WINTER 2016
The Guide to Fashion & Shopping on Cape Cod C O M P L I M E N TA R Y
1
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
W
elcome to our Winter Issue! This is possibly our favorite issue of the year, because we
get to feature over 150 products from local shops across Cape Cod in our annual Gift Guide! It is a lot of work, but if it means we get to show all of you the great stuff our Cape Cod shops have available for all of your gift giving needs then it is totally worth it. The gift giving season, which we say is an entire season that spans from November through February is truly the best and most important time to shop local. When you buy a gift for a loved one, a hostess gift, stocking stuffers, or a trinket for a Yankee swap from a store owned by our friends and neighbors your gift has more meaning than if it is purchased at a nationally owned business - it is also a gift to the community, because it is supporting the local business community that is an important element for Cape Cod’s strength and sustainability. Shop local this holiday season,

RUNWAY RUNDOWN Ever hear a fashion buzz word and wonder what the heck the stylists are talking about? Here is your guide to the trends of the season.
Winter Colors ROSE
PEACH BLOOM
Print: Sparse Florals
It may be wintertime but that doesn’t mean that you can’t wear florals – not necessarily bright, bold flowers, but more distributed and uniform blooms that make a statement by being understated. This print can be found on flowy and structured dresses, professional and dressy skir ts, and skinny and widelegged pants.
SAMBA Detail: Contrast Piping
BOSSA NOVA
INCA GOLD
Monochromatic clothing has been having a moment for…well, longer than a moment. But now there’s a little added detail that is switching things up a bit. Edging an entire piece in a contrasting color adds a little flair to an otherwise singular outfit.

Hemline: Raw Edge
To some an unfinished hemline might seem like a sewing mistake, but for many in the fashion world today a raw edge hemline – whether it has a frayed look on a dress or a simply cut pair of jeans -makes a statement that a carefree look can still be high fashion.
Neckline: Exaggerated Bow
One surefire way to spice up a blouse of a dress is to include an exaggerated bow at the neckline. It is currently showing up in career wear, as well as elegant gowns. Pussy bows are not a new trend but one that makes its reappearance every few years due to its classy nature and universal appeal.

STYLE PROFILE CQ: When did you become interested in makeup artistry? JM: I always dabbled in makeup artistry since I felt the need to look my best on stage but it didn't get serious until three years ago February. I joined a natural based cosmetic and skin care company called Younique Products. This company promoted personal development both financially and spiritually. I loved the mission statement of high quality products meeting personal development and decided it was time to get serious about attaching this to what I already did. I love networking online and watching YouTube tutorials. You can learn how to do anything with determination, practice and a good attitude. Younique fit perfectly for me. I was a busy musician, mom and wife, but it made me want to continue to grow as a woman without stressing me out.
Joanna Meager
J
oanna Meager is a veritable Cape Cod rock star. Whether she is belting out a catchy pop song or an emotional original, you can’t help but be mesmerized by her voice and the positive energy she exudes. She is a deeply creative person who has been playing live music for ten years, developing incredible friendships and other passions along the way, including makeup artistry and fostering a more size inclusive fashion community. 22
CQ: What role do fashion and style play in your life? JM: Fashion has always been hard for me‌ answering this question was hard too. So much so I reached out to my social media audience for help. It seems like the biggest role it plays is empowering people to be beautiful at any size! I have always been an overweight person. I grew up wishing I could fit into the clothing my friends wore and as I grew I realized that was just never going to be "me!" It went from comfortable and free flowing tops with bell bottom jeans to office slacks, pencil skirts
and comfy tank tops under cozy sweaters. I hid a lot throughout life instead of embracing who I was. Fast forward to now and you will see fast I have a huge love for leggings and skirts. I never could find boots that would go above my ankles or leggings thick enough to smooth out my bumps, but this another thing that has come along with my plus size acceptance! I love who I am even if shopping is a little harder for me than others! Empire clinched tops that show my smaller waistline also helps me feel more proportioned. I hope that people can learn from this confidence, and lack of caring as a fashion statement in itself. CQ: How do you think the fashion industry and music industry relate to each other? JM: Fashion and music relate so perfectly - one almost cannot be without the other. The art of music can be felt in words and the melody you hear but many people relate better to music when they can see the artist behind the words. For me, music is about energy and positivity! Music has always been a way I could impress someone without needing to be perfect; spreading messages of love, and being confident in your storytelling. Naturally what we wear can enhance that feeling. I have been uncomfortable in clothing on stage, and it's awful. So I dress as me all the time, knowing I will be sweating, moving and shaking. My clothing becomes a part of the memories I make. I love dark colors like cranberry, plum, black, and golds while always popping colors of pink and blue where ever I can! I love patterns and abstract tops that make
you stare. I have green eyes and I feel like little pops of color really bring attention to other places beside my curvy figure. Once again making plus size feel sexy from the inside first. I love showing off my shoulders or my neck line. Anything to turn some heads and make my appearance as elegant – it’s empowering. Seeing a plus size musician as comfortable in her clothing as the size 6 bombshell at the bar, needs to be much more common than not.
CQ: How do you dress (makeup and clothing) differently for the stage and for everyday life? JM: At home I am a mom boss! I work from home and I love it. I make my own hours and do lots of online training for my team. I love doing tutorials and helping women learn how to apply makeup they purchase. At home I am comfortable yet professional. I don't really have a fashion “off ” switch. Even my bathrobe is pinky fuzzy and ready to make an appearance! I like that no matter what 23
I wear, I am confident in who I am, which makes CQ: Where do you like to shop locally for clothing? anything I wear feel amazing. JM: Honestly, I have a hard time shopping on Cape Cod. I'm a confident plus size lady who likes to CQ: How would you describe Cape Cod style? look professional while also being comfortable. JM: Cape Cod Style is unique. We are very trendy Sometimes I will find fun things at locally run out here and I don't think we, as a culture, even know businesses like Wicked Thrift and Consigning it. Between colors and texture, we can rock any type Women. They have various sizes and randomly I of style with ease. Between summer sun dressing will find a top or skirt I can't say no to - one person’s unneeded shirt is another person’s new stage look! I hope this kind of availability evolves more in our locally owned establishments. Plus size shopping takes time, dedication, and commitment. But it is also going to take more local support to keep the plus size money here on Cape Cod.
with colorful shades to cranberry ponchos and tall boot socks. More than anything, I think Cape Cod dresses fashionably for the seasons. Layers and accessories really make fashion fun here. A perfect sand-between-the-toes vibe meets stilettos and leggings. I love the local jewelry vibe and different accessories we can find that are homemade and so stylish. We have the most talented artisans and for amazing prices. 24
