Editor’s Desk I have never felt more privileged to be a part of the HIES community than I did February 2nd, 2015. The seniors gathered together in the commons shocked and confused and when the grief sank in, we each had over 100 shoulders to lean on. Our class suffered a terrible, irreplaceable loss, but rather than crumbling apart, this tragedy has led us to grow closer together and lean on one another more than ever before. I can honestly say that I have never been more proud of the senior class than I was that day.

Now, even though the initial grief has passed, the class of 2015 must still face graduation and our last moments of high school without an integral member of our family – Madie Wilbanks was and will always be the most truly genuine person and compassionate listener to grace my life. For that, I am forever thankful. She saw beauty and art where most wouldn’t think to look. Anyone who knew her would say she appreciated the small things and lived more intensely than many do in a lifetime. Although she is gone, Madie’s memory lives on in each of us, the sky her new canvas. Rest in peace, sweet girl. You will be so missed and forever in the hearts of the class of 2015.

Commemorating such a powerful, beautiful life is by far the most difficult task I’ve ever been faced with in my journalism career. The C&G celebrated her beautiful life as best we could by including a thesis written by Madie herself during her time at the Oxbow School. I hope it impacted you as much as it did me.

While I look forward to what lies ahead, my years at the C&G will always stay with me. I can’t wait for what is in store for this magazine, especially since I am leaving it in such skilled, capable hands. Special thanks to our amazing underclassmen staff - always be proud what you do here, because what you do is amazing.

Octane: Grant Park Location: Grant Park Menu: Teas, espressos, macchiatos, drip coffees, pour overs Specialties: Cortados and long blacks Price Range: $ Situated in a gentrified part of Grant Park, Octane is a premier trendy coffee shop in Atlanta. It is neighbored by The Little Tart Bakeshop and had a solid menu, but I’d recommend the drip coffee or a soy milk latte. If you are looking for (dare I say) the best coffee in Atlanta, head on down to Grant Park for great company, good vibes and even better coffee.

Land of A Thousand Hills Location: Roswell, GA Menu: Iced coffees, cappuccinos, lattes, Counter Culture Coffee, pastries Specialties: the “Reverend” Price Range: $ This coffee shop, right off South Atlanta Street, is sandwiched in a gorgeous part of town. Its location near the Chattahoochee National Park and the river gives it a crunchy coffeehouse vibe. Its menu is made up of lattes, cappuccinos and iced coffees. Perhaps the best thing on the menu was “The Reverend.” Espresso infused with raw sugar, it reminded me a lot of a Spanish cortado, but sweeter and it was fantastic. Also, the “Land of a Thousand Hills” comes from the Rwandans nickname for their country.

Even though they are all serving the same thing - amazing coffee - no two coffee shops are alike, making your coffee drinking experience something way better than your typical venti mocha frappuchino from Starbucks. This modern coffee shop introduced me to one of my favorite drinks - the “Espresso Shaker.” However, if you’re not into a double shot mixed with chocolate syrup and milk, the rest of its incredible menu will not disappoint. They serve Counter Culture Coffee, an up and coming roaster in Atlanta.

Their baristas are very knowledgeable and that adds to the experience. Its great view of the Atlanta skyline is sure to make for a great coffee-drinking time!

4. Joe’s East Atlanta Location: East Atlanta Village Menu: Pour overs, espressos, lattes, drip coffees, pastries Specialties: “Jittery Joe” Price Range: $

Sandwiched in-between groovy eateries and tattoo shops, Joe’s had quite the funky vibe.

With bright orange walls, exposed brick and a mural-covered ceiling, it had a refreshingly relaxed atmosphere. Their specialty “Jittery Joe” is highly recommended, consisting of a simple tall cup of ‘joe’ with two shots of espresso. Joe’s is a coffee shop full of personality and if you’re looking for a great place to study or get a good drink, look no further.

ho knew that an old, run down hotel site could be rehabilitated into one of Atlanta’s finest food truck locations.

As the emerging concept of food trucks is becoming more popular, the Atlanta Food Truck Park and Market has joined in to create the very first permanent food truck location in Atlanta.

With its lively atmosphere and delicious food, this park is a popular destination for owners and their trucks.

Whether looking for quick grub on the drive in or out of Atlanta, or a full day filled with a variety of assorted food, good music and simple company, the Atlanta Food Truck Park and Market has it all.

Howard HSU, co-owner of the Sweet Auburn Barbecue food truck, had a vision to create a space where food trucks could assemble to marvel in their shared love of the restaurant business on wheels. After the first week of opening in 2012, the park had to temporarily close due to permit issues.

Due to the fact this is a new industry with new rules, the Atlanta Police Department and food truck owners eventually solved the problem, allowing the park to thrive.

The Atlanta Food Truck Park and Market has progressed into a place not only about the food being served, but also about the ones serving it, the people you encounter, the time spent together, and the atmosphere

of experiencing something new and exciting.

Located on the northeast quadrant of I-75 and Howell Mill Road, this park is fairly easy to navigate with the exception of the limited parking.

Attempting to bring a little bit of French cuisine into the Atlanta food truck scene, the Crepe Suzette food truck stands out from the crowd.

Each crepe is composed of its own special blend, whether it’s sweet, salty or spicy. The owner’s distinct French accent shows these traditional French crepes must be very close to his heart.

“La Nature,” a menu item original, is a deliciously warm crepe swimming in melted butter and sugar. Although simple, this crepe is bursting with flavor and guaranteed to leave customers full and happy.

Originally from Binghamton, New York, this truck has made a new home here in Atlanta, and from the looks of it, enjoys everything the city has to offer. A crowd favorite, “The Loaded Tots” are a must have. This signature dish is a bed of golden brown tater tots topped with fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, buffalo chicken and ranch dressing. This calorie-laden dish leaves a spicy, appetizing taste in your mouth that won’t be forgotten. Feel free to ask the staff on their recommended dishes - they will not disappoint.

A unique truck sure to delight customer taste buds, the Patty Wagon prides itself on reimagining the fast food burger. The most popular menu item, “Bacon the Law,” is a bacon cheeseburger topped with the Patty Wagon signature sauce. A large, flavor filled patty with melted cheese and crisp bacon, this mouthwatering many adore meal. For those less risky burger connoisseurs, there is a run of the mill hamburger, “The Usual Suspect.” Full of character, this truck is enjoyed by burger lovers and food truck addicts alike.

Records and their sleeves can be seen as an art, as they are often times hung on walls not only in homes, but also in stores. Like other forms of digital music, the artwork displayed on the album covers offer musicians another form of art in order to better express their vision for the album.

An example of artwork extending the lyrical experience of an album is Pink Floyd’s 1973 album, “Dark Side of the Moon.” One of the most iconic and recognizable album covers of all time, album cover designer, Storm Thorgerson, was quoted in the 2011 Rolling Stone article as saying, “I think the triangle, which is a symbol of thought and ambition, was very much a subject of Roger’s lyrics.”

Dr. Paul Kreinheder discusses his overall thoughts as to why he thinks the vinyl record is making a comeback: “The L.P., despite it’s flaws, produces a very natural sound, and even though it doesn’t have the best technical measurements, many still prefer it.”

Kreinheder then compares vinyls to compact discs (CDs), saying, “The rationale seems to be this: although various forms of digital media such as compact discs and dsd downloads, while they offer some type of pure sound, it’s still thought of as being an artificial sound to a certain degree.” u

With the variety of jobs out there, students can get a number of experiences. That being said, sometimes the experience needed to land a job makes it impossible for students.

Whether to take a job or an internship is a question some students struggle over. On one hand an internship offers expertise and a more tailored experience, while a job offers character building and cash.

