SCI MAKES ITS CASE by Sara Hershoff Hundreds of citizens rallied at the Simcoe County District School Board Special Meeting on Accommodation Review Area B Thursday, May 14 in an overwhelming show of support for small, community-based schools. Staff, students and community leaders were called to action after hearing of a

school board staff report recommending Stayner, Penetanguishene and Elmvale high schools be closed and all secondary-aged students in northern Simcoe County be educated at the existing Midland and Collingwood institutions as well as a new facility in Wasaga Beach. This report was in direct defiance of the Board’s Accommodation Review Committee, which had been set up to assess the situation and had unanimously rejected a three-school solution after a year of consideration. Arriving at the board office before the meeting were busloads of students from all three of the affected schools. Coming out swinging for Stayner Collegiate Institute and Clearview Township were Mayor Ken Ferguson, Councillor Shawn Davidson, teachers Jared Singleton and Holly Polasek and parent Lynn Black. The final score was 17-6 for Stayner, with SCI tries scored by Jeff Robbins, Theo Gordon and Kennedy. Conversions were scored by Chris Nuttley.
