Feel-Good Factor Trade exhibitions such as Bauma, ConExpo and PlantworX serve a multitude of purposes. For manufacturers and dealers exhibiting at such shows, they are an opportunity to showcase their wares; to demonstrate the latest kit to have joined the range; a chance to press the flesh with existing customers and forge new relationships with new ones.

For visitors, it is an opportunity to gauge trends, identify exciting new opportunities and to formulate a shopping list or a wish list for future purchases.

But there is another facet to these shows. It is a facet that is rarely spoken about but it is as important as it is tangible. And that factor is both gauging and even influencing market sentiment. As a regular at these shows, I can vouch for the fact that a construction equipment exhibition during a recession is a desperate place. Visitor numbers plummet; those that do attend seem to be there primarily to avoid the harsh realities of life; and even bitter rival manufacturers huddle together for comfort. But I recently returned from a visit to the Intermat exhibition in Paris (you can see the highlights in this exclusive video: https://youtu.be/mI0IIvJrUTY). Despite French transport strikes (quelle surprise) that threatened to impact visitor numbers, the exhibition centre was rocking. The show was heaving with people and the halls and demonstration areas were packed to the rafters with new equipment. And while Intermat is very French and significantly less international than, say, Bauma that feel-good factor is present here in the UK too. A recent report from market intelligence provider The Builders’ Conference proves that new contract awards in the UK construction sector have not dipped below £4 billion in each of the first five months of the year, heralding an unprecedented period of stability in a business normally beset with peaks and troughs. At the time of writing, the organisers of the Hillhead exhibition are preparing to throw open the doors to the UK’s biggest show of the year. According to advanced press releases, some of which you will see later in this edition, visitors will be treated to a plethora of new equipment and some superb demonstrations. If the weather holds (and let’s not forget that Hillhead is a location that can inflict both sunburn AND frostbite, sometimes in the same day), Hillhead could yet help permeate a feel-good factor through the industry. We hope to see you there.

Awa rd Winning Doosan

DIGGERS & DOZERS

Working in the Doosan outside demonstration area at Intermat 2018, the 30 tonne DX300LC-5 crawler excavator has won the Lowest Cost of Ownership Award for the Excavators Crawler Medium category in a new annual series of awards organised by EquipmentWatch, a world leader in data, software and insights for the heavy equipment industry.

The Lowest Cost of Ownership Awards are the industry’s only accolade of their kind, based on empirical data regarding the long-term cost of heavy and compact equipment. Nominees were recognised within 15 different categories of machine that exhibit the lowest cost of ownership over a five year span.

Total cost of ownership is one of the most important aspects that buyers take into account when they purchase equipment and the award won by the DX300LC-5 shows why Doosan equipment is always rated highly for great performance and value-for-money. The award is a further illustration of why Doosan is one of the world’s top construction equipment manufacturers. Many of the reasons behind the DX300LC-5 winning the Excavators Crawler Medium Award are evident in the greatly improved performance it offers compared to the previous ‘LC-3’ Stage IIIB model. The DX300LC-5 is powered by the Doosan DL08 6-cylinder diesel engine, with an output of 202 kW of power at 1800

rpm, providing a huge 27% increase in engine power and a massive 30% boost in torque over the LC-3 model. The engine meets Stage IV emission regulations without the need of a diesel particulate filter (DPF), through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalyst reduction (SCR) after-treatment technologies.

quarry applications), the oil bath (9.5 l) pre-cleaner is available as an option to remove dust from the air intake, extending air cleaner servicing intervals dramatically. To avoid permanent engine damage, an acoustic alarm has been added to call the operator’s attention to ‘water in fuel’. If the operator ignores the signal after several alerts, the engine and pump are automatically derated.

New innovative and exclusive features have been introduced in the DX300LC-5, leading to huge reductions in fuel consumption amounting to an average of 10% compared to the Stage IIIB machine.

The DX300LC-5 is factory-installed with the Doosan Connect state-of-the-art wireless fleet monitoring system. The Doosan Connect system offers a web-based fleet management solution which is very useful for monitoring the performance and security of machines and promoting preventative maintenance. It is available as a standard feature on all new generation Doosan Stage IV compliant excavators (from 14 tonne), all new generation Doosan Stage IV compliant wheel loaders and the new generation Doosan Stage IV compliant ADTs.

