adventurous, though, it has burgers like the Mac Attack, with fried mac and cheese on top, and the Angry Goat, featuring goat cheese and a peach habanero barbecue sauce. Its got a burger for everyone. If you want a side, take advantage of the Big Ten deal and get any of its burger options, a drink and fries for $12.

Last stop: Murphy’s Murphy’s burgers aren’t bad. They’re good, but they’re nothing special. There’s a reason they’re $1 on Mondays. They don’t have the options that Joe’s or Legends offer, but if you’re looking for a quick bite to eat, it’s a good place to go. Like the other bars, Murphy’s offers a classic burger, but when it comes to other options, there are only a couple: the bacon cheeseburger or the standard cheeseburger. Sure, you can add mushrooms to your burger if you want, but in terms of customization, there aren't a lot of options. But if you don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on a small burger, it's a good price for what you get.

Next stop: Legends Legends might not have all of the fancy burgers that Joe’s has, but it does have some of its own unique specialties. Alongside the classic Legends Burger, it has a Sticky Burger (with peanut butter and bacon) and an Atomic Burger, which is spicy, to say the least. What makes a Legends burger so good is that the bar offers unlimited toppings. If you want a lot of lettuce, tomato, onion or pickles, Legends has you covered. It has a table of condiments with whatever you’d like, and as someone who likes a little extra onion on her burger, it’s nice not to be charged extra for it. Take advantage of half-priced burger night. It’s a great deal.

MURPHY’S

PUB

Last, last stop: Jurassic Grill If you eat all of the bar burgers and you’re still hungry, there’s always Jurassic Grill. It isn’t a bar, but it’s easily accessible on Green Street and where you may find other bar goers at the end of the night. It isn’t the best burger around, and it might be a little greasy, but it’ll satisfy a late-night burger craving.

The show must go on: where to eat after the applause

BY MARK TOLEDANO STAFF WRITER

Dinner and a show: It’s a pairing as old as time. In Champaign-Urbana, matching a nice meal with entertainment is not only achievable but enjoyable. The thriving micro-urban community we call home lays claim to awardwinning restaurants and world-class talent. Whether you’re trying to rock a first date or have some quality family time, pairing the perfect meal with a show is sure to succeed. Art Theater & Big Grove Tavern You cannot find more local film aficionados anywhere else than at the Art Theater. This central Illinois landmark and buzz favorite is a staple of campus culture. Next time you take in a flick, indulge beforehand at the Big Grove Tavern down the block. This trendy eatery serves up perfect movie food: gourmet burgers, prime steaks and specialty pasta. But nothing will get you in the movie mood like their famous appetizer: seasoned popcorn. Surprisingly simple, Big Grove’s well-known starter was practically made to accompany a film. When you’re done at the Tavern, gear up at the Art Theater with some more gourmet popcorn. Krannert & Timpone's Treating yourself to a Krannert show should

be a special experience. Complement the Krannert performance with an elegant dinner at Timpone's. With its quiet location on the east side of campus, this Urbana restaurant has long been a favorite for business luncheons and high-profile guests visiting campus. The atmosphere is the key to this restaurant’s success; prepare to put on your best dress shirt and mind your table manners.

Canopy Club & Merry Ann’s If there is one local restaurant that students know, it’s Merry Ann’s. This campus icon is infamous for its round-the-clock service and delicious drunk food in the middle of the night. It is the perfect spot to refuel lost electrolytes after a night of going hard at the Canopy Club. Located just a block and a half away, Merry Ann’s can be stumbled into at just about any level of intoxication. All of the standing at a Canopy Club concert can be exhausting, which makes Merry Ann’s the spot for some much-needed relaxation with friends. Waffles, pancakes and burgers are the favorites, but you can also order milkshakes and sandwiches. Virginia Theatre & Hamilton Walker’s If the Art Theater doesn’t satisfy your cinema needs, head over to the historic Virginia Theatre just blocks away. Home of the world-class Ebert-

Start your artsy night off right with a handsome steak cut at the nearby Hamilton Walker’s. This chophouse is more bang for your buck. Where you could expect to pay an arm and a leg for the same steak dinner in Chicago, Hamilton Walker’s offers a quality alternative at a reasonable price. If steak isn’t your thing, no

