ART AND CULTURE OF BELÉM BELÉM (ICOARACI), BRAZIL
Explore the art and culture of Belém during a half-day tour of this historic city that rubber fortunes helped build. No single building shows this off more than the Teatro da Paz opera house — a fabulously ornate rococo gem from the 19th century located in Belem’s main square. Continuing on the theme of gems, you’ll call on the São José Liberto Jewel Museum, where gold, diamonds, emeralds, tourmalines and other precious gems are on display and the history of mining in Amazonia is explored. At the Museum of Sacred Art, housed in a 17th-century baroque church and considered Brazil’s most important museum, you’ll be dazzled by treasures of a different sort — some 300 pieces of the country’s most impressive religious art. An escorted walk from here brings you to the 17th-century Presépio Fort, now home to a museum focused on the history of Belem’s indigenous residents before, during and after the Portuguese arrived in 1616. Exhibits include everything from ancient funerary urns to coins brought in by settlers. Out on the waterfront patio, original 19th-century cannons still seem poised for a battle that never comes.

Enjoy an adventurous off-road journey to a remote cove where breeding penguins are the main beach goers. Your journey begins with a drive through Stanley and past battlefields from the 1982 Falkland Conflict. Reaching Bluff Cove farm, you’ll transfer to a convoy of 4x4 Land Rovers for the exhilarating 30-minute trip out to Bluff Cove Lagoon. Waiting for you here are 1,000 pairs of Gentoo penguins, a growing colony of King penguins with their chicks, and Magellanic penguins who swim over to visit from another island. Walking along the white, sandy beach, watching the penguins dart through the water and amble along the shore, you’ll see a wide range of sea birds and maybe even spot dolphins in the surf or sea lions lolling at the water’s edge. You can even watch the wildlife parade from a cosy beach-side café where they serve up warm beverages and home-baked treats. Bluff Cove Museum is also on hand, where you can find out more about the farm and the lagoon menagerie as well as watch live demonstrations of spinning and felting done with local wool. All told, you’ll have about an hour to revel in this extraordinary wild environment before the return to Stanley.
