YOUR GUIDE TO FASHION & SHOPPING ON CAPE COD | WINTER 2014

Letter from the Editor

I

t is becoming clearer to me that The Current Quarterly is a mission driven magazine. Yes, it is a publication meant to entertain, but the other intention of the magazine is to dispute the perception that locally owned stores don’t have the vast selection of products and styles that chain stores and department stores do. Showing this and encouraging consumers to shop small is vitally important because locally owned businesses contribute more to the Cape Cod community than any other type of business – monetarily, socially and culturally. Among the pictures of the beautiful girls, trendy clothes, unique products, and the profiles of stylish locals there is the message that our local stores have the products that consumers want. In these pages you will find hundreds of products, and numerous advertisers that prove this to be so. Should you ever doubt you can find something you seek on Cape Cod, I urge you to pull out of the strip mall parking lot, close out the online shopping window and send me an email at amanda@lovelocalmedia.com. I will tell you where you can find whatever you are looking for, on this side of the bridge. Shop local. It matters.

Runway Rundown by Emma Childs Illustrations by Amy Szep Ever hear a fashion buzz word and wonder what the heck the stylists are talking about? Here is your guide to the trends of the season.

Winter Colors

Aluminum

Royal Blue

Print: Landscape

This season try to step out of your polka-dotted and striped comfort zone, and instead try a landscape print. This picturesque trend makes any piece you wear look like a work of art, and is craftily blending the worlds of art and fashion together to create statement pieces. Mountain range adorned jackets create a wonderful ambience, almost as if you are in front of the actual view yourself. For more of a subtle edge, pick up any piece that incorporates an ombre sunset or sunrise for a mellow, yet fashion forward feel.

Material: Suede

6

Golden Yellow

Cool Mint

Camel

Dark Cocoa

Everyone loves a comeback story, and this winter suede is back in full force. This smooth and delicate material is coming back in fresh and modern ways and taking the world by storm (again!). Suede is easy to be either dressed up or dressed down, while still having that feminine touch. A crisp button down paired with a suede pencil skirt is the epitome of sophistication and professionalism. But if you are feeling a little more casual, throw on some jeans and grab a simple suede bomber jacket for that delicate yet easy-going touch.

Detail: Fringe

The past few seasons, the fashion world’s reinvention of vintage trends have been sources of inspiration for many and for this winter, fringe is coming back swinging. Fringe has the perfect balance of drama and femininity. When used in small doses, it can be that perfect splash of spontaneity that an outfit needs. Fringe comes in all shapes and sizes; so choose the right amount for you and incorporate it into your own flirty style. Whether sporting a fringed hemline on midi-skirt or fringed back detailing on a moto jacket, fringe will add that perfect fun flare to any ensemble.

Waistline: Cropped (Knit)

This past year, cropped pieces have been all the rage and they certainly carried over for this upcoming chillier season. Cropped knits have been spotted on the runway and in street style all over, looking chic and cozy. And as always, the amount of the crop is all up to you! When a button down is worn underneath the knitwear, the combo creates a professional and put together look with the ease of two pieces. Grab an oversized cropped sweater and wear with high-waisted bottoms of any kind for an easy vintage vibe while still looking put-together.

Current Beauty Tips, tricks, advice and adages for having fun with your hair and makeup

by Emma Childs

T

he holidays are a time for togetherness, gratitude, and of course, glitter. If there is any time to break out some shimmer shadow and metallic liner, it’s the holiday season! • While the cat eye is certainly nothing new, try adding a line of metallic above the cat eye that follows the trend of liner for some metallic splash. • The temperature has been known to drop to and well below freezing here on the Cape so flushed rosy cheeks are not hard to come by. But to add some of your own personal touch, try some blush with glimmer tones to make you glow with holiday cheer. • For any holiday parties that need some of your own shine, try a simple updo with the addition

10

of a shimmering headband. Whether styled across your forehead or tucked away into the style for some peek-a-boo shine, this extra touch will add festivity to any look. • Of course, the amount of shimmer usage is all up to you, as much or as little as you please, and if you are not one to gravitate towards the glimmer, we encourage you to try something new this holiday season. Never underestimate the power of just a little shimmer. Season’s greetings!

