‘A PACKAGE DEAL’
By Julie Buntjer The Globe Jackson
Laura and Mike Bidne of Jackson need only look at their 12-year-old twins, Julia and Thomas, to appreciate all that was available to them when the kids were born — and all that is available today to premature babies cared for in the Sanford Children’s Boekelheide Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The Bidne twins were born July 31, 2009.
Arriving 13 weeks early,
Julia weighed 2 pounds, 1 ounce, and Thomas was 1 pound, 8 ounces.
“I did not see Thomas at all (when he was born),” shared Laura. “He needed resuscitating. His Apgar score was zero — he was not breathing and not able to do anything on his own.”
Julia fared a bit better, but also required her own team of doctors and nurses.
While you wouldn’t know it by looking at them today, the twins endured many challenges as they
Sanford Health restarts Sweet Dreams campaign
By Julie Buntjer The Globe SIOUX FALLS, S.D. —
When Sanford Health Foundation launched a $2.2 million Sweet Dreams fundraising campaign to enhance technology in its Boekelheide neonatal intensive care unit in early 2020, the healthcare industry had no idea that a global pandemic would halt its efforts and shift so much
energy into caring for people who contracted COVID-19.
Now, nearly two years into the pandemic, Sanford Health Foundation has relaunched its campaign in hopes of reaching its fundraising goal for the Boekelheide NICU by the end of this year.
An estimated 20% of all NICU patients at Sanford’s Boekelheide unit come in from other regional facilities — including infants born to residents of southwest Minnesota.
Erin Sanderson, executive director of
the Sanford Health Foundation, said the Sweet Dreams campaign was relaunched in November, to coincide with Prematurity Awareness Month. Already, more than $1.5 million has been raised toward the $2.2 million goal, making it possible to raise the $700,000 before year’s end.
“One hundred percent of the campaign will benefit our NICU with lifesaving equipment,” Sanderson said, noting that several

Fish and the weather don’t cooperate on Lake Okabena
By Julie Buntjer The Globe
WORTHINGTON — Southwest Minnesota’s commercial fisherman returned to Nobles County last Thursday, two weeks after his crew harvested 20,000 pounds of buffalo fish from Lake Bella, south of Worthington.
The crew, led by Scott Deslauriers, planned to spend Thursday through Saturday on Lake Okabena, pulling their nets through the Worthington lake in hopes of harvesting additional buffalo fish, as well as sediment-stirring common
carp.
Unfortunately, a small haul on Thursday, combined with a Friday morning sonar search that showed a lack of schooling fish — and a weather forecast for wind and colder temperatures over the weekend — led the fishermen to pack up their equipment and head for home.
Deslauriers captured an estimated 8,000 pounds of buffalo fish and 800 pounds of common carp during Thursday’s seining effort.
A Windom man leads the police on chase
Smith said he did not think the squad car was trying to stop him
By Emma McNamee The Globe
WORTHINGTON — Bernard George Smith Jr., Windom, was charged with a felony count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.
On Nov. 25, a Worthington Police Department officer observed a white Audi sedan traveling at a speed he estimated to be approximately 45 to 50 mph in a 35 mph zone, while in a marked squad car at the intersection of Milton Avenue and Oxford Street.
The officer turned westbound on Oxford Street to begin to catch up with the vehicle, the vehicle reportedly turned north onto North Grand Avenue and accelerated rapidly.
The officer activated overhead emergency lights and attempted to catch up with the vehicle. The officer continued following the vehicle as it took the entrance ramp to Interstate 90, where it accelerated at a high rate of speed. The officer maintained visual contact with the vehicle, but as the officer was entering I-90, the vehicle was already exiting onto Minnesota 60, prompting the officer to accelerate to a speed of 120 mph in order to catch up with the vehicle. The officer continued to follow the vehicle on Oxford Street where it continued traveling at a high rate of speed.
Another Worthington police officer was at the intersection of Clifton Avenue and Oxford Street when he observed the same vehicle, still traveling above the speed limit, and began to follow. The two officers were eventually able to get the vehicle to come to stop. They attempted