Among these features is the new ‘Trip Meter Setting’ screen which allows operators to check fuel consumption daily (or over a desired period) directly from the control panel; the new Auto Shut-Off provides an automatic shut down for the engine after a pre-set time when the machine has been idling for a specified time (3 to 60 minutes configurable by the operator); and to save even more fuel, there is a special Doosan-developed system, SPC (Smart Power Control), to optimise the balance between the pumps’ output and the diesel engine.

As well as the Excavators Crawler Medium category won by the DX300LC-5, other categories included those entitled Backhoes, Dozers Track Large and Motor Graders. The S70 skid-steer loader and MT55 mini track loader from Doosan’s sister company, Bobcat, won the Lowest Cost of Ownership Awards in the categories entitled Skid Steer Loaders and Loaders Compact Track, respectively.

Doosan has also added protection to the inner cab air filter and redesigned the cab airconditioning filters for easier replacement. Recommended for dusty environments (such as

right of +/- 15° and +/- 8°, respectively. The fully hydraulic design of the self-levelling planers ensures all functions can be controlled from the operator seat. The self-levelling system also offers the advantage of maintaining a constant planing depth, independent of the position of the planer, even, for example, when the loader lift arm position changes or when the loader drives over bumps or debris.

The new PSL120 shares the same features as the existing PSL100 100 cm width model, with selflevelling, side-shift and tilting and is ideal for road maintenance, where the increased width can provide 20% more productivity.

The expanded family of self-levelling models is part of a wide range of planers from Bobcat for high flow models from 45-120 cm in width, providing increased productivity for maintenance and repair work on asphalt and concrete surfaces. Bobcat planers are designed for a range of applications from milling surfaces to repairing potholes and cracks and for work around manholes. Other uses include creating cuts for recessed lane markers; matching uneven pavement surfaces; producing vertical edges for pavement repairs; cutting drainage in parking lots and for tapering edges of roadways.

Both planers are compatible with the Bobcat water kit, which also comes in two new versions to match the PSL50 and PSL120, respectively. The new PSL50 50 cm self-levelling planer is approved for use on Bobcat S530H, S550H, S570H, S590H, S630H, S650H, S770H and S850H skidsteer loaders; the T590H, T650H, T770H and T870H compact tracked loaders and the A770H all-wheel steer loader. Drax’s Double Volvo A Volvo L120H and a L150H have been supplied to Rail Freight Services on a long term contract for Lytag, handling pulverized fuel ash (Fly Ash) at Drax power station near Selby in Yorkshire.

Both machines are six months into a long term contract at Lytag’s bespoke ash processing plant and are proving to be the right machines of choice for the job in hand. The 20-tonne L120H is deployed loading fly ash into the plant where it is mixed with a binding agent (bentonite), pelletized, then burnt at around 1,100ºC and separated into various sizes of product. The larger 25-tonne L150H is in charge of the stock yard, unloading the bays of separated material, carrying to the stockyard and loading out onto road going wagons. In all some 3,000 tonnes of material per week is being moved between the two machines. Since the raw material has a light material density of around 0.5

14

tonnes m³, both machines have been equipped with large capacity high tip buckets of 5m³ and 7m³ respectively. Powered by Stage-IV final Volvo 8 and 13-litre engines, developing 276hp in the L120H and 300hp in the L150H, both machines are coupled with Volvo designed and manufactured powertrain components. These, along with other fuel saving devices such as the Volvo Eco pedal which encourage the operator to run the machine at its optimum rpm in the engine’s torque curve and optishift with torque converter lock-up found in the larger L150H, make them highly efficient and productive loading shovels in their size class. automatic braking systems, boom suspension and hydraulic attachment brackets enabling both machines to revert to standard general purpose buckets if required. “We have much experience operating Volvo products which have given us a high degree of reliability and longevity, so when we decided to purchase the right machines for this particular project, choosing the L120H and L150H with all the service support and backup we can rely on from SMT GB made perfect sense,” says Rail Freight Services Managing Director, Jim Flatman. Both machines have been supplied with a Blue Volvo service agreement ensuring that they will be regularly maintained at the correct service intervals by Volvo trained service engineers using genuine Volvo parts. They join other Volvo excavators and loading shovels in Rail Freight Services’ overall fleet of some 70 items of mobile plant.