What your dating app choice says about where you should eat Check out which CU favorites most closely resemble your go-to app BY TAYLOR CYGAN ASSISTANT BUZZ EDITOR Unless you live under a rock, there's no doubt you have heard of dating apps or websites. Tinder, Bumble, Farmers Only, Match, the list goes on; however, regardless of your dating preferences, there is one commonality across all the different forums: the battle you will inevitably have with your date on deciding where to eat. Volleying back and forth the statement “you choose” can make any food decision a nightmare. Fear not, for your friendly neighborhood buzz Dining Guide has the answer for you. Each dating app has its own personality and its own match (restaurant match, that is). Bumble: Noodles & Company First up on our list is the dating app Bumble, the classier version of Tin-

der or Tinder 2.0, as some users call it. Given its more sophisticated reputation, you should go somewhere more sophisticated for your date. We suggest you take your date to Noodles & Company. Located in the heart of campus, Noodles has something for everyone: pasta, soups, salads, you name it. Even the pickiest of eaters can undoubtedly find something they like at this eatery. For us college students, the food is relatively inexpensive too, which is perfect just in case the Brad, Chad or Thad you met on Bumble turns out to not be as compatible to you as you thought.

For a hit-or-miss app, you need a hit-ormiss restaurant: our campus’ beloved Burrito King. Typically consumed while intoxicated — just like you might have been when you swiped right on your night out or meet-up — this restaurant is the perfect destination for your date. The service is quick, the food is cheap and it’s right on Green Street. You may be asking yourself, “Will the food make me feel OK afterward?” The answer to that is probably not; however, that doesn’t stop half the campus population from having it every other weekend. Along with that question, will this date go alright if you met them through Tinder? That is equally as questionable. Thus, Burrito King is the perfect spot to test the waters for your Tinder matches.

Tinder: Burrito King Ah, Tinder, the No. 1 app for cringe-worthy, too-forward messages, sketchy profile photos and endless swiping right or left.

Farmers Only: Meatheads If you happen to be an agricultural student or just someone who really wants to meet a farmer, you’re probably a Farm-

ers Only regular, and we recommend you take your date to Meatheads. For anyone that has an affinity for meat — or typically orders all food with the meat lovers option — this restaurant is a perfect fit. The menu, as the name suggests, is all things meat. That being said, if you or your date is a vegetarian or not a meat fan, this is probably not the best place for you. If that’s not the case, you can take your date to taste all the different cuts of meat Meatheads has to offer. Then later on, if things go well, you can tell all your friends and family how you two met. Match: I have no words If you, dear reader, frequent Match. com, you shouldn’t be going anywhere on campus because you are most definitely over the age of 50. Case closed. tcygan2@readbuzz.com

How to find your new favorite coffee spot No matter what gives you a buzz, you’ll find your perfect cup of joe BY SERINA TALUJA ASSISTANT SPECIAL SECTIONS EDITOR

Every coffee shop has its specialty and here at the University, there are a lot of coffee joints with lots of specialties to choose from. If you know you’re looking for a certain kind of coffee, it’s possible to spend weeks trying out every place around campus to figure out which coffee shop has just what you want. To avoid the crazy search to get your caffeine fix, here’s a guide to where you should get your coffee based on the type of coffee drinker you are. If you like black coffee, check out the Caribou Coffee served at Einstein Bros. Bagels in the Illini Union. The aromatic coffee possesses a roasted flavor that is slightly sweet and perfect for no-nonsense folks who like their coffee with no added cream or sugar. If you like sweet coffee, Starbucks is a reliable option. Offering ever-changing flavor options but a consistent taste across campus locations, you always get what you’re paying for. With three locations spread across campus, you can get your sweet-coffee fix from almostanywhere. If you like pretty coffee, look no further than Caffe Paradiso. This hidden gem has baristas who make delicious and decadent drinks with latte art that ranges from hearts to leaves to whimsical patterns. You’ll enjoy your coffee almost as much as you’ll enjoy getting to post it from six different angles on Instagram. If you like classic-style espresso drinks, try a cappuccino from Caffe Bene. Another shop with multiple campus locations, Caffe Bene works by-the-book when it comes to making espresso drinks like cappuccinos and lattes. There are no frills or fuss, only drinks that will get you through your 8 a.m. lectures without any sugar crash later. If you like a variety of coffee, check out one of the many Espresso Royale locations on campus. Not only are all of its drinks, from coffee to tea to frozen beverages, absolutely fantastic, but it also has a different deal every day of the week. So if you like to change it up and try new things without the risk of spending $5 on something you end up disliking, Espresso makes it easy for you to keep it spontaneous

and within your budget.