Aging is not a burden, but an accomplishment
It is my mom’s birthday this week.
December 7, an infamous day indeed, but in our household, it has always been first associated with chocolate truffles and gifts on the breakfast table. She doesn’t want breakfast in bed, because she wants to make things her way, but she will accept a mug of chai tea if someone else brings it to her. My mom is a particular woman, and I’m not just trying to flatter her when I say that growing up, our household would not have functioned without her. Despite working a full time job and being a person with her own hobbies and interests, she also kept track of three girls and we did not always make it easy. It is amazing really, how much she did and still does, and I don’t tell her that enough.
When asked about how old she is, my
mom tends to shy away from the answer. She makes a show of it, says “well, I’m 42 again!” and laughs, and she’s not alone in this practice. So many of the women in my life — fantastic women who I admire greatly and have looked to for guidance and comfort, inspiration and camaraderie — seem just a little ashamed of aging, even if they hide it behind jokes and smiles.
I watch them, the way they deflect the question and skirt away from answers, and for years I have received the message that aging is not something to be embraced. I’ve heard the sentiment “don’t get old,” so many times
it’s disheartening. When we do talk about the topic of aging honestly, it’s filled with undercurrents of unease and tension and more than a little resentment.
I can think of a number of causes to this phenomenon.
The internal fear of growing older, of no longer feeling youthful, is one I am not immune to. Time is a ticking clock, and when there is so much I want to do in life, the older I get, the more I am sometimes overcome with the frantic sensation that I am losing out on the time I do have. Then of course, there are the consequences of aging, which are similarly frightening. There will come a day when my hands won’t write anymore, where my body and mind will be unable to accomplish the tasks I ask of them. That day is far off, but I watched my grandmother lose
the ability to close her hands around anything she tried to hold; my grandfather, a man who loved telling stories, struggled to recall details like the names of his granddaughters before he died. These are terrifying thoughts; of course people fear — even resent — aging.
However, neither of those lines of thought seem to account for the way women seem almost ashamed of aging. For that, I would point to a more insidious, external source: the pressures of beauty in American culture, and the way women have been taught to associate appearance with value. It is impossible to interact with media without the addition of ads for how to maintain the image of youth. How to hide greying roots, which anti-aging products will keep skin free of lines. How to appear younger; how to keep people’s interest.
The older I get, the more I find myself absolutely hating these trends, this need for women to constantly be erasing the proof of our endurance. Every year, my hair grows grayer, and I thank my dad, because it’s his genes that I inherited. I am glad to continue aging — glad to be growing and changing and gaining experiences — when I know so many people who no longer are.
Life is so incredibly hard. Making it from one year to the next is an accomplishment, and when the last two years have been filled with so much national and global turmoil that has resulted in an enormous cost of life, I am so grateful to be counted as someone who has survived. Why on earth would I want to go backwards, look younger, be younger, when there is more ahead of me?
So, to my mom, when
you read this: Even if a part of you is less than thrilled with it, I am grateful that you are getting older. I am so glad you are here with me. To think, if either of us had stopped aging — if you were forever 42 — we would never have the relationship we do today. I have come to rely on your years of wisdom, the hardships you have made it through, and your steadfast comfort. We joke that I am a copy of you, and as I have watched you change over the last few years especially, I hope this is true. When I am your age, I hope I am still open to the possibility of the new, of growing towards something better. Mom, I am so grateful you continue to age, and hope you continue to do so for a long, long time. I wish you the very happiest of birthdays, and all my love.
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light
Now more than ever does our generation need to be reminded of the light and liberation that comes from the greatest event in human history, the reason for this season.
SCOTT BARBER
Whatever darkness we experience in this life, whether circumstantial, relational or psychological, we can overcome it because the light of God in Jesus Christ has shined into our darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it.
Listen to these words of hope from the prophet Isaiah written over 500 years before the birth of Jesus Christ when the Jews entered over 500 years of darkness and oppression.
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned … you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor…. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.” (Isaiah 9:2-7)
This light is Jesus Christ. The son is the
Son of God. The Mighty God took on human frailty. The King of Kings has established a kingdom of peace and justice that has no end. God lived with us, among us, in our filth and darkness.
Jesus entered the darkness of our world, our circumstances, our relationships, our injustices, our personal demons and depression.
Ultimately, he entered the darkness of our sin, the source of all darkness. He became our sin on the cross and in his violent death, he took the justice of God on himself for our evil and for all evil in this world and he broke sin’s power over us.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5).
This is not merely a past historical event we remember at Christmas and Easter.
Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection catalyzed a chain reaction altering the course of human life and history rippling through time. That light did not shine at one time, it shines now and for eternity. This is an objective truth that cannot be altered, it’s not merely a personal belief or perspective. However, this life altering power is only experienced by those who believe in him and receive the liberation from the darkness of sin that he offers.
Have you been liberated by the light of Jesus? Have you surrendered to the Prince of Peace?
Though it may not feel like the most wonderful time of the year, we can still say it or sing it because we believe the truth.
For those who look to the child born to us, for those who call him their “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” a light is shining in their darkness and it never fades.
Friends, there is no prison for the soul liberated by Jesus! There is no oppression that can suppress the joy of Jesus! There is no power that can put resurrection Hope back in the grave!
Though we may not feel it, it is still the most wonderful time of the year.
Because of Jesus, we cannot only sing, but live like, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”

Husband’s little secret revealed after 30 years
DEAR
ABBY: I have been with my husband for 41 years, married for 30, but we lived together for five years before we tied the knot. I have just learned he has a son who is two months younger than our son. The mother is a woman he slept with while I was pregnant with our first child. She put the baby up for adoption, and the young man has just reached out to my daughter. My husband claims he didn’t find out about the child until after he was relinquished, and he didn’t believe the woman ever really

If his behavior since your wedding has been as exemplary as he claims, you should be able to review his financial records and see where the marital assets have been going. County considers spending $2M for broadband project
By Kari Lucin The Globe
WORTHINGTON —
Bringing broadband service to unserved and underserved homes in Nobles County may be an option for part of the county’s $4.2 million received from the American Recovery Plan Act, if a proposal from Lismore Cooperative Telephone Company comes to fruition.
The Nobles County Board of Commissioners was briefed on the idea at its work session last week, and requested the co-op provide a presentation at this week’s
commission meeting, set for 3 p.m. Thursday.
While the entire project to bring fiberoptic broadband to about 2,900 locations — serving an estimated 6,300 people — would cost between $20 million and $21 million, it would be contingent on receiving a USDA ReConnect grant of about $15 mil-
lion. The co-op would contribute $2.5 million to the project as well, and about $2 million would come from Nobles County’s ARPA funding, with potential participation from townships using their ARPA money as well.
Cities already served by broadband, such as Worthington and Adrian, would not be eligible for the project. Communities that could benefit include Bigelow, Reading and Dundee.
Several members of the public spoke about the importance of broadband, whether to attract
younger families that consider it a necessity akin to electricity and running water, to allow seniors to access health care services from home, or to enable students to attend school remotely.
“In the last year of the pandemic, you’ve had online learning… I just know from my own family that there are places where my niece and nephew could not do their school work because of the internet service,” said Commissioner Justin Ahlers. “They had to be at a certain spot where Lismore fiber happens to be. They
couldn’t be anywhere else for eight hours a day, which is a huge inconvenience, during the whole pandemic.”
Kathy Henderschiedt, who owns and operates a trucking business in rural Nobles County along with her husband, said that 100% of their business is now internet-based. She emphasized the importance of reliable internet service, and praised the co-op for its reliability and customer service.
She also said some of her employees brought their children to work during the pandemic
because they could get better broadband service in the employee breakroom than they could elsewhere.
“If we could provide that for everyone within the county, that would be fantastic,” Henderschiedt said. “I wholeheartedly support this project.”
Should commissioners vote to go ahead with the project, using $2 million in county and township ARPA funds would be contingent on receiving the $15 million grant, said Christopher Konechne of Finley Engineering.