Senior Sarah Joe, who will be working as a lifeguard this summer, offers a piece of advice to potential workforce members.

“I worked at a Renaissance festival. I had friends that were working at the Renaissance festival and they told me ‘Oh you can do this if you want to and we can all carpool and hang out.’ The weirdest memory was scrubbing the turkey leg pans at the end of the day, because what would happen is they would roast the turkey legs in these like, giant cookie sheets, or you would cook a sheet cake in, and so as the fat melted off the turkey legs just sat at the bottom of that pan and then that pan would sit all daylong. It would solidify and be what I called ‘Turkey Jell-O’ and that was the weirdest thing. [I learned] how to speak with a British accent, how to tie a corset. Oh, I also learned, if you’ve been to the Renaissance festival a really popular booth is hair braiding so you could get your hair braided ‘medieval style’ and so having my own hair braided a couple of times then watching them braid other people’s hair, I learned some cool braiding techniques.

“I worked at a roller rink. I started off just working the rental counter and keeping the floor safe, but I upgraded and spent my last two years as the highly coveted DJ. It was always quite an experience if you had to work the New Years Eve lock-in that lock-in went from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and one year I worked the shift from 7 p.m. till 1 a.m. then another year I worked the 1am til 7 a.m. shift and it was one of those things where it was such a terrible thing to do that everyone kind of enjoyed the suffering together. Another favorite memory, this isn’t specific but sometimes birthday parties wouldn’t eat all their pizza and we would eat it, and the pizza at the roller rink was really good. I mean it was like Kroger brand pizza but that oven they used was PREMO, so that was always a nice treat, if you got some leftover pizza or birthday cake. [I learned] how to roller skate backward and I know early 2000s late 90s music really, really well, like I know the words to songs by Outkast, Vanessa Carlton, Michelle Branch, Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, I got that genre.”

THE HIDDEN REALITY Social media tends to burden the blame for reinforcing negative thoughts and behaviors. But is there more to the story?

olling out of bed on an August morning, an eager 14-year-old girl is about to start her first day of high

school.

She looks in the mirror and thinks to herself, “I wish my hair was straight … all of my other friends have straight hair ….it just isn’t fair.” She sighs as she begins the routine of straightening her hair - a routine she feels is necessary in order to fit in.

Insecurities are not partial to one race, gender or age group; everyone encounters self-doubt, frequently playing a role in how people act or present themselves. When surveyed, 77 percent of HIES upper school students admitted to feeling ashamed about a wide range of insecurities.

One survey respondent said, “Everyone doesn’t have braces, but I’m one of the few who [does], so I want to close my mouth when I smile.”

Not only can students’ insecurities affect their confidence, but they can also affect their social lives, as the fear of being judged can even keep them from leaving the house.

Nearly half of the respondents, 49 percent, admitted that their insecurities have kept them from going out in public.

One respondent noted, “I don’t want people to see me without makeup on that’s why I’m super, super nervous for ‘No Makeup Monday.’ It makes me want to call in sick or not come to school.”

Although an individual may be aware of their own insecurities, many do not understand the root cause of these often debilitating emotions. According to the selfreported responses from the fall survey, the 11

To do so, surround yourself with positive people. This ambiance of positivity will spread, disintegrating the major cause of insecurities.

It is also important to enforce optimism toward others. A small compliment or act of kindness can make a significant difference in someone’s life. Therefore, paying it forward takes a step toward deteriorating the insecurities that devour society.

It’s late at night and you’ve been “studying” for hours, but nothing is soaking in. Is it the material....or is it you?

Most students think they study effectively.

In fact, 60 percent of HIES students self report* their study habits are effective, but in reality, many are wasting precious time on study habits that simply do not work. These insufficient study habits can be tough to break, as people have a tendency to settle into routine. The environment, time of day, and methods all impact study time productivity.

If looking to spend valuable time wisely, it is important to understand how to develop new, more effective habits.

In the digitalized world we live in today, information is readily available on any subject with just the click of a button. Although this can be a useful means to get our academic questions answered instantaneously, a new problem presents itself: distraction.

One of the best places to hit the books is the library. According to sophomore Alicia Chacko, the library is a great place to study because “There’s always a comfy chair and a quiet area where I can tune out everything else and focus on my work.” The quiet and relaxing atmosphere, along with limited distractions provides for excellent studying.

Although this may seem obvious, the same cannot be said about another common study location.

Despite popular belief, a bedroom may not be the best place to focus. The key to a perfect study session is finding a place that is comfortable, but not as comfortable as a bedroom. As if the temptation of taking a nap is not enough, bedrooms are typically full of interesting items and distractions.

Even if the student finds the perfect studying place and time, study habits can still impede mastery of the material.

Emilee Hagerman Making a Splash

S

ophomore Emilee Hagerman surprised everyone when she transitioned to an entirely new sport after a torn meniscus and strenuous gymnastics career. Although the injury was not serious enough to end her career, it did significantly affect her decision to move on from the sport.

At the age of two, Hagerman began gymnastics and pursued her love for the sport for the next 14 years. In addition to being difficult and dangerous, gymnastics is also time consuming and kept Hagerman very busy. Daily after school, she would head straight to the gym for four hours, and wouldn’t get home until nine o’clock.

The practice surely paid off as Hagerman competed in all four events as a successful Level 10 gymnast, the highest level you can reach based on skills and performance. She competed at meets all

over the country, winning countless awards.

Hagerman hopes she can continue diving in college and says this remains her overall goal moving forward. There is no doubt that many colleges will want to recruit her after such an outstanding performance in her first season. u

I

n a community full of ephemeral high school relationships, one couple stands in stark contrast to the short-lived affairs of students: The Greens.

Seen daily in the cafeteria, Officer Wesley Green and nurse Tammy Green sit and laugh together and socialize with other faculty.

Both with crucial roles in our school combine to make the most potent and known duo at HIES. Each year as changes occur around Holy Innocents’ and students come and go, this power couple stays the same, both dynamic symbols of HIES ideals of service and community.

“We are ONE school - educators, staff, students and the school community.”

In 1999 when nurse Tammy Green signed her first contract at Holy Innocents’, she knew more about the school than the average new employee. This knowledge came from her husband, Officer Green, who had been working at HIES as a traffic director and on the sidelines at sporting events.

The next 16 years have been all HIES for the Green family. Throughout this time, both husband and wife have continued to work on campus and they have even sent two sons through HIES for a combined 18 years of education.

At HIES, nurse Green holds the title of primary school nurse. This responsibility is one that she carries with pride in a community that she greatly appreciates.

On a day-to-day basis, Green is responsible for evaluating sick students from the lower and middle schools. There, she provides 17

Band-Aids and relief to wounds and Ibuprofen for minor pains like headaches.

However, if students need extraneous care, she calls the legal guardians, informing them of their child’s illness, and suggesting further action.

When the previous nurse at HIES, Martha Lyons, asked her to consider the job, nurse Green jumped at the opportunity to work with her husband. After taking the job, she quickly acclimated to the environment and fell in love with the ONE school approach.

Nurse Green has a passion for helping others and uses this passion to help a community that she loves. She says she loves HIES so much because “We are ONE school - educators, staff, students and the school community.”

As a person that sees many in our community at their worst, this is a huge compliment to our school. She has no plans to leave HIES anytime soon, and believes that as a medical professional, this is a place where she can truly “make a difference.”

Despite many job opportunities in the past, she has always remained true to HIES for this reason and perhaps also because of her husband.

After a long and successful marriage along with two sons, who also remain in close contact with their friends from HIES, Green continues to navigate the quickly changing campus with a smile.