High Walking Hyundai

Essex based, Kingwell Holdings, headed up by founder and Managing Director, Justin Kingwell, have become renowned as a highly specialised forestry and site clearance firm, having worked on a wide variety of large contracts across the UK.

The company runs some impressive specialised kit including AHWI tracked mulchers. In terms of excavators the company has run a number of different makes over the years including Kobelco, Doosan and Hitachi, but in more recent times they have turned to Hyundai. “I was on the lookout for a 20 tonne Kobelco machine back in 2007, but at the time the dealer was not going to be able to deliver for a long time,” says Kingwell. “By pure chance I drove past Ernest Doe’s depot in Ulting Essex and I noticed they had some Hyundai 20-tonners parked in their yard, I called in and bought it on the spot, we like them and that’s the

16

reason we have stuck with the brand to this day.” One of the latest additions to the fleet is a custom built 26-tonne Hyundai HX260HW which was supplied by dealers Molson Group. This impressive machine is powered by a Stage 4 Final emissions compliant Cummins QSB6.7 engine which offers a power output rating of 142kw / 190hp. The HW (High Walker) is specifically designed for forestry work and features a heavy duty raised undercarriage with additional track guards, it also has a raised turret which leaves more gap between the undercarriage and upper-structure. A full FOPS cab guard has been fitted and

Justin also specified a short dipper for increased breakout force, a bucket ram guard is also fitted. The HX260HW has joined two other Hyundai excavators in the Kingwell fleet a heavily modified R210-9 and an older R210-7A. the Dash 7 model is the oldest machine on the fleet, but it’s highly regarded by Justin and his team having clocked up over 10,000 hours on the meter, in fact Justin describes it as their most reliable machine ever! But it’s the new HX260HW which really steals the show these days and its built-in technology is very impressive, especially in terms of safety with its AAVM (Around View Monitoring System) Justin said, “The all-around camera system is brilliant, a very good safety tool which our operators are really seeing the benefits in. Due to the machines high build your visibility to ground level can be restricted, which means ground crew can sneak up on you quite easily. But thanks to the AAVM camera view

which is displayed on the monitor, the operator can instantly see if people are entering your work area, so it offers great peace of mind to the operator.” This machine was specially built at the manufacturers South Korean factory, with some additional UK specific modifications, conducted by Molson in Bristol, to suit the needs of Kingwell Holdings and the work they do. According to Justin it is capable of lifting incredibly heavy attachments, whilst still remaining very stable through its full working arc, it’s also very fast and powerful with it and without doubt the fastest machine they have ever run for pulling out stumps. The machine excelled itself on a site clearance project with a tight deadline last year on the Deepcut Link Road project in Surrey, where it tree sheared and stacked large pine trees, and then de-stumped the site ahead of the company’s AHWI mulchers in record time.

18

“We spec the machines now and Molson put everything together for us in one package, so it’s all covered under warranty, which suits us much better, I just cannot fault the service we get from them,” says Kingwell. Having spent somewhere in the region of £300K on Hyundai kit and an additional £40k on modifications it’s probably safe to say that they are big fans of the brand. During his 26 years in the industry Justin has worked for many major contractors but some time ago decided to take his business in a different direction – which for Kingwell Holdings is far more reliable and lucrative. “Tree clearance is now a thing of the past really, because so many are now doing it, for very little money, the real money is in the stump processing and other difficult works, and it’s in this sector that we aim to become even more specialised than we already are.”

Volvo Becomes Champion

Champion Groundworks Ltd of Doublebois, Liskeard, in Cornwall continues its association with Volvo Construction Equipment products with the addition of the their third twenty-five tonne excavator in the guise of an EC250E, a pair of smaller EC140Es and two A30G articulated haulers with a third unit on order.