Working with the Okabena-Ocheda Watershed District to reduce common carp from Lake Okabena, this was Deslauriers’ second attempt to sein rough fish this year. On Feb. 25, Deslauriers removed roughly 4,000 pounds of buffalo fish and 600 pounds of carp from the Worthington lake.
Finding the carp
Seining carp from Lake Okabena is nothing new.
Okabena-Ocheda Water shed District Administrator Dan Livdahl has records that date back to 1926, when 529,754 pounds of roughfish were harvested from the local lake. Seining wasn’t done again until 1944, with four events that decade.
In the 1950s, seining in Lake Okabena was done every year, with the largest haul completed in 1957. That effort result ed in 74,593 pounds of buffalo fish and 44,202 pounds of carp being removed from the lake. Seining occurred twice in the 1980s and three times in the 1990s, but prior to February, the last seining effort on Lake Okabena was in 2006, when the Minne sota Department of Natural Resources harvested 7,430 pounds of carp.
The watershed district is focused on removing common carp from Lake Okabena as a way of improving water quali ty and clarity. Carp stir
up sediment on the lake bottom and destroy vegetation. Studies in recent years by Wenck Associates have determined the lake is home to an abundance of the roughfish.
As a result, the watershed district has funded several efforts to track carp habits in the lake.
Twice, Wenck biologists surgically implanted a dozen or more common carp with radio frequency devices that made it possible for Livdahl to monitor where the fish spawned in the springtime and where they tended to congregate.
In addition, less invasive PIT tags were also implanted in nearly 200 Lake Okabena carp by Wenck biologists.
“The purpose of the tagging was two-fold,” Livdahl said.
Their first goal was to figure out where the carp went during the spawning season.
“I think we accomplished that — 70% to 80% of them were in Sunset Bay, so that seems to be where they’re spawning,” he said. “When the water was warm enough, we know they liked the shallowest areas of Sunset Bay, so I think we need to do something with Sunset Bay.”
The second goal was to find schools of carp by creating some Judas fish.
“Each radio-tagged fish represents a larger number of untagged fish in the school,” Livdahl said. “If we could scan the fish that were caught and compare those to the tagged carp, we’d have a
good idea of the amount of carp in the lake.”
The difficulty came in actually trying to sein where large numbers of the tagged carp were known to be.
“Last winter when Scott seined, I thought there were a lot of tagged fish in that area, and somehow they got out,” Livdahl said.
What’s next?
“I think we’ve accomplished what we can with the radio-tagged fish,” Livdahl said, adding that the battery-operated radio frequency tags surgically implanted in carp in 2019 and 2020
are also at the end of their battery life.
The data gathered from the two tagging events will be useful going forward. The watershed district learned where the common carp prefer to spawn, and where they tend to be during the rest of the year.
What the district hasn’t learned is the quantity of carp they are dealing with in the lake.
While the February haul yielded no previously-tagged carp, the district decided not to have Wenck’s biologists return to Worthington to scan the roughfish captured by Deslauriers last
week. Based on the small number of carp pulled in, it was cost-prohibitive.
“Last winter we had basically the same number of fish caught. We paid the consultant to come down and scan the fish … and it cost us $3,000 to do that,” Livdahl said. “We decided if we had a lot more fish, we would have definitely done it.”
With three different population density numbers for common carp in Lake Okabena — all of which seem high to the watershed district’s board of managers — Livdahl said the group planned to discuss
during its 4 p.m. meeting Tuesday the potential for another winter-time seining.
“I think we still need to try to do a removal through seining in order to know what the carp population is in the lake,” Livdahl said. “By seining, you have to remove half or more of the carp from the lake every year in order to make any progress on lowering the carp population in the lake. You have to know what the population is. Removing 1,000 pounds isn’t going to do any good if you need to remove 100,000 pounds.”

Westberg Eischens adds office in Brewster
Kasey (McNab) Nelson
The Globe BREWSTER — Westberg Eischens accounting and advisement firm has added a new office in Brewster. Kasey (McNab) Nelson, a CPA and accountant with Westberg Eischens since 2014, will serve as its manager.
A native of Brewster, Nelson and her husband, Jeremy, relocated there when the opportunity arose to
return to the area.
“The partners at Westberg Eischens were extremely supportive of my move and offered to set me up to work remotely,” Nelson said.
However, after further discussions, Nelson and the partners realized it would be beneficial to set up a brick and mortar office space to better serve clients. Nelson rented a space inside Rolling Hills
Bank, 224 10th St., and officially opened for business in November.
“This has been a great move for me and my family,” she said. “Before COVID hit, our firm had recently upgraded our client portal and cloud accounting services, so we were already set to work remotely. Now, I have the dual advantage of managing a remote office in my hometown while still
remaining plugged-in to the accounting systems and advisement services of a larger accounting firm.”
While her clients include both individuals and businesses, Nelson plans to use her experience serving nonprofits and charitable gambling organizations to grow her existing client list.
“I’m looking forward to re-immersing myself
in my community and introducing myself to area businesses,” she said.
Nelson and her husband, Jeremy, have two children. She is a graduate of the University of South Dakota, and has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, as well as a Master’s degree in Professional Accountancy. She received her CPA license in May 2014.
Local man charged with possession of stolen car
By Emma McNamee The Globe WORTHINGTON
— Lucio Roman, 23, of Worthington, was charged with possession of stolen property after being found in a stolen vehicle, a felony-level charge. He also faces a misdemeanor charge for operating a vehicle after
the revocation of his license.
On Dec. 5, a Worthington Police Officer observed a 2004 Honda Accord pull into the parking lot of the Red Carpet Inn. The officer
ran the license plate and discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Mankato.
The officer approached the vehicle and made contact with the three occupants. The driver was identified as Roman.
All three occupants were detained by officers and Roman was placed in
handcuffs, according to the report.
Roman allegedly told the officer that the vehicle was borrowed to him by a friend. He stated he was given the keys and was unaware that the vehicle was stolen.
The officer made contact with a member of the Mankato Police
Department about the stolen vehicle and learned it was reported stolen that same day.
The registered owner stated he had last seen the vehicle on Dec. 3, and that a Dell laptop was left inside. Officers checked the vehicle and located the laptop.
Roman’s driving priv-
ileges in Minnesota were revoked in July.
If convicted, Roman faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or $10,000 fine for possession of stolen property. Driving after revocation carries a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
Couple charged with drug possession, storing paraphernalia
By Emma McNamee The Globe
PIPESTONE — Christina Barbara Meisenhoelder, 34, and Joshua Lee Meisenhoe lder, 34, both of South Dakota, have been charged with felony-level 5th degree drug possession and storing meth paraphernalia in the presence of a child.
On Nov. 30, law enforcement
executed a search warrant on a room at the Calumet Inn in Pipestone. Law enforcement knocked and announced their presence at the door and were greeted by Joshua Meisenhoelder. Christina Meisenhoelder was also located in the room according to reports, along with their two-year-old child.
Both Joshua and Christina Meisenhoelder allegedly
appeared to be “significantly” under the influence of a controlled substance.
While inside the room, law enforcement reportedly observed multiple meth pipes sitting on the table in plain sight. One pipe was immediately field tested and showed positive for methamphetamine. A thorough search of the room resulted in the
reported discovery of several meth pipes which field tested positive for meth, zip baggies, a vape device, a cut straw, two butane torches and a glass marijuana pipe. The report also noted several other miscellaneous drug paraphernalia. All of the items discovered were easily accessible to a child.
If convicted, the Meisen-
hoelders each face a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment and/or a $10,000 fine for the charge of storing drug paraphernalia in the presence of a child. For the felony drug possession charge there is a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment and/or a $10,000 fine.