Green calls her husband a “trustful, family man” and believes that she is “so blessed” to have him as a spouse.

Together they have logged over 30 years at HIES and created a lasting impact on the community. Imagining a HIES campus and community without their care would be a difficult task. u

W

alking onto the campus of HIES, there is an air of safety. We have Officer Wesley Green to thank

for that.

Although he is widely recognized around the HIES school community, many students do not truly know the man behind the uniform.

Green, “born and raised here in Georgia,” attended Joe E. Brown High School in the West End before joining the military at age 17. After three years of service, he decided to attend law school.

Once he graduated from the Woodrow Wilson College of Law in Atlanta, he became a police officer.

“I was in the military for a while and I served people there, so when I got out, I knew I wanted to do something in that field,” adding, “I like being around people and just talking with people.” Green said.

On a daily basis, Green is in charge of coordinating the traffic control and making sure that HIES is a consistently safe learning environment for the students and the teachers. He protects the community by being “visible in multiple areas” and by creating lasting relationships with the student body.

Although Green is a retired Fulton County police officer, he is still a part of a program that requires him to keep up the state qualifications. He doesn’t “walk around writing tickets,” but he has “the same authority as the officer on the street,” minus the car.

A long time staff member, Green “was introduced to Holy Innocents’ back before we had a graduating class. It started from just Friday nights and Saturday nights sitting in the parking lot making sure people wouldn’t come in and trash the lot.”

Once HIES accommodated a junior and senior class grade, the traffic demand began to grow. HIES felt the need for a security presence on campus, and Green was the man for the job.

Green loves waking up and going to work everyday because he looks forward to “seeing your smiling faces! It really does feel like a family atmosphere.”

Along with love for the student body, Green also loves to spend time with his wife, nurse Tammy Green.

“It’s great working with your wife” Green said.

“More than anything else, we have a great deal of trust between us.”

Officer and nurse Green will enjoy their 30th anniversary this coming July.

“I don’t think we have any secrets for a successful marriage. We have a great friendship with each other and more than anything else, we have a great deal of trust between us” said Green.

Unlike many married couples, The Green’s are able to enjoy lunch together and talk about their day. Green explained that it is an advantage to catch up at lunch because sometimes he gets “caught up into [his] sports program at home and disappear in the basement,” so it’s nice to have that time to catch back up.

Thanks to Green, HIES is a better and safer community. Students can walk around freely without feeling threatened. There is no need to fear because Officer Green is always here. u 18

Should domestic non-profit organizations focus primarily on the United States of America?

Service is a significant part of our lives here at HIES. Each student is required to complete 60 hours of service and many go beyond this. There are clubs, events and even schoolwide days dedicated to helping others. These efforts are diverse, ranging from building homes for Atlanta Habitat to organizing books to send to schools and children in Africa. So, should we, as Atlantans and citizens of the United States, focus on bettering our own country before we extend a helping hand to those abroad?

Granted, I take a non-zero sum, global view of humanity; “their gain” is not “our loss,” and the call to “do justice” did not come with a qualifier, “only in your own hometown.”

To argue otherwise seems a bit selfish and reflects, I think, an insular view of the world – a weak nationalism. Do I think we should be looking for opportunities to serve in our own communities? Absolutely. But imagine if the founders of Amnesty International had been told that they could only work on behalf of citizens of the United Kingdom, or the physicians of Doctors Without Borders on behalf of their French compatriots.

If President Carter had been told in his retirement that he could only advance the causes of democracy, public health and access to information in the United States, or the founders of Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund the conservation, research and restoration of the environment in Alaska and New York but nowhere else. We would be much the poorer. u

ver the years, “be successful” has become synonymous with “get rich.” We’re told to get good grades, go to a prestigious university, get a job and “be successful” so that we can provide for our families, maintain or improve our standard of living, afford that beautiful Porsche that just passed us on the highway, or move into that monstrous house we saw on Powers Ferry.

Although there’s nothing wrong with setting your sights on financial wealth, there are endless ways to achieve success and “accomplish an aim or purpose,” even if it’s a path that won’t land you on a Forbes list.

Due to the coveted 30327 location and the culture at the school, this pressure is especially prevalent for HIES students. It is up to each individual student to decide the way in which they will go out into the world and “be successful.”

Junior Haven Boaz chooses to define success in terms of acquiring financial wealth, and she hopes to do that for herself by settling international political disputes for the United Nations.

Although Boaz has always had a knack for “law and politics,” she aspires to work internationally and on such a large scale because, frankly, the paycheck is hefty.

Besides “being able to take care of [her] self and [her] family,” Boaz defines success in this field as “making a difference.” Especially in such a high position with an influential organization, “the decisions you make and whatever you convince someone else to do” have incredible impacts for many people all over the world.

Although her particular interests can lead her down a number of different career paths, Boaz was deliberate in setting her sights on such a high office because “growing up, that’s what [she] learned. You try to make enough money to be supportive, live by higher standards.”

THE ATLANTA BELTLINE AN INTRODUCTION TO ONE OF ATLANTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S NEW POINTS OF PRIDE CLAIRE SIMMEL, staff writer

T

his upcoming month kicks off the time of freedom for the students at HIES. Atlanta offers many unique experiences and landmarks outside of the “Buckhead bubble” that dare to be explored with summer just around the corner. Although one can travel all over the world this summer in order to seek out adventure, Atlanta now provides a more local alternative.

The Beltline connects communities across the city in an innovative and modern way. Proposed by Georgia Tech student Ryan Gravel in 1999, this project has developed into one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in the nation. Still under construction, the Beltline surrounds the city on 22 miles of historic railway.

This project is expected to be finished around 2030, but that does not mean that city-dwellers have to wait to enjoy.

There are many open paths and routes in

use today. When the paths are completely finished, the Beltline will conjoin 45 Atlanta neighborhoods into one connected community. Of these 45 neighborhoods, some include Grant Park, Inman Park, Midtown, Virginia Highlands, Morningside, Buckhead, and Westside.

An eco-friendly transportation route for walkers, joggers, bikers and rollerbladers, the Beltline offers countless opportunities for Atlantans to interact and have a handson experience with their city. The Beltline provides over 1,300 acres of parks, 5,600 units of affordable housing, and 33 miles of trails. Designed with community interaction in mind, it holds year-round community events and alternative ways to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle such as running groups, bootcamps, and trail yoga.

Our city’s culture is colorful and unique and the Beltline helps to preserve and represent the rich history that dates back to before the Civil War, which played a huge role in railway transportation. Today, these historic railways are the basis of the Beltline’s paths.

One way the Beltline showcases an original facet of Atlanta is through art. Since 2010, emerging artists are selected to temporarily display their work. From intricate sculptures to remarkable murals and engaging live performances, the paths boast a wide variety of public art and expression.

As the Beltline includes the largest outdoor temporary public art exhibition in the South, local artists must compete to submit their proposals to the Media Director of the Beltline. Artists who apply are expected to represent Atlanta through the aesthetics of the environment, urban life, culture, and history. The Beltline isn’t just a mode of transportation; it is a destination in itself. u

ACADEMICS Mark Kale

S

ince the fifth grade, senior Mark Kale consistently impresses the HIES community with his knowledge and ability to perform in and outside the classroom. Supported by his parents, peers, and teachers, Kale is in the top 5% of the senior class based on GPA, is a member of every Honor Society present at HIES and has received numerous class awards. Crediting the majority of his success to his parents, he has achieved his goal by “[working] hard with lots of studying.”