If you like to grab a bite to eat with your coffee, Array Cafe will satisfy your hunger and your coffee craving. It has a full menu of soups, quesadillas and sandwiches, as well as delightful coffee and espresso drinks. It also has smaller options for mornings when you’re on-the-go, like bagels or muffins.

If you like cheap coffee, Dunkin’ Donuts is sure to fit your price. The coffee is rich and strong and never costs more than it would cost you to make a cup at home. Dunkin’ consistently manages to get your order into your hands quickly, so you can get your coffee without having to consider the time or financial tolls other spots might take on your day or your wallet.

If you’re looking for an experience with your coffee, set aside some time to check out BrewLab Coffee. This relatively new joint is filled with natural light, plants, walls you can draw on as you please and friendly baristas. You’ll have a fantastic time at BrewLab, whether you’re on your work grind or just trying to relax and enjoy some good coffee.

Breakfast showdown: Cracked versus Cracked (the truck)

BY LILY MOSBROOK STAFF WRITER

What came first: the chicken or the egg? Another age-old question that is on the minds of hungry University students on campus is, “Which is better: the Cracked food truck or the restaurant?” Who will win this breakfast-food faceoff? The food truck and the restaurant are faced head-to-head in this egg-celent review. The Cracked restaurant The Cracked food truck has been serving unique breakfast sandwiches, soups, wraps and rich tater tot combos since 2012, when a University graduate opened it. The storefront on Green Street opened in 2017 with a similar but expanded menu. When walking into the Cracked restaurant, if it is a popular time, you are most likely going to be greeted by a long line of students eager for their greasy morning fix. The restaurant is full of bright colors and lively, popping music. However, the vibe of the restaurant on a Saturday morning is the exact opposite. On weekends, the Cracked restaurant is chock-full of tired students, most likely with sunglasses on, looking for a quick meal before diving back into bed. As for the menu, any hungry attendee

cannot go wrong with the “Morning Bender” sandwich: an egg sandwich layered with hash browns and cheddar cheese slathered in cream cheese. There is an extra charge to add bacon, and it is so worth it. Although the wait can occasionally be time consuming; it is also a great place for a casual breakfast with friends. On the other hand, if you are more of a night owl, the Green Street location is open until 3 a.m. Whether you find yourself out searching for a quick bite after a

rigorous night at the Undergraduate Library or a tiring night out, the Cracked store may be the solution.

have a sandwich in your possession, you can find the Cracked food truck at a myriad of locations around campus. It is often parked near popular student hot spots, which makes the truck ideal for students heading to, or from, class. Typically, there isn’t a long wait at the truck, which makes it moreappealing than the restuarant. The food served at the truck is basically indistinguishable from the brick-and-mortar location’s food, but the experience is more unique. There is something to be said about the joy of spotting the vibrant truck on the street and getting a warm sandwich or a pile of sloppy tater tots from it. I think the restaurant is more convenient if you are on Green Street looking for a bite, but the truck offers a fun experience that is unbeatable. Getting your breakfast fix from a food truck appeals to the trendsetter in everyone. This also offers food-truck goers endless options; you can put the uniquely painted truck on your Instagram story, tell your family and friends you just got breakfast from a food truck, the list goes on. The Cracked food truck offers a distinctive alternative and providesa new sense of excitement to the classic breakfasts we are all used to.

The food truck One of the most valuable lessons I have learned from being a University student is to save half of my Cracked sandwich and heat it up in the morning before class. This quick trick provides a grab-and-go breakfast for any college student. However, if you don’t already lilymm2@readbuzz.com