WINDOM — A warrant has been issued for Justin Olson, Princeton, to face a felony count of domestic assault after a reported altercation at a Windom residence on Dec. 1. Olson, 28, is also charged with a misdemeanor offense for
fourth-degree property damage.
According to the criminal complaint, a Windom police officer was dispatched to a Windom residence on Dec. 1 for a reported domestic assault.
Upon arrival, the officer spoke with a victim, who had been arguing
with Olson for most of the day, according to the report. The victim stated that Olson was being rude and was told to leave.
Olson reportedly grabbed the victim’s property, who then took it back. Olson then put his arm around the victim’s neck, like a choke-
hold, and tossed the victim aside. The victim yelled to a bystander for the police to be called. When Olson heard another individual in the house on the line with dispatch, he reportedly went into the living room and began to destroy the victim’s property, including a TV,

NFO wraps up Minnesota state convention
OLIVIA — Local meat processing, or the shortage of it in Minnesota, emerged as one of the main issues at the Minnesota National Farmers Organization state convention Saturday in Olivia. Guest speaker Thom Petersen, Minnesota Commissioner of Agriculture, said it all started when COVID-19 hit the country in 2020. Major packing plants were forced to close down and farmers turned to their local processors and butcher shops to sell at least some of their cattle.
But local processors had their problems too, due to the pandemic, such as worker shortage and regulations. Some were forced to close also, while meat shelves in grocery stores became nearly empty.
Petersen expressed his appreciation to Nation-
al Farmers, Minnesota Farmers Union, and Land Stewardship Project for their help in working on legislation to assist meat processors and help new processors get started. In addition, a new course in meat cutting will soon begin at Ridgewater College in Willmar to eventually provide more employees for the industry.
Petersen also said that in the first half of 2021, Minnesota did not lose any dairy farmers, a stark contrast to the huge losses due to low milk prices the past few years.
National Vice President Bruce Shultz, Montana, also spoke. He said the food chain system in the U.S. is broken, referencing when workers became sick or had to quarantine due to COVID-19, and processing and transportation slowed down considerably.
“People are divided on issues in this country,” he said, “But they are coming together more and there is a positive moving forward. For example, people are talking more about making things in America again.”
Many state leaders, including State President Joe Neaton of Watertown, expressed a desire for the national organization to develop a new or improved grain marketing program that would new members and new grain production into the organization. That message was conveyed to Vice President Shultz during convention discussions.
lamps, vase and more. Olson then fled the scene.
Olson has a domestic assault no contact order violation conviction from October, and a felony domestic assault conviction from June. He was also convicted on a felony terroristic threat charge in 2015.
If convicted, Olson faces a maximum of five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine for the felony domestic assault charge. The property damage charge carries a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

Among the 45 newly reported deaths were 36 individuals from pri vate residences, eight from long-term care or assisted living facilities and one who was home

Minnesota to cover tuition for certified nursing assistants
By Dana Ferguson The Globe
ST. PAUL — Walz administration officials on Monday, Dec. 6, announced they would use $3.5 million in feder al COVID-19 relief funds to pay tuition and fees for Minnesota students working to become cer tified nursing assistants.
State health and education officials set a goal to bring 1,000 new certified nursing assis tants into the workforce before Jan. 31 to help quell a caregiver short age impacting the state’s long-term care facilities.
More than 70% of nurs ing homes report that they can’t admit new residents due to insuffi cient staffing.
That shortage has also caused a bottleneck in M innesota hospitals since they can’t discharge patients to the facilities. In an effort to ease the strain on hospitals and care facilities, federal
medics have deployed to Minnesota, the state has opened alternative care sites and 400 National Guard members trained to relieve caregivers in nursing homes.
Gov. Tim Walz in a news release Monday said the state would cover the cost of tuition, fees, study materials and other expenses of those training to become certified nursing assistants. And 10 high schools will receive funding to train students to become nursing assistants.
“Our long-term care facilities are relying on a new generation of certified nursing assistants to provide quality care to their patients,” Walz said. “By working with communities, colleges, and care providers around Minnesota, we will recruit and train these new CNAs and ensure we have the staff we need in long-term care.”
And state leaders put out a call for Minnesotans interested in obtaining the nursing certifications to apply.
“Our college campuses stand at the ready to offer training, but now we need Minnesotans to answer the call,” Minnesota Office of Higher Education Commissioner Dennis Olson said. “If you are about to graduate high school, a current college student, or someone looking for a career change, I hope you will consider pursuing a career as a certified nursing assistant. Together, we can improve the health and wellness of our great state.”
Long-term care organization leaders on Monday said the recruitment effort would help build up a qualified nursing workforce in Minnesota’s senior housing communities. And that could ensure quality care for