While Kale excels in an array of course materials, his favorite is math, specifically AP Statistics and AP Calculus B/C. For Kale, math is an art form. Looking forward, Kale cannot wait to experience “a world where [he is on] his own.” In addition, he is excited “about focusing on a specific major and applying it to the real world when [he becomes] employed.”

Kale’s academic enthusiasm has, and will continue to radiant among his community, as he takes his next step towards the future while attending Georgia Tech in the fall.

Claire Kelsey

S

enior scholar Claire Kelsey consistently impresses her teachers and peers with her knowledge and hard work in the classroom. Growing up, Kelsey was taught to “have a one hundred percent work ethic.” With that motto as her inner monologue, she strives to be the best she can be.

Kelsey’s academic success has not gone unnoticed by the HIES community. She has been awarded several class awards for her outstanding performance in the classroom, the Georgia Certificate of Merit for being in the top 5% of her class, and the Star Student Award, given to the student with the highest SAT score.

“I was taught growing up to have a one hundred percent work ethic.”

In addition, she is a member of five honor societies, where she engages in academic and community related topics outside of school.

Furthermore, she is able to practice her leadership skills as she fulfills a role in three of the five honor societies.

Kelsey attributes her scholastic success to her study habits.

She suggests to, “focus on specific topics and don’t get frustrated with yourself if you don’t understand. Use your resources.”

Furthermore, Kelsey likes to listen to specific genres of music while studying and prefers to write out all of her materials.

The consistent work ethic she applies to her academic routine will serve her well in the upcoming years, as she plans on majoring in biology pre-med at Notre Dame. As if that was not enough to occupy her academic work load, she is also interested in nutritional science, sports medicine and orthopedics.

Kevin Tang

S

ince pre-kindergarten, Kevin Tang has continued to amaze the HIES community with his intellect and passion for learning.

Consistently at the top of the class, he tackles the scholastic challenges of AP and honors classes with ease.

Growing up, Tang has “always liked math.” Continuing with a chuckle, “I mean, I am pretty good at it.” For this reason, he has also grown a passion for Computer Science over the past two years.

Outside of the classroom, Tang excels in Model UN and on the stage. Tang advocates that every student should choose a curriculum of interest, “Don’t choose classes that you think are going to bore you just for colleges.” Doing so, will allow the students to be more engaged in the class discussions and lectures, which will prevent students from procrastinating their work. Tang also suggests that HIES students take a course load that they “can handle.” While he supports academic challenges, he believes that students should overwhelm themselves to that point that is “beyond [their] ability.”

For now, Tang plans to major in Computer Science at Georgia Tech.

Kylie Thurber

K

ylie Thurber has an undeniable academic curiosity, love for learning, and bubbly personality.

Throughout high school, she has excelled in a number of different areas, but her impressive academic career definitely stands out. She recalls that some of her favorite classes have included Chemistry and Anatomy and Physiology.

Although she has a clear affinity for the sciences, Spanish 5 Honors is the favorite of her senior schedule . Thurber credits her great academic success to her friends and family, who motivate her “to do [her] best in and out of school.” This encouragement has definitely been effective , “My friends and as Thurber has earned a spot on the Headmaster’s List all family motivate four years of high school me to do my best and has been the recipient of numerous class awards and is in and out of a member of numerous honor school​.” societies.

For Thurber, it is not all hard work and no play. Looking back on some of her favorite memories of her 12 years at HIES, she fondly remembers a chalk fight in Mrs. Garner’s AP Chemistry class junior year and all the various dress up days for Homecoming and Winterfest.

She not only exceeds in the classroom, but she is also captain of the Varsity Lacrosse team, a member of Send-A-Smile Club, and is on the Horizon’s board.

Thurber will attend the University of Georgia next fall under the Zell Miller Scholarship, where she will study biomedical engineering.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Joe Chapman

W

hen Global Citizen Joe Chapman sees a problem in the world, he is determined to make a change. “I’ve grown up and been so blessed myself and there is so much poverty around the world and so many problems that need fixing.”

His true passion for service sparked when he travelled abroad for global. The summer after his sophomore year, Chapman did homestays in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France and Austria, expanding his horizon from the Atlanta bubble. The following year, he spent two weeks in Ethiopia coaching a Christian sports camp with an emphasis on “I’ve grown up and bridging the gap between Christianity and sports. been so blessed During a tight game that resulted in a win for his team, Chapman recalls his players, “coming up and hugging me. That is probably one of the most transformative moments [for me].”

Khorkie Tyus

T

his year, Khorkie Tyus was honored with the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award given by the Girl Scout Organization. To achieve this award, she created the non-profit organization, Warm Love, which helps chemotherapy patients while also educating the general public on what patients have to endure.

Warm Love assembles gift bags with a variety of items, including masks, hand sanitizer, Sudoku, and magazines for patients to keep them clean and entertained.

“When they get the bag, they know that someone cares for them and someone loves them.”

“Back in 2012, my mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer,” says Tyus, describing the inspiration behind Warm Love. She soon learned what chemotherapy patients need that most. “It was a learning process the entire time I was going through it,”

During her mom’s treatments, Tyus noticed that not all patients had someone with them which inspired the idea of Warm Love. “When they get the bag, they know that someone cares for them and someone loves them.” said Tyus. Regarding the inspiration behind the name, “the chemo makes the patient more susceptible to the temperatures, so I put a blanket in the bag, too.”

Tyus has plans to further her cause when she attends the College of Wooster in Ohio next fall. “I want to make a Warm Love house where we can put together bags, and take them to the infusion centers in and around Ohio.”

Caroline Ward

C

aroline Ward began involvement with community service for the social aspects. This all changed when Ward’s family decided to volunteer in Nicaragua over Christmas break during her 7th grade year. The people of this beautiful, impoverished country left a “lasting impression” on her and her family, leading them to return every following year. Ward even considers the Nicaraguans she has grown closest with to be her second family, saying, “I like to do the work, but I’m mostly there for the people.”

The mission trips Ward takes part in primarily focus on “I like to do the building houses for the least fortunate local residents and work, but I’m organizing activities with the goal of bringing the community mostly there for together. For instance, three years the people.” ago, Ward’s group organized the first community-wide gathering that now takes place on the first day of every year, uniting many while creating communal relationships.

Ward keeps in close contact with the people she stayed with on her first trip to Nicaragua, a family of pineapple farmers. This farm is an inspiration to Ward as it employs the community and provides nourishment to the region. She has grown especially close with the three children of the farmers, Ada, Brandon, and Nestor Nehemias Jr., making her annual reunion with Nicaragua all the more special.

Ward plans to attend University of Georgia in the fall and believes that community service will “still be a part of [her] life.”

Will Jones

W

hen Will Jones started scouting at age 10 he didn’t realize how much work it would take to achieve his goal of becoming an eagle scout.

He spent his boyhood and early teen years on camping trips and learning skills that are helpful and applicable to everyday life.

The countless hours helped him become the man he is today and he is thankful to the scouts for this opportunity.

After an excellent eagle scout project, Jones finally earned his Eagle Scout title in August of his senior year. His project took place in the woods near his home where he and his troop “I am proud to be built a twenty foot by four foot bridge over a creek. Jones carries the honor with pride and additionally is “proud to be a part of such a great group of scouts”. He truly believes that he became a better person because of the people around him.

Working together towards a mutual goal helped the group “grow close” and he made some of his closest friends scouting.

Over the years his favorite honors he earned was the backpacking badge. Backpacking has become a passion that he plans to continue to pursue throughout life. The part he most values of the experience was the “time he got to spend with his father”. Jones is a proud Eagle Scout an example of excellence at HIES. He will hold onto the values and lessons learned through his experience with the Scouts for the rest of his life.

ATHLETICS Rod Davis

W

restling and Rod Davis are often synonymous.