This association has been running since around 2014 and Champion Groundworks is continuing to enlarge its plant fleet with more and more Volvo machines. “In our opinion, the Volvo excavators and articulated haulers are competitively priced and, more importantly, SMT GB demonstrates a sound after sales support which is important for us considering where we are located in the country,” says Procurement Manager, Will Evans. “Furthermore our operators certainly appreciate the comfortable cabs, the overall smooth control of the machines and responsiveness,” says Evans. Whilst the smaller fourteen tonne EC140Es are perfect for working on footings for house builds and the laying of services such as drainage, water and sewers, many of the projects Champion Groundworks is engaged on demand the use of a larger muck shifting excavator. They have consequently just taken delivery of their third twenty-five tonne Volvo excavator in the guise of the latest EC250E which is ideally matched to load the company’s resident A25 and A30 articulated haulers. The new EC250E is powered by a Stage-IV eight-cylinder engine developing 213hp. Operators can select the best work mode for the task at hand, ensuring optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Hill’s Mini Coupler Hill Engineering has been designing and manufacturing excavator attachments since 1994. Up until now the company’s award-winning TEFRA quick couplers were designed to fit midi to heavyline excavators ranging from 3T to 120T. The company has recently introduced the new 2T TEFRA coupler designed for excavators ranging from 1.4T up to 2.5T depending on the dimensions of the excavator. The new fully automatic hydraulic 2T mini coupler is aimed at the ever-increasing mini excavator market and is based on the original TEFRA, which since its introduction in 2012, has transformed health & safety on construction sites around the world – TEFRA’s dual safety features are unique within the industry and with only three moving parts – it has proven to reduce downtime extensively

and make customers more productive in their operations.

and not ‘passive’ in the way it works.

The safety systems in the TEFRA eliminate one of the most dangerous aspects of handling attachments, which is the risk of attachments coming away completely. Hill Engineering solved this by using a positive locking system rather than a gravity locking system, making the crucial safety feature ‘active’

“We decided to introduce this new coupler because of the number of requests we were receiving from customers – so its introduction was led by demand from the mini market,” says engineering manager, Neal Loughran. “The 2T coupler basically has the same components as the larger

We now have a fully functional and working product that has been rigorously tested and has been well accepted. We will have our 2T coupler ready for the mass market by mid-summer.” The dimensions of the new 2T Coupler are Pin diameter – 30 – 35mm, Pick up centre range – 118 – 143mm and Bottom frame width – 99+2mm. “We developed the new mini TEFRA as our customers were asking for a coupler that used the technology and quality of the larger couplers we manufacture – but one that would fit a mini excavator – so its introduction really was based around market demand,” says sales & marketing manager, Oliver Phelan. “We are extremely pleased with the design of the new 2T TEFRA and the customer feedback we have had to date has been very positive. We are currently making variants of the coupler for Takeuchi, Kubota, JCB, Hitachi and Cat machines and we plan to

Terex Trucks is set to return to Hillhead once again – this time, to showcase the latest TA300 alongside the vintage R17 hauler. “We are excited to be at Hillhead this year, it’ll be a good opportunity to show customers what the Terex Trucks brand is all about,” says Paul Douglas, Managing Director of Terex Trucks. “Having the R17 on our stand gives visitors a rare opportunity to take a glimpse into the history of hauling.

creating quality trucks that are built to last.” Occupying stand N14, Terex Trucks will be joined by its official UK dealer, TDL Equipment, which will be located on stand A7.

Terex Trucks’ heritage can be traced back to 1934 when the world’s first off-road dump truck was created.

“Since the very beginning, TDL’s ethos has been to provide local support on a national basis – and that’s something we still strive towards today,” says John Black, Sales Director at TDL Equipment. “This, together with our partnership with Terex Trucks, means that we are able to offer haulers to our customers that help them to provide an enhanced level of service to their own customers.”