The Iowa Department of Health reports 12,254 new cases of COVID-19 and 91 deaths within the last seven days. Thus far in the state, 7,445 deaths
are blamed on the virus.
IDH also reported 721 residents hospitalized with complications from COVID-19, with another 162 patients in Intensive Care Units in the state. Of those patients in ICU, 86.5% were not fully vaccinated against the virus, while 71.9% of hospitalized individuals were not fully vaccinated.
In northwest Iowa, the number of positive cases, along with the percentage of fully vaccinated residents aged 12 and older last updated on Friday were: Dickinson County: 23 cases; 61.9% fully vaccinated.
Lyon County: 38
cases; 46.4% fully vaccinated.
Osceola County: 7 cases; 49.8% fully vaccinated.
Johns Hopkins University reported at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday that 789,997 Americans have died from the virus, including 32,896 people in the last 28 days.
The Minnesota Department of Health continues to ask people to stay home if they have symptoms of COVID-19 and/or are awaiting test results, and to practice universal precautions including washing hands with soap (for 20 seconds), social distancing, and avoiding crowded or confined spaces.
residents.
“Nursing assistants are the foundation of any senior care environment, and it is imperative, for both public health and community well-being, that we are training an adequate number of individuals to serve our seniors in places they call home,” said Patti Cullen, president and CEO of Care Providers of Minnesota. “This is an essential starting point, and we hope to continue to work together to
increase starting wages and benefits to entice more Minnesotans into this valued profession.”
State health officials on Monday also announced that they would open a fourth alternative care location in Hastings to free up hospital bed space in the Twin Cities. Benedictine Living Community-Regina in Hastings is set to become a care site for up to 17 patients coming out of emergency or intensive care settings.
Park Rapids man killed in car crash south of Blackduck
HINES, Minn. — A Park Rapids man is dead after a two-vehicle collision on Sunday evening, Dec. 5, on U.S. Highway 71, south of Blackduck.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Zennah Erickson, 19, of Park Rapids, was driving a 2006 Kia Rio with passenger Colton Erickson, 20, of Park Rapids, when she collided with a Ford F250 driven by Daryl Lundberg, 50, of Blackduck, at 5:55 p.m.
According to the incident report, the Ford F250 was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 71 near Sprucewood Lane NE and the Kia Rio was traveling southbound when it lost control, went sideways into oncoming traffic and struck the F250.
Colton was fatally injured, Zennah had non-life-threatening injuries and Lundberg is listed as having no injuries on the report.
There was snow and ice on the road at the time of the incident, all parties were wearing
their seatbelts and alcohol is not believed to be a factor, according to the report.
The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, Blackduck Fire Department, Blackduck Ambulance Service and Bemidji Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.

MINNEAPOLIS –Medaria Arradondo said Monday, Dec. 6, he will
not seek a new term as the city’s chief of police and will retire from the department next month.
Arradondo thanked Minneapolis officers and their families for their work and support. “They have served under the most challenging of times in our recent history and I am forever grateful for their service,” he told reporters in announcing his plan.
He said that he wasn’t stepping down for another job elsewhere and had no plans to seek elected office.
Arradondo, 54, has been with the department since he joined as a patrol officer in 1989. He was appointed chief in 2017 by then-mayor Betsy Hodges in the wake of the police killing of 911 caller Justine Ruszczyk.
He was appointed to his first three-year term in 2018.
Arradondo in October spoke out strongly against a ballot measure intended to remake his department, warning the changes wouldn’t fix relations between residents and the police

He described the department then as “flatlining” and suggested that he would step down as chief if the measure passed. It failed.

Thursday evening illumination? Saturday afternoon shining?
That just doesn’t offer the same optimism and anticipation for high school football fans as “Friday Night Lights.”
SCOTT MANSCH
But because of a shortage of officials in all high school sports, including football, it’s possible gridiron games in future falls might not always be on Fridays.
West wrestlers do the best that they can
Oliva, Kaat counted among the game’s best
Question: What does the Minnesota West wrestling team have in common with former Minnesota Twins Tony Oliva and Jim Kaat?
Answer: All three are mentioned in this column.
Bluejay blues
DOUG WOLTER Sports Editor
“It’s changing already,” said Colby Pack. “And it could change even more so in the next five to 10 years if we don’t get more officials. Because there aren’t enough to go around on Friday nights. And you can’t play a football game without an officiating crew.”
The Globe sports reporter
Pack is the athletic director at Fulda High and serves as the head boys basketball and golf coach for the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda squad. The Lamberton native has been a football referee for nearly 20 years, ever since he was a star athlete at Southwest Minnesota State, and along with several brothers he is carrying on a family tradition in athletics established by his father Bryce.
Pack recently worked the Class A state championship football game between Minneota and Mayer Lutheran. It’s not the first Prep Bowl he’s been privileged to work, thanks in part to his creditable crew made up of friends, buddies and former teammates on the Lamberton Long Sox amateur baseball team.
Pack sees his work with a whistle as a way to give back to the sports world that has been so important to him.
“Especially in today’s world, where there’s such a shortage of officials,” he said. “It’s just extremely important now to give back.”
And there are reasons to enjoy it.
“It’s like playing a sport,” he said. “You have to do your studying. And it’s exciting to watch the kids compete at
that level.”
High school sports are more popular than ever. But working as an official, not so much. It’s a problem throughout the state.
Why the shortage?
Well, the pay isn’t significant, certainly not compared with the complaints — both on and off the field — one might hear. To be sure, an official’s
job is pretty much thankless.
“You go to a game and all you hear is yelling from the fans,” Pack said.
For certain, an official’s skin needs to be thick.
“You can’t take everything personally,” Pack explained. “You’ve got to know that kids are going to play with emotion and coaches are going to coach with emotion. It’s a little easier for me,
because I’m an official in one sport and a coach in another, and I know that officials aren’t perfect. We make mistakes.”
He tries never to let the give-and-take with coaches get too heated.
“You’ve got to be able sometimes to agree to disagree and move on to the next play,” Pack said. “And
We begin with the Bluejay wrestlers and the unique situation they find themselves in during this 2021-22 winter campaign. There are several good wrestlers on this team, and if head coach Randy Baker still had the recruits he expected to have in camp, they’d be competing more often and they’d be winning dual meets, too.
Those expectations have vanished, however, because some wrestlers who’d planned to compete decided later, for one reason or another, that they would rather sit out the season.
The point here is not to question anyone’s motives. Wrestling is a tough sport, and it demands a serious commitment. Sometimes a guy feels burned out after high school, and some other times he chooses to focus entirely on academics.
But Worthington area wrestling fans are understandably anxious to see a return to the good ol’ days of Minnesota West wrestling. The sport had suffered in recent years, prior to Baker’s tenure, and last season was another less-than-glorious campaign due in part, at least, to Covid. Baker, who last coached at Jackson County Central High School, has had amazing success in the high school ranks, and I can’t think of a better mentor to return the Jays to prominence. I still think he’ll do it, too. But this year’s season shapes up as a mixed bag.
Some other two-year colleges, unfortunately, find themselves in the same boat. St. John’s, which was scheduled to compete in February at Minnesota West, has canceled its plans.