Clothing Cures for the Winter Blues

A

by Shayna Mahoney

s the winter season settles in, we all must fight the urge to only wear sweatpants, big sweaters and hibernate. Local woman and transformational coach Shayna Mahoney shares her thoughts on how the clothes in your closet can affect your mood, and how to make that affect a positive one. Just a few years ago, I was in my early 20's, going to college, working full-time and taking Prozac, an antidepressant I was prescribed at 12 years old. I was eating a lot of junk food on the go and gaining weight consistently. My wardrobe consisted of black, baggy clothes, especially during the winter months. I didn't realize it back then, but I was trying to hide my weight gain as well as my bad mood and low energy. Needless to say, I wasn't living a happy, energized and confident life that I saw other women experiencing. I dreamed of the day that I could wake up, love my body and dress in a way that made me feel energized and confident. Once I started to attend nutrition school and began my journey of becoming healthier and happier within, my outside appearance began to change. I worked with a stylist who helped me find clothes that fit my body type and my confidence started to improve. We went through all of my clothes and shoes. We ended up donating more than half of my closet! I became more organized and I felt free from clutter both physically and mentally. Just

as Feng Shui is used to help create calmness and happiness within the home, the act of clearing out my closet had a similar impact. I was energized and had found clarity. It is known that clutter creates stagnant energy, as well as physical, mental and emotional chaos. Clearing clutters helps us to feel less overwhelmed and anxious. As clutter is cleared, we are able to create space, breathe, think clearly, and be more creative. After cleaning out my closet, I now had to find new clothes as it was looking pretty empty. I decided to purchase items I really loved that fit my body type. Due to my short stature and minimal curves, I am considered a rectangle body type. In order to compliment my body type, I should wear clothing that highlights my waist and create curves. Circle body types are thicker around the middle with slender legs, thin shoulders and a trim booty. To compliment a circle body type, wear clothing that adds structure and highlights your slim legs and shoulders. Triangle body types have thicker hips with shapely

13

legs and a trim waist. To compliment a triangle body type, wear clothing in layers to create balance, such as a cardigan with a camisole.

• Dress it up: Even while working at home or running errands, wear a cute shirt, scarf, shoes or jewelry to boost your confidence and mood.

Hourglass body types are proportionally curved with large breasts, a small waist and curvy hips. To compliment an hourglass body type, wear solid colors and avoid layering.

• Do you want to feel more calm, productive or optimistic? Try adding blues, greens and yellows into your wardrobe, especially during the long winter months.

Once I started to find clothes that fit my style and shape, I then decided to expand my color palate as the black was boring and a bit depressing. Color Psychology has studied how colors affect our moods, feelings and emotions. For example, the color blue can actually cause the body to produce calming chemicals and to be more productive. Green is relaxing since it represents nature and is easiest on our eyes. Yellow is optimistic and improves concentration. Red can create confrontation. If you want to feel energized, confident, optimistic and fashionable during the long winter months on Cape Cod, try these simple tips: • Clear the clutter: Take a few hours to set aside clothes you no longer love, and create donate and recycle bins. Once you begin to clear this clutter, you have room for clothes you love and you will boost your energy and mood. Additionally, the act of donating will help you feel purposeful and happier! • Have you ever had an outfit that you just loved to wear that fit perfectly? An outfit that made you feel confident, energized, sexy and powerful? Try to add more of that style and fit into your closet. • Pay attention to your body type and which type of clothes will enhance it.

Style Profile by Amanda Converse

Molly Parmenter

how I present myself (or my present mood) to the world. It can be a form of rebellion or conformity. CQ: How do you think the fashion industry and music industry relate to each other? MP: Fashion and music are both creative outlets, and they appeal to artistic people in the same way. I think it’s the connection between our senses and our emotions that make it meaningful. CQ: How do you dress differently for the stage and for everyday life?

M

olly Parmenter is Cape Cod’s own Tori Amos – talented singer-songwriter with exotic beauty and a unique voice. She has graced the stage at the Island Merchant in Hyannis for years singing her own songs and covers of other female singer-songwriters that touch the listener at their core. Molly also has her own sense of style, and we caught up with her to find out how fashion plays a role in her life and in her music. CQ: What role does fashion play in your life? MP: For me, fashion is about self-expression. It’s

56

MP: When I am performing, comfort is just as important as in everyday life. I wear pretty much the same thing; I just put a little more effort into the whole 'look'. It's still me, just slightly amplified. CQ: How would you describe Cape Cod style?

MP: I think Cape Cod style is dictated by the elements here; the ocean being the most dominant. It's a little bit carefree, a little bit functional, a little bit modern, and a little bit classic. CQ: Where do you like to shop locally for clothing? MP: I've lived on the Cape all my life, and ever since I've been old enough to shop, I've been going to thrift stores. Goodwill and Salvation Army are my favorites.