“It’s not often that you get to see a 40-year-old truck that’s still in working condition; we hope this highlights the level of quality we build into our machines. Of course, our current machine, the TA300 articulated hauler, will take pride of place too and shows that we remain committed to

The changes in the new DA30 ADT model are signified by a new colour scheme for the machine that also aligns it with other products in the Doosan Heavy range. Most of the changes are aimed at enhancing operator comfort and the controllability of the machine, but there are also changes in the driveline and electrical systems. The most important development is in the suspension of the DA30 which is being upgraded to a hydro-gas self-levelling system to provide outstanding performance and superior shock absorption for better driving comfort, especially when the truck is being driven when it is empty. To complement this, the operator will now benefit from a Grammer Actimo XXL seat in the cab as standard with its own independent low-frequency pneumatic and wide scissors-type suspension.

addition, the new cab tilting system enables the service technician to lift and close the cab in just a few minutes. With these new features incorporated, the DA30 establishes a unique benchmark in load carrying performance, fuel efficiency, enhanced controllability and high operator comfort, together with improved reliability, durability and reduced maintenance and servicing costs. Doosan has announced a wide range of new safety and ergonomic features on all six large Doosan wheel loaders including the DL300-5, DL350-5, DL420-5, DL450-5, DL550-5 and DL580-5 models. A number of the new features are aimed at increased safety and visibility in and around the operator’s cab. For example, a new handrail has been installed around the cab roof with three holding points, allowing operators to move very safely all around the cab to clean windows and to perform other tasks.

The cab also offers new safety and performance functions with a more comfortable control panel with a power cut off switch and an LED indication lamp which indicates when it is safe to switch off the power cut off. Other features include a new easyto-use lever for retarder steering, a new more precise brake system for increased sensitivity and performance, an extra hand grip on the right hand side, a USB charger and a 12V/24V power socket, together with more convenient compartment storage and electrically adjustable mirrors as standard.

Inside the cab, there is a new ergonomic joystick control with a progressive thumb wheel added for the auxiliary hydraulic line (3rd valve). The progressive thumb wheel ensures that no additional lever is needed, providing the easiest combination of movements to manage the 3rd valve operations. FNR control has been relocated on the back of the joystick, via a three-position rocker switch, which is much more convenient and intuitive to use.

On the outside of the cab, a new all-round hand grip rail has been installed for improved safety for moving round the outside of machine for cleaning and other tasks. Doosan has also introduced a new position and solution for the power cut off switch.

Along with the new features in the large wheel loaders, Doosan has implemented a restyling for all the models in the company’s wheel loader range. The new styling scheme involves a change of colour (from orange to dark grey) for the front lift arm, front frame and front and rear axle components on the machines. The more dynamic curved lines of the new styling are designed to reinforce the robustness and power of the Doosan wheel loader range.

According to Doosan, in the new version of the DA30, there will be lower running costs involved as there are a reduced number of service points with fewer different oil types in the driveline and increased intervals for transmission oil change. In

Cemex’s Volvo A60H The very first Volvo A60H articulated hauler to be sold in Great Britain was delivered to CEMEX UK during November last year and has been pulling out all the stops at the company’s Halkyn Quarry, Calderdale, Flintshire.

Previewed for the first time at Hillhead 2016, the 55 tonne capacity hauler was trialed earlier last year by CEMEX UK to assess the suitability of introducing an articulated hauler of this size to the operations at Halkyn and proved to be a success in all areas of the quarry’s production.

up in the quarry which will involve large scale muck shifting to expose virgin rock for extraction – a task that cannot be viably undertaken by rigid haulers. Since its initial delivery in November 2017 CEMEX UK has been monitoring the all- round performance of the A60H in terms of its productivity and fuel efficiency. Thus far the articulated hauler is exceeding all of the quarry’s expectations.