WORTHINGTON – You’ve gotta be nimble on your feet to be a hockey player, and it helps also to be ready to engage in physical contact.
Andrew Benson, a co-captain on the 2021-22 Worthington High School boys hockey team, learned to skate when he was young. Now a well-built senior who played tight end and defensive end on the fall football team, he easily carries his talents over to the winter sport that combines toughness with finesse.
When asked which positive hockey attributes he most sees in himself, he chooses one –then adds something a little extra.
“I can see the ice really well. I know where all my teammates are at. I know just how to get the puck around, how to keep it flowing,” he explained recently. “The
physical aspect of the game is probably the best part, besides scoring. Yeah, hitting people is fun, the body contact.”
The season is still young for this new Worthington Trojans boys hockey team, so coaches and players are feeling optimistic. The squad posted a 4-16 record a season ago, though it could have been much better with all the close games the Trojans wound up on the wrong side of. This year’s team is more experienced.

West women, men hit their sweet spots
By Doug Wolter dwolter@dglobe.com
WORTHINGTON —
Saturday was a good day for Minnesota West basketball.
After the Lady Jays were soundly defeated 83-40 Friday by Dordt JV, they rolled to an 81-56 victory over Mesabi Range at the Center for Health and Wellness in Worthington. Soon after, the Bluejay men, who soundly defeated Vermilion 99-68 on Friday, withstood a furious comeback by Mesabi for a 93-85 win.
For the women, it was their first MCAC contest of the season, and after losing their first five games, they have now won two of their last three and feel ready for the upcoming Southern Division campaign. The men, meanwhile, are honing in on their style.

They also enjoyed great balance. Point guard MacKensie Post led the Lady Jays with 16 points.
Jadyn Lessman scored 13 and Jayden Zebe had 11. Madisyn Huisman and Kassidy Weeldreyer each added nine points, and Hunter Garcia and Dannyn Peterson both had eight. Weeldreyer and Peterson each had 10 rebounds for the winners.
As a team, West had 25 assists. Lessman, alone, had six.
“Twenty-five assists. We haven’t been there at all,” said head coach Rosalie Hayenga-Hostikka. “I thought we ran the floor, especially in the second half. We ran the floor hard. Got some easy buckets, which helps us. I just thought we did a very good job of ball movement — got the ball inside.”
Huisman agreed that it was a thorough performance.

next play,” Pack said. “And to never hold grudges.”
The best officials?
“They’re the ones that are there for the right reasons and take it seriously,” Pack said. “I didn’t go into coaching to make millions of dollars and I didn’t go into reffing to make millions of dollars. I do it because I enjoy it and because it’s a way to give back to kids and let them play the sports I enjoyed
when I was growing up.
“The best officials are the ones that know they’re not perfect and don’t pretend to be perfect, and try to call what they see and always have an open dialogue with coaches.”
The benefits of working games as an official are subtle, but they’re there.
“It drives my wife (Sarah) crazy when we’re watching a game with our boys (Braiden, 11, and Dylan, 9),” Pack chuckles. “Because our kids now are watching for penalties. They’re looking for
holding all the time, and I don’t think the average fans are doing that.
“It’s kind of fun.”
The problems don’t appear to be going away anytime soon. Pack is hoping more former athletes will decide to get back into the game as referees. And he’s not alone.
A recent radio ad sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League that touts the officials shortage has been running for weeks, attempting to recruit young men and women to the profession. The ad notes the
high school stars who shine, and says there can be no stars without stripes, referring to shirts worn by officials.
“As an AD you try to find officials the minute you get your schedules,” Pack said.
Pack, 38, is no longer an active athlete. He was recently inducted into the SMSU Hall of Fame for his baseball exploits.
But he remains connected to sports in southwest Minnesota. And a lot of that is because he’s an official.
He returns to the goal of
giving back. That, says Pack, is the reason he’s a football official.
“I think it’s like a farmer whose kids have all graduated from the school that continues to vote ‘yes’ for a referendum to build a new school,” he said. “Even though you’re not directly tied to it anymore, if you’re healthy and able it’s just a great way to give back to the sports you love.”