Beginning in the third grade, Davis’s dad, Stacy Davis, HIES middle school wrestling coach, suggested he wrestle because “it would make me a better football player because at the time I was really into football.”

His love for the sport only grew from there. Wrestling has influenced Davis’s athletic life, but it has also made a significant impact on his personal life off the mat.

As team captain, Davis believes that “it is hard to lead a wrestling team considering it is an individual sport. Looking back on his time as a high school wrestler, his most impressive achievements include titles such as the 2014 GHSA State Champ, the 2014 Prep Slam Champ, and a member of Team Georgia Cadet National Team that placed 4th at Nationals.

Davis has earned an athletic scholarship to North Carolina State University this fall.

Sarah Joe

S

enior Sarah Joe recently brought her 8 year volleyball career to a close. Four years of club volleyball, four years of HIES varsity, and two state championships later, Joe reflects, “Playing volleyball taught me much more than just how to pass a perfect 3 ball or jump float serve, it taught me countless life lessons and showed me just how far I can push myself.”

Not only was Joe team captain for the last two seasons, but she also led the team in points as a libero and outside hitter.

Her versility does not stop off the court.

Academically at the top of her class, Joe balances the heavy workload and daily practice schedule by being, “Really good at time management. During volleyball season, there wasn’t time for Netflix or games on [her] phone, the only things [she] had time to do were to practice, eat dinner, shower, do homework, and sleep. Everything else had to wait.”

“Volleyball taught me countless life lessons and showed me just how far I can push myself.”

Playing all four years under the tutelage of Coach Taylor Noland, Joe states, “She not only pushed me harder than any other coach I’ve had, but she also genuinely cared about me as a person, not just as a player. She always wanted to know what was going on in our lives and became much more than a coach to us.”

Playing college volleyball was an ambition that Joe deeply considered, but reconsidered due to the stressful and draining process. Although she may miss her “team commraderie”, there is no doubt she will continue to carve a new and successful path at Texas Christian University.

Sam Asbury

F

or senior Sam Asbury, playing golf has been an integral part of his life since a very young age. Although he started playing the sport with his brother on the driving range for fun, over the years his mindset about the game shifted as he went on to practice for hours on end and compete in tournaments throughout his teens.

However, golf was not always the most important sport in Asbury’s life. When he entered high school, Asbury was convinced that basketball was the sport he would pursue in college.

He had a change of heart, as he explains, “Something changed for me my junior year and I decided that golf was my favorite thing to do and that I wanted to pursue a college golf scholarship.”

Since then, Asbury spends at least four hours a day on the golf course. That is the case, unless he is busy with basketball season.

“Golf has taught me that it is very important to be honest and tell the truth.”

After making this decision, he started playing more seriously and participated in numerous local and national tournaments.

Asbury says that the hardest part about golf is caving to self-doubt when you are in a slump. Just last summer, in what he describes as his greatest achievement in his golf career, Asbury came out of a slump with two back-to-back tournament wins.

However, for Asbury, golf isn’t just about the trophies he earns.

The sport has also greatly impacted the rest of his life, “Golf has taught me that it is very important to be honest and tell the truth.”

Asbury will attend Georgia State University on a golf scholarship.

Rachel Morton

S

enior Rachel Morton has always been a standout athlete at HIES. A multisport athelete, Morton has played basketball since seventh grade, soccer since freshmen year, and cross country for the first time this year. Her commitment has been driven by the fans. She explains that whenever she “[goes] in the game and [she does] something kind of good,” everyone cheers for her, which “makes [her] smile.”

Morton has put the majority of her focus into her favorite sport, basketball. As the captain and lone senior of the state runner up Lady Bears, Morton has been instrumental “My favorite part of to the success of the nationally ranked squad basketball is when I and a major presence in go in the game and the post position. Throughout Morton’s high school career she has looked up to Missy Franklin, an Olympic swimmer for the United States.

Morton explains, “She has had to make difficult decisions that were best for her like when she chose to continue to finish high school.”

Although Morton is an outstanding athlete, she has made the decision to not continue in college. Morton will take on the next four years at the University of Alabama, “Roll Tide!”

FINE ARTS Alex Robitaille

F

rom painting on canvases at the age of two, to joining a crafts club in elementary school, art has played a significant role in Alex Robitaille’s life for as long as he can remember. While some escape reality through books or a sport, Robitaille uses art to, “forget about everything around me.”

Fortunately for him, HIES offers an array of visual art classes, allowing Robitaille to channel his passions. Beginning with Advanced Art in eighth grade, Robitaille has taken 8 different visual arts courses at HIES. This exposure has allowed him to explore an array of mediums and art forms, enabling him to further pursue his passion.

Outside of the classroom, Robitaille’s favorite art form is fashion drawings. Inspired by his own fervor for dressing well, Robitaille loves to “draw beautiful dresses and outfits that you can’t find anywhere else.”

“(Art) is a form of self expression. You get to experience the world through a different set of eyes.”

For Robitaille, art “is a form of self expression. You get to experience the world through a different set of eyes.” He explains that some are critical thinkers, viewing the world like a grid where every object has its place. However, in Robitaille’s eyes, he “look[s] at something and [sees] it for more than it is.” For example, in people, he is observant of facial features, allowing him to “experience” the human race, rather than simply notice it.

Next year, Robitaille will continue his passion at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. There, he will major in Illustration and minor in Fashion Design, putting him one step further to pursuing his dreams.

Anna Kampfe

S

ince her seventh grade year, Anna Kampfe has been a tremendous asset to the HIES fine arts program. Whether it’s leading in plays and musicals, or creating her own artwork for a High Museum exhibit, Kampfe’s artistry has made a lasting impact on the HIES community.

Each play, talent show act, and individual piece of artwork helps to shape the person she is today.

She uses her talent to discover “what it is she wants to do with her life as well as teaching herself how to work with other people.”

Outside of school, Kampfe works at the High Museum to further her career potential.

Either joining theatre group, theatre troops, or maybe even starting or joining an Acapella group.”

Although the curtains may be closing on her high school career, she will continue her acting, singing, and drawing at The New School in New York City.

Caperton Putt

F

or senior Caperton Putt, bright stage lights and comedic musicals are what he enjoys most. Since sophomore year, Putt has participated in three fall musical productions, playing a leading role in two of them. For his final production at HIES, he played the character of Christopher Belling in Curtains. This was his favorite role because he “got to do an accent” and the majority of his lines were “jokes and shots fired at the rest of the cast.”

Anyone who saw his performance in Curtains knows that Putt is both talented and humorous, keeping the audience on their toes, and laughing until they cry. He admits that he struggled with stage fright at first, but now claims “I couldn’t be more comfortable on stage.” Putt hopes to continue acting as he heads to DePaul University in Chicago in the fall.

Laura Coe

S

ince the seventh grade, Laura Coe has excelled in all things performing arts. While her first love was music, friends of Coe motivated her to take her talents one step forward and pursue acting.

“The best part about both is the freedom for self-expression and creativity. Every part and every song I perform has a little piece of me with it.” Coe said.

This feeling of independence has allowed Coe to truly delve into her passion, forgetting the outside world around her.

“If you don’t get into a play or get a solo you want, just keep practicing and audition at the next chance.”

Furthermore, Coe’s stage presence has made a lasting change on her confidence for they “made [her] more confident in [her]self and [her] abilities. [She is] more willing to jump into new things.”

This growth has given Coe the ability to never give up, as she explains, “if you don’t get into a play or get a solo you want, just keep practicing and audition at the next chance.” Her persistence has allowed her to grow into the performer she is today.