Specifically for CEMEX UK the A60H has had additional features fitted to it including an Ardent fire suppression system, Groeneveld automatic greasing and 200mm side extensions coupled to a cantilever tailgate increasing the hauler’s body capacity to 39m³. Thus configured the truck is capable of handling all of the hauling duties on site which include hauling blasted material from the face to the primary crusher and running under the bins to receive various sized material from the secondary crusher. The A60H will also be deployed on developing new areas being opened

“Opting for the A60H articulated hauler instead of another sixty tonne rigid truck has been a success here at Halkyn,” says Quarry Manager Andrew Edwards. “The A60H is giving us tremendous flexibility in all the areas of our production whether it is hauling directly from the face, moving secondary material from the bins or working on

As a company, they are all about people, which means they always go the extra mile to give their customers a fantastic service. In addition to this, B-C Equipment Sales has longevity. Having been a leading supplier of construction equipment for more than 30 years, customers can be assured that they will be around to support their machines for the long haul.” B-C Equipment Sales is and always has been a familyrun business. NEW JCB LiveLink JCB today launches a brand new version of its LiveLink telematics system which enables mixed fleet operators to control all of their plant and equipment with one network. system. JCB will also provide several Developer Toolkit services to assist with integrating machine data into existing systems and rental or fleet management software. “Many customers run mixed fleets and most manufacturers now offer a form of telematics support,” says JCB’s Managing Director Parts and Service, Ian Sayers. “This means fleet operators can be faced with a range of complex data, often in different formats. This invariably means logging into and viewing several incompatible systems in order to get a comprehensive overview of the entire fleet’s performance, whereabouts and service requirements. “The new JCB Control Tower eradicates this problem by consolidating information from across a complete fleet on to a single dedicated system. This allows those responsible for fleet management to interpret data from multiple sources, enabling more informed, more effective and faster decision making.” JCB LiveLink is JCB’s own telematics system and is used on over 160,000 JCB machines worldwide and boasting more than 70,000 logins per month. Now these same remote machine monitoring benefits are available to customers who also operate non-JCB equipment. The new JCB LiveLink Control Tower system allows fleet owners to seamlessly import fleet data from any telematics system compliant with the Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP) Telematics standard V1.2. All machine information – whether JCB or competitive equipment – can then be displayed and interpreted in one secure, intuitive web portal or integrated into a user’s own IT

Flip Flow Fortis TFortis IBA Ltd has recently invested in a Liwell Flip Flow Technology Screen for their A303 IBA Processing Facility in Hampshire. The A303 facility currently processes 120,000 tonnes of bottom ash from Energy from Waste Facilities each year, transforming the ash into a sustainable recycled aggregate which is used in construction projects.

Fortis IBA Ltd, resourced the project internally, undertaking extensive research within the European materials separation technology markets prior to the investment. It was critical to ensure that the investment would significantly increase metallic extraction rates and improve processing efficiencies, whilst enhancing the engineering properties of the final IBA Aggregate products.

A series of trials were carried out using a number of different screening and separation solutions from the UK and Europe. After a lengthy evaluation process, Tema (Machinery) Ltd were selected to carry out further detailed trials at the A303 IBA Processing Facility using their mobile version of the Liwell Screener. The trials proved highly successful in meeting the expectations and requirements of Fortis IBA Ltd. The Fortis

on IBA and to draw on the German experience working at very small separations,” says ParryJones.

Supplied by Tema (Machinery) Ltd who are based at Woodford Halse, near Daventry, the Liwell 2.0 x 6.0m double deck flip flow screening machine (Model LF2.0-5.76/18DD) was installed at the Barton Stacey site, close to the A303 in Hampshire at the end of December 2017.

“However, it became apparent to Fortis IBA that cleaning the feed on its own would not be justification for the investment and sought an improvement on the metals recovery at Barton Stacey. The test facility was again hired in to look at the possibility of separations much smaller than was thought possible with this material and the Liwell screen proved they could make those reductions in separation size and recover more metals.”

The investment in the Liwell® Flip Flow Screener followed extensive on-site testing with the Hein Lehmann test facility with the design and build contract awarded to European Active Projects Ltd. (EAPL) of Southampton with final commissioning taking place in mid-January.

“We are continually looking at new ways of developing our processes to improve our metallic recovery rates and overall processing efficiencies,” says General Operations Manager, Terry Moore. “We produce high-quality IBA Aggregates and the introduction of the Liwell screen has refined our processes further. Successfully separating smaller IBA fractions improves recovery rates and reduces maintenance and downtime. We are delighted with the performance of the Liwell screen and are achieving the anticipated improvements in recovery and efficiency.”