It turns out that St. John’s lacks lightweights this year. Since West lacks wrestlers in the upper weights, there was no real dual meet to plan for.
“It hurts, because you don’t sell your program, because you don’t have local events. It’s frustrating,” said Baker on Sunday.
Other events are also suspect. West will not compete this year at the National Duals in Kentucky next month. With only six wrestlers on the team, the Bluejays would be giving up 24 points in each dual.
Besides that, there are other considerations Baker and the college must think about. For instance, is a trip to Kentucky financially reasonable? Think

Thankfully, Baker did manage to send his team to the Dragon Open at Moorhead last weekend, where 165-pounder Damon Ashworth won his weight class by getting a fall in the finals.
Jacob Vogel, at 141 pounds, placed sixth by going 2-2 with a bye. He wrestled well, said Baker, against some outstanding opponents. Two West 149-pounders, Kyler Grams and Ryan Fierro, each went 0-2. Aiden Reinhart also failed to place at 133.
Incidentally, former Worthington High School standout Jacob Prunty, who’s competing for
the wrestling team’s first home meet of the season, and it’s a triangular meet with Pipestone Area and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg beginning at 5 p.m.

joy. Tony-O and Kitty Kaat are now in the same place as other former Twins Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew, Kirby Puckett and Bert Blyleven, and everyone who remembers Oliva and Kaat’s careers should be saying, in unison, “It’s about time!”
The two newest Twins Hall of Famers were stars of the Sixties. Oliva’s career was spent entirely with the Twins, from 1962-1976, and it was a career cut short due to knee problems, but in his heyday he was one of the best hitters in baseball in an era chocked full of great hitters. If he had been a New York Yankee instead of a Twin, he’d have been in the Hall 40 years ago. Thank goodness he wasn’t forgotten this year by the Golden Days committee.
Kaat won 283 games in 25 major league seasons, and he won 16 Golden Gloves, too.

four decades that Oliva deserved to be in the Hall. He not only was a great player, but since his retirement he’s been an outstanding ambassador for the game. The Cuban native has always been classy, modest and grateful just for the opportunity to play.
He said upon his selection: “My mother, my father, my brothers, some sisters, they never saw me play. I wish they had this opportunity to be here today, but they’re in heaven right now, my father and my mother. They would have been very proud that a little country boy from Cuba is in the Hall of Fame today.”
Perhaps the best part of all of this is that both Oliva and Kaat are alive to enjoy it. Both are 83. The other four new Hall of Famers – Minnie Minoso, Gil Hodges, Buck O’Neil and Bud Fowler –are no longer with us.

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay (“Hell’s Kitchen”) has spent more than two decades of television appearances build ing his reputation as a prickly, potty-mouthed Brit. Naturally, he has expanded his TV hosting empire beyond the borders of food into travel, and this time he has brought two of his buddies along for the ride.
The new special “Gordon Ramsay’s Road Trip: European Vacation,” airing Monday, Dec. 13, on Fox, follows Ramsay and his companions — French service industry expert and host of “Million Pound Menu” Fred Sirieix and Italian celebrity chef and “I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here” winner Gino D’Acampo — as they take a road trip around Europe.
Along the way, the three well-traveled hosts make some eventful stops in their respective homelands. D’Acampo shows Ramsay and Sirieix what Naples’ markets have to offer before they pack up for his friend’s vow renewal on the nearby island of Sardinia. In France, Sirieix is responsible for hosting the very first oyster festival in the seaside town of Arcachon, and has brought along some help in the form of top chefs Ramsay
and D’Acampo. Ramsay, meanwhile, who was born in Scotland, brings his two travel buddies with him to cook for the chief of Clan Ramsay — they also, of course, take part in Ceres’ Highland Games while there.
The three gregarious hosts each show off just how an eventful feast is done in three beautiful — very different — countries, with some healthy competition between them. Each known for being big personalities in their own right, combined they make a team ripe for misadventure.
Sitting down on “The Jonathan Ross Show,” a late-night British TV staple, to discuss filming the series, host Ross wanted to know what Sirieix learned “about food from these guys [Ramsay and D’Acampo], that you didn’t already [know].” Sirieix responds that the two chefs have very “different philosophies,” explaining, “Gordon [Ramsay] is always faster, higher, bigger, and Gino [D’Acampo] is minimum effort, maximum satisfaction.”
Never one to hold back, Ramsay adds that D’Acampo is “lazy,” however it’s all clearly just friendly ribbing among close friends, competitors and travel comrades. And “close” may be an understatement, from what Ramsay revealed in that
same “Jonathan Ross Show” interview.
After eviscerating D’Acampo for his lackluster camper-van driving skills along the Italian leg of their journey, Ramsay shared a story of the night he awoke to find the Italian chef cuddling him during an overnight stay in the vehicle. D’Acampo logically explains to the audience that he “was scared,” while Ross felt the need to ask the trio, “Have the three of you thought about relationship counseling?”
Ramsay is certainly no stranger to the world of culinary travel. In his National Geographic series “Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted,” the celebrity chef treks solo all over the world, met by guides in each locale, and getting his hands dirty while learning about unique regional cuisines and ingredients. He has
explored high-altitude cooking in Peru’s beautiful Sacred Valley and received a lesson in harvesting taro root by foot in Hawaii, to name just a couple of his knowledge-expanding experiences.
In exchange for his one-ofa-kind experiences, the chef gives back with a lovely feast of thanks in each location, bringing his own style to a menu made with uniquely local ingredients. Often the most enjoyable part of the series is seeing the culinary authority try to get the knack of new (to him) methods and measures.
Ramsay is likely the best known of the “European Vacation” travelers this side of the pond, having made a splash with the American versions of his culinary TV shows “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Kitchen Nightmares,” which began airing in

the mid-2000s.
While D‘Acampo’s resume is a bit more varied, having hosted the game show “Gino’s Win Your Wish List” since 2018, he’s always kept a foot firmly planted in the food world (his most popular production is likely the docuseries “Gino’s Italian Escape”).
Sirieix, meanwhile, is best recognized by TV audiences for his appearances on the dating show “First Dates,” in which he offers his thoughts on romance while couples’ first dates are filmed. The maître d’hôtel is also active in charity work focused on equity between front-of-house and back-of-house workers in the service industry.
In other related news, Ramsay and Fox Entertainment announced this past August that they had partnered to create Studio Ramsay Global, which will produce lifestyle and
food programming for Fox’s platforms. This deal expands Ramsay’s production company, Studio Ramsay, which is behind D‘Acampo’s show “Gino’s Italian Family Adventure” and the upcoming Ramsay-hosted competition series “Next Level Chef,” premiering in January on Fox.
Delighted about the new venture, Ramsay said in a Fox news release, “I couldn’t be more excited about this new global partnership with Fox. After 16 incredible years [of] working together, this takes Studio Ramsay to the next level!”
Don’t miss Ramsay, D’Acampo and Sirieix in the delicious special “Gordon Ramsay’s Road Trip: European Vacation” when it premieres Monday, Dec. 13, on Fox. And fans of the special can keep the action going with “Gordon Ramsay’s Road Trip: Christmas Vacation,” airing the following day.