Coe’s talent has also kindled her relationship with her closest friends, which has given her a support system to thrive in the spotlight.

Looking towards the future, Coe would love to pursue acting and singing in college if time permits.

HOBBIES Ivano Milo

I

vano Milo is the “jack of all traits” when it comes to music.

In the first grade, Milo began taking guitar lessons. However, his true love for melodies did not transpire until age ten when he had the opportunity to play his favorite song “Holiday” by Greenday.

Since then, Milo’s passion has only progressed.

Now, music directly influences his emotions and state of being. Milo plays 9 instruments ranging from the Greek bouzouki to the drums. He admits, “there’s always this subconscious desire to have an instrument in my hand, no matter what I’m doing.”

To put his passion into action, Milo participates in HIES’s all male acappella group, the Beartones. He also plays in four different bands as well as a solo project.

While he does get enjoy his instruments, his favorite feeling is when he hears the crowd roar while he performs. He explains, “The first time I heard an audience sing along to a song I had written was one of the most magical moments of my life.”

Milo aspires to financially support himself with his music.

Luckily for his fans, Milo hopes to continue “playing and writing music until [he is] no longer able to.” He plans to attend the University of Georgia in the fall, where he will expand his musical knowledge and talent.

Nichole Murdock

N

ichole Murdock moved to Atlanta from Ireland in the summer before 6th grade, immediately finding a new home with the HIES community.

It didn’t take her long to assimilate into Southern culture, but one thing she kept with her was Irish dancing.

Now, as a senior, Murdock has been dancing for 13 years, practices nearly every day, and participates in regular competitions.

In her own words, “it completely consumes” her life, but that’s just how she likes it. All of her hard work over the years has definitely paid off, as Murdock sites “rank[ing] 13th regionally and qualify[ing] for nationals” as the highlight of her career in dance so far.

“(Irish Dancing) is a unique sport that’s part of my heritage.”

Her extensive time on the dance floor has taught her that “patience is really important.” Due to the nature and difficulty of Irish dancing, it’s “not something you’re naturally gifted at,” so Murdock had to completely dedicate herself to the sport to get to where she is today. Even after all these years, her passion has not dwindled, as she still feels like she’s missing out when she doesn’t go to class.

This “unique sport” has allowed Murdock to stay connected to her heritage even though she lives so far away from home and she can’t imagine life without it. Although she’s already an assistant instructor, Murdock “would like to be a dance teacher” as an adult in addition to a regular day job, and hopes “to continue during college with self-discipline” when she heads to Auburn University in the fall.

Joe Stockert

A

t HIES, there are endless extracurriculars to get involved with, especially sports. Few take the courageous step outside of high school athletics to try something completely new and unorthodox. However, senior Joseph Stockert took this risk and joined the Saint Andrew Rowing club. After hearing about it from a friend, he decided to give it a try and became a member of the Saint Andrew Rowing Club, “a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting youth rowing in the Metro Atlanta Area.”

A time consuming task, Stocker practices “6 days a week, weekdays from 4:30 to 7:00 and Saturdays from 7:00 to 9:30 in the morning” at the Chattahoochee River in Roswell.

“(Rowing) has taught me teamwork and dedication to one particular thing.”

Rowing is a sport of skill, strength, and teamwork with spring and fall being the competitive seasons, and summer and winter focused on conditioning. It is also a big time commitment, as Stockert rows year round for the club and competes in region competitions.

All of the time and hard work that Stockert has poured into this sport has been highly rewarding as “it has taught [him] teamwork and dedication to one particular thing.” Stockert explains, “It is a great sport and a good way to meet lots of people. However, it is a big commitment.” The rigorous practices and long hours have “taught [him] how to work with a team”.

After graduating from HIES as an Alpha Omega, Stockert will be attending Georgia Tech and will hang up the oars to focus on his studies in Biology.

Megan Cahillane

R

oaming the halls of HIES, senior Megan Cahillane is always found with knitting needles and yarn, creating intricate scarves, hats and blankets. While some view knitting as a hobby for the elderly, Cahillane proves this notion wrong explaining, “it is a huge stress reliever. I was super stressed about college first semester and I would always be knitting because it relieved my anxiety.”

In addition, Cahillane is frequently found knitting in class in order to cope with her Attention Deficit Disorder because it “keeps [her] hands busy,” which allows her to better focus on the daily course material.

This has been a hobby of hers since fourth grade, since she learned to knit from her mom during time spent on the trains of Europe. Cahillane did not rediscover her love for the needle and yarn until she decided to start a Knitting Club at HIES with AP Statistics teacher, Meredith Many. Beginning with only 3 members, this club has expanded to a weekly lunch meeting, where 10-15 members convene to practice and learn new skills.

Cahillane’s club has also developed into a philanthropic effort.

For the future, she and Many plan for the club to knit hats for needy children, demonstrating that simple hobbies can make a tangible impact on the community.

Cahillane’s knitting will continue, even in Chicago as she attends Northwestern University in the fall in order to keep herself busy.

While potentially keeping others warm with her knit hats, Cahillane has found a way to help her focus and feel productive.

his past summer, I began my travels to Chosica, Peru alone – no group, no guide and no leaders. I had finally convinced my family that I was ready for something more than another traditional mission trip. While I knew the risks associated with this trip, my involvement in a three-year global citizenship program had prepared me for this experience – making me globally aware and committed to serving justice.

I told the nurse that I would like to speak to a doctor immediately, and I refused to leave until I could. After the nurse persistently declined, I picked Victor up and stormed out of the hospital. Victor laughed the entire bus ride home.

And just like that – we were best friends.

I began to do everything for the boy with just one limb. I helped him dress, prepared his food and I even became “the chosen one.” Each month, Victor would choose a volunteer (usually male) to help him use the bathroom. It was a huge honor.

In the mornings, I would hear the booming noise of Victor’s prosthetic leg bouncing down the stairs and into the kitchen where I was serving breakfast. His grin and noarmed hug motivated me to cherish every second of my experience.

My last day in Peru was full of emotion.

Saying goodbye to the kids was heart breaking, but leaving Victor was the most difficult.

Before leaving, I took one last look at Victor and promised him I would return next summer. I left my new friends behind, but what I took with me was momentous: an understanding of cultural acceptance, a knowledge of both true suffering and true happiness, and a best friend whose presence I will always carry with me.

Whenever I feel as though I never made a real impact on the children’s lives, I remember the noise of Victor’s leg hustling down the stairs, and I am reminded that although charity is only temporary, a best friend is forever. u 42

hat do you see when you envision a person struggling with mental illness? Do you see a crazed lunatic bound to a hospital bed? Or do you see another friendly face in the school hallways masking the internal struggle with depression behind a convincing smile?

rom quiet and shy, to outgoing and overconfident, in four years I changed immensely. During high school I underwent transformations in my socialness, physical appearance, and academic drive. While many of these alterations could be controlled, many more couldn’t, and perhaps that’s the beauty of high school.

Unlike many at HIES who have been at the school since daycare, I attended Westminster until 10th grade. At Westminster, I felt static, as perhaps many alpha omega type students feel at HIES. After ten years in the same mundane environment, I found myself unhappy and unable to revise my identity, despite my best efforts.

After extensive consideration, my parents and I decided that a change in schools could potentially result in a change in the way I felt. Following a lengthy transfer process and a shadow day given by the one and only Ben Rousseau, I made the tough choice to leave behind my friends and start anew.

As my classmates began to question me about my decision, I began to do the same. Long after submitting the paperwork and shaking hands with Mr. Durst, doubt lingered in my mind.

