The Searcy Regional Chamber of Commerce is pleased to provide you with information on Searcy and White County. We hope that you will find that Searcy is a natural fit for you, your family or your business. Searcy is the largest city in White County and is the county seat. According to the 2010 Census the population of Searcy is 22,858. We have a vibrant downtown area that is steeped in history, with a quaint mix of offices, restaurants and retail shops to enjoy. The imposing White County Courthouse is a downtown landmark. It is the oldest functioning courthouse in the state and is listed on the National Register. State- of-the-art health care facilities have allowed our area to become a major referral center for the north central part of the state. Our community has been fortunate to recently welcome a new Veteran’s Clinic and the Cancer Center of Excellence. The health services in our area continue to grow and offer services in nearly every specialty, which allows our citizens to seek care at home. Searcy takes great pride in our award winning public and private educational institutions. Our well regarded public school district offers students a strong academic base and a variety of extracurricular activities. Harding University is a private, higher-academic, christian university affiliated with the Churches of Christ and the state's largest private university. Searcy is also home to Arkansas State University- Searcy, a technical campus of nearby Arkansas State University Beebe which offers several two and four year programs.

Manufacturing and distribution employs about 10% of our workforce. Several major employers contribute to Searcy’s diverse industrial and commercial sector. WalMart operates two distribution centers in Searcy and is the second largest employer in our area. In addition, our area has been blessed with a gas exploration boom that began in 2006. It has sheltered our area from many of the economic woes that other communities have faced. Located in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, Searcy is surrounded by rivers, lakes, mountains and forests, which allows for a host of recreational and outdoor activities for the whole family. Searcy’s gently rolling terrain supports a humid, sub-tropical climate during most of the year with relatively short, mild winters and long, warm summers. The City of Searcy operates under a Mayor/Council form of government. The Mayor serves a four-year term and eight Aldermen serve two-year terms. The Mayor is responsible for management of all the city's departments and funds. City administration is with Council approval. The city is served by a 67 member Police Department and a 60 member Fire Department. Searcy Fire Department has a Central Fire Station and two substations in the city. We are currently rated a Public Protection Class 1 by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). Searcy is proud to be the only municipal department in the state of Arkansas with a Class 1 rating. The City also operates the following departments: Street, Sanitation, Code Enforcement, Parks and Recreation, White County Regional Library, Searcy Municipal Airport, Animal Control, Engineering and Information Technology. You may obtain more information on the city and services offered by visiting www.searcy.com. The White County government provides services to all citizens in the county. Departments and agencies include: Cooperative Extension Service, County Roads, County Schools, Department of Public Welfare, Health Department, Detention Center, Office of Emergency Services, Juvenile Probation Officer and Voter Registration. The County Judge is the Chief Executive Officer for the county and serves a two-year term. The residents elect a county-wide legislative body called the Quorum Court, composed of 13 Justices of the Peace, each representing a geographic district within the county. Together, the County Judge and the Justices of the Peace govern the county. 12

Inside City of Searcy residents will receive a 2 time a week pick-up on household trash pick-up. Please call the Sanitation Department at 279-1000 to obtain your route schedule.
A Commercial Shredder is now available at the Searcy Recycle Center. Protect yourself against Identity Theft - Bring your important papers & documents. Call ahead to get your documents shredded while you watch - 279-1070.
The City of Searcy offers free brush and junk removal. Please have these items in separate piles at your curbside and contact the Sanitation Department to have your piles scheduled for pick-up. Please make sure that limbs are no longer than 6ft in length. The Sanitation Department does not pick-up concrete, dirt, tires or any kind of masonry items or hazardous chemicals. If you need to dispose of paint products please follow these instructions: make sure liquid paint is in a solid form before calling the Sanitation Department for removal. You can obtain this by putting dirt, sand, kitty litter or shredded newspaper into the can to make the paint into a solid matter…please place can with lid off at curbside and call the Sanitation Department to schedule pick-up. ELECTRONIC RECYCLING (E-CYCLING) The Searcy Recycling center is taking a proactive approach by being one of only six ELECTRONIC recycling locations in the state. Suggested items for e-cycling are TVs, VHS and DVD players, computers and all computer hardware, cameras, cell phones, fax machines, etc. Electronics, especially TVs and computers, contain hazardous materials-including mercury, nickel, cadmium, chromium, and lead-that can contaminate soil, ground water & the air if not disposed of properly.