“Initially, the remit was to clean the feed material entering the plant, but more specifically the feed to the -5mm Eddy Current Separators (ECS) which required frequent cleaning, which was impacting on process continuity and costs,” says Simon Parry-Jones, Sales Engineer for Tema Ltd. “We invited Terry Moore, General Operations’ Manager at Fortis to visit a similar facility in Germany to see many Liwell screens operating

They also benefit from longer operating times which results in decreased brake and axle fatigue. In addition to being more fuelefficient the new HL Series has many other environmentally friendly features. Automatic shutdown of engine prevents unnecessary fuel consumption and emissions. The HL Series turns off the engine when it enters into an ‘idling’ state. Operators can select operating mode and ‘idling’ time depending on work environments which improves its efficiency even further. The standard five Speed transmission with Lock-up Clutch on this machine also aids fuel consumption depending on the working conditions. The ECO Gauge feature enables consistent economic operation through frequent checks of the

machine’s operating state. The ECO gauge level changes colour with the engine torque and fuel efficiency level. In addition, it monitors fuel consumption, such as average rate and the total amount of fuel consumed which are displayed on the monitor. Silent, safe and comfortable, the 10% larger ROPS/ FOPS new cabin with fully adjustable seat provides an ergonomic working environment that offers the ultimate in comfort for the operator. The new cabin is fully sound-proofed using state-of-the-art noise reduction technology which ensures maximum silence when working in noisy environments such as quarries or waste handling depots. The new air conditioning system maximises heating and cooling performance by optimising air flow through the cabin.

The HL960 HD is optimised to enable operators to access accurate equipment data in quick time. The intelligent seven-inch touch wide screen monitor is like a smart phone display and is larger than the previous models. The Audio System, which includes a radio, has an integrated Bluetooth hands free feature, and a built-in microphone allowing the operator to safely take and make calls when in the cab. The ‘Infotainment’ system also allows the operator to enjoy the Miracast system which works via the WiFi of the operator’s smart phone and enables easy use of the smart phones features on the big screen including navigation, web surfing, watching videos and listening to music.

ATLAS sells its Transverse Cutter business to Kinshofer Atlas GmbH from Ganderkesee, Germany sells its Schaeff Transverse Cutter business to Kinshofer GmbH based in Waakirchen, Germany. As a strategic measure Atlas has decided to put more focus on its core business, excavators and cranes in times of increasing momentum. Therefore the decision was made to divest its well-established and renowned transverse cutter business. Schaeff Atlas’ transverse cutters are still known as the foundation of these kinds of products. The broad range of transverse cutters and the reliable performance of each model are very much appreciated by Atlas’ customers in mining, construction, landscaping, tunneling and in particular demolition. Therefore it was paramount for Atlas to find a competent manufacturer that is capable to deliver on the promise of high quality, performance and further product range development. This manufacturer was found in Kinshofer. Kinshofer is known as a leading manufacturer to all these industries with innovative products its customers benefit from.

The transverse cutters close a gap in Kinshofer broad range of demolition tools, i.e. the Demarec MQP and DRG range or Kinshofer’s HPXdrive grapple range. But also other product segments such as landscaping and construction will benefit from this addition. In fact these three product segments account for the largest portion of Kinshofer’s wide product portfolio.

Kinshofer will also service units sold by Atlas with technical support as well as spare and wear parts which are now available through the Kinshofer network. Both, Brahim Stitou, President & CEO of Atlas GmbH and Thomas Friedrich, President & CEO of the Kinshofer Group, expressed their delight about this transaction and are convinced that this is great for our customers and the product. Kinshofer will make sure that this new product range will be integrated as soon as possible.

It is Kinshofer’s intention to roll out this new product line globally under its well-known KINSHOFER brand and sell and support it by its own subsidiaries or regional partner distributors.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

Fashionably Late Both parts of the Kato Imer brand name will be familiar to UK plant-watchers. But the company’s arrival on the mini excavator and skid steer scene is every bit as unexpected as it is belated. Diggers and Dozers is suitably surprised. When you arrive late in a saturated market like the UK mini excavator sector, there are several things you need to do to ensure that you have a fighting chance against some longestablished and well-respected competitors. First of all, you had better bring your “A-Game”. UK customers have three decades of experience in buying, owning and operating mini excavators, so they know what they like and they like what they know.