I thought of the people I had known my entire life and all those that suddenly seemed to care that I would not attend their school the next year. Additionally, I considered the worst-case scenarios that could occur at HIES. The possibility of failure agitated me and forced me to question if the risk would be worth the reward. With less than a month left in school, I had all but given up the idea until a conversation with my basketball coach altered the way I saw the situation and my future.

“Once you decide, you’ve got to know to never look back,” he told me.

The brief advice, that to him probably seemed inconsequential, affected my life and my future in an immeasurable way. Those words “never look back” resonated in a way that no other words had in the past. Those words caused me to make a decision that shaped the direction of

my life. Those words helped me change and I will forever be thankful that I listened.

The next fall when I started at HIES I fully invested myself in the school and the community and I absolutely did not look back. In the process, I cut ties with my past and wholly opened up to a new future. At a school where I knew almost no one, I had the opportunity to reinvent who I was and, more importantly, had the chance to decide who I wanted to be.

The stagnant feeling of the past had gone thanks to my new classmates that received me as if they had known me all their lives.

The smooth transition allowed me to better myself and become significantly happier; however, I often wonder what could have been if I had not taken the advice from my coach.

I wonder if I would still be the static and shy boy that felt he could not become the person that he wanted to be. I am grateful for the opportunities that Holy Innocents’ has provided me and furthermore am content with how I have changed in my short but significant time here.

If I could give any advice to my freshman self, it would be first and foremost: trust yourself. Having faith in myself and in my decision-making has proved to be one of my most important assets over the years.

Confidence goes unfathomably far in everyday life.

In addition to trusting yourself, the next most important bit of advice is find strong mentors and trust in them. Had I not taken the advice from my coach, chances are I would be the stagnant person I used to be and would have never achieved my full potential.

But most importantly the piece of advice that I would give to my freshman self and all people is never look back. I still haven’t to this day and I don’t regret it. u

hen I think of Madie Wilbanks’ legacy, the words of Abraham Lincoln come to mind: “And in the end it is not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years.”

Madie packed more life into her 18 years than most people manage to fit into a life lived into old age. She truly lived every moment like it was her last with the perfect balance of eccentricity and grace. She found joy in the simple things in life and saw a beautiful world that she was not afraid to jump into and be a part of. She never took herself too seriously and could find humor in any situation without fail.

Mature enough to see past all the superficiality with which most teenagers are caught up, Madie always recognized the real, important things in life. She was friendly to everyone, but never felt the need to be fake friends with anyone, and in result had a beautifully eclectic collection of real friendships. Madie’s friendship was an honor, and a blessing unlike any other. She brought inspiration, laughter, art, beauty, and light to those whose lives she touched.

So, get ready to enter the wonderful technicolor world of Madison Taylor Wilbanks as you join her in exploring the million-dollar question: Bible or Barstool?

One of the most amazing gifts she left us is a glimpse of what the world looked like through her eyes, all thanks to her incredible artwork, photography and writing. A true artist can translate and convey their thoughts, feelings and ideas through their work, and this is exactly what Madie did every time she put paintbrush to canvas, eye to camera or pen to paper.

Madie had the rare ability to see beauty in things and people that others couldn’t, and the world is a little less colorful without her in it.

When she decided to spend the second semester of junior year at the Oxbow School in California, it was clear that she would thrive there.

She made art out of everything she touched, including our lives. She used to create art out of anything she could get her hands on. This spoke volumes about the kind of person she was. eople are quick to justify their personal choices or habits by explaining their past. Abusive father has led to the ultimate destruction of their marriage. Absent mother has forced them to look for comfort in the arms of many lovers. An impoverished youth has led them to bury themselves in their career, eliminating their chance to search for a soul mate.

Growing up affluent has led to their continued need to gamble away their horrid family fortune.

While the circumstances and the behaviors vary, one thing does not - a need for a relief from reality.

Reality does not discriminate. No socio-economic tier, ethnicity, social class, religion or political principles are safe from reality. So why is this? Why do we find ourselves staring through the bottom of an empty glass, feeling the too familiar burn in our mouth instead of going home to face the pain we try to wash away? Or in my experience - why do we mindlessly scroll down our twitter feed instead of picking up the newspaper and reading something that has the potential to affect lives?

After watching the constant decision to reach for numb relief instead of bitter medicine, I began to wonder, have we become a society that is so consumed in hiding in liberation, we neglect reality altogether?

Each man’s addiction, from the bottle to the Bible, is no longer simply something that destroys our relationships or leads to a counterproductive lifestyle, but it has transcended into global affairs. We see this every time we turn on the television or pick up a news article. Like most people, I refer back to my early youth - I begin to question why my childhood was filled with false extreme importance placed on reality TV shows like The Bachelor and my family dinners filled with conversations about what my step-mother read in gossip magazines like ‘OK!’ instead of what we read in actual books. I know this phenomenon occurs not only in my home, but also in homes around the country and around the world. I was drawn to ask, what deliverance

do we find in media and why? Is this relief found in reality TV and tabloids addictive? Is some form of addiction needed to keep us sane - even if it is reading about Chelsea Clinton’s latest alien abduction in the grocery line?

“Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heart of a heartless world, and the soul of the soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.”

Before I begin to suggest the opiates in our world today, I want to take a moment to really define what an opiate is. According to the Drug Administration of America, opiates “reduce the intensity of pain signals reaching the brain and affect those brain areas controlling emotion, which dominates the effect of painful stimulus.” When most people hear the word “opiate” they imagine junkies hiding in dark alleyways with belts strapped around their arms, shaking to plunge the syringe filled with a dark brown solution into their bulging vein. I am asking you to remember the actual definition of opiates for the remainder of this paper. I am asking you to forget the dark alleyway.

I grew up in a home that teaches religion as something necessary to life. My family has always instilled the values of Christianity, more specifically a home that instilled Christ as someone to include in my daily life, Jesus Christ as a man with all the answers. We should never question Jesus Christ. Christianity will save us all.

I’ve been taught that we shouldn’t worry, because Christ will always be there to save us - to give us strength, to save us from ourselves. My youth was filled with the rephrasing of the same statement: We need Christ in order to be alright. Sound familiar? If the word Christ were replaced with ‘drugs’ in most sentences, we would dismiss those statements with the justification they were coming out of the mouth of a drug addict. We would justify that drug addicts run to their drug of choice to hide from the world. Marx is simply saying the people have religion for the same reason people have drugs. He

is suggesting that there is more than one thing people turn to; religion is simply another thing people hide under.

Charles Kingsley, the canon of Church of England in 1798, takes this notion a step further, stating, “We have used the Bible as if it were a mere special constable’s handbook, an opium dose for keeping beast of burden patient while they were being overloaded, a mere book to keep the poor in order.” Kingsley’s assertion is proof of his belief that religion is just a tool to distract all the people from feeling the true sting of socio-economic-political unrest that gives rise to rebellion against injustice. He blatantly calls the Bible an “opium” dose, or something that gives a sense of relief and reduces the sense of pain, or more specifically reduces the possibility of reacting to pain. Religion is just another piece of the puzzle, a puzzle that weaves together people from every background possible with their method of disconnection from the discomfort of reality – vices, either prescribed or programmed, allow society to function slightly sedated. Is it wrong that people are religious? Is it wrong that they distract themselves from harsh realities?

“Populations such as youth, older adults and women may be at particular risk.” According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), these particular populations are at high risk of developing an addiction to opiates. However, if we think to the time in our lives where religion became part of us - most think of adolescence - in the height of our developing minds, we thirst for knowledge, and we are introduced to rigid structures of authority and laws to live by. Or, the mid-life crisis when the need for anything to numb the pain of a meaningless life consumes and a sudden turn to religion occurs. These are the times when we look for something to believe in. While this statistic applies to those who are susceptible to opiate abuse, we can clearly see that it also applies to those who are most susceptible to finding religion, or another escape.