RECYCLING The Searcy Recycle Center accepts recyclables from White, Cleburne, Woodruff and Jackson Counties. The items listed below can be dropped off at the Recycle Center: Paper-Newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, office and school paper and phone books, can be recycled. Wet paper can't be recycled! Cardboard-corrugated only (flatten and okay wet or dry, Plastic Bottles (must have a neck), milk, juice, ketchup, detergent, lotion, etc (remove lid & empty contents), aluminum cans (empty contents, leave pop tabs on, no need to crush), steel / tin cans (empty contents, rinse clean, drop metal lid into can and leave labels on). No dairy tubs, auto fluids or pesticide bottles. All recycling and e-cycling can be dropped off at the recycle center, Monday thru Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 409 West Beebe Capps Expressway. (At the intersection of Elm St.) Recycle materials (not electronics) are picked up at curbside within the city limits. Call the Recycling Center at 501-279-1070 to find out the pick-up day for your location and to get your free recycling bins!

Holiday of Lights Festival Searcy hosts the Holiday of Lights Festival from the last week of November through December. It features a lighting ceremony complete with a lighted parade, pageant and craft show held in the Carmichael

The Parks and Recreation Department maintains nearly 240 acres for residents and visitors to enjoy. They are a great place to take your family for outdoor play.

Spring Sing
Spring Sing is an annual musical production held during Easter Weekend, featuring performances by the Harding University’s social clubs. Typically, over 10,000 people attend the show. Each year, an overall theme is selected, and each club develops music and dance routines for the show. Each club act is judged, and according to their performance, each club is awarded a certain amount of money. The clubs then donate this money to charities of their choice.

ARKANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Arkansas State University-Beebe was established in 1927 and is located approximately 17 miles south of Searcy. Today, ASU-Beebe provides educational opportunities at four different locations, including ASUSearcy, A Technical Campus of ASUBeebe.
Several educational opportunities are available at both the ASU-Beebe and ASU-Searcy campuses. The ASUBeebe campus serves students who are working on an associate's degree, earning college credit for transfer to a four year university, or students pursuing career training through an associate's degree. In addition, ASU-Jonesboro offers bachelor and master degree programs on the Beebe campus. In addition, residents find quality health services at the White County Health Department and through other local healthcare providers and clinics. The health department offers a wide variety of services, from adult health maintenance and immunizations to family clinics and home health care. They are located at 112 Brantly Road and they are open 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There are two Urgent Care Offices in Searcy offering medical care after hours and on weekends. Over 20 dentists practice in the area covering general dentistry, orthodontics and oral/maxillofacial surgery. CANCER CENTER OF EXCELLENCE Several years ago, White County Medical Center and the White County Medical Foundation recognized the need for a central location for patients to receive medical care and treatment for cancer. That vision became a reality in October of 2011, on WCMC’s South Campus on South Main Street.

COMMERCIAL BUSINESS As in its early days, Searcy continues to be a major trade center for local residents and others living in outlying areas. There are many shopping areas, a wide range of restaurants and other businesses ready to serve you. Chili’s, McAlister’s, JCPenneys, Lowes and Staples are just a few of the national chains that call Searcy home. The searcy area also boast a neat mix of boutiques, local restaurants and specialty stores. Our stable economic base and increase in population has allowed commercial businesses to flourish in our area. A boom in the hotel industry occurred increasing the number of rooms available to nearly 850 units. The downtown area offers a quaint mix of eating establishments, retail stores, business offices and financial institutions. The Main Street Searcy Program strives to keep businesses in the downtown area and works to secure grants to help maintain the appearance of our downtown. MANUFACTURING & INDUSTRY

Manufacturing and Distribution comprise approximately 10% of the employment in our area. Our community was thrilled when the Yarnell Ice Cream Company was acquired by Schulze and Burch Biscuit Company. Yarnells had been in business in Searcy from 1932 until 2011, when they filed bankruptcy. Under the new ownership they began production in the spring of 2012 using the original recipes and many former employees.