Round Two: Sorry, Shonda Rhimes. The producer’s period drama, “Bridgerton,” used to be Netflix’s top-viewed series until “Squid Game” came along.
Within weeks of landing on the streamer, the Korean drama starring Lee Jung-jae (“Chief of Staff,” 2019), Park Hae-soo (“Prison Playbook”) and model
Jung Hoyeon had already hooked in 111 million fans worldwide with its “win or die trying” twist on Korean children’s games. It’s now Netflix’s biggest series ever, and with that kind of viewership, you’d think a second season would be inevitable.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk (“The Fortress,” 2017) thinks so, too, despite telling Variety a few months back that it was “quite tiring just thinking about” an-
other installment.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang (through a translator) said, “I do have a basic storyline for Season
2 — it’s all in my head — and I am currently in the brainstorming stage. It will happen, someday, but as for when, I cannot tell you the details.”

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX
“The Witcher” - Season 2
After not-so-patiently waiting during this smash-hit series’ two-year break, fans of “The Witcher” can finally rejoice. The popular fantasy series returns to Netflix with its second season on Friday, Dec. 17.
Based on the fantasy novels of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, “The Witcher” was largely popularized by the hit series of PC games, also bearing the same title. Spanning multiple storylines and timelines that weave together into an intricate and gripping tale, the series follows the quests of the infamous monster-hunting witcher, Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill, “Man of Steel,” 2013), his protégé and pseudo-daughter, Ciri (Freya Allan, “Gunpowder Milkshake,” 2021), and the powerful witch Yennifer (Anya Chalotra, “Wanderlust”).
Finally coming together at the end of the last season, Geralt and Ciri are now traveling to Kaer Morhen, the derelict witcher school of the wolf, to train Ciri as the first female witcher. As old and new friends and foes appear along their journey, fans can be certain this new season is as exciting as the first. Also returning this season are Geralt’s bard companion, Jaskier (Joey Batey, “Knightfall”), and witch Triss (Anna Shaffer, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” 2009), who moves into a starring role this season. Created by showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (“The Umbrella Academy”), the new season also stars Graham McTavish (“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,”
2012), Liz Carr (“Silent Witness”), Simon Callow (“Four Weddings and a Funeral,” 1994), Chris Fulton (“Outlaw King,” 2018), Kevin Doyle (“Downton Abbey”), Adjoa Andoh (“Bridgerton”), Cassie Clare (“What Happened to Monday,” 2017), Yasen Atour (“Young Wallander”), Basil Eidenbenz (“The Favourite,” 2018), Mecia Simson (“Brave New World”) and Kim Bodnia (“Killing Eve”).
WHAT’S NEW ON AMC+ “Firebite”
Vampires get a whole new kind of story in the brand-new Australian series “Firebite,” coming to AMC+ on Thursday, Dec. 16. The story follows two indigenous Australian hunters as they go on a journey through the southern Aussie desert to find the last surviving colony of vampires. In the series, British colonial powers sent over shiploads of vampires to eradicate the remaining indigenous populations. While unsuccessful, the vampires created their own civilizations underground in remote areas of the country’s vast outback. As the last remaining colony grows larger and hungrier, Tyson (Rob Collins, “Extraction,” 2020) and Shanika (Shantae Barnes-Cowan, “Total Control”) lead the charge, attempting to do what countless others have failed to do: eradicate the remaining vampire population.
Created, directed and written by Warwick Thornton (“Samson & Delilah,” 2009), the series also stars Callan Mulvey (“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” 2016), Thibul Nettle (“Friendship Love and Loyalty,” 2016) and Yael Stone (“Orange is the New Black”).

that as confirmation of a Season 2, but Netflix responded by say ing, “A second season is in discussions but not confirmed yet.”
Despite the lack of an official confirmation, fans have been looking for any signs of more “Squid Game” to come, and they were encouraged that the thriller is being put forward as an awards contender in the Drama
Series category rather than as a limited series.
And if there is a Season 2 to come, what storylines could we expect to see?
Hwang previously talked about the possibility of sharing the backstories for secondary characters like the Front Man (Gong Yoo, “Train to Busan,” 2016), but for now, the creator would only tease this general idea: “What I can say is that Gi-
hun [Lee’s character] is going to be back, and he will do something for the world.”
Back to ‘La Brea’: Far from a ratings sinkhole, NBC’s disaster drama “La Brea” has proven to be a solid performer since its debut earlier this fall. As a reward for pulling in good ratings, NBC has decided to renew the freshman series for a second season.
That makes “La Brea” the first
rookie of the 2021-22 broadcast season to score a renewal. The No. 1 fall show for viewers aged 18 to 49, it pulls in an average of roughly 7.9 million viewers per episode (including seven-day delayed viewing numbers).
At a recent event, Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content at NBCUniversal Television, told reporters, “This was a big swing that captured audiences’ attention, and we’re
excited to let fans know there’s more to come in Season 2.”
The NBC series, which has been described as “Lost” meets “Land of the Lost,” centers on a family that has been torn apart by the appearance of a massive sinkhole in Los Angeles. After being sucked through a time rift and into a primeval world, the displaced Angelenos must work together in order to survive and find a way back home.