Four point five billion people identify with one of the worlds’ four largest religions. In 2013 alone, 180 million people smoked marijuana, 2.4 million Americans abused prescription drugs and over 35 million people have used Prozac in the past 20 years. What do these large numbers mean? Do they mean bored housewives have become more bored? Or angst-fueled teenagers have become more experimental? No, we have an increased need to live in a sedated state - an increased demand to be relieved of reality. On the other hand, the production of these sedatives is on the rise. Why? The demand for these ‘saving graces’ has increased exponentially. So is it the increase in the industry’s quest to continue to sedate the masses leading to an escalading need among society to live in increasingly sedated 55

state? Or is it the other way around? Either way we are trapped in opium merry-go round - trapped between the industry throwing new sedatives into the masses of people searching for a relief from their reality instead of a change in it. But, in the end, is it our business to take the Prozac out of society’s Kool-Aid, or to bring the Church to the ground under the principal that it is a retreat from real world problems?

Maybe some people cannot relate to the addiction to religion or drugs; but everyone has a vice. Those who hide in the Bible may only harm themselves by closing their minds. Those who hide in tranquilizers may only harm their health and relationships. I’ve posed these questions to ask you to think on them. However, the next part of my discovery is something that all can relate to - an opiate that we all indulge in, an opiate we rarely accept the consequences of. Mass media - the new opium of the masses. “We have a built-in allergy to unpleasant or disturbing information. Our mass media reflects this... we [must] get off our fat surpluses and recognize that television is the main tool being used to distract, delude, amuse and insult us....” Edward Murrow, a broadcast journalist during WWII, warned.

Today when we turn on the TV, are we consenting to this supposed distraction, delusion and insult? The proof that television has truly become an addictive substance is undeniable and frightening.

Herbet Krugman conducted a series of experiments where groups from various socio-economic classes stopped watching TV. For the first experiment, families were asked to stop watching TV for one month. Easy, right? No. The poorest families all gave in after one week because of depression. Other families reported they suffered severe depression and felt like they “had lost a friend.” The next experiment was conducted with 182 individuals offered a paid incentive if they could last a single year without television. None lasted more than five months. What commentary does this offer about our society? Earlier, I defined how opiates worked - the blocking of pain sensors to our brain.

Keeping that in mind, let’s discuss how television affects us. When we watch TV, our higher brain region (neo-cortex) shuts down and the activity moves to the lower brain (cognitive function). Our brain cannot differentiate these images that we are being shown from reality, so the brain reacts like it is real-life.

Extended periods of this leads to atrophy in the higher brain regions. So yes, television quite literally rots your brain. The newest opiate of the masses affects more than just your brain; it is a threat to our social order.

These statistics should scare us. We should be scared of our children that are addicted to being doped up with television before they are even given a chance to experience the sting of reality. It is equipping an entire generation with an addiction to escape, an addiction to fall back on when they are feeling discomfort.

Previously, when generations are raised in situations of socio-political- economic inequality, they rise against the injustice and create change. We should fear for the generation that goes through the world happily sedated.

TV has become just another drug prescribed to refocus the masses on petty drama instead of inequality. Heavy TV viewers exhibit dependency symptoms more than necessary to arrive at substance abuse: 1) using as a sedative; 2) indiscriminate viewing; 3) feeling a loss of control while viewing; 4) feeling angry with oneself for watching too much; 5) inability to stop watching; or 6) feeling miserable when kept from watching. If we saw anyone exhibiting these symptoms for a drug, we would attribute this to their inability to control their own minds as a result of drug use. TV audiences have lost control of their minds as well. “Commercials, for example, are designed to implant moods in consumers to associate with the product when encountered in real life.” This means that our thoughts and desires are clouded as a result of our drug. So what is the comfort we find in this vice? Why do we know all of the detrimental effects on society and health that television, as a key part of the mass media, leads to, yet we continue to press the power button? Throughout history we have been rescued by our opiates.

One would think amongst the tragedy of the Great Depression people would buckle down and spend their money sparingly only on the necessities; however, Brevities’ success shows us otherwise. People needed to hide away in a time of Great Depression. Comics such as Superman, Flash Gordon and Dick Tracy were popular among children, for they offered a similar relief that so many searched for. The children of the depression had their superhero’s to believe in, and the adults their “Chain Sin Soars” articles. Addiction allows escape, an outlet in which we can feel free of the troubles that choke us in everyday life.

In Narcotics Anonymous (NA), you must first come to terms with what your drug of choice brings to your life in order to come to terms with the reality you have been running from. In other words, we must recognize the benefits of our vice. When we think of modern day tabloids we picture the grotesque images of star’s ribs, absurd love children and leaked rehab patient confessions; however, maybe we should think of them as society’s saving grace. When you look at the history of tabloids, you might begin to recognize tabloids as the saving grace the society continues to need. The term “tabloid” was trademarked in the 1880s as a word for little pill but by the mid 1930’s celebrity gossip was well on its way to the 3 billion dollar a year industry it has become today. Broadway Brevities was the first tabloid in America, launched in 1916. For the first few years it crept along slowly but amongst the chaos of the 1930’s

This paper is not meant to provide answers. Nor is it meant to prescribe life style changes. This paper is meant to advocate realization. It is meant to bring attention to all of our escapes from reality. Whether we choose a Bible or a barstool, we are making a choice to disconnect. We must be conscious of our vices, even if it is clothed as a virtue. All my life I have watched people label right and wrong. The Christian Church is right, but Islam is wrong. We pray to the right God, but they do not know God. Our good deeds get us into heaven; theirs do not out shine their disbelief in the Resurrection. Light beer all day is okay, but tequila means you’re an alcoholic. My vice is justified, but theirs is a result of their poor judgment. We can live our lives happily drugged by our opiates, rather if they come in a syringe or a scroll, we can allow them to keep us happily sedated. But then isn’t that giving them power?

How can we point a finger at those who chose to spend their nights surrounded by bright lights and dollar bills each night instead of returning home, while we drown our dull marriages in Prozac and bad reality TV series?

Despite the locations, we are equally hiding from the truth. We may be able to find relief in our opiates and with this relief we may justify our addictions or we may accept them. Some rot their brains using hard drugs others chose television. Who are we to label opiates as wrong? Who are we to judge other’s escapes? u

What’s your vice? Some search at the bottom of empty glasses for relief, others hide behind religion to avoid having to question their opinions, and still others develop a chemical dependency on substances that flow through a syringe—all seeking to silence the feeling of dissatisfaction that brews within.

I wish to explore and bring attention to a hypocrisy we foster in modern society—the hypocrisy that allows those who hide behind religious shields to discredit those who find relief in a bottle. Really both are hiding from something.

In seeking to understand the modern opiates of the people, I came to the conclusion that the media plays heavily on keeping society contently sedated. The celebrity tabloid industry, for instance, plays a key role in providing an outlet or Americans to escape the realities of everyday life. Tabloids offer ‘news’ stories about the Clinton’s latest alien abduction, and act as an antidote to the realistically grim papers that print all-too-true stories of deficit and defeat. In support of this theory, I also discovered that there are similarities, on a brain-chemistry level, between the dependencies people form on drugs and on television.

This artwork utilizes digital photography and collage. I designed, decorated, and detailed three dresses with real tabloids, broken glass, syringes, a recycled bible, and mirrors. Working with this variety of media, I mean to draw the viewer not only into the art piece, but also into a reflection on your own vices, whatever they may be.