Secondly, your product and the aftersales service behind it needs to be at least comparable to the very best equipment already on offer. Thirdly – and, in some ways, most importantly – you had better have a unique selling point; something that sets your product or the service that supports it aside from the crowd. And, based purely on our first glance, it appears that Kato Imer has ticked all these boxes and possibly a few more as it prepared to arrive late to the UK mini excavator party. Conscious Decision Before we get into what is on offer from Kato Imer UK, it is worth taking a trip down memory lane to look at the two longestablished and formerly independent brands that make up that Kato Imer name. Those of us of a certain vintage will likely associate the Kato name with the manufacture of mobile cranes; and the Imer name with concrete and compaction equipment, hoists and a whole heap of other equipment that occupies that strange hinterland between tool and plant hire. For a time, the name Imer was preceded by the letters IHI which, as the industry’s old-stagers will recall, was another major construction equipment manufacturer. But when the powers that be behind the IHI name decided to abandon the construction equipment sector in pursuit of pastures new, an alliance was formed between Kato and Imer. Perhaps the first sign that the company is serious about its entrance into the UK market is the fact that it was delayed until now. “With the IHI name going away and the Kato name coming in, we were concerned that we would create some confusion in the market and among customers,” explains Kato Imer UK sales director Sam Edwards. “So we made a conscious decision to stay away until the time was right.”

64

DIGGERS & DOZERS

precious little to choose between a Kato Imer machine and that of a more established rival. Poke your nose under the hood of one of the mini excavators, for example, and you will find a Yanmar diesel engine that will be familiar to any plant fitter worthy of carrying a spanner. Household Name The company set out its stall in fairly spectacular style during a series of “dig days” recently, gathering something like 50 different machines and allowing owners, operators (and a few stray journalists) to experience the kit first-hand. That kit includes mini excavators from 900 kg right up to 8.5 tonnes; skid steers from 1,000 to 3,500 kg; and a tracked dumper range that starts at a 400 kg electric-powered model right up to an 11 tonne model. And it is these tacked dumpers that Edwards believes could be a first foot in the door for his fledgling company. “The tracked dumpers look to be the best way into the UK hire market. It is a sector that is, perhaps, less competitive than the mini excavator market,” Edwards continues. “There are fewer competitors. And we have some really outstanding machines to offer.”

Another indicator of the company’s UK intentions and aspirations is the order in which it is establishing itself. Long before it has established a sales and dealer network, the company has set in place a large holding of machines together with an extensive stock of spare parts. “We recognise that we are up against some very big and very good competitors, so it is important that we get the basics right first,” Edwards continues. “That is why our focus, initially at least, has been on supporting the product.”

That being said, the mini excavator market – despite all its potential pitfalls and competition – holds the promise of sufficient volume sales to turn the head of even the most patient sales director. But while Sam Edwards is unquestionably ambitious, he is also a realist. “The mini excavator market will be challenging. We have some very good competitors and customers tend to be loyal to specific brands so we will not win market share overnight,” he concludes. “My intention is to make Kato Imer a household name, though possibly not in volume terms initially,” he concludes. “But when customers look for mini excavators in the future, I would like them to consider Kato Imer in the same way they consider Kubota and Takeuchi.”

Proven Approach Perhaps the largest feather in an already impressive cap, however, is the fact that the company is willing to back the entire range with an unequivocal 5-year warranty across the board. And that is a warranty based on serial number, not customer. So anyone buying a Kato Imer machine within its first five years will be receiving a machine that is still covered under that warranty. Such an approach is not new, of course. It is a system that has been operated to huge success by Japanese and – more recently – Korean car manufacturers seeking market share. But it’s a system that works two-fold. Not only does the customer have the peace of mind of a five year warranty, that warranty speaks to the manufacturer’s confidence in its equipment. Also mirroring the approach of Japanese and Korean car manufacturers is the fact that the Kato Imer machines come “fully-loaded” with all the bells and whistles UK customers have come to expect. Furthermore, in terms of components, there is
