At an all-candidates meeting hosted by the Stayner Chamber of Commerce Tuesday, a veteran asks candidates, would their parties stop the claw back on military pensions? climate action. Sommer said although it’s good to see young people engaged, “there is a certain amount of fear mongering.” C o n s e r v a t i v e c a n d i d a t e Te r r y Dowdall agreed saying, “I don’t think 'the sky is falling' is the right message for kids.” Another resident asked Dowdall how he could be trusted to focus on climate change when he didn’t even
attend the local 100 Debates on the Environment. He defended himself saying he had a prior commitment to attend the County of Simcoe Warden’s Gala, where $55,000 was raised for the United Way of Simcoe Muskoka. He said he has been out knocking on doors and he is hearing that the number one issue for people is lower taxes. (See “Debate” on page 5)
OFM investigating house fire explosion by Trina Berlo A house fire on Concession 3 South Nottawasaga, near Avening, is now under investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal. “It appeared there had been an explosion which resulted in rapid fire spread and as winds increased it definitely fanned the fire promoting more rapid fire growth,” said Clearview Township Fire Chief Roree Payment. “Crews worked very hard to bring the fire under control however due to wind conditions and the house’s location, being on a hill, unfortunately the house
was lost to fire.” He said the explosion came from within the home, and is the reason the OFM and the TSSA – Technical Standards and Safety Authority – were both called to investigate. When the initial fire call came in at 2:40 p.m., Payment said he was the first on scene and found a fully involved fire. He said there was one person home at the time and they had escaped without injury. He said the wind picked up shortly after firefighting efforts began. All stations responded to the call and

Climate concerns raised at Stayner Q&A by Trina Berlo The Stayner arena hall was packed Tuesday evening during an allcandidates meeting for Simcoe-Grey, hosted by the Stayner Chamber of Commerce. With the exception of opening and closing remarks from each of the five candidates on the panel, the format was a Q&A from the audience. People lined up to ask questions on a wide range of topics, with climate change being a major theme. Similar to the Oct. 3 Debate on the Environment in Collingwood, Liberal candidate Lorne Kenney, Green candidate Sherri Jackson and NDP candidate Ilona Matthews all agreed their parties would work to meet and exceed the Paris Accord’s carbon emission reduction targets. P e o p l e ’s P a r t y o f C a n a d a representative Richard Sommer reiterated his party’s position that climate change is not necessarily caused by human activity and therefore no action is required. Leader Maxime Bernier says he would withdraw from the Paris Accord. The Conservatives have committed to meeting the Paris Accord targets but would scrap the carbon tax. One resident asked candidates to respond to Greta Thunberg’s call for

because of the rural location, pumpers were called in from Mulmur and AdjalaTosorontio. Payment said because of the ongoing investigation, firefighters worked to control the fire while at the same time preserving as much of the scene as possible. Firefighters were on scene all weekend, finally clearing the scene and leaving it in the hands of OFM on Monday. Through the Mutual Aid program, Wasaga Beach firefighters covered the area while Clearview’s resources were being directed toward the fire.
