Election time is upon us

Mulmur Melancthon Fire Chief retires by Trina Berlo Turning 65 comes with big changes for Mulmur-Melancthon Fire Department outgoing Fire Chief Jim Clayton. After 30 years he is retiring from his role as chief, but is also retiring from his 20-year job at KTH and he and his wife have sold their house and are moving north. “It has been a real honour to serve the community,” he said. “I’ve always treated the fire department as a place for the men to go and have a good time but when the alarm came in, we all put on our professional hats and did the best job we could do. In the 30 years, we’ve always had a great crew of people and we’ve always got along with our neighbours in other departments. When they talk about fire departments being a big family, that’s exactly what it is.” Clayton started his career in the 1970s right out of college as an ambulance driver in Ajax-Pickering. He and his wife decided to move to the country and built a home in the Shelburne area. After commuting back down to work in Mississauga for a while, Clayton got a job at KTH in Shelburne, where chassis are built for Honda. (See “Mulmur” on page 3)

Council to share cost of new Station heating system by Trina Berlo Station on the Green will receive financial assistance from the Township of Clearview to replace the community centre’s heating and air conditioning system. Board chair Linda Coulter was before council on Sept. 9 to request the municipality pitch in half of the bill, quoted at $24,521. Coulter explained that rentals and fundraising covers the annual budget but there are other necessary expenses coming up, including a new coat of paint, an updated AV system, a keyless entry system, and the solar panels need updating. She reminded council that the Station, which opened in 2002, was

built thanks to community donations, with 495 individuals contributing more than $600,000, and that the facility is self sufficient for the most part. “Last year there were 460 separate uses of the hall and 321 separate uses so far this year. The hall is used for special events such as weddings, birthday parties, and celebrations of life, as well as weekly community events such as Tai Chi, Early ON, summer camps, the farmers' market and every Sunday, The Clearview Community Church,” said Coulter. “With so many people and groups from the Clearview/ Creemore area dependent on the use of this facility, we have no choice but to replace our heating and air conditioning

system. However, our yearly revenue just covers our yearly expenses with little to spare, and a new heating and air conditioning system would use up most of our bank account. That is why we are looking to you for support and help on this capital expense.” CAO Steve Sage said it was staff’s recommendation to approve the request because there is a memorandum of understanding in place for exactly this type of support. “For big purchases like this it is imperative that the municipality should be a partner,” said Sage. Council approved the expenditure, choosing to take the money from the tax stabilization reserve.

The annual Terry Fox Run is taking place in Creemore on Sunday, Sept. 15. The event welcomes runners, cyclists, rollerbladers, strollers, wheelchairs and dogs for a 5-kilometre route (or do it twice for the full 10k). Since Terry Fox ran his Marathon of Hope in 1980, Canadians have raised over $750 million for cancer research. This money is invested into projects with the greatest potential impact for patients. One such project is called Terry Fox PROFYLE, which focuses on hard to treat cancers for youth. This project, and others like it, use the principles of precision medicine and big data in a collaborative PanCanadian approach in an effort to give kids with hard-to-treat cancers another chance. The event takes place at Creemore’s Station on the Green between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Sign up at www. terryfox.ca/terryfoxrun/creemore.
